IB DP Environmental Systems and Societies Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Environmental Systems and Societies tutor in Abu Dhabi is quoted at roughly AED 180 to AED 400 an hour, and the gap between those two numbers is almost never about difficulty. It is about scarcity, marking and who is sitting at the other end of the call. This page sets out what the Abu Dhabi market charges for Diploma-level ESS help, which parts of the course push a quote upwards, and how IB Gram runs the subject: one-to-one, live online, in Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial lesson.

  • One-to-one live online sessions in Gulf Standard Time, never group classes
  • A rate per 60 minutes agreed before you book, with no joining fee
  • Tutors who have taught the current ESS guide and its individual investigation
  • Written feedback on the student's own work after every session

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What an ESS tutor costs in Abu Dhabi, before anyone sells you a package

Environmental Systems and Societies is the only Diploma subject that can be counted in two groups at once, and that single administrative fact shapes its tutoring market. An Abu Dhabi family looking for Biology help finds a crowded field within an afternoon. The same family looking for ESS finds two or three names, both already booked for the term. Scarcity, not difficulty, is what sets the price here. An IB DP Environmental Systems and Societies tutor in Abu Dhabi is commonly quoted between AED 180 and AED 400 an hour, and the quote usually arrives with no breakdown of what is inside it.

This page is built around that number rather than around adjectives. It sets out what providers in this market publish, which parts of the course push a quote upwards, what a block of individual-investigation review realistically costs, and what two years of weekly support adds to a school bill that ADEK has already approved. Every figure is attributed to the provider or the rate survey that published it. None of it is an IB Gram price list: our sessions begin with a free trial lesson, and the rate per 60 minutes is agreed with you before anything is booked.

Delivery changes the arithmetic as much as experience does. IB Gram teaches UAE students one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, drawing on tutors who are not limited to the people able to drive to your street before dinner. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi; home visits are a service we run only in India. We say that in the first hundred words because a family paying a premium hourly rate for a tutor's travel deserves to know that part of the fee is paying for the car, not the teaching.

The subject itself explains where the hours go. ESS asks a student to handle systems language, environmental value systems, named case studies and real data in the same answer, then to design and report an individual investigation worth a quarter of the final grade. Under the current subject guide the course is available at Higher Level as well as Standard Level, which is a change from the previous guide. Confirm with your school's IB coordinator which level your child is entered for and which guide the cohort is following, because schools in the emirate moved at different speeds.

Who this page is for: a parent in Khalifa City or on Saadiyat Island comparing two quotes, a DP2 family whose investigation has stalled in March, or a DP1 family deciding whether to start now at a lower intensity or later at a higher one. Where a figure is not verifiable, this page says so and points at the authority that publishes it. Where no ESS specialist is free in the hour you want, we say that too, rather than selling you a generalist at a specialist rate.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

ESS sits in the Diploma Programme, but Abu Dhabi families usually arrive with a longer history: a Middle Years student choosing group 3 and group 4 options, or a Primary Years child whose school is already running an inquiry unit on water. Here is what each stage needs, and what it costs in attention rather than only in dirhams.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The two years where ESS is examined. Students handle two written papers and an individual investigation worth a quarter of the subject grade. The written papers reward precise systems vocabulary, correctly read data and named case studies; the investigation rewards a question narrow enough to answer with the data a student can actually gather. Most Abu Dhabi families buy support in DP1 term two, when the investigation is chosen, or in DP2 term one, when the first marked paper comes back lower than expected.

Abu Dhabi cohorts for ESS are small, often a single class across a whole year group, and sometimes taught by a Geography or Biology specialist covering the subject. That is not a criticism of the schools; it is the practical reason a one-to-one tutor who has taught the current guide is worth a different rate here than a general science tutor would be.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The years in which the group choice is actually made. Individuals and Societies and Sciences both feed ESS, and a student who has written a good MYP science investigation has already met half the skills the Diploma investigation needs: a research question, a controlled variable, a graph that answers something. Support at this stage is cheaper per hour than Diploma work and often removes the need for crisis hours later.

Several Abu Dhabi schools run Middle Years eAssessment and several do not, and the difference changes what a Year 11 student arrives with. Families on the island and in the Al Raha corridor frequently move between British and IB schools mid-stage, so we check which assessment model the child has actually sat before pricing a block of work.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Primary work has no bearing on an ESS grade, but it is where the habit of evidence starts. A Year 5 child who can explain why a measurement was repeated is doing the thing the Diploma investigation marks years later. Primary support in Abu Dhabi is quoted well below Diploma rates, and parents usually book it for English and mathematics rather than for environmental topics.

Arabic, Islamic Education and social studies run alongside the licensed international curriculum in UAE private schools as a federal requirement, so a Primary timetable in Abu Dhabi is fuller than the same school's timetable abroad. We factor that into session length rather than pretending a tired child learns the same at 7pm.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

A smaller route in this emirate, combining Diploma courses with a career-related study. Students taking ESS as one of their Diploma courses within a Career-related Programme are assessed on the same subject guide, with the same investigation weighting, so the tutoring work is identical even though the overall certificate differs.

Because the Career-related Programme is rarer in Abu Dhabi than the full Diploma, families often cannot find anyone locally who has taught a student on this route. Online matching removes that problem; it is the clearest case in this emirate where geography was the only thing limiting the choice of tutor.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Most families who book ESS support book a second subject within the year, usually because the two share a skill rather than a topic. These are the Diploma courses our Abu Dhabi tutors cover alongside Environmental Systems and Societies, with what each one actually assesses.

Environmental Systems and Societies

SL and HL under the current guide

Systems thinking, environmental value systems, named case studies and the individual investigation. Marks are lost on vague terminology, case studies used without data, and investigations whose research question is far wider than the evidence collected. Sessions usually split between paper technique and investigation structure.

Biology

HL and SL

The subject families most often compare ESS against. Content volume is far higher and the command terms are stricter. Students who switch from ESS to Biology usually underestimate the recall load; students who switch the other way underestimate how much writing ESS demands.

Geography

HL and SL

Shares case-study discipline and the habit of naming a place, a date and a figure in every answer. An Abu Dhabi student taking both can reuse one well-researched regional case study across subjects, provided the framing is rewritten for each syllabus.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Where ESS students taking it alongside often lose time. Energy, equilibrium and organic chemistry carry the highest failure rate in our Abu Dhabi caseload. Tutoring tends to focus on multi-step calculation layout, because marks are lost in presentation as often as in understanding.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

The statistical content here overlaps directly with what an ESS investigation needs: correlation, significance, sampling. A student weak in this course usually produces an investigation whose data analysis stops at a bar chart.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The route most Abu Dhabi engineering and medicine applicants are pushed towards. It is not the better fit for an ESS student by default, and the choice should be made against the specific university requirement rather than reputation.

Physics

HL and SL

Energy flow, efficiency and thermodynamics appear in ESS in simplified form. Students taking both find the ESS treatment frustratingly qualitative; the fix is learning which command terms expect a number and which expect an argument.

Sports, Exercise and Health Science

HL and SL

The other group 4 subject with a smaller cohort in Abu Dhabi. Like ESS, it carries an investigation involving data from real participants, and the same scarcity of specialist teachers pushes its market rate upwards in this emirate.

Economics

HL and SL

Externalities, market failure and sustainability sit in both syllabuses with different vocabulary. Students taking both can be marked down for importing economic terms into an ESS answer where the examiner expects systems language.

Global Politics

HL and SL

Shares the ESS habit of weighing competing value positions. The engagement activity and the ESS investigation both reward a narrow, researchable question, so students taking both often benefit from planning the two in the same session.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The ESS idea of an environmental value system maps neatly onto knowledge questions about perspective and bias. Students who understand one tend to write better in the other, and a single tutor can keep the two consistent.

Extended Essay

Core

A popular choice in ESS and a common place for an Abu Dhabi student to stall. Support is process coaching: narrowing the question, checking the research is feasible in this climate and this city, and reading what the student has already written.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Abu Dhabi families buy ESS support, with what each typically costs in hours rather than in promises. All of it runs online, one-to-one, over live video, with the student's own work on screen.

Weekly one-to-one across the term

A fixed 60-minute slot each week through the term, alternating between paper technique and whatever the school has just taught. This is the cheapest route per unit of progress because nothing has to be re-explained from scratch, and it is the only mode in which a tutor can see a pattern in the mistakes rather than a single bad paper.

  • One hour a week, same slot, Gulf Standard Time
  • Written note after each session naming what was practised and what was set
  • Marked work returned before the next session rather than at the end of the block
  • Pausable for school examination weeks and travel

Individual investigation review block

A six to eight hour block bought as a unit, spread across the weeks a student is working on the investigation. The tutor questions the research question, checks the method can actually produce data, reads what the student has written and marks a practice version against the published criteria. The writing is the student's throughout.

  • Stage-by-stage review rather than one read of a finished document
  • Feasibility check on data collection in this climate and this city
  • Marking of a practice version against the criteria the school will apply
  • A written list of what the student must change, in their own words

Pre-examination intensive

A short, dense run of sessions in the weeks before the May session, built on marked past questions rather than fresh content. It is the most expensive way to buy improvement per dirham, because the hours are compressed and specialist availability is tightest exactly then, but it is the right purchase when term-time support was not booked.

  • Two or three sessions a week for four to six weeks
  • Timed questions marked and returned within 24 hours
  • Focus on command terms and data questions, not on new content
  • Booked early, because specialist slots in April disappear first

What the Abu Dhabi market charges for Diploma ESS help

  • Ask every quote the same four questions: who teaches, is marking included, is feedback written, what is the cancellation rule
  • A rate quoted per lesson rather than per hour hides a 45-minute session surprisingly often
  • Monthly packages look cheaper and usually assume a session count you will not always use
  • No provider in this market can price an ESS specialist as if they were a Biology tutor and still find one

A Diploma-level ESS tutor working with Abu Dhabi students is quoted at roughly AED 180 to AED 400 an hour. Below that band you are usually buying a university student with no experience of the subject guide; above it you are usually buying a reputation. The band itself is assembled from figures providers in this market have published, not from an average we invented, and the table below names who charges what.

Three of the six most visible competitor pages in this search publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars, which is not the currency a UAE family transacts in. That silence is why parents ring four agencies and get four unexplained numbers. The useful comparison is not tutor against tutor but model against model: an agency, a marketplace, an independent tutor and a tuition centre are selling genuinely different things at genuinely different costs.

Read the table as a map of what the money buys rather than as a price list. The right-hand column matters more than the rate: a lower hourly figure with no marking and no written feedback is often more expensive per unit of progress than a higher one that returns a marked paper every week. Rates quoted here are the published figures of the providers named, as read in October 2026, and any of them may change without notice. One more thing worth knowing before you ring round: nobody in this market prices ESS separately from the other Diploma sciences on their public page, so the figure you are quoted on the phone for this subject is frequently higher than the figure advertised, and the reason given is availability rather than difficulty.

Six things that move the number on an Abu Dhabi ESS quote

  • Timing: October planning versus April scarcity is the single biggest swing
  • Scarcity: an ESS specialist is rarer in this emirate than a Biology specialist, and priced accordingly
  • Component: paper practice is cheaper per hour than investigation review, which is bought as a block
  • Inclusions: marking and written feedback cost the tutor time and sit inside any honest rate
  • Delivery: an in-home figure includes travel; an online figure does not, which is most of the difference
  • Continuity: a weekly slot costs less per unit of progress than the same hours bought in a panic

The same tutor will quote two Abu Dhabi families different numbers for the same subject, and the reasons are mundane. Time of year is the largest single factor: a slot in October is a scheduling decision, a slot in April is an auction. Specialist scarcity is the second, and it bites harder in ESS than in any other group 4 subject because the cohorts are small and the teaching pool is smaller.

Level is a smaller factor than parents assume. The jump from Standard to Higher Level in this subject adds content and depth, but it does not double the hourly rate; what changes is the number of hours needed, not the price of each one. The component being supported matters far more. An hour of paper technique is ordinary teaching. An hour spent on an investigation that is already three weeks late involves reading, marking and a conversation about what cannot be fixed, which is why review blocks are priced as blocks.

Then there is what the rate includes, which is where most of the real variation hides. Marking takes a tutor roughly as long as teaching. A provider who returns a marked paper every week and a written session note has built that time into the figure; one who quotes AED 150 and sends nothing has not. Finally, delivery: an in-home rate in this emirate carries the drive, and from Khalifa City to the island at 5pm that is a real cost someone is paying.

03

The individual investigation is where most of the money goes

The individual investigation carries a quarter of the ESS grade and consumes more tutoring hours than the written papers combined. The reason is sequencing. A student who chooses a research question too wide in week one will produce data that cannot answer it in week six, and no amount of late help repairs a question that was wrong at the start. The cheapest version of this subject is the one where someone sensible looks at the question before any data is collected.

What a tutor may do here is tightly bounded, and the boundary is not a policy preference but an IB academic-honesty rule. The student designs, collects, analyses and writes. A tutor asks questions, checks a method is safe and repeatable, points at a criterion the student has not addressed, and marks a practice version so the student can see the gap. A tutor who hands back a rewritten document has put the student's whole Diploma at risk, and we will not do it.

The table below is the version of this we give Abu Dhabi families on the phone: the stages, what the student owns, what a tutor can legitimately contribute, and roughly how many hours each stage absorbs. Hours are what we observe across our own caseload rather than a published standard, and a student who starts in DP1 uses fewer of them than one who starts in February of DP2. The pattern we see in Abu Dhabi is that the first two stages are the ones families skip and the last two are the ones they pay most for, which is the wrong way round: an hour spent narrowing a question in November removes several hours of repair work in March.

Why an ESS specialist is harder to find in Abu Dhabi than a Biology tutor

  • Small cohorts mean few experienced ESS teachers in any one emirate
  • Option blocks change year to year, so a school's ESS experience can lapse
  • ADEK ethics rules, as reported, close off your child's own school teacher
  • Online delivery widens the pool from one neighbourhood to the whole subject

Three things make this subject scarce in the emirate at once. The cohorts are small: an Abu Dhabi school may run one ESS class in a year group of a hundred and twenty, and a school that drops the option for a year produces no experienced teachers at all. The subject is often taught by a Geography or Biology specialist covering it rather than by someone who chose it, which is perfectly workable in a classroom and less so when a parent wants an hour of focused investigation review.

The third reason is regulatory, and it is specific to Abu Dhabi. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes teachers being barred from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, with teachers working outside school hours expected to hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit, whose code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with their own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it. The practical effect on a parent is simple: the one person who knows your child's course best is not available to you privately.

That is the honest case for online matching, and it is an arithmetic case rather than a marketing one. A family that insists on someone who can drive to Khalifa City is choosing from the people who live near Khalifa City and are free at 6pm. A family that accepts a live video session is choosing from everyone who has taught the current ESS guide. In a subject this thinly staffed, that is the difference between a specialist and whoever is nearest.

05

Online or in-home in Abu Dhabi: what the extra AED buys

In-home tutoring is a real and legitimate market in this emirate, and parents who want it should understand what they are paying for. Published market rates for an in-home visit run from around AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, against roughly AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online. The premium is not teaching quality. It is forty minutes of driving, fuel, and the fact that the tutor can teach one fewer student that evening.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, and we would rather say that plainly than let a family discover it after a deposit. Home visits are a service we provide only in India. For UAE families every session is one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, with the student's own work shared on screen and marked copies returned afterwards. For a subject with no laboratory requirement and no equipment beyond a laptop, there is very little that a physical presence adds.

The comparison below is the one we would want as parents. It covers what each option is, what the market charges, what Abu Dhabi logistics do to it in practice, and who each option genuinely suits. A family with a child who will not work without an adult in the room should read the third row carefully; that is a real reason to choose a different model, and it is not a reason we would argue with.

06

Is the tutor you are paying permitted to teach privately in the UAE?

  • Ask any tutor directly whether they hold the MoHRE private tuition work permit
  • The permit is free and valid for two years; a quoted fee is a warning sign
  • No published fine schedule exists, so treat any quoted penalty figure as unverified
  • Check the official route at mohre.gov.ae rather than taking an agency's word for it

Private tutoring in this country is regulated by permit, and a parent can check the position without any specialist knowledge. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued through MoHRE, and is granted free of charge for two years. MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, with applications made through its smart app, website and e-services system. Anyone quoting you a permit fee has invented it.

The eligible categories are broader than most parents assume: teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No schedule of fine amounts has been published, so any specific figure circulating online should be treated as unverified, and this page will not repeat one.

Two further points matter in Abu Dhabi specifically. First, a tutoring operation with premises and staff is a different legal animal from an individual tutor and needs its own permit from the emirate authority; an individual working online from their own home does not become a training institute. Second, IB Gram is not approved, endorsed or certified by ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB or any examination board, and any provider telling you otherwise about themselves is making a claim you should ask them to evidence with a permit number.

07

Two years of ESS support, set against the rest of the school bill

Tutoring is a line in a much larger education budget, and it is worth sizing against the others before deciding how much is sensible. In Abu Dhabi, private school fees are set within a framework the emirate authority approves, and the school publishes its own band; a parent comparing tutoring cost to fees should read the school's current published fee schedule, approved at emirate level, rather than any figure an agency quotes. Across the border in Dubai, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees for the 2026-27 academic year, which gives some sense of the direction of travel in the market generally.

Against a fee of that scale, the choice is rarely whether to buy any support at all but when. A single weekly hour from DP1 term two to the May session of DP2 is a large number of hours at a moderate rate. A six-hour investigation block plus a four-week pre-examination intensive is a small number of hours at a high rate. Both are defensible. What is not defensible is paying specialist rates in April for content that should have been fixed in October.

The table sets out the components of a realistic two-year ESS budget using published market figures, with each row attributed. Treat the monthly package rows as what the market advertises rather than what IB Gram charges: our own rate is quoted per 60 minutes, after a free trial lesson, and no package is required to start.

Where ESS marks go missing, and what an hour can actually fix

  • Systems vocabulary used loosely is the single most common avoidable loss
  • An environmental value system must be identified and applied, not merely asserted
  • Case studies need a figure, a date and a mechanism to score beyond recall
  • Command terms decide the shape of the answer and are learned by marked practice
  • Local UAE examples are usually stronger than half-remembered textbook ones

The most common pattern in our Abu Dhabi ESS caseload is a student who understands the content and writes answers that score two marks below what they deserve. Four causes account for nearly all of it. The first is terminology: using sink, store and flow loosely in a subject where each word has a defined meaning. The second is the environmental value system, which students treat as an opinion to be stated rather than a position to be identified, applied and compared.

The third is the case study used without evidence. A named location with no figures, no date and no mechanism earns credit for recall and nothing for application. Abu Dhabi students have an advantage here that most of them ignore: desalination, district cooling, mangrove restoration and groundwater depletion are visible from the car window and documented by local authorities. A case study a student can actually describe in detail beats a textbook example they half remember.

The fourth is command terms. Evaluate, justify, outline and discuss each demand a different shape of answer, and a student who writes a good essay to the wrong instruction loses marks they never see. This is the cheapest thing to fix and the most reliably fixable: it is technique, not content, and a term of marked practice generally moves it. No tutor can promise a grade, and anyone who does is telling you something about themselves rather than about your child. What an hour a week can honestly offer is a marked paper, a named weakness and a specific thing to practise before the next one.

Where we tutor

Where in Abu Dhabi our ESS students live, and what that does to the price

Location changes a tutoring quote in this emirate more than most parents expect, because an in-home rate includes the drive and an online rate does not. These are the communities our Abu Dhabi ESS families come from, with the scheduling reality of each.

Saadiyat Island

Island villa families often have the earliest realistic start time, because school runs are short. An in-home tutor crossing from the mainland at 5pm adds a traffic premium to the hourly rate; an online session at 5pm does not.

Al Reem Island

Apartment living and a single causeway. Several families here tell us an in-home tutor cancelled twice over parking before they moved the subject online. ESS needs no equipment beyond a laptop, which makes it a straightforward subject to move.

Khalifa City

The densest cluster of our Abu Dhabi Diploma caseload. Villa compounds here sit a long drive from the island, so in-home quotes run at the upper end of the market band while the online rate stays flat.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

A corridor of international-school families with heavy after-school commitments. Sessions here are most often booked at 6.30pm or later, and a fixed weekly slot matters more than a cheap hourly rate.

Yas Island

Newer housing with long internal distances and event traffic on race and concert weekends. Families here plan around unpredictable Fridays, so we schedule ESS investigation reviews mid-week rather than at the weekend.

Al Bateen

Older island neighbourhood close to several long-established schools. Short commutes mean a 4.30pm start is realistic, which is the one slot where in-home and online pricing come closest together.

Al Mushrif

Central, well served by schools, and a community where multiple siblings in one household is common. Two children in the same subject block does not halve the rate, but it does remove a second set of travel costs from an in-home quote.

Masdar City and Khalifa Industrial Zone

A small but relevant cluster: students here live beside the sustainability infrastructure their ESS syllabus describes. Several investigations in our caseload have used local energy and water data rather than a textbook case study.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland communities where in-home tutoring is genuinely cheaper than on the island, because tutors live closer. The trade-off is a much smaller pool of people who have taught the Diploma, let alone ESS.

Al Reef and Al Falah

Outer communities where an in-home visit often means a 40-minute drive each way. This is where the online rate wins on arithmetic alone, before any argument about subject specialism is made.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat Island and the Corniche

Island schools with established Diploma cohorts. Group 3 and group 4 option blocks vary year to year, so confirm directly with the school whether ESS is running for your child's cohort and at which level before planning tutoring around it.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the subject, level and the deadline that worries you

A short message naming the school, the level and what has actually gone wrong is enough to start. For ESS we also ask whether the individual investigation has been chosen, because that single answer changes the shape and the cost of everything that follows.

  2. 02

We quote a rate per 60 minutes in writing

No package, no joining fee, no rate that changes after the first month. The quote states what is included: teaching, marking, a written session note and the cancellation rule. If a specialist is not free at the hour you need, we say so instead of offering a generalist at a specialist rate.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson with the tutor who would teach

Not a sales call with a coordinator. The student works on their own material for the hour, and afterwards you get a written view of where the marks are going and how many hours a realistic plan needs. If the match is wrong, we change the tutor rather than argue about it.

  4. 04

A fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time

The same hour each week, set around school, academy training and family travel. Slots can be moved during school examination weeks, and during Ramadan sessions commonly shift to after Iftar, which we plan for rather than treat as an exception.

  5. 05

    Written evidence after every session

A note naming what was practised, what was set and what the marked work showed. Over a term those notes are the record a parent can actually read, and they are how a vague worry about ESS turns into a specific list of components and command terms.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The rate is quoted before you commit

A number per 60 minutes, in writing, with inclusions listed. Three of the six most visible pages in this search publish no price at all and the two that do quote in dollars. A parent should not have to book a call to find out what an hour costs.

Market figures are attributed, not invented

Every AED band on this page is traceable to the provider or rate survey that published it, read in October 2026. Where a figure cannot be verified, including any fine for tutoring without a permit, this page says so and leaves the number out.

Specialists rather than whoever is nearest

ESS cohorts in this emirate are small and the local teaching pool is smaller. Online delivery means the choice is among tutors who have taught the current subject guide, not among the people free to drive to your community before dinner.

The academic-honesty line is stated, not blurred

The student designs, collects, analyses and writes. A tutor teaches, questions, marks practice work and names criteria that have not been met. We will not hand back a rewritten document, because that is a malpractice risk carried entirely by your child.

Delivery is described honestly

Every UAE session is one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi, and we say so on the page rather than after a deposit. No UAE office, no local branch, no claim to approval by ADEK or any examination board.

Scheduling built for this city

Island and mainland commutes, academy training, race weekends on Yas Island and post-Iftar slots during Ramadan all change when a session can realistically run. We plan the year around them instead of defaulting to a 4pm slot nobody can make.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does an hour of Diploma ESS support cost in Abu Dhabi right now?+

Published market rates for Diploma-level Environmental Systems and Societies support in this emirate run from roughly AED 180 to AED 400 an hour, read in October 2026. Below about AED 150 you are usually buying a non-specialist, often a university student teaching from a textbook rather than the subject guide. Above AED 500 you are paying a reputation premium, which may be justified and should be evidenced. IB Gram quotes a rate per 60 minutes in writing after a free trial lesson, with marking and a written session note included, so the figure you agree is the figure you pay.

Why do two Abu Dhabi tutors quote AED 200 and AED 450 for the same subject?+

Usually because they are selling different things. The lower quote tends to cover teaching only, with no marking, no written feedback and no investigation review. The higher one typically includes a marked paper each week, a session note, and a tutor who has taught the current ESS guide rather than a related science. Timing matters too: the same tutor charges differently for an October slot and an April one, because specialist availability collapses before the May session. Ask both providers the same four questions about marking, feedback, cover and cancellation, and the gap usually explains itself.

Is a monthly ESS package better value than paying by the hour in Abu Dhabi?+

It depends entirely on whether you use the sessions. Advertised UAE packages include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits. Divide by the session count and compare against the hourly rate: a package is only cheaper if you actually sit every session, and families travelling over half-term or sitting school examinations frequently do not. IB Gram does not require a package. The rate is per 60 minutes, agreed in advance, and unused weeks are simply not charged.

Does the rate rise in the weeks before the May examinations?+

Rates for an existing weekly slot should not change mid-term, and ours do not. What changes is availability, which has the same effect on your wallet. By March and April the specialists who have taught the current ESS guide are largely booked, so the remaining options are either less experienced or priced at the top of the band. A family that wants pre-examination intensive support at a sensible rate should book the slot in the autumn term and scale the hours up later, rather than trying to buy specialist time in the final six weeks.

Can we buy support for the individual investigation alone?+

Yes, and it is the most common single purchase Abu Dhabi families make in this subject. A review block of six to eight hours is spread across the weeks the student is working, rather than spent on one read of a finished document. At specialist rates of AED 250 to AED 400 an hour that is roughly AED 1,500 to AED 3,200. The hours cover questioning the research question, checking the method can produce usable data, teaching the statistics and marking a practice version against the published criteria. The student designs, collects, analyses and writes every part of it.

Is ESS cheaper to tutor than Biology or Chemistry at Diploma level?+

No, and often the opposite. Hourly rates for Diploma sciences sit in a similar band, but supply differs sharply. Biology and Chemistry specialists are plentiful in the UAE market, which keeps rates competitive; ESS cohorts are small, option blocks change year to year, and few teachers have taught the current guide. Scarcity pushes the quote towards the upper end of the band. The offsetting factor is hours: an ESS student often needs fewer total hours than a Chemistry student, because the content load is lighter and more of the grade sits in one piece of coursework.

Why can my son's own ESS teacher at his Abu Dhabi school not tutor him privately?+

Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes teachers being prohibited from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE private tuition work permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it. The practical consequence for a parent is that the person who knows the course best is unavailable privately, which is one of the clearest reasons Abu Dhabi families look beyond their own neighbourhood for a specialist.

What does an in-home ESS tutor in Abu Dhabi charge, and what is the money buying?+

Published in-home rates in this market run from about AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, against roughly AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified subject tutor online. The premium covers travel, fuel and the student the tutor cannot teach while driving. For a subject needing only a laptop, a shared screen and marked work, that premium buys presence rather than teaching. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi; home visits are a service we provide only in India, and every UAE session runs one-to-one over live video.

How many hours of ESS support does an Abu Dhabi Diploma student usually book?+

Across our own caseload the common shapes are a weekly hour through DP1 term two and DP2, which is roughly fifty to sixty hours over two years, or a compressed plan of a six to eight hour investigation block plus fifteen to twenty hours before the May session. Students starting in February of DP2 use more hours per mark gained, because content gaps and coursework pressure arrive together. These are observations from our own students rather than a published standard, and your child's number depends on where the marks are currently going.

Does a tutor working with my child from outside the UAE still need a permit?+

The permit question depends on where the tutor is working from, and it is a fair thing to ask any provider. A tutor resident in the UAE who gives private lessons, including online lessons, needs the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023; it is free and valid for two years. A tutor resident and working abroad is governed by their own jurisdiction's rules. What matters for you is that the provider answers the question clearly and can evidence the position rather than deflecting it.

Which Abu Dhabi schools enter students for ESS at Higher Level?+

Option blocks change year to year, so the only reliable answer comes from the school. Ask your IB coordinator two things: whether Environmental Systems and Societies is running for your child's cohort, and at which level. Under the current subject guide the course is offered at Higher Level as well as Standard Level, which is a change from the previous guide, and schools in the emirate adopted it at different speeds. We do not publish a list of which school teaches what, because such a list is out of date within a year and a parent who relies on it plans around a subject their child cannot take.

Will an ESS grade help with UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Equivalency is a Ministry of Education process and not something a tutoring provider performs or influences. For the British track the published requirement is five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at no less than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. No IB points threshold has been verified for this project, so we publish none. Check the current requirement on moe.gov.ae or with the attestation authority directly before planning subject choices around it.

Can a single tutor cover ESS and Geography on one invoice?+

Often yes, and it can be efficient rather than merely cheaper. The two subjects share case-study discipline, the habit of naming a place and a figure, and overlapping content on resources and population. One tutor keeps the framing consistent and can stop a student importing geography vocabulary into an ESS answer where the examiner expects systems language. The rate is per hour rather than per subject, so two subjects in one hour means less time on each. For a DP2 student with an investigation deadline we usually recommend separate hours.

What happens to the fee if we pause sessions during Ramadan?+

Nothing is charged for a session that does not run. Many Abu Dhabi families move to post-Iftar slots rather than pausing, and we schedule for that in advance instead of cancelling week by week. Others pause entirely and resume afterwards, which is a reasonable choice in DP1 and a harder one in DP2 if a coursework deadline sits in the same window. We plan the term around Ramadan, school examination weeks and family travel at the start, so the slot is held rather than lost.

How do I compare two ESS tutoring quotes from Abu Dhabi agencies fairly?+

Put both on the same four questions. Is the rate per 60 minutes or per lesson, and how long is a lesson? Is marking of set work included, and is feedback written or verbal? What happens in May if the tutor becomes unavailable? And who is actually teaching, with what experience of the current ESS guide? Then ask for the cancellation rule in writing. Most of the apparent price gap in this market closes once both quotes are expressed as cost per marked, documented hour with cover arrangements stated.

Start with the number, then with a trial lesson

If you are weighing an IB DP Environmental Systems and Societies tutor in Abu Dhabi against a quote you already hold, the useful next step is a free trial lesson with the tutor who would actually teach. Your child works on their own material for the hour; afterwards you get a written view of where the marks are going, how many hours a realistic plan needs, and a rate per 60 minutes with inclusions stated. Sessions run one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time around school and training. If no ESS specialist is free in the hour you need, we will tell you rather than offer a generalist at a specialist rate.
