Icse to IGCSE Transition in Abu Dhabi

The ICSE to IGCSE transition in Abu Dhabi is usually described in feelings and should be judged on marked papers. This page sets out what to record from the first term, which ICSE strengths transfer intact and are worth nothing to pay for, which habits cost marks in the first few scripts, and what a readable four-week record of movement looks like. Delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • A dated record per script: paper, component, mark, error category
  • ICSE strengths named so you do not pay to rebuild them
  • Tier placement argued from ICSE marks, not from caution
  • We say when the record shows the sessions should stop

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Judge the transition on scripts, not on how the term feels

A student moving from ICSE into IGCSE in Abu Dhabi will have a wobbly first half-term. That is normal, it is not evidence of anything, and the mistake families make is reacting to it. The reverse mistake is equally common: assuming the wobble is normal when the scripts are actually showing a structural problem with tier placement or specification mismatch. Both mistakes are avoided by the same thing, which is a written record of marked work with enough detail to read a trend.

The record is five columns and takes two minutes to keep. Date, paper and component, raw mark against the available mark, and an error category. The error category is the column almost nobody keeps and the one that does the work: knowledge gap, where content was never covered; method error, where the approach was wrong or the working was not shown; command-word misread, where the student answered a different question; arithmetic or transcription slip; and timing, where questions were not reached. Four weeks of that column tells you more than a term of reports.

For an ICSE student specifically, the first scripts tend to show method error and command-word misread rather than knowledge gap, and that pattern is good news. ICSE is a broad, content-rich board with a strong English tradition and substantial internal project work, so the transferring student usually arrives with the content, the writing fluency and the working habits. What they do not arrive with is the habit of writing to IGCSE mark schemes, which allocate method marks and follow command words closely.

That distinction is worth money. A knowledge gap needs teaching, which is hours. A method error and a command-word misread need marked practice, which is fewer hours and faster results, because the student already agrees with the principle and the fault lives in the hand rather than the head. A provider who cannot tell you which of the two your child's scripts show is quoting hours against a diagnosis nobody made.

There is one structural thing the record cannot fix and it has to be checked before any of this matters. Confirm, in writing, the tier each subject is entered at, the board and specification code, the series the entry is for, and which route each science uses for the experimental-skills component. A student practising Extended-tier papers while entered at Core is producing a record of a paper they will never sit, and four weeks of beautifully kept data about the wrong exam is worse than no data.

IB Gram delivers this support as one-to-one online tuition on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run in India only. For an evidence-led approach the online format helps directly: scripts are annotated on a shared screen, stored and timestamped, so week two sits beside week nine without anybody keeping a folder, and a specialist in the exact specification is findable rather than limited to whoever lives nearby.

At a glance

  • Keep five columns per script: date, paper, component, mark, error category
  • ICSE students usually show method error, not knowledge gap, in the first scripts
  • Method error and command-word misread respond to marked practice, not teaching hours
  • A real movement repeats across two attempts at the same paper format
  • Confirm tier, board, specification code and series in writing before collecting any data
  • Four flat weeks with one dominant error means change the sessions, not add to them

Two systems with different assessment traditions, and a transfer point between them. Here is what each side is and where the evidence comes from.

ICSEUp to Class 10

ICSE, the starting point

An Indian board examination at Class 10 with a notably broad subject spread, a strong emphasis on English language and literature, and substantial internal assessment and project work contributing to several subjects. Assessment rewards thorough, well-written, accurately detailed work, and the English demand is higher at the same age than in most comparable systems.

Indian-curriculum provision is a major part of UAE private education, 26 per cent of Dubai private-school students in 2024-25 across a sector of 227 schools teaching 17 curricula, and Abu Dhabi has a comparable concentration. An ICSE student transferring here is usually joining a British-curriculum school that has handled the move before, which is worth using when asking what evidence they will collect.

Cambridge IGCSE

Individually certificated subjects assessed by externally marked papers, with many subjects tiered into Core and Extended. Mathematics is 0580, Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620. Cambridge runs a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Mark schemes allocate method marks and follow defined command words closely.

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, states it is essential to use the correct timetable version for the zone, and says it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Confirm the zone with the exams officer; for a family new to the system this is the cheapest risk in the whole transition to remove.

EDEXCELAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

The other board widely used in the emirate, with its own specification codes such as 4MA1 for International GCSE Mathematics A and its own paper structures. Exams are available in May and June and again in November each year, and some specifications are arranged differently from the Cambridge equivalent of the same named subject.

Pearson publishes dated calendars, which makes planning checkable: the November 2026 International GCSE final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students the next day, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Provisional timetables appear ahead of each series, so work only from the live official PDF.

TIERAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Core and Extended tier placement

The decision that determines whether any record you keep is meaningful. Core covers less content and caps the attainable grade; Extended covers more and opens the top grades, and in Mathematics and several sciences the papers differ entirely between tiers. A record built on the wrong tier's papers describes an exam the student will not sit.

An ICSE student is frequently placed cautiously on arrival because the school has no internal data yet, and caution can cap a grade unnecessarily. Ask for the tier in writing, ask when it becomes final, and ask what evidence would cause a review, because the first marked internal assessment is precisely the evidence that should trigger one.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

This is where an ICSE-trained student typically stands in each IGCSE subject and what the first marked scripts usually show. Several entries recommend recording the evidence and spending nothing.

English as a First Language

Cambridge and Pearson specifications

Normally the strongest transfer in the combination, because ICSE's English demand at the same age is high. The first scripts tend to show strong writing fluency losing marks to paper conventions: summary where analysis was asked, or a response that ignores the question's specific focus. A short block fixes it.

English Literature

Cambridge and Pearson specifications

ICSE literature study builds textual knowledge well. What the record shows is quotation precision and the number of distinct points made under time, both countable, and both improvable within four weeks of marked practice.

Mathematics

Cambridge 0580 Core and Extended; Pearson 4MA1

Content is usually secure. The dominant error category in the first scripts is method error, because IGCSE awards marks for visible working and ICSE answers were scored on correctness and presentation. Two or three marked sessions typically clears it.

Physics

Cambridge 0625 Core and Extended

Coverage transfers reasonably. The record generally shows marks lost in extended responses where reasoning steps are missing, and in the experimental-skills component, which is assessed either by a practical examination or by an alternative written paper depending on the route the school uses.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 Core and Extended

Calculation and nomenclature are usually sound. The error log fills with explanation questions answered by description, and with multi-step calculations where an early slip propagates further than it did before.

Biology

Core and Extended

Content volume is familiar territory for an ICSE student. Command-word precision is the recurring entry in the record: describe, explain, state, suggest and compare each pay differently and the trained default is thorough description.

History

Core and Extended

ICSE builds detailed factual knowledge; IGCSE rewards argument and sourcework. The countable evidence is how much usable argument appears in a timed answer rather than how much accurate detail, which is a different measurement than the student is used to.

Geography

Core and Extended

Skills questions on maps, graphs and data are pattern-based and the fastest marks available to a transferring student. Case-study precision, with named places and figures, takes longer and shows in the record as a slow climb rather than a jump.

Economics

Core and Extended

Often new at this stage. Diagram conventions are the cheapest marks in the paper and the most commonly lost, through unlabelled axes or a missing new equilibrium, which makes them an easy early win in the record.

Business Studies

Core and Extended

The demand is applying a concept to the case rather than defining it accurately. The first scripts typically show knowledge-band marks with analysis marks unawarded, which reads as method error rather than a gap.

Computer Science

Cambridge 0478 and equivalents

Programming background often transfers strongly, and the specific loss is pseudocode convention, which is marked as convention. The record shows it immediately because the logic is right and the notation is not.

Hindi

First Language and Foreign Language routes where offered

Frequently a reliable grade and frequently overlooked at transfer. Availability differs between Abu Dhabi schools, so ask which language options have actually run for two consecutive years rather than which appear in a prospectus.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Each shape below produces a different quantity of evidence per week, which is the thing to choose on. All of them are finite.

Three-script diagnostic

Three sessions and three marked papers across different components, with a written error analysis and no obligation beyond that. The honest first purchase for a transferring family, because it establishes whether the first-term wobble is adjustment or structure.

  • Three dated scripts across different components
  • A written error analysis naming the dominant category
  • No commitment to continue
  • Often shows less support is needed than assumed

Weekly session plus one marked script

One session a week with one timed piece completed between sessions, marked and returned before the next. The same paper format repeated deliberately, so attempts are comparable and a four-week trend becomes readable.

  • One dated data point per week with an error category
  • Format held constant for three or four attempts
  • Error log reviewed openly every fourth session
  • Components recorded separately, never averaged

Method and command-word block

Four to six sessions aimed squarely at the two error categories an ICSE transfer usually shows: method error and command-word misread. Marked practice rather than explanation, because the student already agrees with the principle.

  • Uses the student's own specification papers
  • Covers shown working, command words and graph conventions
  • Transfers across mathematics and all the sciences
  • Reassessed on the same format at the end

Experimental-skills block

Three to four sessions per science on the assessed experimental component, whichever route the school uses. Design, variable control, tables and graphs, uncertainty and the evaluative reasoning the mark scheme rewards, all in writing.

  • Targets the practical or alternative written component
  • Written work, because that is how it is assessed
  • Physical laboratory work stays with the school
  • One short block per science, not an ongoing arrangement

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The record a transferring family should keep

A first term after a board change produces more opinion than information, which is why a written record is worth more here than in almost any other tutoring situation. Five columns: date, paper and component, raw mark against the available mark, and a dominant error category. Keep it from the first marked script, keep the components separate, and never average them into a percentage, because the average is exactly what hides the information you need.

The error category does the diagnostic work. Knowledge gap means content was never covered and needs teaching, which is hours. Method error means the approach was wrong or the working was not shown, which needs marked practice. Command-word misread means the student answered a different question, which needs a short targeted block. Arithmetic slip needs a checking routine. Timing means questions were not reached, which needs full timed papers. Five categories, five different responses, five different costs.

Read the record for a change in the dominant category rather than a rise in the mark. For a transferring student the healthy sequence runs from command-word misread and method error towards slips and timing, which is progress even if the total moves modestly, because the later faults are cheaper to fix than the earlier ones. The unhealthy pattern is the same dominant category at weeks one, three, five and seven, which means the sessions are not addressing the fault and adding more of them only makes the fault more expensive.

The table below shows the format with an illustrative sequence. It is an example of what a record should look like, not a published result: we do not publish student outcome statistics on these pages, because any figure without the number of students, the date and the method behind it is a marketing claim rather than evidence, and this market has a great deal of exactly that.

What transfers intact from ICSE, and should cost nothing

  • Written fluency from a high ICSE English demand usually transfers intact
  • Experience of producing coursework to a deadline is a real asset
  • First English scripts lose marks to paper conventions, not to language
  • Breadth can mean depth gaps in the harder topics, which is narrow and cheap to fix
  • Do not pay for what the record shows is already there

This market has no incentive to tell a transferring family what their child is already good at, so it is worth stating. ICSE is a broad board with a high English demand at Class 10, substantial internal project work in several subjects, and a tradition of thorough, well-presented written answers. An ICSE student arriving in IGCSE usually brings three things that classmates do not: written fluency, breadth of content, and experience of producing extended coursework to a deadline.

English is the clearest case. Where a CBSE transfer frequently needs real English support, an ICSE transfer frequently does not, because the writing demand the student has been meeting is already substantial. What the first scripts show is strong writing losing marks to paper conventions: summary where analysis was asked, or a well-written response that does not address the question's specific focus. That is four to six sessions of marked practice, not a term of language work.

The project experience matters too and gets overlooked. A student used to producing internal assessment work to a brief has the habit of planning, drafting and submitting, which is precisely what some British-curriculum classmates lack. Where a science specification uses a practical route or a subject carries coursework, that habit is an asset and should not be treated as something to be built from scratch.

Breadth has one practical consequence worth planning around. ICSE students often arrive having studied more subjects than their IGCSE cohort will sit, which sounds like an advantage and occasionally produces a mismatch instead: content covered in less depth across more ground. Where that shows in the record it appears as a knowledge gap in the later, harder topics of a subject rather than across the subject, which is a narrow and cheap thing to fix once identified.

03

Tier placement, and the evidence that should trigger a review

A transferring student is often placed cautiously because the school has no internal data on them yet. That is a reasonable default and it should not be a permanent one. Tier placement determines the content taught, the papers sat and the attainable grade ceiling, and in Mathematics and several sciences the papers differ entirely between Core and Extended, so a cautious placement is not a safe version of a good placement; it is a different qualification with a lower ceiling.

The evidence to bring on arrival is ICSE subject marks with whatever internal detail the school holds, read for performance on multi-step and extended work rather than for the overall figure. An ICSE student with solid mathematics marks is often a straightforward Extended candidate. An ICSE student whose strength was presentation and thoroughness rather than multi-step problem solving may genuinely be better placed at Core initially, with a review once internal evidence exists.

Then ask three questions in writing and keep the answers: which tier is my child entered at in each subject, when does the entry become final, and what evidence would cause you to review it. The third is the one nobody asks. Abu Dhabi schools differ, and some will review a tier decision on the strength of internal results during Year 11, which means a cautiously placed student can move up if the evidence appears. The record described above is exactly the evidence, which is one more reason to keep it from week one.

Two cautions. Extended is not automatically better: a student placed above their evidence sits papers designed for stronger candidates and can finish with a lower grade than Core would have produced. And whatever the tier, every past paper, worksheet and marked script must match it. Four weeks of carefully recorded data on the wrong tier's paper is worse than no data, because it produces confident conclusions about an exam the student will not sit.

04

Method marks and command words: the two faults that dominate the first term

  • Method error, usually working not shown, is the commonest first-term fault
  • Command-word misread is the second, and both are behavioural
  • Marked practice shifts them in three scripts; explanation does not
  • Three sessions on command words usually covers a whole subject combination
  • Graph and table conventions are the cheapest recovery available

Across transferring students from Indian boards, two error categories account for most of the lost marks in the first half-term, and neither is a knowledge problem. The first is method error, specifically working not shown. IGCSE mark schemes allocate method marks, so a correct final answer written without the intervening steps forfeits marks that were sitting there for free. The second is command-word misread, where a thorough and accurate description is given to a question that asked the student to explain, suggest or compare.

Both are behavioural, and that is good news because behaviour shifts faster than knowledge. The mechanism is seeing the mark scheme applied to their own script. A student who watches two method marks awarded to the lines of working they almost omitted stops omitting them, usually within three scripts. Explaining the principle in the abstract changes very little, because the student already accepts the principle and the habit is in the hand.

Command words are worth a dedicated session or two because the list is short and the payoff appears immediately in the record. State, describe, explain, suggest, compare, calculate and show each carry defined expectations and different mark structures. List the ones that actually appear in the student's specifications, write what each pays for, and practise them separately with marked feedback until the shape of each answer is automatic. Three sessions usually covers a whole subject combination, because the terms repeat across subjects far more than students expect.

The third fault worth naming is graph and table convention. Axes, scales, units and labelling carry marks in the sciences and in geography, and a transferring student frequently produces a correct graph that scores below its quality because a convention was missed. It is the cheapest recovery in the whole transition and it appears in the record as a step change rather than a climb, usually within two scripts of being named.

05

English after ICSE: a different conversation entirely

  • ICSE English fluency usually transfers; the gap is paper convention
  • Reading papers want analysis of how a text works, not summary
  • Writing papers follow the task specification rather than general quality
  • Confirm First Language or Second Language placement with the school anyway
  • In Literature, count quotations and developed points; both are measurable

Families transferring from ICSE often arrive expecting the English conversation that transferring families from other Indian boards need, and usually they do not need it. ICSE's English demand at Class 10 is substantial, and the students who have met it tend to write fluently, at length, and with control. What the first IGCSE English scripts show is almost never a language problem.

What they do show is paper convention. IGCSE reading papers reward precise selection and analysis of how a text works rather than summary of what it says, and a student who writes an excellent summary has produced a strong answer to a question that was not asked. Writing papers reward register control, structure and audience awareness against a specified task, and the marks follow the task specification rather than the general quality of the prose. Both are learnable in four to six marked sessions.

Placement should still be confirmed rather than assumed. English as a First Language and English as a Second Language are different qualifications with different demands, and for most ICSE transfers First Language is the right one, but the decision belongs to the school's English department and should be informed by a real piece of the student's extended written work rather than by a conversation. One session reading that piece gives the school something to work from.

One further point specific to this transfer. ICSE literature study builds genuine textual knowledge, and the recoverable marks in IGCSE Literature are in quotation precision and in the number of distinct points made within the time available. Both are countable, which makes them ideal for the record: a student making four developed points in forty minutes in week one and six in week five has improved measurably, and that is a better conversation with a teenager than a general comment about depth.

06

The science experimental component, and what the record should show

  • Confirm whether each science uses a practical exam or an alternative written paper
  • The assessed skill is justifying a method, not following one
  • Track three things per script: variables, conventions, a real limitation named
  • Three to four written sessions per science usually closes the gap
  • A tutor reviews the student's own work and never designs or writes it

Experimental skills are assessed either through a practical examination or through an alternative written paper, depending on the route the school enters candidates for, and the first thing to establish is which applies to each science. Both assess design and evaluation rather than execution: apparatus choice, variable control, tables and graphs, uncertainty, and the reasoning the mark scheme wants to see. A transferring student who has done plenty of laboratory work may still have done none of that.

ICSE project and practical experience helps with the habits and not necessarily with the assessed skills, because the assessed skills are about justifying a method rather than following one. So the record for this component should track something specific: in each marked script, whether the variables were correctly identified and controlled, whether the table and graph met convention, and whether the evaluation named a real limitation rather than a general one. Three dimensions, tracked across three or four scripts, is enough to see movement.

This is also the component most often left out of a transfer plan entirely, because it is not obviously a subject and it has no textbook chapter. That omission is expensive: it is a defined part of the grade in every science and it rewards a trainable skill. Three to four written sessions per science usually covers the gap, and the gain shows quickly in the record because the marks are formulaic once the conventions are in place.

A boundary worth stating. A tutor teaches the criteria and the conventions, reviews work the student has produced and marks practice questions. A tutor does not design the student's investigation, write any part of a submitted report, supply text or complete a draft. Where a specification carries assessed coursework, a breach is a malpractice matter for the student. We also do not reproduce or distribute Cambridge or Pearson papers, mark schemes or syllabus documents; we cite and link them, which keeps the student on the current version.

07

The series, the deadlines and the zone check

UAE IGCSE candidates sit the June series and the November series. Cambridge runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in June and November, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May and June and again in November. The Cambridge February and March series is offered to India only, which is directly relevant to a family arriving from an Indian board, because material and advice written for that audience about a spring sitting does not apply to a candidate entered here.

The Cambridge zone requirement is the cheapest risk in this transition to remove and the most expensive to ignore. Every centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones with its own timetable version, Cambridge states it is essential to use the correct version for your zone, and it says plainly that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Ask the exams officer which zone the centre sits in, work only from that version, discard the rest.

Pearson's dated publications show why entries close so far ahead of the papers. The November 2026 International GCSE final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, with results reaching students in January; November 2025 results landed with students on 22 January 2026, and June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026. Pearson issues provisional timetables ahead of each series, so work from the live official PDF rather than any restatement, this page included.

For a mid-year transfer, the series choice can be the whole decision and the record is what should drive it. A student who joined in January and is entered for the June series has not been taught the course, and four weeks of marked evidence will make that obvious quickly. The honest options are a November entry, a reduced subject list, or both, and that conversation belongs with the school in the first fortnight, because entries close months before the papers.

Arabic, Islamic Education and the hours the record does not see

A record of marked scripts measures subject progress and says nothing about the hours available to produce it, and in UAE schools those hours include provision that is not optional. The federal position is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, while adhering to the Ministry's general regulations. In Dubai, KHDA's published mandatory-subject requirements were to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, with April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April. ADEK applies the equivalent requirement in Abu Dhabi.

KHDA calculates mandatory-subject instructional time on a forty-minute lesson unit, permits schools to vary lesson length provided the weekly total is met, and advises that no mandatory-subject lesson runs shorter than twenty-five minutes. For a transferring student taking nine or ten IGCSE subjects alongside that provision, the week is genuinely full, and a plan promising two marked scripts a week has to be measured against it rather than against enthusiasm.

The organisational rules are specific where Arabic is involved. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, stating that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, with the school's licensed-curriculum language used for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and moral, social and cultural studies. Schools must ensure teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects.

One constraint on buying support in these subjects: for the mandatory UAE subjects, the use of any different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited, so support works from the school's own materials and the official programme rather than from an alternative course a tutor prefers. IB Gram holds no KHDA, ADEK, MoE, Cambridge or Pearson approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership, and claims none.

09

Permits, rates and when the record says stop

For a family new to the UAE tutoring market, two practical facts. Individuals providing private tuition need the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and, according to u.ae, granted free of charge for two years; eligible categories include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Tutoring without one exposes the individual to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no fine schedule is published, no amount should be quoted to you.

On rates, published UAE market figures as read in October 2026 put budget online tutoring at roughly AED 33-65 an hour, with Tutopiya from AED 33-52 and EdFlik from AED 45-65; qualified subject tutors online at roughly AED 150-300, with Unitors quoting IGCSE from AED 150; and specialists at roughly AED 200-450 and above. In-home one-to-one runs roughly AED 180-500 including travel. Those are other providers' published figures rather than an IB Gram price list, and the question that separates the bands is who marks the timed work: at the budget end it is usually the student, against a downloaded scheme, which gives a score and no error diagnosis.

Which brings the record back to the centre of the argument. The reason to insist on marked, dated, component-separated scripts is that it is the only way to know whether the money is working. If the dominant error category has been identical across four marked attempts at the same format, the sessions are not addressing the fault, and adding a second weekly session doubles the cost of not addressing it. Ask what specifically will be different next week, phrased as a question about the error category.

We will raise that ourselves rather than wait, including when the answer is a different tutor or stopping altogether. A transferring student's first-term wobble is usually adjustment, and most of these plans should be four to ten sessions rather than a standing arrangement. Private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are licensed and inspected by ADEK, which regulates schools and approves no individual tutor; ADEK's reported professional-ethics rules and the MoHRE code of conduct both point away from paying your child's own teacher. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE, and home tutoring is a service we provide only in India.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Indian-curriculum and British-curriculum schools sit in different parts of the emirate, which changes how many marked papers a week a family can realistically produce. These are the catchments.

Mussafah and Shabiya

Dense Indian-curriculum provision and long journeys to British-curriculum schools, so timed papers get sat at weekends rather than on weekday evenings. That is fine, provided they are genuinely timed.

Al Reef and Al Shamkha

Strong Indian resident population in mainland communities with the longest commutes in the emirate. One marked script a week is realistic here; two is not, and a plan should say so rather than pretend otherwise.

Khalifa City

Both Indian-curriculum and British-curriculum options within reach, so some transfers involve no commute change at all, which makes weekday evening timed work genuinely possible.

Abu Dhabi Island

The oldest British-curriculum provision alongside established Indian-curriculum schools, with short school runs, so a weekday timed paper and a separate session both fit in the same week.

Al Raha and Al Raha Beach

Students are typically home by 15:45, the earliest in the emirate, which is why transferring families here can collect evidence twice a week without the student losing sleep over it.

Yas Island

Newer British-curriculum provision where some subjects have shorter track records and the board has occasionally changed between cohorts, so confirm the specification code rather than assuming last year's applies.

Al Mushrif and Al Bateen

Established central districts with a long-settled professional Indian population, where students often take nine or ten subjects, so the evidence has to be prioritised across subjects rather than collected for all of them.

Al Ain

Limited British-curriculum options under the same regulator and few resident specialists in a specific IGCSE specification, so online marking is often the only route to a script read by someone who knows the paper.

School ecosystem

Abu Dhabi Island and Saadiyat

Long-established British-curriculum provision where internal mocks are generally real past papers marked to the scheme, which makes school evidence usable alongside tutor evidence. Named only as context for the local education landscape.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Confirm the structural facts

Tier per subject, board and specification code per subject, the series, the science experimental route and the Cambridge zone, all in writing from the school. Without these, any record you keep may describe papers your child will never sit.

  2. 02

Send ICSE marks and one piece of writing

Subject marks with whatever internal detail the school holds, read for multi-step and extended performance, plus a real piece of extended written work. The first informs the tier argument; the second settles the English placement question quickly.

  3. 03

    Three-script diagnostic

Three sessions, three marked papers across different components, and a written error analysis naming the dominant category. No obligation to continue. For most transferring ICSE students this shows the wobble is adjustment rather than structure.

  4. 04

    Free trial lesson

One session with the proposed tutor on the first named fault, using the student's own specification, with marked work rather than discussion. If the match is wrong we offer a different tutor instead of asking you to persist with it.

  5. 05

    Weekly script, format held constant

One session and one timed piece a week, the same paper format repeated three or four times so attempts are comparable, components recorded separately, and the error log reviewed openly every fourth session.

  6. 06

Act on the trend, including stopping

A changing dominant error category means it is working. The same category four times means the sessions need changing or a different tutor. Near-ceiling Core scripts before the entry deadline means a tier review conversation, with the dated scripts as the argument.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

A record you can read without us

Dated scripts, components separated, an error category on every piece. No researched competitor page publishes anything resembling a progress record, which is how a term after a board change can pass with nobody able to say whether it worked.

Adjustment separated from structure

A transferring student's first half-term is bumpy for ordinary reasons. The record is what distinguishes that from a tier mismatch or a specification error, and the two need opposite responses at opposite costs.

ICSE strengths left alone

Written fluency, breadth and coursework habits usually transfer intact, and English in particular rarely needs the work a transferring family expects. We say so in writing rather than quoting hours against strengths the record already shows.

The tier review nobody asks for

Cautious placement on arrival is reasonable and should not be permanent. Four weeks of near-ceiling Core scripts is an argument, and some Abu Dhabi schools will review on internal evidence if a family brings it before the entry closes.

Codes and zones checked first

0580, 0620, 0625 and 4MA1 are different papers. UAE candidates sit June and November, not the India-only February and March series. Cambridge will not take responsibility for a candidate who used the wrong zone timetable.

No figures we cannot evidence

No guaranteed grade, no self-assigned rating, no outcome statistic without its sample size, date and method, and no reproduction of Cambridge, Pearson or ICSE materials. Official sources are cited and linked instead.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How do we tell whether a bumpy first IGCSE term is normal after ICSE?+

By keeping a record rather than reading the atmosphere. Five columns per marked script: date, paper and component, raw mark against the available mark, and a dominant error category. For a transferring student, scripts showing method error and command-word misread are ordinary adjustment and respond quickly to marked practice. Scripts showing a knowledge gap across a whole subject, or inexplicable results, point at something structural such as a tier mismatch or practice on the wrong specification. Those need opposite responses at very different costs, and only the record distinguishes them.

Which ICSE strengths carry into IGCSE without any extra help?+

Written fluency, because the ICSE English demand at Class 10 is substantial. Breadth of content, which usually covers the IGCSE syllabus comfortably at the standard end. And the habit of producing coursework to a deadline, which matters where a specification carries assessed practical or project work. None of those should appear as a line item in a quote. A provider recommending a year-long programme including English language work to an ICSE transfer has not looked at a piece of the student's actual writing.

What error categories should a tutor record on my child's scripts?+

Five cover almost everything. Knowledge gap, where content was never covered and teaching is needed. Method error, where the approach was wrong or working was not shown. Command-word misread, where a different question was answered. Arithmetic or transcription slip. And timing, where questions were not reached. Each implies a different intervention and a different number of hours, and only the first is fixed by teaching more content. The useful signal over four weeks is which category dominates and whether it changes, not the raw mark.

Why does my child's correct answer still lose marks in IGCSE maths?+

Because IGCSE mark schemes allocate method marks, and a correct final answer written without the intervening steps forfeits them. For a student trained in a system that scored correctness and presentation, that is an unfamiliar rule rather than a weakness, and it is the commonest single entry in a transferring student's error log. It shifts within about three scripts once the student watches method marks being awarded to the working they nearly omitted. Explaining the rule in the abstract achieves much less, because the habit lives in the hand.

Can a cautious Core tier placement be changed after my child arrives?+

Often, and the record is the argument. Schools place a transferring student cautiously because they have no internal data yet, which is reasonable and should not be permanent. Ask three things in writing: the tier for each subject, when the entry becomes final, and what evidence would cause a review. Then bring four weeks of dated scripts showing Core papers performing near the ceiling. Abu Dhabi schools differ, and some will review on internal evidence before entries close. Nobody offers a review if nobody asks for one.

Does my child need English support coming from ICSE?+

Usually less than families expect. ICSE's English demand is high, so the first IGCSE English scripts rarely show a language problem. What they show is paper convention: a summary offered where analysis was asked, or a well-written response that does not address the question's specific focus. Reading papers reward analysis of how a text works; writing papers follow the task specification rather than general prose quality. That is four to six marked sessions. Confirm the First Language or Second Language placement with the school anyway, using a real piece of extended writing.

How many marked scripts a week are realistic for a family in Al Shamkha?+

One, honestly, and a plan should say so rather than promise two. Mainland communities have the longest commutes in the emirate to island schools, which means a timed paper usually happens at a weekend rather than on a weekday evening. That is perfectly workable provided it is genuinely timed, because an untimed script tells you nothing about the fault category that matters most at the end of a paper. Families in Al Raha or on the island can realistically produce two, because students are home earlier.

Why does the tutor keep setting the same paper format each week?+

Because a second attempt at the same format is what makes the first one interpretable. A mark on a Paper 2 and a mark on a Paper 4 are not comparable, and a Cambridge mark is not comparable to a Pearson one, so changing format weekly produces data that cannot show a trend. Holding it constant for three or four attempts lets you see whether a component genuinely moved. After that the format changes deliberately, to check whether the improvement transfers rather than being specific to one paper.

What should the record show after four weeks for it to be working?+

A change in the dominant error category, which is a better signal than a rise in the raw mark. The healthy sequence for a transferring student runs from command-word misread and method error towards slips and timing, because the later faults are cheaper to fix than the earlier ones. The unhealthy pattern is the same dominant category at weeks one, three, five and seven, which means the sessions are not addressing the fault. Adding a second session to that plan doubles the cost of not addressing it.

How is the science practical component assessed and what should we track?+

Either through a practical examination or through an alternative written paper, depending on the route the school enters candidates for, so confirm which applies to each science first. Both assess design and evaluation rather than execution. Track three things in each marked script: whether the variables were identified and controlled correctly, whether the table and graph met convention, and whether the evaluation named a real limitation rather than a general one. Three or four written sessions per science usually closes the gap, and the gain appears quickly because the marks are formulaic.

Which IGCSE series will my child sit, and does the Indian spring sitting apply?+

June or November. Cambridge runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May and June and again in November. The Cambridge February and March series is offered to India only, so advice or material written for an Indian audience about a spring sitting does not apply to a candidate entered in this emirate, which is worth knowing for exactly this transfer.

My child joined in January. Is the June series realistic?+

Four weeks of marked scripts will answer that faster than any discussion. Where the taught course cannot be completed before the papers, no plan of sessions changes the arithmetic, and the honest options are a November entry, a reduced subject list, or both. That conversation belongs with the school in the first fortnight, because entries close months ahead of the papers and the window for choosing differently is shorter than it feels. The record is what makes the case concretely rather than as an opinion about readiness.

The error log has not changed in a month. Is more tuition the answer?+

Not until you know why. If the dominant error category has been identical across four marked attempts at the same format, a second session doubles the cost of not addressing the fault. The right question is what specifically will be different next week, asked about the error category rather than about effort. Sometimes the answer is a different tutor, and we would rather say so than take the booking. A second session genuinely helps where the record shows timing as the main fault, because that responds to volume of full timed practice.

Can we see the error log, or is it just for the tutor?+

You should be able to read it without the tutor present, which is the whole point of keeping it in that shape. Date, paper and component, raw mark against the available mark, and the dominant error category, with the components never averaged into a single percentage. If a provider will not commit to a record you can read, you have no way to judge the term except by how the sessions feel, which after a board change is the least reliable measure available. Ask for it as a condition of the arrangement.

Are tutors in Abu Dhabi required to hold a permit, and does it affect the price?+

Individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need the MoHRE private tutor work permit, introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and, per u.ae, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible categories include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Because the permit is free, any provider citing permit costs as a rate driver is inventing one. No fine schedule is published for tutoring without a permit, so no amount should be quoted to you either.

Can IB Gram promise my child settles into IGCSE within a term?+

No. What we commit to is the record: dated scripts with components separated, a named error category on each, the same format held constant so attempts are comparable, and an honest reading of the trend including when it says stop. That is checkable and it is more than this market usually offers. We publish no outcome statistics, because a figure without its sample size, date and method is a marketing claim rather than evidence, and we publish no self-assigned star rating and no guaranteed grade.

Keep the record, read the trend

If you are managing an ICSE to IGCSE transition in Abu Dhabi, make the record the condition of whatever you buy. Get the tier, board, specification code, series, science experimental route and Cambridge zone in writing from the school first, because a record built on the wrong paper is worse than none. Then ask for dated scripts with components separated and a named error category on each, and start with a three-script diagnostic rather than a term. We will read the trend with you, argue a tier review where the scripts support one, and say plainly when the sessions should stop. A free trial lesson comes first, one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
