IB DP Economics SL Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Families looking for an IB DP Economics SL home tutor in Abu Dhabi are usually choosing between quotes without knowing what each one buys. This page prices the work by component instead: the portfolio carries 30 per cent of the Standard Level grade and is the cheapest part to protect, while broad content revision is the most expensive and most duplicative. Teaching runs one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, so nothing in the rate pays for travel.

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Spend by component, because the components are not equally expensive to fix

Economics at Standard Level is examined through two written papers and a portfolio of three commentaries. Paper 1 carries 30 per cent, Paper 2 carries 40 per cent and the portfolio carries 30 per cent, which is higher than the Higher Level equivalent. Those three numbers should decide a budget, and they almost never do. Most Abu Dhabi families buy weekly sessions in whatever the class is currently teaching, which spreads the money evenly across components that respond to paid time very unevenly.

The portfolio is the clearest example. It is 30 per cent of the grade, it has no clock on it, and most of its mark is settled by decisions taken before any writing: which article, which unit, which key concept, which diagram. Four or five hours spread across the deadline term addresses a third of the subject grade. Compare that with broad content revision, which can absorb twenty hours and mostly repeats what the school is already delivering across 150 taught hours.

The second decision that moves a number is format. One-to-one is the most expensive per hour and the only format that can mark one student's essay properly. A pair at the same school and level halves the rate per student and works well for content and for timed practice. A group class is cheaper again and cannot do the one thing most Standard Level economics students need, which is somebody reading their own writing and saying where the marks were available.

The third is scarcity rather than distance. Economics specialists are thinner on the ground in this emirate than science tutors, especially people who mark data response and commentaries regularly. That shows up in quotes as a premium that has nothing to do with travel and does not disappear because you live centrally. Families in Al Shamkha and families in Al Bateen are quoted differently for in-home work because of the journey; both are quoted more for economics than for mathematics because of the subject.

Every AED figure on this page is a published band with the provider or survey and the year named. None of them is our price: tuition is quoted on enquiry after a free 45-minute trial session, with no card details required to book it. Teaching is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots, which means no travel sits inside the rate and the same figure applies wherever in Abu Dhabi you live. Read the component table first if you are deciding what to buy, the calendar section if you are deciding when, and the format table if you are weighing one-to-one against a pair or a group class. The three answers together usually come to a smaller total than the weekly arrangement most families are quoted at the outset.

At a glance

  • Standard Level weightings: Paper 1 at 30 per cent, Paper 2 at 40, portfolio at 30
  • The portfolio is the cheapest third of the grade to protect
  • Format changes the per-student rate more than tutor seniority does
  • Economics carries a scarcity premium in Abu Dhabi, separate from travel
  • Sessions are online and one-to-one, so no travel is priced in
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

What a family needs to buy depends on where the student met the subject, since economics is new to most Diploma students and entirely new to some.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Economics at Standard Level covers four units, from basic concepts through microeconomics and macroeconomics to the global economy, tied together by nine key concepts. Assessment is Paper 1 extended response, Paper 2 data response and a portfolio of three commentaries. There is no Paper 3, which is the Higher Level policy paper, so Standard Level students carry a higher portfolio weighting instead.

In Abu Dhabi, Standard Level Economics is often taken as a sixth subject alongside a heavier package, which affects the budget more than the content does. A student with two Higher Level sciences has little writing capacity left for commentary season, and that collision is the thing most worth planning spending around.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

Individuals and societies builds source handling, research and structured writing against criteria that reward investigation and communication. It does not build diagram work or quantitative market analysis, so students from this route generally write well and lose technical marks. Content hours are rarely what they need; diagram and terminology hours are.

Abu Dhabi continuum students often arrive able to argue and unable to draw. That is cheap to fix, because diagram accuracy is mechanical: a few hours of hand-drawn correction recovers marks across both papers and the portfolio at once, which makes it the best value early purchase for this group.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Edexcel upper secondary

Some students arrive from IGCSE Economics or Business Studies and some from neither. Those with a background know supply and demand and the main macroeconomic indicators from short directive questions. Those without start from nothing, and in a Standard Level class moving at pace the gap opens in the first term rather than the second.

Because Abu Dhabi's British-curriculum sector is large, Standard Level groups routinely mix both types. For a family budgeting, the question to ask the school is whether the class is being taught as though everyone has prior economics. If it is, a student without that background needs a short catch-up block early, which is far cheaper than a rescue in DP2.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Standard Level Economics is usually one line in a wider package, so the notes below say what each companion subject costs in time and attention.

Economics

Standard Level

Paper 1 at 30 per cent, Paper 2 at 40 per cent and the portfolio at 30 per cent. The cheap purchases are diagram accuracy and commentary planning; the expensive and least productive one is broad content revision that duplicates classroom teaching.

Economics

Higher Level

Adds the quantitative policy paper at 30 per cent and reduces the portfolio weighting to 20 per cent. Students considering moving up should know the added component is where Higher Level grades most often slip, and that supporting it costs more because fewer tutors mark it.

Business Management

Standard Level and Higher Level

A frequent companion. Its evaluation style differs from economics, and students who blend the two write business answers in economics papers. Buying command-term work once for both subjects is efficient; buying content twice is not.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

Standard Level

Covers the statistical and graphical handling that economics data response rewards. Students on this route rarely need separate quantitative support for Standard Level economics, which removes a category of spend.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

Standard Level

Strong algebra, less applied interpretation. For Standard Level economics this is adequate, since there is no policy paper, and families should resist being sold quantitative hours the course does not examine at this level.

Geography

Standard Level and Higher Level

Shares trade, development and sustainability material with the global economy unit. Case evidence can be reused across both, which is a genuine saving if the revision is planned rather than accidental.

Global Politics

Standard Level

Overlaps on trade, integration and development, and rewards contested argument. Evaluation practice bought for one subject transfers to the other, so the writing block is worth buying once.

English A: Language and Literature

Standard Level and Higher Level

Its coursework deadlines collide with commentary deadlines in most Abu Dhabi schools. Check the English calendar before booking economics hours into those weeks, because the constraint will be writing capacity rather than understanding.

Psychology

Standard Level

Another subject with heavy written demands and a different evaluation convention. Students carrying economics, psychology and English together should expect their bottleneck to be time in term two rather than any single subject's difficulty.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Lands in the same weeks as the commentary deadlines. Budgeting economics sessions into that fortnight is the most common planning mistake, and the portfolio is the component that suffers because it has no external deadline to force it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats at three different costs per student. The cheapest format that can do the job you need is the right one, and for commentary marking that is one-to-one.

Commentary block, scoped to the deadlines

Four to five sessions across the deadline term covering article selection criteria, unit and key concept allocation across all three commentaries, diagram choice and the 800-word discipline, then feedback on the student's own dated drafts. At published market bands this is the cheapest route to protecting 30 per cent of the Standard Level grade.

  • All three commentaries planned together, not one at a time
  • Article suitability taught as criteria the student applies
  • Drafts read and returned with questions, dated each time
  • Priced as a block with an end point, not as an open arrangement

Marked writing before mocks

Weekly timed answers marked against the published level descriptors in the four to six weeks before mocks or the May session. Marking takes a tutor roughly as long as teaching, so this format is only honest at a rate that includes it. The deliverable is a folder in which the tenth answer is better than the first.

  • One timed Paper 1 or Paper 2 answer each week
  • Marked against published descriptors, with the reason stated
  • Diagram labelling corrected on every answer
  • Ends on a fixed date rather than renewing by default

Paired sessions for two students at the same level

Two students from the same school and level sharing a session, which roughly halves the rate each family pays. It works for content, diagram practice and timed attempts. It does not work for marking one student's commentary draft properly, so most families who use it buy a small number of individual hours alongside.

  • Rate per student falls sharply against one-to-one
  • Suits content, diagrams and timed practice
  • Not suitable for individual commentary draft work
  • Both families should agree the pace before the first session

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The portfolio is 30 per cent at Standard Level and the cheapest third to protect

Standard Level Economics has no Paper 3, so the portfolio carries more weight here than at Higher Level: 30 per cent of the grade for three commentaries of up to 800 words each, based on articles the student finds, each engaging a different unit and a different key concept. It is marked by the school against lettered criteria covering diagrams, terminology, application and analysis, the key concept and evaluation, with the current mark allocation set out in the subject guide the school holds.

What makes it cheap to protect is that most of the mark is decided before the writing. An article reporting only an outcome gives nothing to analyse. An article spanning three units makes the key concept choice incoherent. A diagram chosen after the paragraphs are written usually illustrates nothing the text claims. Planning all three commentaries together takes an hour or two and removes the most common causes of a low mark across a third of the subject grade.

The table below prices the components against the hours families typically buy for each, using the published market bands set out later on this page. The last column is the uncomfortable one: it asks what share of the grade each purchase can reach. Broad content revision scores badly there not because content does not matter, but because the school is already delivering 150 taught hours of it and a second delivery rarely adds marks. Read the last column before the price column, because a cheap hour aimed at nothing is still a wasted hour.

Counting backwards from the examination session, with the spend attached

Nobody in this market publishes a calendar, which is why families buy support reactively and pay more for it. The sequence below counts backwards from the examination session UAE schools sit in May, using the milestones your own school sets rather than published dates. IB session and results dates are not restated here: they should be confirmed with your school's Diploma coordinator or on ibo.org, because a date quoted from a tutoring website is not a source.

Read it as a spending plan rather than a revision plan. Each row names what is worth buying in that window and what it costs at published market bands. The pattern it produces is front-loaded and cheap: planning and diagram work early, when hours are inexpensive and nothing is urgent, and a short marked-writing block late, when the student has mock results to react to. Emergency purchases in the final six weeks are the most expensive hours in the whole course and buy the least.

One further point about timing. Commentary deadlines in most Abu Dhabi schools fall in the same weeks as Theory of Knowledge and English coursework, so the constraint in that fortnight is total writing capacity rather than economics understanding. Buying economics hours into that collision tends to produce a stressed student and a rushed commentary. Buying them four weeks earlier costs the same and works. Ask your Diploma coordinator for the internal deadline calendar in September rather than discovering it in February, since the whole plan hangs off those dates.

One-to-one, a pair or a group: what each costs per student

Format changes the per-student cost more than tutor seniority does, and the three formats are not interchangeable. One-to-one is the only arrangement in which a tutor reads one student's commentary draft and says where the marks were available. A pair at the same school and level roughly halves what each family pays and handles content, diagrams and timed practice perfectly well. A group class is cheaper again and is a content delivery mechanism.

The mistake families make in both directions is predictable. Some pay one-to-one rates for content a group session could deliver, which is buying the most expensive format for the least demanding job. Others buy a group class for a student whose problem is that nobody has ever marked their writing, and then conclude after a term that tutoring does not work. The question to ask is not which format is better but which one can do the specific job the component needs.

The table compares them on that basis. Note the last column: what each format cannot do. A group class cannot mark thirty individual commentary drafts, however good the teacher is, which is the same constraint your school's economics teacher is working under. That constraint is the actual reason to pay for one-to-one hours, and it is worth paying for precisely and sparingly rather than weekly for two years. A pair arrangement only works where both students are genuinely at the same level, so agree the pace between the two families before the first session rather than after it.

Scarcity, not distance, sets the economics rate in this emirate

Travel explains why two Abu Dhabi families are quoted differently for the same in-home lesson. It does not explain why economics costs more than mathematics for both of them. The reason is supply: there are fewer Diploma economics specialists in this emirate than science or mathematics tutors, and fewer still who regularly mark data response and commentaries against the published criteria. A scarce subject commands a premium that a central address does not remove.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Standard Level Economics teaching for Abu Dhabi families is delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time slots. On cost that has two consequences worth stating plainly. No travel sits inside the rate, so a family in Al Shamkha pays what a family in Al Bateen pays. And the supply constraint loosens, because the shortlist is economists who teach this syllabus rather than economists who will drive to your community at 17:30.

That second point is the one that matters most for this subject. In an in-home arrangement the scarcity and the travel multiply: the few available specialists take the shortest journeys first, and in the six weeks before mocks the peripheral communities are quoted highest and served last. Families in Al Falah, Al Shamkha and Al Samha regularly find the person who covered DP1 is unavailable exactly when DP2 matters. Removing distance from the equation removes that failure mode along with the premium attached to it.

05

What you are paying a person to do that your school cannot

Your school delivers 150 taught hours of Standard Level Economics, sets the internal commentary deadlines, approves the portfolio plan and applies the criteria your child is marked against. Paying for a second delivery of that content is the default purchase and the weakest one. The useful question is which jobs are structurally impossible for a teacher with several classes, because those are the jobs a paid hour genuinely adds something to.

Three qualify. Reading one student's commentary draft closely and asking the questions that send them back to it is the first: a teacher with thirty portfolio drafts cannot do it more than once per commentary, however willing they are. Marking one student's timed answer every week against the descriptors is the second. Diagnosing why a particular student's evaluation never reaches the upper descriptors is the third, because it requires looking at that student's writing repeatedly rather than at the class's.

Content coverage qualifies only in narrow cases: a mid-year arrival in Abu Dhabi, an extended absence, a change of teacher mid-unit, or a student who began the course with no economics background in a class taught as though everyone had one. Those gaps are real and cheap to close because they are specific. A family that identifies one and buys three hours has spent well. A family that buys twenty hours of general revision has paid twice for the same teaching. The test for any content hour is whether a school clinic your child can already attend would have covered it.

06

Marking is the product, so ask what an hour of it produces

In a coursework-and-essay subject, the thing you are actually buying is somebody's reading time. Marking a Paper 1 part (b) answer properly takes a tutor roughly as long as teaching the topic would: read it, place it against the descriptors, identify which available marks were not claimed and why, then write that in a form the student can act on. An hourly rate priced to exclude that will exclude it, and the student will produce less writing as a result, which is the opposite of what the subject needs.

So ask the question directly before booking: if my child writes one answer a week, is it marked inside the rate, and what do we receive? A clear answer sounds like this: the answer comes back with the descriptor level and the reason, the uncollected marks named, and one instruction for the next attempt. A vague answer about ongoing feedback usually means marking happens verbally in the next session if time allows, which is a different and cheaper product.

The same applies to commentary drafts. Reading an 800-word commentary against five criteria takes real time, and some providers bill per draft while others include two and charge for the third. Neither is unreasonable; what is unreasonable is finding out in the deadline week. Get it in writing, and treat a provider who cannot say how many drafts are included as having answered the question. The number that matters is not the hourly rate but the cost of getting one piece of writing read properly three times.

07

The invoice questions for a coursework-heavy subject

Some of these apply to any tutoring and some are specific to a subject with three deadlines inside it. Is the rate per hour or per session, and how long is a session? Is marking of timed answers included? How many commentary drafts does the block cover, and what is charged for an extra one? Does a package expire at the end of term, and do unused sessions carry forward? Is the commentary block priced differently from weekly teaching? What is the cancellation window, and does a late cancellation lapse or roll over?

On tax the honest answer is narrow: ask whether the quoted price includes VAT and get it in writing. This page does not state the UAE VAT treatment of tuition fees, because doing so would need a Federal Tax Authority citation rather than a confident sentence, and more than one page in this market asserts a treatment without one. The protection is the same either way, which is a written quote that says whether the number is inclusive.

Where something is described as free, check the condition on the same screen as the word. The trial here is a 45-minute working session with no card details required, and that is the whole condition. Elsewhere, a free assessment may require a package purchase before the findings are released, or a free first lesson may be conditional on booking a month. Those are legitimate commercial choices and they are only a problem when the condition appears after the decision.

08

Equivalency, universities and why the economics grade is being chased

Part of the pressure behind a Standard Level Economics grade in Abu Dhabi is what comes after it. For families intending to study in the UAE, Ministry of Education equivalency of the school certificate is the process that matters, and it is worth understanding before paying anyone to chase a grade for the wrong reason. Equivalency is a Ministry process. It is not something a tutoring provider performs, guarantees or accelerates, and anyone suggesting otherwise is describing a regulatory process they do not operate.

For the British track the published requirements are specific: five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education not counted among the five, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. For the American track, English proficiency is evidenced by IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, with mathematics requiring at least 450 in SAT Math.

For the IB there is no points threshold published here, because none has been read on a Ministry source. Any figure quoted at you for IB equivalency should be checked on moe.gov.ae or with the emirate's attestation channel rather than taken from a tutoring page, including this one. One ranking competitor in this market already publishes the wrong subject count for the British track, which is a useful reminder that confident numbers on tutoring websites are not sources. University admission requirements are a separate matter again, and each programme publishes its own.

09

When to stop paying, and what the last invoice should buy

Every tutoring arrangement should have a point at which it ends, and economics gives you clear signals. Stop when the component you bought the hours for has improved and the remaining weakness is in a different component that needs a different purchase. Stop when the student can place their own answer against the descriptors and say what is missing, because at that point they can practise without paying. Stop when the portfolio is submitted and the remaining work is revision the school is already running clinics for.

There is also a harder signal. If eight weeks of marked writing have produced no change in descriptor level on comparable questions, more of the same will not help. The right response is a different approach or a different tutor, not additional hours, and a provider who proposes additional hours as the first answer is not reading the evidence. Families in this market often double the spend at precisely the moment the evidence says to change direction.

The last invoice is worth spending deliberately. A single session that produces a written summary of what remains weak, which components it affects and what the student should practise without paying is better value than three more sessions of general revision. Ask for that explicitly. A provider who treats the end of an arrangement as a thing to be managed rather than planned has told you something about the arrangement itself. Set the review date when the block is agreed, so that stopping is a decision already scheduled rather than a conversation somebody has to start.

Where we tutor

How quotes vary across Abu Dhabi, and why ours does not

Our sessions are online, so the rate is the same wherever you live. These notes explain what drives the variation you will see in local in-home quotes, which is useful context when comparing offers.

Al Raha Beach

On the airport corridor with several Diploma schools nearby. In-home quotes here sit mid-range for travel, but economics specialists are still scarce, so the subject premium applies regardless of the short journey.

Khalifa City

Central to the mainland school cluster, which keeps travel costs down in local quotes. Families here most often compare an in-home economics rate with an online one and find the gap is mostly subject scarcity.

Mussafah

Heavy traffic in both directions at pick-up time. In-home tutors quoting for Mussafah usually add a travel allowance or insist on a two-hour minimum, which changes the real cost per useful hour.

Al Shamkha

A long run from the central schools and the clearest example of the travel premium in this emirate. Economics at Diploma level is scarce enough here that online delivery is often the only route to a specialist.

Al Zahiyah

Dense central housing where journeys are short and activity schedules are full. Quotes here are close to a tutor's base rate, so the comparison between providers is cleaner than elsewhere.

Al Falah

A newer mainland community with long bus runs. Families here commonly buy a weekend block rather than two weekday evenings, which also reduces the number of sessions lost to cancellations.

Yas Island

Residential and leisure district where afternoons fill with activities. Commentary writing needs a quiet hour, so families often schedule economics in a single weekend morning during deadline season.

Al Bateen

Established and close to central schools, with short journeys. Even here, economics quotes run above mathematics and science quotes, which is the subject scarcity rather than the distance.

School ecosystem

Central Abu Dhabi and the island schools

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say the budget and the component

Advice improves when both are on the table. A family with four sessions to spend should be told which four, and that answer is different from a plan for a term. If the student's weakness is the portfolio, the answer is a planning hour and draft feedback, which is a smaller purchase than most families arrive expecting.

  2. 02

A free 45-minute trial with no card required

A working session rather than a consultation that withholds its findings. The student attempts an answer or brings a commentary article, and you are told which rows of the component table apply, with an estimate of hours. If the honest answer is fewer hours than you planned, that is what you are told.

  3. 03

Agree what the rate includes, in writing

Specifically: whether marking timed answers is inside the hour, how many commentary drafts the block covers, what an extra draft costs, whether the figure includes VAT, and what happens to unused sessions. Every one of those has changed somebody's invoice in this market, usually in the deadline week.

  4. 04

Buy the block, not the subscription

Commentary support is scoped to the school's deadlines. Marked writing runs four to six weeks before mocks and ends. Paired sessions are available where two students at the same level want content and timed practice. Nothing renews by default, and a review date is set when the block is agreed.

  5. 05

    Close the arrangement deliberately

The final session should produce a written summary: what remains weak, which components it affects, and what the student can practise without paying. That is better value than three more hours of general revision, and asking for it tells you quickly how a provider thinks about the end of an engagement.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Priced against the component weightings

Paper 1 is 30 per cent, Paper 2 is 40 and the portfolio is 30 at Standard Level. Spending is planned against those figures rather than against whatever the class is currently teaching, which is how an evenly spread budget ends up reaching the least responsive components.

The cheapest third of the grade named

The portfolio carries 30 per cent and most of its mark is decided at the planning stage. An hour or two spent allocating units, key concepts and articles across all three commentaries is the best-value purchase in the course, and it is the one most providers never mention.

Every figure sourced

Each AED band on this page names the provider or survey that published it and the year. Three of the most visible pages in this market publish no price at all and two quote in dollars, so a sourced band in dirhams is the minimum a parent should have before comparing offers.

Marking stated as part of the rate

In an essay and coursework subject the product is reading time. Whether marking of timed answers and commentary drafts sits inside the hour is the single question that decides whether a quote is comparable, and it is asked and answered before the first session.

The free options named

School clinics, the teacher's own guidance on the portfolio plan, the component breakdown behind a grade and a study group marking each other's answers all cost nothing. Paid hours are worth buying for what those cannot do, and a page that hides them is selling rather than advising.

No claims about our own results

No success rate, no average grade movement, no star rating. Equivalency is described and attributed to its source rather than presented as something we perform, and no IB points threshold is published here because none has been read on a Ministry source.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How much should we expect to spend on Standard Level Economics across two years in Abu Dhabi?+

Less than most families assume, if it is spent by component. Planning all three commentaries plus draft feedback runs roughly AED 600-1,800 at published bands and reaches the 30 per cent portfolio. Diagram accuracy adds AED 300-900. A four to six week marked-writing block before mocks is AED 600-1,800. That is a complete plan for well under the cost of two years of weekly sessions, which at Bestimate's 2026 monthly estimates of AED 600-1,200 would run into five figures across the Diploma.

Why is the portfolio the cheapest part of the economics grade to protect?+

Because most of its mark is decided before any writing, by choices that take an hour to get right. Which article, which unit, which key concept and which diagram are settled at the planning stage, and a poor choice there caps the mark whatever the prose does later. The portfolio is 30 per cent of the Standard Level grade and has no clock on it, so the work can be done calmly in term time. Planning all three together also stops units and concepts colliding, which is a common and entirely avoidable loss.

Is it cheaper to buy economics help in DP1 or to wait for DP2 mock results?+

Cheaper in DP1, and by a wide margin. Early hours are planning hours: commentary allocation, diagram accuracy, a catch-up block if the student started with no economics. They are short, they are not urgent, and they protect components rather than rescuing them. Hours bought in the final six weeks before the session are the most expensive in the course, because the student has no time to practise what is taught and the available tutors are at their most committed. Waiting for mocks is reasonable only if nothing specific is already wrong.

What should an hour of economics essay marking actually produce?+

A specific document rather than encouragement. The answer should come back with the descriptor level it reaches, the reason for that placement, the available marks that were not claimed and why, the diagram corrected label by label, and one instruction for the next attempt. If what arrives is a score and a sentence of praise, the marking has not happened. Ask what marking produces before booking, because reading time is the product in this subject and it is also the thing most easily dropped from a cheap hour.

Are economics group classes in Abu Dhabi good value at Standard Level?+

For content, structured revision and keeping pace, yes, and the published group rates in this market start well below one-to-one. For the thing most Standard Level students actually need, which is somebody reading their own writing, no. A group teacher cannot mark thirty commentary drafts closely, which is the same constraint your school's economics teacher works under. The efficient combination is group or self-directed work for content with a small number of individual hours for marking and the portfolio.

Why do economics tutors quote more than science tutors in this emirate?+

Supply. There are fewer Diploma economics specialists in Abu Dhabi than science or mathematics tutors, and fewer again who regularly mark data response and commentaries against the published criteria. That premium is about scarcity rather than travel, so it does not disappear because you live centrally. In-home arrangements compound it, because the few available specialists take the shortest journeys first and the peripheral communities are quoted highest and served last in the weeks before mocks.

Does the Standard Level portfolio cost the same to support as the Higher Level one?+

Roughly the same in hours and more valuable at Standard Level. Both involve three commentaries of up to 800 words marked against the same lettered criteria, so the work a tutor does is comparable. The difference is weighting: the portfolio is 30 per cent of a Standard Level grade and 20 per cent at Higher Level, because Higher Level students also sit the policy paper. Pound for pound, commentary support buys more of the final grade for a Standard Level student than for a Higher Level one.

Should we pay for help choosing the commentary articles?+

Pay for the criteria, not for the choice. The selection is part of the assessed work, so a tutor teaches what an article must satisfy: recent enough, from a credible outlet, describing a mechanism rather than only an outcome, and narrow enough for one unit and one key concept. The student then brings candidates and the discussion is about whether each one meets the criteria. If a tutor simply hands over an article, the first and most consequential decision in the commentary stopped being the student's.

Do private tutors in Abu Dhabi need a permit, and does that affect the price?+

A permit is required and it is free, so it should not affect the price. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, with eligibility covering registered teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted at you. Ask; the answer is checkable.

Does Economics count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Equivalency is assessed on the certificate rather than on one subject, and the published rules differ by curriculum. For the British track, five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one Advanced Level at E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at E. For the American track, English via IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT 450 in reading and writing, with SAT Math at 450 or above. For the IB, no points threshold is published here because none has been read on a Ministry source; check moe.gov.ae or the attestation channel.

Is it worth paying for mock marking before the May session?+

Yes, if the marking produces descriptor-level reasoning rather than a score, and if there is enough time left to act on it. A marked mock that names the uncollected marks and gives one instruction per component is the highest-value single purchase in DP2, because it directs everything that follows. A mock returned with a grade and general advice is worth little at any price. Two to three hours is usually enough for a full Standard Level paper set, which at published bands is a modest and well-targeted spend.

If we can only afford four sessions, what should they be spent on?+

If the portfolio is unsubmitted: one session planning all three commentaries, two on draft feedback, one on diagram accuracy. That sequence reaches 30 per cent of the grade and the technical marks across both papers. If the portfolio is already in: one session marking a timed Paper 2 data response, one on the losses it reveals, one marking a Paper 1 part (b), one on evaluation structure. Four sessions spent on general content revision will reach almost nothing, because the school is already delivering that.

Do you charge extra for reading an additional commentary draft?+

Ask this of any provider, including us, and get the answer in writing before the block starts. Reading an 800-word commentary against five criteria takes real time, so some providers include two drafts and charge for a third while others price per draft. Neither practice is unreasonable; discovering the policy in deadline week is. The same applies to whether the block covers all three commentaries or one, because a quote covering a single commentary looks competitive next to one covering the whole portfolio.

How do we avoid paying for economics content the school is already teaching?+

Ask the school two questions first: which components is my child losing marks on, and where is the class against the scheme of work. Then buy only what a teacher with several classes structurally cannot provide, which is close reading of one student's drafts, weekly marking of one student's timed answers, and diagnosis of why that student's evaluation does not reach the upper descriptors. Content hours are worth buying only for a specific gap: an absence, a mid-year arrival, a change of teacher, or no prior economics in a class taught as though everyone has it.

When should we stop paying for economics support?+

When the component you bought the hours for has improved and the remaining weakness needs a different purchase. When the student can place their own answer against the descriptors and say what is missing, because they can then practise unpaid. When the portfolio is submitted and what remains is revision the school runs clinics for. And when eight weeks of marked writing have produced no change in descriptor level on comparable questions, at which point the answer is a different approach rather than more hours.

Price the components before you price the hours

Send the last economics answer your child wrote and say what you are prepared to spend. The free 45-minute session identifies which component is losing the marks, says which rows of the spending plan actually apply, and estimates the hours each would take. No card details are required to book it. If the conclusion is one planning hour and four marked answers rather than two years of weekly sessions, you will have that in writing and can take it to any provider in Abu Dhabi for comparison.
