IGCSE Home Tutor in Al Zahiyah

Parents searching for an IGCSE home tutor in Al Zahiyah are usually asking a narrower question than the words suggest: is there anybody nearby who actually knows this specification. This page answers that honestly, gives you the questions that separate a specialist from a competent graduate, and explains how IB Gram matches Al Zahiyah households with subject specialists one-to-one over live video.

  • Specification and tier confirmed in writing before a tutor is matched
  • Ten diagnostic questions you can ask any tutor in under ten minutes
  • Coverage limits disclosed, including when nobody is available
  • Free trial lesson first, no card required, nothing renews on its own

IB & IGCSE in Al Zahiyah

The question underneath the search

Al Zahiyah is the district most residents still call the Tourist Club Area: the dense north-eastern corner of Abu Dhabi island, towers and mid-rise blocks packed between Al Salam Street and the Corniche, close to Al Mina and Abu Dhabi Mall. It is one of the most tightly populated parts of the emirate, which means the answer to 'is there a tutor near me' is almost certainly yes. That is not the question parents are really asking.

The real question is whether anybody nearby knows the specification. IGCSE is not one qualification. Cambridge publishes a numbered syllabus for every subject and revises it periodically. Pearson Edexcel publishes its own, with different codes, different paper structures and a different grading scale. Mathematics alone runs as Cambridge 0580, Cambridge International Mathematics 0607 and Pearson 4MA1 across Abu Dhabi schools, and the sciences split again between Cambridge 0620, 0625 and 0610 and the Pearson 4CH1, 4PH1 and 4BI1 equivalents. A tutor who knows the subject but not the specification will teach confidently and miss the things the paper actually rewards.

That gap is invisible from outside, and it is the reason a family can pay for a term of lessons and see no movement in a mock result. The tutor was not bad. The tutor was teaching a different course. Most of this page is therefore about verification: the questions that identify a genuine specialist within ten minutes, the permit position that a parent in Abu Dhabi is entitled to check, and the honest limits of availability for scarcer subjects.

On delivery, the plain statement: IB Gram does not offer home visits in Al Zahiyah, in Abu Dhabi, or anywhere else in the UAE — home visiting is a service we run only in India. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. Independent tutors in the emirate do visit, and the market prices that convenience in a band we set out further down with its sources. What matters for a tower household in Al Zahiyah is that the visiting option is also the one that narrows your choice of tutor to whoever can reach Al Salam Street by five o'clock.

What follows is written to be used rather than admired. There is a table of questions to put to any prospective tutor with the answers a specialist gives and the answers that should worry you. There is a table of who legally needs a tutoring permit in the UAE and how to verify it. There is a coverage table that states which subjects run thin and what we do when nobody is free, because no competitor in this market discloses a coverage limit at all. The final sections deal with the things a tower household in this district actually has to solve: where a quiet forty-five minutes comes from, what the market charges from the cheapest option upwards, and the boundary a legitimate tutor works inside.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Zahiyah's schools and the schools its children travel to cover a wide curriculum spread, and students arrive at IGCSE from several directions. The route in determines which gaps a tutor should expect to find.

LSAges 11-14

Lower Secondary, Years 7 to 9

The years in which the tier decision is quietly made. Schools build an internal picture of a student's algebraic fluency and written accuracy during Year 9 and use it to recommend Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher. Content at this stage looks undemanding beside IGCSE, which disguises how load-bearing it is.

For an Al Zahiyah family, Year 9 is the cheapest year in which to buy tuition and the one most often skipped. A term of weekly work on fluency at that point can change which tier a school offers, and the tier sets the grade ceiling for the following two years. No amount of spending in Year 11 recovers a capped entry.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

Numbered syllabuses examined by terminal written papers, tiered Core and Extended in several subjects. Practical skills in the sciences are examined on paper, through either a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper depending on the centre. Grades run A* to G, with Core capped below the top grades.

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that the correct zone timetable must be used, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after consulting the wrong version. An Al Zahiyah parent should get the timetable from the school's exams officer, not from a tutoring website.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

A parallel family of specifications with its own codes, tiered Foundation and Higher, graded on the nine to one numerical scale. Several subjects supply a formula sheet in the examination. Papers are usually fewer and longer than the Cambridge equivalents, which changes how timing practice should be structured.

Pearson results arrive on their own schedule and the dates are published. November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026, and June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students the following day. For a family planning a resit or an application deadline, those are the dates to work from.

AS, A Level and IB Diploma routes after Year 11

Where the IGCSE tier decision lands. A Levels and the IB Diploma both generally assume the Extended or Higher content behind them, particularly in mathematics and the sciences. Students entered at Core or Foundation find their post-16 options narrowed without any single conversation having told them so.

Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track requires five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at grade E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. Verify the current rules through the official channel.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The specifications below are the ones Abu Dhabi families most often ask about by name, with the syllabus code where it exists. Ask any prospective tutor which of these they have taught and marked; the answer tells you more than a biography does.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core and Extended

Two written papers, one of them without a calculator. Extended adds functions, vectors, harder trigonometry and more demanding algebra. The reliable mark losses are scale factors in similar solids, frequency density, and rounding an intermediate value too early.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Maths A 4MA1

Foundation and Higher

Two two-hour papers of equal weight, calculator permitted throughout, formula sheet supplied. The skill tested is fast and correct formula selection rather than recall, which is a genuinely different revision diet from the Cambridge equivalent.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620

Core and Extended

Moles, ionic equations, electrolysis and organic chemistry. Extended candidates lose most marks on calculation chains and on explanations that describe an observation without naming the particle-level reason for it.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625

Core and Extended

Electricity, waves, mechanics and thermal physics, with the alternative-to-practical paper as the quiet mark sink. Students who have done the experiments still lose marks describing a method precisely enough for somebody else to repeat it.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610

Core and Extended

High terminology load and long structured answers. The highest-yield work is writing answers against mark schemes rather than reading notes, because the marks sit in specific named terms the student either uses or does not.

Cambridge First Language English 0500

Extended

Directed writing, composition and reading response. Marks are lost to unsupported assertion in the reading paper and to unvaried sentence structure in the composition, both of which respond quickly to targeted feedback on the student's own writing.

Cambridge English as a Second Language 0510

Core and Extended

A different specification from First Language English, with its own listening and speaking components. Students placed in the wrong one of the two lose marks for a reason that has nothing to do with their English.

Cambridge IGCSE Economics and Business Studies

Core and Extended

Diagram accuracy and applied evaluation decide the top grades. The common fault is answering with a definition where the command term asked for an analysis of a specific case.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Sciences

Foundation and Higher

The 4CH1, 4PH1 and 4BI1 specifications, examined through their own paper structures. A tutor who has only taught the Cambridge equivalents will teach broadly the right content against the wrong assessment shape.

Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606

Extended only

Optional, sat alongside Extended 0580 by students heading for A Level or Diploma mathematics. Introduces calculus and logarithms early. Students who struggle here are almost always short of algebraic stamina rather than ability.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements cover almost every situation an Al Zahiyah family arrives with. The choice should follow what the marked work shows rather than the budget, since the cheapest format aimed at the wrong problem is the most expensive option available.

Weekly one-to-one, specification-matched

One live video lesson a week with the same tutor, following the specification in the order the school is teaching it, with written work marked between sessions. This is the arrangement that moves a grade across a term, and it is what most families start with after a disappointing report.

  • Same tutor weekly, so the diagnosis carries forward
  • Marked written feedback between lessons
  • Lesson order tracks the school's scheme of work

Verification-first short block

Three to five lessons taken specifically to establish whether the match is right before any longer commitment. Useful for families who have been through an unsuccessful arrangement before and want to test the specification claim rather than take it on trust.

  • Defined number of lessons with no rolling commitment
  • Diagnostic question set first and repeated at the end
  • A written statement of what the tutor found, in plain language

Exam-series intensive

A run of timed past papers in the weeks before a series, marked against the official scheme, with an error log maintained across them. Appropriate when the content is broadly known but marks are leaking through misread commands, early rounding and poor timing.

  • Papers sat to the clock and marked to the published scheme
  • Error log categorised by fault type across papers
  • Scheduled around the school's own mock timetable

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Zahiyah

01

Is there anybody in Al Zahiyah who actually knows this syllabus?

The honest answer has two parts. Yes, there are many capable tutors living within a short drive of Al Zahiyah, and in a district this dense you will find one easily. No, you cannot tell from proximity, a price or a profile photograph whether any of them has taught and marked the specification your child is entered for, and that is the variable that decides whether the money does anything.

The reason this matters more in IGCSE than in most qualifications is the sheer number of parallel specifications in circulation. A single Abu Dhabi year group can contain students sitting Cambridge 0580, Cambridge 0607 and Pearson 4MA1 mathematics, with the Cambridge cohort split again between Core and Extended. Each has different papers, different calculator rules and a different grading scale. A tutor teaching generic IGCSE mathematics is teaching the union of three courses, which means a meaningful share of every lesson is spent on material the student's own paper will not test.

What a specialist does differently is narrow. They ask for the syllabus code before the first lesson. They read the most recent marked script before teaching anything. They know which topics are Extended-only and will not waste a Core candidate's time on them. They mark written work against the published scheme for a real series rather than giving it a tick. And they can tell you, early and specifically, which three faults are costing the most marks.

The tables in the next two sections exist so that you can test all of this yourself, before paying anybody. Neither requires any subject knowledge on your part. The first is a set of questions with the answers a specialist gives; the second is the permit position, which in the UAE is a matter of regulation rather than preference and which almost no tutoring website in this market explains.

02

Ten minutes of questions that identify a genuine IGCSE specialist

You do not need to understand the syllabus to audit a tutor. You need questions with factual answers, because a specialist answers them instantly and anybody else deflects into reassurance. Reassurance is the warning sign. A tutor who responds to a specification question with a statement about how much students enjoy their lessons has told you they do not know the answer.

Run the conversation in this order. Establish the code first, because everything else depends on it. Then the tier, then the paper structure, then the calculator rule, then whether a formula sheet is supplied. Those five facts take ninety seconds for someone who teaches the course and are impossible to improvise. If all five come back correctly, move on to the diagnostic questions: what the student's last marked paper showed, and what the tutor would do in the first three lessons.

The table below sets out the exchange. The middle column is roughly what a specialist says; the third is the kind of answer that should end the conversation. None of this is adversarial and a good tutor will not take it that way — most are relieved to talk to a parent who has asked something specific, because the alternative is being judged on charm.

One further question is worth asking at the end, and the answer matters more than any of the above: what will you tell me if this is not working. A tutor who has an answer to that has thought about accountability. A tutor who says it will definitely work has told you they will not raise it with you when it does not.

03

Is your tutor legally permitted to teach in the UAE?

This is a regulated activity and the rules are published, which makes it one of the few things about hiring a tutor that a parent can check rather than guess. Private tutoring in the Emirates requires a work permit issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 concerning private tuition work permits.

The headline facts are worth knowing precisely. The permit is granted free of charge for two years, so a tutor who tells you it is expensive to obtain is mistaken. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged between fifteen and eighteen. The ministry's own service page for it is listed as private tutor licensing, with no fee and a two working day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No schedule of fine amounts has been published — press reporting states explicitly that the ministry did not specify the amounts or detail the penalties — so any figure quoted to you as the penalty is somebody's guess. In Abu Dhabi there is a further layer: press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules indicates that private and charter school staff may not provide paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and that the permit's code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Verify that against the current ADEK document before relying on the wording.

A tuition centre with premises and staff is a different legal entity from an individual tutor and needs its own permit from the emirate's regulator, which in Dubai is an educational services permit for a training institute issued by KHDA. IB Gram holds no such permit and makes no such claim: we are an independent online matching platform with no UAE office, centre or branch, and no accreditation from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB.

Coverage, match times, and what happens when nobody is free

No competitor in this market publishes a coverage limit, which is strange, because every platform has one. Demand for IGCSE specialists in the Emirates is not spread evenly across subjects, and the thin places are predictable: the less common languages, the combined-science and double-award variants, Computer Science at Extended tier, and anything where a family needs a specific board rather than a broad subject.

Timing compounds it. Nearly every Abu Dhabi household wants the same slot, somewhere between four and seven in the afternoon on Gulf Standard Time, because that is when a child is home and still awake. A specialist with a full book is therefore unavailable in exactly the window you want, even though they have capacity at ten in the morning. The honest response to this is not to quietly substitute a generalist. It is to say so, and to offer the alternatives: a different weekday, a weekend session, or a short wait for a named person.

The table states the position by subject band as it stands. Match times are typical rather than promised, and they lengthen in the weeks before a series as the specialist pool fills. The fallback column is the part worth reading, because it is where other platforms are silent: where no UAE-based specialist covers a combination, we say so and explain what the alternative actually involves before anybody commits.

There is one more disclosure that belongs here. Our tutors are not described as current examiners for Cambridge, Pearson or any other board, because that status cannot be evidenced for individuals in a way a parent could check, and examiner experience should never be used to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or unreleased papers. If a provider leans on examiner language, ask them which board, which subject, which series, and what they are claiming it gives them.

Al Zahiyah logistics: towers, lift time and the real cost of a visit

Density changes the economics of a visiting tutor in a way the hourly rate conceals. Al Zahiyah is apartment living, much of it in towers with basement parking, single-bank lifts and visitor registration at the desk. A tutor arriving for a five o'clock session leaves earlier, parks, waits, signs in and rides up. None of that is teaching and all of it is paid for, either in the rate or in the lesson.

The second constraint is the room. A one-to-one lesson needs a surface, a quiet forty-five minutes and nobody walking through. In a three-bedroom apartment with two other children home from school, that is harder to produce than it sounds, and it is the most common reason a visiting arrangement quietly stops working after a month. A live video lesson has the same problem in miniature but solves it more cheaply: headphones, a closed door, and no second adult in the apartment.

The third is traffic, which in Al Zahiyah is specific rather than general. Al Salam Street and the approaches to Al Mina move slowly in the late afternoon, and anyone driving in from the mainland side of the bridges adds an unpredictable half hour. A tutor who is late twice loses the slot; a tutor who builds the risk into their rate charges for it. Market rates for in-home visiting in the emirate reflect exactly this: survey data puts them at AED 180 to 350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoted between AED 200 and 500.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Al Zahiyah or anywhere in the UAE, because home visiting is an India-only service for us, and the honest version of that argument is the one above. The time a visiting tutor spends in a lift is time you have paid for, and the pool of tutors willing to make that trip to this district is much smaller than the pool who teach the specification.

06

What IGCSE tuition costs in Abu Dhabi, cheapest first

Start at the bottom of the market, because that is where most families start in practice. Budget online tutoring in the UAE is advertised from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, drawn from published platform rate cards read in October 2026. At that level the hour typically goes on checking homework the student has already attempted. It is genuinely useful for confidence and for keeping a student working, and it will not reliably move a grade, because nobody at that price is marking written work against a published scheme between sessions.

The next band up, around AED 150 to 300 an hour on published agency rate pages, is where a qualified subject tutor teaches the specification and marks work between lessons. That is the point at which measurable change becomes plausible, and for most Al Zahiyah families it is the sensible default. Above it, IGCSE and IB specialists are quoted at AED 200 to 450 and more in the Bestimate Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table, and the premium buys judgement rather than hours: which tier, which topics to abandon, which papers to sit. At the top, a premium named tutor has been advertised at AED 650 an hour.

In-home visiting sits across these bands with its own loading. The Bestimate survey puts it at AED 180 to 350, and independent home tutors are quoted from AED 200 to 500. Monthly figures are often more useful than hourly ones for budgeting: that same survey estimates AED 240 to 600 a month for a weekly one-hour session at budget level, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Packages advertised in the market include AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions.

All of those figures belong to the market and were read in October 2026. None of them is IB Gram's price list. Our own arrangement begins with a free trial lesson and a consultation in which the specification, the tier and the diagnosis get established before any schedule is discussed; the condition on the trial is simply that it is one lesson and you decide afterwards. Whether tuition fees carry VAT in the UAE is a question for the Federal Tax Authority rather than for a tutoring page, and we do not state a position on it here.

07

What a tutor may and may not do with assessed IGCSE work

IGCSE has less coursework exposure than the Diploma, but the boundary still exists and it is worth stating to a student in plain terms. A tutor may teach content, model methods, explain what a command term requires, mark a student's own attempt against the published scheme and show them where credit was available and unclaimed. That is the whole legitimate range, and it is enough to move a grade.

A tutor may not supply answers to live assessed work, sit with a student during an assessment, produce coursework for submission, or edit a piece into something the student could not have written. We decline those requests. The reason is not squeamishness: the entry belongs to the student, and work they did not produce puts that entry at risk under the board's regulations. At least one provider competing in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright at a four-figure dirham price. That is not a shortcut, and the consequences land on the child rather than the seller.

A second boundary concerns board material. Specifications, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides are published by Cambridge and Pearson on their own sites. We do not reproduce or distribute them, and a tutor works through them with a student from the official source. Any website offering a downloadable library of current board material is doing something you should not want your child's name attached to.

The third is about what gets promised. No tutor can promise a grade or a grade improvement, and any claim of a guaranteed outcome should be treated with real scepticism. What honest tuition offers is a correct diagnosis, teaching aimed at it, written work marked against the real criteria, and a straight answer about how much of the gap the remaining time can close. A provider who will not say what their plan cannot achieve has told you something important about the plan.

08

Starting from a marked paper rather than from a subject

The most useful document in the house is the last marked script, and most families never send it anywhere. A mock paper marked by the class teacher against the official scheme is a diagnostic record: it shows not just the total, but the exact questions where marks stopped arriving and the pattern behind them. Read properly, three or four recurring faults usually account for most of the lost marks, and at least two of them are technique rather than content.

A worked example makes the point. A student scores fifty-eight on an Extended mathematics paper. Reading the script, nine marks went on questions that said 'show that' and were answered by substituting the printed value back in; six went to answers rounded at an intermediate step; five went to a histogram question where frequency density was never calculated; four went to an unattempted final question the student never reached. That is twenty-four marks, and none of it is a gap in mathematical understanding. The plan writes itself: two lessons on command terms, one on rounding discipline, one on histograms, and timed practice to fix the pacing.

A tutor who starts from the subject instead will begin at the top of the syllabus and work down, which is reassuring, slow and unlikely to find any of the above. This is the difference the verification questions earlier on this page are designed to detect, and it is why the first thing we ask an Al Zahiyah family for is the script rather than a description of the problem.

What follows from that is simply an ordinary weekly arrangement: a specialist matched to the code and tier, a free trial lesson in which the diagnosis is already in hand, a cadence the household can sustain, and a review date at which we look at the marked work rather than at how the lessons felt. Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, scheduled around the Al Zahiyah school run, and timings move during Ramadan to post-Iftar slots where a family prefers it.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Zahiyah

Al Zahiyah households compare notes with families in the districts below, usually because a school, a cousin or a colleague sits there. Delivery over live video removes the distance question entirely, which is why the comparison matters less than it looks.

Al Bateen

The older western side of the island, within reach of several long-established private schools. Families there manage earlier weekday session starts than anyone travelling back from the mainland.

the Corniche

Adjacent to Al Zahiyah and similarly dense. Shortest school runs in the emirate, with sibling collections rather than distance setting the realistic tuition slot.

Al Reem Island

Towers across the bridge with a growing school presence. Lift queues and basement parking make the visiting-tutor hour longer than the clock suggests, which the market price reflects.

Saadiyat Island

Low-density housing and an IB-heavy school profile a short drive north. Saadiyat and Al Zahiyah families frequently want the same specification specialist.

Khalifa City

The principal mainland school cluster. Al Zahiyah children travelling out there are rarely home before half past three, which rules out a four o'clock start on a weekday.

Al Raha Beach

Apartment living along the corridor towards Dubai, feeding the Al Raha and Khalifa City schools and sitting on the same afternoon traffic as Al Zahiyah.

Al Mushrif

Central island, close to some of the emirate's oldest private schools. Students here sit the same syllabus codes on the same zone timetable as students in Al Zahiyah.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A large mainland district where the pool of specialists available in person thins noticeably, which is where the argument for online delivery stops being a preference and becomes arithmetic.

These schools sit within reach of Al Zahiyah and between them run Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE routes. Students we support attend schools in this cluster; the list is context for parents checking which specification applies, not a claim of any relationship.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Confirm the code and tier

Board, syllabus code, tier and paper structure, confirmed with the school's exams officer if you are unsure. Nothing useful can be planned before this, because the three mathematics specifications and two science board families in use across Abu Dhabi lead to different revision diets.

  2. 02

    Send the last marked script

The most recent marked mock or internal assessment, scanned. A specialist reads it question by question and categorises every lost mark as content, method, technique or misread command, which is a faster and more accurate diagnosis than any conversation about it.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, diagnosis already done

One live video lesson with the matched tutor, who arrives having read the script. You decide afterwards whether to continue. No card is required at this stage and nothing starts automatically if you choose not to take it further.

  4. 04

Set a cadence and a review date

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The code is matched before the tutor is

A tutor who has taught Extended 0580 is not interchangeable with one who has taught Higher 4MA1 or Cambridge 0607. We establish the specification first, which removes the single most common reason a term of tuition produces no measurable change.

You can audit us with the same questions

The questions in the table on this page work on any provider, including this one. Ask us which code, which papers, which calculator rule and what the marked script showed. A platform that publishes the audit expects to pass it.

Coverage limits are disclosed

Where a subject or a time slot is thin, we say so and name the alternatives, rather than filling the slot with a generalist. No competitor in this market publishes a coverage limit, which does not mean none of them has one.

Live video, stated plainly

Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Al Zahiyah or anywhere in the UAE, because home visiting is an India-only service, and we put that on the page rather than in a footnote.

The permit position, explained not implied

We explain what the MoHRE private tuition permit is, who needs one and how to check it, and we claim no accreditation from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education or any examination board. Naming a regulator is not the same as being endorsed by one.

Figures with sources and dates

Every AED band on this page is attributed to a published market source and dated October 2026. Nothing here is our price list, and no statistic appears without a date and a source behind it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Zahiyah: your questions answered

Will an IGCSE tutor come to our apartment in Al Zahiyah?+

Not through IB Gram. We deliver one-to-one IGCSE tuition over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and we do not offer home visits in Al Zahiyah, elsewhere in Abu Dhabi, or anywhere in the UAE, because home visiting is a service we run only in India. Independent tutors in the emirate do visit, and the market prices that at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour depending on the source. In a tower district the premium largely buys parking, lift time and traffic risk rather than teaching.

How do I tell whether a tutor really knows my child's syllabus?+

Ask five factual questions in this order: which syllabus code, which tier, how many papers, whether a calculator is permitted on all of them, and whether a formula sheet is supplied. A specialist answers all five in about ninety seconds. Anyone who deflects into general reassurance about enjoyment or confidence has answered the question a different way. Then ask what your child's last marked paper showed; the right response is a request to read it before offering any diagnosis.

Which IGCSE specifications are actually used in Abu Dhabi schools?+

Several in parallel, which is the root of most confusion. Mathematics appears as Cambridge 0580, Cambridge International Mathematics 0607 and Pearson Edexcel 4MA1. Sciences split between the Cambridge 0620, 0625 and 0610 family and the Pearson 4CH1, 4PH1 and 4BI1 family. English divides between First Language 0500 and English as a Second Language 0510, which are different qualifications. Your school's exams officer can confirm the exact codes in one email, and that email is worth more than any tutoring brochure.

Does a private tutor in Al Zahiyah need a licence?+

A permit, yes. Private tutoring in the UAE requires a work permit issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and the ministry's service page lists no fee and a two working day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without one brings fines and penalties under the applicable laws.

How much is the fine for tutoring in the UAE without a permit?+

No amount has been published, so nobody can tell you honestly. The official position is that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from the ministry are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. Press reporting states explicitly that the ministry did not specify the fine amounts or detail the penalties, and a figure circulating online could not be verified against any official source. Any website quoting you a specific dirham penalty is guessing, which is a reason to distrust the rest of its claims.

Can my child's class teacher tutor them privately in Abu Dhabi?+

Treat that as closed. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff indicates teachers are prohibited from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and that staff tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. Verify the current ADEK policy document before relying on the exact wording, but the practical advice is simple: use an independent specialist instead.

What does the cheapest tuition in Abu Dhabi actually get you?+

Budget online tutoring is advertised from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour on published platform rate cards read in October 2026. At that level the hour usually goes on reviewing homework the student has already attempted, which supports confidence and routine. What it does not include is written work marked against a published mark scheme between sessions, and that marking is the mechanism by which a grade actually moves. It is a reasonable purchase for a student who is coping and needs company, not for one who is losing marks.

Which exam series can an Al Zahiyah IGCSE candidate sit?+

Cambridge runs its IGCSE examinations in a June series and a November series, and those are the two open to UAE candidates; the February/March series is offered in India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November each year. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states that the correct zone timetable must be used, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam through using the wrong version. Get the timetable from your school, not from a website.

When do Pearson International GCSE results actually arrive?+

On a published schedule that differs from Cambridge's. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, while November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Those dates matter for anyone planning a resit or an application deadline. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables well ahead of each series, so the live official PDF is the only source worth relying on.

What if no specialist covers my child's subject in our preferred slot?+

We tell you rather than substituting someone close enough. Almost every Abu Dhabi family wants the same late-afternoon window on Gulf Standard Time, so a specialist with a full book may have capacity in the morning and none when you need it. The options are usually a different weekday, a weekend session, or a short wait for a named tutor. Where no UAE-based specialist covers the combination at all, we say so plainly and explain what the realistic alternative involves before you commit.

Is it worth starting IGCSE tuition in Year 9 rather than Year 11?+

Usually yes, and it is the least popular advice on this page. Year 9 is when a school forms its view of whether Core or Extended is right, and a term of work on algebraic fluency at that stage can change the tier offered. The tier sets the grade ceiling for two years. The same money spent in the final term before the papers buys exam technique, which is worth having and genuinely effective, but it cannot recover a capped entry once the school has submitted it.

Can a tutor help with my child's IGCSE coursework?+

Within a boundary we state to the student at the first session. A tutor teaches content, models methods, explains what a command term requires and marks the student's own attempts against the published scheme. A tutor does not supply answers for live assessed work, sit alongside a student during an assessment, or produce coursework for submission. We decline that because the entry belongs to your child and work they did not produce puts it at risk under the board's regulations.

Do you provide past papers and mark schemes for us to download?+

No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Specifications, past papers, mark schemes, subject guides and grade-boundary tables are published by Cambridge and Pearson on their own websites, and reproducing or distributing them is a copyright matter. A tutor works through them with your child from the official source, which is also the only way to be sure the version in use is current. Boards revise specifications, and a downloaded copy from an unofficial library may be two syllabuses out of date.

How quickly should we see something change after starting in Al Zahiyah?+

That depends on the diagnosis, and a provider who answers with a number before reading the script is guessing. Procedural faults such as early rounding, frequency density or mishandled command terms often return marks within three or four lessons because each is a single rule plus practice. Conceptual gaps take several weeks of teaching. Underlying fluency problems take a term or more. No tutor can promise a grade, and the review date exists precisely so that an honest answer gets given at a fixed point rather than avoided.

Audit the tutor before you pay for the term

Take the question table on this page to whoever you are considering, including us. Five factual questions about the specification separate a specialist from a competent graduate in about ninety seconds, and the sixth — what will you tell me if this is not working — separates the accountable from the optimistic. Then send the last marked script and let a specialist read it before the trial lesson. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, scheduled around the Al Zahiyah school run, and we do not offer home visits in the UAE because that is an India-only service. The trial is one lesson, and you decide afterwards.
