IB DP Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Searching for an IB DP home tutor in Abu Dhabi is usually a question about money as much as geography: what is a fair hourly rate, what does a villa visit add, and how many hours does a Diploma student actually need. This page prices all of it in dirhams with the sources named. IB Gram's own lessons run one-to-one over live video rather than at an Abu Dhabi address, and the comparison tables below explain exactly what that does to the bill.

  • Every AED figure attributed to the source that published it
  • Travel time priced as the cost it is, not hidden in a rate
  • Free first lesson, no payment details taken to book it

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Pricing a Diploma year properly, before anyone quotes you an hour

A Diploma student takes six subjects. That single fact is what makes Diploma tutoring a budgeting problem rather than a shopping problem, and it is the thing most rate comparisons ignore. A rate of AED 250 an hour sounds reasonable in isolation. Two subjects at one weekly hour each for thirty teaching weeks is a different conversation, and a family that has not done that arithmetic before the first phone call tends to make the decision twice: once optimistically in September and again, under pressure, in February.

The Abu Dhabi market quotes in several incompatible ways, which is the second reason families overpay. Some providers quote an hourly rate with marking included and some do not. Some quote a monthly package against a session count and leave the session length vague. Visiting tutors quote a rate that has travel inside it without saying how much, so a family comparing an in-home rate to an online rate is comparing two different products and usually concludes the online one is cheaper for the wrong reason. The honest comparison is per hour of teaching actually received, with marking, and that is the comparison this page sets out.

Abu Dhabi has its own cost drivers, and distance is the obvious one. The emirate is geographically spread in a way Dubai is not: the island, the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, Yas and Saadiyat, and the mainland communities out towards Shakhbout City and Mohammed Bin Zayed City. A visiting tutor crossing from one of those to another at five in the afternoon is spending real time, and that time is in your rate whether or not the invoice names it. Nobody drives forty minutes each way for free, and a tutor who appears not to be charging for it is either charging for it somewhere else or will not last the term.

The second Abu Dhabi driver is cohort size. Diploma cohorts in this emirate are smaller than in Dubai, and for less common Higher Level subjects a school may have three or four candidates. That thins the local supply of anyone who has taught that subject, and thin supply raises the price of the few people who have. It is why a Mathematics HL hour and a Film HL hour are not the same purchase in Abu Dhabi even though both are Diploma hours, and why availability rather than price often becomes the real constraint in February.

What follows is the whole cost picture: the market bands and who publishes them, the travel hour priced out across Abu Dhabi's actual distances, the nine variables that move a Diploma quote in this emirate, how monthly packages compare to paying per session, and where tuition sits inside a Diploma budget alongside school fees and examination registration. IB Gram's figures are not in these tables, because we do not publish a price list: our model is a free first lesson and then a quote that depends on the subject, the level and the rarity of the specialism. What we will do is show you how to read everyone else's.

At a glance

  • Six subjects means the hourly rate matters less than the subject count you commit to
  • Travel sits inside every in-home rate in Abu Dhabi, whether or not it is itemised
  • Ask whether marking between sessions is in the rate; unmarked work is expensive
  • Thin Higher Level subjects cost more here because Abu Dhabi cohorts are small
  • All market figures on this page were read in October 2026 and are attributed
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The programme your child is in changes the rate before anything else does. These are the IB programmes Abu Dhabi families price, with what each one costs differently and why.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

The most expensive hour in the IB range, because the tutor needs subject depth at Higher Level plus familiarity with a specific internally assessed component and its published criteria. Market figures put IB specialist tutoring at roughly AED 200 to 450 an hour, per Bestimate's Dubai rate table, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 at the premium end.

In Abu Dhabi the Diploma premium is sharpened by cohort size. A school with four candidates in a Higher Level subject produces almost no local pool of people who have taught it, so the rate for that subject sits at the top of the band while a Mathematics or Biology hour sits in the middle. Families on Saadiyat Island and Al Reem Island report the widest spread in quotes, which usually reflects subject rarity rather than any difference in quality.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Cheaper per hour than the Diploma and usually cheaper in total, because an MYP student rarely needs more than one or two subjects supported and there is no external examination driving an intensive block. Qualified subject tutors working online sit around AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 as the nearest comparable band.

Abu Dhabi parents often start spending at MYP 4 or 5, when criterion-referenced grades begin to look like they matter for Diploma entry. Spending here is better value than spending in DP2, for an unglamorous reason: an MYP hour fixes marking-language problems that would otherwise cost Diploma hours at double the rate two years later.

PYPAges 3-12

Primary Years Programme

The lowest rates in the range and the shortest sessions, typically forty-five minutes rather than sixty because that is the limit of useful concentration for a primary-age child. Market budget and generalist online bands apply here, which run from roughly AED 33 to 150 an hour depending on the provider, per EdFlik's and Tutopiya's published figures.

The Abu Dhabi complication at primary level is sibling bookings. Families in Al Raha Gardens, Khalifa City and Al Reef frequently have two or three children in the same primary school and ask whether one session can cover them. It can, at a per-student rate below the one-to-one rate, but only where the children are within a year of each other and working on the same thing.

CPAges 16-19

Career-related Programme

Priced like the Diploma for the Diploma courses a student takes, and generally unsupported for the career-related study itself, which is school-specific. The reflective project is coached as a process rather than taught as content, which is slower work and usually priced accordingly.

Few Abu Dhabi schools run the Career-related Programme, so families who need it tend to find no local tutor at all for the career-related element and only subject specialists for the Diploma courses. That is a coverage problem rather than a pricing one, and it is worth establishing before a budget is set.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Diploma subjects do not cost the same amount, and the reason is supply rather than difficulty. These are the subjects Abu Dhabi families ask us to price, with where each sits in the market band and why.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The deepest local pool and therefore the most competitively priced Diploma hour in Abu Dhabi, usually mid-band. Higher Level carries a premium over Standard Level because proof, calculus and the harder optional content narrow the field of people who can teach it confidently.

Physics

HL and SL

Mid to upper band. Supply is reasonable at Standard Level and thinner at Higher Level, where fields and modern physics plus uncertainty treatment in the exploration are the specialist part. Expect a quote above the Mathematics equivalent in this emirate.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Upper-mid band, with organic mechanisms and the exploration's research-question design being the work families actually pay for. Chemistry HL is the single most requested Higher Level subject we see from Abu Dhabi, which keeps its rate firm through the autumn.

Biology

HL and SL

Mid-band and well supplied. Much of the paid work is command-term and timing technique rather than content, which means fewer total hours than Chemistry or Physics for the same grade movement, and a lower overall bill.

Economics

HL and SL

Mid-band for teaching and upper-band for commentary supervision, because the three commentaries are slow criterion-driven work on the student's own text. Families who budget for subject teaching and then discover commentary support is separate are a common pattern.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Mid-band, with the individual oral and the higher-level essay being the components that attract a premium. Supply in Abu Dhabi is adequate rather than deep, and the better specialists are booked early in the autumn.

Arabic

A and B, HL and SL

Variable and often upper-band, because the A and B routes need genuinely different teachers and the pool for language A literary analysis at Higher Level is small. KHDA's published guidance requires schools to teach Arabic in separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, which is the same distinction that governs who can usefully tutor your child.

Visual Arts

HL and SL

Top of the band and frequently unavailable locally. Three internally assessed components and no written papers means the whole grade is criteria work, and the number of people in Abu Dhabi who have marked a process portfolio is very small.

Business Management

HL and SL

Mid-band, with the Higher Level pre-released case study creating a short, expensive window of demand in the spring. Booking that window in the autumn costs considerably less than trying to buy it in March.

Psychology

HL and SL

Mid to upper band. Much of the paid work is the internally assessed experimental study, where the statistics have to be chosen before the design is fixed, and that is slower than content teaching and priced as such.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy Diploma support, priced as they are actually sold in this market. All three of ours run one-to-one over live video; the in-home column exists so you can compare what you are being quoted elsewhere.

Pay per session, one-to-one online

The simplest purchase and the easiest to compare. One subject, one level, one hour, one invoice. The honest version includes marking of work set between sessions; ask explicitly, because a rate that excludes marking is roughly a third cheaper and roughly half as useful. No travel component, so the whole rate buys teaching.

  • Compare per hour of teaching received, with marking included
  • No travel loading, so the rate is not subsidising a commute
  • Cancel or pause between sessions without a package commitment
  • Best for a short technique fix of three to six sessions

Monthly block, one-to-one online

Published market packages in this region include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. A block is usually cheaper per hour than paying per session, and it commits you, so it is the right purchase once a diagnostic has established what is wrong and the wrong one before.

  • Lower effective hourly rate in exchange for commitment
  • Check the session length as well as the session count
  • Ask what happens to unused sessions at the end of a month
  • Right after a diagnosis, wrong as a first purchase

Small group, two to four students

The per-student rate falls sharply, and so does the diagnostic precision, because a group cannot be built around one student's leaking component. It works where several students in the same Abu Dhabi school are sitting the same paper with the same weakness, and badly where they are not. We will say which situation you are in.

  • Lowest per-student cost of any format
  • Needs the same subject, level and weakness across the group
  • Common in Al Raha Gardens and Khalifa City school clusters
  • Not a substitute for Internal Assessment supervision

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What "IB DP home tutor in Abu Dhabi" costs, and what the money buys

A visiting Diploma tutor in Abu Dhabi costs roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour. The lower end of that is Bestimate's published in-home band of AED 180 to 350; the upper end reflects specialist home tutors advertising to AED 500. The same specialist teaching the same subject over live video sits in the AED 200 to 450 band for IB specialists, per Bestimate's rate table, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. The difference between the two is not teaching quality. It is a car.

That matters because the thing a parent is buying is teaching minutes with the right specialist, and a visiting arrangement spends part of the budget on moving a person across Abu Dhabi. It also shrinks the pool of people you may choose from to those willing to make the trip at the hour you need. For a common subject that is a mild constraint. For Visual Arts HL or Film HL in Khalifa City it is usually a complete one.

IB Gram's own answer is to remove the travel and keep the specialist. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, and IB Gram does not send tutors to addresses anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. We do not publish our own hourly figures on this page, because the number depends on the subject, the level and how rare the specialism is, and a single advertised rate would be either misleading or useless. The free first lesson comes before any quote.

The comparison table below is the one to take into any conversation with any provider in this emirate. It compares the same purchase across the formats actually available in Abu Dhabi, including what is inside the rate and what is not. The column that decides most decisions is the last one: how many specialists you can actually choose from.

The travel hour nobody invoices, priced across Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi is a spread-out emirate and that has a price. A tutor who drives from Al Bateen to Khalifa City for a 5pm session, teaches for sixty minutes and drives back has given up well over two hours for one paid hour. Nobody does that at the same rate they would charge for an hour at a desk, and nobody should. The question for a parent is not whether travel is in the rate, because it always is. The question is how much of your budget is buying transport rather than teaching.

The arithmetic is simple and uncomfortable. If a tutor's working evening is three and a half hours and travel eats ninety minutes of it, they can teach two sessions instead of three. To earn the same amount they must charge about half again per session. That is the whole explanation for why in-home bands sit above online bands in every published rate table in this market, including Bestimate's, and it is why the gap widens the further you live from the school clusters.

There is a second cost that never appears in a quote: the sessions that do not happen. A visiting arrangement is fragile in a way an online one is not. Traffic on the Sheikh Zayed bridge, a sandstorm, a tutor's own school commitments, a family's travel, and the session is cancelled or shortened. Over a thirty-week Diploma year, a handful of lost sessions is a meaningful share of what you paid for, and it tends to be lost in exactly the weeks that matter.

None of this means in-home tutoring is a bad product. It means it is a different product with a travel surcharge and a smaller choice of teacher, and it should be compared honestly against the alternative rather than treated as the default. For Diploma subjects specifically, where the match is to one subject at one level, the trade is usually unfavourable: you pay more and choose from fewer specialists.

Nine things that move a Diploma quote in this emirate

Two families in the same Abu Dhabi community can be quoted rates that differ by a factor of three for what sounds like the same thing. Usually nothing dishonest is happening. They are buying different products, and the variables below are the ones doing the work. Reading them in order is also the fastest way to get a quote down without giving anything up.

The biggest single lever is subject rarity, and it is the one parents least expect. A Mathematics HL hour in Abu Dhabi is competitively priced because many people can teach it. A Film HL or Visual Arts HL hour is expensive because almost nobody locally has marked those components, and in a small-cohort emirate that scarcity is sharper than it is in Dubai. If your quote looks high, the first question is whether it is high for the subject or high for the market.

The second lever is the component. Teaching content is faster work than supervising an internally assessed component, where a tutor reads a student's draft, maps it against each criterion and writes feedback that the student then acts on. That is slow and it is usually priced above routine teaching. Families who budget for subject teaching and then discover that Internal Assessment supervision is quoted separately are encountering this, not being overcharged.

The third is timing, and it is entirely within your control. Rates in this market are not formally seasonal, but availability is, and availability is what sets the price you can actually get. Specialists in thin subjects are bookable in September and gone by March. A family that identifies a problem in DP1 is buying from a full market; the same family in the spring of DP2 is buying whatever is left. That is the real cost of waiting, and it is larger than any rate negotiation.

Packages, sessions and the arithmetic of a Diploma year

The hourly rate is the number families negotiate and the session count is the number that decides the bill. A Diploma year of roughly thirty teaching weeks at one weekly hour is thirty hours per subject. At the middle of the IB specialist band that is a meaningful annual figure for one subject, and families supporting two subjects through both Diploma years are making a two-year commitment considerably larger than they usually model at the outset.

Monthly packages change the per-hour maths and are worth asking about. Published market packages in this region include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a single weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the middle, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist examination-year support. Those are the numbers to hold up against any quote you receive.

Three questions separate a good package from a bad one. What is the session length, not just the count? What happens to unused sessions at the end of the month? And is marking of work between sessions inside the price? A package of eight sessions that turns out to mean eight forty-five-minute slots with no marking is a different product from eight marked hours, and the difference is not visible in the headline figure.

The pattern that wastes the most money in Abu Dhabi is buying a block before a diagnosis. A family worried in October commits to three months of weekly hours in a subject, and in week five discovers the weakness was in a different subject, or was a timing problem fixable in two sessions. The sequence that does not waste money is: free diagnostic lesson, written diagnosis, then a block sized to the diagnosis. The order is the saving.

Tuition inside a whole Diploma budget

Tutoring is rarely the only education cost in an Abu Dhabi household, and pricing it in isolation is how families end up surprised. School fees, examination registration where a student is a private candidate, university application costs and the Diploma's own incidental expenses all compete for the same money, and they arrive on a predictable schedule that can be planned around.

The useful framing is a two-year total rather than an hourly rate. Decide how many subjects you will genuinely support, for how many terms, and at what weekly frequency. One subject at one hour a week through both Diploma years is a different commitment from two subjects through DP2 only, and the second is often the better value because it concentrates spending where the grades count and the components fall due.

It is also worth knowing what is not a tutoring cost. The examination registration a school handles for its own candidates is inside the school's fees; a private candidate pays separately and should ask the examination centre directly. Syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes are published by the boards and should be reached through the official sites rather than bought from anyone, because those are copyright works and a tutor distributing copies is a sign to walk away.

On value-added tax, we deliberately say less than other pages do. The treatment of tuition fees under UAE VAT is a matter for the Federal Tax Authority, and we do not state it as fact here. What you should do is ask any provider, including us, whether a quoted dirham figure is inclusive or exclusive of VAT, and ask whether they hold a tax registration number. A provider who cannot answer either question has told you something worth knowing.

The permit question, and what it costs you to skip it

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge and valid for two years
  • Introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023; apply at mohre.gov.ae
  • No fine amounts are published; treat any quoted figure as unverifiable
  • Press-reported ADEK ethics rules close the own-school-teacher route

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work rather than informal work, and this belongs in a pricing section because it changes who may legitimately quote you a rate. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and the eligible categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. MoHRE's own service page, 'Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing', lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system.

Two things follow for a parent comparing quotes. The permit is free, so a tutor who adds a licensing cost to your rate is adding something that does not exist. And individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no fine schedule published anywhere. If a provider quotes you a specific fine figure to create urgency, that figure is not verifiable and the urgency is manufactured.

There is an Abu Dhabi-specific layer. Gulf News has reported that ADEK's professional-ethics rules prohibit private and charter school staff from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and that staff tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. That is press reporting rather than the policy text, so verify the current wording with ADEK. The cost implication is direct: the cheapest apparent option, your child's own subject teacher, is the one route that is closed.

An operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal again. A tuition centre in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, with initial approval first and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. IB Gram holds no regulator or board accreditation of any kind and claims none; we are a matching platform delivering lessons over live video, and we would rather say that plainly than let a logo imply otherwise.

07

Why the cheapest hour is usually the most expensive

  • Budget tutoring is right for supervision and organisation, not for components
  • Insist any diagnosis names a component and a criterion, not an attitude
  • Four expensive specialist sessions often beat twenty cheap generalist ones
  • The real cost of a wasted term is the cheap window it consumed

The budget end of the Abu Dhabi market is real and sometimes right. EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to 52. For homework supervision, for keeping a DP1 student on top of reading, or for a Standard Level subject where the issue is organisation rather than content, that is a sensible purchase and the premium band would be waste.

It stops being sensible the moment the problem is component-specific. A tutor at AED 50 an hour who has never marked an Internal Assessment against its criteria cannot tell your child which criterion is costing the marks, because that knowledge is the entire product. Twenty sessions at AED 50 is a thousand dirhams of pleasant company and no grade movement. Four sessions at AED 300 with someone who has marked forty of those components is twelve hundred dirhams and a different outcome. The arithmetic favours the expensive hour more often than families expect.

The way to tell which you need is to ask for a diagnosis before buying hours, and to insist that the diagnosis names a component. 'He needs to work harder' is not a diagnosis. 'His Paper 2 essays are answering a question he prepared rather than the one asked, and that is costing roughly a grade' is. The second one tells you both what to buy and how much of it, and a tutor who cannot produce that sentence after reading marked work is not the specialist you are paying for.

The other hidden cost is substitution. A cheap arrangement that produces no movement does not just waste the money spent; it consumes the term in which the problem was cheap to fix. Finding out in February that the autumn was wasted is the single most expensive outcome available in Diploma tutoring, and it is almost always the consequence of buying hours before a diagnosis rather than of buying the wrong rate.

08

What money cannot buy in a Diploma, at any rate

  • Tutors teach, mark and give feedback; assessed work stays the student's own
  • Apply the authorship test to any paragraph in a draft, unprompted
  • Official syllabus and paper material belongs on the boards' own sites
  • No rate makes the academic-honesty boundary movable

This section is here because the top of this market includes people selling things that should not be for sale, and an Abu Dhabi parent under pressure in the spring of DP2 is the exact customer for them. One page competing for these searches advertises completed Internal Assessments at a published price. The transaction is straightforward and the consequence falls entirely on the candidate.

The IB's academic-honesty rules require assessed work to be the student's own. A paid tutor may teach the content, explain each criterion, model the technique on a different example, read a draft and say precisely where it does not meet the criterion, and set the student the revision to make. A paid tutor may not supply text that appears in the submission, select the data, restructure a draft into its final form, or hand over a finished component. No rate changes that boundary, and a provider who offers to cross it for a higher fee is pricing your child's candidacy.

The test we use is simple and a parent can apply it without any subject knowledge. Ask your child to explain, unprompted, why a particular paragraph is in the Internal Assessment and what it is doing for the argument. If they cannot, that paragraph is not theirs, however it arrived. The same test works on an Extended Essay and on a Theory of Knowledge submission, and it is a better safeguard than any assurance a provider gives you.

The related thing you cannot legitimately buy is material. IB, Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are copyright works published by the boards. A tutor should cite and link them, and work from the official versions. A provider advertising a private library of unreleased material is selling a risk, and it is your child's risk rather than theirs.

Abu Dhabi's distances are the hidden line item in every in-home quote. These are the communities Diploma families ask from, with what the geography does to a visiting rate and to the hour a session can start.

Al Reem Island

Dense towers, so a visiting tutor can in theory serve several families in one building. In practice the bridge traffic at 5pm decides the start time, and quotes reflect the one-trip-per-evening reality rather than the theoretical density.

Khalifa City and Shakhbout City

A large villa population a genuine drive from the island. Visiting rates here carry the longest travel component in the emirate, which is why these are the communities where the online comparison is most lopsided in cost terms.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

Close to the airport road and reasonably central for a tutor working the corridor, so travel loading is moderate. This is also one of the few areas where enough IB families cluster to make group pricing a real option.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Short commutes and dense school provision, so in-home supply is better here than anywhere else in Abu Dhabi and quotes are correspondingly softer. A 4pm start is realistic, which widens the number of tutors who can take the booking.

Yas Island and West Yas

A newer population with fewer tutors living locally. Families here frequently receive in-home quotes with an explicit travel surcharge, and just as frequently find that no specialist in a thin Higher Level subject will make the trip at all.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Mussafah

The furthest regular drive from the island schools, and the area where in-home rates and the practical start time both suffer most. Weekend blocks are more realistic than weekday evenings for most households here.

Al Reef and Al Falah

Settled villa communities out past the airport. The travel loading is substantial and the local pool is thin, so families here are the most likely to end up paying a premium for a generalist rather than a standard rate for a specialist.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say which subject and which component

A rate cannot be quoted usefully against 'Diploma help'. It can be quoted against 'Chemistry HL, the exploration is three weeks late and the mock was a 4'. That sentence also tells you whether you are buying content teaching or component supervision, which are priced differently everywhere in this market.

  2. 02

Take the free first lesson before any package

The first lesson costs nothing and no payment details are taken to book it. Its purpose is a written diagnosis naming the leaking component and roughly what it will take. Buying a block before this step is the commonest way to waste money on Diploma tutoring in Abu Dhabi.

  3. 03

Size the commitment to the diagnosis

A technique error is three to six sessions. A content gap is eight to twelve with a revisit. A process problem is a calendar, not a tutor. Once you know which one you have, choose between paying per session and a monthly block, and ask what happens to unused sessions.

  4. 04

Compare quotes on the same basis

Per hour of teaching actually received, with marking included, at the session length you will actually use. Ask whether Internal Assessment supervision is quoted separately and whether the figure is inclusive of VAT. Two quotes that look different often turn out to be the same price for different products.

  5. 05

Review on evidence at six weeks

Set the review date when you start, not when you are worried. At it, look at marked work: per-question marks, criterion comments, paper completion times. If none of those have moved, change something. Renewing because the sessions feel pleasant is how a Diploma budget disappears.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The travel surcharge is removed, not disguised

An in-home rate in Abu Dhabi carries a drive inside it. Lessons here run one-to-one over live video, so the whole rate buys teaching. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses; home visits are a service we run only in India, and we say so rather than implying otherwise.

Every figure on this page has a source

The AED bands come from Bestimate's rate table and from the published prices of EdFlik, Tutopiya, Unitors, TutorChase and BartyED, read in October 2026. Three of the best-ranking pages in this market publish no price at all, and two quote US dollars.

A diagnosis before a package

The free first lesson produces a written note naming the leaking component. That is what sizes the commitment, and it is the step that stops a family buying three months of the wrong subject. It also sometimes concludes that no tutoring is needed.

Subject rarity does not become your problem

In a small-cohort emirate, a thin Higher Level subject locally means a high price or nobody at all. Matching online removes the scarcity premium, because the pool is every specialist free at that hour rather than those willing to drive to your community.

We do not quote what we cannot stand behind

No price list on this page, because a Diploma rate depends on subject, level and scarcity. No VAT position stated as fact, because that belongs to the Federal Tax Authority. No fine figures for unpermitted tutoring, because none are published.

The academic-honesty line is not a price point

Tutors review and give feedback on the student's own work and nothing more, at any rate. One page competing for this search sells finished Internal Assessments; the consequence of that purchase lands on the candidate, not on the seller.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How much does an IB DP home tutor in Abu Dhabi charge per hour?+

Market in-home one-to-one rates run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour. Bestimate's Dubai tutoring rate table publishes AED 180 to 350 for in-home visits, and specialist home tutors advertise up to AED 500. The same specialist teaching online sits in the AED 200 to 450 band for IB specialists, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. The gap between the two is travel, not teaching. Those are market figures read in October 2026, not IB Gram's prices; ours follow a free first lesson and depend on the subject, the level and how scarce the specialism is.

Why does a visiting tutor cost more than the same tutor online?+

Because a visiting tutor is selling you a slice of their evening, not just an hour of teaching. A round trip from the island to Khalifa City at five in the afternoon can exceed an hour, which means two sessions in an evening instead of three. To earn the same amount the rate has to rise by roughly half. There is also a fragility cost: traffic, weather and scheduling clashes cancel visiting sessions in a way they do not cancel a video call, and those lost sessions are part of what you paid for.

Should I pay for ninety-minute sessions or sixty?+

Sixty for content teaching, ninety for internally assessed component work. A content session has a natural length: diagnose, teach, practise, set work. Ninety minutes of that is usually twenty minutes of diminishing returns. Component supervision is different, because reading a draft, mapping it against criteria and agreeing the next revision does not compress well. Ninety-minute blocks also usually carry a lower effective hourly rate, so ask for both figures. For a student under sixteen, sixty minutes is the practical ceiling regardless of the subject.

Does the rate include marking between sessions?+

Ask, because it is the single largest difference between two quotes that look identical. A rate without marking is roughly a third cheaper and substantially less useful, since the whole mechanism of a weekly hour is that work is set, attempted, marked and then revisited. A tutor who sets nothing between sessions is running a conversation rather than a course. Our sessions set work and mark it before the next one, and we would rather you asked every provider the question than assumed it of any of them.

Is a monthly package cheaper than paying per session in Abu Dhabi?+

Usually yes per hour, and it commits you. Published market packages in this region include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. Before buying one, establish three things: the session length rather than just the count, what happens to unused sessions at month end, and whether marking is inside the price. A block bought after a diagnosis is good value. A block bought before one is the commonest way families in this emirate waste a term's budget.

How many hours a week does a DP2 student actually need?+

For one subject with a technique problem, one hour a week for six weeks and then stop. For one Higher Level subject with a genuine content gap, one hour a week through the year with a revisit cycle. For two subjects, two separate specialists at one hour each rather than one tutor stretched across both. More than three tutored hours a week in DP2 usually competes with the student's own revision and starts producing less, not more, which is a point no provider has an incentive to tell you.

Do rates go up before the May session?+

Rates do not formally move, but availability does, and availability is what sets the price you can actually get. Specialists in thin Higher Level subjects are bookable in September and largely gone by March. A family identifying a weakness in DP1 chooses from a full market at the standard band; the same family in the spring of DP2 chooses from what is left, at whatever that costs. The practical effect is a premium for waiting, and it is bigger than anything you could negotiate off an hourly rate.

What does Internal Assessment supervision cost compared with subject teaching?+

Generally above the teaching rate, because the work is slower. A tutor reads the student's draft, maps it against each published criterion, writes feedback and then sets the revision for the student to make. That cannot be done at the pace of a content lesson. Many providers in this market quote it separately, and families who budget only for teaching are then surprised. Ask for both figures at the start. The hours are also concentrated between the summer of DP1 and the autumn of DP2 rather than spread across the year.

Is there VAT on private tuition in the UAE?+

The treatment of tuition fees under UAE value-added tax is a matter for the Federal Tax Authority, and we will not state it as fact on a tutoring page. What you should do is practical: ask any provider, including us, whether a quoted dirham figure is inclusive or exclusive of VAT, and whether they hold a tax registration number. Get the answer in writing alongside the rate. A provider who cannot answer either question clearly has told you something useful about how the rest of the arrangement will be handled.

Can two of my children share one paid session?+

Sometimes, and the test is whether they are working on the same thing. Two siblings in the same Diploma subject at the same level with the same weakness can share an hour at a per-student rate well below one-to-one. Two siblings in different subjects or different years cannot, and an hour split between them delivers less than half an hour each. At primary and lower middle school the arithmetic is friendlier because the content overlaps more. For Diploma subjects it rarely works, because the match is to one subject at one level.

What is the cheapest honest way to support a Diploma student in Abu Dhabi?+

Start with the school. Subject teachers hold clinics, departments publish revision materials, and the Diploma coordinator can often explain a predicted grade in a way that changes what you need to buy. Then take a free diagnostic lesson to establish whether the problem is knowledge, technique or process. A technique problem is three to six sessions with a specialist and nothing more. Buying thirty sessions of generalist support because it has a low hourly rate is the most expensive cheap option available in this market.

Does a tutor who lives in Abu Dhabi cost more than one based elsewhere?+

For in-home work, where the tutor lives decides both the rate and whether they will take the booking at all. For online work it is largely irrelevant, which is the point: the match is made on subject and level rather than on postcode, and the rate reflects the specialism rather than the commute. Where no suitable specialist is available in the UAE at your hours, a tutor based elsewhere teaching on Gulf Standard Time over the same video link is the alternative, and we tell you that before you commit rather than after.

How do I compare two quotes that are not quoting the same thing?+

Reduce both to one number: dirhams per hour of teaching actually received, with marking included, at the session length you will really use. Then check four things on each. Is travel inside the rate? Is Internal Assessment supervision separate? Is the figure inclusive of VAT? And is the named tutor actually teaching that subject at that level this year? Most apparent price gaps in the Abu Dhabi market close once those four are equalised, and the ones that remain usually reflect subject scarcity rather than quality.

Is the free trial lesson genuinely free, and what is the condition?+

It is one free first lesson per student, booked through a consultation, and no payment details are taken to arrange it. The condition worth stating is what it is for: it is a diagnostic, not a sample lesson, so it involves marked work being looked at and the student attempting something under time. It ends with a written note naming the leaking component. If the honest conclusion is that the problem belongs with the school rather than with a tutor, the note says that and nothing is sold.

What should I budget for the whole two years of the Diploma?+

Model it as subjects multiplied by weeks rather than as an hourly rate. One subject at one weekly hour across roughly thirty teaching weeks is thirty hours a year, and Bestimate's monthly estimates put a weekly specialist hour at AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more in an examination year. Decide how many subjects you will genuinely support and in which year. Concentrating two subjects into DP2, when grades count and components fall due, is usually better value than spreading thin support across both years.

Get the diagnosis, then the number

The right sequence saves more than any rate negotiation. Find out which component is losing the marks, size the commitment to that answer, and only then compare quotes on the same basis: dirhams per teaching hour, marking included, at the session length you will actually use. Tell us the subject, the level and what the last marked piece said. The first lesson is free, no payment details are taken to book it, and it ends with a written note you can use even if you hire somebody else. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and if no specialist in that subject is free at your hours we will say so before you commit.
