IB DP Philosophy Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Philosophy tutor in Abu Dhabi spends most of the first month on one distinction: the difference between holding a view and constructing an argument for it. Philosophy is marked on argument, on textual evidence, and on whether a student can state and then answer the strongest objection to their own position. This page sets out each component and the word limit attached to it. Lessons run live online, one to one, on Gulf Standard Time.

What the first marked Philosophy essay tells you

Diploma Philosophy is chosen by articulate students and marked on something articulacy does not supply. The first essay a student writes is usually fluent, well organised, and scored lower than they expected, because it sets out a position and defends it without ever stating the position that opposes it. Philosophy mark schemes reward the construction of an argument, the use of philosophical concepts with precision, and genuine engagement with a counterposition. Writing well is a prerequisite, not an achievement.

That is good news for a family deciding whether tutoring will help. The gap is structural and identifiable in one sitting. A tutor can take a student's own essay, number the premises, show where a step is missing, name the objection a philosopher in that tradition would make, and ask the student to answer it. Most students can do that work the first time it is demonstrated; what they cannot do is invent the structure unaided, because nothing earlier in school asked them to.

The course is assessed through a paper on the core theme and an optional theme, a paper on one prescribed text the school has chosen, an internally assessed philosophical analysis of a non-philosophical stimulus written to a 2,000-word ceiling, and at Higher Level a further paper on the nature of philosophical activity based on an unseen text. Confirm the current weightings with your child's Diploma coordinator, because the IB revises subject guides on a rolling cycle and a stale figure sends effort to the wrong component.

Three features of this subject consistently surprise Abu Dhabi parents. First, Paper 2 requires reading an actual philosophical text, not reading about it, and the marks depend on citing passages. Second, the internal assessment starts from something that is not philosophy at all, a film, an advertisement, a news item or an image, and the skill is extracting a genuine philosophical issue from it. Third, the word limits across the Diploma are strict and interact: a student writing a Philosophy internal assessment, a Theory of Knowledge essay and an Extended Essay is working to three different ceilings in the same term.

Lessons for UAE families run live online, one to one, with a shared screen. There are no home visits in Abu Dhabi; in-home tutoring is something we offer only in India. For Philosophy the shared screen earns its place: a passage from the prescribed text sits on one side, the student's paragraph on the other, and the tutor marks the point at which the argument stops following from the text. That annotated pair is saved, which is what makes the next session continuous rather than a fresh conversation.

There is one more reason families in this emirate come to us for this subject rather than for a more widely taught one. Philosophy is offered by relatively few schools here, and where it runs the class is often three or four students taught by a teacher whose main subject is something else. That is a calibration problem rather than a teaching problem. A student in a class of three has almost no marked work to compare their own against, so a competent essay can sit two bands below where they believe it sits, and nothing in the school year reveals that until a mock. An external reader who will object to the argument is the cheapest correction available.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Philosophy is a Group 3 Diploma course and is offered by relatively few schools in this emirate. Students reach it by three routes, each leaving a distinct first-term gap.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme

Assessed by a paper combining the core theme with an optional theme, a paper on one prescribed text, an internally assessed analysis of a non-philosophical stimulus, and at Higher Level a paper on the nature of philosophical activity. Every component rewards the same underlying skill: an argument set out so that each step can be examined and objected to.

Because few Abu Dhabi schools offer Philosophy, classes here are often very small and sometimes taught by a teacher whose main subject is something else. That is not a criticism of the teaching; it is a description of the calibration problem. A class of three produces almost no marked exemplars, so students have little sense of where their work sits against the bands.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

MYP individuals and societies and language and literature both build the habits of structured discussion and textual reading that Philosophy formalises. What the MYP does not require is the explicit identification of premises and the deliberate construction of an objection, which are the two moves every Philosophy mark scheme rewards.

Students arriving from an Abu Dhabi MYP cohort usually write confidently and argue implicitly. The first intervention is mechanical: write the argument as numbered premises before writing prose. Students find it uncomfortable for a fortnight and then find their essays getting shorter and scoring higher, which is the point at which the habit sticks.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A CP student may take Diploma Philosophy as one of their DP courses, sitting the identical components. The reflective project in CP shares real ground with philosophical analysis, since both require a student to examine an issue and consider positions other than their own.

CP students in this emirate taking Philosophy are typically the only candidate in their school doing so. One-to-one work supplies the thing a class normally supplies: somebody to object to the argument. Philosophy learned without opposition produces essays that have never been tested, and the examination is the first place they are.

EECore · 4,000 words · DP1 into DP2

Extended Essay in Philosophy

A 4,000-word essay on a philosophical question, supervised in school. The subject-specific failure is choosing a question that is not philosophical, such as a historical or empirical question about what a thinker believed, rather than an argumentative question about whether a position can be sustained.

Students in Abu Dhabi have good library access through the universities on Saadiyat Island, which matters because a Philosophy Extended Essay needs scholarship rather than summaries. It is also the right home for an interest in the Arabic philosophical tradition, which rarely appears on the prescribed-text list but is entirely legitimate essay territory.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the components and neighbouring courses Abu Dhabi families raise alongside Philosophy, with what each one demands.

Core theme: being human

HL and SL, Paper 1 Section A

Answered from an unseen stimulus, which must be used as a starting point and not described. The marks are for identifying a philosophical issue the stimulus raises and then arguing about it, so an answer that spends a page explaining the image has spent a page on nothing.

Optional themes

HL and SL, Paper 1 Section B

Ethics, epistemology, philosophy of religion, philosophy of science, political philosophy and related themes, with the school choosing which it teaches. Standard Level students study one; Higher Level students study two, which is the main content difference between the levels.

Prescribed text

HL and SL, Paper 2

One text set by the school from the IB's prescribed list, examined through questions that require passages to be used as evidence. Students who have read a summary rather than the text can discuss the ideas and cannot cite the argument, and the mark scheme can tell the difference.

Internal assessment

HL and SL, 2,000 words

A philosophical analysis of a non-philosophical stimulus: a film, an advertisement, an image, a news item. Marked on the identification of the issue, the quality of the philosophical analysis and the engagement with it. Most lost marks come from describing the stimulus instead of using it.

Higher Level paper on philosophical activity

HL only

An unseen text about what philosophy is and how it proceeds, answered analytically. It rewards students who have thought about method rather than only about positions, and it is the component most often left until the final term.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, all DP students

The closest relative Philosophy has, and the two reinforce each other directly. The TOK essay runs to a 1,600-word ceiling and the exhibition commentary to 950, so a Philosophy student is working to several limits at once and benefits from treating them as one skill.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Trains close reading, which is exactly what the prescribed text paper requires. The transfer needs stating explicitly: literary analysis asks what a text does, while philosophical analysis asks whether its argument works, and those are different questions about the same page.

History

HL and SL

A frequent companion, strong on evidence discipline and on taking opposing positions seriously. The risk is answering a philosophical question historically, by describing what thinkers believed and when, rather than assessing whether a position can be defended.

Global Politics

HL and SL

Overlaps substantially with political philosophy as an optional theme, particularly on legitimacy, rights and justice. Students taking both can use the same reading twice, provided they keep Global Politics empirical and keep Philosophy normative.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Shares the structure of formal reasoning, and students on this route often take to premise-and-conclusion analysis quickly. Epistemology and philosophy of science both benefit from a student who is comfortable with the idea of a proof and its assumptions.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every Philosophy request we take from this emirate, and each is organised around a component rather than a number of hours. None involves a tutor travelling to a UAE address.

Argument-building sessions

A weekly slot in which the student writes an argument as numbered premises, the tutor attacks it, and the student revises it before writing prose. Essays are then marked on screen against the band descriptors. The deliverable is the structure, because once a student can build and defend an argument the content takes care of itself.

  • Premises numbered before prose is written, every time
  • The strongest objection named by the tutor and answered by the student
  • Conceptual terms used precisely, with the definition checked
  • Marked essays saved so a month's work is comparable

Prescribed-text work

Close reading of the actual text the school has set, passage by passage, with the student learning to locate and cite the argument rather than recall a summary of it. The tutor works from the student's own edition so that references match, which matters when an examination answer needs to point at a specific passage.

  • The text read in the student's own edition, with passages marked
  • Argument structure mapped section by section rather than summarised
  • Practice at using a short quotation as evidence, not as decoration
  • Standard objections to the text identified and rehearsed

Internal assessment supervision

Sessions on choosing a non-philosophical stimulus with real philosophical traction, identifying the issue it raises, building the analysis, and keeping the whole thing inside the 2,000-word ceiling. The tutor comments on drafts the student has written, naming the criterion. No part of the submitted text comes from the tutor.

  • Stimulus tested for philosophical traction before any writing starts
  • One issue analysed properly rather than three mentioned
  • Word budget allocated across sections before the first draft
  • Criterion-referenced comments on the student's own drafts

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The components, the word limits and where effort should go

  • Paper 1 carries the largest share of the grade at both levels
  • Philosophy internal assessment: 2,000 words; TOK essay: 1,600; Extended Essay: 4,000
  • Higher Level adds a second optional theme and the unseen-text paper
  • Confirm all weightings with the Diploma coordinator before planning around them

Standard Level Philosophy comprises a paper covering the core theme and one optional theme, a paper on one prescribed text, and the internal assessment. Higher Level adds a second optional theme and a further paper on the nature of philosophical activity based on an unseen text. The first paper carries the largest share of the grade at both levels, which is worth knowing because it is also the paper students prepare least deliberately, treating it as the one where general ability will carry them.

The word limits are the other thing to plan around, and they are not negotiable. The Philosophy internal assessment runs to a 2,000-word ceiling. The Theory of Knowledge essay, which every Diploma student writes, runs to 1,600. The Extended Essay runs to 4,000. A Philosophy student who also chooses this subject for the Extended Essay is therefore writing three argumentative pieces to three different ceilings, often in the same two terms, and the planning failure is treating them as one task that can be left in sequence to the last minute.

The table below sets the components beside the limits so the whole load is visible on one screen. Weightings are given as indicative shares and should be confirmed with the Diploma coordinator, because the IB revises guides periodically. What does not change is the ordering of effort: the first paper is the biggest block of marks, the prescribed text is the component where unprepared students are most exposed, and the internal assessment is the one whose deadline arrives while everything else is also due.

Argument, not opinion: the move that changes the mark

  • Write the argument as numbered premises before writing any prose
  • State the strongest objection, then answer it; do not wave at it
  • Check every technical term against its use in the debate
  • Shorter, tighter essays frequently outscore longer fluent ones

The single most productive hour in Diploma Philosophy is the one in which a student learns to write their own argument as numbered premises. It looks like a classroom exercise and it is the whole subject. A claim written as prose can hide a missing step; the same claim written as premises cannot. Once a student sees that premise two does not follow from premise one, they can either repair the argument or choose a different one, and both are philosophical work. Fluent prose that conceals the gap earns nothing.

The second move is the counterposition, and students resist it because it feels like conceding. The mark schemes reward the opposite: an essay that states the strongest objection to its own position and then answers it demonstrates exactly the capacity being assessed. An essay that mentions an objection in a subordinate clause and dismisses it demonstrates that the student knows objections exist. Those two essays can contain the same information and sit two bands apart.

The third is conceptual precision. Philosophy words have technical uses, and using them loosely is the commonest invisible loss in this subject. Knowledge, justification, free will, personhood, duty, right: each has a specific role in the debates the course covers, and an essay that uses one in its everyday sense while the question uses it technically answers a different question. A tutor's work here is pedantic in the best sense, stopping at each term and asking what the student means by it.

03

Paper 1: using a stimulus instead of describing it

  • Connect the stimulus to a question in one sentence, then leave it
  • Choose the issue you can argue, not the most interesting one
  • Balanced-and-therefore-undecided essays sit in the middle bands
  • Higher Level covers two optional themes, so sequence the revision

The core theme section of Paper 1 begins with an unseen stimulus: an image, a short passage, a scenario. It exists to prompt a philosophical question about being human, and the marks are for the argument that follows, not for the reading of the stimulus. Students who have not practised this spend a substantial part of their answer explaining what the stimulus shows, which is both unrewarded and time they needed for the argument.

The practised version takes about ninety seconds. Read the stimulus, identify two philosophical issues it raises, choose the one you can argue best, state it as a question, and begin. A single sentence connects the stimulus to the question, and then the stimulus is finished with. That sequence has to be drilled, because under examination pressure the instinct is to describe what is in front of you, and the instinct is wrong.

The optional theme section is a conventional essay on the theme or themes the school teaches, and it fails in a predictable way: the two-sided answer that presents a view, presents the opposite, and concludes that both have merit. Balance is not the criterion; argument is. A student may reach a modest conclusion, but it has to be a conclusion, reached by weighing the objections rather than by listing them. Standard Level students study one optional theme and Higher Level students two, which is the main content difference between the levels and the reason Higher Level revision needs sequencing rather than cramming.

04

Paper 2: the prescribed text, and why summaries fail

  • Find out which prescribed text the school has set before choosing a tutor
  • Read the text itself in a proper edition, not a study guide
  • Map the argument section by section: claim, support, objection, reply
  • Mark passages so they can be cited quickly in the examination

Paper 2 examines one philosophical text, chosen by the school from the IB's prescribed list, which includes both Western and non-Western works. Confirm which text your child's school has set before engaging any tutor, because this is the component where the wrong specialism is least recoverable: a tutor who knows one text extremely well is of limited use to a student examined on another. The texts schools commonly set include works by Plato, Descartes, Hume, Mill, Nietzsche, Sartre and de Beauvoir, among others on the list.

The reason summaries fail is simple. The questions require the student to use the text as evidence, which means locating the passage where the argument is actually made and showing what it says. A student who has read a study guide knows the conclusions and cannot point to the reasoning, so their answer describes a position the author held rather than examining the argument the author gave. Examiners see the difference immediately, and the band descriptors are written to catch it.

The work that fixes this is slow and unglamorous. The text is read in the student's own edition, section by section, with the argument mapped rather than summarised: what is claimed, what supports it, what the author anticipates as an objection, how the reply works. Passages are marked so they can be found under examination conditions. Standard objections to the text are rehearsed, because a question asking the student to assess the argument wants a real criticism and not a complaint about style. Four or five sessions of that on the set text transforms this component.

PRESCRIBED-TEXT PREPARATION - WHAT COUNTS AS TEXTUAL EVIDENCE

05

The internal assessment: 2,000 words from something that is not philosophy

  • The stimulus must be non-philosophical; the analysis must be philosophical
  • Test the stimulus for traction before writing anything
  • One issue analysed properly beats three issues mentioned
  • Set the word budget before drafting, with analysis taking the bulk

The internally assessed task asks for a philosophical analysis of a non-philosophical stimulus, written to a 2,000-word ceiling. The stimulus can be a film, an advertisement, a photograph, a news item, a song, a piece of fiction. It must not be a philosophical text, and the assessment is not of the stimulus but of the philosophical work the student does from it. Confirm the current criteria and word limit with your child's teacher, since the IB revises guides on a rolling cycle.

Stimulus choice is the decision that determines the mark, and it is made worst when made fastest. A stimulus with real traction raises a question the course's concepts can address: an advertisement that presupposes something about personal identity, a film that depends on a particular account of free will, a news item in which two conceptions of justice collide. A stimulus with no traction produces a paper that describes the film for 800 words and then attaches some philosophy to it. Testing the stimulus before writing is half an hour that saves a fortnight.

The second common loss is breadth. Two thousand words is enough for one issue examined properly, with an objection and a reply, and nothing like enough for three issues mentioned. Students who have read widely want to show it, and the ceiling punishes them for it. A word budget agreed before drafting, with the analysis given the bulk of the count, is the practical control. Feedback from a tutor is comment on drafts the student has written, naming the criterion and the marks at stake; no portion of the submitted text comes from anybody else.

CHOOSING AN INTERNAL ASSESSMENT STIMULUS - WHAT WORKS AND WHAT DOES NOT
Type of stimulusWhy it can workThe philosophical issue it tends to raiseThe trap
AdvertisementCompresses assumptions about persons and value into secondsPersonal identity, autonomy, the manufacture of desireDescribing the advert's technique instead of its assumptions

Technology product or interfaceEmbeds assumptions about mind, attention and agencyPhilosophy of mind, personhood, moral responsibilityWriting about the technology rather than the concept
06

Higher Level: the paper about philosophy itself

  • No content to revise, but method can be prepared across two years
  • Respond to the text's claims about philosophy, not to its subject matter
  • Thought experiments, intuitions and conceptual analysis are the recurring material
  • Preparation overlaps directly with Theory of Knowledge

Higher Level candidates sit an additional paper based on an unseen text concerning the nature of philosophical activity: what philosophy is, how it proceeds, what distinguishes it from other enquiry, what its methods can and cannot settle. It is the component students most often postpone, partly because it has no syllabus content to revise and partly because it sounds like something that cannot be prepared for. Both impressions are wrong.

It can be prepared, and the preparation is transferable. A student who has thought explicitly about method across the course has the material: why philosophers construct thought experiments, what an appeal to intuition is doing, how conceptual analysis differs from empirical investigation, what it means for a philosophical disagreement to be resolved. Those are questions a tutor can raise in every session for two years, which is cheaper and more effective than a crash course in the final term.

The examination skill is reading an unfamiliar text accurately under time pressure and responding to its claims about philosophy rather than to its topic. Students who have practised this stop paraphrasing and start engaging: identifying the view of philosophical activity the text advances, assessing it, and bringing their own experience of the subject to bear. Three or four practice passages, properly marked, is usually enough to turn a feared component into a predictable one. The overlap with Theory of Knowledge is substantial, so the preparation serves two parts of the Diploma at once.

07

Reading philosophy in a UAE classroom

  • Paper 2 and the optional themes are fixed by the school; the Extended Essay is not
  • A tradition outside the prescribed list belongs in the Extended Essay or the stimulus choice
  • Essay questions must be argumentative rather than historical
  • Tutors present arguments and objections; the student defends their own position

Philosophy in this emirate is taught to classes drawn from many traditions, and students frequently arrive with philosophical interests the prescribed-text list does not cover. The Arabic tradition is the clearest example: a student who has encountered al-Farabi or Ibn Sina will find that neither is likely to be the school's set text, and may conclude that their interest has no place in the course. That conclusion is wrong, and it is worth correcting early.

The examination components are fixed: Paper 2 is on the set text, and the optional themes are the ones the school teaches. But the Extended Essay is open, and it is the right home for a serious interest in a tradition outside the prescribed list, provided the question is argumentative rather than historical. The internal assessment is also open in its choice of stimulus, so a student can take a locally resonant stimulus and analyse it with the concepts the course supplies. Both routes let an interest do real academic work rather than sitting outside it.

The classroom point is about handling disagreement, which this subject requires. Philosophy of religion, political philosophy and ethics all involve positions students hold personally, and the course asks them to state and assess arguments on several sides. Our tutors present the arguments and the objections, and require the student to defend their own view against the strongest counterargument rather than adopting the tutor's. The Abrahamic Family House on Saadiyat Island, which opened in 2023, is a local institution that makes questions about pluralism concrete, and it can be used as case material in exactly that analytical spirit.

08

What to ask before you pay, and what IB Gram is not

  • Ask which prescribed text and which optional themes a tutor has actually taught
  • Ask for written, criterion-named feedback so the work is auditable
  • Ask about the MoHRE permit: free for two years, issued in about two working days
  • No regulator or board approval is claimed, and no finished coursework is sold
  • Market band for DP specialists online: roughly AED 150-450 per hour, October 2026

Four questions separate a useful Philosophy tutor from an articulate one. Which prescribed text have you taught, and how recently. Which optional themes can you cover. Will you give me written feedback naming the criteria. Do you hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit. The first two are subject questions, the third is about whether the work will be auditable, and the fourth is a legal one that applies to anybody tutoring privately in this country.

On that last point the facts are public. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years, with eligibility extending to registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students, and that tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so no amount is quoted here. MoHRE's service page lists a two-working-day completion time and no fee, so there is no good reason for a working tutor to lack one.

Two further things a parent should know. In this emirate the schools regulator is ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, described by u.ae as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools; Gulf News has reported that its professional-ethics rules bar school staff from paid private tuition of their own enrolled students, which should be verified on adek.gov.ae. And IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from ADEK, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board, runs no office in the UAE, and sells no finished coursework: a tutor teaches, objects, and comments on drafts the student has written, and no part of a submitted analysis or essay comes from the tutor. Market rates for a Diploma specialist here, read from providers' published pages in October 2026, run roughly AED 150 to AED 450 an hour online.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi communities, libraries and the institutions a Philosophy student can use

Philosophy needs texts and interlocutors rather than field sites, so these notes cover both where students live and where scholarship and relevant institutions sit in this emirate.

Saadiyat Island

University campuses with academic libraries and public lecture programmes, plus the Abrahamic Family House, which opened in 2023. For a student studying philosophy of religion, that is a documented institution raising live questions about pluralism and belief.

Al Reem Island

Dense apartment communities with large Diploma cohorts and crowded evenings. Philosophy sessions work well in a fixed 60-minute slot here, because an argument-building session needs an uninterrupted stretch rather than a flexible window.

Khalifa City and Al Raha

The emirate's largest Diploma population, and the corridor where Philosophy is most often taken in a class of three or four. Students here gain most from an external reader who will object to their arguments rather than agree with them.

Al Bateen and Al Mushrif

Established island neighbourhoods where several students take Philosophy alongside English A at Higher Level. That combination is strong on textual reading and needs explicit work on the difference between interpreting a text and assessing its argument.

Masdar City

Home to research institutions working on artificial intelligence and energy, which makes questions about mind, agency and technology concrete rather than abstract. A useful source of internal assessment stimuli that are genuinely local and not over-used.

Yas Island

Newer schools with younger cohorts, where Philosophy is sometimes newly introduced and the first cohort has no predecessors' work to learn from. That is the clearest case for bringing in marked exemplars from outside the school.

Al Ain

Inside the same emirate, with a small international-school market and effectively no local Philosophy specialists. Students here who take the subject are almost always dependent on online teaching, which is the straightforward argument for it.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Mussafah

Mainland communities well away from the island's institutions, so library access is largely digital. For Philosophy that matters less than for most subjects, provided the student has a proper edition of the prescribed text rather than a summary.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Saadiyat schools

Students we support on the island and Saadiyat attend established schools, a minority of which offer Philosophy as a Diploma option. Where it runs, ask which optional themes and which prescribed text the department teaches, since both can change with staffing.

  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Mushrif School

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas

The mainland and island corridor holds the bulk of the emirate's Diploma students. Philosophy enquiries from here typically involve a very small class, and sometimes a student taking the subject with support rather than in a taught group.

  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Repton Abu Dhabi

Schools are named only as context for the Abu Dhabi education ecosystem; no affiliation, endorsement or commercial relationship with any named school is implied, and whether a school offers Philosophy in a given year should be confirmed with the school and on adek.gov.ae.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the text, the themes and the deadline

The first message that helps names the level, the prescribed text the school has set, which optional themes it teaches, whether the internal assessment stimulus has been chosen, and the next internal deadline. The prescribed text in particular determines who can actually teach the course your child is sitting.

  2. 02

Free first lesson built on one paragraph

One 50-minute online lesson in one subject at no charge, no card details taken. The tutor takes a paragraph of the student's own writing, numbers its premises, shows where a step is missing, and names the objection it needs to answer. That demonstration is usually enough for a family to judge whether the work will help.

  3. 03

A plan against components and word limits

The written plan names each session, the component it targets, and the rate in AED, with the Diploma's competing word ceilings laid out so the internal assessment, Theory of Knowledge essay and Extended Essay are not all left to the same fortnight. Nothing recurring starts before you agree it.

Weekly slot, held through the term

Sessions keep the same hour on Gulf Standard Time and move around mock weeks, examination periods and Ramadan timings rather than lapsing. Marked essays and annotated text passages are saved from the shared screen, so each session starts from the previous one rather than from scratch.

  5. 05

Review on marked essays, and say so if nothing moves

Every four to six weeks the tutor reviews marked work with you by component and band: whether premises are now explicit, whether objections are being answered, whether textual evidence is being cited. If the pattern is static after a fair run, we will recommend a change of tutor or format rather than continue.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The argument taught as a structure

Numbered premises, the strongest objection, then the reply. Most students can do this the first time it is demonstrated and cannot invent it alone, because nothing earlier in school required it. It is the fastest-moving work in the subject and it improves the Theory of Knowledge essay at the same time.

The prescribed text matched before matching a tutor

Paper 2 is the component where the wrong specialism is least recoverable. We ask which text the school has set before suggesting anybody, and we work from the student's own edition so that passage references match what they will have in the examination.

Stimulus choice treated as the decision it is

The internal assessment mark is largely determined before any writing happens, by whether the stimulus has philosophical traction. Half an hour testing a candidate stimulus against the course's concepts prevents the paper that describes a film for 800 words.

All three word ceilings planned together

A Philosophy student is writing to 2,000 words, 1,600 words and 4,000 words in overlapping terms. Treating those as one planning problem rather than three separate emergencies is the single most useful thing a tutor does for a DP2 student's calendar.

Positions presented, not supplied

In ethics, political philosophy and philosophy of religion the student defends their own view against the strongest counterargument. A tutor's job is to supply the objection and the precision, which is what the mark scheme rewards, rather than a conclusion the student then reproduces.

Facts with sources, and no borrowed authority

Permit rules come from u.ae and mohre.gov.ae, the ADEK ethics position is flagged as press-reported until verified, and no IB examination date is published here because the IB's own site cannot be checked automatically. We claim no regulator or board approval and operate no UAE office.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Why did my child's first IB Philosophy essay score lower than expected?+

Because fluency is a prerequisite rather than an achievement in this subject. A well-written essay that states a position and defends it, without ever stating the position that opposes it, cannot reach the upper bands. The mark schemes reward the construction of an argument, precise use of philosophical concepts, and genuine engagement with a counterposition. The repair is structural and quick to demonstrate: write the argument as numbered premises, find the missing step, name the strongest objection, and answer it. Most students manage it the first time they see it done.

Which prescribed text will my child be examined on in Philosophy Paper 2?+

Whichever one the school has set from the IB's prescribed list, which includes both Western and non-Western works. Texts commonly set include works by Plato, Descartes, Hume, Mill, Nietzsche, Sartre and de Beauvoir, among others. Find out before engaging any tutor, because this is the component where the wrong specialism is least recoverable: deep knowledge of one text does not transfer to another. Ask the department directly, and ask which edition they use, so that passage references match what your child will have in the examination room.

Why is reading a study guide not enough for the Philosophy text paper?+

Because the questions require passages to be used as evidence. A student who has read a summary knows the author's conclusions and cannot point to where the reasoning happens, so the answer describes a position rather than examining an argument. Examiners detect that immediately and the descriptors are written to catch it. The work that fixes it is reading the text in a proper edition, mapping each section as claim, support, anticipated objection and reply, and marking passages so they can be found quickly under time pressure.

What can be used as a stimulus for the Philosophy internal assessment?+

Anything that is not itself a philosophical text: a film, an advertisement, a photograph, a news item, a song, a piece of fiction. The assessment is of the philosophical analysis, not of the stimulus. What matters is traction. A good stimulus presupposes something the course's concepts can examine, such as an account of personal identity or free will or justice. A stimulus with no traction produces eight hundred words of description with philosophy bolted on. Test the candidate before writing; it is half an hour that saves a fortnight.

How long is the Philosophy internal assessment and what else competes with it?+

It runs to a 2,000-word ceiling. The complication is that a Diploma student is also writing a Theory of Knowledge essay to 1,600 words and, if they choose Philosophy for it, an Extended Essay to 4,000 words, often across the same two terms. Treating those as three separate emergencies is the usual planning failure. Mapped together at the start of DP2, with the internal assessment stimulus chosen early, the load is manageable. Confirm the current limits with your child's teacher, since the IB revises subject guides periodically.

What does the Higher Level Philosophy paper on philosophical activity involve?+

An unseen text about what philosophy is and how it proceeds, answered analytically. There is no syllabus content to revise, which is why students postpone it, but it can be prepared. The material is method: why philosophers use thought experiments, what an appeal to intuition does, how conceptual analysis differs from empirical enquiry, what resolving a philosophical disagreement would look like. Three or four marked practice passages usually convert it from a feared component into a predictable one, and the preparation overlaps heavily with Theory of Knowledge.

Can a student write about Islamic philosophy in the IB Diploma?+

Not in Paper 2, where the text is fixed by the school from the IB's list, but yes elsewhere. The Extended Essay is open, and a serious interest in al-Farabi, Ibn Sina or the wider Arabic tradition belongs there, provided the question is argumentative rather than historical: whether a position can be sustained, not what a thinker believed and when. The internal assessment stimulus is also open, so a locally resonant stimulus can be analysed with the course's concepts. Both routes let the interest do real academic work.

Does a balanced Philosophy essay that considers both sides score well?+

Only if it reaches a conclusion. Balance is not the criterion; argument is. An essay that presents a view, presents the opposite, and decides that both have merit sits in the middle bands however elegantly it is written. The upper bands want a judgement reached by weighing the objections, which may be modest and provisional but has to be a judgement. Students find this counterintuitive because even-handedness is rewarded elsewhere in school, so it usually takes two or three marked essays before the habit changes.

How should a student handle the Paper 1 unseen stimulus?+

In about ninety seconds. Read it, identify two philosophical issues it raises, choose the one you can argue best, state it as a question, connect it to the stimulus in a single sentence, and then leave the stimulus alone. The marks are for the argument, not for the reading, so time spent explaining what the image or passage shows is unrewarded. The instinct under examination pressure is to describe what is in front of you, which is why this sequence has to be drilled rather than merely understood.

Is Philosophy offered in many Abu Dhabi schools?+

Relatively few, and where it runs the classes are often very small, sometimes three students, occasionally taught by someone whose main subject is another. That creates a calibration problem rather than a teaching one: a tiny class generates almost no marked exemplars, so a student has little sense of where their work sits against the bands. External marked feedback is the cheapest correction. Ask the individuals and societies department whether Philosophy runs this year, which optional themes it covers and which text it sets.

Does IB Gram send a Philosophy tutor to a home in Abu Dhabi?+

No. There are no home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Lessons are one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. The shared screen suits this subject particularly well: a passage from the prescribed text sits beside the student's own paragraph, and the tutor marks the point where the argument stops following from the text. That annotated pair is saved, so the next session continues rather than restarts.

What may a Philosophy tutor do with an internal assessment draft?+

Teach the analysis, challenge the stimulus choice, press on a definition, name the objection the argument has to answer, and comment on drafts the student has written, naming the criterion and the marks at stake. What a tutor may not do is author any part of the submitted text, supply sentences to insert, or hand over finished work. Providers selling completed coursework are selling a malpractice risk that lands on the candidate. Our tutors state that boundary to the student in the first session rather than in small print.

Does a Philosophy tutor in Abu Dhabi need a MoHRE permit?+

Yes. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE. u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years, with eligibility covering registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. Tutoring without one attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, though no amounts are published anywhere we could verify. MoHRE's service page lists a two-working-day completion time and no fee, so asking is entirely reasonable.

How many Philosophy sessions does a DP2 student usually book?+

A common shape is four or five sessions on the prescribed text, weekly argument-building work through the mock period, and internal assessment supervision timed to the school's deadline. Higher Level students add three or four marked practice passages for the unseen paper. We prefer a fixed block with a stated end point to an open weekly arrangement, and if marked essays stop moving after a fair run the honest recommendation may be a different tutor or a different format.

Will a tutor tell my child what to think about ethics or religion?+

No, and an examiner would penalise the result if they did. The course requires students to state and assess arguments on several sides, so the mark depends on the student defending their own position against the strongest counterargument. Our tutors supply the objection and the conceptual precision, not the conclusion. In practice that means a session often ends with the student holding the view they started with, but holding it for better reasons and able to say what would count against it.

Send one paragraph and the name of the set text

Two pieces of information make the first conversation useful: one paragraph of your child's own philosophical writing, and the name of the prescribed text their school has set. The paragraph shows whether the loss is in argument structure, conceptual precision or counterposition. The text determines who can actually teach the paper they will sit. That is what the free 50-minute online lesson is built on, in one subject, with no card details taken and no obligation to continue. Lessons run online from any community in the emirate, held on Gulf Standard Time.
