IB Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB tutor in Abu Dhabi should be able to prove what changed. This page is about the evidence: the marked paper showing that a 5 was a 6 with two missing causal chains, the Internal Assessment draft annotated against criterion letters rather than rewritten, and the fortnightly note naming which topics moved and which did not. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, recorded so July work is still usable in April, and the first lesson is free.

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Evidence, not reassurance

Most families looking for Diploma Programme support in Abu Dhabi start from the same place: a mid-term report with a number on it, a child who says the lessons are fine, and no way to tell which of those two is right. The number is a teacher's best judgement built from classwork and one or two assessments. It is not a diagnosis. It does not say whether the 5 came from thin content knowledge, from answers that describe when the command term asked for explanation, or from running out of time on the last two questions of Paper 2.

The useful standard for a tutor is therefore not how the sessions feel. It is what exists on paper four weeks in. A marked script with the mark scheme wording beside each dropped mark. An Internal Assessment draft carrying criterion letters in the margin and a note explaining why criterion C is sitting at 1 out of 3. A short written summary every fortnight that a parent who does not teach the subject can still read and act on. Those three artefacts are cheap to produce and almost impossible to fake, which is why this page is built around them.

Abu Dhabi makes this more useful than it would be elsewhere, because the emirate's Diploma cohort is spread thinly across a lot of schools. Enrolment sits in three broad bands: the island schools around Saadiyat, Al Bateen and the Corniche, the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, and the newer mainland communities out towards Al Shamkha and Zayed City. A family in one band rarely knows how another band's school marks a mock, so the only reliable comparison is against the IB criteria themselves rather than against a neighbour's report card.

The Department of Education and Knowledge licenses and inspects private schools in the emirate and publishes its own inspection ratings, which tells you about the school as an institution. It does not tell you about one student's Paper 1 technique. Those are different instruments measuring different things, and conflating them is how a family at a highly rated school concludes there cannot be a problem while a Chemistry grade slides from 6 to 4 across two terms.

What follows is the whole apparatus: what a tutor can show you after four weeks, how to read a marked Diploma script, what the Internal Assessment criteria actually reward letter by letter, how an Abu Dhabi school arrives at a predicted grade, where the honest limits sit on coursework, and what the tutor pool in this time zone genuinely covers. Sessions are delivered one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, and the reason that is an advantage rather than an apology is explained below.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Support splits by programme, because the assessment machinery is different in each. These are the four IB stages Abu Dhabi families ask about, with what evidence of progress looks like in each. The Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme are not simply harder and easier versions of the same thing; they reward different behaviours and are marked on different instruments.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and Creativity, Activity, Service. Up to 45 points, with 24 the minimum for the Diploma to be awarded and failing conditions attached. Evidence of progress here is specific: marks on past-paper sections under time, criterion scores on an exploration draft, and the gap between a predicted grade and what the scripts actually show.

Abu Dhabi DP students carry a timetable constraint most descriptions ignore. Mandatory UAE subject requirements run alongside the Diploma, and several schools in the emirate also stream Arabic separately, so a DP1 student can be carrying eight or nine timetabled commitments rather than six. When something slips it is usually the subject with the latest internal deadline, not the hardest one.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Assessed against four criteria per subject on a one-to-eight scale, converted to a grade out of seven. The useful work here is translating criterion language into something a student can act on, because an MYP report gives a profile across criteria and most students read only the final number. Progress evidence is a criterion score moving, not a percentage.

The MYP-to-DP transition is the single most common reason an Abu Dhabi family makes contact. MYP rewards process, reflection and an approach to learning; the Diploma rewards precision under time. A student who was comfortably achieving 6s in MYP Mathematics can land at 4 in the first DP1 test without anything having gone wrong, because the instrument changed.

IBCPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

DP courses combined with a career-related study, a reflective project, personal and professional skills and language development. Fewer schools offer it, so families often find little written about it. Support looks much like DP support for the academic courses, with separate attention to the reflective project, which is assessed on its own criteria and is frequently left too late.

Where a school in the emirate runs the Career-related Programme alongside the Diploma, the two cohorts often share teachers and timetables. That can mean the reflective project gets less supervision time than an Extended Essay, which is exactly when an outside reader annotating a draft against the criteria is worth most.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Transdisciplinary and inquiry-led, with no external examinations. Tutoring at this stage is narrow and should stay narrow: number fluency, reading comprehension and written expression, taught in short sessions. Evidence of progress is a reading level, a timed arithmetic score, or a piece of writing next to the same task six weeks earlier.

PYP families in Abu Dhabi usually make contact for one of two reasons: a move between curricula mid-year, or preparation for an entrance assessment at a school with a waiting list. Both are short, defined pieces of work rather than ongoing tuition, and that is how they should be quoted.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Nine Diploma subjects account for most of the Abu Dhabi enquiry volume. Each note below says what the component weightings reward and where the marks tend to go, because that is the level of detail a tutor's first session has to work at. Confirm the current weightings for your child's cohort with the school's Diploma coordinator, since subject guides are revised between cohorts.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebraic fluency carries everything above it, and HL adds proof, complex numbers and substantially harder calculus. The exploration is worth 20 per cent of the grade and is marked out of 20 across five criteria. Most lost paper marks come from method not being written down, so partial credit is unavailable when a final answer is wrong.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and technology-heavy work, with a graphing calculator assumed throughout. Students who chose this course to avoid algebra discover the regression and hypothesis-testing content is unforgiving in its own way. The exploration suits this course well, because real data is easier to find than an original pure-mathematics question.

Physics

HL and SL

The 2023 subject guide reorganised the content into themes, and the Internal Assessment is a single scientific investigation marked out of 24 across four criteria worth 20 per cent of the grade. Paper marks go missing in the extended-response questions, where a correct physical idea is stated without the derivation the mark scheme asks for.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms produce the widest mark spread. Students who are secure on the mole and on reaction mechanisms tend to be secure overall. The investigation criteria reward a controlled research design and an honest evaluation far more than an impressive-sounding title, and drafts routinely lose marks on evaluation alone.

Biology

HL and SL

Volume rather than difficulty. The command terms do most of the damage: an answer that describes a process when the question asked the student to explain or to compare loses marks on knowledge the student plainly has. Data-based questions are the most coachable component in the subject and are usually the least practised.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy and evaluation decide grades. A labelled diagram with the axes correct and the shift explained earns marks that prose alone will not, and the top band requires a judgement with a reason attached. HL adds policy analysis and quantitative work that students consistently underestimate until the first full paper.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen analysis in Paper 1, comparative essay in Paper 2, plus the individual oral and, at HL, the HL essay. Marks are awarded against criteria rather than a content checklist, so a student who has never read the criteria is guessing. The oral is the most improvable component because it is rehearsable.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tool application is the hidden skill: knowing which framework the question invites and applying it to the stimulus rather than reciting it. The HL extension and the case study reward preparation done months ahead. Evaluation at the top band needs a conclusion that chooses, not one that lists considerations and stops.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core, all Diploma candidates

Together worth up to three bonus points. The Extended Essay is marked out of 34 across five criteria with a 4,000-word ceiling, and criterion C on critical thinking carries 12 of those marks. Most drafts are strong on knowledge and weak on critical thinking, which is precisely where the marks are concentrated.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of booking cover almost every Diploma enquiry in the emirate, and they differ in what they produce rather than in how many hours they consume. Choose by the artefact you need at the end, not by the hours at the start.

Weekly one-to-one with fortnightly evidence

One subject, one level, one tutor, with a timed section marked every second session and a written note to the parent on the same cycle. This is the default for a student whose grade has drifted and who needs the drift explained before it is treated. It runs across a term rather than in a burst.

  • 60 or 90 minutes weekly, at a fixed slot in Gulf Standard Time
  • Timed questions marked to the published criteria every fortnight
  • A one-page note to the parent, written to be acted on
  • Session recordings retained for revision

Draft reading against the criteria

A defined piece of work rather than ongoing tuition. The student's own exploration, investigation, Extended Essay or reflective project draft is read and annotated criterion by criterion, with the mark allocation named and the gap to the next band explained. The student then revises it themselves, which is the only version that is permissible.

  • Criterion letters and mark allocations quoted explicitly
  • Annotations explain the band gap, they do not supply replacement text
  • One follow-up session to work through the annotations
  • Nothing is written, supplied or edited to completion for the student

Pre-examination intensive

A short block in the weeks before a mock or the May session, built from past-paper volume and timing rather than from content. Sessions are longer and closer together, and the measurement is marks per paper under time. It suits a student whose knowledge is reasonable and whose execution is not.

  • Two or three sessions a week for four to six weeks
  • A full paper under exam conditions in the first week, marked
  • Error log maintained as the planning document
  • Timing per mark practised explicitly, with a clock visible

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What an IB tutor in Abu Dhabi can show you after four weeks

Four weeks is eight sessions at two a week, or four at one. It is enough to produce a complete evidence set and not enough to disguise its absence. If, at the end of four weeks, the only available account of progress is that the student seems more confident, then nothing has been measured and nothing can be corrected. Confidence is a pleasant side effect of competence and a poor proxy for it, and a student can feel markedly better about a subject while scoring exactly the same.

The artefacts in the table below are deliberately cheap. Marking a timed section against a published mark scheme takes a tutor twenty minutes. Annotating a draft with criterion letters takes thirty. Writing a one-page note takes ten. None of it requires a platform, a dashboard or a progress percentage, and the absence of any of it after a month is information in its own right. A tutor who will not produce them is either not marking or not willing to show you what the marking found.

The one artefact worth insisting on is the annotated script itself, returned to you rather than described. A tutor who marks a paper and reports that it went reasonably well has given you their judgement. A tutor who returns the script with three dropped marks circled and the mark scheme phrasing written beside each has given you something your child can use on the next paper, and something you can compare against the same exercise six weeks later.

02

Reading a marked Diploma script: the difference between a 5 and a 6

A grade boundary is a total, and totals are assembled from small, repeated decisions. Across a full Diploma paper the gap between a 5 and a 6 is commonly six or seven raw marks, which in practice is three questions where an answer stopped one step short. That is the most important thing a parent can understand about a marked script: the difference is rarely a topic, and almost never intelligence. It is a pattern, and patterns are teachable.

The patterns repeat across subjects. Method not written down, so a slip in the final line costs all the marks instead of one. A causal chain with one link missing, which reads perfectly well and scores half. An evaluation that lists considerations without choosing between them, when the top band explicitly requires a judgement. A data question answered from memory rather than from the data supplied. A diagram with unlabelled axes. None of these is a knowledge problem, and all of them are visible in twenty minutes of marking.

The second thing a marked script shows is time. Diploma papers are tight, and a student who writes a beautiful answer to question three has borrowed the minutes from question eleven. Where the last page of a paper is thinner than the first, the problem is triage rather than content, and the remedy is practice with a clock visible and a review afterwards of what the clock cost. Neither of those can be diagnosed from a report card, which is why the first session is a paper rather than a conversation.

03

The Internal Assessment criteria, letter by letter

Every Diploma Internal Assessment is marked against named criteria with published mark allocations, and no competitor page in this market names a single one. That is the gap this section fills, because a student who knows criterion C carries three marks and is awarded for personal engagement behaves differently from a student who has only been told to make the work their own and to show some personal engagement.

The two most commonly tutored examples make the point. A Mathematics exploration is marked out of 20 across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, with the last carrying the largest share. A science investigation under the current guide is marked out of 24 across four criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, and is worth 20 per cent of the final grade at both levels. The Extended Essay is marked out of 34, with critical thinking alone worth 12.

Knowing the allocation changes where effort goes. Students routinely spend a fortnight polishing presentation, worth four marks, and an afternoon on evaluation, worth six. Drafts arrive strong on description and weak on the criterion that pays most. Reading a draft against the letters, naming the band it currently sits in and explaining the gap is a thirty-minute job that often moves more marks than six hours of content teaching, and it is entirely compatible with the student having written every word of it themselves.

How an Abu Dhabi school arrives at a predicted grade

Predicted grades matter more to Diploma families in this emirate than they do in many places, because university applications to the United Kingdom, North America and the UAE all run on them, and they are set before the examinations exist. A predicted grade is a professional judgement by the subject teacher, moderated across a department and signed off by the Diploma coordinator. It is built from mock performance, classwork, internal assessment marks and the teacher's read on trajectory.

Two things follow. The first is that mock papers carry disproportionate weight, so a student who underperforms in a January mock for reasons of timing rather than knowledge can be predicted below their real level for the whole application cycle. The second is that evidence outside the school counts for very little on its own. A tutor cannot and should not try to change a prediction. What a tutor can do is produce marked work, under time, that a student can take to a teacher as a basis for a conversation about whether the prediction still reflects the trajectory.

That conversation goes better with artefacts than with assertions. A script marked to the published criteria, dated, with the error log showing the same mistakes disappearing over six weeks, is a reasonable thing to put in front of a subject teacher. An assurance that the student has been working hard with a tutor is not, and teachers hear it constantly. The tone matters too: the aim is to give the department information it did not have, not to dispute its judgement.

05

ADEK, inspection ratings and what a school report does not measure

In Abu Dhabi, the Department of Education and Knowledge supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, according to the UAE government's own portal, and publishes inspection outcomes for them. That is worth knowing and it is also worth bounding. ADEK is named by none of the competitors researched for this market, so parents who do read inspection reports are usually doing it alone and without a sense of what the instrument covers.

An inspection rates a school: leadership, teaching quality, provision, outcomes at a cohort level. It is an institutional measurement. It cannot tell you whether your child's Paper 2 technique is sound, and a school rated highly can contain a student whose Chemistry has quietly slipped two grades across a year. The reverse also holds. Treating the inspection band as a proxy for one student's position is a category error, and it is one that costs families a term of inaction.

The regulator map across the UAE is worth having straight for another reason: families move between emirates and the rules change with them. The table below is drawn from the government's own description of each body. Nothing on it implies any relationship between IB Gram and any regulator, and none exists. ADEK also sets professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff, which have been reported as prohibiting teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school; verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy before relying on it.

Grade movement: what can be measured and what cannot

No honest tutor promises a grade. The examination is marked by someone else, the boundaries move between sessions, and the student has five other subjects competing for the same evenings. Anyone promising a specific number in advance should be asked how they propose to control a paper they do not mark, and any page quoting a success percentage without naming the sample size, the date and the method is quoting a figure it cannot support.

What can be measured is narrower and more useful. Raw marks on comparable timed sections, four weeks apart. The count of recurring errors in the log, which should fall. Criterion scores on successive drafts of the student's own Internal Assessment. Completion of the weekly named output. Time taken per mark on a full paper. These are all countable, all dated, and all produced as a by-product of the teaching rather than as a separate reporting exercise.

The honest shape of movement is also worth saying out loud, because expectations set wrongly in September cause families to stop in November. Technique problems move fastest, often inside a month, because the knowledge is already there. Missing foundational content takes a term, because it has to be taught and then integrated. Reading speed and written fluency in a second language move slowest of all and need a year. A tutor who cannot say which of the three your child has is not yet in a position to predict anything.

07

The academic-honesty line around an Internal Assessment draft

  • A tutor teaches, questions and annotates; the student revises their own work
  • Criterion letters and mark allocations are explained, not applied on the student's behalf
  • No assessed work is authored, supplied or edited to completion
  • Feedback is written down so it can be audited by a supervisor or a parent

This boundary is the most important thing on the page, and it is the thing this market gets worst. At least one site ranking for these queries sells finished Internal Assessments outright. Buying one is malpractice under IB rules, and the consequence falls on the student's own certification rather than on the seller. No amount of time pressure makes that a sensible purchase, and no reputable tutor will go near it.

The permissible version is narrower and genuinely more useful. A tutor teaches the skill the task assesses. A tutor explains what each criterion rewards and how many marks it carries. A tutor reads a draft the student has produced and writes down what the criteria would and would not credit in it. A tutor asks the questions that make the student notice the weak link in their own reasoning. Then the student revises it. The revision has to be theirs, in their own words, with their own judgements.

Two practical consequences. Feedback is written rather than spoken, so what was said can be checked later by the student, by a parent or by a coordinator who asks. And board materials are referenced and linked rather than reproduced: syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB and are used on screen from the official source, not redistributed as files. Both of those are also what a supervisor would want to see if they asked how the support worked.

08

Delivery, and the Abu Dhabi tutor pool as it actually is

Every session is one-to-one and runs over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors into homes anywhere in the United Arab Emirates; in-home visiting exists only as an India service. The reason this is a feature rather than a limitation is arithmetic. The number of people who can teach Diploma Physics HL to a high standard and who also live within a reasonable drive of Al Shamkha and are free at 17:30 on a Tuesday is very small. The number who can do it over a shared screen is much larger.

The second reason is subject scarcity. Abu Dhabi's Diploma cohort is smaller than Dubai's and spread across more schools, so niche combinations are genuinely thin on the ground: Higher Level Further Mathematics, Group 2 languages beyond French and Spanish, Design Technology, Music. A family insisting on a tutor who can physically attend is choosing from whoever is nearby, which in these subjects frequently means nobody at all.

Where coverage is thin, you are told before booking rather than after. The options are a specialist in another time zone with the session times that implies, a wait for a slot with a UAE-hours tutor, or a straight no. No competitor page in this market discloses a coverage limit anywhere, and several route UAE parents to a non-UAE phone number without mentioning it. Disclosure costs us some bookings and is the only version of this that survives contact with a parent who asks a direct question.

The first fortnight, step by step

Nothing useful happens until the right document is on the table. For a Diploma student that means three things: the subject and level exactly as the school has entered it, the most recent report or mock mark, and one piece of marked work. The third is the one families forget and the one that matters most, because a teacher's annotations on a real script tell a tutor more in five minutes than a term of report grades.

The free trial lesson comes next and is a real lesson with the tutor who would teach the course, not a sales call with a coordinator. No card details are needed to book it. The point of the trial is to find out whether the student will talk to this particular person about something they find difficult, which is not a question any amount of credential-reading answers.

Session one proper is a timed section of a past paper at the correct level, marked against the published mark scheme while the student watches. That produces the error log. Session two works the single highest-cost item in the log. By the end of the fortnight there is a written plan with a named weekly output, a marked script, a log and a one-page note to you. If any of those four is missing at the end of two weeks, the arrangement is not yet doing what this page describes, and that is worth saying out loud rather than waiting until March.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi communities and what the evidence cycle looks like in each

Delivery is identical everywhere because the sessions run over live video. What differs by community is the school cluster a student sits in, which internal deadlines they are working to, and when a session can realistically start. These seven generate most of the Diploma enquiries in the emirate.

Saadiyat Island

A small, high-attainment Diploma cohort where predicted grades are set early and competitively. Families here most often want an outside reading of an exploration draft against the criteria, rather than content teaching, and they want it before the school's first internal deadline.

Al Reem Island

Fast-growing and school-dense, with students who have often moved curricula within the last two years. The first piece of evidence worth producing here is a timed paper section, because a transferred student's report history is not comparable with their current cohort's marking.

Khalifa City

The largest single source of DP enquiries in the emirate, and the one with the most sibling bookings. Two students in the same household on different Diploma years is common, which makes a fortnightly written note more useful than a verbal update nobody can audit.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

Villa and waterfront households with long school runs and a 17:00 that frequently becomes 17:40. Evening slots after 19:00 are routine here, and a recorded session matters because the student is often tired at the time the session has to happen.

Yas Island

A mixed curriculum catchment where some students are in an American diploma stream and taking IB courses alongside it. Clarifying which assessment instrument a given piece of work is being marked on is the first job, and it is less obvious than it sounds.

Al Bateen and the Corniche

Long-established schools with experienced Diploma departments and detailed internal marking. Evidence here is best framed as a second opinion: the same script read against the published criteria by someone who did not teach the course.

Al Mushrif and Al Nahyan

Central, with a high proportion of students carrying Arabic as a first language alongside the Diploma. Timetable load rather than subject difficulty is the usual problem, and the evidence that matters is which commitments are actually slipping.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat, Al Bateen and the Corniche

The island cluster, where Diploma teaching is long established and internal assessment is tightly managed. Students we support from these schools most often arrive with a draft and a deadline rather than a content gap, which changes what the first session is for.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the subject, the level and one marked script

The subject and level as the school entered them, the latest report or mock mark, and one piece of work a teacher has already annotated. The marked script is the item that shortens the diagnosis most, because it shows how the student's own department is reading their work rather than how a report grade summarises it.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson with the tutor who would teach

A real lesson on real content, booked without card details, with the person who would take the course rather than a coordinator. The question it answers is whether the student will say out loud that they do not understand something, in front of this particular adult. Credentials cannot tell you that.

  3. 03

A timed diagnostic, marked while the student watches

Session one is a past-paper section at the correct level, marked against the published mark scheme in real time. The student sees each mark awarded and refused, with the scheme's own wording. The output is an error log classified by topic and command term, which becomes the planning document for everything after.

  4. 04

Fortnightly marked work and a one-page note

Every second session ends with timed questions, marked and annotated, returned to you rather than described. The note that follows names what moved, what has not, and what the next fortnight targets. It is written so a parent who does not teach the subject can still tell whether the arrangement is working.

  5. 05

A term review against the error log

At the end of a term, the first diagnostic is set beside the most recent one and the recurring-error count is compared. That comparison is the only honest measure of whether the hours bought anything. Where it shows little movement, the right response is to change the approach or stop, and we will say so.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Artefacts, not assurances

A marked script, an annotated draft, an error log and a one-page note exist after four weeks or the arrangement is not working. Every one of them is cheap to produce and hard to fake, which is exactly why they are the standard this page asks you to hold any tutor to, including ours.

Criteria quoted by letter

Internal Assessment feedback names the criterion, its mark allocation and the band the draft currently sits in. No competitor page in this market names a single criterion letter. A student who knows critical thinking carries 12 of the Extended Essay's 34 marks spends their time differently.

No grade promises, and measurement instead

Nobody here promises a particular number, because the paper is marked elsewhere and the boundaries move between sessions. What is offered instead is comparable timed marks four weeks apart, a falling recurring-error count, and dated criterion scores on successive drafts of the student's own work.

The honest line on assessed work

A tutor teaches, questions and annotates. The student writes. Nothing assessed is authored, supplied or edited to completion, and feedback is written down so a supervisor can see how the support worked. In a market where finished Internal Assessments are openly for sale, saying this plainly is a real differentiator.

Coverage stated before you book

Some Diploma subjects are genuinely thin in UAE evening hours, and you are told which before anything is paid for. The alternatives are a different time slot, a wait, or a straight no. Filling a Further Mathematics HL request with a generalist helps nobody and is the kind of thing that only surfaces in week three.

Built for the Abu Dhabi week

Sessions are fixed in Gulf Standard Time, scheduled around a school run that often overruns, and recorded so a tired 19:30 session is still usable the next morning. During Ramadan slots move to post-Iftar timing by arrangement rather than being quietly cancelled.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What should an IB tutor be able to show me after a month in Abu Dhabi?+

Four things, all on paper. A timed past-paper section marked against the published mark scheme and returned to you rather than summarised. An error log classifying every dropped mark by topic and command term, with the recurring items visible. A written plan naming one output a week. And a one-page note every fortnight saying what moved and what did not. Each takes a tutor under half an hour to produce. If none of them exists after four weeks, nothing has been measured, and a pleasant improvement in confidence is not a substitute. That is the standard to hold any tutor to, including ours.

My son's report says 5 but his teacher says he is capable of 7. Who is right?+

Both, usually, and a marked script settles it in an hour. A report grade is a professional judgement assembled from classwork and one or two assessments; it does not decompose into causes. A timed paper marked against the criteria does. The common finding is that the 5 is built on reasonable content knowledge plus three repeating technique faults: method not written down, causal chains missing a link, and the last two questions thinned out by poor timing. Those move fast because the knowledge is already there. A 5 built on two untaught topics is a different problem and takes a term rather than a month.

Can a tutor help with my daughter's Internal Assessment without crossing a line?+

Yes, within a boundary worth stating precisely. A tutor teaches the skill the task assesses, explains what each criterion rewards and how many marks it carries, reads a draft your daughter has produced and writes down what the criteria would credit and refuse in it. She then revises it herself, in her own words, with her own judgements. What is never acceptable is authoring, supplying or editing assessed work to completion. At least one site ranking for these searches sells finished Internal Assessments; that is malpractice under IB rules and the consequence lands on the student's certification.

How many marks is the Mathematics exploration worth and how is it split?+

The exploration is worth 20 per cent of the final Mathematics grade and is marked out of 20 across five criteria: presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, with the last of those carrying the largest single allocation. The practical consequence is that students usually spend their time in the wrong place, polishing presentation and treating reflection as a closing paragraph when it is meant to run through the whole piece. Confirm the current allocation against your child's own subject guide with the Diploma coordinator, because guides are revised between cohorts and a stale allocation is worse than none.

Will tutoring change the predicted grade my school has given?+

Not directly, and no tutor should claim otherwise. A prediction is the subject teacher's judgement, moderated in the department and signed off by the coordinator, built mainly from mock performance and internal assessment. What tutoring can produce is evidence to put in front of that teacher: timed scripts marked to the published criteria, dated, with an error log showing the same mistakes disappearing over six weeks. That gives the department information it did not have. It is a conversation about trajectory, not a challenge to a professional judgement, and framing it the second way reliably goes badly.

Does an ADEK inspection rating tell me whether my child needs a tutor?+

No, and the two are frequently confused. The Department of Education and Knowledge supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi and publishes inspection outcomes, which measure the school: leadership, teaching quality, provision and cohort-level results. That is an institutional instrument. It says nothing about one student's Paper 2 timing or their standing within their own cohort. A strong school can contain a student whose Chemistry has drifted from 6 to 4 over a year, and a weaker rating does not mean a given student is behind. For an individual, the only reliable evidence is a marked script.

How quickly can an Abu Dhabi family get a first Diploma session?+

For the common subjects, two to five days. Mathematics at either level, the three sciences, English A, Economics and Business Management are all reasonably covered in UAE evening hours, with the 17:00 to 19:00 band being the tightest because every family wants it. Group 2 languages beyond French and Spanish take one to three weeks. Further Mathematics HL, Design Technology and Music are genuinely thin and can take longer or be unavailable, in which case you are told that rather than offered a generalist. Coverage is disclosed before booking, which no competitor page in this market does.

Is online tutoring really as effective as having someone sit next to my child?+

For Diploma work the trade favours video, and the reason is the size of the pool you are choosing from. In-home means choosing whoever teaches the subject, lives within a reasonable drive and is free at 17:30. Online means choosing from everyone who teaches that paper at that level. In Abu Dhabi, where the Diploma cohort is spread across many schools and niche subjects are thin, that difference is often the difference between a specialist and a generalist. Sessions use a shared whiteboard, a document camera so handwritten working is visible both ways, and the real past paper annotated live.

What does a fortnightly note actually say?+

One page, four parts. What was taught, in specification language rather than in adjectives. What the marked work showed, with the raw mark and the comparison against the last one. Which items in the error log have stopped recurring and which have not. And what the next fortnight targets, with the named output. It is deliberately written for a parent who does not teach the subject, which means no jargon without a translation and no progress percentage, because a percentage invented by a tutor measures nothing and sounds like it measures everything.

My child is in DP1 and already behind. Is it too early for a full plan?+

DP1 is the best possible time, and the reason is the Internal Assessment calendar rather than the content. School-set internal deadlines for explorations, investigations and the Extended Essay cluster in the second half of DP1 and the first term of DP2, and a student who is behind on content will meet those deadlines while still behind. Fixing a foundational gap in DP1 costs a term; fixing it in DP2 competes with coursework that has a fixed date. Starting early also means the error log has two full terms of history by the time mock papers set predicted grades.

Do tutors in Abu Dhabi need a government permit, and can I check it?+

Yes. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, whose service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit for Private Tutor Licensing. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so treat any quoted figure with caution.

Can my child's own subject teacher tutor them privately in the evening?+

Reported ADEK professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before acting on it. The practical point stands regardless: the person who sets your child's predicted grade should not also be paid by you, and an outside reader marking against the published criteria gives you a genuinely independent second opinion rather than a reinforced one.

How long before marked evidence shows real movement?+

It depends entirely on which of three problems the student has, which is why the diagnosis comes first. Technique faults, such as missing working or absent causal links, often clear inside a month because the knowledge is present and only the output is wrong. Missing foundational content takes a term, because it has to be taught and then integrated into harder questions. Reading speed and written fluency in a second language take closer to a year and improve through volume rather than instruction. A tutor who cannot tell you which of the three applies after the first diagnostic should not be predicting timelines.

What happens at the end of a term if the evidence shows little change?+

You are told, with the two diagnostics side by side and the recurring-error count from the log. That comparison is the only honest measure of whether the hours bought anything, and sometimes the answer is that they did not. The useful responses are specific: change the tutor, because the subject match or the personal fit is wrong; change the approach, because the problem was volume and the sessions were treating it as understanding; or stop, because the constraint is sleep, timetable load or something outside a tutor's reach. Continuing without saying any of that is how families spend a year on nothing.

Can sessions move during Ramadan or exam weeks?+

Yes, and it is worth agreeing the pattern in advance rather than improvising. During Ramadan most Abu Dhabi families move sessions to post-Iftar timing, which usually means a later and shorter slot, and the plan is compressed rather than paused so that the Internal Assessment calendar does not slip. In school examination weeks the sensible move is often a genuine pause, because an extra session the night before a mock produces fatigue rather than marks. Both are arranged by asking. What is not acceptable is a quiet cancellation that leaves a block of paid hours unexplained.

Start with one marked script

If you do only one thing after reading this, send the subject and level exactly as the school entered them, the most recent mock mark, and one piece of work a teacher has already annotated. The free trial lesson can usually be sat within the week, with the tutor who would take the course. Session one is a timed paper section marked against the published mark scheme while your child watches, and by the end of a fortnight you will have a written plan, an error log, a marked script and a one-page note. Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and the coverage position for your subject is stated before anything is booked.
