IB IGCSE Private Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Hiring an IB IGCSE private tutor in Abu Dhabi is a purchasing decision before it is an academic one. This page sets out what to ask the school first, how the provider models differ on replacement and evidence, which permit a private tutor must hold under UAE law, what to settle in writing before the first invoice, and what records should exist after a month. Lessons for Abu Dhabi households run one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

  • Replacement policy and coverage limits stated before any invoice
  • Written session records you can audit, not verbal reassurance
  • Live video one-to-one, Gulf Standard Time, recordings retained
  • One free trial lesson, no card details, no obligation to continue

The questions nobody asks until the third month

A private tutor is one of the few significant purchases a family makes with almost no written terms. Most arrangements in this market begin with a WhatsApp message, settle on an hourly figure, and never establish what happens if the match is wrong, who owns the session notes, what the tutor is permitted to do with coursework, or whether the person teaching your child holds the work permit UAE law requires. Those questions are easy in week one and awkward in month three.

This page is written to be used before you hire rather than after. It starts with the conversation to have with your child's own school, because a surprising amount of targeted support is already funded and unused. It then compares the provider models honestly, sets out the permit position with its legal source, lists the nine things worth settling in writing, and describes the records a private arrangement should produce so that you can tell progress from pleasantness.

The emphasis on records is deliberate. A private tutor working one-to-one is unobserved by definition. Nobody from the school sits in, there is no departmental moderation, and the only evidence available to a parent is whatever the tutor chooses to write down. A tutor who produces a marked script, a dated draft history and a note naming the component being worked is accountable. A tutor who produces a monthly invoice and a verbal assurance that things are going well is not, however pleasant the sessions are.

Both boards are in scope here because Abu Dhabi households frequently run both. IGCSE grades in most subjects are decided entirely by externally marked scripts, so the arrangement should be judged on timed work. Diploma grades are part external paper and part internal assessment marked by the school and moderated by the board, so a Diploma arrangement should be judged on draft history as well. The two need different evidence, and a single engagement covering both should say which is which.

One point to settle at the outset. Tuition for UAE families is delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send a tutor to a UAE address; in-home visits are offered only in India. If an in-home arrangement is what you want, this page still tells you what to ask for and what the market charges, because the questions about permits, records, replacement and assessed work apply to whoever you hire, not only to us.

A note on how to use the tables below. They are written to be read before a decision rather than after one, and three of them are checklists you can send as a message: the provider-model comparison, the nine engagement terms, and the permit categories. Copy the rows that matter to you into one email, ask for written answers, and you will have done more due diligence than most families manage in a whole year of paid sessions.

At a glance

  • Start with the school: ask what targeted support already exists
  • Compare models on replacement and evidence, not only on rate
  • MoHRE private tuition permit: free, two years, specific eligible categories
  • Nine engagement terms worth settling before the first paid hour
  • Records that let you audit the month: scripts, drafts, notes, recordings
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Private tuition is bought against a programme's assessment model, and the four programmes below are assessed in four different ways. Knowing which parts of your child's grade are already decided, and by whom, is what stops an arrangement being sold to you in the wrong shape.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

In most subjects the entire grade comes from externally marked papers written during a series. There is no coursework safety net, no moderation conversation and no second chance inside the same series. A private arrangement for IGCSE should therefore be judged almost entirely on timed written work and the marks it earns, and the tier decision taken in Year 10 is the single most consequential academic choice in the course.

British-curriculum enrolment is the largest stream in Abu Dhabi private education and the two boards are split unevenly across schools. A household with children at two schools in the same district can be managing Cambridge in one and Pearson Edexcel in the other, which means two sets of specification codes, two formula conventions and two examination officers to email.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and creativity, activity, service. Part of every subject grade is an internal assessment marked by the school and moderated by the board, which means a share of the result is settled well before study leave. A private arrangement here should show draft history as well as marked papers, since those are the two separate things being bought.

Diploma provision in the emirate is concentrated rather than widespread, and in several schools a Higher Level course is taught by a single teacher. That shapes what private tuition is actually for here: not a replacement for teaching, but a second specialist view on a component where the school has no second specialist to offer.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Assessed internally against four published criteria per subject on an eight-point scale, with no external papers. A private arrangement at this stage is easy to sell and hard to evaluate, because there is no external mark to compare against. The honest evidence is criterion-referenced: which descriptor band the work sat in, which one it sits in now, and what the tutor did between those two points.

Because several Abu Dhabi schools run Middle Years directly into Diploma Year 1, a student can reach the Diploma without ever having sat a two-hour externally marked paper. That is the most useful thing a private tutor can address in Middle Years Year 5 here, and almost nobody is sold it.

ALEVELAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

A Level, where the school continues post-16 on the British route

Linear, externally examined and modular only in the limited sense that some boards allow component resits. The step up from IGCSE is in analytical depth rather than volume, and the first-term grades in Year 12 are frequently a shock to students who found IGCSE straightforward. Private arrangements here are usually bought late, in the January of Year 13, when earlier work would have cost less and achieved more.

A number of Abu Dhabi British-curriculum schools run A Levels alongside or instead of the Diploma, and some offer both. A household choosing between them in Year 11 is really choosing between breadth with coursework and depth with examinations, and the right private tuition question at that point is about the choice rather than about a subject.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the components Abu Dhabi families most often hire a private tutor for, chosen because each one is diagnosable. A request for help with maths is hard to act on. A request about Paper 3 unfamiliar-context questions, or about criterion B in a science investigation, is specific enough to match properly.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches, Paper 3

HL only

The Higher Level extended-response paper, built around unfamiliar problem framing rather than new content. It rewards students who can read a scaffolded problem and see where it is going. This is the single most frequently requested component in the emirate and the hardest to staff with a genuine specialist.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation, statistics strand

HL and SL

Regression, hypothesis testing and confidence in reading calculator output. Students who chose this course expecting less rigour meet it here. Marks go on interpreting a result in context rather than on computing it.

Physics, the scientific investigation

HL and SL

Twenty-four marks across four criteria, marked by the school and moderated externally. Research question formulation and the treatment of uncertainty account for most of the lost marks. The work must be the student's own, which makes this a coaching task rather than an editing one.

Chemistry, organic mechanisms and energetics

HL and SL

The two topics that separate a 5 from a 7 at Higher Level. Mechanism drawing is a drillable skill with a published convention, and energetics rewards students who can set out a cycle before attempting a number.

Biology, extended response

HL and SL

Volume is the visible problem and structure is the real one. A scoring extended answer names a process, states a mechanism and gives a consequence, in that order. Students who revise by rereading reach a ceiling quickly in this subject.

English A: Language and Literature, individual oral

HL and SL

The most coachable component in the Diploma, because its structure, timing and criteria are published and its content is chosen by the student. Rehearsal against the criteria moves marks reliably, and the extract pairing is where most of the thinking happens.

Economics, evaluation and diagram accuracy

HL and SL

A fully labelled diagram with an explanation tied to the axes scores where prose does not. Higher Level adds quantitative work and a policy paper that rewards weighted judgement rather than length.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, Extended Paper 4

Extended

Multi-step problem solving under time, with method marks available throughout. The most reliable improvement available is in shown working and pacing rather than in additional content.

Cambridge IGCSE Sciences 0620, 0625 and 0610, alternative to practical

Core and Extended

A predictable, rarely practised paper that tests experimental reasoning rather than recall. Four focused sessions typically recover marks that months of content revision do not touch.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE 4MA1, 4PH1 and 4CH1

Foundation, Higher and single tier

Different formula provision and a different balance of calculation from their Cambridge equivalents. A student revising from the wrong board's material loses marks that have nothing to do with ability.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core, all Diploma candidates

Up to three points on the Diploma total between them. Private tuition here is process work: narrowing the question, planning the argument, and reading the student's own draft against the published criteria.

Arabic and UAE Social Studies alongside the main curriculum

First and additional language

Required subjects running in parallel with an international curriculum, and the most common reason a timetable has no spare evening. Private support is usually about keeping pace rather than about examination technique.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Private tuition is bought in three shapes and the shapes carry different obligations. Each runs one-to-one over live video with a written record afterwards, and each should be quoted separately rather than folded into a single hourly figure.

A standing weekly engagement

One subject, one slot, one tutor, reviewed at the end of each term. This is the arrangement that produces comparable evidence, because the conditions stay constant. It should come with a stated replacement route, a cancellation window that applies to both sides, and a written note on a fixed cadence rather than on request.

  • Same tutor, same slot, reviewed termly against the start point
  • Cancellation window that binds the tutor as well as the family
  • Written note on a fixed cadence, not when asked for one
  • Replacement route agreed before it is ever needed

A scoped block of hours

A fixed number of sessions against a named target: one component, one topic, one draft cycle. Blocks are easier to evaluate than open-ended arrangements because the question at the end is simply whether the named target moved. They also protect a household from drift, where a tutor remains booked long after the original problem was solved.

  • A written target naming the component, not the subject
  • Agreed number of sessions with an end date
  • A short report at the end against that target
  • Renewal as a fresh decision, not an automatic rollover

A coursework review cycle

Scheduled reading of the student's own drafts against the published criteria, timed to the school's internal deadlines. The deliverable is annotated feedback and a plan for the next version. Authorship stays with the student at every stage, and the version history is kept precisely so that authorship is demonstrable if anyone asks.

  • Feedback as criterion references and questions, never replacement text
  • Dated draft versions retained for the whole cycle
  • Timed to the school's deadlines rather than ours
  • No reproduction of board documents; official links instead

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

Ask the school first: the support that may already exist

Before hiring anyone, ask your child's head of department one question: what targeted support is already running for this subject and this year group. Most Abu Dhabi schools run something, and much of it is poorly advertised internally. Intervention sessions, subject clinics at lunchtime, Saturday revision in the term before a series, departmental past-paper sessions, learning-support screening and English-as-an-additional-language provision all exist in different combinations.

The honest reason to ask first is arithmetic. School-run support is already paid for inside the fees, and it has one advantage no external tutor can match: the person delivering it is also the person marking the internal assessment and setting the predicted grade. If the same gap can be closed inside the school day, closing it there is both cheaper and better connected.

What school support is usually bad at is individual diagnosis and pace. A clinic serving twelve students cannot sit one of them down with their own marked script for twenty minutes, and a departmental revision session moves at the median. That is the actual gap a private arrangement fills, and defining it that way makes the engagement much easier to scope: you are not buying teaching, you are buying diagnosis and individual pace.

There is one request worth making explicitly. Ask for the subject's assessment breakdown and the department's view of where this particular student is losing marks, in writing. Schools generally provide it when asked directly, and it is the most useful single document a private tutor can be handed at the start. It also makes the first session substantive rather than exploratory, which is an hour saved.

02

Comparing provider models without comparing rates

Four models compete for this enquiry and they differ in ways an hourly rate hides. A specialist agency screens and replaces but carries an overhead. An international marketplace offers breadth and leaves vetting to you. An independent freelancer is cheapest per hour and has no bench, so illness or departure ends the arrangement. A tuition centre offers group delivery at a lower unit cost and less individual diagnosis.

The two columns that actually predict how an engagement goes are replacement and evidence. Replacement answers what happens in week six when the match turns out to be wrong, and the honest answers range from a new shortlist within days to nothing at all. Evidence answers what you will be able to read at the end of the month, and the range runs from marked scripts and dated drafts to a WhatsApp summary.

Published rates are worth comparing only when the source and date are attached. Most competitor pages in this market either publish no rate or quote in US dollars, which is of no use to a household budgeting in dirhams. The table below names a source for every band, and nothing in it is an IB Gram price list; our own figure depends on subject, level and cadence, and the free trial exists so that the teaching can be judged before the number is discussed.

One warning sign is worth stating plainly. Any provider asserting a star rating, a review count or a success percentage without naming the sample, the date and the method is making a claim that cannot be checked. Two pages found in this market show different aggregate ratings in different places on the same page. That is not a small inconsistency; it is a sign that the figure was decorative.

Nine things worth settling in writing before the first invoice

None of these requires a lawyer and all of them prevent a specific, common dispute. Put them in a message and ask for a reply in the same thread; a provider unwilling to answer in writing has told you something useful. The list is deliberately short and each item exists because of a failure that happens often enough to be predictable.

The most frequently skipped item is the cancellation window applied in both directions. Families generally accept a twenty-four hour notice rule for themselves and never think to ask what happens when the tutor cancels at short notice, which over a term is the more common event. A symmetrical rule, written down, removes the entire argument.

The second most skipped is scope. An engagement that says mathematics will drift; one that says Paper 3 unfamiliar-context questions, reviewed after eight sessions, will not. Scope is also what makes a replacement tutor possible, because a specific target can be handed over whereas a general relationship cannot.

The last three items are about your child rather than about money. What is recorded, where it is stored, how long it is kept and how you have it deleted are reasonable questions under UAE personal-data law, and any provider handling a minor's work should be able to answer them without hesitation. So should the question of what the tutor will and will not do with assessed work.

None of this makes the relationship adversarial. A good tutor welcomes a written scope, because it protects them from the drift where a family quietly expects coursework help, examination technique and homework supervision from a single weekly hour. Clear terms mean the hour can be spent on the thing it was bought for, and the termly review has something to be measured against.

The permit a private tutor in the UAE must hold

Private tutoring in the UAE is not unregulated and a permit is not optional. The private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits. It is granted free of charge for two years, and the eligible categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students.

MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing. It lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, and the application runs through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. That is the official route, and it is the page to check rather than any provider's description of it. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are, in the government's own words, subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws.

Two things follow for a parent. First, no fee should ever be mentioned in connection with the permit itself, so a tutor who says the permit is expensive has not applied for one. Second, no amount can be quoted for the penalty, because no schedule of fines has been published; a figure circulating online could not be verified against any official source, and it is left off this page for that reason.

A separate point catches Abu Dhabi families specifically. A tutoring operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal from an individual tutor and requires an educational services permit for a training institute from the relevant authority. That permit is issued to institutions with premises. No provider, IB Gram included, should describe itself as approved by a regulator unless it holds the specific permit and can show the number.

05

Continuity: what happens when the tutor changes mid-course

Tutors leave. They relocate, change jobs, or run out of availability in February when everyone wants the same slot. In a Diploma course that lasts two years, a change of tutor partway through is likely rather than exceptional, and almost no private arrangement in this market plans for it. The cost of not planning is a new tutor spending three paid sessions rediscovering a diagnosis that already existed.

What makes a handover cheap is a small, boring pack: the error log or equivalent record of what has been diagnosed, the last three marked scripts, the dated draft history for any coursework, and a one-paragraph statement of the current target. That pack takes the departing tutor twenty minutes to assemble and saves the household several hundred dirhams. Ask for it to be a condition of the engagement from the start.

Draft history deserves particular attention on a Diploma coursework piece. If the versions are dated and the feedback sits as comments beside the student's own text, a new tutor can see exactly where the work stands against each criterion, and the student can demonstrate authorship if the school ever asks. If there is no version history, both of those advantages are gone and the new tutor is reading a finished-looking document with no idea what was contributed by whom.

The same pack is what makes an honest termly review possible. A review that compares the current position against a written start point can reach a real verdict, including the verdict that the arrangement should end. A review with no start point on record can only ever be a conversation about whether everyone feels positive, which is the conversation that keeps unproductive arrangements running for a year.

06

Reading the first month's records without being a subject teacher

Parents routinely say they cannot judge the work because they do not know the subject. In practice almost all of the useful judgement needs no subject knowledge at all. You are reading for specificity, for comparability and for whether the same problem keeps reappearing under a new name.

Specificity first. A note that says we worked on algebra tells you nothing. A note that says the student lost four method marks on simultaneous equations, drilled three items and scored full method marks on the re-sit tells you what was wrong, what was done and what happened. You do not need to know the mathematics to see that one is accountable and the other is not.

Comparability next. Two marks are only comparable if the conditions were. Ask where the paper was sat, how long was allowed, whether notes were available and what the first attempt scored. A rising set of marks collected under steadily easier conditions is not progress, and this is the most common way a month of records flatters an arrangement.

Finally, recurrence. Read the notes in sequence and look for the same problem in different words. Careless errors in week one, needs to slow down in week three, silly mistakes in week five is one unresolved problem described three times. A tutor who has genuinely diagnosed it will have named it the same way each time and shown what the drill changed.

If a month produces none of these, the useful move is not to complain but to ask for one specific thing: the last marked script, with the marks shown where they were awarded. The response to that request tells you most of what you need. A tutor who sends it within a day was already working that way; a tutor who sends a summary instead has told you that nothing of the kind exists.

WHAT A MONTH OF RECORDS SHOULD CONTAIN
RecordHow oftenWhat to look forWhat a weak version looks like
Marked script in the student's own handEvery fortnight at leastMarks shown per point or per criterion, not a totalA score with ticks and no annotation

07

Where a private tutor must stop

Two boundaries are absolute and both protect your child rather than the tutor. The first concerns assessed work. An internal assessment, an Extended Essay, a Theory of Knowledge essay and any Middle Years project must be the student's own work, authenticated by the school supervisor. A tutor may teach the skills, read what the student has produced and comment against the published criteria. Authorship does not transfer in whole or in part, and a provider offering finished coursework should be declined on the spot.

What legitimate feedback sounds like is narrower than people assume and more useful. The criterion asks for the method to state how the variable was controlled, and yours does not. This paragraph asserts a conclusion the data does not support; which part of your results would a sceptical reader challenge first? Both comments are specific, both are criterion-anchored, and neither supplies text. That is the line, and it is the same line a school supervisor works to.

The second boundary concerns board material. Syllabus documents, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and past papers belong to the IB, Cambridge and Pearson. A tutor may reference them and send you the official page where they sit. Reproducing them as downloads is a copyright problem, and for unreleased material it is a malpractice exposure as well. If a provider offers a drive folder of papers, ask where the material came from.

A third caution sits alongside these. A tutor who describes themselves as an examiner for a board should be able to evidence current status, and examiner status must never be presented as access to marking, boundaries or paper content, because it is not. The honest value of examiner experience is familiarity with how answers are credited, and that is worth something without needing to be oversold.

08

One tutor for both boards, or two?

Households running an IGCSE child and a Diploma child reasonably ask whether one tutor can cover both. The answer depends on the subject rather than on the tutor's enthusiasm. In mathematics the content overlap is genuine: the algebra that Cambridge 0580 Extended or Pearson 4MA1 Higher tests is the foundation Analysis and Approaches assumes, and a tutor strong in Diploma mathematics will teach the IGCSE material competently.

In the sciences the overlap is weaker than it looks. The content continues, but the assessment models diverge sharply: an IGCSE science grade rests on externally marked papers including an alternative-to-practical component, while a Diploma science grade includes an independently designed investigation worth twenty-four criterion marks. A tutor can know both and still be much better at one, and the right question is which component each child actually needs.

In languages and humanities the two should usually be separated. Diploma English A: Language and Literature and Cambridge First Language English 0500 reward different things, and a tutor who coaches the Diploma individual oral well is not therefore the right choice for IGCSE directed writing. The same holds for Economics and Business Management, where the Diploma's evaluation demands have no real IGCSE equivalent.

Where two tutors are the answer, the thing to insist on is a shared schedule and visible records for both, so that the household is managing one plan rather than two relationships. Where one tutor genuinely covers both, ask for the records to be kept separately by child and by specification, because the two will be judged against completely different evidence.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi districts this page serves

Because lessons run over live video, the district does not change who is available. What it changes is the earliest realistic session time, the school calendar the household is working to, and how far a visiting tutor would have to drive if you chose that route instead. These are the communities most enquiries come from.

Al Mushrif and Al Nahyan

Central, established and close to several long-running school cohorts. Enquiries here skew towards a single named component rather than a whole subject, which usually means the school has already diagnosed the problem accurately.

Al Maryah Island and Al Zahiyah

Short commutes and a working-parent pattern that pushes sessions past 18:00. Apartment living makes a quiet room the scarce resource, and a recorded session is often watched again later in the evening.

Al Wahda and Al Karamah

A dense mix of curricula within a small radius, which makes a specification check essential before any tutor is hired. Two students in neighbouring buildings can sit the same subject under different boards.

Masdar City and Al Falah

Longer bus journeys and a later effective evening. A 19:00 start is normal and works well over video, where a visiting tutor would be arriving after a substantial drive across the mainland.

Al Shamkha and Shakhbout City

Fast-growing communities where local availability of a named Higher Level specialist is thinnest. This is where the difference between hiring locally and hiring online is most visible in the shortlist.

Al Jubail Island and Hudayriyat Island

Small populations and long single-route journeys. Scheduling here benefits from a fixed weekly slot that nobody has to drive to, and from a recording for the nights when the slot has to move.

Baniyas and Madinat Zayed

Enquiries arrive later in the academic year than the island average, often after a mock result. The honest first conversation is usually about how many weeks remain and what that buys.

Eastern Mangroves and the Corniche

Established schooling nearby and the shortest school runs in the emirate, so earlier slots at 16:30 are genuinely available here in a way they are not further out.

School ecosystem

The island: Al Bateen, Al Mushrif, the Corniche and Al Maryah

Long-established provision with experienced coursework supervision. Households here usually arrive with a clear school diagnosis and want a second specialist opinion rather than general support, which makes the engagement easier to scope and easier to audit.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Ask the school what already exists

One email to the head of department asking what targeted support is running for this subject and year group, and for the department's written view on where this student is losing marks. Much of this is funded inside the fees and poorly advertised, and the written view makes any first private session substantive.

  2. 02

Send the specification, not the subject

Tell us the board, the code, the tier or level and the component in question, plus one marked script. That identifies what is actually being taught against. A tutor who does not ask which code the school entered your child for is teaching to a textbook rather than to a specification.

  3. 03

Settle the nine terms in one message

Scope, session length, cancellation both ways, replacement route, evidence cadence, the assessed-work boundary, the permit position, data and recordings, and what the rate excludes. Ask for a written reply. The answers take a provider ten minutes and prevent every common dispute.

  4. 04

Use the free trial as an audition

One full session with the tutor who would actually teach, at no charge and with no card details. Watch for whether they ask to see work before explaining anything, whether they name the component, and whether a written note arrives afterwards without being requested.

  5. 05

Review at the end of term against a written start point

Compare the records against the diagnosis made in week one. The verdict is continue, re-diagnose, or stop, and all three are given plainly. If the arrangement ends, the handover pack is assembled so that nothing already paid for has to be rediscovered.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Coverage and limits stated before the invoice

If no specialist currently covers the component you need, you are told that, with the realistic wait and the alternative, before anything is booked. A coverage limit disclosed in week one costs far less than the same limit discovered in week six.

A replacement route that exists on paper

A wrong match is a normal event over two Diploma years, not a failure to be argued about. The route to a new shortlist, and the handover pack that goes with it, are agreed at the start rather than improvised when it happens.

Records a parent can audit

Marked scripts in the student's own hand, written notes naming a component and an error type, comparable second attempts with conditions stated, and dated coursework drafts. Specific enough to check without knowing the subject.

The permit position, with its source

The MoHRE private tuition permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, free for two years, with the official application page named so you can verify rather than take our word for it. No invented fee, and no invented penalty figure.

Market rates published with sources attached

Every AED band on this page names the provider or report that published it, with the year. They are market observations rather than our price list, so that a household budgeting in dirhams has something real to compare against.

The assessed-work line held in both directions

Drafts are read and commented on against the published criteria, with version history kept so authorship is demonstrable. No board material is reproduced; the official link is sent instead.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What should I ask my child's Abu Dhabi school before hiring a private tutor?+

Two things, by email, to the head of department. First, what targeted support already runs for this subject and year group: intervention sessions, lunchtime clinics, past-paper sessions, learning-support screening or language provision. Much of it is funded inside the fees and poorly advertised. Second, ask for the department's written view on where this particular student is losing marks, and for the subject's assessment breakdown. Schools usually provide both when asked directly. That document is the most useful thing you can hand a private tutor, and it turns the first session from exploratory into substantive.

Does an independent freelance tutor or an agency make more sense for a two-year Diploma?+

Over two years the deciding factor is usually the bench rather than the rate. A freelancer is cheaper per hour and has no cover, so illness, relocation or a full February diary ends the arrangement with nothing behind it. An agency carries overhead and should, in exchange, provide a replacement shortlist and a handover pack. Ask both the same question: what happens in week six if this match is wrong, and what will I be able to read at the end of the month. The answers separate the models more reliably than any price comparison.

Does a private tutor in the UAE need a permit, and how do I check?+

Yes. The private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing and lists a two-working-day completion time with no fee. Ask the tutor directly whether they hold it. Anyone describing the permit as expensive has not applied, since there is no fee.

What is the penalty for tutoring in the UAE without a permit?+

The government's position is that individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No schedule of amounts has been published, and reporting on the subject has stated explicitly that the ministry did not specify the fine amounts or detail the penalties. Figures circulating online could not be verified against any official source, so no amount appears on this page. What matters practically for a family is simpler: ask whether the permit is held, and treat an evasive answer as an answer.

Can my child's own teacher at an Abu Dhabi school tutor them privately in the evening?+

It should be ruled out. Professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff in Abu Dhabi prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Beyond the rule, there is a structural reason to avoid it: the same person would be teaching, marking the internal assessment and setting the predicted grade, with a paid interest in the outcome. Verify the current policy wording with the school before acting on any arrangement of this kind.

What should be settled in writing before the first paid session?+

Nine items, and a short message covers all of them. The scope, named as a component rather than a subject. Session length and what realistically fits in it. A cancellation window that binds both sides equally. The replacement route if the match fails. The evidence cadence. The boundary on assessed work. The permit position. What is recorded, where it is stored, how long it is kept and how to have it deleted. And what the quoted rate excludes, itemised. A provider unwilling to answer those in writing has told you something useful.

What happens if the tutor leaves halfway through the Diploma?+

Over two years it is likely rather than exceptional, so it should be planned for at the start. Ask for a handover pack to be a condition of the engagement: the record of what has been diagnosed, the last three marked scripts, the dated draft history for any coursework, and a one-paragraph statement of the current target. It takes a departing tutor twenty minutes to assemble and saves a new one three paid sessions of rediscovery. Without it, a replacement reads a finished-looking document with no idea what has already been tried.

How can I judge the records when I do not know the subject?+

Almost all of the useful judgement needs no subject knowledge. Read for specificity: we worked on algebra tells you nothing, while four method marks lost on simultaneous equations, three items drilled, full method marks on the re-sit tells you everything. Read for comparability: ask where the paper was sat, how long was allowed and whether notes were available, because marks only compare when conditions do. And read the notes in sequence for the same problem renamed. Careless, then slow down, then silly mistakes is one unresolved problem described three times.

Is it worth paying more for a tutor who says they are an examiner?+

Only if the claim can be evidenced and only for what it genuinely buys. Current examiner status should be verifiable, and it must never be presented as access to marking decisions, grade boundaries or paper content, because it is not. What examiner experience honestly provides is familiarity with how answers are credited, which is worth something on a component where students lose marks to phrasing rather than to knowledge. At the premium end the market reaches AED 650 an hour, published by BartyED, so the question is whether that specific component needs it.

What does a private IB or IGCSE tutor in Abu Dhabi charge per hour?+

Market bands in 2026, each attributed on this page: a qualified subject tutor working online sits broadly between AED 150 and AED 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. A named specialist runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home visits carry the drive inside the rate and published bands reach AED 500. The premium end reaches AED 650. These are market observations rather than IB Gram's prices, and the free trial lesson exists so that teaching can be judged before rates are discussed.

Should I buy a block of hours or an open-ended weekly arrangement?+

A block is easier to evaluate and a standing arrangement produces better evidence, so the sensible pattern is a block first and a standing arrangement afterwards if the block worked. A block has a named target, an agreed number of sessions and an end date, which forces a real verdict instead of a drift. A standing arrangement keeps the conditions constant, which is what makes marks comparable across a term. What should be avoided is an open-ended arrangement with no named target, because nothing in it ever triggers a decision.

What is my child's tutor allowed to do with an Extended Essay draft?+

Teach the skills the task requires, read what the student has written, and comment against the published criteria. Legitimate feedback is a criterion reference or a question: the criterion requires the method to state how the variable was controlled, and yours does not; this paragraph asserts a conclusion the data does not support. What may never happen is authorship transferring in whole or in part. Keeping dated draft versions with comments beside the student's own text protects them, because progression becomes visible and attributable if the school asks how the work developed.

Can a tutor send us past papers and mark schemes to work from?+

A tutor should send you the official page where that material sits rather than the files themselves. Syllabus documents, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and past papers belong to the IB, Cambridge and Pearson, and reproducing them as downloads is a copyright problem; for unreleased material it is a malpractice exposure as well. If a provider offers a shared folder of papers, it is reasonable to ask where the material came from. Working from official sources also avoids the common error of revising from the wrong board's resources.

What is kept about my child, and how do we have it deleted?+

Ask and expect a straight answer, because this is a reasonable question under UAE personal-data law. A sensible arrangement collects the subject, the board and level, the school year, the work submitted for feedback and the session records, and nothing else. Recordings, where they exist, should have a stated retention period and a route to deletion on request. What should never be collected without a stated purpose is a child's photograph, grade history and school in a single form. If the purpose cannot be explained, the field should not be there.

Can one tutor cover an IGCSE and a Diploma child in the same household?+

In mathematics, often yes: the algebra tested by Cambridge 0580 Extended or Pearson 4MA1 Higher is the foundation Analysis and Approaches assumes, so a strong Diploma tutor teaches it well. In the sciences the overlap is weaker than it looks, because a Diploma grade includes an independently designed investigation worth twenty-four criterion marks and an IGCSE grade does not. In languages and humanities the two usually need separating. Where two tutors are the answer, insist on a shared schedule and separate records per child and per specification.

Do private tutors come to our home in Abu Dhabi, or is this online?+

IB Gram delivers one-to-one tuition over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, and does not send a tutor to a UAE address; home visits are offered only in India. If you prefer a visiting tutor, the questions on this page still apply to whoever you hire: the permit, the replacement route, the records, the assessed-work boundary and what the rate excludes. One practical difference is worth weighing. A video session can be recorded and rewatched, and a household in Al Shamkha gets the same shortlist as one on the Corniche.

Hire on terms, not on a rate

The gap between a private arrangement that works and one that quietly does not is rarely the hourly figure. It is whether the scope was named, whether the records exist, whether a replacement route was agreed before anybody needed it, and whether the person teaching your child holds the permit UAE law requires. All four are settled in one written exchange before the first invoice. Send the board, the specification code, the level and one marked script, and the trial lesson that follows is one full session with the tutor who would teach, free, with no card details and no obligation.
