IB and IGCSE tutors for Al Zahiyah families

IB and IGCSE tutors in Al Zahiyah are usually filling a gap created by arithmetic rather than by anyone's failure. In a class of twenty-six, an hour of teaching yields a couple of minutes of individual feedback per student, and a report card summarises a term in four sentences. This page is about finding out precisely what is wrong, what it costs to fix, and what the cheapest effective route looks like. Lessons run one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Al Zahiyah

Why the gap exists, and why it is not a judgement on the school

Al Zahiyah sits on the north-eastern side of Abu Dhabi island, the dense older district behind the eastern waterfront, with apartment blocks stacked close together and a mixed population drawn from across the world. Households here are frequently more budget-conscious than those on the western island, more likely to be in rented apartments, and more likely to have a single child receiving support rather than three. The household is also likelier to be weighing a tuition centre class against a private tutor on price alone.

The tutoring question that arrives from this district is usually diagnostic and financial at the same time. A report has come home with a grade that surprised the family, nobody has explained which component caused it, and the parent wants to know both what is actually wrong and what the least expensive way of fixing it is. Both are fair questions and both have specific answers, and the second one is easier to answer once the first has been settled properly.

Start with why the gap exists. In a class of twenty-four to twenty-eight students, an hour of teaching contains a fixed amount of individual attention, and the arithmetic is unforgiving: two or three minutes per student if the teacher distributes it evenly, which no teacher can do while also teaching. That is not a criticism of the school or the teacher. It is the structure of classroom teaching everywhere, and it is the thing one-to-one work exists to supplement. Understanding that changes the conversation from blame to logistics.

The second structural limit is reporting. A report card compresses a term into a grade, an effort mark and a few sentences written for thirty families. It cannot say that your child understands the chemistry and loses six marks a paper to unit omissions, or that they know the content and run out of time on the final long question. It is not a dishonest document and it is not a useless one; it is simply the wrong instrument for the question the family has. Those are the facts a plan needs, and they are not on the report. They are obtainable by asking the right person a specific question, and this page explains which question and which person.

What follows is built for a family that wants evidence before spending. There are tables comparing individual feedback across class, group and one-to-one settings, on what a report does and does not tell you, on symptoms and their underlying causes subject by subject, on how to measure progress without relying on a feeling, and on the cheapest effective path through the published market rates. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, and IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, since home visits are a service we run only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three routes cover almost all Al Zahiyah enquiries. The notes below focus on where each one produces a diagnosable problem, because that is what a first session should be identifying.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE

Terminal written papers after two years, tiered in many subjects, with codes that decide the match: Cambridge 0580 Mathematics, 0625 Physics, 0620 Chemistry, 0610 Biology, and Pearson 4MA1 and 4PH1. Most subjects now carry no coursework, so the entire grade is produced in a few hours of examination.

That concentration is why exam technique matters so much at this level and why it is the cheapest thing to fix. An Al Zahiyah student who knows the content and loses marks to timing and command terms can usually recover a grade in a handful of sessions, which is a very different proposition from a two-year programme.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups, each assessed against four criteria marked from 0 to 8, with no terminal examination unless the school enters eAssessment. Reports show criterion letters, which is more informative than a percentage if you know how to read them and less informative if you do not.

The criterion letters are an advantage for a family wanting evidence. Ask the school which criterion the marks were lost on, across subjects. A student consistently weak on one criterion in three different subjects has one problem, not three, and that is the single most useful thing a report of this kind can reveal.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

IB Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Internally assessed work carries a fifth to a quarter of each subject grade, which means a substantial part of the result is produced outside class and outside exam conditions.

For a budget-conscious household this is where attention is best spent, because internally assessed marks are earned under no time pressure with the criteria published in advance. A short block of criterion coaching on one component can move more marks than a term of general support in the same subject.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each note pairs a subject with the symptom that most often brings an Al Zahiyah family to a tutor, because the symptom usually points at a cause that is cheaper to fix than the family expects.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Core and Extended · Pearson 4MA1

The commonest symptom is a student who can do the work slowly and cannot finish the paper. That is almost always arithmetic and algebraic fluency rather than understanding, and short frequent drilling fixes it. The second symptom is a non-calculator paper exposing a gap nobody noticed.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The symptom at Higher Level is strong performance on Papers 1 and 2 with a collapse on Paper 3, which supplies no method. That is a reasoning gap rather than a content gap and it takes sustained practice on unfamiliar extended problems with the solution withheld.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The symptom is full marks on the calculation and nothing on the comment. Students produce a correct regression or model and then describe it inaccurately in words, which costs the interpretation marks. Written answers marked line by line fix this faster than more statistics teaching.

Physics

IB HL and SL · Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

The symptom is a student who understands the physics and cannot rearrange the equation. Beneath most apparent physics weakness in Years 10 and 11 is algebra, and treating it as physics wastes a term. Electricity is the exception that is genuinely a physics problem, particularly mixed circuits.

Chemistry

IB HL and SL · Cambridge 0620

The symptom is strong descriptive answers and lost calculation marks. Mole work is a procedural skill that decays without practice, and a fortnight of short drills recovers it. At Diploma level the recoverable marks are in the investigation, where the criteria are published in advance.

Biology

IB HL and SL · Cambridge 0610

The symptom is a student who clearly knows the material and scores in the middle band. The cause is almost always imprecise language: movement described without naming the gradient, the membrane or the protein. Marked written answers, weekly, are the whole remedy.

English

Cambridge 0500 and 0510 · IB English A and B

The symptom is running out of time on the final question. That is a planning and mark-allocation problem rather than a writing problem, and it is fixed by reading the marks available before writing. Students entered for First Language English who would fit Second Language English are a separate and common issue.

Business Studies

Cambridge 0450 · IB Business Management

The symptom is well-learned definitions and middling marks. Application carries the grade: the concept has to be applied to the specific business in the extract, with its figures. Students who revise terminology and not application reliably sit in the middle bands regardless of effort.

Economics

Cambridge 0455 · IB HL and SL

The symptom is lost diagram marks that the student believes they earned. An unlabelled axis or a shift drawn without a new equilibrium caps the answer however good the evaluation. Diagram drilling is quick, cheap and among the highest-yield work available in this subject.

Arabic as an additional language

Years 1-12

Mandatory in UAE private schools and taught separately from the first-language stream. The symptom in a mixed district like this one is a student placed by year group rather than by level, sitting in a class pitched well above them. Short frequent sessions on script and core vocabulary are the realistic route.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

The three formats below are ordered by cost, because that is how a decision is usually made in this district. The cheapest option that actually addresses the diagnosed problem is the right one.

Single-component block

A short run of three to six sessions aimed at one diagnosed problem: command terms in one subject, mole calculations, diagram accuracy, one Internal Assessment criterion. It ends when the problem is fixed and it is the least expensive thing that genuinely moves a grade.

  • Starts from a marked paper, not from a conversation
  • One named problem, with a defined end point
  • Work set between sessions and marked before the next
  • Re-tested on the same material at the end of the block

Weekly one-to-one support

One sixty-minute session a week across a term, alongside the school's scheme of work. The right choice where several things need attention or where a student needs the rhythm of a regular commitment, and the standard format for a Year 11 or Diploma candidate.

  • Same tutor and slot, quoted in Gulf Standard Time
  • Short written note to the parent after each session
  • Reviewed at four sessions and then left alone if working
  • Planned pauses for school exam weeks rather than cancellations

Small online group

Two to four students sharing a specialist for timed paper practice in one subject at the same level. Cheaper per student than one-to-one and considerably more attentive than a class of twenty-six, and well suited to paper technique where the errors are common across students.

  • Same board, same level, same tier for everyone in the group
  • Best used for timed papers and mark-scheme walkthroughs
  • Not suitable for an Internal Assessment or an individual diagnosis
  • Arranged where a matching group exists, not promised in advance

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Zahiyah

01

The arithmetic of a class hour, and what it leaves undone

The direct answer: in a class of twenty-four to twenty-eight students an hour of teaching contains roughly two or three minutes of potential individual feedback per student, and no teacher can distribute it evenly while also teaching the lesson. A one-to-one hour contains sixty minutes of it. That difference is the entire reason private tuition exists, and it has nothing to do with the quality of the school.

The arithmetic matters because it tells you what classroom teaching is good at and what it cannot do. It is good at delivering content systematically to a group, at modelling method, and at setting and reviewing common assessments. It cannot diagnose one student's recurring error pattern, because diagnosing that requires reading their work closely and asking them to explain their reasoning aloud.

That is why the symptoms described throughout this page persist for terms. A student who omits units loses marks on every paper and is told to be careful. A student who misreads command terms writes more and scores less and is told to focus. Neither instruction names the actual behaviour, because naming it requires watching one student work through several questions, which is a one-to-one activity.

The practical consequence for a budget-conscious Al Zahiyah family is encouraging rather than expensive. The work that only one-to-one can do is often short. Finding and fixing a recurring error pattern is a handful of sessions, not a year. The content teaching, which is the expensive part, is the part the school is already doing well.

What a report card does not tell you, and what to ask instead

A report card is a summary written for thirty families at once, under time pressure, in a format the school has standardised. It is not dishonest and it is not useless. It is simply the wrong instrument for the question a parent actually has, which is what specifically is costing marks and what should be done about it.

The items a report cannot carry are predictable. It cannot say which component the marks were lost on. It cannot say whether the problem is content, timing or command terms. It cannot say whether the student is three weeks behind the scheme of work because of a staffing change in October. And it cannot say whether the grade reflects a mock paper sat with half the syllabus still untaught.

All of that is obtainable by asking, and subject teachers answer specific questions readily. The difference between asking how my child is getting on and asking which criterion they lost marks on in the last assessment is the difference between a sentence of reassurance and a usable fact. The second question is also easier for a teacher to answer, which is why it usually gets a better reply.

The table lists the questions worth asking and who to direct each one to. Take them to a parents' evening or send them by email. In an MYP school the equivalent question is which criterion, across subjects, and that single question sometimes reveals that three apparent subject problems are one skill problem.

03

What a first diagnostic session should produce

  • A named list of losses, ordered by how many marks each costs
  • Each item classified as content, fluency, timing or technique
  • An estimated session count for each, and the order to tackle them
  • Built from a marked past paper rather than from a conversation

Before spending anything on a programme, a family should know what is wrong in specific terms. That is what a first session is for, and it is reasonable to judge a tutor entirely on what that session produces. The output should be written, specific, and short enough to read in a minute.

A good diagnostic ends with four things. A named list of what the student is losing marks on, in order of how many marks it costs. A statement of whether each item is content, fluency, timing or technique, because those have different remedies. An estimate of how many sessions each item needs. And the order in which they should be addressed, since algebra precedes physics and fluency precedes speed.

The input that makes this possible is a marked paper. A complete past paper, sat to time, unmarked or marked by the school, tells a tutor more in ten minutes than an hour of conversation. Bringing one to a first session is the single most efficient thing an Al Zahiyah family can do, and it costs nothing but the time to sit the paper at the weekend.

If a first session ends with general encouragement and a suggestion to book a term, that is useful information too. Ask for the written list before agreeing to anything further. A tutor who can produce it will do so readily, and one who cannot has not diagnosed anything yet. The list is also what makes a quote arguable: a problem described as a fortnight of drilling should not be priced as two terms.

04

Group class, small group or one-to-one: the honest trade-off

Al Zahiyah families compare these options more carefully than most, and the comparison deserves a straight answer rather than an argument for the most expensive choice. Each format does something the others do not, and the right one depends entirely on what the diagnostic found.

A tuition centre group class is the cheapest supervised option and is genuinely useful for revising content the whole group is weak on. Its limit is that it cannot diagnose an individual, cannot work on one student's Internal Assessment, and cannot adapt mid-session to one student's misunderstanding without stalling the others. For a student whose problem is a knowledge gap shared with their class, it is good value.

A small online group of two to four students at the same board, level and tier is the best-value format for timed paper practice, because the errors are often common and a mark-scheme walkthrough benefits everyone in the room. It stops being suitable the moment the work becomes individual, which includes any coursework component and any individual diagnosis.

One-to-one is the only format that does diagnosis, error-pattern work and criterion coaching, and for those jobs it is not a premium version of the others but the only option. The cost-effective approach in this district is to use it for exactly those jobs, in short blocks, and to leave content revision to the cheaper formats or to the school. Mixing the two deliberately, rather than choosing one format for everything, is what produces the lowest total spend.

05

Symptoms and their actual causes, subject by subject

Most families describe a problem by its symptom, which is reasonable because the symptom is what they can see. The value of a diagnostic is that the symptom and the cause are often in different subjects, and treating the symptom can mean paying for a term of teaching that was never going to help.

The clearest example is physics in Years 10 and 11. A student who understands forces and cannot rearrange an equation looks like a physics problem and is an algebra problem. Four weeks of algebra fluency resolves it; a term of physics teaching does not, because every lesson stalls at the same point and the student concludes they are bad at the subject.

The pattern repeats with different pairings. Lost marks in biology usually come from imprecise language rather than from gaps in knowledge. Middling business studies grades come from revising definitions rather than practising application. Lost economics marks come from diagram conventions, which take two sessions to fix and are worth marks on every paper for two years.

The table pairs each symptom with its usual cause and an honest estimate of the time involved. Use it to interrogate a quote. If a provider proposes a two-term programme for a problem this table describes as a fortnight of drilling, ask them to explain what the remaining months contain.

One caution about the table: it describes the usual cause, not the only one. A student losing marks on written answers may have a genuine content gap underneath, and the diagnostic exists precisely to tell the two apart before anybody spends money on the wrong remedy.

Measuring progress without relying on a feeling

The commonest way tutoring money is wasted is not fraud. It is a family paying for a year of sessions that everyone feels positive about, with no measurement, discovering at results time that nothing moved. Avoiding that costs nothing except the discipline of deciding in advance what will be measured.

The measure has to be the same thing twice. A raw mark on a comparable paper at the start and again after a block is evidence. A different paper of unknown difficulty is not. A tutor's report that the student is more confident is not evidence either, though it may be true and is worth having alongside the number.

Error pattern is the second measure, and in some ways the better one. If a student omitted units on nine marks' worth of questions in January and on one mark's worth in March, that is progress even if the overall score barely moved, because the remaining marks are elsewhere. Keeping a written list of recurring errors makes this visible without any extra work.

Set the review points in advance: four sessions in, to judge whether the match works, and at the end of each block, to judge whether the problem closed. Four sessions is early enough that changing tutor costs nothing. Discovering a mismatch in the final term, with a paper three weeks away, costs the grade.

None of this requires a spreadsheet. A single sheet of paper with the start mark, the end mark and three named errors on it does the whole job, and it is the thing to ask a tutor to maintain from the first session.

The cheapest effective path, with the published rates

The figures below are market rates in the UAE, drawn from providers' own published pricing and from a published 2026 Dubai tutoring rate survey by Bestimate. They are the market, not an IB Gram price list. For a household where cost is a genuine constraint, the useful question is not the lowest rate but the lowest total spend that fixes the diagnosed problem.

Published hourly figures run from roughly AED 45 to 65 at the budget online end and AED 33 to 52 from one platform's entry tier, AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB from an agency that publishes rates, AED 270 from a UK-based agency, a survey band of AED 200 to 450 and above for specialist exam-year work, and AED 650 at the premium named end. In-home visits in the emirate are published between roughly AED 180 and AED 500, with travel inside the hour.

Monthly bundles are where the travel premium shows up most plainly. A package of eight online sessions is advertised at around AED 799; four two-hour in-home sessions, which is fewer hours, is quoted at AED 1,599 to 1,799. On a weekly one-hour pattern the same survey puts budget support at roughly AED 240 to 600 a month, mid-market at AED 600 to 1,200, and specialist exam-year work at AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more.

The cheapest effective path usually looks like this. Spend one session on a diagnostic with a marked paper in hand. Buy a short block at a mid-market rate for the one thing that costs the most marks. Use a group format or the school for content revision. Re-test. Then decide whether a second block is justified. That sequence frequently costs less than two months of undifferentiated weekly support and moves more marks.

An in-home tutor in an Al Zahiyah apartment, compared with online

Al Zahiyah is central and well connected, so a tutor based on the island can reach most addresses here quickly, and families asking about in-home tuition are not being unrealistic about the geography. Two things about this district nonetheless point the other way.

The first is cost. Published in-home rates in the emirate start above the published online rates, between roughly AED 180 and AED 500 an hour with travel inside the rate, against roughly AED 45 to 300 online depending on tier. For a household choosing the lowest effective total spend, that difference pays for the extra sessions that actually close a gap.

The second is space. Apartments in this district are generally compact, often with one working surface shared with the rest of the household's evening. A video session in a bedroom with a laptop is frequently quieter and less disruptive than a visitor in the living room, and it does not require the family to clear a room for an hour.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE, and does not operate a centre in the emirate. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, with a shared screen for marking papers. In-home provision still has a real advantage for younger children who need an adult physically present to stay on task, which is worth saying on a page recommending something else. For a Year 11 candidate losing marks on one component, the subject match matters far more than the room.

09

Trials, conditions and the claims worth refusing

  • Trial conditions stated on the same screen as the offer, in writing
  • No grade promise, no promise of a grade rise, no outcome-linked refund
  • No regulator or board approval claimed without a document number
  • No statistic without the number of students, the date and the method
  • No supplied text, data or analysis for any assessed submission

Where a trial session is offered free, the conditions attached belong on the same screen as the word: how long the session is, whether it is a full lesson or an introduction, whether a card is required, and what happens automatically afterwards. A trial with undisclosed conditions is a sales step rather than a trial, and it is reasonable to ask for the terms in writing before booking.

Several claims in this market should simply be refused. Any promise of a specific grade, any assurance that marks will rise by a stated amount, or a refund tied to a result: no provider can promise an examination outcome and anyone offering to is selling something other than teaching. Any claim of approval, accreditation or licensing from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, MoHRE, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, unless a document number can be shown. IB Gram holds none of those.

Statistics without their basis are the third category. A satisfaction percentage, an average score or a success rate presented without the number of students, the date and the method behind it is not evidence. Published review ratings should be checked for consistency as well: researched competitors in this market display different rating figures on the same page.

The fourth is the offer to supply completed work. Assessed coursework must be the student's own, and the consequence of a malpractice finding falls on the student and can mean a diploma is not awarded. A tutor explains the criteria, questions the method and gives feedback on existing drafts. Nothing beyond that enters a submission, and board papers and mark schemes come through the school rather than from a provider's library.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Zahiyah

Al Zahiyah's neighbours matter here mainly for where the schools are and what the comparison options cost. Each note is written from an Al Zahiyah apartment rather than from a map.

Al Maryah Island

Immediately north across a short bridge, a financial district with no school of its own. Al Zahiyah and Al Maryah households often use the same schools and the same bus routes, though Al Maryah families tend to be scheduling around working hours rather than around cost.

Al Nahyan

South-west in the centre of the island, with a dense school mix and a long-established Arabic-speaking population. Al Zahiyah students frequently attend schools in that corridor, and the afternoon run between the two is short enough for a 16:30 start.

Al Wahda

West around the Al Wahda interchange, one of the slowest points on the island at pick-up. Al Zahiyah families whose school run passes through it should plan a 17:00 start on weekdays rather than 16:30.

Al Khalidiyah

Across the island to the west, with the heaviest concentration of tuition centres in the city. It is the natural comparison point for a budget-conscious Al Zahiyah family, and the drive there and back is itself a second school run in the same afternoon.

Al Reem Island

South-east across the channel, home to The British International School Abu Dhabi and Repton Abu Dhabi. From Al Zahiyah the run is fifteen to twenty-five minutes, which makes it one of the more manageable Diploma commutes on the island.

Saadiyat Island

North over the bridge, home to Cranleigh Abu Dhabi. Fewer Al Zahiyah families commute there, and those who do commit the whole afternoon, so evening slots from 18:00 are the practical option.

Al Mina and the port area

Directly north-west of Al Zahiyah, largely commercial. It matters mainly as traffic: port and market movements add to the same roads the school buses use, which is part of why the window before 16:30 is unreliable here.

This cluster covers British, American, IB and Indian-curriculum provision within a short run of Al Zahiyah. Because the district is mixed, a single apartment block can contain students on four different boards, so the syllabus code matters more than the school name when matching a tutor.

  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Repton Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi Grammar School
  • International School of Choueifat Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi Indian School

Schools reached across a bridge

A smaller group travels north or off-island for a particular programme. Those households commit the afternoon, which usually means an evening slot and, where cost matters, a shorter session timed around one specific component rather than general weekly support.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi

Schools are named as context for Al Zahiyah families. IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from or commercial relationship with any school listed, and current inspection ratings should be read on ADEK's own published school listing.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Sit one full paper at the weekend

Before contacting anyone, have your child write one complete past paper to time, in one sitting, with nothing open. It costs a Saturday morning and it is the single most informative input a tutor can be given. A conversation about how a student feels about a subject tells almost nobody anything useful.

  2. 02

Ask the subject teacher the specific question

Email the subject teacher and ask which questions the marks were lost on and whether the cause is content, timing or command terms. Specific questions get specific answers, and in an MYP school the equivalent question is which criterion, across subjects. Three apparent subject problems are often one skill problem.

  3. 03

Buy a diagnostic before buying a programme

Pay for one session and judge it on what it produces: a written list of losses in priority order, each classified by type, with an estimated session count and an order to tackle them. If the session ends in general encouragement instead, ask for the list before committing to anything more.

  4. 04

Match the format to the finding, not to the budget alone

A content gap shared with the class is cheapest addressed in a group. Timed paper practice suits a small group at the same board and tier. An individual error pattern or an Internal Assessment criterion needs one-to-one, in a short block. Using the cheapest format for the wrong job is more expensive than using the right one.

  5. 05

Set the review points before the first session

Four sessions in, to judge the match, and at the end of each block, with a re-test on the original material. Four sessions is early enough that changing tutor is free. The alternative is a year everybody feels positive about and a results day nobody expected.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The diagnosis comes before the quote

A written list of what is losing marks, in priority order and classified by type, is produced before any programme is proposed. A family can then judge a quote against a named problem rather than against a general offer of support.

The cheapest format that works is recommended

Where a group class or the school's own support would address the finding, this page says so. One-to-one is used for the jobs only one-to-one can do, which is diagnosis, error patterns and criterion coaching, and those are usually short blocks.

Progress measured on comparable material

Blocks begin and end with the same or equivalent material, sat to time, so the change in raw mark is evidence rather than impression. The recurring error list is kept in writing, which makes improvement visible even when the headline score moves slowly.

Market rates published with their sources

Every AED figure on this page is attributed to the provider or survey that published it and is presented as the market rather than as our price. That is what makes it possible for a budget-conscious household to tell a fair quote from an inflated one.

No promises that cannot be kept

No grade guarantee, no outcome-linked refund, no claimed approval from any regulator or examination board, and no statistic without its basis. IB Gram holds no accreditation from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, MoHRE, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Zahiyah: your questions answered

Why does my child need a tutor if the school in Al Zahiyah is good?+

Because of arithmetic rather than quality. In a class of twenty-four to twenty-eight, an hour of teaching contains two or three minutes of potential individual feedback per student, and no teacher can distribute that evenly while also teaching. Classroom teaching is good at delivering content systematically and poor at diagnosing one student's recurring error pattern, because that requires reading their work closely and hearing them reason aloud. The gap is structural, it exists in every school system, and the work that fills it is often shorter than families expect.

What should I ask the subject teacher instead of how my child is doing?+

Ask which questions the marks were lost on and why, and whether the cause is a content gap, a timing problem or command terms. Ask what each component is worth in the final grade. Ask whether the class is on schedule against the scheme of work. Specific questions get specific answers and are easier for a teacher to answer than a general one. In an MYP school, ask which criterion the marks were lost on, across subjects, because one weak criterion in three subjects is one problem rather than three.

What should a paid diagnostic session actually produce?+

Four things, in writing. A named list of what the student is losing marks on, ordered by how many marks each costs. A classification of each item as content, fluency, timing or technique, since those have different remedies. An estimated session count for each. And the order to tackle them, because algebra precedes physics and fluency precedes speed. Bring a complete past paper sat to time, which tells a tutor more in ten minutes than an hour of conversation. If the session ends in general encouragement, ask for the list before booking more.

Is a tuition centre group class in Abu Dhabi good value?+

For the right job, yes. A group class is the cheapest supervised option and is genuinely useful for revising content the whole group is weak on, since the teaching is identical for everyone who needs it. Its limits are real: it cannot diagnose an individual, cannot work on one student's Internal Assessment, and cannot adapt mid-session without stalling the others. Ask the class size before comparing any rate, because six students and twelve students are different products at the same headline price.

When is a small online group better than one-to-one?+

For timed paper practice where two to four students share the same board, level and tier. The errors are often common across students, so a mark-scheme walkthrough benefits everyone present, and the cost per student is lower than one-to-one. It stops being suitable the moment the work becomes individual, which includes any coursework component and any genuine diagnosis. Groups are arranged where a matching set of students exists at the same point in the same specification, rather than promised in advance of one existing.

My child understands physics but keeps losing marks. What is going on?+

Nine times out of ten it is algebra rather than physics. A student who understands forces and cannot rearrange an equation at speed looks like a physics problem and is a mathematics problem, and every physics lesson stalls at the same point until the fluency is fixed. Roughly four weeks of algebraic rearrangement drilling resolves it. A term of physics content teaching does not, and it leaves the student concluding they are bad at the subject. Electricity, particularly mixed series and parallel circuits, is the genuine exception.

Why does my child score in the middle band in biology despite knowing the content?+

Almost always imprecise language. Mark schemes in biology reward naming the mechanism: the gradient, the membrane, the transport protein, the specific enzyme. An answer that describes something moving without naming what makes it move loses marks the student believes they earned, and the student reads the lost marks as unfair rather than as a phrasing habit. The remedy is marked written answers, weekly, against the official scheme, with the reason written next to each lost mark. Four to six weeks is usually enough.

How quickly can diagram marks in economics be fixed?+

Usually in two or three sessions, which makes it among the highest-yield work available in the subject. The marks are lost on convention rather than on understanding: an axis labelled with a quantity where a price belongs, a curve shifted without a new equilibrium marked, a diagram drawn after the written answer rather than before it. Once the conventions are automatic, they earn marks on every paper for the rest of the course. It is worth asking for this specifically rather than booking general economics support.

How do we tell whether a tutoring block in Al Zahiyah is working?+

On the same material twice. A raw mark on a comparable paper at the start of a block and again at the end is evidence; a different paper of unknown difficulty is not. Track the recurring error list as well, because a student who omitted units on nine marks' worth in January and one mark's worth in March has improved even if the total barely moved. Set review points in advance: four sessions in to judge the match, and the end of each block to judge the outcome.

What is the least expensive route that actually moves a grade?+

One paid diagnostic session with a marked paper in hand. Then a short three to six session one-to-one block on whichever problem costs the most marks. Then content revision through a group class or the school's own support, which is free to the family. Then a re-test, and only then a decision about a second block. That sequence frequently costs less than two months of undifferentiated weekly support and moves more marks, because every dirham is spent on a named problem.

Does IB Gram send a tutor to apartments in Al Zahiyah?+

No. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, and IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; that service runs only in India. Two things about this district point the same way. Published in-home rates in the emirate run from roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel inside the rate, against roughly AED 45 to 300 online depending on tier. And apartments here are compact, so a video session at a desk with headphones is often less disruptive than clearing the living room for a visitor.

What should a free trial session include before we book?+

The conditions, stated in writing on the same screen as the offer: how long the session is, whether it is a full lesson or an introduction, whether a card is required, and what happens automatically afterwards. A trial with undisclosed conditions is a sales step rather than a trial. It is reasonable to ask what the session will produce as well, because a trial that ends with a written list of what is losing marks is worth far more than one that ends with a positive impression.

Which tutoring claims should I refuse outright?+

Any promise of a specific grade, any assurance that marks will rise by a stated amount, or a refund tied to a result, because no provider can promise an examination outcome. Any claim of approval, accreditation or licensing from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, MoHRE, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson without a document number; IB Gram holds none of those. Any statistic presented without the number of students, the date and the method behind it. And any offer to supply completed coursework, which exposes the student to a malpractice finding.

How do I know whether a published rating is trustworthy?+

Check it for internal consistency first. Researched competitors in this market display different rating figures in different places on the same page, and one shows a rating from a small number of reviews alongside a claim about a far larger student body. A rating that is not backed by countable, attributable, dated reviews is a decoration. More useful signals are whether the provider will state the tutor's board and syllabus code, whether reschedule terms are in writing, and what a first session produces.

Can a tutor help with an Internal Assessment if we are on a tight budget?+

Yes, and it may be the best value available, because internally assessed marks are earned under no time pressure with the criteria published in advance. A short block explaining how each criterion is awarded, questioning the method, and giving feedback on a draft the student has already written can move more marks than a term of general subject support. The boundary matters: no text, data or analysis is supplied for the submission, because a malpractice finding falls on the student and can mean a diploma is not awarded.

Diagnose first, then buy the smallest thing that fixes it

The useful order for an Al Zahiyah family is unglamorous and cheap. Have your child sit one full past paper to time at the weekend. Email the subject teacher the specific question about which marks were lost and why. Pay for one diagnostic session and insist it ends in a written list. Then buy the shortest block that addresses whatever costs the most marks, leave content revision to the school or a group class, and re-test before spending anything further. Lessons run one-to-one over live video, with the marked paper shared on screen and kept by the student.
