IB Home Tutor in Tilal City: How the Match Is Made and Checked

Searching for an IB home tutor in Tilal City runs into a hard fact quickly: very few Diploma specialists will drive out along the Sharjah–Dhaid corridor for a single hour. So this page is about the process instead — how a tutor match should actually be made, what a tutor profile ought to state, how to verify it, and how to tell after four sessions whether it worked. Lessons are taught one-to-one over live video.

  • A match built on programme, level and a named loss in marked work
  • What a tutor profile should state, and what it should never claim
  • A trial session with a stated purpose rather than a sales call
  • Sessions in Gulf Standard Time, held weekly, with written session notes

IB & IGCSE in Tilal City

When nobody is driving out here, the process matters more

Tilal City sits along the Sharjah–Dhaid corridor, past University City and well beyond the Muwaileh school cluster. For most daily purposes that distance is manageable. For a weekly one-hour tutoring visit it is close to decisive: a tutor making that round trip is giving up an hour of travel to sell one hour of teaching, and either the rate reflects it or the arrangement quietly collapses after a month.

That removes the usual question. A family in Al Taawun can at least weigh local candidates against online ones. A family in Tilal City is mostly choosing between an online specialist and nobody, which sounds bleak and is actually clarifying — because it shifts the whole question from where the tutor sits to whether the arrangement is any good.

Which is a question almost nobody asks properly. Most tutoring is bought on a rate and a reassuring conversation, and then runs for a term on goodwill, with nobody having defined what it was supposed to change or when that would be visible. The result is a parent six weeks in, vaguely dissatisfied, with no way to say whether the problem is the tutor, the plan or the student.

So this page is about mechanism. How a match should be made, from what evidence. What a tutor profile should state and what should be treated as a warning sign. What a trial session is for, and what a parent should take away from it. What a session note should contain. How to read progress after four sessions. And how to change a tutor without it being a confrontation.

The Diploma raises the stakes on all of this because its specialists are scarce. International Baccalaureate students made up 7 per cent of Dubai's private-school population in 2024-25, against 37 per cent on UK curricula, and Sharjah's IB provision is concentrated in a small number of continuum schools. A badly made match is not just a waste of money here; it is a waste of a scarce person's availability, and the replacement may not be free until next term.

It is also a short list of things to agree, not a project. Four facts to assemble, three documents to ask for, two review dates to fix. Half an hour of work before the first invoice, and it is the half hour that decides whether the next twenty hours are worth anything.

Everything on this page applies to any provider, including this one. A page that teaches you how to evaluate tutoring is making a bet that it survives being evaluated, which is a more useful offer to a Tilal City parent than a list of adjectives about quality.

On delivery: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. In-home tutoring is offered only in India, and there is no UAE office or centre. Tilal City students are taught one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, with the draft or past paper on a shared screen.

At a glance

  • A weekly in-home hour in Tilal City costs a tutor an hour of travel
  • Which makes the quality of the arrangement the only real variable
  • A match is made from programme, level and a named loss in marked work
  • Diploma specialists are scarce, so a bad match wastes a scarce slot
  • Tilal City students are taught over live video, not at a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The programmes behind this search, with what each one requires a tutor to have actually done rather than studied. That distinction is the whole of a good match.

DPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Each subject carries an Internal Assessment marked against lettered criteria added separately. A tutor match for the Diploma therefore requires someone who has worked from those descriptors, not someone who has studied the subject to a higher level — those are different qualifications and only one of them diagnoses a mid-band Internal Assessment.

UAE schools sit the May session. No Diploma exam or results date appears on this page, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and a date a family plans around has to be right; take every one from your school's IB coordinator. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies run alongside the Diploma in UAE private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum.

MYPAges 11–16 · Years 7–11

Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups assessed against four criteria per subject, scored 0–8 and converted to a 1–7 grade. Matching here needs someone who can name the four criteria for the subject in question, because the standard failure is a capable student sitting at a 4 with correct work and a thin justification or communication criterion. A general subject tutor will improve the content and leave the grade where it was.

For families out along the Dhaid corridor, the Middle Years Programme years are when an arrangement has to be built to last, because starting again locally in Year 11 is not realistic. An online slot established in Year 8 survives a house move, a school change and a holiday, which in this part of the emirate is worth more than it would be closer in.

CPAges 16–19 · Years 12–13

DP courses and partial routes

Not every student in an IB school takes the full Diploma. Some take DP courses rather than the full certificate, with subject exams and Internal Assessments but no Extended Essay or Theory of Knowledge requirement. The match is simpler and the plan should be correspondingly narrower — importing a full-Diploma timeline onto a courses candidate buys hours that have nothing to do.

Establishing which route a student is on is a question for the IB coordinator and it should happen before any tutoring is agreed. It changes the number of components in play, the internal deadline calendar, and whether core-component support is relevant at all, and it is the single most common thing a tutoring enquiry fails to establish.

PYPAges 3–12 · Foundation to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

Inquiry-led with no external examinations, so it rarely generates tutoring searches. Where it matters in a community like this one is continuity: a family choosing a continuum school now is choosing which assessment model their child meets at 11 and 16, and in a location where school options are a drive rather than a walk, that decision is harder to revisit later.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6 per cent. Provision across the region is expanding rather than static, so a school decision made for a young child is worth revisiting as new campuses open nearer.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Diploma subjects requested from this part of Sharjah, each with the thing a matched tutor should be able to say unprompted. If they cannot, the match has not been made on the right evidence.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Should be able to describe how Higher Level Paper 3 differs from Papers 1 and 2 before any rate is discussed, and to name what the exploration's personal engagement criterion actually asks for. Those two answers separate a mathematician from a Diploma mathematics teacher.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Should know that the exploration rewards genuinely collected data and that the decision is made in week one. A tutor who treats this route as the easier one has not taught it; the modelling questions are unfamiliar territory for students arriving from a British curriculum.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Should name the Internal Assessment criteria and explain why a tidy textbook result earns nothing by itself. Should also be able to say what a weak research question looks like, since that is the failure that cannot be fixed after the fact.

Physics

HL and SL

Should know the Internal Assessment credits design and uncertainty handling rather than accuracy, and should be able to describe how a Higher Level extended response is structured — principle first, then calculation. Both are checkable claims in one conversation.

Biology

HL and SL

Should distinguish what outline, describe, explain, distinguish and discuss each expect, and should mention data questions on unfamiliar experiments as trainable. A tutor who attributes a plateau to effort rather than command terms has not marked Biology.

Economics

HL and SL

Should say that diagram marks are awarded piece by piece and that the commentary article choice determines the ceiling. If they talk about economic theory and not about the judgement sentence, they are teaching the subject rather than the assessment.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Should separate the Individual Oral from Paper 1 unseen analysis as different jobs, and should be able to describe the move from summary to analysis of construction. Higher Level's essay is assessed on sustained argument rather than coverage.

Business Management

HL and SL

Should mention that the Internal Assessment needs real organisational data and that sourcing it is the task that stalls students for weeks. Should also know that application to the named organisation is what separates bands in the written papers.

Arabic and the mandatory UAE subjects

Language A, language acquisition and ab initio

Should ask which stream the student is on before anything else, because separate classes exist for Arab and non-Arab students and material does not transfer between them. A tutor who offers generic Arabic material has not worked in a UAE school.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core components

Should ask for the school supervisor's checkpoint dates first, and should mention the reflection record unprompted. Those marks are the most commonly lost in the Diploma and the easiest to secure, purely through keeping the record rather than reconstructing it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements, all over live video for UAE students. Each is defined by what it commits to rather than by how many hours it contains.

Weekly slot with written notes

One subject at a named level, one hour weekly, with a short written note after each session saying what was covered and what comes next. The note is the part that makes the arrangement reviewable, and it is the part most tutoring does not provide.

  • Same tutor weekly, slot held rather than renegotiated
  • A note after each session naming the next step
  • The marking document open on screen in the session
  • Reviewed at the next school assessment

Four-session diagnostic

A deliberately short commitment with one named objective, for a family that does not want to buy a term on trust. Four sessions is enough for a named loss to start moving and short enough that a mismatch costs little.

  • One objective, written down before session one
  • Diagnosed from marked work, not from a conversation
  • A written summary at the end you can take to the school
  • No obligation to continue

Core components support

Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay feedback cycles against the published criteria, mapped to the school supervisor's checkpoints. The scarcest support to find anywhere, and the one worth booking a term ahead from a location like this.

  • Supervisor checkpoint dates collected first
  • Reflection record kept from week one, not reconstructed
  • Feedback on the student's own draft only
  • Ends at submission

01

What a match should actually be made from

A tutoring match is usually made from three things: the subject, the year group, and whether a slot is free. That is enough to produce a plausible arrangement and not enough to produce a useful one.

The evidence that makes a match worth something is narrower. First, the programme and the level — Higher and Standard Level are different courses with different papers and, in some subjects, different Internal Assessment expectations, so matching on "Biology" is matching on half the information. Second, the specific loss visible in a piece of marked work: a criterion left empty, command terms answered identically, a research question too broad to answer.

Third, and most often skipped, the position in the calendar. A student with an Internal Assessment already submitted needs a different tutor plan from one still choosing a research question, because the first has a banked mark and the second has a live one. A match made without asking about internal deadlines will put the hours in the wrong place.

From a location like Tilal City there is a fourth: the time the session can actually run. A household commuting in from the Dhaid corridor is settled later than one in Muwaileh, and a tutor matched to a 5pm slot that nobody can keep is not matched at all. The slot has to be real before the person is chosen.

Those four facts take one email and twenty minutes with a marked paper to assemble. A provider who asks for all four before proposing a tutor is doing the job. One who asks for the subject and the year group is allocating, not matching.

What a tutor profile should say, and what should worry you

  • A useful profile names the programme, level and components worked on
  • Unevidenced examiner status: a warning, not a credential
  • Regulator approval: not something tutoring platforms hold
  • Star ratings without countable attributable reviews: a policy risk and a trust failure
  • Any statistic without n, date and method: leave it out

Profiles in this market are written to impress rather than to inform, and the difference is easy to spot once you know what a useful one contains.

A useful profile names the programme and level taught, the components the tutor has worked on, and the kind of student they are effective with. "IB Diploma Chemistry Higher Level; Internal Assessment feedback and Paper 2 extended response; strongest with students who know the content and lose marks on reasoning" tells a parent something. "Experienced IB tutor, passionate about science" does not.

Four claims should be read as warnings rather than credentials. Examiner status, where current status cannot be evidenced — and it should never be used to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content, because no legitimate tutor has that. Regulator approval, because SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB and Cambridge do not accredit tutoring platforms in that way; a KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific licence issued to training institutes with premises in Dubai.

Third, star ratings and review counts that are not backed by real, countable, attributable reviews. Competitors in this market publish contradictory figures on the same page, and one shows a five-star average from twenty reviews against a separate claim about how many students it has taught. Fourth, any statistic without a sample size, a date and a method: satisfaction percentages, median tutor scores, proportions of students achieving a grade.

For completeness about us: IB Gram holds no regulator approval, accreditation, licence or partnership with any UAE authority or examination board, operates no office, centre or branch in the UAE, and publishes no ratings or outcome statistics it cannot evidence. Students we support attend schools across Sharjah; that is the whole of the relationship.

03

What a trial session is for

  • Send the marked work before the trial, not after
  • The hour should be spent on real work, not on an interview
  • Judge it on a named loss and a four-session plan
  • Any condition attached to a free trial belongs on the same screen
  • Rapport is necessary; diagnosis is what makes the hour worth paying for

A free trial lesson is widely offered and widely misunderstood. Most families treat it as a chance for the child to meet the tutor and see whether they get on, which is worth something but is not the point.

The point is to test the diagnosis. Before the session, send the marked work and name the subject and level. During the session, the tutor should work on something real rather than conduct an interview. Afterwards, the test is whether they can say: here is the specific thing costing marks, here is what the next four sessions will do about it, and here is how you will see it in the next school assessment.

A tutor who cannot do that after an hour with marked work in front of them will not be able to do it after eight, and the trial has just saved a term's fees. A tutor who can has told you what you are buying, which converts the rate question from a guess into a judgement.

Two things a trial should not be. It should not require a card or carry a condition that is not stated on the same screen — if a trial is described as free, the length, the eligibility and any commitment attached to it belong in the same sentence. And it should not be a sales call with a teaching segment attached; the hour should be spent on the work.

Rapport matters, just less than people think and in a specific way: a student who dreads the session will not do the work between sessions, which halves the value of the hour. So rapport is a necessary condition and diagnosis is the sufficient one, and a trial should be judged on both in that order.

WHAT A TRIAL SESSION SHOULD PRODUCE
What to send or askWhat a good trial gives backWhat a weak trial gives backWhat it tells you
Marked work, sent beforehandA named behaviour costing marksA comment about confidenceWhether a diagnosis is possible

What should arrive after each session

This is the mechanism that makes an arrangement reviewable, and its absence is why so many tutoring relationships run for months with nobody able to say whether they are working.

A session note does not need to be long. Four lines is enough: what was covered, what the student did well, what is still wrong, and what they should do before the next session. The last two are the ones that matter, because they are the only parts a parent can check against the next piece of marked work.

What a note should not be is a summary of topics touched. "Worked on organic chemistry, good progress" is unfalsifiable and tells a parent nothing they can act on. "Still naming products without the functional group; practise the five conditions table before Tuesday" is checkable by anyone, including a parent who has never studied chemistry.

From a location like Tilal City the notes carry extra weight, because you are not going to bump into the tutor in the hallway or overhear the session from the kitchen in the same way. The written record is the visibility, and it should be part of the arrangement rather than something requested after a month of unease.

Over four sessions the notes should also start to repeat in a useful way: the same named loss, narrowing. If the notes name a different problem every week, nobody has made a diagnosis, and that is worth raising at session four rather than at the end of term.

Reading progress at four sessions and at eight

  • Four sessions: imperfect attempts at the right thing
  • Eight sessions: a school assessment showing the same loss reduced
  • Measure the named loss, not the total mark
  • Three explanations for no movement — separate them before deciding
  • Do not extend on hope; the replacement may take a term to find

Progress in tutoring is read badly because it is read from feeling. The session was good, the child seemed happier, the tutor is nice — none of which predicts a grade.

At four sessions, the question is narrow: has the named loss started to appear less? Not has the grade moved, which is too slow a measure, but has the specific behaviour changed in the work. A student who was writing answers without method on multi-mark questions should be showing method, imperfectly. A student whose evaluation criterion was empty should be attempting evaluation, badly. Imperfect attempts at the right thing are the four-session signal.

At eight sessions, a school assessment should show it. This is where the review belongs, because school marks are the only measure that counts and the only one neither you nor the tutor controls. Compare the marked work against the piece you started from, looking for the same loss specifically rather than at the total.

If the loss has not moved at eight sessions, there are three explanations and they need separating. The plan was aimed at the wrong thing — fixable by re-diagnosing. The student is not working between sessions — fixable by changing what the sessions ask for. Or the match is wrong, which is common, says nothing about either party, and should be resolved by changing the tutor rather than by waiting.

The thing not to do is extend on hope. The most expensive pattern in this market is a term of pleasant sessions while the same marks keep disappearing, and from a location where the replacement tutor may not be free until next term, catching it at eight sessions rather than at twenty matters more than usual.

06

Changing a tutor without a confrontation

  • Ask how a tutor change works before you book, not after
  • Frame the change around the named loss, not the person
  • Carry the session notes and error log to the replacement
  • A mismatch is normal in a scarce specialism
  • Change in October is cheap; change in April may mean waiting

Mismatches are normal. A student and a teacher can both be good and still not work together, and in a scarce specialism the odds of the first allocation being ideal are not high. The problem is that families treat a change as an accusation and therefore delay it.

The fix is to agree the mechanism before it is needed. At the point of booking, ask one question: how does a tutor change work, and what does it cost? A reasonable answer is that it happens on request, without justification, and the slot is kept. An answer that involves a complaints process, a notice period or a fee is telling you something about how long you will be staying with a bad match.

When a change is needed, the useful framing is the named loss rather than the person. "The method-marks problem hasn't moved in eight sessions and we'd like to try a different approach" is a complete and honest reason, and it also gives the next tutor the brief. There is no need to critique anyone's teaching.

Carry the error log across. The accumulated record of what has been tried — which is what the session notes become — is genuinely valuable to a replacement and saves two sessions of rediscovery. A provider who does not hand that over is losing your money on your behalf.

And do it with the calendar in mind. A change in October is cheap. A change in April, in a thin specialism, may mean waiting, which is exactly why the eight-session review exists and why ignoring it costs more than the sessions themselves.

07

The coursework boundary and the data a tutor holds

  • Criteria explained and the student's own draft critiqued: legitimate
  • Writing, completing or supplying submitted text: never, at any price
  • Ask for comments rather than edits inside the document
  • Ask what personal data is held, why, for how long, and how to delete it
  • A lead form should not collect a child's school, grades and photo without a stated purpose

Two things an arrangement should settle in writing at the start, because both are easier to agree before there is any pressure.

The coursework boundary first. A tutor may explain the published criteria by letter, question an argument, read the student's own draft and name where it falls short of the descriptors, and teach the skill the task requires. A tutor may not write submitted text, redraft to completion, or supply model answers to work from. IB rules treat submitted work that is not the candidate's own as malpractice, and the consequence falls on the candidate's diploma rather than on the tutor or the platform. One operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright at a published price.

A practical safeguard that costs nothing: ask for feedback as spoken comments or margin notes rather than as edits inside the document. It removes the ambiguity entirely, for the student's protection as much as anyone's, and a tutor who objects to it is telling you something.

Second, the data. Tutoring involves a provider holding information about a minor — name, school, year group, marked work, sometimes recorded sessions. A family is entitled to know what is collected, why, how long it is kept and how to have it deleted, and the UAE's Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection sits behind that expectation. A privacy policy should be linked from any page that collects a lead form, and a form should not be collecting a child's school, grades and photograph without a stated purpose.

Neither of these is a formality in practice. The coursework boundary protects a qualification the student has spent two years on, and the data question protects a child whose school, marks and image are being handed to a commercial service by a parent who assumed it was fine.

08

The permit, the regulator and honest scarcity

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid two years — ask whether it is held
  • No penalty schedule is published, so quoted fine figures are unverified
  • SPEA approves Sharjah fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods
  • Diploma specialisms are thin regionally and availability is seasonal
  • IB Gram holds no regulator approval and operates no UAE office or centre

Three closing pieces of context, all of which a Tilal City family should have before agreeing anything.

The permit. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Applications go through MoHRE's own private tutor licensing service. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no schedule of amounts published, so treat any figure quoted to you as unverified. Because the permit is free, there is no innocent reason for a working tutor to be without it.

The regulator. Sharjah's private schools fall under the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which regulates private education in the emirate, and Sharjah's authority approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods — a wider remit than inspection alone. Naming it here describes the system your child studies inside and implies nothing about any tutoring provider, including this one.

Scarcity. Diploma specialists are a thin pool regionally, not just locally: Higher Level sciences, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, Economics with proper evaluation coaching, and Theory of Knowledge support are the narrowest. Availability is seasonal as well, and the eight weeks before the main window are the busiest hours in the market.

Which is why, from a community along this corridor, the honest advice is to establish the arrangement early and review it on schedule. The eight-session review is not bureaucracy; it is what stops a mismatch from consuming a term you cannot get back and a slot you may not be able to replace.

Where we tutor

Tilal City and the corridor it sits on

Distances here are the point, so each note says what the journey actually does to a weekly arrangement.

Tilal City

A mixed-use development along the Sharjah–Dhaid corridor with villa and plot housing, beyond the main school cluster. Students travel in rather than out, and a tutor making the reverse trip spends roughly an hour on the road for one teaching hour.

Sharjah Garden City

Further inland on the same corridor, with an even smaller pool of tutors willing to travel. The two communities share the same practical conclusion about how support has to be delivered.

Aljada

Closer in, master-planned and still filling, with school provision arriving in stages. Many Tilal City students pass through on the commute to the Muwaileh campuses.

Al Zahia

Villas and townhouses west of Muwaileh, with established routes into the campuses. Households there are settled around 5.30pm; Tilal City households are typically later.

Muwaileh

The main school cluster and the dismissal congestion along the Maliha Road corridor, which the Tilal City commute runs straight into twice a day.

University City

Sharjah's higher-education cluster, passed on the way in. A real source of budget content tutors, none of whom will reliably drive out to Tilal City for a single hour.

Al Qasimia and the lagoon districts

Central and coastal Sharjah, where most of the emirate's established schools and tutors are. Far enough from Tilal City that proximity stops being a usable criterion at all.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Assemble the four facts

Programme and level from the IB coordinator, the school's internal deadline calendar, the named loss from a marked piece of work, and the session time your week can genuinely sustain from a Dhaid-corridor commute. A provider who asks for all four is matching; one who asks for the subject is allocating.

  2. 02

Read the profile for what it states

Programme, level, components worked on, and the kind of student the tutor is effective with. Treat unevidenced examiner status, regulator approval, star ratings and statistics without a sample and a date as warnings rather than as credentials.

  3. 03

Use the trial to test diagnosis

Send the marked work beforehand. Judge the hour on whether the tutor named the specific loss, said what the next four sessions would do, and explained how you would see it in the next school assessment. Rapport is necessary; this is what makes the hour worth paying for.

  4. 04

Agree the notes, the review and the exit

A four-line note after each session, a review at the next school assessment, and a stated process for changing tutors on request without justification. All three before the first invoice, because all three are harder to ask for later.

  5. 05

Review at four and at eight

At four sessions, look for imperfect attempts at the right thing. At eight, look for the named loss reduced in a school assessment. If it has not moved, separate the three explanations — wrong plan, no work between sessions, or wrong match — and act rather than extend.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The match is made from four facts

Programme and level, the named loss in marked work, the position in the school's internal calendar, and a session time that actually exists. Matching on subject and year group produces a plausible arrangement rather than a useful one.

Session notes are part of the arrangement

Four lines after each session: covered, went well, still wrong, do before next time. The third and fourth lines are the only ones a parent can check, and from a location like this the written record is the visibility.

The review points are fixed in advance

Four sessions for imperfect attempts at the right thing, eight for a school assessment showing the loss reduced. Fixing them before the first invoice is what prevents a term of pleasant sessions while the same marks disappear.

Changing tutors is a mechanism, not a complaint

On request, without justification, with the session notes and error log carried across. In a scarce specialism a mismatch is likely rather than surprising, and the cost of delay rises sharply as the exam window approaches.

No claims that cannot be evidenced

No regulator approval, no examiner status we cannot show, no star ratings, no guaranteed grades, no satisfaction percentages. Competitors in this market publish contradictory review counts on the same page; every figure here carries its source and the month it was read.

Delivery and data stated plainly

Tilal City students are taught one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE, operates no UAE office, and will tell you what personal data is held about your child, why, and how to have it deleted.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Tilal City: your questions answered

Will any IB tutor actually travel to Tilal City for a weekly session?+

Very few, and it is worth being clear why rather than dressing it up. Tilal City sits along the Sharjah–Dhaid corridor beyond the main school cluster, so a tutor making the round trip gives up roughly an hour of travel to sell one teaching hour. Either the rate carries that cost or the arrangement collapses after a month of rescheduling. For Diploma specialists, who are a thin pool regionally, it almost never happens. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE in any case; lessons are over live video.

What information should a tutoring service ask for before proposing a tutor?+

Four things. The programme and level, because Higher and Standard Level are different courses. The specific loss visible in a marked piece of work. Where you are in the school's internal deadline calendar, since a submitted Internal Assessment is a banked mark and the hours belong elsewhere. And a session time your week can genuinely sustain. A provider asking only for the subject and year group is allocating a tutor rather than matching one.

What should a tutor profile tell me, and what should make me cautious?+

It should name the programme, the level, the components the tutor has actually worked on, and the kind of student they are effective with. Treat four things as warnings: examiner status that cannot be evidenced, regulator approval — SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry, the IB and Cambridge do not accredit tutoring platforms that way — star ratings not backed by countable attributable reviews, and any statistic published without a sample size, a date and a method.

What should I be looking for in a free trial lesson?+

A diagnosis, not a conversation. Send the marked work beforehand and judge the hour on three things: did the tutor name the specific behaviour costing marks, did they say what the next four sessions would do about it, and did they explain how you would see the change in the next school assessment? A tutor who cannot do that with marked work in front of them after an hour will not manage it after eight. Any condition attached to a free trial should be stated on the same screen.

What should arrive after each tutoring session?+

Four lines: what was covered, what went well, what is still wrong, and what the student should do before next time. The last two are the only ones you can check. "Worked on organic chemistry, good progress" is unfalsifiable; "still naming products without the functional group, practise the conditions table before Tuesday" is checkable by a parent who never studied chemistry. Across four notes the same loss should keep appearing and narrowing.

At what point should a Tilal City family expect visible progress?+

At four sessions, look for imperfect attempts at the right thing — method being shown badly rather than not at all, evaluation attempted rather than absent. At eight, look for the named loss reduced in a real school assessment, because school marks are the only measure neither you nor the tutor controls. Compare against the piece you started from, looking at that specific loss rather than at the total. A grade is too slow a measure to steer by.

What do I do if the tutoring is not working after eight sessions?+

Separate three explanations before deciding. The plan may be aimed at the wrong thing, which is fixed by re-diagnosing from marked work. The student may not be working between sessions, which is fixed by changing what the sessions ask for. Or the match is wrong, which is common in a scarce specialism and says nothing about either party. Do not extend on hope — from this part of Sharjah the replacement specialist may not be free until next term.

How should I raise changing a tutor without it becoming awkward?+

Agree the mechanism when you book: how does a change work and what does it cost? A reasonable answer is on request, without justification, with the slot kept. When the time comes, frame it around the named loss rather than the person — "the method-marks problem hasn't moved in eight sessions and we'd like a different approach" is complete and honest. Ask for the session notes and error log to be carried across, which saves the replacement two sessions of rediscovery.

Why does matching on Higher or Standard Level matter so much?+

Because they are different courses. The papers differ, the content depth differs, and in several subjects the Internal Assessment expectations differ too — Higher Level Mathematics Analysis and Approaches carries Paper 3, an extended investigation with no Standard Level equivalent. A tutor matched on "Mathematics" may be learning your child's level during the first paid sessions, which is a cost you are carrying rather than a service you are buying.

What should I ask about the data a tutoring service holds on my child?+

What is collected, why, how long it is kept, who can see it, and how to have it deleted. Tutoring involves a provider holding information about a minor — name, school, year group, marked work, sometimes recorded sessions — and the UAE's Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection sits behind the expectation that this is stated. A lead form should not be asking for a child's school, grades and photograph without a stated purpose, and a privacy link should be on the page.

Where is the line on Internal Assessment and Extended Essay help?+

A tutor may explain the published criteria by letter, question the argument, read the student's own draft and name where it falls short, and teach the skill the task needs. A tutor may not write submitted text, redraft to completion or supply model answers. IB rules treat submitted work that is not the candidate's own as malpractice and the consequence lands on the candidate's diploma. A practical safeguard that costs nothing: ask for feedback as comments rather than as edits inside the document.

Does a tutor teaching my child from outside the UAE need the MoHRE permit?+

The permit regime applies to private tutoring in the UAE and it is a fair question to ask of anyone teaching your child, wherever they sit. It was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers school and government-sector teachers, private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and students aged 15 to 18. Because it is free, a tutor working with UAE families has no cost reason not to hold one, which is why asking is worthwhile.

What time can sessions realistically start from Tilal City?+

Later than from the communities closer in. Students here travel to the Muwaileh and University City campuses, and the return journey runs through the Maliha Road dismissal congestion, so a household is often not settled before six o'clock and sometimes later with children at two schools. Slots are booked in Gulf Standard Time and held weekly, with later slots best used for technique work and weekend mornings for coursework blocks. Most families move to a post-Iftar time during Ramadan.

Which IB specialisms should I book earliest from here?+

Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay support first, because they are the scarcest and the most seasonal — plan a term ahead. Then Higher Level sciences, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, and Economics with proper diagram and evaluation coaching. The eight weeks before the main window are the busiest hours in this market, so a slot held from autumn is a slot you keep. If a specialist is not free, expect to be told plainly rather than offered a general subject tutor.

Agree the mechanism, then pick the person

If you are looking for an IB home tutor in Tilal City, the realistic choice is an online specialist rather than a local visit, which makes the quality of the arrangement the only variable worth negotiating. Assemble the four facts — programme and level, the named loss, your position in the school's internal calendar, a session time that survives the commute — then agree the session notes, the review points and the tutor-change process before the first invoice. Then take a free trial and judge it on the diagnosis.
