IGCSE Maths Tutor in Al Maryah Island

Before you pay for an IGCSE maths tutor in Al Maryah Island, it is worth knowing what the free and near-free options give you, and at what point money starts buying marks. This page runs the order properly: the school's own provision first, then past papers, then a short targeted block, then weekly one-to-one, with the published AED bands for each. IB Gram teaches Al Maryah Island students live over video, one to one, so the fee buys a specialist's hour rather than a drive across the Reem bridge.

  • The free options named first, before any paid one
  • Every AED band attributed to whoever published it
  • Board-correct from session one: 0580 or 4MA1
  • No UAE home visits — live one-to-one video only

IB & IGCSE in Al Maryah Island

Spend the free options first, then spend money on something narrow

Most pages about IGCSE maths tutoring begin by explaining why you need it. This one begins by listing what you should use before you pay anyone, because on Al Maryah Island the families who get most from tutoring are the ones who arrive at it last rather than first.

The order runs like this. The school's own revision provision, which you are already paying for through fees and which most students use inconsistently or not at all. Then past papers from the correct board, worked under timing and marked honestly against the real mark scheme — this is free, it is the single most diagnostic thing available, and it is skipped more often than anything else. Then a short block of targeted sessions on the two or three topics those papers expose. Only then a weekly one-to-one arrangement, and only if the pattern justifies it.

The reason to run it in that order is that the paid product is narrow and the free products are broad. A tutor's hour is worth a great deal when it is aimed at a named error on a named topic, and very little when it is spent covering the syllabus, which the school is already doing and which a past paper will tell you about for nothing. Families who reverse the order pay specialist rates for homework supervision, which is the commonest waste in this market.

When money does come in, here is what it costs. Published market rates in Abu Dhabi, read in October 2026, put budget online tutoring at AED 45 to 150 an hour, a qualified subject tutor online at AED 150 to 300, an in-home visit at AED 180 to 500 with the journey inside the rate, and a named IGCSE or A-Level specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for weekly one-hour sessions come out at AED 240 to 600 a month at the budget end and AED 600 to 1,200 in the mid range.

The in-home premium deserves naming on this island specifically. Al Maryah Island is roughly half a square kilometre of towers with no school inside it and few resident tutors, so an in-home match travels from the mainland across a bridge at the worst hour of the day. The gap between the online and in-home bands is money paid for driving. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE — that is an India-only service — so for us the gap does not exist.

What follows is the maths-specific detail: which syllabus code your child is actually sitting, what the tier decision costs downstream, the four topics that eat most of the marks, how the calculator and non-calculator papers differ, and the arithmetic of a November resit. Each section is written so you can price a quote against it.

At a glance

  • Use the school's revision provision and past papers before paying anyone
  • Published rates: AED 150–300 online qualified, AED 180–500 in-home
  • Monthly, mid-range weekly sessions run roughly AED 600–1,200
  • Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are not interchangeable for revision
  • A capped tier entry costs more in Year 12 than tutoring would have in Year 10
  • IB Gram teaches Al Maryah Island students online only, one tutor to one student

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics

Cambridge's main IGCSE maths syllabus, code 0580, covering number, algebra, coordinate geometry, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, vectors and transformations, probability and statistics. It is tiered: a Core route with a reduced syllabus and a capped grade range, and an Extended route carrying the full content and the full grade range. The papers include both non-calculator and calculator components.

Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series. The February and March series is offered to India only and is not available to a candidate sitting in Abu Dhabi. Cambridge also allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and warns it is essential to use the correct timetable for your zone, stating it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Confirm the current paper pattern for your child's exam year through the school.

4MA1Ages 14–16 · Years 10–11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

Pearson's main international GCSE maths qualification, code 4MA1, tiered as Foundation and Higher. Content overlaps substantially with Cambridge 0580 but the papers, the phrasing of questions and the mark schemes differ, and the calculator policy across the papers is not the same. Pearson also publishes further maths and additional maths qualifications taken by stronger cohorts.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE is available in May/June and in November. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series and revises them, so open the live official timetable rather than trusting a restated date.

Additional and further maths options

Some schools enter stronger students for an additional or further maths qualification alongside the main IGCSE, covering material that overlaps with early AS content: more advanced algebra, series, calculus foundations and trigonometric identities. It is a bridge into A Level or Higher Level maths rather than a separate track.

Tutoring here is usually short and cheap because the student is already secure in the underlying IGCSE content. A handful of sessions on the genuinely new material is better value than a weekly arrangement, and it has the useful side effect of making the sixth-form maths choice easier to evidence when the school is deciding on places.

POST16Ages 16–19 · Years 12–13

Where the maths grade leads

The IGCSE maths grade gates the sixth-form maths choice more tightly than any other subject. A Level Mathematics and IB Higher Level maths courses normally require an Extended or Higher tier grade at a decent level, and schools set their own thresholds. A Core or Foundation entry can close those doors before anyone has discussed sixth form.

Several schools Al Maryah Island families use run both A Level and IB Diploma sixth forms, so the Year 11 maths grade is a genuine fork. This is why the tier decision is the highest-value place to put a small amount of tutoring money, and why spending in Year 10 beats spending in Year 11.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the parts of IGCSE maths that absorb tutoring budget, with what each one actually costs in marks. Both boards and both tiers are covered.

Algebraic manipulation

Core and Extended; Foundation and Higher

Expanding, factorising, rearranging and solving. The single largest source of lost marks at Extended and Higher tier, because almost every multi-step question routes through it and an early slip propagates through the whole answer.

Number and non-calculator arithmetic

Core and Extended

Fractions, percentages, ratio, standard form, bounds and estimation. Where a non-calculator paper is sat, this is where marks are quietly thrown away by students who are entirely capable of the mathematics.

Trigonometry and bearings

Mainly Extended and Higher

Right-angled and non-right-angled triangles, sine and cosine rules, bearings and three-dimensional problems. Bearings questions are reliably mishandled because students do not draw the diagram before calculating.

Geometry and mensuration

Core and Extended

Angle reasoning, circle theorems, surface area and volume of compound shapes. Compound-shape questions carry several method marks that are lost when working is not laid out in identifiable steps.

Graphs and functions

Core and Extended

Straight lines, quadratics, reciprocal and exponential graphs, transformations and, at the higher tiers, function notation. Marks go on reading values off a graph without showing the construction lines the mark scheme expects.

Probability and statistics

Core and Extended

Averages from tables, cumulative frequency, histograms, tree diagrams and conditional probability. Histograms with unequal class widths are a predictable loss, and tree diagrams are usually drawn correctly then read wrongly.

Vectors and transformations

Mainly Extended and Higher

Column vectors, vector geometry, translations, rotations, reflections and enlargements including negative scale factors. A small topic that appears every series and that students under-practise relative to its reliability.

Multi-step problem solving

Extended and Higher especially

Questions that combine two or three topics with no signposting. These separate the top grades, and the skill is planning the route before calculating rather than any individual technique.

Calculator technique

Both boards, both tiers

Mode settings, fraction and surd entry, statistical functions, and recording enough working that a correct display earns full credit. One session here regularly returns more marks than a topic re-teach, and nobody charges for it because it is unglamorous.

Working presentation for the mark scheme

Both boards, both tiers

Writing the steps a marker needs to see. Students who do three steps mentally and write one line lose method marks they had earned. It is a habit, it takes about three weeks of insistence, and it is free marks.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy IGCSE maths help, in ascending order of cost, all delivered live over video to Al Maryah Island.

A single diagnostic session

One session built on a past paper your child has already sat under timing. The output is a written list of the specific repeating errors and the two or three topics worth paying for. Some families stop there, take the list to the school and spend nothing further, which is a legitimate outcome.

  • Worked on a real marked script, not a textbook
  • Produces a named error list you can act on alone
  • No commitment to anything beyond the hour

A targeted topic block

Four to six sessions on the named weaknesses the diagnosis found: algebraic manipulation, trigonometry and bearings, histograms, whatever the papers actually showed. It has a start, an end and a testable outcome, which is why it costs less per grade point moved than any open-ended arrangement.

  • A defined topic list and a defined session count
  • Ends with a timed question set on the same topics
  • No rolling commitment once the block closes

Weekly one-to-one through the year

A fixed slot with the same tutor across Year 10 or Year 11, working a week ahead of the school's scheme. The largest commitment and the one that actually changes a grade rather than rescuing a test. Worth it when the gap is broad; overkill when it is four nameable errors.

  • Same tutor and slot, board and tier specific
  • Planned against the school's own assessment calendar
  • Reviewed against each marked assessment, not by feel

01

What IGCSE maths help costs, starting from zero

Put the options in price order and the decision becomes much easier. At zero cost there is the school's own revision provision, which is already funded through fees and which a surprising number of students use patchily. Also at zero cost there are past papers from the correct board, available through the school's exams officer, which when sat under timing and marked honestly tell you more about where the marks are going than any conversation with a tutor will.

Above that sit the paid options, and the published market bands for Abu Dhabi read in October 2026 are these. Budget online tutoring, typically a university student, runs AED 45 to 150 an hour. A qualified subject tutor working online runs AED 150 to 300. An in-home one-to-one visit runs AED 180 to 500 with the journey inside the fee. A named IGCSE or A-Level specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above. Premium examiner-led provision reaches AED 650 at the top of this market.

What changes between those bands is not enthusiasm. It is whether the person can look at a marked 0580 or 4MA1 script and name the four things costing marks, and then teach against them. A budget tutor will help a student complete homework correctly. A subject specialist will tell you that the real problem is three steps done mentally on every algebra question and a calculator in the wrong angle mode. Those are different products and they are priced accordingly.

IB Gram publishes no hourly figure on this page. We offer a free trial lesson and a consultation, and the number follows once the board, the tier and the frequency are known. The table below is the market, not us.

0580 or 4MA1: the code decides what the money buys

A maths tutor is only worth a specialist rate if they are teaching the right qualification. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is syllabus 0580. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A is 4MA1. They cover overlapping content with different papers, different tiering language, different question phrasing and different mark schemes, and the calculator policy across the papers is not the same.

Ask the school for the code rather than the subject name. It takes one email and it removes all ambiguity. Then give the code to any tutor you speak to. If they ask which tier and which paper pattern applies to your child's exam year, they know the qualification. If they say "IGCSE maths is IGCSE maths", you have learned something useful for AED 0.

The tiering language differs too, and it confuses families comparing providers. Cambridge 0580 is Core and Extended. Pearson 4MA1 is Foundation and Higher. They are not identical in content or in grade ceiling, so a tutor who talks about Foundation when your child is entered for Cambridge Core is working from the wrong map.

One operational point with real consequences, especially for private candidates. Cambridge allocates every exam centre to one of six administrative zones, states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and says it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong timetable. If your child is entered through the school that is the school's job. If they are a private candidate it is yours.

The tier decision is the most expensive thing nobody charges for

In maths, more than any other IGCSE subject, the tier your child is entered for sets a ceiling. A Core or Foundation entry limits the available grade. An Extended or Higher entry does not, but it puts harder algebra, trigonometry and problem solving in front of a student who may not be ready, with a genuine risk of a worse result than a secure lower-tier entry would have produced.

The cost appears later. A Level Mathematics and IB Higher Level maths courses normally require an Extended or Higher grade at a reasonable level, and sixth forms set their own thresholds. A student capped in Year 10 can find a door closed in Year 11 by a decision taken eighteen months earlier, and reopening it means a resit series, another year's planning, and sometimes a different sixth form.

This is where a small amount of money does the most work. Four to six sessions in Year 10, aimed squarely at the algebra, trigonometry and multi-step problem solving that separate the tiers, is a defined cost protecting an expensive decision. The same spend in Year 11 on general revision buys much less, because the entry is already made.

Ask the department two questions: which tier is my child provisionally entered for, and what specifically would have to improve for the other tier to be viable. Any maths department will answer both, and the second answer is a precise tutoring brief that costs nothing to obtain.

The four things that eat most IGCSE maths marks

  • Invisible working: the largest loss, fixable in about three weeks
  • Algebraic manipulation: one slip costs a whole question, so drill little and often
  • No diagram: bearings, 3D trigonometry and circle theorems all punish this
  • Calculator discipline: the cheapest session on the menu, rarely sold

Across marked scripts from both boards, the losses concentrate. The biggest is working that the marker cannot see. A student performs three steps mentally, writes a single line, arrives at the right answer, and collects a fraction of the method marks the question offered. This is not a knowledge problem and it is not expensive to fix: roughly three weeks of a tutor refusing to accept unshown steps changes it permanently. Families paying for topic re-teaching while this habit persists are paying for the wrong thing.

The second is algebraic manipulation under pressure. Almost every multi-step question at Extended or Higher tier routes through a rearrangement, and an error there propagates into everything after it, so one slip costs a whole question rather than a mark. Fluency here is drilled rather than understood, and it responds to short, frequent practice better than to long sessions.

The third is the diagram. Bearings, 3D trigonometry, circle theorems and compound-shape mensuration are all routinely attempted without drawing or annotating anything, and all are routinely lost for exactly that reason. The instruction is almost absurdly simple — draw it, label it, then calculate — and it recovers marks immediately.

The fourth is the calculator: unset angle modes, fraction entry producing decimals, statistical functions used without recording the inputs, and correct displayed answers written down with nothing to support them. A single session on calculator discipline often returns more marks than a topic block. It is the cheapest item on any maths tutoring menu and the one least likely to be offered to you, because it does not sound like teaching.

05

Calculator and non-calculator papers are different skills

Families treat maths revision as one activity, and the papers do not. Where a non-calculator component is sat, it examines arithmetic fluency, surd and fraction handling, estimation and mental method, and a student who has revised exclusively with a calculator to hand will be slower and less accurate on it than their topic knowledge predicts. Where a calculator is allowed, the examination shifts towards efficient use of the machine and towards recording enough working that a correct display earns full credit.

The revision implication is that the two need separating. A week of non-calculator practice, deliberately done without the machine on the desk, builds something a week of mixed practice does not. Equally, a session spent entirely on calculator technique — modes, fraction entry, statistical functions, how much working to show alongside a display — is not a waste of a specialist hour, it is one of the highest-return hours available.

Paper patterns differ between the boards and are revised by them, so the only safe source is the syllabus or specification for your child's actual exam year, obtained through the school. What is stable is the principle: find out which of your child's papers permit a calculator and which do not, and make sure the revision for each looks different.

This is also where a cheap tutor and an expensive one diverge most visibly. Asked to improve a non-calculator score, a budget tutor will set more questions. A specialist will set fewer questions, remove the calculator from the room, and work on method and estimation.

06

Price per grade point: where maths money goes furthest

  • Cheapest grade movement: presentation, calculator discipline, diagram habit
  • Then a four-to-six session block on named topics from a marked script
  • Then Year 10 tier protection — small cost, large downstream saving
  • Worst value: an open-ended weekly hour bought without a diagnosis

Hourly rate is a poor way to compare tutoring purchases. A better one is how much it costs to move the grade, and on that measure the ranking is consistent and slightly counter-intuitive. The cheapest grade movement comes from the unglamorous items: working presentation, calculator discipline, and a diagram habit. Two or three sessions, a visible change on the next marked paper.

Next cheapest is a targeted topic block of four to six sessions aimed at named weaknesses from a real script. It is defined, testable and finite. After that comes a tier-protection block in Year 10, which is cheap in itself and prevents a very expensive downstream problem. Weekly one-to-one across a year is the most expensive option and the right one when the gap is genuinely broad rather than specific.

The worst value in this market is a weekly open-ended hour with no diagnosis behind it, bought at a specialist rate and spent on whatever homework is due. It is also the single most commonly purchased product, because it is the easiest to sell and the easiest to agree to. A family that insists on a diagnosis first and a named topic list second will spend less and get more, whichever provider they use.

An honest note on what tutoring cannot buy: it cannot guarantee a grade, it is not required for Ministry of Education equivalency or for university admission, and no provider should suggest otherwise. What it buys is hours of specialist attention on identified weaknesses, and it should be budgeted and reviewed as the finite purchase it is.

07

Resit economics: when November is worth it

A maths grade below what the sixth form requires raises a resit question, and it is a financial decision as much as an academic one. For a Cambridge candidate the resit route is the November series, since the February and March series is offered to India only and is not available in Abu Dhabi. For a Pearson candidate November is also available, alongside the May/June window.

The costs are three. The entry fee, which is set by the board and administered through a centre and which you should price before deciding. The tutoring, which for a resit should be short and targeted rather than a full re-teach, because the student has already covered the syllabus once. And the time cost, which families underestimate: a November resit runs through the first term of sixth form, competing with new courses at exactly the point a student needs to establish themselves.

The timings are knowable. Pearson's published history shows a November window running from late October to mid-November and results reaching students the following January — November 2025 results landed on 22 January 2026. That means a resit grade arrives part-way through the sixth-form year, which is useful for a conditional place and not useful for an application already decided.

Weigh it accordingly. A resit is worth it when a specific, named threshold is missed by a small margin and a defined block of work can close it. It is poor value when the gap is broad, when the student is already stretched by new courses, or when the receiving school has indicated it will take the original grade anyway. Ask the sixth form directly before spending anything.

Why there is no in-home option here, and what replaces it

  • No UAE home visits — in-home tutoring is an India-only service
  • The online-to-in-home gap in this market is roughly AED 30–200 per hour
  • A shared whiteboard retains working between sessions; a notebook does not
  • Selection happens on syllabus code and tier rather than on driving distance

Stated plainly, because this page targets a local maths-tutor search: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. No tutor will travel to an Al Maryah Island address. In-home tutoring is a service we run in India only. Every UAE lesson is live one-to-one video with a subject specialist, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time.

The honest case for that is a cost case, which suits this page. On an island with no school inside it and few resident maths specialists, an in-home match comes from the mainland. The published gap between the online and in-home bands in this market is roughly AED 30 to 200 an hour, and on this island that gap pays for a journey across a bridge at the hour the roads are worst. Across a school year of weekly sessions that is a substantial sum spent on driving rather than on teaching.

What replaces it, for maths specifically, is not a compromise. A shared digital whiteboard keeps every worked line, so last week's quadratic can be reopened rather than reconstructed from a notebook. The exact past-paper question can be pasted onto the board. The student works on their own paper, in their own handwriting, with a camera on it — which is precisely what the exam will ask of them. The one requirement is that camera, and we set it up in the first session.

The practical gain is selection. Instead of asking who can reach the island by five o'clock, we ask who teaches 0580 Extended or 4MA1 Higher and can read a marked script. On Al Maryah Island that reordering is the whole of the advantage.

Where we tutor

Al Maryah Island and the cost of the journey around it

An in-home maths rate is a teaching rate with a journey folded in. These are the communities around Al Maryah Island, with the journey each implies — the line of the fee that never appears itemised.

Al Maryah Island

A central business district of towers with no school inside it, and few resident maths specialists. Any in-home tutor here is travelling in, and that travel is inside whatever hourly figure you are quoted.

Al Reem Island

One bridge away, the shortest journey of any neighbouring community, and where tutors advertising on Al Maryah Island most often actually live.

Al Bateen

Mainland Abu Dhabi with established schools. Twenty to thirty minutes, unpredictable from mid-afternoon, which is when a Year 11 maths session needs to begin.

the Corniche

The waterfront facing the island: short in distance, slow at pickup, and a frequent source of the late arrival that still bills a full hour.

Saadiyat Island

Low-density housing with a small number of international schools. Families here often conclude the in-home premium is not worth a term of shortened sessions.

Khalifa City

The emirate's densest school cluster and the main source of resident tutors. Thirty-five to fifty minutes each way, which is well over an hour of driving inside a one-hour fee.

Al Reef

Affordable villas and apartments near the airport, popular with school staff, and therefore a real part of the emirate's tutor supply at a considerable distance from this island.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Dense mainland grid with a large IGCSE cohort and plentiful tutors. The longest realistic in-home journey to Al Maryah Island, and the most expensive in travel terms.

Al Raha Beach

Waterfront apartments and townhouses towards the airport. A common relocation choice as children reach Year 10, and a useful comparison when pricing the same maths tutoring at two addresses.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Maryah Island

The central islands

The school belt most Al Maryah Island families use, one bridge away, running British pathways into IGCSE maths and in several cases an IB or A Level sixth form. That sixth-form fork is what makes the Year 11 maths tier decision financially consequential.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the syllabus code and the tier from the school

0580 or 4MA1, Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher. One email, no cost, and it determines whether any tutor you speak to is working from the right map. A tutor who does not ask for it is not selling you specificity.

  2. 02

Sit a past paper under timing first

Free, and more diagnostic than any conversation. Mark it honestly against the real mark scheme. Bring the script rather than a description of the problem, because the script is where the repeating errors are visible.

  3. 03

Take the free trial as a diagnostic

The hour is spent on that marked script. The output is a named list of the repeating errors and the two or three topics worth paying for. Some families take the list to the school and stop there, and that is a legitimate result.

Buy a block, not an open commitment

Four to six sessions on the named topics, a weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, and a named assessment to review against. Sessions shift post-Iftar during Ramadan and pause across school exam weeks.

Review, then decide whether to continue

If the error pattern has moved, close the block or extend it deliberately. If it has not, we change the approach or the tutor rather than selling more hours. That review point is what keeps a maths budget finite.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The free options listed before the paid ones

School revision provision and timed past papers come first on this page because they come first in practice. A tutor's hour is worth most when it is aimed at something a free past paper has already identified.

Market rates published with their sources

Every AED band here is another provider's figure or Bestimate's 2026 rate table, read in October 2026. Three of the competitor pages researched for this market publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars.

Board and tier specific from session one

We ask for the syllabus code and tier before proposing a tutor, because Cambridge 0580 Core and Pearson 4MA1 Higher are different products with different mark schemes and different calculator policies.

Diagnosis before a topic plan

The first hour works on your child's own marked script and produces a named error list. Most maths problems are four nameable habits, and three of them cost nothing but insistence to fix.

Blocks with an end point

Defined session counts against named topics, reviewed on the next marked assessment. Open-ended weekly hours bought without a diagnosis are the worst value in this market and the easiest thing to sell.

No guarantees and no claimed approvals

We do not promise a grade, we do not claim ADEK, KHDA, Cambridge or Pearson approval or partnership, we run no UAE office, and we publish no self-generated statistics. Tutoring is also not required for equivalency or admission.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Maryah Island: your questions answered

What is the cheapest useful way to improve IGCSE maths on Al Maryah Island?+

Two things that cost nothing. Use the school's own revision provision properly, since it is already funded through fees and most students use it patchily. Then sit a past paper from the correct board under exam timing and mark it honestly against the real mark scheme. That single exercise identifies where marks are going more precisely than any conversation with a tutor. Only after that does paid help become efficient, because you now know what to buy. Families who reverse this order pay specialist rates for homework supervision, which is the commonest waste in this market.

How much does an IGCSE maths tutor cost in Abu Dhabi in AED?+

Published market figures read in October 2026: budget online tutoring at AED 45 to 150 an hour, a qualified subject tutor online at AED 150 to 300, an in-home one-to-one visit at AED 180 to 500 with the journey inside the rate, and a named IGCSE or A-Level specialist at AED 200 to 450 and above, reaching AED 650 for premium examiner-led provision. On a monthly basis Bestimate's 2026 estimates give AED 240 to 600 for budget weekly sessions and AED 600 to 1,200 mid-range. Those are the market's numbers; ours follow a free trial and a consultation.

Why is an in-home maths rate higher than an online one on this island?+

Because you are buying a journey as well as an hour. Al Maryah Island is roughly half a square kilometre of towers with no school inside it and few resident maths specialists, so an in-home match travels from the mainland across a bridge at the busiest part of the afternoon. The published gap between the bands is roughly AED 30 to 200 an hour, which across a school year of weekly sessions is a substantial sum spent on driving. IB Gram offers no home visits in the UAE at all, so the gap does not arise for us.

Which maths syllabus code is my child sitting, and why does the code matter?+

Ask the school: Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics is 0580 and Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A is 4MA1. The content overlaps but the papers, tier names, command terms, mark schemes and calculator policies differ. Cambridge tiers as Core and Extended; Pearson as Foundation and Higher. A tutor drilling the wrong board's past papers is teaching useful mathematics and wasting the specificity a specialist rate is supposed to buy. Give the code to anyone you speak to; whether they ask about the tier and paper pattern tells you a lot for nothing.

Is the Core or Foundation entry going to cost us money later?+

Potentially a great deal. A lower-tier maths entry caps the available grade, and A Level Mathematics and IB Higher Level maths courses normally require an Extended or Higher grade at a reasonable level, with each sixth form setting its own threshold. A student capped in Year 10 can find a door closed in Year 11 by a decision made eighteen months earlier, and reopening it means a resit series and another year of planning. Four to six sessions in Year 10 aimed at the content separating the tiers is the cheapest insurance available in this subject.

Which single maths fix gives the fastest visible return?+

Making the working visible. Students routinely do three steps mentally, write one line, reach the right answer and collect a fraction of the method marks available. It is a habit rather than a knowledge gap, roughly three weeks of a tutor refusing to accept unshown steps changes it permanently, and the gain appears on the very next marked paper. Close behind it is one session on calculator discipline — angle modes, fraction entry, statistical functions, and recording enough alongside a display to earn full credit. Neither is impressive to advertise, which is why neither gets offered.

How should revision differ between a calculator and a non-calculator paper?+

They examine different skills, so they need separating. A non-calculator component rewards arithmetic fluency, fraction and surd handling, estimation and mental method, and a student who has only ever revised with the machine on the desk will underperform their topic knowledge. A calculator component rewards efficient machine use plus enough recorded working to support the display. Practise each in its own sessions, with the calculator deliberately removed or deliberately foregrounded. Paper patterns are revised by the boards, so confirm which of your child's papers permit a calculator through the school.

Do you hand over past papers and mark schemes with the fee?+

No. We reference them and point to the official source. Board syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are copyrighted material belonging to Cambridge or Pearson, and bundling scanned copies into a tutoring package is redistributing somebody else's property rather than adding value for you. Papers come through your school's exams officer or the board. What a tutor adds is not the paper but the marking of your child's attempt at it against the real rubric, and the naming of what went wrong, which a downloaded folder cannot do.

Is a November resit in maths worth the money?+

It depends on the size of the gap and on a question you can ask for free. For Cambridge candidates November is the resit route, since the February and March series is India-only and unavailable in Abu Dhabi; Pearson offers November too. Price three things: the entry fee from your centre, a short targeted tutoring block rather than a full re-teach, and the time cost of revising through the first sixth-form term. Pearson's history shows November results reaching students the following January. Before any of that, ask the receiving sixth form whether they will accept the original grade.

How many sessions does a maths topic block normally take?+

Four to six for a named weakness, which is enough to teach the method, drill it, and test it under timing without the arrangement drifting into open-ended supervision. Algebraic manipulation sometimes needs more because it is fluency rather than knowledge and responds to short frequent practice. Calculator discipline and working presentation need one or two. The important feature is not the number but the endpoint: a block has a defined topic list, a defined session count and a named assessment to review against, which is what stops a maths budget becoming a subscription.

Should we fund maths and another subject at the same time?+

Rarely, and maths is usually the one to fund. It gates the sixth-form choice more tightly than any other IGCSE subject, so a grade there has consequences a science grade may not. Funding two subjects weekly roughly doubles the monthly figure and splits the student's attention in the term they can least afford it, which tends to produce two small nudges rather than one changed grade. The exception is a genuine emergency where two subjects are both at risk of closing a specific door. Otherwise take maths properly and reassess with the next marked assessment.

Which maths topics should we actually pay someone to teach?+

The ones a marked script shows, which in practice cluster. Algebraic manipulation, because almost every multi-step question at the higher tiers routes through it and one slip loses a whole question. Trigonometry and bearings, because they are attempted without diagrams and lost for that reason. Histograms with unequal class widths and conditional probability, because they recur every series and are under-practised. And multi-step problem solving at the top of the higher tier, where the skill is planning a route rather than any single technique. Everything else, the school is already covering.

Can a tutor guarantee my child a particular IGCSE maths grade?+

No, and a provider offering one is telling you something about themselves rather than about your child. What tutoring buys is hours of specialist attention aimed at identified weaknesses, and the outcome depends on the student's work between sessions, the starting point, the tier they are entered for and the paper on the day. We publish no grade guarantees, no success percentages and no self-generated statistics, because we could not evidence them with a sample size, a date and a method. Review the spend against the next marked assessment instead; that is a real measure.

Do private maths tutors in Abu Dhabi need a permit, and does it cost them?+

Yes to the permit, no to the cost. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued through MoHRE, and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Applications go through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and since no fine schedule is published you should distrust any figure quoted at you.

What should we send before a free IGCSE maths trial on Al Maryah Island?+

The syllabus code and tier, so the tutor is board-correct from the first minute. The last two marked maths assessments with the teacher's comments, ideally including a past paper sat under timing. And the time your child is actually home, since a commute from Al Reem is twenty minutes and one from the mainland can be fifty, which decides which slots are real. With those three, the trial hour works on evidence and you can ask the tutor at the end to name the four errors they found and what each one costs.

Will anyone come to our Al Maryah Island address for the maths lessons?+

No. IB Gram runs no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. Lessons are live one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time. For maths specifically the format holds up well provided the tutor can see handwritten working as it happens, through a camera angled at paper or a tablet and stylus, which we set up in the first session. The gain is that selection happens on syllabus code and tier rather than on who can cross a bridge from the mainland before dinner.

The money question, answered for IGCSE maths

An IGCSE maths tutor in Al Maryah Island is worth paying for once the free options are exhausted: the school's revision provision, then a past paper sat under timing and marked honestly. After that, published rates in this market run AED 150 to 300 an hour online for a qualified subject tutor and AED 180 to 500 in-home, where the difference buys a mainland drive. IB Gram teaches Al Maryah Island students live over video, board-correct from session one, with no UAE home visits. Send the syllabus code, the tier and a marked script, and take a free diagnostic trial before spending anything.
