IB DP Economics HL Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Economics HL home tutor in Abu Dhabi is usually hired on the strength of a conversation and judged six months later on a grade. This page proposes a shorter loop: five artefacts a parent can inspect, starting with a scored Paper 3 attempt, a folder of drawn diagrams and three dated commentary drafts. Sessions run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, so a family in Al Samha and a family on Saadiyat Island get the same economist.

  • A scored Paper 3 attempt produced in the first fortnight
  • Diagrams drawn and kept, not described in a summary
  • Three commentary drafts kept dated, in the student's own words
  • A free 45-minute trial lesson first, no card details required

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Five things you should be able to look at, rather than a report on how it is going

Economics is the Diploma subject where parents have the least ability to judge the teaching. In mathematics an answer is right or wrong; in economics a confident paragraph about inflation sounds like competence whether or not it would score. That is why so many Abu Dhabi families pay for a term, receive encouraging messages throughout, and discover from a mock that nothing shifted. The problem is not dishonesty. It is that nothing concrete was ever produced for anyone to inspect.

So this page is organised around artefacts. There are five, and each one proves something different: a scored Paper 3 attempt with the reasoning shown, a folder of hand-drawn diagrams with the labelling corrected, part (b) answers scored against the published level descriptors, three dated commentary drafts, and a short written record naming what changed each week. None of them predicts a grade. All of them can be examined by a parent who has never studied economics, which is the entire point.

The component structure explains why those five and not others. At Higher Level, Paper 1 carries 20 per cent through extended response, Paper 2 carries 30 per cent through data response, Paper 3 carries 30 per cent as the policy paper with quantitative work, and the portfolio of three commentaries carries 20 per cent. Paper 3 exists only at Higher Level, which makes it the component where Higher Level students most often lose the grade they were predicted, and the one least likely to be covered thoroughly in a crowded class.

The portfolio deserves its own attention because it behaves differently from everything else. Three commentaries of up to 800 words each, based on published news articles the student finds, each drawing on a different unit and a different key concept, marked by the school against lettered criteria and moderated externally. It is 20 per cent of the grade with no clock on it, which means it is the part of the course most responsive to calm work in term time and the part most often left until it cannot be rescued.

Teaching is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots. For economics that matters practically: diagrams are drawn on a shared screen and saved, answers are scored against descriptors with the wording visible, and the commentary drafts sit in a dated folder rather than in a notebook. Where AED figures appear they are published market bands with the source and year named, describing what Abu Dhabi families are charged rather than advertising a fee. If your child is in DP2 and missing a predicted grade, start with the Paper 3 section; if they are in DP1 with commentary deadlines ahead, start with the portfolio section, because that is the component you can still protect cheaply.

At a glance

  • Higher Level weightings: Paper 1 at 20 per cent, Paper 2 at 30, Paper 3 at 30, portfolio at 20
  • Paper 3 exists only at Higher Level and is where predicted grades most often slip
  • Three commentaries, up to 800 words each, on articles the student finds
  • Five inspectable artefacts, none of which requires you to understand economics
  • Sessions are online and one-to-one, timed to Gulf Standard Time
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Economics is usually a new subject in DP1, which makes the starting point unusually variable. These are the routes Abu Dhabi students arrive from.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Economics at Higher Level is examined through three written papers and a portfolio of three commentaries. The course runs across four units, from basic concepts through microeconomics and macroeconomics to the global economy, and is tied together by nine key concepts that the commentaries must engage with explicitly. Higher Level adds both depth and the quantitative policy paper, which has no Standard Level equivalent.

Economics is one of the larger Higher Level entries in Abu Dhabi, chosen by students heading to business, finance and policy routes in the UAE and abroad. Because most students meet the subject for the first time in DP1, the gap between the confident talkers and the accurate writers opens early and is rarely visible on a first report.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Individuals and societies in the MYP builds research, source handling and structured writing, assessed against criteria that reward investigation and communication. It does not build diagram work or quantitative handling of markets, so students arriving from this route usually write fluently and lose marks on technical accuracy rather than on expression.

Abu Dhabi IB continuum students often arrive at Higher Level Economics with strong essay habits from humanities subjects. That is a mixed inheritance: part (b) answers written as history essays, with narrative where evaluation was wanted, are the most common early loss and respond well to a few weeks of scored practice.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Edexcel upper secondary

Students may arrive from IGCSE Economics or Business Studies, or from neither. Those with IGCSE Economics have met supply and demand diagrams and basic macroeconomic indicators, usually with short directive questions. Those without have met none of it, and the diagram work in particular has to be built from the beginning rather than refined.

Abu Dhabi's large British-curriculum sector feeds both types into the same Higher Level class. Students who studied Edexcel Economics A at IGCSE tend to be strongest on definitions and weakest on evaluation; students with no economics background are often better at evaluation and slower on diagrams. Knowing which your child is saves a term of mismatched teaching.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Higher Level Economics sits inside a package, and the notes below say what each companion subject actually demands in writing or in calculation.

Economics

Higher Level

Three papers and a portfolio. Paper 1 is extended response with a 10-mark explain part and a 15-mark evaluate part; Paper 2 is data response; Paper 3 is the quantitative policy paper unique to Higher Level. Marks are lost most often in part (b) evaluation, in diagram labelling and in Paper 3 calculation set out without interpretation.

Economics

Standard Level

The same four units without the policy paper, with Paper 1 at 30 per cent, Paper 2 at 40 per cent and the portfolio at 30 per cent. Students considering a move down should note that the portfolio weight rises, so commentary quality matters more rather than less.

Business Management

Higher Level and Standard Level

Frequently taken alongside economics by Abu Dhabi students. It rewards applied case analysis and a different evaluation style, and students who mix the two conventions tend to write business answers in economics papers, where the diagram and terminology marks then go uncollected.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Higher Level and Standard Level

The common pairing with Higher Level Economics. Its handling of functions, rates of change and statistics maps directly onto Paper 3 quantitative work, particularly elasticity, tax incidence and national income calculations.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Higher Level and Standard Level

Strong algebra, which helps with Paper 3 arithmetic, though it provides little practice in interpreting a number economically. A student can compute a correct elasticity figure and collect nothing for failing to say what it implies for the firm.

Geography

Higher Level and Standard Level

Shares development, trade and sustainability material with the global economy unit. Students taking both can reuse case evidence, provided they keep the two subjects' evaluation conventions distinct in their writing.

Global Politics

Higher Level and Standard Level

Overlaps with the global economy unit on trade, integration and development. Its essay style rewards contested argument, which transfers well to economics part (b) answers if the student also brings the required diagram and terminology.

English A: Language and Literature

Higher Level and Standard Level

The written load here collides directly with commentary deadlines in most Abu Dhabi schools. Families planning economics hours should check the English coursework calendar before committing to a schedule in those weeks.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The exhibition and essay land in the same terms as the economics portfolio. Students who treat both as writing tasks to be done in the same fortnight produce weaker versions of each, and the portfolio is the one that carries 20 per cent of a subject grade.

Extended Essay

Core

Often written in economics by Higher Level students. Supervision belongs to the school; a tutor teaches research method and gives feedback on the student's own drafts, and the submitted text stays the student's work throughout.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, distinguished by which artefact they produce. All three run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

Paper 3 block

A focused block on the Higher Level policy paper: calculation routes, the interpretation that turns a number into an economic statement, and the policy recommendation with its justification. Each session produces a scored attempt with the reasoning written out, which is the single most useful artefact a Higher Level Economics parent can hold.

  • Quantitative routes practised until they are automatic
  • Every figure followed by what it implies, in writing
  • Policy recommendations justified against the data given
  • Attempts scored with reasons, not ticked

Scored writing, weekly

Weekly sessions producing one part (a) or part (b) answer under time, scored against the published level descriptors with the wording visible to the student. Diagrams are drawn by hand and corrected label by label. The folder of answers and diagrams builds into the record that shows whether the writing is actually changing.

  • One timed answer written in or before each session
  • Scored against published descriptors, with the reason stated
  • Diagrams drawn by hand, corrected for axes, labels and shifts
  • The folder kept so the first answer can be compared with the tenth

Portfolio sessions, dated

Sessions timed to the school's internal commentary deadlines rather than the exam session. Article selection criteria, unit and key concept coverage, diagram choice and the 800-word discipline are taught, then each draft is read and returned with questions. The commentaries stay the student's own work from first version to submission.

  • Article suitability taught as criteria the student applies themselves
  • Unit and key concept coverage planned across all three commentaries
  • Each draft dated so the progression is visible
  • Feedback written as questions, never as replacement text

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The five artefacts, and what each one actually proves

A parent who has not studied economics can still audit economics tuition, provided the right things are produced. The five below were chosen because each is concrete, each is cheap to generate inside a session, and each proves something the others do not. Between them they cover the three papers and the portfolio, which is the whole of the assessment, and none of them requires you to judge whether an argument about monetary policy is sound.

The honest limits matter as much as the uses. A scored Paper 3 attempt shows whether quantitative work is being interpreted rather than merely computed; it does not show that the student will perform under exam pressure. A folder of diagrams shows technical accuracy improving; it says nothing about evaluation. Dated commentary drafts show whose thinking moved; they cannot tell you what the school will award. Anyone claiming a single artefact predicts a grade is overselling a useful thing.

Used together over eight weeks, though, they answer the question families actually have, which is whether to continue. If the diagram folder is cleaner, the part (b) scores are rising on the same question types, the Paper 3 attempts now carry interpretation after each figure, and the commentary drafts are improving in the student's own voice, the work is landing. If none of that is true, more sessions of the same kind will not change it, and that conclusion is available weeks before the next school report.

02

Paper 3 is where Higher Level Economics is actually decided

Paper 3 carries 30 per cent of the Higher Level grade and exists only at Higher Level. It asks for calculation and then for policy: work out the figure, say what it means, recommend a response and justify the recommendation against the data supplied. Students who are strong essay writers frequently treat it as an arithmetic exercise, produce correct numbers and collect a fraction of the available marks because nothing was interpreted.

The failure is visible on any scored attempt. An elasticity value appears with no statement of what it implies for revenue or incidence. A national income figure is computed and left to speak for itself. A policy is recommended with a generic justification that could have been written without reading the data at all. None of this is a mathematics problem, which is why asking a mathematics tutor to help with Paper 3 usually produces better arithmetic and the same mark.

The repair is mechanical and it works. Every figure is followed, in writing, by a sentence saying what it implies in this context. Every recommendation cites a number from the stimulus. Every attempt is scored with the reasoning shown rather than ticked. In a crowded Abu Dhabi class, Paper 3 is often the component taught last and practised least, which is precisely why a short block on it is the highest-yield purchase available to a Higher Level student with a predicted grade they are not hitting. Six focused sessions here can reach a component worth almost a third of the grade.

03

Diagram marks are drawn, not described

Economics is unusual among the essay subjects in awarding marks for drawing. A diagram that is correctly titled, with both axes labelled with the right variables and units, the original and new curves distinguished, the shift direction correct and the relevant areas identified, earns marks that a flawless paragraph cannot recover. Students lose these marks constantly, and they lose them in ways that are trivial to fix once someone sits and looks at the drawing rather than the prose.

The recurring losses are consistent across Abu Dhabi cohorts. Axes labelled price and quantity with no units or market named. Curves shifted but not relabelled, so the examiner cannot tell which is which. Equilibrium points unmarked. Areas shaded for welfare loss without being identified in the text. A diagram drawn to illustrate a point the answer never makes. Each of these is a few marks, and together across a paper they routinely account for the gap between two grades.

This is why the diagram folder exists as a separate artefact. Diagrams are drawn by hand in the session, corrected label by label, and kept. A parent can flick through ten of them in two minutes and see whether the labelling has become habitual, which is a faster and more reliable signal than any verbal report. It is also the artefact students resist least, because the improvement is obvious to them as well, and a student who can see one kind of mark being recovered usually becomes more willing to work on the harder kind.

04

Part (a) and part (b): two different jobs on one question

Paper 1 presents extended-response questions in two parts: a 10-mark part asking the student to explain, and a 15-mark part asking them to evaluate or discuss. They reward different things and most students write the same kind of answer twice. The explain part wants definition, theory, a correct diagram and application, delivered cleanly. The evaluate part wants a judgement that is argued, qualified and supported, and a student who simply explains more thoroughly reaches a ceiling well below the available marks.

In Abu Dhabi the pattern is sharpest among students who come from humanities-heavy MYP backgrounds. They write fluent, well-organised prose that narrates economic theory and never commits to a position. The marks for evaluation are awarded for things like weighing short run against long run, naming the assumptions a model depends on, considering who bears a cost, and reaching a conclusion that follows from what was argued rather than from a general sentiment about markets.

The practical method is to score the student's own answers against the published level descriptors with the wording in front of them, then ask them to place the answer themselves and justify the placement. Done eight or ten times, this changes how they write because they stop producing everything they know and start producing what the descriptor rewards. It is slower than being told the rule and it is the only approach that reliably survives into an exam, because under pressure a student falls back on the habit rather than on the advice.

05

The portfolio: three commentaries, dated drafts and the line that does not move

The portfolio is 20 per cent of the Higher Level grade: three commentaries of up to 800 words each, based on published news articles the student selects, each drawing on a different unit of the course and a different key concept, marked by the school against lettered criteria covering diagrams, terminology, application and analysis, the chosen key concept, and evaluation. The current mark allocation per criterion is set out in the subject guide your school holds, and your teacher is the authority on how it is applied.

Most of the available mark is decided by the article and the plan rather than by the writing. An article that reports an outcome without describing a mechanism gives the student nothing to analyse. An article that covers three units at once makes the key concept choice incoherent. Planning all three commentaries together, so that units and concepts do not collide and no single article is asked to carry too much, is an hour of work that protects a fifth of the subject grade.

The boundary is simple and it is stated here deliberately. A tutor teaches the criteria, the article selection, the diagram choice and the 800-word discipline, reads the student's draft, and responds with questions: which key concept is this actually engaging, what does your diagram show that your paragraph does not claim, where is the evaluation as opposed to the description? Drafts are kept dated so the progression is visible in the student's own voice. Finished commentaries are sold in this market; submitting one is a malpractice matter handled by the IB, and the consequence falls on the candidate rather than on the seller.

06

What movement from a 4 to a 6 looks like on paper

Families want to know what progress looks like before the next report, and in economics it has a recognisable sequence. Technical marks move first because they are mechanical: diagram labelling, terminology used precisely rather than loosely, definitions given where the question asks for them. Paper 3 interpretation moves next, within a few weeks, because it is a habit of following a number with a sentence. Evaluation moves last and most slowly, because it requires a student to hold two positions and choose between them in writing.

That sequence is why a family looking only at the total grade concludes in week five that nothing is happening. The artefacts tell a different story: the diagram folder is cleaner, the part (a) answers are collecting their definition and diagram marks reliably, and the part (b) scores have not budged. That is progress in the right order, and the part (b) scores typically follow four to six weeks later once the technical work stops consuming the student's attention.

The table below sets out what each grade band tends to look like on a script, what changes first, and the evidence to look for. It is a guide to reading your own child's work rather than a promise about outcomes. Where none of the described changes appear over eight weeks, the approach is wrong and should be changed rather than extended, which is a conclusion the artefacts make available long before an examination does.

An in-home economics tutor in Abu Dhabi against online, on the artefacts each leaves

In-home economics tuition in Abu Dhabi is a real market and the honest comparison starts with its price. Bestimate's 2026 rate table puts in-home one-to-one at roughly AED 180-350 an hour, with home tutors reported up to AED 500 where the subject is scarce or the journey long. Economics at Higher Level is a scarce subject in this emirate, particularly for Paper 3, so families in peripheral communities are quoted at the top of that range when they are quoted at all.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Higher Level Economics teaching for Abu Dhabi families is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots. The trade is explicit: you give up a person in the room, and the shortlist stops being people willing to drive to Al Samha at 17:30 and becomes economists who mark Paper 3 regularly.

For this subject the format also decides whether the artefacts exist. Diagrams drawn on a shared screen are saved automatically; diagrams drawn in a notebook stay in the notebook. Scored answers with descriptor wording quoted beside them are a file; the same conversation at a kitchen table is a memory. The comparison below is on those practical differences rather than on atmosphere, which is a genuine advantage of being in the room and not one that shows up in a mark.

What to ask your economics teacher, and what ADEK does not tell you

Private schools in Abu Dhabi are overseen by the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and publishes inspection outcomes. That tells you about a school. It will not tell you whether your child's part (b) answers are reaching the top descriptor band, and no inspection rating has ever answered that question for anybody.

The questions that help are the ones your school can answer in a short meeting. Which components is my child losing marks on, rather than which grade did they receive? Has the class completed Paper 3 teaching, and when will it be practised under time? What are the internal deadlines for each of the three commentaries, and which units and key concepts has my child chosen for them? Those four answers let a tutor plan around the school rather than across it.

There is also a rule specific to this emirate. ADEK's professional-ethics expectations for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting paid private tutoring of students enrolled at the teacher's own school, and a teacher tutoring privately is required to hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is granted free of charge for two years. Confirm the current wording with the school or on ADEK's own policy pages. The practical point is that the apparently convenient arrangement carries a risk that falls on the teacher.

09

A schedule that survives Ramadan, mocks and the commentary season

Three things disrupt economics support in Abu Dhabi every year, and all three are predictable. Ramadan compresses school days and moves family routines later, so sessions shift to post-Iftar evenings or weekend mornings. School mock periods remove a fortnight of capacity for written work. Commentary deadlines cluster with Theory of Knowledge and English coursework in the same weeks, which is a problem of total writing capacity rather than of economics.

Because sessions are online there is no travel to renegotiate, so a slot change is a calendar edit. The thing that needs planning is the sequence rather than the timing. Portfolio work belongs in the quieter weeks before the cluster arrives, not inside it. Paper 3 blocks suit the period immediately after mocks, when the student has a scored attempt to react to and the diary has opened again. Scored writing practice continues through everything because it is the slow component.

A practical pattern that works for many Abu Dhabi families: plan all three commentaries early in DP1 so units and key concepts do not collide, write the first one well before its deadline, use the post-mock window in DP2 for Paper 3, and keep one timed written answer a week running throughout. That schedule costs no more than an ad hoc one and avoids the situation that ends most Diploma years badly, which is three deadlines and a weak paper arriving in the same fortnight. Families who set that sequence in writing at the start of DP1 rarely need to buy emergency hours later, and emergency hours are the most expensive kind.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi communities our Higher Level Economics students live in

Sessions are online, so no community is better served than another. What varies is the hour at which a Diploma student can realistically write for an hour, which is what this subject requires.

Al Reem Island

Apartment living with students at several mainland and island schools. Short journeys mean a 17:00 session is feasible, which matters for a subject where the work is writing rather than listening.

Yas Island

Residential and leisure district where afternoon activities dominate. Families here commonly take a single weekend block for commentary work and a shorter weekday slot for scored answers.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A large mainland community with students spread across many schools. Journey times vary street by street, so a fixed online slot removes the most common cause of a cancelled economics session.

Al Samha

On the northern edge of the emirate, where in-home tutoring for a specialist Diploma subject is scarce at any rate. Online delivery is the only route to an economist here rather than a generalist.

Al Manaseer

Established central housing close to several Diploma schools. Earlier slots work, and families often use 16:30 so the evening is free for the 800-word commentary writing this subject needs.

Al Muroor

Inner-city and well connected, with students at central schools. Sessions here rarely need rescheduling for travel, which makes a weekly writing rhythm easier to hold through a term.

Masdar City

A compact community with long bus runs to most Diploma schools. Weekday sessions usually start at 18:00, and the quieter environment suits the extended writing the portfolio requires.

Saadiyat Island

Island living with late school finishes and a bridge crossing afterwards. Economics sessions here sit late in the evening on weekdays, or in a longer weekend block during commentary season.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

The island and central Abu Dhabi

Central Diploma schools with established economics teaching and sizeable Higher Level groups. Requests from this cluster are weighted towards Paper 3 quantitative work and part (b) evaluation, which are the two components a large class finds hardest to coach individually.

  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • International Community School Abu Dhabi

The mainland corridor and the newer communities

  • Raha International School
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy

Schools are named because students we support attend them and to describe the Abu Dhabi Diploma landscape. No affiliation, endorsement or partnership is implied, and programme offerings and inspection outcomes should be verified on ADEK's own school listings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send one answer, not a description

The most useful first message carries one of your child's own part (b) answers, or one Paper 3 attempt, with the mark it received. A message saying economics is not going well cannot be acted on. One mid-band answer tells a tutor which of the five artefacts needs building first and roughly how long it will take.

  2. 02

A free 45-minute trial that produces something

The trial is a working session with no card details required, and it ends with an artefact: a scored answer with reasons, or a corrected diagram set, or a judgement on an article's suitability for a commentary. If it produces only a conversation about potential, you have learned something useful about how the sessions would run.

  3. 03

    Choose the block by component

Paper 3 work, scored writing and portfolio sessions are different purchases. A DP2 student missing a predicted grade usually needs Paper 3 first. A DP1 student with commentary deadlines ahead needs the portfolio planning session, which protects 20 per cent of the grade for an hour or two of work.

  4. 04

Fix the slot and keep the folder

A fixed weekly time in Gulf Standard Time, chosen around the school run and adjusted for Ramadan without a charge. Every session adds to the diagram folder, the scored answers or the dated drafts. The folder is the deliverable, and it should be somewhere a parent can open it without asking.

  5. 05

Audit at week eight against the artefacts

At eight weeks the questions are specific. Is the diagram folder cleaner? Are part (b) scores rising on comparable questions? Do the Paper 3 attempts carry interpretation after every figure? Are the commentary drafts improving in the student's own voice? If the answers are no, the approach changes or the arrangement ends.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Artefacts a non-economist can audit

Five concrete outputs, each inspectable by a parent who has never studied the subject. Economics is the Diploma subject where confident talk most resembles competence, which is exactly why the work should be produced in a form you can look at rather than reported on.

Paper 3 treated as the Higher Level component it is

Thirty per cent of the grade, unique to Higher Level, and usually the last thing a crowded class practises. Sessions treat it as economics rather than arithmetic, with every figure followed by what it implies and every recommendation tied to the data supplied.

Descriptors put in front of the student

Part (b) answers are scored against the published level descriptors with the wording visible, and the student places their own answer and justifies it. That is how evaluation writing changes, as opposed to being told that evaluation is important.

Portfolio planned, not rescued

All three commentaries are planned together so units and key concepts do not collide and no article is asked to carry more than it can. An hour of planning early protects a fifth of the subject grade, which is the best-value hour in the course.

A coursework line stated in advance

Commentary feedback arrives as questions on dated drafts and the text stays the student's own. Finished commentaries are openly sold in this market and the malpractice consequence lands on the candidate, so the version trail is protection as much as evidence.

Market figures with sources, none about us

AED bands on this page name the survey or provider that published them and the year. No success rate, grade-improvement figure or star rating appears anywhere, because none of those could be published here with the number of students, the dates and the method attached.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Which Higher Level Economics artefacts should we be collecting as proof of progress?+

Five, and each proves something different. A scored Paper 3 attempt with the reasoning written out shows whether figures are being interpreted. A folder of hand-drawn diagrams shows technical accuracy. Part (b) answers scored against the published descriptors show whether evaluation is being written rather than described. Three dated commentary drafts show whose thinking moved. A weekly written record shows the sessions have a plan. None predicts a grade; together they tell you within eight weeks whether to continue.

What makes Paper 3 different from the other two economics papers?+

It exists only at Higher Level, carries 30 per cent of the grade, and asks for calculation followed by policy: produce the figure, say what it implies, recommend a response and justify it against the data supplied. Strong essay writers often treat it as arithmetic, produce correct numbers and collect a fraction of the marks because nothing was interpreted. That is why asking a mathematics tutor for help with Paper 3 usually improves the arithmetic and leaves the mark unchanged.

How much do diagrams matter in Higher Level Economics answers?+

Enough that they decide grades. Marks are awarded for a correctly titled diagram with both axes labelled with the right variables, original and new curves distinguished, shifts in the correct direction, equilibria marked and relevant areas identified and referred to in the text. The usual losses are trivial to fix once someone looks at the drawing rather than the prose: unlabelled axes, unrelabelled curves, unmarked equilibria, shaded areas never mentioned in the answer. Across a whole paper these routinely account for a grade.

Our daughter's part (b) answers score lower than her part (a). Why?+

Because the two parts want different things and she is probably writing the same kind of answer twice. The 10-mark part asks her to explain: definition, theory, correct diagram, application. The 15-mark part asks her to evaluate, which means weighing short run against long run, naming the assumptions a model rests on, considering who bears a cost, and reaching a conclusion that follows from the argument. Explaining more thoroughly reaches a ceiling. Scoring her own answers against the published descriptors is what changes it.

How long should each economics commentary be, and how many are there?+

Three commentaries, each up to 800 words, based on published news articles the student finds. Each should draw on a different unit of the course and a different key concept, and the school marks them against lettered criteria covering diagrams, terminology, application and analysis, the key concept and evaluation. Together they carry 20 per cent of the Higher Level grade. The word ceiling is strict and is part of the skill: a commentary that needs 1,200 words to make its point has usually chosen an article with too much in it.

Which commentary criterion do Abu Dhabi students lose marks on first?+

The key concept criterion, more often than any other, because students choose a concept after writing rather than before and then assert the connection in a closing sentence. Diagrams are the next most common loss, usually a correct diagram that the text never actually uses. Evaluation is the third: describing a limitation is not evaluating it. All three are decided at the planning stage, which is why an hour spent on article choice and concept allocation protects more marks than an hour spent editing prose.

Who decides the news article a commentary is based on?+

The student, and that is not a technicality. The selection is part of the assessed work, so a tutor's role is teaching the criteria an article has to satisfy: recent enough, published by a credible outlet, describing a mechanism rather than only an outcome, narrow enough for one unit and one key concept. The student then applies those criteria and brings candidates to be discussed. If a tutor hands over an article, the first and most important decision in the commentary was not the student's.

What evidence shows a Higher Level Economics grade is moving before the next report?+

The sequence is predictable, so look for it in order. Technical marks move first: cleaner diagram labelling and precise terminology, visible within two or three weeks. Paper 3 interpretation follows, with a sentence of implication after each figure. Evaluation moves last, usually four to six weeks later, once technical work stops absorbing attention. A family looking only at the total will conclude in week five that nothing is happening, while the artefacts show progress in exactly the right order.

Does IB Gram offer an in-home economics tutor in Abu Dhabi?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Higher Level Economics teaching for Abu Dhabi families runs one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots. The local in-home market is genuine, with published bands of roughly AED 180-350 an hour and more for scarce subjects, and Higher Level Economics is scarce here. Online delivery replaces a travel radius with a shortlist of economists, including tutors who mark Paper 3 regularly.

How do the quantitative questions in Paper 3 differ from mathematics questions?+

The arithmetic is the easy half. A mathematics question ends when the figure is correct; a Paper 3 question begins there. An elasticity value has to be followed by what it implies for revenue or for who bears a tax. A national income calculation has to be read as a statement about an economy. A policy recommendation has to cite a number from the stimulus rather than a general principle. Students with strong mathematics often compute flawlessly and score mid-band, which is a reading and writing failure rather than a numerical one.

What does Higher Level Economics tuition cost in Abu Dhabi per hour?+

Published bands put qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150-300 an hour and IB specialists at AED 200-450 and above, with in-home one-to-one at about AED 180-350 in Bestimate's 2026 table. Unitors advertises IB tuition from AED 200 and TutorChase publishes AED 270 for its specialist tier; those are their figures, quoted as market context rather than as our price. Ask specifically whether scoring written answers and reading commentary drafts sit inside the hour, because for this subject that is most of the value.

Can economics sessions run after Iftar during Ramadan?+

Yes, and most Abu Dhabi families move them there. School days compress during Ramadan and routines shift later, so post-Iftar evenings and weekend mornings become the practical slots. Because sessions are online there is no travel to rearrange, so the change is a calendar edit rather than a renegotiation, and there is no rescheduling charge for it. The useful planning point is sequence rather than timing: portfolio work belongs in the quieter weeks, and timed written practice continues throughout because it is the slow component.

Is Higher Level Economics worth taking for a business degree in the UAE?+

Frequently yes, and the only reliable confirmation is each university's own admissions page. Many business and finance programmes in the UAE and abroad list economics as preferred rather than required, and some specify a mathematics route instead. Check before DP1 choices are confirmed, because moving level later is disruptive. Note also that no tutor should tell you tuition is required for admission or for Ministry of Education equivalency; that is a claim about a regulatory process rather than about teaching.

Our son writes strong essays and loses marks on data response. What fixes that?+

Making him use the stimulus. Data response rewards claims anchored in the material provided: a figure quoted, a trend named in the units given, a change described with reference to the table rather than to general theory. Students with essay confidence write around the data instead of from it, and the marks for using it go uncollected. The fix is mechanical and quick: every claim in a Paper 2 answer has to point at something in the stimulus, practised under time until it becomes the default.

What if the tutor and our school disagree about an economics answer?+

Your school wins on anything procedural, and that should be said plainly at the start. The teacher sets the internal deadlines, approves the commentary plan and applies the criteria your child is marked against. Where there is a genuine difference of interpretation on an answer, the useful response is to ask the teacher which descriptor their mark reflects, which turns a disagreement into information. A tutor who encourages a student to override a supervisor's guidance on coursework is creating a problem that the student, not the tutor, will carry.

Ask for an artefact before you book a term

The fastest way to judge economics support is to make it produce something. Send one of your child's own part (b) answers or a Paper 3 attempt with the mark it received. The free 45-minute session returns a score against the published descriptors with the reason stated, or a corrected diagram set, or a judgement on whether a chosen article can carry a commentary. No card details are required. If what comes back is a conversation about potential rather than a marked piece of work, you have your answer about how the rest of the term would have gone.
