IB DP German B Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

Most searches for an IB DP German B home tutor in Abu Dhabi start with a mark that does not match the effort behind it. German B is the course where a student can know a great deal of German and still lose a quarter of the available marks on text-type conventions and case endings. This page sets out what each of the four assessments actually asks for, where the marks leave, and what one session can realistically repair. Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video.

  • Four assessments, each a quarter of the grade — none of them an internal assessment
  • Paper 1 taught as text type first, language second, because that is the mark split
  • Case and word-order errors logged by class, not corrected sentence by sentence
  • Abu Dhabi slots on Gulf Standard Time; every lesson online over live video

Where German B marks actually go, and why effort does not predict them

German B is a language acquisition course in Group 2 of the Diploma, available at Standard and Higher Level, built on five prescribed themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation and sharing the planet. It is assessed by a written paper, a listening paper, a reading paper and an individual oral. There is no internal assessment and no coursework, which means nothing banked over two years protects a weak paper in May.

That structure explains the complaint Abu Dhabi families bring most often. A student has spoken German since Year 7, reads comfortably, enjoys the subject, and comes out of a mock with a 4. The reason is almost never the amount of German they know. It is that two of the four assessments reward things a conversational speaker never practises: writing inside the conventions of a specific text type, and surviving a listening passage played a fixed number of times at native speed.

Paper 1 is the clearest example. The candidate chooses one task from three and writes in the text type the task names — a blog entry, a formal letter, a report, a speech, an interview and similar forms. A reply that contains excellent German in the wrong register, without the layout and address conventions the text type requires, loses marks that no amount of extra vocabulary recovers. Students are rarely told this directly. They are told to revise.

The second cluster of lost marks is grammatical and almost entirely predictable. German has four cases and a word order that moves the verb depending on clause type, and under timed conditions candidates default to patterns that work in English. Dative after prepositions that take it, adjective endings after der- and ein-words, the verb pushed to the end in a subordinate clause: a handful of classes account for most of the damage across most scripts.

So a session is built around error classes rather than around corrections. Fixing a sentence teaches a student one sentence. Naming the class, showing the rule that governs it, drilling six instances and then testing it cold three weeks later is the only sequence that moves a grade, and it is the sequence a parent can actually audit, because each step leaves a dated artefact.

Delivery in the UAE is online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi and does not send a tutor to a UAE address; in-home tutoring is a service we offer only in India. German B is also a small-cohort subject in this emirate, which makes the online pool the difference between a specialist who has taught the course and whoever happens to be available within driving distance of your community on a weekday afternoon. At Higher Level, with two literary works to discuss, that difference decides what the hour is worth.

At a glance

  • Paper 1 marks text type and register alongside language quality
  • Paper 2 splits into a listening paper and a reading paper, assessed separately
  • The individual oral works from a visual stimulus at SL and a literary extract at HL
  • Higher Level adds two literary works and a longer written response
  • Error classes are logged, drilled and retested cold, not corrected in passing
  • All Abu Dhabi lessons are online one-to-one; no tutor visits an address here
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

German B candidates in Abu Dhabi arrive from three different places, and the course behaves differently for each. These programme notes describe what each route leaves a student holding when the Diploma starts.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across two years, with German B available in Group 2 at either level. Standard and Higher Level sit the same four assessment types; Higher Level requires two literary works, a longer written response and an oral built on a literary extract rather than an image. A Group 2 grade counts towards the Diploma total on the same seven-point scale as Physics or History.

Abu Dhabi German B classes are small, sometimes a single group covering both levels in one room. That has a practical consequence: an SL student in a mixed class is often taught to HL expectations, which looks like rigour and reads as discouragement. Ask the DP coordinator whether the levels are taught separately, because the answer changes what outside support should be doing with the hour.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP Language Acquisition places students in phases rather than year groups. A student finishing in Phase 4 or 5 usually enters German B comfortably; Phase 3 is the borderline, and the gap shows up in writing rather than in speaking, because MYP tasks reward communication while German B rewards accuracy inside a form.

Several Abu Dhabi IB continuum schools run German from Year 7 with two periods a week. That produces students who speak confidently and write loosely, which is exactly the profile that scores a 4 in a mock and then jumps on targeted written work. The MYP phase descriptor is worth bringing to a first session; it describes what the student could do, which is more useful than a report grade.

German-medium transfersAges 14-17 · Entering DP1 or mid-course

Students arriving from German-medium schooling

A student who attended a German-medium school until Year 9 or 10 holds grammar intuition a classroom learner does not. They also hold gaps: text-type conventions they were never taught, academic register they never needed, and reading speed in formal registers. German B is usually still the right course, and the useful work is narrow and fast.

Abu Dhabi's employment mix brings families through on two- and three-year postings, so mid-course transfers into the emirate's Diploma schools are routine. A transfer student entering DP2 needs the assessment map first and the language second: they often do not know that Paper 1 names a text type, or that the HL oral starts from a literary extract.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

German B rarely sits alone on a tutoring request. The list below covers what Abu Dhabi families most often pair with it, with a note on what the pairing actually demands rather than a syllabus summary.

German B

HL and SL

Written paper, listening paper, reading paper and individual oral, each carrying a quarter of the grade. Marks are lost on text-type conventions, case and adjective endings, subordinate-clause word order, and at HL on treating the literary extract as a comprehension exercise rather than a starting point for discussion.

German ab initio

Standard Level only

The beginner course for a student with no prior German. The distinction matters because a student misplaced into B spends two years being marked on a range they do not have. If a cold timed writing task produces fragments rather than sentences, the placement conversation is overdue.

English A: Literature

HL and SL

A common Group 1 pairing. The analytical habits transfer well to the HL German oral, where the extract has to be discussed rather than retold, and badly to Paper 1, where a literary register in a blog entry is penalised rather than rewarded.

History

HL and SL

Frequently chosen alongside German in Abu Dhabi cohorts, and the overlap is real: German-language source work builds exactly the reading-under-time skill the German B reading paper tests. The competing deadlines are the problem, not the content.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

Language students have unusually concrete TOK examples available — translation, untranslatable terms, how a language shapes a claim — and planting two of them deliberately during DP1 saves weeks of searching for examples later.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The usual Group 5 choice for students aiming at German-speaking universities in technical fields. The scheduling effect is what matters for a language plan: the AA internal assessment lands in the same term as German oral preparation in most Abu Dhabi schools.

Physics

HL and SL

Common among students planning engineering applications to German-speaking institutions. Those applications usually carry a separate language condition, which is worth checking in DP1 rather than discovering during the application cycle.

Arabic as an additional language

School-mandated streams

UAE private schools teach Arabic alongside their licensed curriculum, so a German B student here is learning two languages concurrently. The two sets of vocabulary interfere more than families expect, and separating revision by a day measurably improves retention of both.

Extended Essay

Core · 4,000 words

Can be registered in German B, written in German, on a literary or cultural question. It is a demanding choice that suits a strong HL candidate and punishes a borderline one, because a weak essay in the subject also consumes the time the language itself needed.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three session patterns cover nearly every German B request from this emirate. They differ in what they are able to repair, which is the thing to match against a marked script.

Error-class blocks

Three to six consecutive sessions aimed at one named class of error, usually case endings after prepositions, adjective endings, or verb position in subordinate clauses. Each block opens with a cold test of the previous one, so the evidence of whether it worked arrives before more hours are booked. Most written grades in German B move on two or three of these blocks rather than on general tuition.

  • One named error class per block, drilled and then tested cold weeks later
  • A written error log the student can read, with instance counts per script
  • A short timed task after each block, marked against criterion letters

Text-type workshops

A session per text type across the Paper 1 list: blog entry, formal letter, report, speech, interview, set of instructions and similar. Each workshop establishes the conventions, the register, the opening and closing moves, and the layout, then the student writes one under time. Text type is where German B candidates lose marks they did not know were on the table.

  • A one-page convention sheet per text type, written by the student
  • A timed response inside the word range for the level
  • Marking that separates text-type marks from language marks

Higher Level oral preparation

For HL candidates, sessions built on extracts from the two literary works, because the HL oral starts from a literary extract rather than an image. The work is discussion rather than retelling: placing the extract in the whole work, handling a question about theme, and keeping accuracy while thinking. Recorded, so the student can hear where accuracy drops.

  • Unseen extracts from the studied works under timed preparation
  • Follow-up questions pitched a band above current performance
  • Recordings kept so hesitation and case slips can be counted, not described

IB and IGCSE tutors available to students in Abu Dhabi

The tutors listed here work on German B as an assessed IB course rather than as general German conversation. For a Diploma candidate the difference shows up in the first marked script: a conversation tutor fixes the sentence in front of them, while a German B tutor names the error class and tests whether it has gone three weeks later.

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

The four German B assessments, and what each one is actually marking

German B is assessed by four things and nothing else: a written paper, a listening paper, a reading paper and an individual oral. Each carries a quarter of the final grade. There is no internal assessment, no coursework and no portfolio, so the entire grade is produced in a handful of hours at the end of a two-year course. That is unusual among Diploma subjects and it changes what tuition should be for.

Paper 1 asks for one written response, chosen from three tasks, in a named text type, inside a word range that is longer at Higher Level than at Standard. The mark is not a language mark alone. Register, audience, layout and the conventions of the form are assessed alongside grammatical accuracy and range, which is why a fluent student can be marked down for writing a well-constructed essay when the task asked for an interview.

Paper 2 is two separate papers sat in one session: a listening component and a reading component, each marked independently. Listening uses recordings played a set number of times, which makes it the least forgiving assessment in the course, because a missed detail cannot be revisited. Reading uses authentic texts containing words the candidate has never met, and the skill is locating and manipulating information rather than understanding every word.

The individual oral is where the two levels diverge most. Standard Level works from a visual stimulus connected to one of the prescribed themes; Higher Level works from an extract taken from one of the two literary works studied. In both cases a conversation follows, and in both cases candidates prepare the opening and neglect the conversation. Confirm the current weightings, timings and word ranges against the Language B guide held by your DP coordinator, since assessment details are set in the IB's own documents.

02

Paper 1 is a text-type exam wearing a writing exam's clothes

Ask a German B candidate what Paper 1 tests and most will say writing. Ask them what a report needs that a blog entry does not and the answers thin out immediately. That gap is worth roughly a grade to a student in the middle bands, and it is closed in about six sessions, which makes it the best-value work available in this course.

Each text type carries conventions that are not optional decoration. A formal letter needs the address conventions, the correct salutation and sign-off, and a register that stays formal through the whole piece. A blog entry needs a title, a direct address to a reader and a date line. A report needs headings, an impersonal register and a conclusion that does not editorialise. An interview needs question-and-answer alternation that reads like speech rather than prose.

The practical teaching move is to have the student write the convention sheet rather than receive it. One page per text type, in their own words, with an example opening and closing in German, built from past tasks. A student who has written the sheet remembers the moves; a student handed a sheet remembers having been given one. Those pages then become the revision material for the final weeks.

Register is the half of this nobody practises. German distinguishes formal and familiar address, and a candidate who mixes du and Sie inside one letter has made a register error that is visible to an examiner in the first line. Abu Dhabi students who use German socially with friends and family default to the familiar form under time pressure, which is why the error appears in mocks and not in homework.

PAPER 1 TEXT TYPES — WHAT EACH FORM REQUIRES BEYOND CORRECT GERMAN
Text typeRegister expectedConventions that must appearThe usual mistake
Formal letter or emailFormal throughout, Sie without slippingAddress block, dated salutation, formal sign-off, paragraphed argumentStarting formally and drifting into familiar address halfway down
Blog entryPersonal but written, not spokenTitle, direct address to a reader, date, a closing invitation to respondWriting an essay with a heading on top of it

InterviewSpoken register in written formAlternating questions and answers, interviewer framing, natural follow-upsBoth voices sounding identical, so the form collapses into prose
SpeechAddressed to a named audienceOpening address, signposting, rhetorical structure, a closing callNo audience in sight anywhere in the text
03

The four cases, and why they cost more marks than vocabulary ever will

German's case system is the single largest source of written error in this course, and it is not a vocabulary problem. A candidate can know the word and still mark it wrongly, because the case depends on the job the noun is doing in the sentence and on the preposition or verb governing it. Under time pressure, candidates reach for the nominative and move on.

The repair is mechanical. Each case is taught against its triggers rather than as an abstract table: the prepositions that always take the accusative, those that always take the dative, those that switch depending on whether there is movement, and the verbs that take a dative object without any preposition at all. Then adjective endings, which follow from the case and the article type, and which generate a second layer of error on top of the first.

Word order compounds it. German puts the conjugated verb second in a main clause and sends it to the end in a subordinate clause, and that single rule is responsible for a large share of the sentences that read as wrong without a parent being able to say why. A student who has internalised it writes longer sentences with fewer errors, because they stop avoiding subordinate clauses to stay safe.

None of this is taught by correcting scripts sentence by sentence. The error log counts instances by class across several pieces of work, the biggest class gets a block of sessions, and the cold retest three weeks later says whether it worked. That loop is slower than it sounds in a classroom of twenty-two and quick in a one-to-one hour, which is most of the argument for buying the hour.

THE FOUR GERMAN CASES AS A TUTORING TARGET — TRIGGERS AND FAILURE POINTS
CaseWhat it marks in the sentenceCommon triggers to drillWhere candidates lose the mark
NominativeThe subject of the clauseSubject position, and the verbs of being and becomingUsed as a default for every noun when writing against the clock
AccusativeThe direct object, and movement with two-way prepositionsPrepositions that always take it; motion towards a placeConfused with dative after two-way prepositions describing location
DativeThe indirect object, and position with two-way prepositionsPrepositions that always take it; verbs with a dative objectTreated as an exception list rather than a system, so it is guessed
GenitivePossession and a small set of prepositionsPossessive constructions and the prepositions that govern itAvoided entirely, which narrows range and costs marks in the band descriptors
Adjective endingsAgreement that follows from case and article typeEndings after der-words against ein-words, in each caseCorrect case chosen, then the adjective ending taken from the wrong column
04

The listening paper is a concentration test, and it is trainable

The listening component is the assessment Abu Dhabi families most often write off as fixed ability. It is not. Recordings are played a set number of times, at natural speed, and the marks go missing in three predictable places: numbers and dates, negation, and the third passage, by which point attention has degraded. All three respond to training rather than to talent.

Numbers are a German-specific problem. Two-digit numbers are spoken units-first, so a candidate who hears the digits in order writes them reversed, and dates and prices are exactly where such questions cluster. Ten minutes of dictation practice a week for a month removes a class of error that otherwise recurs in every mock.

Negation is the second. A single particle flips the meaning of a sentence, and a candidate concentrating on vocabulary hears the content words and misses the one that matters. Training here is specific: short passages where every answer depends on whether something happened or did not, taken cold, with the score recorded.

The third is stamina, which is why practice should be done at full paper length rather than in comfortable fragments. A student who always practises one passage will always perform well on the first and poorly on the last. Running the whole paper under exam conditions produces an attention curve, and the curve tells you where to intervene, usually with a deliberate reset routine between passages rather than with more vocabulary. Three full papers taken cold across a month, with the per-passage scores written down, will tell a family more about this component than any amount of discussion about whether their child is a good listener.

05

What the Higher Level literary works are for, and what they are not

Higher Level German B requires the study of two literary works, and the HL individual oral begins with an extract from one of them. That is the headline difference between the levels, and it is routinely misunderstood in both directions: students treat the works as literature to be analysed in the way their English A class would, or they treat the extract as a comprehension passage to be summarised.

Neither is what the oral rewards. The extract is a starting point for a discussion in German about the work and the ideas in it. The candidate needs to place the extract in the whole text, say something substantive about theme or character, and then sustain a conversation on it — all in accurate German, under time, with no notes to hide behind. Conceptual understanding is assessed alongside language, so content with poor German and good German with nothing to say both fall short.

Preparation therefore has two separate strands. One is knowledge of the works, deep enough to locate any extract and say what surrounds it. The other is the language of discussion: the structures for hedging, comparing, speculating and disagreeing, which are the exact structures a conversational speaker has never needed and a classroom learner has never practised aloud.

A practical warning for Abu Dhabi HL candidates: find out early which two works your school has chosen, and whether the choice is settled. Mid-course changes happen, and a student who has prepared one work thoroughly and met the second a fortnight before the oral is in avoidable difficulty. The question to ask the coordinator is simple and worth asking in DP1 rather than DP2.

06

Home tutoring in Abu Dhabi, and why a small-cohort language favours online

In-home tutoring is an established market here. A tutor drives to a villa in Khalifa City or an apartment in Al Bateen, teaches, and leaves. Published market comparisons put in-home one-to-one at roughly AED 180 to AED 350 an hour in this market, with monthly in-home packages advertised at around AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour sessions. Those are figures from published rate tables, not prices quoted by IB Gram.

IB Gram does not sell that service anywhere in the UAE. We do not send a tutor to an Abu Dhabi address and we do not run home visits in Abu Dhabi; in-home tuition is something we offer only in India. Every lesson here is one-to-one online, over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. The reason to publish that plainly is that the alternative wastes a parent's first conversation.

For German B specifically, the arithmetic favours online heavily. The number of German B specialists in one emirate who have taught this course, are free at 16:30 on a weekday, and live within a reasonable drive of your community is small, and at Higher Level, with two literary works to discuss, it gets smaller. Online, the only constraint left is the hour itself, which is the constraint a family can actually negotiate.

There is a second, less obvious gain. German error-class work depends on a written log kept across months, and online sessions produce that log as a by-product: the shared document, the marked script, the recorded oral. An in-home lesson leaves the student's notebook and the tutor's recollection, which is a weaker basis for deciding whether to buy another term.

07

Academic honesty when a parent at home speaks German

German B raises an honesty question that does not arise in most subjects, because a meaningful share of these candidates have a parent or grandparent who speaks German fluently. A family member who corrects a draft is acting generously and may also be producing a script the candidate could not have written, which under IB academic honesty rules is a problem for the candidate rather than for the relative.

The boundary is the same for a relative as for a paid tutor. Explaining a rule, pointing out that a paragraph contains an error without rewriting it, testing whether a correction has been learned, and discussing ideas for content are all legitimate. Supplying sentences, rewriting a paragraph into better German, or translating an English draft are not. The test is whether the student could reproduce the language unaided afterwards.

Machine translation sits on the wrong side of that line and is worth naming directly, because it is the live issue in language courses. Output from a translation tool in a Paper 1 response is visible to an experienced examiner precisely because it is better than the rest of the script, and the mismatch invites scrutiny of the whole piece. Where translation tools are genuinely useful is as material: comparing the tool's version with the student's own and explaining the differences is a strong session.

What a tutor working with us will do is mark the student's own work against criterion letters and explain the logic of the mark scheme. What a tutor will not do is produce the work, in any subject, at any level of urgency. That refusal is published here because a page that implies otherwise is selling the student a risk, not a service.

08

A German B session, minute by minute, and what it can repair

  • Minutes 0-10: cold test of the last target, scored and recorded
  • Minutes 10-40: one error class, one text type, or one extract — not three things
  • Minutes 40-55: the student writes the rule and three examples in their own words
  • Minutes 55-60: task set, session note filed, next cold test named
  • Across a term: an error log with instance counts, and timed papers marked by criterion

A session that improves a German B grade is more boring than families expect and leaves more behind. The first ten minutes are a cold test of the previous session's target — not a review, a test, with a score written down. If the score is poor, the session changes plan immediately, because teaching something new on top of something unlearned is the most common way paid hours are wasted.

The middle thirty minutes take one thing. A single error class with its triggers and a drill of six to ten instances, or one text type with its conventions and a short timed piece, or one literary extract placed and discussed. Two topics in an hour feels productive and retains worse than one, particularly at the end of a long Abu Dhabi school day with a bus commute in it.

The last fifteen minutes produce the artefacts. The student writes the summary rather than receiving it: the rule in their own words, three example sentences, the task set for the week. Then the session note goes to the shared folder with the cold-test score, what was taught, and what will be tested next time. A parent who cannot read German can still read that sequence and see whether anything is moving.

What this cannot repair is worth saying. One session does not move a grade. One session can fix a named class of error, establish a text type, or rescue an oral strategy. Three to six, aimed at the two or three classes a marked script actually shows, is what moves a 4 to a 5 or a 5 to a 6. Anyone promising more than that from an hour is selling optimism, and the IB does not mark optimism.

Where we tutor

German B students across Abu Dhabi, and what the week allows

Where a family lives in Abu Dhabi decides when a German session can start, which decides what the session can usefully contain. Grammar drilling survives a tired 19:00 slot; oral rehearsal does not.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Central and close to several of the emirate's long-established Diploma schools, so a 15:45 or 16:00 start is realistic. That early slot is the one to use for oral work, where fatigue shows up immediately in hesitation and in case errors.

Saadiyat Island

Short runs from the island schools and an early finish. Families here most often take two short weekday contacts, which suits error-class drilling better than a single long session that tries to cover writing and listening at once.

Khalifa City

Long bus journeys on the return leg from island schools. Writing and listening work better here than speaking, and a Saturday morning block is the usual answer for timed Paper 1 practice under exam conditions.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

Mixed British and IB intake with heavy after-school activity scheduling. German sessions in this corridor cluster at 18:30, which is fine for reading-paper technique and poor for the HL literary discussion.

Al Reem Island

Bridge traffic in the late afternoon makes a 16:00 start unreliable, so 17:30 is the dependable slot. Students here often prefer one 60-minute session plus a short written task returned marked midweek.

Yas Island and West Yas

Longer internal distances than the map suggests and a newer school mix. Weekend clustering works: a Friday block for timed writing, a short midweek contact to keep the error log moving.

Al Mushrif and Al Nahyan

Dense, established, and the part of the emirate where after-school demand peaks hardest between 16:00 and 18:00. Booking either side of that window usually produces a better specialist match for a minority language.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland communities with the longest commutes to the island schools. Online delivery converts a tutor's drive time into a second contact in the week, which is where German error-class work actually gets traction.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Corniche Diploma schools

The emirate's oldest Diploma cohorts, and the clusters most likely to run German B at both levels in one room. Worth asking whether SL and HL are separated, and whether the HL literary works have been chosen, because an unnamed pair of works in DP1 is a planning problem by DP2.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the marked script, not the report

A single marked Paper 1 attempt tells a German B tutor more than three terms of grades. Send it with the school, the year group, the level, and whether the two HL literary works have been chosen. If no marked work exists, say so — the trial session will produce one.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson that produces a timed script

The trial runs a short cold writing task and a listening passage rather than a conversation about goals. It is free, needs no card, and carries no obligation. You keep the marked script and the error-class list afterwards whether or not you book anything further.

  3. 03

An error log before a schedule

The output is a written list of error classes ranked by how many marks they are costing, the text types not yet mastered, and the recommended order of work. If two blocks of three sessions would do it, that is the recommendation rather than a year of weekly hours.

  4. 04

    Blocks, not open-ended weekly hours

Work is booked in short blocks against one named target, with a cold retest at the end of each. Lessons run online, one-to-one, over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and each one leaves a session note and any marked work in a shared folder you can open.

  5. 05

    Retest, then decide

At the end of a block the target is tested cold and the result is compared with the baseline. Continuing, changing target or stopping is decided on that number. A tutor who cannot show the number is asking you to re-book on a feeling.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Text type taught as a mark, not a formality

Paper 1 assesses register, audience and the conventions of the form alongside the German. Sessions treat that as half the task, because for mid-band candidates it is where the recoverable marks sit. The student writes the convention sheet themselves and keeps it for revision.

Error classes, counted and retested

Corrections teach one sentence; classes move a grade. Errors are logged by class with instance counts across several scripts, drilled in blocks, then tested cold weeks later. The retest score is the evidence, and you see it.

Higher Level literary work taken seriously

The HL oral starts from an extract from one of the two works studied, and it rewards discussion rather than summary. Tutors who take HL candidates have read the works and prepare unseen extracts, not generic conversation questions.

Online, one-to-one, and stated plainly

Every UAE lesson runs over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send a tutor to an Abu Dhabi address and does not run home visits here; that is an India-only service. Knowing it before booking is worth more than discovering it after.

A published line on assessed work

Tutors teach, model, mark and test. They do not write, rewrite or translate work that will be submitted, and they decline when asked, including when a deadline is close. Under IB rules the consequence of the alternative lands on the student.

Honest about availability

German B at Higher Level is a narrow specialism and availability is finite. If nobody suitable is free at your hour we say so, rather than seating a general German speaker in front of an HL candidate and letting the gap appear in a mock.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What is the real difference between German B at Standard and Higher Level?+

Both levels sit the same four assessment types, but Higher Level adds the study of two literary works, requires a longer written response in Paper 1, and builds the individual oral on an extract from one of those works instead of a visual stimulus. The reading and listening texts are also more demanding. Confirm word ranges and timings with your DP coordinator against the current Language B guide. The practical question for a family is not difficulty but fit: HL rewards a student who can discuss ideas in German, not simply one with good grammar.

Why does my son write accurate German and still lose marks in Paper 1?+

Almost always because the response is in the wrong form. Paper 1 names a text type, and register, audience, layout and the conventions of that form are assessed alongside the language. A beautifully written essay submitted where an interview or a report was asked for loses marks that extra vocabulary cannot recover. Ask to see a marked script with the text-type marks separated from the language marks. If nobody has ever separated them, that is the gap, and six sessions of text-type work usually closes it.

How long does it take to fix case and adjective ending errors?+

A named class of error typically takes a block of three to six sessions to drill, plus a cold retest two or three weeks later to show whether it held. Case errors come in classes rather than individually: prepositions that always take the dative, two-way prepositions, verbs with a dative object, then adjective endings on top. Fixing scripts sentence by sentence does not work because the student learns the sentence rather than the rule. Expect the error log to show falling instance counts per hundred words rather than a dramatic jump.

My daughter understands German films but scores badly in the listening paper. Why?+

Films give context, repetition and visual support, and the listening paper gives none of those. Marks go missing in three predictable places: two-digit numbers, which German speaks units-first; negation, where one short word flips an answer; and the later passages, where attention has degraded. All three are trainable. Short weekly number dictation, cold passages where every answer depends on negation, and full-length practice rather than single passages. Take a raw score first and date it, so the comparison after a month is like for like.

Which two literary works will my child study for Higher Level German B?+

The school chooses them, within the IB's requirements, so the answer comes from your child's teacher or DP coordinator rather than from a tutor. Ask in DP1 rather than DP2, and ask whether the choice is settled, because a late substitution leaves a candidate preparing one work well and meeting the second shortly before the oral. Once you know the titles, HL oral preparation can use unseen extracts from them under timed conditions, which is the only rehearsal that resembles the real task.

Is German B worth taking if my child has only had two periods a week since Year 7?+

Usually yes at Standard Level, and the MYP phase descriptor is the document that settles it. Two periods a week for several years produces students who speak with confidence and write loosely, which is a cheap profile to improve because the lost marks are concentrated in written accuracy and text type. Higher Level is a different question, since it adds two literary works and extended discussion. Bring a cold timed writing sample to the placement conversation; a dated script carries more weight than anyone's estimate.

Can a German-speaking parent help with Paper 1 practice at home?+

With real care. Explaining a rule, saying that a paragraph contains an error without rewriting it, testing whether a correction has stuck and discussing content ideas are all fine and genuinely useful. Rewriting the German, supplying sentences or translating an English draft are not, because the submitted work must be the student's own under IB academic honesty rules and the consequence falls on the candidate. The honest test is whether your child could produce the same language again unaided a week later.

Does using a translation tool for German homework cause a problem?+

For assessed work, yes. Translation output sits above the rest of a candidate's script and the mismatch is visible to an experienced examiner, which invites scrutiny of the whole piece. For practice, the tools are genuinely useful in one specific way: comparing what the tool produced with what the student wrote, and explaining each difference, teaches more grammar in twenty minutes than a worksheet does. The rule we work to is that nothing goes into submitted work that the student could not have written and cannot defend.

How many German B sessions does an Abu Dhabi student usually need to move a grade?+

Grades generally move on two or three error-class blocks of three to six sessions each, not on open-ended weekly tuition. The number depends on what a marked script shows: a candidate losing marks on text type and on dative prepositions needs roughly two blocks and a timed paper, while one whose issue is listening stamina needs a different and cheaper intervention. Be suspicious of any plan written before a marked script has been read, and of any promise about a specific grade, which nobody can honestly make.

Our family relocates mid-DP. Can German B support continue across countries?+

Yes, and this is where online delivery earns its place. Sessions run over live video and follow the family rather than the address, so a posting to another country, a long summer away or a term of travel does not interrupt the error log. Times are rebased to the new local time zone and the shared folder stays intact, which matters because German accuracy decays quickly during gaps. Tell us the new time zone a week ahead and the slot is moved rather than paused.

Does ADEK regulate what a private German tutor in Abu Dhabi may charge?+

No. ADEK, the Department of Education and Knowledge, supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate; it does not set private tutoring rates. Separately, individuals providing private tuition in the UAE need the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, which is granted free of charge for two years. Ask any tutor whether they hold it. Market rates are set by the market, and published comparisons put qualified online tutors in this emirate at roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour.

Does IB Gram send a German tutor to a villa in Khalifa City?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE, and no tutor is sent to a villa, apartment or compound here; in-home tutoring is offered only in India. German B lessons for Abu Dhabi families are one-to-one online, over live video, on Gulf Standard Time. For a narrow specialism this is the stronger arrangement: the tutor is chosen from everyone qualified who is free at your hour, rather than from the few who could drive to Khalifa City by 16:30.

Can German sessions move during Ramadan in Abu Dhabi?+

Yes. School days shorten, afternoons are harder, and speaking practice at 16:00 while fasting produces less than the same work after Iftar. Sessions move to post-Iftar slots for the month, and the content moves with them: reading-paper technique and written accuracy in any shorter afternoon slot, oral rehearsal later in the evening. What is worth avoiding is a complete month off, because the error classes that were falling tend to reappear and the first two sessions afterwards go on recovery.

What should a German B tutor send us after each session?+

A short note with four things in it: the cold-test score on the previous target, what was taught, the task set, and what will be tested next time. Plus any marked work with criterion letters written on it and the error class named. A parent who reads no German can still audit that sequence, because the question is whether the cold-test scores are rising. If the only output is a cheerful message that the session went well, there is nothing to audit.

Is it realistic to start German B tutoring eight weeks before the May papers?+

Realistic, but the plan has to change. Eight weeks is not long enough to clear several error classes, so the work becomes triage: one timed Paper 1 and one full listening paper marked in the first week, the two highest-cost error classes named, and the remaining sessions split between those and text-type conventions, which pay back fastest. New grammar is not introduced at this stage. Expect honest framing rather than a promise, because nobody can commit to a grade in eight weeks or in eighty.

Send one marked script and we will tell you what it is costing

If you are looking for an IB DP German B home tutor in Abu Dhabi, the fastest useful step is to send a single marked Paper 1 attempt and book the free trial lesson, which needs no card and carries no obligation. The trial produces a timed script and a listening score rather than a conversation about aspirations, and you keep the error-class list afterwards either way. From there the work is specific: two or three named classes, blocks of three to six sessions, and a cold retest that says whether it held. Lessons run online, one-to-one, on Gulf Standard Time.
