What a 0478 tutor should be able to show you after four weeks

Most families in Sharjah hire a Computer Science tutor on a feeling. The Year 11 report said "inconsistent", the mock came back at a 5, and something has to change before the series. Four weeks later the same parents cannot say whether anything has changed. The lessons happened, the student says they were useful, and the next mock is months away. That gap is what this page is built to close. A 0478 tutor who is working properly leaves a paper trail, and the paper trail is readable by someone who has never written a line of Python.

The trail has four parts. A marked past-paper script carrying the mark scheme's own wording in the margin. A running error log that names the topic and the command word rather than the question number. A list of the specific things the student could not do in week one, with dates against the ones that have since been cleared. And a stated target for the next sitting that is a number rather than an adverb. If none of that exists by the fourth lesson, the money is buying company instead of teaching.

0478 is easier to audit this way than most subjects, because the grade is assembled from two written papers and nothing else. There is no portfolio, no separate practical examination and no split into Core and Extended tiers: every candidate sits the same two papers, each carrying 75 marks and half the grade. A marked script is therefore not a proxy for progress. It is the same instrument the examiner will use. Confirm the component structure for your child's specific series on cambridgeinternational.org, since Cambridge revises syllabuses on a published cycle and the version in a second-hand revision guide may not be the one being sat.

Sharjah adds one practical constraint worth naming early. SPEA, the Sharjah Private Education Authority, regulates private schools in the emirate, and a large share of Sharjah households send children across the border to Dubai schools, driving out from Al Nahda, Al Majaz or Al Taawun and queueing back along Al Ittihad Road in the evening. A tutor who has to find parking in Al Qasimia at 16:30 cannot realistically begin before 17:30. Running the lesson over video takes the drive out of the arithmetic and returns that hour to the student.

IB Gram does not sell home visits anywhere in the UAE: that is a service offered only in India, and a Sharjah family is matched with a 0478 specialist for online IGCSE Computer Science tuition in Sharjah instead. The practical effect is that the pool stops being whoever teaches Computer Science within a twenty-minute radius of Al Khan. It becomes whoever can mark a Paper 2 script properly, wherever that person lives, at an hour that fits a Sharjah school day.

At a glance

  • Two written papers, 75 marks each, half the grade apiece
  • No coursework, no separate practical exam and no Core or Extended tiering in 0478
  • Pseudocode is examined, so coding fluently in Python alone is not enough
  • Marked scripts and a dated error log come back to you after every paper
  • Sessions run online between roughly 16:00 and 21:00 Gulf Standard Time
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

0478 sits inside a Cambridge pathway that most Sharjah schools run from Year 7 through to Year 13. Knowing which rung your child is on changes what a weekly hour should be spent on, because a Year 9 student is still building notation habits while a Year 11 student is usually losing marks on content they already know.

LSECAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary Computing

The pre-IGCSE stage, where students meet selection, iteration, simple data types and the idea that a computer stores everything as binary. Schools treat it with very different levels of seriousness: some run it as a timetabled subject with written assessment, others fold it into a general ICT or digital-literacy slot. The difference shows up immediately in Year 10, because a student who has never written a condition inside a loop starts 0478 roughly a term behind one who has.

Several Sharjah schools in Muwaileh and Al Zahia run computing as a carousel subject in Years 7 and 8, rotating with design technology. Work out from your child's timetable how many taught hours of computing they actually had before Year 10, because that number predicts the first term of 0478 far better than the end-of-year grade does.

0478Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science

The syllabus this page is about. Ten topic areas split across two written papers: computer systems in Paper 1, and algorithms, programming, databases and Boolean logic in Paper 2. Each paper runs 1 hour 45 minutes and carries 75 marks, so the two halves of the course cannot be traded off against each other. A student who is strong on hardware and weak on trace tables loses a clean half of the available marks, and no amount of extra theory revision recovers them.

Sharjah centres sit 0478 in the standard Cambridge series, and the entry is made by the school rather than by you. Ask the examinations officer in writing which series your child is entered for and which timetable zone the centre belongs to, because the Cambridge IGCSE 0478 entry deadline falls months ahead of the exam and a zone mix-up is the one administrative error Cambridge will not absorb.

0984Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE (9-1) Computer Science

The same subject content reported on the 9 to 1 grade scale rather than A* to G. Schools choose between the two codes for reporting and comparability reasons, not because the course is different, and the teaching, the papers and the revision are effectively interchangeable. Parents hit this when a tutor advertises 0478 and the school's reports show 0984, or when a past paper downloaded from the wrong code's folder uses an unfamiliar grade boundary table.

If your child's Sharjah school reports Computer Science as a 7 or an 8 rather than an A or a B, the entry is almost certainly 0984. The teaching plan does not change, but the conversation about a target grade does: a 6 under 9 to 1 is not the same thing as a C, and translating between the two scales by eye is where a lot of Sharjah parents mis-set expectations.

Cambridge International AS & A Level Computer Science

The continuation route, and the reason a weak 0478 grade matters beyond Year 11. 9618 assumes fluency in the things 0478 only introduces: data representation, abstraction, file handling and structured programming in a chosen language. A student who scraped through 0478 by memorising theory and avoiding the programming questions tends to meet a wall in the first term of AS, because the written paper there assumes code can be read as well as recalled.

Sharjah's A-Level provision in Computer Science is thinner than Dubai's, and some families end up choosing between a school that offers 9618 and one that offers a stronger overall sixth form. Fixing the Paper 2 weakness during Year 11 keeps that option open rather than closing it quietly, which is a better reason to work on algorithms now than the Year 11 grade by itself.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

0478 is published as ten numbered topic areas, and the numbering is useful to a parent because it is the vocabulary a tutor should be using in the error log. Below is what each one actually assesses and where Sharjah students most often lose marks inside it, which is a more honest map of the course than a list of lesson titles.

1.1 Data representation

Paper 1

Binary, hexadecimal, two's complement, character sets, sound and image representation, and file compression. Marks go missing on the conversion arithmetic under time pressure and on explaining why a system uses hex rather than binary, which is an explanation question dressed as a conversion question.

1.2 Data transmission

Paper 1

Packet structure, serial and parallel transmission, simplex and duplex, USB, and error-checking methods including parity, checksum, echo check and check digit. Students who have memorised the list still lose marks because the question asks which method catches which type of error, not what the methods are called.

1.3 Hardware

Paper 1

The CPU, the fetch-decode-execute cycle, registers, embedded systems, input and output devices, and the full range of storage and virtual memory. The reliable loss here is describing a device instead of explaining why it suits a stated scenario, which is the difference between two marks and five.

1.4 Software

Paper 1

System and application software, operating systems, interrupts, high and low-level languages, compilers, interpreters and assemblers. The compiler-versus-interpreter comparison appears in some form in most series, and answers that describe both without ever comparing them score about half of what is available.

1.5 The internet and its uses

Paper 1

URLs, HTTP and HTTPS, browsers, DNS, cookies, digital currency and blockchain, plus cyber-security threats and the countermeasures for each. The security section rewards precision: naming a threat is one mark, explaining the mechanism and the specific countermeasure is where the rest sit.

1.6 Automated and emerging technologies

Paper 1

Sensors and control systems, robotics, and artificial intelligence including machine learning. Short, often underestimated, and a frequent source of cheap marks for a student who can describe a feedback loop with a named sensor and a named actuator rather than in general terms.

2.1 Algorithm design and problem-solving

Paper 2

Decomposition, flowcharts, structure diagrams, pseudocode, trace tables, validation and verification, and test data selection. Trace tables are the single most diagnostic question type on the paper: a student who cannot complete one cannot reliably debug, and the marks reflect that.

2.2 Programming

Paper 2

Variables, constants, data types, the three control structures, string handling, arrays, procedures, functions and file handling, written in pseudocode or a permitted language. The most common failure is syntactically valid code that answers a slightly different question from the one asked.

2.3 Databases

Paper 2

Single-table databases, field types, primary keys, and SQL using SELECT, FROM, WHERE, ORDER BY, SUM and COUNT. A small topic with a predictable question, routinely dropped because it sits at the end of the syllabus and gets taught in the week before study leave.

2.4 Boolean logic

Paper 2

Logic gates, logic circuits from a written scenario, truth tables and logic expressions. Mechanical and learnable, and therefore the cheapest marks on Paper 2 to secure: Boolean logic in 0478 rewards a student who has drawn thirty circuits far more than one who understands the theory abstractly.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Sharjah families use 0478 support, and all three run as one-to-one lessons over live video. The right one depends on how far away the series is and whether the problem is content the student has never met or content they have met and cannot reproduce under timed conditions.

Weekly one-to-one through Year 10 and Year 11

A fixed hour each week, following the school's own order of teaching rather than a parallel syllabus. The tutor sees the exercise book and the last class test, works the current topic to the standard the paper asks for, and sets a short timed task for the following week. Progress is recorded in a dated error log that stays with the student across the two years, which is what makes a Year 11 conversation about target grades evidence-based rather than hopeful.

  • Follows the school scheme of work, topic by topic
  • One short timed task set and marked between sessions
  • A dated error log carried forward across both years
  • Half-term summary naming what has cleared and what has not

Paper-by-paper marking block before a series

A compressed arrangement for the ten to fourteen weeks before the exams, built around Cambridge IGCSE 0478 past paper marking rather than teaching. The student sits a full paper under timed conditions between sessions, and the hour is spent on the script: what the mark scheme awarded, what it did not, and why. Families use this when the content is broadly there and the marks are not, which is the most common shape of an exam-year problem.

  • One full past paper sat under timed conditions per cycle
  • Script marked against the published Cambridge mark scheme
  • Session spent on the losses, not on re-teaching secure topics
  • A running mark record so movement is visible, not felt

Pseudocode and trace-table clinic

A short, targeted block for the Paper 2 problem that most 0478 students have: they can write working code in Python and still cannot read an unfamiliar algorithm. The work is 0478 pseudocode help in the narrow sense, plus 0478 trace table practice until completing one is mechanical. This is the single highest-yield intervention on the paper for a student who codes but does not score.

  • Cambridge pseudocode conventions treated as their own language
  • Trace tables drilled until they are completed without hesitation
  • Standard algorithms read, dry-run and amended rather than written from scratch
  • Boolean logic and SQL folded in as the cheap marks they are

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sharjah

01

The evidence a 0478 tutor should produce, week by week

Ask for the evidence before you ask for the price. A tutor who cannot describe what will exist on paper after four lessons is describing an intention, not a method, and intention is what every page in this search result already sells. The table below is the standard we hold a 0478 match to in Sharjah, and it is deliberately written so that you can check it without understanding the subject.

The first lesson should be spent partly on diagnosis. Not a conversation about how the student finds Computer Science, but a section of a past paper attempted cold and marked, with the lost marks tallied against the ten syllabus areas. That tally is almost always a surprise. A student who says they are weak on programming frequently turns out to be losing more marks on data transmission and the compiler comparison, because those feel easy and are therefore never revised.

From week two the useful artefact is the error log. The entry should name the topic and the command word, so a line reads "2.1, complete the trace table, lost 3 of 4" rather than "question 5b". Logs built that way group themselves, and the grouping is the teaching plan. Logs built around question numbers are unusable a fortnight later and tell a parent nothing.

By week eight there should be a full paper, sat in one sitting, marked question by question. That is the number you can compare with the school's mock, and the first point at which the word progress means anything specific. If the twelfth week arrives with no written plan for the final stretch, the honest reading is that nobody is steering.

02

How the 0478 grade is actually built

Two papers, no coursework, no tiering. That single sentence explains more about how to plan 0478 tuition than anything else on the syllabus, and it is worth stating because parents arriving from a science subject reasonably assume there is a practical component to worry about and parents arriving from maths assume there is a Core and an Extended route to choose between. Neither is true here.

Paper 1 covers the computer-systems half of the syllabus: the first six topic areas, from data representation through to automated and emerging technologies. Paper 2 covers the second four: algorithm design and problem-solving, programming, databases and Boolean logic. Each paper is scheduled at 1 hour 45 minutes, carries 75 marks and contributes half the grade. There is no mechanism by which a strong Paper 1 rescues a poor Paper 2.

That symmetry has a blunt consequence for how a weekly hour is spent. The theory half is examinable by reading and recall, and a motivated student can improve it substantially alone with a textbook and past questions. The algorithms half is not: it needs someone to watch the student attempt a trace table and say where the reasoning broke. If a tutor is spending most of the hour on Paper 1 content, the hour is being spent on the half the student could have covered without paying for it.

Check the current component details for the series your child is entered for on cambridgeinternational.org rather than taking them from a revision guide. Cambridge publishes syllabus updates on a cycle, past versions of 0478 differed in how the programming content was assessed, and second-hand material circulating in school WhatsApp groups is frequently a syllabus version or two behind.

Pseudocode, trace tables and the gap between coding and examined programming

  • Pseudocode conventions learned as rules, not approximated from Python habits
  • Trace tables completed to the last row, every time, before anything else
  • Standard algorithms amended to a new requirement rather than rewritten
  • Data-type declarations and array indexing checked line by line
  • Every answer re-read against the words of the question before it is handed in

The most frequent 0478 enquiry from Sharjah parents is some version of this: my child writes games in Python at home, so why is Paper 2 a 4? It is a fair question and the answer is structural. 0478 does not primarily examine whether a student can produce working code. It examines whether a student can read an algorithm written by somebody else, predict exactly what it does, find the flaw and describe the fix, and much of that happens in Cambridge's own pseudocode rather than in any language the student has chosen.

Cambridge pseudocode has fixed conventions: specific keyword capitalisation, declared data types, particular loop forms, and an array-indexing convention that can differ from the one a self-taught Python user assumes. A student who treats it as approximate English loses marks on the detail. A student who treats it as a small formal language with its own rules stops losing them, usually within a handful of sessions, because the content was never the problem.

Trace tables are where this becomes measurable. A trace table asks the student to record every variable's value at every step of an algorithm, in order. It is unforgiving, entirely mechanical, and the fastest diagnostic available: a student who cannot complete one cannot predict what their own code does either, which is why their debugging is guesswork and their programming answers drift away from the question. Drilling trace tables fixes two question types at once.

The practical plan is narrow. Take the standard algorithms the syllabus expects, dry-run each one on paper, then amend them to a stated new requirement rather than rewriting them from nothing. Exam programming questions almost always ask for an amendment or a completion. A student who has only ever written programs from a blank file has practised the one thing the paper rarely asks for.

04

The six computer-systems topics and the marks each one quietly costs

  • 1.1: practise conversions to time, and read explanation questions twice
  • 1.2: learn error-checking methods by what each one detects, not as a list
  • 1.3: answer the scenario the question gives, rather than describing the device
  • 1.4: build one explicit compiler-versus-interpreter comparison and reuse it
  • 1.5: pair every named threat with its mechanism and its countermeasure
  • 1.6: do not leave sensors, actuators and machine learning to study leave

Paper 1 looks like the easier half and behaves like it right up to the point marks are counted. The content is finite, the questions are predictable in shape, and most students feel reasonably confident. The losses are therefore not dramatic: they are two marks here, three there, spread across six topic areas, and they add up to a grade without ever producing a question the student remembers getting wrong.

Data representation leaks marks through arithmetic under time pressure and through explanation questions disguised as conversions. Asking why a developer uses hexadecimal is not asking for a conversion, and an answer that converts a number scores nothing. Data transmission leaks them through the error-checking methods: students memorise parity, checksum, echo check and check digit as a list, then meet a question asking which one detects which category of error, and the list does not help.

Hardware is the biggest single reservoir of avoidable loss, because describe and explain are marked differently and students default to describing. A question that supplies a scenario, a warehouse or a hospital monitor, is asking for the link between the device's properties and that scenario's needs. Software loses marks on the compiler and interpreter comparison, which turns up in some form in most series and attracts answers that describe both without comparing them. The internet section rewards precision about mechanisms: naming a threat earns the first mark, explaining how it works and what specifically prevents it earns the rest.

Automated and emerging technologies is short, often rushed at the end of Year 11, and quietly generous. A student who can describe a closed feedback loop with a named sensor and a named actuator, and distinguish robotics from machine learning in concrete terms, tends to clear it. Treating it as the last two lessons before study leave is how those marks get left behind.

05

What 0478 support costs around Sharjah, and what the travel premium actually buys

Begin with the figure nobody in this search result publishes: the difference between an online hourly rate and an in-home one. Market data for the UAE puts in-home one-to-one visits at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, with Bestimate's 2026 rate table showing AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors quoting AED 200 to 500. Qualified subject tutors working online are published lower, from about AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. The gap between those two bands is the travel premium, and it is worth asking what it buys.

It buys presence in the room, which for some students genuinely matters. What it does not buy is subject depth, because the premium is paid for geography. A Sharjah family paying the in-home band is selecting from the people willing to drive to Al Khan at 17:00, and in a subject as narrow as Computer Science that pool may contain nobody who has marked a 0478 Paper 2 against the mark scheme. Paying more for a smaller pool is the specific trade this market makes without naming it.

At the cheaper end, EdFlik publishes rates from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to 52, usually for university-student or generalist tutors. For Paper 1 theory that can be adequate. For Paper 2 it rarely is, because the tutor needs to have been marked on pseudocode themselves. Specialist IGCSE and A-Level rates run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and BartyED AED 650 at the named-examiner end. 0478 sits comfortably in the specialist band and almost never needs the premium one.

All of those are other providers' published rates as at October 2026, quoted so you have a frame of reference, and they are not IB Gram's price list. Ask any tutor whether the quote is per hour or per session, whether VAT is included, and what happens to a prepaid block if the match is wrong. Those three questions move the real cost more than the headline rate does.

Grade movement: reading a 0478 mock mark honestly

A mock mark is a weak instrument used carelessly and a strong one used properly, and the difference is almost entirely about whether you know what was sat. Two 0478 mocks a term apart can be a full paper against a single section, an untimed attempt against a timed one, or a teacher-written paper against a Cambridge one. Comparing the percentages without knowing which is comparing nothing, and it is how a family concludes that tuition is working when the only thing that changed was the difficulty of the paper.

So the first question about any mark is what produced it. Which paper, which series, how long was allowed, and was it marked against the published mark scheme or against a teacher's judgement. A tutor who marks to the mark scheme and shows you the annotation is handing you a mark you can line up against the next one. A tutor who reports a percentage is handing you a feeling with a number attached.

Second, look at where the marks moved rather than whether the total did. A student can gain six marks on Paper 1 recall while losing four on trace tables and show a two-mark improvement that conceals a worsening problem. The error log exists precisely for this: it lets you see that the 2.1 entries have stopped recurring, or that they have not. Topic-level movement is the signal. The total is the noise.

Third, be realistic about what a few weeks can move and refuse any claim beyond that. No tutor can promise a grade, and a confident number attached to a specific outcome is the clearest signal to walk away. What can be stated honestly is narrower and more useful: that a named error has stopped recurring across three marked scripts, and that the student is now completing trace tables unaided. Those are checkable. A promised grade is not.

07

SPEA, the Sharjah school map and what a parent can check

Sharjah's private schools are regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority. Its remit is wider than inspection: SPEA approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods in the emirate's private schools, which is a stronger form of oversight than parents arriving from other systems tend to assume. Federally, private schools are not obliged to follow a particular curriculum beyond Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies, but they must work within the Ministry of Education's general regulations.

For a 0478 family the practical consequence is that your school's curriculum offer, including which exam board and which syllabus codes it enters candidates for, sits inside an approved programme rather than being chosen freely each year. That is why a school can decline a request to enter a candidate for an additional subject, and why the answer to "can my child add Computer Science in Year 11" comes from the school's approved programme rather than from the examinations officer's goodwill.

What you can verify yourself is narrow but useful. The emirate's regulator publishes the school listing, so a school's name and status can be checked against the authority's own records rather than against a tutoring agency's logo wall. Your child's own school can tell you the exam board, the syllabus code, the series entered and the timetable zone, and all four should be in writing. If an agency names a school in a way that implies a relationship, ask the school.

Sharjah households that send children to Dubai schools live under two regulators at once. One child may be at a SPEA-regulated school in Al Majaz and another at a KHDA-regulated school across the border, with different term dates, different inspection frameworks and sometimes different exam boards for the same subject. Mapping that before you plan a revision calendar saves a genuine amount of friction in the exam term.

08

Entry deadlines, Cambridge zones and what a Sharjah candidate must have done by when

Nobody in this search result publishes an exam calendar, which is odd, because the deadlines are the part of the process that actually goes wrong. Cambridge runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Entries are made by the centre, not by you, and they close months before the first paper is sat.

Take the June series and count backwards, because that is the session a Sharjah candidate is entered for, with November as the resit route; the February and March series exists for India only and no centre here uses it. Final entries close in the spring, roughly four months ahead of the first paper, on a date your centre prints on the statement of entry. Forecast grades follow weeks before the papers. The written period then runs inside the June window set by your centre's zone timetable, results appear on Cambridge Direct in August, and certificates reach the centre some weeks after that. The shape of that timeline is the point. What a candidate sits is decided months before the first paper, which means a tutoring plan built in April is working inside choices already made in the spring.

The zone issue is less known and more dangerous. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after working from the wrong one. A revision schedule built from a timetable PDF found online, rather than from the one the centre confirms, is a real risk rather than a theoretical one.

Families whose children sit Pearson Edexcel International GCSE papers instead work to a different calendar: May/June and November series each year, with the November 2026 timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students the following day, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so check the live PDF rather than a restated date, including on this page.

Permits, honesty boundaries and what a 0478 tutor will not touch

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit rather than left open. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is issued through MoHRE, and it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anybody.

The official route is MoHRE's own service page, "Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing", which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system. A tutoring operation with premises and staff in Dubai is a different legal animal and needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute. IB Gram holds no regulator permit of that kind and should never be described as having one: it is a matching platform delivering lessons over video, with no office or centre in the UAE.

There is a separate rule parents should know about. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules indicates that private and charter school staff in Abu Dhabi are barred from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and that the MoHRE permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction. Verify the current wording against the authority's own policy document before relying on it, but the direction is clear enough that "your child's own teacher, privately" is not something to arrange.

The honesty boundary on the work itself is simple and we state it rather than leaving it vague. A tutor teaches, questions, marks and gives feedback on work the student has produced. A tutor does not write the coursework, the project or the answers a student hands to a teacher, and will decline if asked. For 0478 that mostly concerns school-set programming tasks: the tutor will read the student's code, ask what each line does, point at the line that fails and let the student fix it. Nor will a tutor supply Cambridge past papers, mark schemes or grade boundary tables as downloads. Those are Cambridge's to publish, and the right move is to cite cambridgeinternational.org and work from what your centre provides.

Where we tutor

Where 0478 students in Sharjah actually log in from

Sharjah is not one commute. Where a family lives determines what time a weekly session can realistically begin, whether the student arrives home fed or straight off a school bus, and how much of a 90-minute slot is spent settling. These are the areas 0478 enquiries most often come from and what each one implies for scheduling.

Al Majaz

Dense towers around the Khalid Lagoon, with a mix of Sharjah and Dubai school families. Bus returns run late, so an IGCSE Computer Science tutor near Al Majaz is usually scheduled from 17:30 or later on weekdays.

Al Nahda

Effectively a Dubai border suburb, and the heaviest commute in the emirate. Students at Dubai schools can get home after 16:30 on a bad day, which makes a weekend morning slot more reliable than a weekday one.

Muwaileh

Home to several large campuses and a younger family profile. A 0478 tutor for Muwaileh families often works around school clubs that run until 16:00, which makes a 17:00 start workable in a way it is not nearer the lagoon.

Al Khan

Coastal, quieter in the evenings, and close enough to Sharjah's own schools that students are frequently home by 15:30. The earliest practical weekday slots in the emirate tend to come from here.

Al Taawun

A corridor of towers facing Dubai, with a large share of Year 10 and Year 11 students sitting Cambridge papers at Dubai centres. Scheduling here has to accommodate the same evening traffic as Al Nahda.

Aljada and Al Zahia

Newer master-planned communities with villa households and a growing school cluster. Siblings often share a weekly hour across two subjects, which works for 0478 only if each child gets a separate marked script.

University City and Al Suyoh

Academic households and a high proportion of students who intend to continue to AS Computer Science. Here the Paper 2 work is less about the Year 11 grade and more about not hitting the 9618 wall.

Khor Fakkan and Kalba

Sharjah's east-coast exclaves, where the private-school choice is narrow and the nearest specialist in a subject like Computer Science may be in another emirate entirely. Video delivery removes that limit outright.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Sharjah

Al Majaz, Al Taawun and the lagoon strip

The oldest private-school cluster in the emirate and the one with the longest Cambridge history. Computer Science cohorts here are small, which matters: a set of twelve students means no setting, so the same class holds a student writing confident pseudocode and one who has never debugged anything.

  • Victoria International School of Sharjah
  • Sharjah English School
  • The Westminster School Sharjah
  • Delta English School
  • Al Maaref Private School

Muwaileh, University City and Al Zahia

The growth corridor, with large campuses and bigger year groups. Enquiries from this cluster are often about Paper 2 rather than Paper 1, because the theory is well taught in a big department and the programming time is what gets squeezed by cohort size.

  • American School of Creative Science - Muwaileh
  • International School of Creative Science - Muwaileh
  • Wesgreen International School
  • Emirates National School - Sharjah
  • Scholars International Academy

Al Nahda, Al Qasimia and the Dubai border

Households split between Sharjah and Dubai schooling, and the cluster where SPEA private schools in Sharjah and KHDA-regulated Dubai schools sit inside the same family. Two children can be following the same syllabus code under two different regulators, with different term dates.

  • Our Own English High School - Sharjah
  • Ajyal International School
  • Al Shola Private School
  • Australian International School - Sharjah

Named schools are listed as local context so you can see which 0478 cohorts we hear from. IB Gram has no affiliation with, and claims no endorsement from, any school named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the paper, not just the subject

Send the syllabus code, the series your child is entered for, the last mark and which paper the losses sit on. "Year 11, 0478, Paper 2 at 38 out of 75, trace tables" produces a match in a different league from "needs help with Computer Science". The code matters because 0478 and 0984 report differently and ICT 0417 is a separate subject.

  2. 02

A free trial lesson with a diagnostic attached

One free trial lesson per family, no card details taken, and the condition is simply that it is one lesson. Ask for it to include a cold attempt at a past-paper section, marked. That turns a get-to-know-you call into the first piece of evidence, and it tells you within an hour whether the tutor marks to the scheme or to an impression.

  3. 03

    The first marked script

After the trial, you should receive the annotated script and a topic tally of the marks lost, mapped to the ten 0478 areas. Read it even if the subject is unfamiliar. The annotation tells you whether the tutor is working from the mark scheme's language or from their own, which is the single most reliable quality signal available to a non-specialist.

  4. 04

A weekly rhythm with a dated log

A fixed weekly slot in Gulf Standard Time, a short timed task between sessions, and an error log updated with dates. The slot matters in Sharjah: an Al Nahda family commuting back from a Dubai school needs a later start than an Al Khan family, and a slot set optimistically is a slot that gets cancelled.

  5. 05

A written plan for the final stretch

Ten to fourteen weeks out, the log should turn into a one-page plan: named topics against dates, which papers will be sat and when, and what gets dropped if time runs short. If a tutor cannot produce that page, you are funding weekly lessons rather than a route to the series, and the two are not the same purchase.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Marking, not reassurance

Sessions produce a marked script annotated in the mark scheme's own words and an error log naming topics and command words. The point is that a parent who has never written code can still audit the work. Reassurance is free everywhere; marked evidence is the thing worth paying for and the thing most of this search result does not describe.

0478 by syllabus code, not by subject label

Matching happens on the code and the paper, because "Computer Science" covers 0478, 0984, ICT 0417 and AS 9618, and a tutor comfortable with one is not automatically useful on another. Telling us the code is how a Sharjah family avoids paying specialist rates for a generalist who last saw pseudocode in a different syllabus version.

Pseudocode treated as its own language

The gap between writing Python and scoring on Paper 2 is pseudocode conventions and trace tables, and both are teachable in weeks rather than terms. Tutors drill them until completing a trace table is mechanical, because that one skill carries the algorithm questions, the debugging questions and the programming amendments at the same time.

Gulf Standard Time, and no drive

Lessons run live online over video at a time set around a Sharjah school day, which means the Al Ittihad Road queue is not part of the arithmetic. The hour that an in-home arrangement spends on travel is spent on the paper instead, and the tutor pool is national rather than whoever lives near Al Taawun.

Boundaries stated, not implied

A tutor marks and teaches the student's own work and will decline to produce work that gets submitted. No past papers or mark schemes are supplied as downloads, no regulator approval is claimed, and no grade is promised. Several pages in this search result do the opposite on at least one of those counts, which is a risk carried by the student.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sharjah: your questions answered

Is Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478 tiered into Core and Extended?+

No. Unlike Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 or the sciences, 0478 has no Core and Extended split. Every candidate sits the same two written papers, each carrying 75 marks and half the grade, so there is no tier decision for a parent to make and no ceiling on the attainable grade built into the entry. That changes how tuition is planned: the work is about covering ten topic areas to the same depth for everyone, rather than deciding which route suits a student. Confirm the current structure for your child's series on cambridgeinternational.org, because Cambridge revises syllabuses on a published cycle.

Which programming language should my child use for the 0478 programming questions?+

The written papers are answered in Cambridge's own pseudocode or in a permitted high-level language, and the choice usually follows whatever the school teaches, most often Python, Java or Visual Basic. The language matters less than people expect. What is examined is the logic, the control structures and the ability to read and amend somebody else's algorithm, and the pseudocode conventions carry marks of their own. A student fluent in Python who has never written Cambridge pseudocode still loses marks on notation. Ask your school which language it teaches, then treat pseudocode as a second one to learn properly.

What should exist on paper after four weeks of 0478 lessons?+

Four things. A marked cold diagnostic from the first lesson with the lost marks tallied against the ten syllabus areas. A dated error log naming the topic and command word behind each loss. A second timed attempt on those same topics, marked against the published mark scheme, so movement is measurable rather than felt. And a short statement of what has cleared and what has not. If the only artefacts after four weeks are session notes and a verbal impression, you have no way to judge the work, which is the position most families in this market end up in.

How is the 0478 grade divided between the two written papers?+

Evenly. Paper 1, Computer Systems, covers the first six syllabus areas and carries 75 marks. Paper 2, Algorithms, Programming and Logic, covers the remaining four and also carries 75 marks. Each paper is scheduled at 1 hour 45 minutes and contributes half the final grade, with no coursework component anywhere in the course. The practical consequence is that a strong theory performance cannot compensate for a weak algorithms performance, which is why a tutoring plan weighted towards Paper 1 content tends to produce a disappointing result. Verify the component details for your series on cambridgeinternational.org.

My son can code in Python but loses marks on pseudocode. Why does that happen?+

Because the paper is not mainly testing whether he can produce working code. It tests whether he can read an algorithm written by somebody else, predict exactly what it does, find the flaw and amend it, often in Cambridge pseudocode with its own keyword and data-type conventions. Self-taught Python habits transfer imperfectly: array indexing, declared types and loop forms all differ in small ways that cost marks. The fix is short and specific. Treat pseudocode as a separate small language with rules, and drill trace tables until completing one is automatic. Most students close this gap in a handful of sessions.

Does Cambridge IGCSE 0478 still include pre-release material before the examination?+

This is exactly the kind of detail that has changed between syllabus versions, so do not take it from a revision guide or a school WhatsApp group. Earlier versions of the course handled the programming element differently from the current one, and material circulating second-hand is frequently a version or two out of date. Check the syllabus document for the specific series your child is entered for on cambridgeinternational.org, and ask your school's examinations officer to confirm what the centre has been sent. Planning a revision timetable around a component that no longer exists wastes weeks that a Year 11 candidate does not have.

How do I tell whether my daughter's 0478 mock mark has genuinely moved?+

Ask what produced each mark before comparing them. Which paper, which series, how long was allowed, and was it marked against the published mark scheme or a teacher's judgement. Two mocks a term apart are often not comparable at all. Then look at where the marks moved rather than at the total: a six-mark gain on recall alongside a four-mark loss on trace tables shows as a small improvement while concealing a worsening problem. Topic-level movement recorded in the error log is the signal you want. A single percentage, with no record of what was sat, tells you almost nothing.

Is Cambridge 0478 the same qualification as 0984 Computer Science?+

The subject content is effectively the same; the reporting scale differs. 0478 reports on the A* to G scale and 0984 on the 9 to 1 scale, and schools choose between them for comparability and reporting reasons rather than because the course changes. Teaching, past papers and revision are interchangeable in practice, but grade boundaries and target-setting are not: a 6 under 9 to 1 is not a C, and translating between the scales by eye is where expectations get mis-set. If your child's reports show numbers rather than letters, the entry is almost certainly 0984.

Should my child take 0478 or Cambridge IGCSE ICT 0417 at a Sharjah school?+

They are different subjects with different demands, and the choice is usually made by the school's option blocks rather than by the family. 0478 is a computer-science course built on algorithms, programming, logic and how systems work, assessed by two written papers. ICT 0417 is about using applications competently and includes practical assessment of software skills. A student who enjoys building things and does not mind abstraction belongs on 0478; one who prefers applied, document-based work often does better on 0417. If AS Computer Science 9618 is a possibility later, 0478 is the sensible preparation.

Can a 0478 tutor teaching from outside the UAE work legally with my child?+

The UAE permit framework applies to individuals providing private tutoring in the UAE: the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued through MoHRE, and is granted free of charge for two years. Anyone offering private tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so treat any quoted figure with suspicion. The honest position for a cross-border online tutor is to ask the provider directly how the arrangement is structured, and to check MoHRE's own private tutor licensing page rather than relying on a tutoring website's summary.

What does SPEA actually control in my child's Sharjah school?+

More than parents usually assume. The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, so the school's curriculum offer sits inside an approved programme rather than being set freely each year. Federally, private schools must follow Arabic, social studies and Islamic studies and work within the Ministry of Education's general regulations, but are otherwise free on curriculum choice. For a 0478 family the practical effect is that whether a subject can be added in Year 11 is a programme question, not a favour the examinations officer can grant.

How late can a 0478 session start for a family driving back into Al Nahda?+

Later than most schedules assume. Al Nahda households commuting from Dubai schools can be home after 16:30 on a heavy evening, and a slot set at 16:30 is a slot that gets cancelled. Because lessons run over live video rather than requiring anybody to travel, start times through to about 21:00 Gulf Standard Time are workable, and a weekend morning slot is frequently more reliable than any weekday one during term. Set the time around the actual arrival, not the hoped-for arrival: a consistent 18:00 beats an optimistic 17:00 that happens two weeks in three.

What does an hour of 0478 support cost in the Sharjah market?+

Other providers' published rates as at October 2026 give the frame. Generalist online tutors advertise from roughly AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from about AED 33 to 52. Qualified subject tutors online run AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150. Specialist IGCSE and A-Level tutors run AED 200 to 450 and above, TutorChase publishing AED 270, and named-examiner rates reach AED 650 at BartyED. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 because travel is inside the rate. Those are the market's numbers, not a quote from us.

Will a 0478 tutor fix my son's school programming task for him?+

No, and you should be wary of anyone who offers to. A tutor teaches, questions, marks and gives feedback on work the student has produced; writing or completing work that a student submits is not something we do, and it exposes the student rather than helping him. On a school-set programming task the tutor will read his code, ask what each line is doing, point at the line that fails and let him fix it. That produces a student who can debug the next one. Nor will a tutor supply Cambridge past papers or mark schemes as downloads, because those are Cambridge's to publish.

When does the entry close for the Cambridge series my child is sitting?+

Months before the first paper, and the centre makes the entry rather than you. For the June series that a candidate here sits, entries close in the spring, forecast grades follow weeks before the papers, the written period falls in the June window on your centre's zone timetable, results appear on Cambridge Direct in August and certificates follow some weeks later; the November series runs on the same pattern shifted round the year and is the normal resit route. Ask your examinations officer in writing which series your child is entered for and which of Cambridge's six administrative zones the centre belongs to, because Cambridge states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable.

Ask for the evidence before you ask for the price

If you take one thing from this page, make it the first question you put to any 0478 tutor in Sharjah: what will exist on paper after four lessons? A specialist answers immediately, in nouns, and describes a marked script, a tallied diagnostic and a dated error log. Anyone who answers in adjectives is selling the thing this market is already full of. Tell us the syllabus code, the series and the paper where the marks are going, take the free trial lesson with a cold diagnostic attached, and read the first marked script yourself. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and the decision after that is yours to make on evidence.
