IGCSE Home Tutor in Al Raha Gardens

A search for an IGCSE home tutor in Al Raha Gardens is a search for someone who can say exactly where your child's marks are going. Not the subject, the component: the multiple-choice paper, the theory paper, the practical paper, the specific question type that keeps costing three marks. This page sets that out subject by subject, then matches your child to a specialist who teaches that paper, one to one on live video.

IB & IGCSE in Al Raha Gardens

The question is which component, not which subject

A report card says Chemistry, grade 6. That is not a diagnosis. Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry is examined through three components with different weightings: a multiple-choice paper at thirty per cent, a theory paper at fifty, and either a practical test or the alternative to practical at twenty. A student can be strong on two and weak on one, and the single grade hides which. The remedy for each is different.

That structure is the most useful thing a parent can learn about the British pathway, because it converts a vague worry into a specific question. Which component is costing the marks? For most students, the answer is stable across two years, which means it can be identified in one session with a marked paper and then worked on deliberately rather than guessed at across a term of general revision.

The second useful fact is that mark losses are patterned by subject rather than random. In Mathematics they cluster in reverse percentages, similar shapes, bounds and probability without replacement. In Biology they cluster in terminology precision. In Physics they cluster in unit prefixes and rearranged equations. In English they cluster in answering the wrong task well. Each of those is procedural and each can be removed in weeks rather than months, which is the single most encouraging fact available to a family that has just read a disappointing report.

Al Raha Gardens has a local wrinkle worth naming on a page about IGCSE specifically. The school at the centre of this community runs the IB continuum rather than the British pathway, so families here wanting IGCSE commute out, mostly towards Khalifa City, Al Bateen and Al Mushrif. That means an Al Raha Gardens street can contain Middle Years students and Year 11 IGCSE students who have never shared a classroom, and a neighbour's tutor recommendation is frequently a recommendation for a different assessment system entirely.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, or anywhere else in the UAE. In-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. What we deliver to Al Raha Gardens is one-to-one teaching over live video, matched by syllabus code and component, with your child's own school material on screen. In-home visits in Abu Dhabi are quoted in the market at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel, and that comparison is addressed later on this page.

What follows is subject-level detail: the mathematics topics that reliably cost marks, the science components and where each loses them, how the two boards handle practical work differently, what English mark schemes actually reward, the command terms that decide answers, and how to use past papers so they teach something rather than simply producing a score. Every figure carries the source it came from and the month it was read, because a number without a source is worth nothing to a parent weighing a quote.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The British pathway has three stages and the subject-level work differs sharply across them. Specification detail matters most in the examined years, but the fluency that makes it possible is built earlier.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3, Years 7 to 9

Where algebraic manipulation, scientific notation, unit handling and paragraph construction are built. None of it is examined, which is why it is skipped, and all of it is assumed by the IGCSE specifications. A Year 10 student who cannot rearrange an equation confidently spends the first examined term relearning Year 8 instead of starting the course.

Al Raha Gardens is a villa community with short runs to the Khalifa City and Al Raha Beach schools, so Key Stage 3 students are commonly home by 15:15 with the lightest workload in the house. Two short sessions a week on fundamentals at this stage is the cheapest intervention in the pathway and the least likely to be bought.

Year 10Ages 14-15 · Year 10

IGCSE year one

Content coverage begins and the tier is provisionally decided. Subject-specific habits form here: shown working in mathematics, precise terminology in biology, unit discipline in physics and chemistry. A habit formed badly in Year 10 is examined in Year 11, and habits are harder to change than facts are to learn.

Year 10 students in Al Raha Gardens have room in the week, which is the argument for starting here rather than in the spring of Year 11. One weekly session on the specific component that is already weak removes the panic purchase later, and it is the only point at which the Core or Extended tier decision can still realistically change.

Year 11Ages 15-16 · Year 11

IGCSE examination year

Three components per science, two papers in mathematics, coursework where a specification includes it, and papers in the June or November series for UAE candidates. The grade is decided by component technique at least as much as by knowledge, and the student who knows the content but misreads command terms loses marks in every paper equally.

Al Raha Gardens Year 11 students commuting to Khalifa City or Al Mushrif are commonly home between 15:15 and 16:00. Schools often release students during mock season, which creates the one daytime window of the year, and that fortnight is when a marked script is freshest and diagnosis is most accurate.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below gives the component structure and the specific place marks are lost. Request a tutor by subject and component together; that is what makes a match useful rather than merely available.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 · Pearson 4MA1

Two written papers, no coursework, so the whole grade rests on timed performance. The recurring losses are reverse percentages, similar shape scale factors applied to area and volume, upper and lower bounds, and probability without replacement. All four are procedural and removable in one or two weeks each.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1

Cambridge splits thirty per cent multiple choice, fifty per cent theory and twenty per cent practical. Marks go on unit prefixes, equation rearrangement under time pressure and reading an instrument scale, rather than on failing to understand the physics itself.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1

The same Cambridge component split. Moles arithmetic written without units, ionic equations with unbalanced charges, and the qualitative analysis tables account for most dropped marks. The analysis tables in particular reward memorisation and almost nobody drills them deliberately.

Biology

Cambridge 0610 · Pearson 4BI1

The highest-volume specification in the sciences and the one where wording costs most. A mark scheme wanting a named process rejects a fluent paraphrase. Short timed recall on terminology, repeated weekly, delivers more than any amount of re-reading or highlighting.

Combined and Coordinated Science

Cambridge 0653 and 0654 · Pearson 4SD0

Three sciences compressed into one or two grades. The difficulty is breadth, not depth, and the loss is unseen topics rather than misunderstood ones. Working systematically through the specification checklist is the approach that works, unglamorous as it sounds.

English Language

Cambridge 0500 or 0990 · Pearson 4EA1

Cambridge splits evenly between a reading paper and a directed writing and composition paper. Students lose marks by writing well and answering the wrong task: wrong form, wrong audience, wrong register. Fifteen minutes of taught planning is worth more than any additional reading.

English Literature

Cambridge 0475 or 0992 · Pearson 4ET1

Quotation accuracy and a usable essay structure decide this grade more than interpretive flair. Students who learn six short quotations per text with a point attached to each outperform students who have read more widely and can quote nothing precisely.

Economics and Business

Cambridge 0455 and 0450 · Pearson 4EC1 and 4BS1

A labelled diagram earns credit before prose is read, which makes diagram accuracy the most reliably available mark in both subjects. Definition precision is the slower half: it is recall, so it needs spacing across months rather than a late push.

Computer Science and ICT

Cambridge 0478 and 0417 · Pearson 4IT1

Theory papers reward exact terminology; trace tables and pseudocode conventions are examinable skills distinct from writing working code. The practical or project component carries an internal deadline that should drive the whole autumn rather than compete with revision for leftover hours.

Arabic

Cambridge 0508 first language · 0544 foreign language

Mandatory alongside the licensed curriculum in UAE private schools, with separate provision for Arab and non-Arab students. Because it runs all year rather than peaking, regular short oral and written practice beats an exam-term intensive more clearly here than in any other subject.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, chosen by the component that is failing rather than by the subject on the report. A mismatch here is how families buy hours that feel productive and change nothing.

Component-targeted weekly one-to-one

One subject, one named component, the same tutor weekly. If the theory paper is the problem, the sessions work on extended written answers and command terms. If the multiple-choice paper is the problem, they work on precision and elimination under time pressure. Those are different activities and conflating them wastes the hour.

  • Targets the multiple-choice, theory or practical component specifically
  • Works from the student's own marked papers and school scheme of work
  • 60 or 90 minutes, evening and weekend slots available
  • Saved notes and worked answers after each session

Terminology and recall drilling

Short, high-frequency sessions aimed at the subjects where wording is the whole grade: Biology especially, plus the definition-heavy parts of Economics, Business and Geography. Timed recall with immediate correction, repeated weekly. Unglamorous, measurable and the single most effective thing available in high-volume subjects.

  • Short sessions, high frequency, timed recall with immediate marking
  • Built from the specification's own wording, not a revision guide's
  • A running list of terms the student has repeatedly produced imprecisely
  • Works best twice a week rather than once

Past-paper clinic

Timed sections, marked against the official scheme with the student present, with every lost mark classified. The point is not to accumulate scores but to produce an error list and then shrink it. This is the format that converts knowledge into marks, and it is almost always what a Year 11 student in difficulty actually needs.

  • One timed section at a time, not whole papers for a score
  • Marked aloud against the official scheme with the student
  • Every lost mark classified: content, command term, working, timing
  • Papers come from the school and the board, never from a tutor's archive

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Raha Gardens

01

What an IGCSE home tutor in Al Raha Gardens is actually being asked to fix

  • A grade is not a diagnosis; a component and an error type are
  • Send the marked paper, not a description of the problem
  • Market in-home rates carry travel into the hour; online does not
  • Component-level needs require component-level teachers

Families here usually arrive with a grade and a feeling. The job of a first session is to convert that into a component and an error type, because those are the only things a tutor can work on. A grade 6 in Chemistry might mean a weak multiple-choice paper, a theory paper where extended answers lose marks on command terms, or a practical component nobody has rehearsed. Three different fixes.

The conversion is quick if the right material is to hand. Send the most recent marked paper rather than a description. Within twenty minutes a specialist can usually say whether the losses cluster in one topic, in one command term, in unshown working, or in the final questions of every paper, which is a pacing signal. That classification is worth more than the first four hours of general tutoring.

On format, we should be direct. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. In-home one-to-one visits in Abu Dhabi are quoted across the market at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel priced in, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. Al Raha Gardens is inland and well connected, so the travel loading here is lower than for the islands, but it is still a loading.

What online genuinely changes for a subject-led engagement is who teaches. A student who needs the alternative to practical in Physics rehearsed needs somebody who has taught that component, not somebody who teaches science and lives nearby. Removing the drive widens the pool from whoever is within range at the one convenient hour to every specialist free that evening.

02

Mathematics: the topics that reliably cost marks

IGCSE mathematics has no coursework with either board, so two timed papers carry the entire grade. That makes the subject unusually diagnosable: everything a student can do and cannot do appears in a marked paper, and the pattern repeats. Across both boards and both upper tiers, a short list of topics accounts for a disproportionate share of dropped marks.

Reverse percentages lead it. A student is given a post-increase figure and multiplies rather than divides, producing a plausible number and losing every mark. Similar shapes follow: length, area and volume scale by different powers of the ratio and the length factor gets used for all three. Upper and lower bounds appears regularly and is typically taught once, in Year 10, and never revisited.

Then there is the habit category, which is larger than the topic category. Multi-stage questions award method marks for visible steps, so a student who computes mentally and writes a single line collects the answer mark and forfeits the rest. On a paper with several such questions, that habit alone can cost a grade boundary, and it is the easiest item on this list to change.

The table below pairs each with the fix and a realistic timescale. The timescales matter: a parent deciding whether eight weeks is enough should be able to see that four of these can be removed inside that window and that shown-working discipline takes longer because it is a habit rather than a piece of knowledge.

IGCSE MATHEMATICS: THE RECURRING LOSSES AND HOW LONG EACH TAKES TO FIX

03

The three sciences: components, weightings and where each loses marks

Cambridge examines each separate IGCSE science through three components: a multiple-choice paper at thirty per cent, a theory paper at fifty, and a practical component at twenty, taken as either the practical test or the alternative to practical. Knowing those three numbers changes revision planning immediately, because fifty per cent of the grade sits in extended written answers and most students spend most of their revision on recall.

Each component fails in its own way. The multiple-choice paper punishes imprecision: two options are close, the student knows the topic broadly and picks the plausible one. Elimination technique and precise definitions fix that, and both are drillable. The theory paper punishes command-term misreading, where a competent description answers an explain question and scores little. The practical component punishes never having rehearsed its conventions.

Pearson International GCSE takes a different structural route, examining each science through two written papers with practical skills assessed inside them rather than through a separate practical component. The weightings are published by the board and worth reading on the specification page rather than taking from any third party, including this one. The teaching consequence is similar: method and analysis carry the marks, not laboratory dexterity.

The practical reading of all this is that a science grade should never be worked on as a whole. Identify the component, then work on that component's specific failure mode. A student losing marks on the multiple-choice paper and a student losing them on extended theory answers need different sessions, and a tutor who teaches both the same way is teaching to the subject rather than to the student.

04

Practical science assessed two ways, and what that means for online lessons

  • Both boards assess reasoning about experiments, not bench dexterity
  • Table headers without units and lines through every point are standard losses
  • Specific systematic error sources, never human error, score the marks
  • Missing school practical work is a conversation with the school, not a tutor

This is the fair objection to online science tutoring and it deserves a straight answer rather than a dismissal. A tutor on video cannot run a titration alongside your child. What a tutor on video can do is teach what the practical components actually assess, which in both boards is method and analysis rather than manual dexterity.

Cambridge's alternative to practical tests experimental design, reading instruments, recording to appropriate precision, plotting, and identifying sources of error. Every one of those is a paper skill with its own conventions, and those conventions are where marks go: a table without units in the headers, a graph with a line of best fit drawn through every point, an error source given as human error rather than as something specific and systematic.

Pearson assesses practical skills inside its written papers, which produces the same teaching conclusion by a different route. The examinable material is the reasoning about an experiment, not the execution of it. A student who can explain why a repeat was taken and what a systematic error does to a gradient scores where a student with excellent bench technique and imprecise vocabulary does not.

Where school practical work has genuinely been missed, because a student joined late or changed schools mid-course, that gap is real and a tutor should say so rather than paper over it. The honest response is to raise it with the school, which holds the equipment and the responsibility, and to secure the analysis skills that carry the marks in the meantime. Graph work, incidentally, is better on a shared screen than on paper, because the plot can be saved and reread.

05

What English mark schemes actually reward

English is the subject where able students most often lose marks without understanding why, because the loss is rarely about quality of writing. Cambridge First Language English splits evenly between a reading paper and a directed writing and composition paper. Pearson's English Language A splits between a non-fiction and transactional writing paper and a poetry, prose and imaginative writing paper, with a coursework route available in place of part of it; the board publishes the weightings.

The reliable failure is answering the wrong task well. A directed writing question specifies a form, an audience and a purpose: a letter to a head teacher, a speech to a school council, an article for a local paper. A student who writes a beautiful essay in response to a question asking for a speech has produced good writing that cannot access the top band. Fifteen minutes of taught planning fixes this permanently.

On the reading paper, the losses are different. Students summarise where the question asked for analysis of effect, or they identify a technique without saying what it does to the reader. The move that raises marks most quickly is forcing every point to end with an effect: the writer uses this, which makes the reader feel or understand that. Mechanical, and it works.

In Literature the differentiator is quotation accuracy. Six short, precisely remembered quotations per text, each with a point attached, outperform wide reading with nothing quotable. That is a memorisation task, not an interpretive one, and it is therefore reliable: it responds to spaced practice in a way that insight does not.

ENGLISH: WHAT THE QUESTION ASKS AND WHAT STUDENTS DELIVER

06

Command terms decide the answer in every subject

Command terms are the single largest source of avoidable loss across the IGCSE specifications, and they transfer across subjects, which makes teaching them unusually good value. A student who learns the difference between describe, explain and evaluate once improves in science theory papers, in Economics, in Geography and in History simultaneously.

The defaults are predictable. Students describe, because describing is what they can always do. A six-mark explain question answered descriptively typically collects a third of the available marks, and the student leaves the examination believing they answered it well. The gap between what they wrote and what was asked is invisible to them, which is why it survives two years of revision.

The fix is mechanical. Underline the command term before reading the rest of the question. Write the structure the term demands before writing any content. For explain, that means a statement followed by a because. For evaluate, a claim, evidence for, evidence against and a judgement with a reason. Taught properly it takes three or four sessions and then holds for both examined years.

There is a related skill worth building at the same time: reading the mark allocation. A two-mark question wants two distinct points, not one point written twice. A six-mark question in a science theory paper usually wants six separable statements, and students who write a flowing paragraph of three ideas score three. Counting the marks and then counting your own points is a thirty-second habit that pays in every paper.

IGCSE COMMAND TERMS AND THE HABITUAL ERROR
Command termWhat the marker wantsThe error that loses marks
State or identifyA brief answer, no justificationWriting a paragraph and losing time needed later
DescribeWhat happens or what features existAdding reasons nobody asked for while omitting features
ExplainReasons or a mechanism, with a becauseDescribing again in different words
SuggestA plausible answer applying knowledge to a new contextRecalling a textbook case that does not fit the stimulus
Calculate or determineA numerical answer with working and unitsThe right number with no working, scoring the answer mark only
CompareExplicit similarities and differences, both sidesDescribing each thing separately and leaving the comparison implied
EvaluateA judgement with evidence on both sidesOne side only, or both sides and then no judgement
07

Past papers, used so that they teach rather than score

  • One timed section, marked aloud with the student, beats a whole paper for a score
  • Classify every lost mark into content, command term, working or timing
  • Marks divided by minutes gives a rate a student can act on mid-paper
  • Board material comes from the school and the board, not a tutor's archive

Most families collect past papers and then use them as a thermometer. The student sits a paper, gets a mark, feels better or worse, and learns very little. A past paper only teaches when it is marked against the official scheme by somebody who can explain why a mark was withheld, and when the resulting errors are written down and revisited deliberately.

The method that works is one timed section at a time rather than a whole paper. Mark it with the student present, aloud. For every lost mark, decide which of four categories it belongs to: content not known, command term misread, working not shown, or time ran out. Keep the tally across sessions. After five or six sessions the tally tells you what to teach, and it is almost never what the student guessed.

Timing deserves separate attention because it is the category parents underestimate. A student who consistently leaves the last question blank is losing a boundary to pacing rather than to knowledge. Dividing marks by minutes to get a rate, writing that rate on the paper, and practising the final question first for a fortnight are three cheap interventions that between them usually recover the loss.

On materials, a caution. We reference and link official syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes rather than supplying them, because reproducing board material is copyright infringement and, for unreleased material, a malpractice exposure. Your child's school holds legitimate copies of everything needed. A provider advertising a downloadable archive of mark schemes is distributing something it has no right to distribute.

08

Al Raha Gardens, the local curriculum mix, and what we will not claim

  • The school at the centre of Al Raha Gardens runs the IB continuum, not IGCSE
  • Khalifa City runs allow 16:30; inner-city runs push sessions to 18:00
  • ADEK supervises Abu Dhabi private schools; MoHRE issues the tutor permit
  • No accreditation, no office, no guarantees, and no unsourced numbers

Al Raha Gardens is a villa community inland of Al Raha Beach, well connected to Khalifa City and the airport road. The school at its centre runs the IB continuum rather than the British pathway, so families here wanting IGCSE travel out, mostly to Khalifa City and sometimes as far as Al Bateen and Al Mushrif. That produces an unusually mixed street: Middle Years students and Year 11 IGCSE candidates living next door and sharing no assessment system at all.

The practical effect on scheduling is mild rather than severe. Khalifa City journeys are short, so a Year 10 student can manage 16:30. Students travelling to the inner-city schools are commonly home between 15:45 and 16:15 and do better at 18:00 or later. Schools across Abu Dhabi release students for parts of mock season, and that fortnight is the most productive tutoring window of the year because the marked script is fresh.

On regulation, the position is worth stating plainly. Abu Dhabi private schools are supervised by ADEK, which oversees the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. Private tutoring is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Those tutoring without one face fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted.

What this page does not claim: no regulator, examination board or school endorses IB Gram, and nothing here implies one does. We hold no ADEK, MoHRE or examination-board accreditation. There is no Abu Dhabi office. Every dirham figure carries its source and date, there is no self-generated rating, and no provider can guarantee a grade or an improvement, including us. A tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback, and writes no assessed work in any subject.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Raha Gardens

Al Raha Gardens sits inland of Al Raha Beach, close to Khalifa City and the airport road. These are the communities its families share schools and journeys with, and the detail that matters for scheduling a session.

Al Raha Beach

Waterfront apartments immediately north, sharing the same road access. Al Raha Beach families often use the same schools as Al Raha Gardens, so mock fortnights and study-leave weeks coincide across the two communities.

Khalifa City

Large low-rise community a short drive inland, containing several of the British-pathway schools Al Raha Gardens IGCSE students actually attend. The commute is short, which keeps a 16:30 session realistic for Year 10 students.

Saadiyat Island

Across the bridges, with its own school provision and a university campus. Relevant mainly because Saadiyat families and Al Raha Gardens families compete for the same specialist tutors in the evening hours.

Al Reem Island

Tower living with its own schools and a bridge crossing. Al Reem students generally finish on a similar timetable, so the evening slots in demand are the same ones Al Raha Gardens families want.

Yas Island

Residential districts alongside the leisure developments, with island schools. Yas families face a longer run to the Al Mushrif and Al Bateen schools, which pushes their Year 11 sessions later than Al Raha Gardens equivalents.

Al Reef

Further out towards the airport, with a different school mix and longer journeys. Al Reef Year 11 students are often home after 16:15, so evening slots rather than late-afternoon ones are the norm there.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Inland, with a large school population and a substantial local tutor supply. The practical consequence is that in-home quotes from tutors based here include a longer run to Al Raha Gardens.

Al Bateen and Al Mushrif

Established mainland districts holding several long-standing British schools. A meaningful share of Al Raha Gardens IGCSE students travels in this direction, which is a thirty-minute-plus afternoon return at the wrong hour.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Raha Gardens

Khalifa City, Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

The immediate cluster. The school at the centre of Al Raha Gardens itself runs the IB continuum rather than the British pathway, which is why families here wanting IGCSE commute to Khalifa City and beyond, and why the local mix of assessment systems is unusually wide.

Al Bateen, Al Mushrif and the inner city

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the subject and the component

Not science, but Chemistry theory paper, or Physics alternative to practical. The component determines which specialist is right and makes the match faster because it is a narrower search. If you are unsure which component is failing, the marked paper will show it within twenty minutes.

  2. 02

Send the most recent marked paper

A mock script or marked class test lets us classify every lost mark as content, command term, unshown working or timing. Those four need different sessions over different timescales, and the classification is worth more than the first four hours of general subject tutoring.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

One per family, before any payment and with no card details taken. Ask the tutor what the theory paper is worth in your child's science and what the practical component tests. Those are published facts, so hesitation is informative. Then check whether your child can now do something they could not an hour earlier.

  4. 04

    Agree an eight-week target

Pick the component and the two or three errors to remove, and say what success looks like in a marked paper rather than in a feeling. Several of the recurring losses on this page can be removed inside eight weeks; shown-working discipline takes longer because it is a habit.

Review against a fresh timed section

At the halfway point, run a new timed section and compare the error list. If the errors have stopped recurring, continue. If they have not, we change the tutor, the component focus or the diagnosis rather than adding hours. Re-matching is free and the diagnosis carries across.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by component, not by subject

A multiple-choice problem and an extended-theory problem are different jobs. We ask which component is failing before we match anybody, because that is what makes a tutor useful rather than merely qualified in the subject on the report card.

Weightings stated, not implied

Cambridge IGCSE sciences split thirty per cent multiple choice, fifty per cent theory and twenty per cent practical. Fifty per cent of the grade sits in extended written answers while most revision goes to recall. We put the numbers on the page so the plan can follow them.

Practical science answered honestly

A tutor on video cannot run a titration and we say so. What both boards assess is reasoning about experiments, which is paper skill, and where school practical work has genuinely been missed we tell you to raise it with the school rather than pretending to cover it.

Command terms taught once, used everywhere

The same command terms appear across science, Economics, Geography and History, so three or four sessions on question wording improve several subjects at once. It is the highest-return teaching available in these two years and schools have least time for it.

Permits explained, approvals never claimed

ADEK supervises Abu Dhabi private schools and MoHRE issues the free two-year private tuition permit. We explain both and show you how to verify a tutor's permit. IB Gram holds no regulator accreditation and has no Abu Dhabi office.

No guarantees and no invented numbers

No provider can guarantee a grade or an improvement, and we do not. Every dirham figure here carries its source and date, there is no star rating we generated, and no statistic appears without the method behind it.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Raha Gardens: your questions answered

Which component should an IGCSE home tutor in Al Raha Gardens work on first?+

Whichever one the marked paper shows is failing, and the marked paper will show it. Cambridge separate sciences split thirty per cent multiple choice, fifty per cent theory and twenty per cent practical, so a single grade can hide three very different problems. A student losing marks on close multiple-choice options needs precision and elimination work. A student losing them on extended theory answers needs command-term teaching. Those are different sessions, and guessing between them wastes the first month.

Does IB Gram send an IGCSE tutor to Al Raha Gardens homes?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Lessons for Al Raha Gardens families are one to one over live video, matched by syllabus code and component, with your child's own material on screen. For reference, in-home one-to-one visits in Abu Dhabi are quoted in the market at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included, against roughly AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor online.

How much of a Cambridge IGCSE science grade is the theory paper?+

Fifty per cent, with the multiple-choice paper at thirty and the practical component at twenty. That single split should reshape most revision plans, because fifty per cent of the grade sits in extended written answers and most students spend most of their revision time on recall for the multiple-choice paper. If your child is strong on recall and still losing marks, the theory paper and its command terms are almost certainly where the grade is going.

Can science practicals be taught properly over video with no lab?+

The examinable part can. Cambridge's alternative to practical tests experimental design, instrument reading, recording to appropriate precision, plotting and identifying error sources. Pearson assesses the same reasoning inside its written papers. All of it is paper skill with its own conventions: units in table headers, a line of best fit rather than a line through every point, and specific systematic error sources rather than human error. Graph work is arguably better on a shared screen, because the plot can be saved and reread.

Why does my son know the biology and still get a grade 6?+

Almost certainly terminology precision. IGCSE Biology has the largest specification in the science group and its mark schemes want named processes rather than fluent description. A student who writes three accurate sentences where the scheme wants one named term scores one mark from three. The fix is short timed recall on the specification's own wording, twice a week, with immediate correction and a running list of terms he has repeatedly produced imprecisely. It is unglamorous and it is measurable.

Which maths topics should we target with eight weeks left?+

Reverse percentages, similar shape scale factors, upper and lower bounds, and probability without replacement. Each is procedural rather than conceptual, each appears regularly, and each can usually be removed in one or two weeks of deliberate practice. Alongside those, enforce shown working on every line, which takes longer because it is a habit rather than a piece of knowledge but can be worth a grade boundary on a paper with several multi-stage questions.

My daughter writes beautifully in English and gets a 6, so why?+

She is probably answering the wrong task well. Directed writing questions specify a form, an audience and a purpose, and a polished essay written in response to a question asking for a speech cannot reach the top band however good the prose. Fifteen minutes of taught planning, naming the form, audience and purpose before any content, fixes this permanently. On the reading paper, make every point end with a stated effect on the reader rather than stopping at the named technique.

What is the quickest way to raise an IGCSE Literature grade?+

Memorised quotation. Six short, precisely remembered quotations per text, each with a point attached to it, outperform wide reading with nothing quotable. It is a memorisation task rather than an interpretive one, which makes it reliable: it responds to spaced practice in a way that insight does not. Students who can quote precisely also write tighter essays, because the quotation anchors the paragraph and prevents the plot retelling that costs most of the marks.

How do command terms differ, and does learning them help in more than one subject?+

They transfer across nearly every subject, which is what makes them worth teaching. State wants a line. Describe wants what happens. Explain wants reasons with a because. Suggest wants knowledge applied to an unfamiliar context. Compare wants explicit similarities and differences. Evaluate wants a judgement with evidence both ways. Three or four sessions on question wording improves science theory papers, Economics, Geography and History at the same time, which is the highest-return teaching available in these two years.

Does reading the mark allocation really change the answer?+

Substantially, and it takes thirty seconds to do. A two-mark question wants two distinct points, not one point expressed twice. A six-mark question in a science theory paper usually wants six separable statements, and a student who writes a flowing paragraph containing three ideas scores three. Counting the marks, then counting your own points before moving on, is one of the cheapest habits available. Most students have never been told to do it explicitly.

Should we buy past papers and mark schemes from a tutoring provider?+

No. Examination board syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the boards, and reproducing them is copyright infringement; for unreleased material it is also a malpractice exposure. Your child's school holds legitimate copies of everything needed, and a tutor can work from those. A provider advertising a downloadable archive of mark schemes is distributing material it has no right to distribute, which is a reason for caution about everything else it says.

Why do Al Raha Gardens families travel for IGCSE schooling?+

Because the school at the centre of this community runs the IB continuum rather than the British pathway. Families wanting IGCSE commute out, mostly to Khalifa City and sometimes as far as Al Bateen and Al Mushrif. The scheduling consequence is a split within one street: Khalifa City students can usually manage a 16:30 session, while students travelling to the inner-city schools are commonly home between 15:45 and 16:15 and do better at 18:00 or later.

Is mock fortnight a good time to begin, or should we wait?+

It is the best fortnight in the year to begin. The student is already in examination mode, so timed practice feels normal, and the marked script arrives fresh with every lost mark visible. Abu Dhabi schools often release students for parts of mock season, which creates the one daytime window of the year. Four sessions built from a real mock paper routinely achieve more than twelve built from a syllabus checklist earlier in the autumn.

Does an Abu Dhabi tutor need a permit even for online lessons?+

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit regardless of format. The MoHRE private tutor work permit came in under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers school and government teachers, private and public-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those tutoring without one face fines and penalties under the applicable laws. Because it costs nothing, a UAE-based tutor without one has no excuse; ask to see it.

What if you have no specialist for my child's component and hour?+

We say so rather than offering a generalist. Mathematics and the separate sciences at common hours usually match within a few days. A specific component in a less common subject, or a fixed weekday hour in a busy window, can take a week or more, and occasionally nobody suitable is free. Hearing that early leaves you time to look elsewhere, which is far more useful than finding out in session three that the tutor has never taught the paper you were worried about.

Name the component, send the paper

Two things produce a useful first session: the component you think is failing, and the most recent marked paper in that subject. From those a specialist can classify every lost mark, tell you which of the recurring errors on this page your child is making, and say roughly how many weeks removing them takes. Then your child meets that tutor on a free trial lesson before anything is paid. Lessons for Al Raha Gardens run live online, one to one, at an hour that works around the Khalifa City or inner-city commute.
