IB MYP French Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB MYP French tutor in Abu Dhabi is priced on one thing above all others: the Language Acquisition phase your child sits in. This page publishes the AED bands the Abu Dhabi market charges, names the five variables that move the number, and shows what an hour actually buys. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, scheduled after the school run across the island, Khalifa City and Al Raha.

  • AED rate bands published with the source and the month
  • Phase 1 to Phase 6 Language Acquisition, criteria A to D

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

What an hour of MYP French costs in Abu Dhabi, and why the quotes differ so much

Ask three providers in Abu Dhabi what MYP French costs and you will get three numbers between AED 50 and AED 650 an hour. Nothing about the subject explains that spread. The spread exists because the word tutor covers a university student revising vocabulary lists, a qualified languages teacher who marks to the MYP criteria, and an agency charging a premium for a named specialist. Parents are quoted a price before anyone has established which of those three the child actually needs, which is why the number feels arbitrary.

The deciding variable is phase. MYP Language Acquisition runs across six phases, and a French learner in Phase 1 and a French learner in Phase 5 are doing different subjects wearing the same name. Phase 1 work is about recognising and producing short, familiar language with heavy support. Phase 5 work asks a student to interpret unfamiliar text, infer meaning, and write at length for a defined audience and purpose. The first can be taught well by a strong generalist. The second needs someone who has marked the criteria and knows where a level 6 answer stops short of a level 7.

Published rates in this market cluster into recognisable bands. EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52, both online and both at the entry end. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes around AED 270. BartyED sits at AED 650 for a premium named tutor. Bestimate's Dubai rate table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 and specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to 450 and above. Those are market figures from the providers themselves, read in October 2026, not an IB Gram price list.

Abu Dhabi adds its own arithmetic. The emirate's private schools are licensed and inspected by ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, and enrolment is spread between the island, the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, and newer mainland communities such as Al Shamkha and Al Falah. A tutor driving from Al Reem Island to Khalifa City in the 4pm window is committing closer to ninety minutes than sixty, and someone pays for that time. Online delivery removes the drive from the invoice, which is the single largest controllable line in an in-home quote.

What follows is the honest version. A rate table with sources. The five variables that move your quote up or down. What marking a written task against criterion C actually involves, so you can judge whether the hour is worth the money. The MYP five-year budget counted backwards from the final year rather than forwards from today. And a plain statement of how IB Gram delivers: one-to-one over live video, scheduled to Gulf Standard Time, with one free trial lesson before anything is paid and no card details taken to book it.

At a glance

  • Market online one-to-one for a qualified subject tutor: AED 150-300 an hour, per published provider rates read October 2026
  • In-home one-to-one in the UAE runs AED 180-500 because travel time is inside the fee
  • Phase 1-2 French and Phase 5-6 French are priced differently because they are different teaching jobs
  • A 45-minute slot is the honest length for a Phase 1 learner; 90 minutes is wasted on them
  • IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in Abu Dhabi - home visits are a service we offer only in India
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

French appears in three IB programmes and each one prices support differently, because each one assesses something different. A parent looking for MYP help is usually one or two years away from the Diploma decision, so the programme map below is worth reading as a budget sequence rather than a brochure.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

French in the PYP is an additional language taught through inquiry units rather than a graded subject with external criteria. There is no phase label and no criterion marking, so support here is about building listening confidence and a working vocabulary. Sessions are short, oral-heavy and cheap by comparison, because the tutor is not marking anything. Families who start French support in Year 5 or 6 generally pay the lowest hourly rate they will ever pay for the subject.

Abu Dhabi has a large French-speaking expatriate community served by French-curriculum schools such as Lycee Louis Massignon alongside the IB and British sector. Children arriving into an Abu Dhabi IB school from a French-medium background often need the opposite of tutoring in French - they need English support - and a good first lesson establishes which of the two is actually the problem.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11 · MYP 1-5

Middle Years Programme

This is the programme in the URL. French sits inside Language Acquisition, assessed against four criteria worth 8 marks each: comprehending spoken and visual text, comprehending written and visual text, communicating in response to text, and using language in spoken and written form. Each criterion is marked on a published descriptor band and converted to a 1-7 subject grade by the school. Pricing rises with phase because criterion D at Phase 5 demands accuracy a generalist tutor cannot reliably assess.

Abu Dhabi MYP schools place students into phases on arrival, and a mid-year transfer from a British or Indian curriculum school often lands in a phase that flatters or punishes them. Families in the Khalifa City and Raha corridor move schools more often than island families do, so phase misplacement is a recurring reason Abu Dhabi parents book French support in the first term rather than the third.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

French in the Diploma is taken as Language B at SL or HL, or as Language ab initio at SL for near-beginners. The phase a student leaves MYP in effectively decides which of those three doors is open, and ab initio is closed to anyone with meaningful prior study. Diploma-level French support costs more per hour than MYP support in every published rate table, which is the practical argument for spending money in MYP 4 and 5 rather than DP1.

Abu Dhabi Diploma cohorts are small, and a school may run French B SL in a class of six or not at all in a given year. When a school cannot timetable the level a student needs, families either change the subject choice or arrange outside support - and the cost of that decision is set two years earlier, by the phase the student reached in MYP.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The Career-related Programme pairs Diploma courses with a career-related study and a language development component. French can sit inside that language development strand, which is assessed through a portfolio rather than an examination. Support is cheaper per hour than Diploma Language B because the evidence requirement is lighter, but it still needs a tutor who understands portfolio evidence rather than one who teaches conversation.

Very few Abu Dhabi schools run the Career-related Programme, so most families reading this page will not need it. It is included because parents comparing quotes are sometimes offered a CP language rate by a provider that has not checked which programme the child is in, and the difference is large enough to notice.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

A French booking rarely stays a French booking. Families in Abu Dhabi commonly add a second subject within a term, and the rate you are quoted for French tells you very little about what the second subject will cost. The grid below sets out the MYP subjects most often paired with French and what each one is actually assessed on.

French - Language Acquisition

MYP Phases 1-6

Four criteria at 8 marks each. Phases 1-2 reward recognition and short production; Phases 4-6 demand inference from unfamiliar text and sustained writing for a stated audience. The commonest hidden problem is a student placed a phase above their real level, scoring 3s on criterion D and losing confidence.

Spanish - Language Acquisition

MYP Phases 1-6

Same four criteria, same phase structure, different interference patterns. Students who take French and Spanish together confuse verb endings before they confuse vocabulary, and a tutor who teaches both can separate the two faster than two tutors working independently.

English - Language and Literature

MYP 1-5

Assessed on analysing, organising, producing text and using language. Marks are lost on criterion A when a student retells a text instead of analysing how it works. A French learner with weak English analysis usually has one writing problem, not two language problems.

Arabic - Language Acquisition or first language

MYP Phases 1-6 and first-language routes

Mandatory alongside the licensed curriculum in UAE private schools, with separate provision for Arab and non-Arab students. Families budgeting for French often forget Arabic is also being graded, and the two together are the most common double booking in Abu Dhabi.

Individuals and Societies

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating, communicating and thinking critically. The written tasks look like history essays but are marked on process evidence as much as content, which catches out students who write well and plan nothing.

Mathematics - Standard and Extended

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, applying maths in real-life contexts. The investigating patterns criterion is where marks go missing, because students find the pattern and never justify the general rule.

Sciences - Biology, Chemistry, Physics

MYP 1-5 integrated or discrete

Four criteria including inquiring and designing, and processing and evaluating. Lab reports lose marks on the evaluation strand far more often than on the practical work itself, which is the opposite of what most students assume.

Design

MYP 1-5

Inquiring and analysing, developing ideas, creating the solution, evaluating. A design cycle folder is the assessment, and students who build a strong product and document it thinly score lower than students who do the reverse.

Arts - visual and performing

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively, responding. The process journal carries the marks, and a French student doing a francophone arts unit can reuse research across both subjects if the referencing is handled properly.

Personal Project

MYP 5

Investigating, planning, taking action, reflecting, evidenced through a process journal and a report. It runs in the same year as the heaviest French assessment for most Abu Dhabi students, which is why MYP 5 is the year families most often need two bookings at once.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats are genuinely available to an Abu Dhabi family, and they are priced differently for reasons worth understanding before you choose. All IB Gram lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video.

Weekly one-to-one over live video

The default for MYP French. One 45- or 60-minute session a week, same tutor, same slot, with the week's school tasks as the working material. The session is scheduled to Gulf Standard Time around the Abu Dhabi school run, and the tutor works from your child's own assignments rather than a generic scheme of work.

  • 45 minutes for Phases 1-2, 60 for Phases 3-6
  • Same tutor each week, so phase judgement improves
  • Written tasks marked against the four criteria
  • Rescheduling handled by message, not by a cancellation fee

Assessment-window block

A short, dense run of sessions ahead of a reporting window or an ePortfolio deadline, then a stop. Families use this when the school calendar rather than the child is driving the need. It costs more per month than weekly support and less in total, because you are buying six weeks instead of a year.

  • Four to eight sessions inside a fixed window
  • Priced per session, not on a subscription
  • Built backwards from the school's own deadline
  • Ends cleanly, with written feedback for the school

Paired siblings or two subjects, one tutor

Where two children in the same household sit in adjacent phases, or where one child needs French and Spanish, a single tutor across both reduces total cost and removes the duplicated diagnosis. It is not a group class - each child still gets focused time inside the session.

  • Two adjacent phases in one household
  • French and Spanish with the same tutor
  • One diagnosis rather than two
  • Lower total cost than two separate bookings

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What MYP French tutoring actually costs in Abu Dhabi

A qualified subject tutor teaching MYP French online in the Abu Dhabi market charges roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour as of October 2026. Below that band you are buying a generalist or a student tutor. Above it you are paying for a named specialist or an agency margin. In-home delivery adds AED 50 to 150 an hour over the online equivalent, and all of that increment is travel.

Those figures come from providers who publish them. EdFlik advertises online tuition from AED 45 to 65 an hour. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to 52. Unitors publishes IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes about AED 270. BartyED sits at AED 650 for its premium tier. Bestimate's Dubai 2026 rate table gives in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 and specialist exam-year support at AED 200 to 450 and above, with monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions of AED 240 to 600 at the budget end and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year work. Every one of those is the provider's own published figure, read in October 2026.

Three of the six most visible competitor pages in this market publish no price at all, and the two that do quote in US dollars, which is not the currency an Abu Dhabi family transacts in. That is why this table exists. It is a market map, not an IB Gram price list - our own figure comes with the consultation, after the trial lesson has established which band the child actually needs.

Read the table by row, not by column. The useful comparison is not online against in-home at the same tier; it is the tier your child needs against the tier you were quoted. A Phase 2 learner put with a premium specialist is a waste of AED 400 an hour. A Phase 5 student put with a budget tutor is a waste of all of it.

The five variables that move your quote

Two Abu Dhabi families can be quoted AED 180 and AED 420 for what sounds like the same hour of MYP French. The difference is almost never negotiation. It is five identifiable variables, and four of them are inside your control.

Phase is the largest. A Phase 1 or 2 learner needs vocabulary building, sentence patterns and oral confidence, which a strong generalist languages teacher delivers well. A Phase 5 or 6 learner needs someone who can read a criterion C descriptor and say precisely why a piece of writing sits at level 5 rather than level 7. That second skill is scarcer and priced accordingly. Paying specialist rates for Phase 2 work buys nothing; paying generalist rates for Phase 5 work buys a pleasant hour and no grade movement.

Session length is the variable families get wrong most often. A 90-minute session sold as better value is worse value for a twelve-year-old in Phase 2, whose useful attention on unfamiliar French runs out well before the end. Timing in the year matters too: demand concentrates in the three weeks before a reporting window, and that is when availability tightens and premium tiers get booked. Format is the last lever - two siblings in adjacent phases sharing a tutor, or French and Spanish with one person, cuts the total without cutting the teaching.

The fifth variable is the one nobody mentions in a quote: travel. An in-home tutor crossing from Al Bateen to Al Shamkha at 4pm is paid for the drive whether the invoice itemises it or not. Removing that line is why online delivery sits lower in every published rate table in this market, and it is the reason an Abu Dhabi family can reach a specialist tier at a generalist price.

The four criteria your money is actually buying time against

  • Criterion A - comprehending spoken and visual text, 8 marks
  • Criterion B - comprehending written and visual text, 8 marks
  • Criterion C - communicating in response to text, 8 marks
  • Criterion D - using language in spoken and written form, 8 marks
  • Ask for the criterion letter and the evidence of movement before you pay for a block

MYP Language Acquisition is marked against four criteria, each out of 8, and the school converts the profile into a 1-7 subject grade using published boundaries. Criterion A covers comprehending spoken and visual text. Criterion B covers comprehending written and visual text. Criterion C covers communicating in response to spoken, written and visual text. Criterion D covers using language in spoken and written form. A parent who knows which of those four is weak can buy ten hours of useful support. A parent who does not buys ten hours of general French.

In practice, Abu Dhabi MYP reports cluster failure in two places. Criterion B marks drop when a student can decode every word in a text and still cannot infer what the writer wants the reader to conclude - a reading-strategy problem dressed as a vocabulary problem. Criterion D marks drop when a student has the ideas and loses them to tense agreement, gender and register, which is an accuracy problem that responds to drilling rather than discussion.

That distinction decides the shape of a session and therefore the cost of a term. A criterion B weakness is fixed with short unfamiliar texts and a repeated inference routine, which works at 45 minutes a week over a term. A criterion D weakness needs frequent, small, corrected production - more like three short pieces a week marked in detail than one long conversation. The second is more tutor hours of marking and less tutor hours of talking, and a provider who prices only talking time will quietly do less of it.

Ask any prospective tutor one question before you pay: which criterion are we working on first, and what will the evidence of movement be? A tutor who answers with a criterion letter and a named task is worth the upper band. A tutor who answers that they will build confidence is worth the lower one.

04

Online versus an in-home French tutor in Abu Dhabi

Parents searching for a French tutor in Abu Dhabi usually start by looking for someone to come to the villa, and that is a reasonable instinct. It is worth pricing honestly. An in-home one-to-one visit in this market runs AED 180 to 500 an hour depending on tier, against AED 150 to 300 for the equivalent online, and monthly in-home packages advertised in the Dubai market reach AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour visits against about AED 799 for eight online sessions.

The gap is travel, and travel is worse in Abu Dhabi than the map suggests. The 4pm to 6pm window is when every school run in the emirate happens at once, and the bridges onto Al Reem, Saadiyat and Yas are the choke points. A tutor who lives on the island and teaches in Al Shamkha can reasonably take an hour each way. Either the family pays for that time, or the tutor declines the booking - which is why in-home coverage thins out sharply in the mainland communities where new family housing has grown fastest.

There is a second cost that does not show on an invoice. In-home tutoring restricts you to whoever is willing to drive to your address at the hour your child is free. For a Phase 2 French learner that pool is adequate. For a Phase 5 student who needs criterion-level marking, the pool in a given neighbourhood may be one person, or nobody. Online removes the geography from the selection and leaves only the match.

IB Gram delivers to Abu Dhabi families as one-to-one tuition over live video. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. That is stated plainly here because the alternative - implying a visit and then explaining the truth after a deposit - is how this market loses parents' trust.

Counting the MYP five-year budget backwards

  • MYP 1-2: support only after an arrival mid-phase from a non-French school
  • MYP 3: cheapest effective window, 45 minutes weekly on reading strategy
  • MYP 4: the year a criterion D gap can still be closed before it sets
  • MYP 5: heaviest and dearest, with the Personal Project competing for the same evenings
  • Work from the school's own assessment calendar, obtained from the MYP coordinator

Most families start French support in the year the report card gets uncomfortable, which is usually MYP 4. The cheaper sequence runs the other way. Phase progression in Language Acquisition is cumulative: a student who finishes MYP 3 solidly inside Phase 3 reaches MYP 5 with a realistic route to a Diploma Language B course. A student who arrives in MYP 5 still working at Phase 2 is choosing between ab initio and dropping the language, and both of those decisions cost more than two years of weekly support would have.

Counted backwards from the end of MYP 5, the honest plan looks like this. MYP 5 is the heaviest year and the worst year to start, because the Personal Project is running at the same time and the student has no spare evenings. MYP 4 is when most of the gap can still be closed, and it is the year where a term of focused criterion D work pays for itself. MYP 3 is where cheap preventive support works - a 45-minute weekly slot at the lower market band, aimed at reading strategy before the texts get unfamiliar. MYP 1 and 2 rarely need paid support at all unless the child has arrived from a non-French school mid-phase.

This sequence also decides whether you ever need the premium tier. Criterion-level marking is the expensive skill, and it is only genuinely necessary from Phase 4 upwards. A family that keeps a student on track through MYP 3 with lower-band support may never need to buy the top band at all, which over five years is the difference between a few thousand dirhams and a great many.

Build the plan around your school's own reporting dates rather than the exam calendar. ADEK schools in Abu Dhabi set their own internal assessment windows, and the dates that actually matter to an MYP student are the ones in the school's calendar, not a national one. Ask the MYP coordinator for the Language Acquisition assessment schedule for the year and work backwards from it.

06

ADEK, the permit, and what a parent can actually check

Private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are licensed and accredited by ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. ADEK is named by effectively none of the competing tutoring pages in this market, which is odd, because it is the body whose inspection reports tell an Abu Dhabi parent what the school is actually delivering. ADEK does not set, cap or approve private tutoring rates, and no tutoring provider is licensed by ADEK unless it operates premises under a separate permit.

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated separately, by permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through MoHRE. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fee, and gives a two-working-day completion time through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount is quoted here. There is a further point specific to this emirate: ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as prohibiting teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it.

What this means for a quote is simple. A permit costs the tutor nothing, so a provider adding a licensing surcharge to your invoice is charging you for a free document. And a tutor who cannot tell you their permit position is a risk you are paying for. IB Gram holds no ADEK, MoHRE, IB or Cambridge accreditation and does not claim any; what we do is deliver one-to-one online teaching and tell you plainly where the regulatory lines sit.

07

Arabic, Islamic Education and the real cost of a UAE timetable

A French budget drawn up in isolation is usually wrong, because French is not the only language being graded. Private schools in the UAE are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, and must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. That federal baseline is why a child in an Abu Dhabi IB school carries Arabic and, where applicable, Islamic Education alongside MYP French.

The operational detail is published most clearly in Dubai's guidance, and the principles are instructive across the country. KHDA's mandatory-subject requirements set out that for Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited due to different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. The instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and it is advised that any mandatory subject lesson runs at least 25 minutes.

For families, the consequence is arithmetic. A student carrying Arabic, French and English in the same week has three languages under assessment, and a tutoring plan that treats French as the only problem will run into a timetable that has no room for it. The practical answer is sequencing rather than volume: one language supported properly at a time, in the term where its assessment actually falls, rather than three thin bookings at once.

There is one constraint worth knowing before anyone offers you Arabic material. For the mandatory UAE subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited. A tutor supporting Arabic works with the school's own set material, not with an imported scheme - and a provider promising their own Arabic curriculum has not read the rule.

08

What an hour looks like, and what the trial establishes

  • One free trial lesson per student, no card details, nothing payable
  • Phase judgement based on a recent marked task, not a conversation
  • A named criterion to work on first, in writing
  • The tier and session length we recommend, against the published market bands
  • A plain statement when no specialist is available for your slot

A first session for MYP French in Abu Dhabi is a diagnosis, not a lesson, and it is free. One trial lesson per student, booked without card details and with nothing payable before or after it. The condition is simply that it is one lesson for one student - there is no obligation to continue and no charge if you do not.

In that lesson the tutor establishes three things. Which phase the child is genuinely working in, which is not always the phase the school has recorded. Which of the four criteria is dragging the grade, established by looking at a recent marked task rather than by asking. And what the realistic weekly commitment is, given a school timetable that already carries Arabic and English under assessment.

After the trial you get a written note with a phase judgement, a named criterion to work on first, and a recommended session length and frequency - with the tier that implies, so you can compare the number against the market bands published higher up this page. If the honest answer is that your child needs forty-five minutes a week at the lower band rather than a specialist block, that is what the note says.

Where no suitable MYP French specialist is free for the slot a family needs, we say so rather than substituting a generalist at a specialist price. In that case the options offered are a different slot with the right tutor, a temporary tutor at the lower band with the limitation stated, or a referral back when availability opens. Disclosing a coverage limit is not a weakness in this market; concealing one behind a premium rate is.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Where you live in Abu Dhabi changes an in-home quote and changes nothing about an online one. That difference is worth a few hundred dirhams a month in the 4pm to 6pm window, so the notes below are written around travel and timetable rather than scenery.

Al Reem Island

Dense towers, a short bridge to the island and a long queue onto it at 4pm. In-home tutors quote Al Reem at the higher end of their band because one session can swallow an afternoon. Online slots here fill earliest at 4.30pm.

Khalifa City

Villa communities feeding Raha International School and the Al Yasmina and Yasmina cluster. Families here are the most frequent movers between schools in the emirate, which makes first-term phase checks more common than elsewhere.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

A compact corridor with a predictable school run, so in-home rates are nearer the middle of the band. A 5pm start is realistic here, where it is optimistic on the island.

Saadiyat Island

Low-density housing and a long single approach road. Travel time is the whole premium in an in-home quote here, and it does not buy any additional teaching.

Al Bateen and Al Mushrif

Established island neighbourhoods close to several long-standing private schools. Tutor supply is better here than anywhere else in the emirate, which pushes in-home rates down and makes evening slots easier to find.

Yas Island

Newer family housing with a growing school cluster. Session timing is dictated by the bridge rather than by distance, and families often prefer a 6.30pm start after traffic has cleared.

Al Shamkha and Al Falah

Mainland communities with longer commutes to island schools. In-home coverage thins out markedly here, and this is where the gap between an advertised rate and an achievable one is widest.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

The island - Al Bateen, Al Mushrif and the Corniche

The oldest concentration of private schools in the emirate and the easiest place to find a tutor who has taught the local MYP cohorts. French is widely offered here, partly because the French-speaking community in Abu Dhabi has historically clustered on the island.

  • Al Bateen Academy
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Lycee Louis Massignon
  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas

The corridor where most new family enrolment in the emirate has landed. Schools here run large MYP cohorts, and phase placement on arrival is handled quickly, which is exactly when a mismatch gets missed.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Yasmina British Academy
  • GEMS World Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi

Schools are named as context for the Abu Dhabi education sector only. No affiliation, endorsement or commercial relationship with any named school is implied.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the phase and send one marked task

A recent piece of marked French work tells a tutor more than a twenty-minute phone call. Send the task, the criterion marks the school gave it, and the phase on the last report. If you do not have the phase to hand, the MYP coordinator can confirm it in a line.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson, used as a diagnosis

One lesson, one student, no card details and nothing payable. The tutor checks the recorded phase against what the student can actually do, looks at the marked task, and identifies which of the four criteria is costing the grade.

  3. 03

A written recommendation with a number against it

You get a phase judgement, the criterion to work on first, a recommended session length and frequency, and the tier that implies. Compare it against the market bands on this page before you agree to anything.

  4. 04

Weekly slot fixed to Gulf Standard Time

Sessions are scheduled around the Abu Dhabi school run, usually between 4.30pm and 8.30pm, with the same tutor each week. Written tasks are submitted between sessions and returned with criterion-referenced comments.

  5. 05

Review against the school's own assessment dates

Progress is checked against the school's reporting windows rather than a generic timeline, and the plan is adjusted or stopped accordingly. A block that has done its job should end, and we will say when it has.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The rate bands are published with their sources

Three of the six most visible pages in this market publish no price at all. This one publishes the market bands, names the providers they came from, and dates them to October 2026 - then separates them clearly from what IB Gram itself quotes after a trial.

Phase judgement before a quote

A price for MYP French means nothing until someone has established the phase. The trial lesson exists to do that, and the written note that follows tells you which tier the child actually needs rather than which tier we would prefer to sell.

Criterion-referenced marking between sessions

Criterion D improves through frequent small corrected production, not weekly conversation. Written tasks are submitted and returned with comments against the specific criterion, which is marking time rather than talking time.

No travel inside the fee

Lessons run one-to-one over live video, so the 4pm crossing onto Al Reem or out to Al Shamkha is not a line in your invoice. That is the whole of the price difference between online and in-home in every published rate table in this market.

Regulatory lines stated, not implied

ADEK licenses schools, MoHRE issues the free private tuition permit, and IB Gram holds no accreditation from either and claims none. A tutor teaches, reviews and gives feedback on a student's own work, and never produces assessed work on their behalf.

Availability disclosed when it runs out

If no MYP French specialist is free for the slot you need, we say so and offer a different slot, a lower-band alternative with the limitation stated, or a referral back. No competitor page in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does an MYP French tutor charge per hour in Abu Dhabi?+

Published market rates in October 2026 put a qualified online subject tutor at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with entry-level online tuition advertised from AED 33 to 65 by Tutopiya and EdFlik, around AED 270 by TutorChase, and AED 650 at BartyED's premium tier. In-home one-to-one in the UAE runs AED 180 to 500 because travel sits inside the fee. Those are the providers' own published figures, not an IB Gram price list. Our own quote follows the free trial lesson, once a tutor has established which phase your child is working in and therefore which tier is actually needed.

Why is Phase 5 French priced above Phase 1 in Abu Dhabi?+

Because they are different teaching jobs. Phase 1 and 2 work is vocabulary, sentence patterns and oral confidence, which a strong generalist languages teacher delivers well at the lower market band. Phase 5 and 6 work asks a tutor to read a criterion descriptor and explain exactly why a piece of writing sits at level 5 rather than level 7, and to mark unfamiliar text comprehension accurately. That judgement is a scarcer skill, so it costs more. Paying specialist rates for Phase 2 content buys nothing useful, and paying generalist rates for Phase 5 content buys a pleasant hour with no grade movement.

Is a French tutor cheaper for us in Khalifa City than on Abu Dhabi island?+

For in-home tutoring, yes and no - the island has the deepest tutor supply in the emirate, which pushes rates down there, while mainland communities like Al Shamkha and Al Falah see both higher quotes and thinner coverage because of the drive. Al Raha and Khalifa City sit in the middle, with a more predictable school run. For online tutoring your postcode changes nothing at all: the rate, the tutor pool and the available slots are identical across the emirate, which is the main reason families in the outer communities end up online.

How many hours of MYP French support does an Abu Dhabi family usually buy in a term?+

The common pattern is one 45- or 60-minute session a week across a school term, so roughly ten to twelve hours, with written tasks marked in between. Phase 1 and 2 learners do better on 45 minutes; from Phase 4 upwards a 60-minute session earns its length. Families working to a specific reporting window instead buy a block of four to eight sessions and then stop. Buying a large bundle up front is rarely good value before anyone has established the phase, because the phase decides both the tier and the session length you actually need.

Does the MYP eAssessment option change what French support costs?+

It changes the shape of the work rather than the hourly rate. Where a school registers Language Acquisition for MYP eAssessment, the evidence is portfolio-based rather than a sat paper, so support shifts towards building and refining pieces of the student's own work over months instead of exam technique in a final block. That spreads cost across the year rather than concentrating it. Not every Abu Dhabi school takes the eAssessment route, and the components a school enters vary, so confirm with your MYP coordinator which route your child is on before you plan a budget around it.

Do we pay more for a native French speaker?+

Native fluency on its own does not command a premium in this market, and it is not the variable that moves an MYP grade. What is priced is criterion judgement - whether the tutor has marked MYP Language Acquisition tasks and can say why a piece of writing scored what it scored. A native speaker without that experience sits in the lower band; a non-native teacher with it sits in the upper band. For Phase 1 and 2 oral confidence, native fluency genuinely helps. For criterion B inference and criterion D accuracy at Phase 5, marking experience helps far more.

Is marking written French between sessions included in the hourly rate?+

With IB Gram it is part of the weekly arrangement rather than a separate line - written tasks are submitted between sessions and returned with comments against the specific criterion. Elsewhere in this market it varies, and it is worth asking directly, because marking is where criterion D accuracy actually improves. A provider charging only for contact time has a financial reason to do less marking. When comparing quotes, ask how many pieces of written work will be marked per month and what the feedback looks like, then compare the real cost per marked task.

Can one tutor cover French and Arabic to reduce what we spend?+

One tutor covering two languages is possible where the phases are adjacent and the tutor genuinely teaches both, and it does cut total cost by removing a duplicated diagnosis. It is more common to pair French with Spanish, because the interference patterns overlap and one person can separate them faster than two. Arabic is a different case: it is a mandatory subject with set school material, and the Ministry prohibits using different or additional content without prior permission, so an Arabic tutor works from the school's own scheme rather than their own.

Do tutoring rates in Abu Dhabi rise before an MYP reporting window?+

Advertised rates do not usually change, but what you can actually book does. Demand concentrates in the two or three weeks before a school's reporting or portfolio deadline, and the first thing to disappear is availability in the 4.30pm to 6pm slots at the specialist tier. Families who leave it until that point often end up paying an upper-band rate for a tutor who was their third choice. Booking from the start of a term, or at least a month before a known deadline, is the cheapest scheduling decision available in this market.

Does ADEK set or cap what a private French tutor may charge?+

No. ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate of Abu Dhabi and publishes school inspection outcomes. It does not regulate private tutoring rates, and no tutoring provider is licensed by ADEK unless it operates premises under a separate permit. Private tutoring is regulated through a different route: the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. IB Gram holds no ADEK accreditation and claims none - we name the regulator because its school reports are useful to parents.

Does our tutor need a MoHRE permit, and does that cost us anything?+

A permit is required and it costs nothing. The UAE private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Anyone offering private tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. A provider adding a licensing charge to your invoice is billing you for a free document.

Can we buy French support in MYP 5 only and skip the earlier years?+

You can, and it is the most expensive version of the plan. Phase progression in Language Acquisition is cumulative, so a student who reaches MYP 5 still working at Phase 2 is choosing between Diploma ab initio and dropping French, and both decisions carry a cost. MYP 5 is also the year the Personal Project runs, so the student has fewer free evenings exactly when the French workload peaks. A term of lower-band support in MYP 3, aimed at reading strategy before the texts turn unfamiliar, is the cheapest intervention available in the whole five years.

How do we keep MYP French costs down across the five MYP years?+

Four decisions do most of the work. Start early and low: 45 minutes a week at the lower band in MYP 3 beats a specialist block in MYP 5. Match the tier to the phase rather than to anxiety. Sequence languages instead of stacking them, supporting one properly in the term its assessment falls. And keep delivery online, because travel is the largest controllable line in any UAE quote - AED 50 to 150 an hour that buys no teaching. Stopping a block when it has done its job is the fifth, and the one families forget.

Does Ramadan change the price or only the timing of French lessons in Abu Dhabi?+

The rate does not change; the schedule does. School days shorten during Ramadan and family routines move later, so sessions commonly shift to a post-Iftar slot and the usual 4.30pm to 6pm block empties out. Because online delivery is not constrained by a tutor's driving schedule, moving a weekly slot later is straightforward, which is not always true of an in-home arrangement. Plan around it rather than pausing: the weeks after Ramadan often sit close to a school reporting window, and that is the worst possible time to be restarting from a standstill.

What happens if no MYP French specialist is free for the slot we need?+

We tell you, which is not the market norm. The options are a different slot with the right tutor, a tutor at the lower band with the limitation stated plainly so you are not paying a specialist rate for generalist teaching, or a referral back when availability opens. No competitor page reviewed in this market discloses a coverage limit at all, and several conceal non-UAE delivery behind a local-looking contact number. A disclosed gap is cheaper for a family than a concealed one, because it does not waste a term.

Get a phase judgement before you get a price

Any number quoted for MYP French before someone has established your child's Language Acquisition phase is a guess. Start with the free trial lesson - one lesson, one student, no card details and nothing payable - and you will have a phase judgement, a named criterion to work on first, and a recommended session length with the tier it implies. Compare that against the market bands published on this page and decide from there. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, scheduled around the Abu Dhabi school run, with written tasks marked between sessions.
