IGCSE Maths Tutor in Al Manaseer

The real question behind a search for an IGCSE maths tutor in Al Manaseer is whether anybody within reach actually knows the specification your child sits. Not maths in general. Cambridge 0580 at Extended tier, or Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 at Higher, with the right paper structure and the right mark scheme. This page gives you the questions that settle it in ten minutes, and an honest account of what we can and cannot cover at an Abu Dhabi evening hour.

IB & IGCSE in Al Manaseer

Knowing maths and knowing your child's maths specification are different things

Al Manaseer is not short of people who can do IGCSE maths. It sits in the middle of a dense, well-educated part of Abu Dhabi island, between Al Khalidiyah and Al Bateen, full of engineers, accountants, former teachers and graduate students who could solve every question on a Year 11 paper. The scarcity is not mathematical competence. It is knowledge of the specific assessment your child is sitting, and those two things are routinely confused by everybody involved in the transaction.

Here is the distinction in practice. A capable graduate can teach a student to factorise a quadratic. Only somebody who knows the specification can tell you that the Cambridge Extended tier sets a non-calculator paper worth half the grade, that most school practice happens with a calculator and that your child is therefore almost certainly weaker than their report suggests in exactly the half of the assessment nobody is rehearsing. The first person improves a skill. The second person changes a grade.

The same gap shows up everywhere. Which paper permits a calculator. Whether the tier caps the grade at C, at 5, at A star or at 9. Why area scale factors are squared and volume scale factors cubed, and why that single misunderstanding costs a whole question. What a mark scheme pays for when a student writes nothing down. Where the boundary sits between the Core and Extended content lists. A generalist will answer all of these plausibly and some of them wrongly, and a parent has no way of telling which is which without asking better questions. Each of those is a fact about the assessment rather than an opinion about teaching, which is what makes the gap testable in a short conversation.

So this page is mostly a set of questions. Ask them of any tutor, local or otherwise, and listen for precision rather than warmth. Then there is the honest second half: what IB Gram can actually cover at an Al Manaseer evening hour, and what it cannot. None of the competitor pages researched for this project discloses a coverage limit anywhere, which makes their implied availability worth exactly nothing to a parent planning a year. Implied availability is cheap to publish and expensive to rely on.

On delivery, so it is clear from the start: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Visits to a family's address are a service we run only in India. Al Manaseer lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. That is also what makes specification-level matching possible, because the question stops being who knows 0580 and lives near Al Khalidiyah and becomes simply who knows 0580. Removing distance from the filter does not remove anything a parent values; it removes the one condition that has no bearing on the grade.

At a glance

  • Mathematical competence is common; specification knowledge is not
  • Cambridge 0580 Extended sets a non-calculator paper worth half the grade
  • Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 permits a calculator on both papers
  • Tier sets the grade ceiling: C, 5, A star or 9, depending on entry
  • No researched competitor in this market discloses a coverage limit
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three stages of British-curriculum maths matter to an Al Manaseer family, and the specification knowledge a tutor needs changes at each one.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3 maths, Years 7 to 9

No external specification yet, which is why a capable generalist is often genuinely sufficient here. What matters at this stage is diagnosing the fluency that will decide a tier two years later: fractions without a calculator, negative and fractional indices, rearrangement, and the habit of writing method down.

Al Manaseer households frequently move a child between Abu Dhabi schools during these years, and a transfer can change the maths scheme of work substantially without changing the apparent level. Asking the new department which topics the student has missed is a better use of an hour than any amount of general consolidation.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Mathematics, Years 10 and 11

The stage at which specification knowledge becomes the whole question. Cambridge 0580 splits into Core, capped at grade C, and Extended, reaching A star. Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 splits into Foundation, capped at grade 5, and Higher, reaching grade 9. The content lists, paper structures and calculator rules all differ, and a tutor on the wrong one prepares a student for the wrong exam.

Abu Dhabi candidates sit the June and November Cambridge series; the February and March series is offered to India only. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that using the wrong zone timetable is the centre's risk, which is a question for the exams officer rather than for a tutor.

Post-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A-Level Mathematics and IB maths routes

Entry to A-Level Mathematics commonly needs a grade 7 or A, and IB Analysis and Approaches assumes Extended-level algebra from the first week. The IGCSE maths grade is therefore the gate rather than a milestone, and the tier that produced it determines whether the gate was ever open.

Al Manaseer students continuing in maths either stay on the western island for A-Levels or move to IB campuses on Al Reem Island, Saadiyat Island and Al Raha. Either route reads the IGCSE maths grade first, which is why the tier conversation belongs in Year 10 and not in a results-day conversation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the specific areas where specification knowledge, rather than general mathematical ability, decides whether an hour of tutoring is worth anything.

Cambridge 0580 Extended, the non-calculator paper

Extended tier

Half the Extended grade, sat by hand. Fractions, standard form, surds and index laws performed at speed without technology. School practice rarely rehearses it, so most students are weaker here than their report implies. A tutor who does not know this paper exists cannot plan around it.

Cambridge 0580 Extended, the calculator paper

Extended tier

The other half, with longer multi-step questions carrying the heavier algebra, trigonometry, vectors and probability. The dominant loss is method marks on questions the student can answer, because nothing was written down. Training here is about writing, not knowing.

Cambridge 0580 Core

Core tier

Graded C to G, with a narrower content list than Extended and its own pair of papers. Teaching a Core student from Extended material wastes their time on content they will never be assessed on, which happens whenever a tutor does not check the tier.

Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 Higher

Higher tier

Grades 9 to 4 across two equally weighted papers with a calculator permitted on both. Expects confident algebraic manipulation, functions, graph transformations and vectors. Cambridge-trained tutors sometimes misjudge the balance here because the calculator rule changes what the papers test.

Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 Foundation

Foundation tier

Grades 5 to 1, with a content list that overlaps Higher but stops short of its harder algebra and trigonometry. Knowing where that line falls is specification knowledge, and teaching past it is a common and expensive waste of a Foundation student's limited hours.

Similar shapes and scale factors

Extended and Higher

Area scales by the square of the linear factor and volume by the cube. A student applying the linear factor loses an entire question, and it is the single most predictable Extended-tier error. Fixable in one session by anyone who knows to look for it.

Trigonometry rule selection

Extended and Higher

Sine rule, cosine rule, area formula, bearings and three-dimensional problems. Mark loss comes from choosing the wrong rule rather than applying one badly, so useful practice is rapid identification under timing rather than repeated worked examples.

Algebraic fractions and quadratics

Extended and Higher

Completing the square, the quadratic formula, simultaneous equations with one non-linear, and algebraic fraction manipulation. Insecurity here leaks into topics that look unrelated, including mensuration and probability, which is why a diagnosis has to start with algebra.

Probability trees and set notation

Core, Extended, both boards

The arithmetic is easy and the structure is not. Trees are usually drawn correctly then read along the wrong branch. Set and Venn notation differs in emphasis between the two boards, which is another place a tutor on the wrong specification gives sound but misdirected teaching.

Whole-paper timing in Year 11

Both boards, both tiers

Papers sat under exam conditions against the right specification's structure, then dissected against what that board's mark scheme rewards. Practising Cambridge timing for an Edexcel paper, or the reverse, teaches a pacing habit that does not transfer.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements fit this problem, and which one you need depends on how confident you already are about the specification and the gap.

A single diagnostic session first

One hour with a tutor who has the correct specification in front of them and your child's most recent marked work. It ends with a written gap list in the language of that syllabus, naming papers and topics. For a family unsure whether the problem is content, technique or tier, this is the only purchase worth making before any package.

  • Correct specification confirmed before the session begins
  • Diagnosis from the student's own marked script
  • A written gap list naming papers and topics
  • No package committed until the gap is named

A weekly slot tied to the school's sequence

One sixty-minute session a week at a fixed time from 6pm, following the order your child's department is actually teaching in rather than a generic syllabus order. Notes and worked solutions are saved so revision in the spring can reopen the autumn's work instead of starting again.

  • Same tutor and time from September onwards
  • Agenda set by the school's scheme of work
  • Saved whiteboard and worked solutions
  • Reviewed at six weeks against school evidence

Whole-paper work on the right board

Weekend morning sessions in which the student sits a full paper from their own specification under timing, and the session is spent on the dissection. Pacing habits do not transfer between boards, so practising the wrong structure builds the wrong instincts about how long a question is allowed to take.

  • Papers from the student's own specification only
  • Sat under real timing before the session starts
  • Dissected against that board's mark scheme
  • Two a month from February of Year 11

The questions that separate a maths graduate from a specification teacher

  • Which specification and code, exactly?
  • Which paper permits a calculator?
  • What grade does the entered tier cap at?
  • Where do students on this specification lose marks, by topic?
  • What do you want to see before the first session?

Ask these before you hire anybody, local or otherwise. They take about ten minutes and they are answerable precisely or not at all, which is the whole point. A tutor who knows the specification answers in specifics within a sentence. A tutor who does not answers in general terms about experience, confidence and rapport, and a parent who is listening for the difference can hear it immediately.

The questions are not difficult or hostile. Which specification does my child sit, and what is its code? Which of their papers permits a calculator? What does the tier they are entered for cap the grade at? Where do students on this specification most commonly lose marks, by topic? What would you want to see before the first session? None of these requires the tutor to have met your child. All of them require them to have taught the course.

The table below sets out what a precise answer sounds like next to a vague one. It is worth doing this even with a recommendation from a trusted neighbour, because informal hiring in dense Abu Dhabi districts runs on reputation rather than on specification, and reputation is usually built on a different child sitting a different paper. A tutor who was excellent for a Foundation-tier student two years ago may be the wrong person entirely for an Extended-tier candidate now. Ask them in that order, too. The specification question first, because every other answer depends on it, and the question about what the tutor wants to see last, because it reveals whether the first session will be diagnosis or small talk.

Why 0580 and 4MA1 are not interchangeable

The two specifications cover similar mathematics and assess it differently, and the difference is large enough to change a grade. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 splits into Core and Extended, with Core graded C to G and Extended reaching A star. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics Specification A, code 4MA1, splits into Foundation at grades 5 to 1 and Higher at grades 9 to 4.

The structural difference that matters most is the calculator. On the Cambridge route each tier sets one paper without a calculator and one with, so half the grade depends on by-hand fluency. On the Edexcel route a calculator is permitted on both papers. A tutor who trained on Edexcel and is teaching a Cambridge Extended student will often under-rehearse non-calculator work simply because it was never half of anything in their experience, and the student's report will not flag it because school assessments usually mirror the school's own habits rather than the exam's.

There are smaller differences too: content boundaries between tiers, emphasis in set notation and vectors, question phrasing, and the pacing a mark scheme implies. None is dramatic in isolation. Together they mean that past papers from the wrong board build the wrong instincts about how long a six-mark question should take and what the examiner expects written down. The fix is trivial once anybody checks: look at a past paper the school issued, read the code on the front, and tell the tutor.

What we can cover at an Al Manaseer evening hour, and what we cannot

  • Well covered: both boards, all four tiers, 6pm to 8pm Gulf Standard Time
  • Tighter: slots after 8.30pm, named-tutor requests, the fortnight after mocks
  • Hardest: a Year 11 start requested in April, when capacity is already committed
  • You get a date, a named alternative with its limits, or an honest no

Every provider in this market implies unlimited availability and none of the pages researched for this project states a coverage limit. That makes their implied availability useless for planning. Here is the honest version for IGCSE maths specifically, which is one of the better-covered requests in the UAE.

IGCSE maths at Core, Extended, Foundation and Higher on both specifications is comfortably covered at Abu Dhabi evening hours, including the 6pm to 8pm window Al Manaseer households actually need. Non-calculator technique, whole-paper work and tier diagnostics are all straightforward to staff. Where it gets tighter is the narrow end: a particular tutor requested by name, a slot after 8.30pm, a weekend morning in the fortnight after mocks when every family in the emirate wants one, and Year 11 starts requested in April.

When a request cannot be met well there are three honest answers and you get whichever applies. A waiting time with a date attached. A named tutor who covers the specification solidly but is not the deepest specialist, with that limitation spelt out. Or a statement that we cannot cover it well at the hours you need, which is sometimes correct and always better than a mismatch that burns a term. What does not happen is a quiet substitution: you are told who is teaching your child and what they have taught, before the trial rather than after it. There is one more honest limit worth naming. A request for a specific tutor by name, after a recommendation, is often the hardest of all to meet, because the tutors who get recommended are the ones already carrying a full week.

04

Where the marks actually go, paper by paper

  • Method marks lost to unshown working, on questions the student can do
  • Premature rounding turning correct method into a wrong answer
  • Area and volume scale factors applied as linear ones
  • Sine and cosine rules chosen wrongly rather than applied badly
  • Non-calculator arithmetic secure with a calculator and absent without

Mark loss in IGCSE maths is unusually predictable, which is exactly why specification knowledge pays. A tutor who has taught the course knows the error list before meeting the student and can test for each item in the first hour. A generalist discovers them one at a time over a term, at the family's expense.

The list is short. Unshown working is the largest single cause: on a multi-step question most marks are method marks, so a correct answer with no visible route scores less than a wrong answer with a clear one. Then premature rounding, which turns a correct method into a wrong answer. Then scale factors in similar shapes, where area is squared and volume cubed and students apply the linear factor. Then trigonometric rule selection. Then probability trees read along the wrong branch. Then non-calculator arithmetic that is secure with technology and absent without.

What makes this useful rather than merely interesting is that each item is diagnosable from a marked script in about fifteen minutes, and each is fixable in one to three sessions. A tutor who asks to see the last mock before the first session is planning to do that. A tutor who says send me nothing and we will see how it goes is planning to spend your first four sessions discovering what the script would have told them on day one. The useful consequence is that an IGCSE maths diagnosis is a short job rather than a long one. Anybody who needs a month to tell you what is wrong has not read the script.

05

What a tutor cannot know, and should ask the school

  • The specification code and tier, in writing from the school
  • The centre's Cambridge administrative zone, from the exams officer
  • The school's mock dates and assessment calendar
  • The department's teaching order for the remaining topics

Specification knowledge has limits, and an honest tutor names them rather than guessing. Several of the facts that most affect a Year 11 maths plan are held only by the school, and a tutor who claims to know them without asking is making things up.

The school holds the entry tier and whether it can still be changed. The school holds the exams officer's knowledge of which of Cambridge's six administrative zones the centre sits in, which matters because Cambridge states plainly that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam otherwise. The school holds its own assessment calendar, its mock dates, and the order it is teaching topics in. The school also holds whether a student is on a reduced subject load or has access arrangements.

So the first week of any sensible arrangement involves three questions sent to the school, not to the tutor: which specification and tier is my child entered for, when are the mocks, and in what order is the department teaching the remaining topics? Those three answers let a tutor build a plan that fits rather than one that competes. It is also a short email, and the number of families who never send it is the reason so many tutoring plans end up teaching a topic the week after the school assessed it. A tutor who says I will ask the school rather than guessing is demonstrating something useful about how the rest of the arrangement will run.

06

Permits, approved tutors, and which claims are verifiable

A search in a dense Abu Dhabi district surfaces agencies, platforms, centres and individuals advertising through building groups, and they are not all on the same legal footing. The rules are specific and checkable, which is more than can be said for most of the credentials advertised alongside them.

An individual giving private lessons in the UAE needs a private tuition work permit from MoHRE, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through its smart app, website and e-services system. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so quoted amounts are unverified.

What no permit does is certify teaching quality. No UAE regulator approves individual private tutors on merit, so the phrase approved tutors, however it is dressed, should be read as marketing. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a specific thing with a renewal cycle and is also not an endorsement of anyone's teaching. IB Gram holds no ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, Ministry, IB, Cambridge or Pearson accreditation, partnership or licence, and no school named on this page is a client or a partner.

Why the IGCSE maths grade matters after Year 11

  • A-Level Maths commonly expects grade 7 or A, which Core and Foundation cannot produce
  • IB Analysis and Approaches assumes Extended-level algebra from week one
  • MoE British-track equivalency counts five subjects at no less than E or grade 3
  • Arabic and Islamic education sit outside that count of five

A maths grade at sixteen is read by more people than a family expects, and that is an argument for getting the tier and the specification right rather than for anxiety. Three audiences use it, and they use it differently.

Sixth forms and IB campuses use it as an entry gate. A-Level Mathematics commonly expects a grade 7 or A; the sciences and economics usually expect a strong maths grade too; IB Analysis and Approaches assumes Extended-level algebra from the first week. A Core or Foundation entry closes these regardless of how well the student performed within that tier, which is why the entry decision in Year 10 is a conversation about options rather than about this year's report.

The Ministry of Education uses it differently again. On the British track, equivalency requires a pass in five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, together with one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. One competitor page in this market states that six IGCSE subjects are required, which contradicts the published rule. Equivalency is the Ministry's process, not a school's or a tutor's, so confirm current requirements on moe.gov.ae before planning around them. Neither audience reads the tier, only the grade, which is precisely why the tier decision deserves attention while it is still open.

08

The fortnight after mocks, and why it is the best hour you will buy

  • One session per weak subject, within two weeks of the mock
  • Bring the marked script itself, not a summary of the grade
  • After six weeks the diagnosis turns into generalities
  • Book it in November, because the holidays sit in the window

If an Al Manaseer family buys only one session all year, it should be one session per weak subject in the two weeks after mocks, with the marked script on the screen. The reason is not sentiment. It is that a mock script is the only honest, specific, personal diagnostic available before the real series, and its value decays quickly.

Within a fortnight the student still remembers what they were thinking at question seventeen, and can recognise an error as their own rather than as an abstract possibility. A tutor who knows the specification can turn that script into a list: method not shown here, rounded too early there, cosine rule where the sine rule was signalled, ran out of time with two questions untouched. Each of those is fixable, and several of them are fixable in one session.

Six weeks later the paper is cold, the student has forgotten their reasoning and the conversation becomes general. The difficulty is that the school holidays usually fall inside exactly that fortnight, which is why the booking has to be made in November for December rather than discovered in January. It is also the single busiest request in the Abu Dhabi tutoring calendar, so a family that plans it early gets a specialist and a family that improvises gets whoever is left. One further argument for it: the session costs the same in December as in March and is worth several times more, which is unusual enough in this market to be worth acting on.

Where we tutor

Al Manaseer and the western island districts served

The districts around Al Manaseer and the school directions its families travel. Because lessons are online, specification-level matching is available identically in each of them.

Al Manaseer

Apartment blocks on the western island between Al Khalidiyah and Al Bateen. A dense, long-settled population with plenty of mathematical ability in it and very few people who have taught a specific IGCSE specification to a cohort.

Al Khalidiyah

Directly north, with a mix of school destinations and slow afternoon traffic on its retail streets. Households here often hire informally through building networks, which is where specification mismatches most commonly originate.

Al Bateen

West and south, with several established campuses close by. The shortest school runs from Al Manaseer and the one direction where a weekday session before six is genuinely comfortable.

Al Ras Al Akhdar

The western tip, quieter and more spread out, with longer internal drives than the map suggests. Smaller school-age population and correspondingly thinner informal tutoring networks.

Al Manhal

Inland and adjacent, with children split between the western island and the Al Mushrif cluster. Two campuses in one household is common and complicates any arrangement that depends on somebody travelling.

Al Khubeirah

Between Al Manaseer and the Corniche, largely residential, with a school pattern that reaches across the island. Families here are among the most likely to be managing a long run and a short one on the same afternoon.

Al Mushrif

Fifteen to twenty-five minutes east and the densest concentration of British-curriculum provision on the island, so the largest number of IGCSE candidates in one place.

Al Nahyan

Further east again, with long-established private schools using both Cambridge and Pearson specifications, sometimes within the same school for different subjects.

School ecosystem

Al Bateen and the western island

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Find the specification code and send it

Look at a past paper the school issued or ask the head of maths. Cambridge 0580 or Pearson Edexcel 4MA1, and the tier your child is entered for. This single piece of information determines who should teach them and what the sessions should rehearse.

  2. 02

    Send the last marked paper

A mock or school assessment with the marking intact. Most IGCSE mark loss is visible on the page and invisible in a report, and a tutor who has the script can name the error list in fifteen minutes rather than discovering it over four sessions.

  3. 03

    Ask us the five questions

Which specification, which paper allows a calculator, what the tier caps at, where marks are lost by topic, and how many cohorts the tutor has taught. You get the named tutor and their answers before the trial, not after it.

  4. 04

Take the free trial and read the gap list

The trial is a working session that ends with a written gap list in the language of your child's syllabus, naming papers and topics. If the fit is wrong, the match changes and nothing is owed. A mismatch caught in week one costs an hour.

  5. 05

Book the post-mock session in November

The fortnight after mocks is the highest-value booking in the year and the busiest week in the Abu Dhabi calendar. Reserving it before the mocks happen is the difference between a specialist and whoever has capacity left in January.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by code and tier, not by subject name

The request we take is Cambridge 0580 Extended or Edexcel 4MA1 Higher, not IGCSE maths. That distinction is what decides whether half a Cambridge grade gets rehearsed, and it is invisible in most hiring conversations.

The named tutor, with their cohorts, before the trial

You know who is teaching your child and which specifications and tiers they have actually taught, stated before the first lesson. There is no quiet substitution, and if the trial does not fit, the match changes.

Coverage limits said out loud

IGCSE maths is well covered at the evening hours Al Manaseer needs. Slots after 8.30pm, peak post-mock weekends and April starts in Year 11 are not always coverable, and you are told which applies at enquiry.

Diagnosis from the script, not from a chapter list

The first session works from your child's own marked paper, because unshown working, early rounding and scale-factor errors are visible there and nowhere else. A tutor who wants nothing in advance will find them slowly.

No travel folded into the rate

Market in-home rates in the UAE run AED 180 to 500 an hour because they include a tutor crossing the island. An online hour is sixty minutes of teaching, and it is also the reason specification matching is possible at all.

Only claims that can be checked

No regulator or board accreditation, partnership or licence is held or implied, no self-published ratings, and no fine figures for unpermitted tutoring because none is officially published. Everything else points at a primary source.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Manaseer: your questions answered

Is there anyone near Al Manaseer who actually knows my child's maths specification?+

There is no shortage of mathematical ability in this part of Abu Dhabi island, and a genuine shortage of people who have taught a specific IGCSE specification to a cohort. Those are different things. A capable graduate can teach factorising; only someone who knows the syllabus will tell you that Cambridge Extended sets a non-calculator paper worth half the grade and that your child has barely rehearsed it. The practical answer is to stop filtering by distance, filter by specification and tier instead, and ask the five questions on this page before hiring anybody.

What should I ask a maths tutor before the first lesson?+

Five things, and they take ten minutes. Which specification does my child sit, with the code? Which of their papers permits a calculator? What does their entry tier cap the grade at? Where do students on this specification most commonly lose marks, by topic? And what do you want to see before the first session? A tutor who has taught the course answers each in a sentence. One who has not answers in general terms about experience and confidence, which is a different and much less useful kind of answer.

Does it genuinely matter whether a tutor trained on Cambridge or on Edexcel?+

Yes, mainly because of the calculator. Cambridge 0580 sets one paper per tier without a calculator, so half that grade rests on by-hand fluency. Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 permits a calculator on both papers. A tutor whose experience is entirely Edexcel will often under-rehearse non-calculator work for a Cambridge student, not through carelessness but because it was never half of anything in their experience. Content boundaries between tiers, set notation emphasis and paper pacing differ too, and past papers from the wrong board build the wrong timing instincts.

Will a tutor come to our apartment in Al Manaseer?+

Not through IB Gram. We do not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; visits to a family's address are a service we run only in India. Other Abu Dhabi providers do offer it, and market rates for in-home one-to-one sit at AED 180 to 500 an hour because the figure absorbs the journey. Al Manaseer lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and that is also what makes specification-level matching possible, because the pool stops being limited to people who live within a drive.

How do I find out which specification and tier my child is entered for?+

Two routes, both quick. Look at the front of any past paper the school has issued, where the code is printed, or email the head of maths and ask for the specification code and the tier in writing. While you are sending that email, ask two more things: when the mocks are, and in what order the department is teaching the remaining topics. Those three answers are what let a tutor build a plan that fits the school rather than one that competes with it, and very few families ever ask for them.

Can you tell me whether my child's entry tier can still be changed?+

No, and any tutor who claims to know is guessing. The entry tier is held by the school and submitted by its exams officer to the board's deadline, months before the papers. Once submitted it is fixed for that series. Before that point a department will usually consider evidence, which is why a written diagnostic report from a specialist carries more weight in that conversation than a parent's impression does. The question to put to the school is what the current tier caps the grade at and what that closes after Year 11.

What are the most predictable ways IGCSE maths marks are lost?+

Unshown working leads by a distance: on a multi-step question most marks are method marks, so a correct answer with no visible route scores less than a wrong answer with a clear one. Then premature rounding, which turns correct method into a wrong answer. Then scale factors, where area scales by the square and volume by the cube and students apply the linear factor. Then choosing between the sine and cosine rules. Then probability trees read along the wrong branch. Each is diagnosable from a marked script in minutes and fixable in one to three sessions.

Why does a tutor want to see a marked paper before starting?+

Because the script contains information no report does. A grade tells you the result; a marked paper shows the mechanism. Where method stopped being written down, where rounding happened too early, which rule was chosen wrongly, whether the last two questions were untouched because time ran out. A specialist reading your child's script can produce a specific, prioritised list in about fifteen minutes. A tutor who asks for nothing in advance will find the same list eventually, over the first four sessions, at your expense.

Are there times of year you cannot cover an IGCSE maths request?+

Yes, and it is worth saying rather than implying otherwise. Both specifications at all four tiers are comfortably covered in the 6pm to 8pm Gulf Standard Time window Al Manaseer households need. It gets tighter for slots after 8.30pm, for weekend mornings in the fortnight after mocks when every family in the emirate wants one, and for Year 11 starts requested in April, which frequently cannot be covered well at all. In each case you get a waiting time with a date, a named alternative with its limits stated, or an honest no.

What does it mean if a provider advertises approved tutors in Abu Dhabi?+

Usually nothing verifiable. No UAE regulator approves individual private tutors on teaching merit. MoHRE issues a work permit to an individual, which is a legal clearance granted free of charge for two years rather than a quality judgement. In Dubai, KHDA issues an Educational Services Permit to a training institute with premises, which is also not an endorsement of anyone's teaching. For completeness, IB Gram holds no ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, Ministry, IB, Cambridge or Pearson accreditation, partnership or licence, and no school named here is a client.

Should I trust a recommendation from a neighbour in our building?+

Trust it as a starting point and then check the specification. Informal hiring in dense Abu Dhabi districts runs on reputation, and reputation is almost always built on a different child sitting a different paper. A tutor who was excellent for a Foundation-tier student two years ago may be the wrong person for an Extended-tier candidate now, and nobody in that chain has done anything wrong. Ask the same five questions you would ask a stranger. A good tutor will not mind, and the answers take ten minutes.

How much of the final grade can realistically change in one term?+

Enough to matter, and nobody honest will promise a figure. What can be said is where the movement usually comes from. Non-calculator fluency on the Cambridge route is a trained motor skill and improves quickly with short, frequent practice. Showing method is a habit that breaks in about three sessions. Scale factors and rule selection are single-session fixes. Those together often move a student who was losing marks on questions they understood. What does not move quickly is a two-year content gap, which is why starting in April is the expensive option.

Does the IGCSE maths grade affect my child's options beyond Year 11?+

Substantially, and in two separate ways. Sixth forms and IB campuses use it as an entry gate: A-Level Mathematics commonly expects a grade 7 or A, and IB Analysis and Approaches assumes Extended-level algebra from the first week, so a Core or Foundation entry closes those routes regardless of how well the student did within the tier. Separately, the Ministry of Education counts five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3 for British-track equivalency, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count.

Which schools do your IGCSE maths students on the western island come from?+

Families around Al Manaseer come from campuses in Al Bateen and on the western island and from larger British-curriculum schools further east, including the American Community School of Abu Dhabi, Al Bateen Academy, Cambridge International School Abu Dhabi, The British School Al Khubairat, International Community School Abu Dhabi and Abu Dhabi International School. Those names describe the local school map and nothing more. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement relationship with any of them, and none of them is a client of ours.

If one session is all we can afford, when should we use it?+

In the two weeks after mocks, with the marked script in front of a tutor who knows the specification. That is the only honest personal diagnostic available before the real series, and its value decays fast: within a fortnight the student still remembers what they were thinking at question seventeen, and six weeks later the paper is cold and the conversation goes general. The complication is that the holidays usually sit inside that fortnight, so the booking has to be made in November rather than improvised in January.

Ask the five questions, then hire

If you are looking for an IGCSE maths tutor in Al Manaseer, the useful first step costs nothing: find the specification code on a past paper, email the school for the tier and the mock dates, and then ask any tutor the five questions on this page. Send us the last marked paper and the code, and the free trial opens with diagnosis rather than introductions and ends with a written gap list in your child's own syllabus language. You get the named tutor and their taught cohorts before the lesson. Al Manaseer lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
