IB DP German B Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP German B tutor in Abu Dhabi spends most of their time on four things, and none of them is vocabulary. Cases, adjective endings, word order and the verbs that split in half account for the large majority of marks lost in this subject, and each one is a system that can be taught rather than a gap that must be filled. Lessons are one to one over live video, and the first is free.

  • Grammar taught as systems, not as a list of exceptions
  • Marked work annotated by error type, so the pattern is visible
  • Tutors who have prepared both the SL and HL oral tasks
  • A free first lesson, no card details, no obligation

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

German B is a systems problem, and systems can be taught

German rewards a particular kind of student and punishes a particular kind of teaching. It rewards anyone willing to learn a handful of systems properly, because once the systems hold they generate correct output indefinitely. It punishes the approach most students default to, which is treating each new ending as a fact to memorise. A child who has filled three exercise books with correct answers and still cannot write a paragraph has usually been taught German as a list rather than as a structure.

There are four of these systems and they interlock. The case system, which decides the form of articles, pronouns and adjectives according to the grammatical job a noun is doing. Adjective endings, which depend on the case, the gender, the number and crucially on what kind of word came before the adjective. Word order, where the main verb sits second in a statement and goes to the end in a subordinate clause, creating the bracket that German sentences are built around. And separable verbs, whose prefixes detach and travel to the end of the clause.

The useful consequence for tutoring is that German B marks move in steps rather than smoothly. A student who finally understands that the preceding word selects the adjective-ending pattern does not improve by two per cent; they stop making an entire class of error. That is why marked work in this subject should be annotated by error type as well as by criterion, and why three tasks are usually enough to see which system is missing rather than which words are.

Assessment is the same shape as the other language B courses, which is worth stating so nobody is surprised. Paper 1 is written production and carries a quarter of the grade. Paper 2 combines listening and reading and carries half. The individual oral carries the remaining quarter, is conducted and marked inside your child's school, and is moderated by the IB. Higher Level adds two literary works written in German and replaces the visual-stimulus oral with one built on an extract from one of them. Families moving into the emirate mid-Diploma should check which level their new school actually runs, because German B at Higher Level is not offered everywhere and a mid-course level change is awkward to arrange.

Lessons are delivered one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared document so the writing is watched as it happens. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. German B is a small specialism in this emirate and the honest position is that geography should not decide access to it: a family in Al Reem should be able to work with someone who has taught the HL extract oral, rather than with whoever happens to speak German nearby.

At a glance

  • Four interlocking systems: cases, adjective endings, word order, separable verbs
  • Paper 1 is 25%, Paper 2 listening and reading 50%, the individual oral 25%
  • Higher Level adds two literary works and an extract-based oral
  • Marked work is annotated by error type, so the missing system is visible
  • Lessons run online on Gulf Standard Time, with a free first session
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

German is taught unevenly across the IB programmes in this emirate, and continuity is the exception rather than the rule. These notes are about what a student typically arrives with at each handover.

DPAges 16-19 - Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

German B is a Group 2 language acquisition subject at Standard or Higher Level. Three components carry the grade and the German-specific difficulty is concentrated in written production, where case and ending errors accumulate. Tutoring is system-led: one structure at a time, taught to the point where it generates correct output without conscious thought.

German B cohorts in Abu Dhabi are usually very small, and a student may be one of three or four candidates. That brings close teacher attention and very little peer practice, so the conversational half of the oral is often the weakest part of an otherwise capable candidate's profile.

MYPAges 11-16 - Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Language Acquisition phases describe capability rather than years served. A phase 4 leaver is typically ready for German B SL and a phase 5 or 6 leaver for Higher Level. In German specifically, phase placement often flatters a student whose vocabulary is good and whose case system was never made secure.

Students arriving mid-MYP from a German-curriculum school elsewhere are common in the emirate's energy and engineering communities, and their records rarely translate directly. A written diagnostic before Diploma selection is worth more than the paperwork.

PYPAges 3-12 - FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Primary German in an international school is usually exposure: songs, numbers, classroom routines. It leaves accent and listening confidence and no grammatical structure, which is the right outcome at that age. Families should not count it as prior study when a Diploma placement is being decided years later.

German-speaking households in Abu Dhabi often maintain the language socially while their children are schooled in English, which produces fluent speakers with no written German at all - a profile that needs conventions and structure rather than conversation.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

In German the useful breakdown is by grammatical system rather than by topic, because that is where the marks are won and lost. Each entry below is a structure, with what it governs and how long it takes to secure.

The four cases

SL and HL

Nominative, accusative, dative and genitive, selected by the job a noun does and by the preposition or verb governing it. The foundation of everything else, and the structure most often half-known. Secure in roughly a term of deliberate work.

Adjective endings

SL and HL

Three patterns chosen by what precedes the adjective: a definite article, an indefinite one, or nothing at all. Students taught these as three unrelated tables rarely use any of them correctly under time. Taught as one decision, they become quick.

Word order and the verbal bracket

SL and HL

The conjugated verb sits second in a statement; other verb parts go to the end, creating a bracket around the clause. In a subordinate clause the whole verb moves to the end. This is what makes German sound German and what students abandon under pressure.

Separable and inseparable verbs

SL and HL

Prefixes that detach and travel to the end of the clause, against those that never move. The error is rarely about meaning and almost always about position, which makes it quick to fix once a student notices the pattern.

The perfect tense with haben and sein

SL and HL

Choosing the right auxiliary and placing the past participle correctly at the end. The most common narrative structure in the written paper, and the one where word order and verb formation fail together.

Modal verbs

SL and HL

High-frequency, irregular in the present, and they push the infinitive to the end of the clause. Excellent value in a session because they appear constantly and they teach the bracket structure at the same time.

Gender and plural formation

SL and HL

Gender has to be learned with the noun rather than deduced, and plural formation follows several patterns. Not glamorous and quietly expensive: a wrong gender propagates into the article and then into the adjective ending.

Subordinate clauses and the passive

SL and HL

Range that lifts a written task out of the simple register, provided the verb-final rule holds. Worth attempting only once word order is stable, because a collapsed complex sentence scores lower than a correct simple one.

Konjunktiv II for politeness and hypotheticals

SL and HL

A small set of forms that make a candidate sound markedly more competent in both the oral and the written task. Cheap to learn, disproportionately visible, and routinely left out of a crowded syllabus.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

German work divides by system rather than by component in the early phases, then by component once the structures hold. Most families start with the first shape below and move to the third in DP2.

Systems hour, weekly

One structure at a time, taught until it produces correct output without conscious effort rather than until it can be recited. Cases first, then adjective endings, then word order, then the verbs that split. Each one is tested in free writing rather than in an exercise, because an exercise prompts the very thing being tested.

  • One system per block, not a survey of several
  • Tested in free writing, never only in gap-fill exercises
  • Marked work annotated by error type as well as by criterion
  • A short written note of which system is next and why

Written production and text types

Once the structures hold, attention moves to Paper 1: the task choice, the text type conventions, and sustaining a register across 250 to 400 words at Standard Level or 450 to 600 at Higher Level. Timed tasks every fortnight, marked to the published criteria with the criterion letter beside each comment.

  • Timed task every second week, written inside the session
  • Two or three text types taught to checklist level
  • Konjunktiv II and subordinate clauses added for range
  • The same text type repeated so the comparison holds

Oral preparation block

A focused run before the school's internal recording window. At Standard Level the task works from a visual stimulus linked to a prescribed theme; at Higher Level from an extract of one of the two literary works. For a candidate who may be one of three in their year, unscripted practice with a stranger is the scarce commodity.

  • Unfamiliar stimuli or extracts under the real time constraint
  • Unseen follow-up questions, practised until recovery is quick
  • Rehearsals recorded and reviewed with the criteria open
  • No tutor presence at or input into the assessed recording

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Abu Dhabi

The tutors below teach IB German B over live video to Diploma students in the emirate. Each marks practice work by error type as well as by criterion, which is what makes a German grammar pattern visible inside three tasks. In the trial lesson, ask how they would teach adjective endings - the answer is unusually revealing.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What makes German B different from the other language B courses

  • Same assessment shape as the other language B courses, different difficulty profile
  • German losses are morphological and systematic rather than scattered
  • Error types repeat, so they can be counted and targeted
  • Closing one system removes a whole class of error at once

Every language B course assesses the same three components and uses the same criteria, so on paper German, French and Spanish B are the same subject in different words. In a tutoring room they are not. French B difficulty is weighted towards listening and towards text-type conventions. Spanish B difficulty is weighted towards the verb system and the subjunctive. German B difficulty is weighted towards morphology and word order, and that concentration changes what a session should contain.

The practical effect is visible in marked work. A French B student's written task tends to be fluent with the wrong register or the wrong task response. A German B student's task tends to answer the question well and bleed marks through endings - a wrong case after a preposition, an adjective ending drawn from the wrong pattern, a participle left in the middle of the clause. The message is intact and the language criterion absorbs the damage steadily.

That is good news, because morphological error is systematic. It repeats, which means it can be counted, and it comes from a missing rule rather than from missing vocabulary. A student who stops making one whole class of ending error has not improved incrementally; they have closed a leak. This is why German B rewards annotating marked work by error type as well as by criterion letter, and why three tasks are usually enough to identify which system is absent rather than guessing at it.

02

The case system: where German B marks actually go

German has four cases and they are not a decorative feature of the grammar; they are how the language marks who is doing what to whom. The case is selected by the job the noun does in the clause, by the preposition in front of it, or by the verb governing it. Articles, pronouns and adjective endings all change accordingly, so a single wrong case decision propagates into three visible errors in one phrase.

Most students arrive half-knowing this. They have the nominative and accusative reasonably secure, have met the dative as a list of prepositions to memorise, and treat the genitive as optional. The predictable results are a dative preposition followed by an accusative article, a two-way preposition used without thinking about whether movement or position is meant, and a verb that takes the dative being given a direct object instead.

Teaching this well means teaching the triggers rather than the tables. A student who can ask one question - what is selecting this case here - reaches the right answer far more reliably than one reciting a chart. The two-way prepositions get their own treatment, because the movement-or-position decision is the single most common case error in Abu Dhabi marked work we see, and it is also the fastest to fix once a student knows the question to ask. The genitive deserves one deliberate block of its own as well. Students avoid it, avoidance caps the language mark, and a handful of set phrases bring it back into use within a fortnight.

THE FOUR CASES, THEIR TRIGGERS AND THE USUAL ERROR
CaseWhat selects itThe usual errorWhere it shows up in the paper
NominativeThe subject of the clause, and after verbs like seinRarely wrong, but misidentified when word order is invertedWritten tasks with a front-loaded adverbial
AccusativeDirect object; a fixed set of prepositions; movement with two-way prepositionsUsed after dative-only prepositions out of habitEvery written task, repeatedly
DativeIndirect object; dative-only prepositions; certain verbsTreated as a list to memorise rather than a trigger to recogniseWritten tasks and reading comprehension inference
GenitivePossession and a small set of prepositionsAvoided entirely, which caps the language markNoticeable in reading; absent from most student writing
Two-way prepositionsAccusative for movement, dative for positionChosen without asking which meaning is intendedThe most frequent single case error in marked work
03

Word order: the bracket, and the verb that goes last

  • Conjugated verb second in a statement, whatever comes first
  • Other verb parts to the end, forming the bracket
  • Whole verb assembly to the end in a subordinate clause
  • Volume at low complexity, not explanation, makes it automatic

German word order is rule-governed and unforgiving. In a statement the conjugated verb sits second, whatever comes first. Any other verb parts - an infinitive after a modal, a past participle in the perfect tense, a separable prefix - go to the end of the clause, forming a bracket that encloses everything in between. In a subordinate clause the whole verb assembly moves to the end. Once a student sees these as one pattern rather than three rules, their writing changes quickly.

What breaks under pressure is the bracket. A student writing at speed produces an English word order with German words, which is intelligible and scores poorly, because range and accuracy are both judged. The repair is to practise the bracket deliberately in short sentences until it is the default, then extend. Attempting complex subordinate structures before the bracket is automatic produces collapsed sentences that score below correct simple ones.

Separable verbs are the same problem wearing a different hat. The prefix detaches and travels to the end, and students who know this perfectly well in an exercise forget it the moment they are concentrating on content. The fix is volume at low complexity: many short sentences with separable verbs, written fast, until the prefix lands at the end without thought. Ten minutes of that beats an hour of explanation, which is true of most of German. It also transfers directly to the oral, where word order is the first casualty of nerves and the easiest thing for an examiner to hear.

04

Adjective endings, taught as one decision rather than three tables

  • One decision with three branches, not three unrelated tables
  • Ask what the preceding word has already marked
  • Practise in free writing, where attention is divided
  • Count errors by type and show the student the count

Adjective endings are where German B students lose confidence, and almost always because of how they were taught. Presented as three separate tables - after a definite article, after an indefinite article, after nothing - they look like a hundred and twenty facts. Presented as one decision, they are a question with three branches: what kind of word came before this adjective, and has it already shown the case and gender clearly?

That single reframing does most of the work. If the preceding word has already marked case and gender unambiguously, the adjective takes the minimal ending. If it has not, the adjective carries the heavier ending that does the marking instead. The pattern after an indefinite article sits between the two precisely because the indefinite article is ambiguous in some slots and not others. Students who hold that logic stop guessing.

Practice then has to be in free writing rather than in tables, because the test is whether the decision is made while attention is elsewhere. We mark these errors by type, count them across three tasks, and show the student the count rather than describing the problem. A student who sees that eleven of fourteen language annotations in a task were adjective endings understands the priority immediately, and that is a more efficient conversation than any amount of encouragement. It also tells a parent where the next six weeks should go, in one line, without anybody needing to read German.

05

The three components, and the German difficulty each exposes

Paper 1 is written production and carries a quarter of the grade, 250 to 400 words at Standard Level and 450 to 600 at Higher Level. It is where morphology is most exposed, because sustained writing gives the case system and the adjective endings many chances to fail. Paper 2 holds listening and reading and carries half the grade, and in German the specific listening difficulty is the bracket: the word that completes the meaning often arrives at the end of a long clause.

The individual oral carries the final quarter, is conducted and marked inside your child's school, and is moderated by the IB. At Standard Level it runs from a visual stimulus linked to a prescribed theme; at Higher Level from an extract of one of the two literary works studied. For a German B candidate in a cohort of three or four, the scarce resource is unscripted conversation with someone who is not their teacher, and that shortage shows up directly in the interaction marks.

Current timings, task counts and criterion wording are set out in the IB subject guide held by your child's school. We work from it and do not reproduce or supply IB documents, past papers or mark schemes - those are the school's to provide and the IB's to publish. Ask the DP coordinator for the component breakdown and the internal oral deadline in writing at the start of DP1; both take one email and both change how the two years are planned.

Online or an in-home tutor in Abu Dhabi: the honest comparison

Parents searching for a German tutor in this emirate usually start by looking for someone local, and it is worth being straightforward about what that gets you and what it costs. The in-home market is real, it is priced higher because travel is priced in, and its availability is limited by who lives within a reasonable drive of your address. For a widely taught subject that is a mild constraint. For German B in Abu Dhabi, where candidates number in the handfuls, it is a severe one.

IB Gram does not provide in-person tutoring in Abu Dhabi, and we would rather say so on this page than after a booking. Lessons here are one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with a shared document so written work is watched as it is produced. That is not a compromise dressed up as a feature: for a grammar-led subject, the screen is where the marked task, the annotation and the error count actually live, and nothing has to survive a school bag.

The table below compares the options on the things that differ, with rates as published by the sources named rather than as our own price list. Two points deserve emphasis. Travel time in Abu Dhabi is not symmetrical - an island address and a mainland address face very different constraints - and a tutor's willingness to travel narrows the pool of subject specialists far more than it narrows the pool of general language teachers.

Is your tutor permitted to teach privately in the UAE?

Private tutoring in the UAE is a permitted activity with a specific route, not an unregulated one, and this is a fair question for any parent to ask. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. According to the federal government's own service information, the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged fifteen to eighteen, and university students.

MoHRE's service page for the permit is listed as the issuance of a new work permit for private tutor licensing, states no fees, gives a two-working-day completion time, and directs applicants to the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system. That is the official route, and it is the one to check against rather than any tutoring company's description of itself. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so no amount appears here.

There is a further point specific to Abu Dhabi. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct to similar effect. Treat that as press-reported and verify it against the current ADEK policy document. The practical upshot for a parent is simple: your child's own subject teacher is not the right person to engage privately.

What six weeks of German fixes, and what needs a year

  • Six weeks: the bracket, the adjective-ending decision, two-way prepositions, Konjunktiv II
  • A year: the full case system unprompted, the genitive, reading speed, range
  • A DP2 plan targets the two most frequent error types, then the oral
  • No grade is promised here, and no outcome statistics are published

German rewards honesty about timescales because its systems do not negotiate. In six weeks of one hour a week with written homework, a student can make the verbal bracket automatic in short sentences, learn the adjective-ending decision as a single question, stop the most common two-way preposition error, and acquire Konjunktiv II for politeness - which is a disproportionate gain in both the oral and the written task for very little effort.

What needs a year is the full case system working unprompted in extended writing, the genitive moving from avoided to used, reading speed through subordinate clauses and compound nouns, and the range of structures that lifts a written task above the simple register. Those improve in steps rather than smoothly, with visible plateaus between them, and no tutor can promise a particular grade in this subject or any other. No outcome statistics appear anywhere on this site, because we could not show you the data behind them.

If your child is in DP2 with limited time, the order inverts and narrows. Count the error types in a recent marked task, fix the two most frequent, make the bracket automatic, and put the remaining hours into the oral block because it carries a quarter of the grade against a fixed internal school deadline. That is a smaller claim than a transformation and it is the one we would rather be judged on. Tell us the internal deadline in the first message and the hours get allocated against it rather than against a syllabus list.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

German B families in the emirate cluster around particular communities and particular industries, and the practical constraints differ by area. These are the patterns rather than a district list.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Long-established international households in the western part of the island. Several German-speaking families here maintain the language socially, which produces confident speakers whose written German has never been assessed.

Saadiyat Island

Larger Diploma cohorts, within which German B may run with three or four candidates. Close teacher attention and almost no peer practice, so the conversational section of the oral is usually the weak point.

Al Reem Island

A high proportion of recent arrivals, including families relocating from Europe mid-Diploma. These students often have strong grammar taught differently and need the IB's conventions rather than more German.

Al Nahyan and Al Mushrif

Central areas with short school runs and crowded activity calendars. The weekday slot fills quickly, and a grammar-systems session works better early in the week than after a late sports fixture.

Khalifa City and Al Raha

Engineering and energy-sector households are well represented here, and German is often a home language maintained alongside English schooling. Written structure is the gap, not fluency.

Yas Island and Al Jubail Island

Long runs in both directions and small school cohorts. Online delivery is what makes a fixed weekly slot possible at all, since no travel variable can disturb it.

Masdar City and Al Falah

Smaller professional communities where a student may be the only German B candidate in their year group. Outside practice with a specialist matters more here than anywhere else in the emirate.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island Diploma cohorts where German B runs

German is offered in a minority of the emirate's IB schools and usually to very small numbers. Where it runs, the teaching is close and the practice volume is low, which is a different problem from poor teaching and needs a different answer.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a recent marked piece of German writing

One marked task is worth more than a description of the problem, because German errors are systematic and visible. We count them by type - case, adjective ending, word order, verb position - and the count usually identifies the missing system straight away. Add the level, the school and the internal oral deadline if you have it.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson with a short written task in it

One lesson, free, with no card details and no obligation to continue. Your child writes a short piece under time and reads a short passage aloud, which together show whether the problem is morphology, word order or vocabulary. You keep the annotated task whatever you decide about booking.

  3. 03

One system at a time, until it is automatic

Cases and their triggers, then the adjective-ending decision, then the bracket, then the verbs that split. Each is tested in free writing rather than in exercises, because an exercise prompts the very thing being tested. Volume at low complexity is what makes a structure automatic, not explanation.

  4. 04

Written production and text types from the second phase

Once the structures hold, timed tasks every fortnight marked to the published criteria, with two or three text types taught to checklist level and Konjunktiv II and subordinate clauses added for range. The same text type returns later so the comparison is honest rather than rhetorical.

  5. 05

If no German B specialist is free, we say so

German B is one of the narrower specialisms we cover, and Higher Level with the literary works narrower still. If we cannot match your child to a tutor who has prepared that oral task, we will give you a date rather than substitute a German speaker without IB experience and leave you to find out in a mock.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Grammar taught as systems, not as exceptions

Cases by their triggers, adjective endings as one decision with three branches, word order as a bracket rather than three separate rules. A student who holds the logic stops guessing, and closing one system removes a whole class of error rather than improving a percentage.

Errors counted by type, and shown to the student

Marked work is annotated by error type as well as by criterion letter. A student who sees that eleven of fourteen language annotations were adjective endings understands the priority immediately, which is a faster conversation than any amount of general encouragement.

Unscripted practice, which small cohorts cannot provide

A German B candidate may be one of three or four in their year group, with close teaching and almost no peer conversation. The interaction marks in the oral are exactly what that shortage costs, and practice with someone who is not their teacher is the scarce commodity.

Online, and said plainly

Lessons are one to one over live video on Gulf Standard Time with a shared document. IB Gram does not run in-home visits in Abu Dhabi, and this page says so and compares the options honestly rather than leaving you to discover it. For German B the trade strongly favours reach over proximity.

Regulator facts cited, never implied

The permit section on this page quotes the federal service pages and names MoHRE and ADEK as the sources of their own rules. IB Gram holds no accreditation, licence or partnership from the IB or from any UAE regulator and claims none, and no fine amounts appear here because none have been published.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Does my child need the German cases secure before starting German B?+

Not secure, but not absent either. German B assumes previous experience, and most students arrive with the nominative and accusative reasonably reliable, the dative half-learned as a list of prepositions, and the genitive avoided. That is a workable starting point. What matters is that the case system is taught by its triggers rather than by charts during DP1, because a wrong case decision propagates into the article and then into the adjective ending, costing three visible marks in one phrase.

Why does my child keep getting adjective endings wrong when they know the tables?+

Because tables are recalled deliberately and endings have to be produced while attention is on content. Presented as three separate tables the endings look like well over a hundred facts; presented as one decision they are a single question - what has the preceding word already marked, case and gender clearly or not? Students who hold that logic stop guessing. The practice then has to be in free writing rather than in gap-fill exercises, since an exercise prompts the very thing being tested.

What is the verbal bracket, and why does it matter so much in German?+

In a German statement the conjugated verb sits second, whatever comes first, and any other verb parts - an infinitive after a modal, a past participle, a separable prefix - travel to the end of the clause. Together they form a bracket enclosing everything between. In a subordinate clause the whole verb assembly goes to the end. It matters because it is the first thing to collapse under time pressure, producing English word order with German words, which is intelligible and scores poorly.

How is IB German B assessed at Standard and Higher Level?+

Three components. Paper 1 is written production, a quarter of the grade, 250 to 400 words at Standard Level and 450 to 600 at Higher. Paper 2 holds listening and reading and carries half. The individual oral carries the final quarter, is conducted and marked inside the school and then moderated by the IB. Higher Level adds two literary works written in German and replaces the visual-stimulus oral with one built on an extract from one of them. There is no coursework essay.

Which German varieties will my child hear in the listening paper?+

Material is drawn from the German-speaking world, so Austrian and Swiss voices appear alongside standard German, and regional colouring is normal in authentic recordings. The bigger German-specific listening difficulty is structural rather than accentual: the word that completes the meaning often arrives at the end of a long clause, so a student decoding left to right has committed to an interpretation before the verb lands. Training a student to hold the clause is worth more than accent drills.

Is German B harder than French or Spanish B?+

It is differently hard. All three use the same assessment shape and the same criteria, so the difference is where the difficulty concentrates. German loads it onto morphology and word order, which are systematic and therefore teachable in blocks. Spanish loads it onto the verb system and the subjunctive. French loads it onto listening and onto register and text-type conventions. German suits a student willing to learn structures properly and frustrates one who prefers to absorb a language by exposure.

My child was at a German-curriculum school. Should they take German B or German A?+

That depends on their written German rather than on their speaking, and the school decides. A student educated in German is usually a German A candidate, where the subject is literature and language analysis rather than language acquisition. A student from a German-speaking household but schooled in English often speaks fluently and has never written assessed German, which is a German B profile with a conventions gap. A timed written task settles it quickly, and taking that evidence to the DP coordinator is more productive than arguing from fluency.

Do schools in Abu Dhabi actually offer German B?+

A minority do, usually to very small numbers, and some run it only when enough students request it. Where it runs, teaching is close and practice volume is inevitably low, which is a different problem from poor teaching and needs a different answer. Ask the school two questions before DP1: whether German B will run in your child's cohort, and whether Higher Level is available. The answers determine whether outside support is a convenience or a necessity.

Can my child take German B if their school does not offer it?+

Some schools permit a student to take a language as a self-taught or externally supported subject and some do not, and the arrangement has registration implications with the IB. This must be confirmed in writing by the school before DP1 rather than assumed, because a late discovery is very difficult to resolve. Where it is permitted, outside support carries far more of the load than usual, and the oral and the literary works at Higher Level are the parts that need the most structure.

What does a German tutor charge per hour in Abu Dhabi?+

Published UAE rates, mostly quoted for Dubai, give the range. Tutopiya advertises from about AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 at the budget end. Unitors lists IGCSE tutoring from around AED 150 and IB from AED 200, TutorChase quotes about AED 270, and Bestimate's 2026 rate table puts specialist exam-year support at roughly AED 200 to 450 and above. Visiting tutors run from about AED 180 to 500 once travel is priced in. Those are their figures, not our price list.

Is a visiting tutor better than online lessons for German in this emirate?+

For German specifically the answer tilts strongly towards online, because the pool of local specialists is tiny. A visiting arrangement limits you to tutors who live within a reasonable drive, which for a widely taught subject is a mild constraint and for German B at Diploma level is a severe one. IB Gram does not provide in-person tutoring in Abu Dhabi in any case, and for a grammar-led subject the shared screen is where the marked task, the annotations and the error counts actually live.

How do I check that a private tutor in Abu Dhabi holds the right permit?+

Ask directly, and expect a straight answer. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and, according to the federal service information, is granted free of charge for two years to categories including registered teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents and students. MoHRE's own service page lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published.

What may a German tutor do with work my child submits to school?+

Teach, question, model and give feedback - nothing beyond that. A tutor may mark practice tasks against the published criteria, count errors by type, rehearse the oral with unfamiliar stimuli or extracts and review recordings with the criteria open. A tutor has no part in the assessed recording, supplies no content for it, and sees no assessed written work before the school does. At Higher Level the literary works are read and discussed with the student, never summarised for them to reproduce.

How quickly can German grammar errors actually be fixed?+

In steps rather than smoothly, and the steps are predictable. Six weeks of one hour a week with written homework can make the verbal bracket automatic in short sentences, convert adjective endings into a single decision, remove the most common two-way preposition error, and add Konjunktiv II for politeness. A year is the honest figure for the full case system working unprompted in extended writing, for the genitive moving from avoided to used, and for reading speed through subordinate clauses and compound nouns.

Will German help with a university application from the UAE?+

A language acquisition grade contributes to the Diploma total universities read, and German specifically matters for applications to German-speaking countries, where public universities may require a recognised language qualification for German-taught programmes - check the individual institution rather than relying on a general answer. For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency, the British-track rules are published but no IB points threshold has been read on an official Ministry source for this page, so verify that on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority.

Send one marked task and we will count the errors

German is the language where a single marked page tells you most. Send a recent piece of your child's written German and we will count the errors by type - case, adjective ending, verb position, word order - which usually identifies the missing system immediately. The trial lesson is free, takes no card details and carries no obligation, and your child keeps the annotated task whatever you decide. Add the level, the school and the internal oral deadline if you know it, and the plan is built around that date.
