IB IGCSE Tutor for Victoria International School of Sharjah Students in Sharjah

Comparing quotes for an IB IGCSE tutor for Victoria International School of Sharjah students in Sharjah is hard because nobody shows you the other numbers. School fees in Sharjah are approved by SPEA, which also approves curricula and assessment methods, so one half of the education budget is a regulated figure. Tutoring is the unregulated half. This page sets both beside each other. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time.

  • SPEA's actual powers quoted, not summarised as inspection
  • Every AED band attributed to the provider or survey that published it
  • One-to-one live video delivery; no visits to UAE addresses
  • Free trial lesson, one session, no card details required

IB & IGCSE in Sharjah

One half of the budget is regulated; the other is not

Sharjah families are comparing tutoring quotes against nothing, which is the root of the difficulty. A figure of AED 200 an hour means very little on its own. It means something when it sits beside the school fee, the transport cost, the examination entries and the alternatives, and it means something quite different depending on which of those numbers are fixed and which are not. In Sharjah, unusually, one of them is approved by a regulator.

The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate, and its powers go further than inspection. Sharjah's authority, along with Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge, approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. So curriculum and fee approval, not just inspection, sits with the emirate regulator. That is a different arrangement from a pure inspection regime and it has a practical consequence for a family: the largest line in the education budget is set through a regulated process rather than purely by a school.

Tutoring is the opposite. There is no approval process for a rate, no published schedule, and no outcome data anywhere in this market to justify one figure over another. Three of the six highest-ranking tutoring pages in this cluster publish no price at all, and two of the ones that do quote in US dollars, which is not a currency a Sharjah family transacts in. So the regulated half of the budget is visible and the unregulated half is deliberately obscured, which is exactly the wrong way round for a parent trying to decide.

The figures that do exist come from providers and surveys rather than from us. EdFlik advertises online tutoring from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to 52. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes around AED 270. The Bestimate rate survey puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 and subject specialists at AED 200 to 450 or above, with BartyED advertising AED 650 for a named premium tutor. Monthly packages circulate at around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits.

This page therefore puts tutoring next to the rest of the budget, explains why a Sharjah quote often differs from a Dubai one, and names the six things that actually move a figure - only one of which is about the tutor's ability. It also sets out what a family should settle in writing before a first invoice, because terms move a monthly total further than an hourly rate does. Tuition for Sharjah families is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram does not offer home visits in Sharjah, and home visits are a service offered only in India.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The budget behaves differently at each stage, because the number of subjects in play and the scarcity of the right person both change. Below is what each stage costs and why.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3

The cheapest stage to intervene in and the one families skip. Foundational work is short, the lower bands of the market serve it well, and nothing external is at stake yet. A fluency or written-method repair here costs a fraction of the same repair in Year 11, when other subjects have inherited the weakness.

Sharjah schools set and stream in most cases, and the set a pupil occupies at the end of Year 9 often informs the IGCSE tier a department later proposes. Spending modestly in Year 8 to protect an Extended-tier entry is far cheaper than a Year 11 attempt to lift a capped grade.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel IGCSE

Nine or ten subjects and a terminal series, which is where costs concentrate if nobody plans the shape. The sensible distribution is uneven: a heavier autumn in Year 10 while habits form, light middle terms with a marked paper instead of weekly sessions, and a concentrated final quarter in Year 11.

UAE candidates sit the June and November series; the February/March Cambridge series is offered in India only. The expensive months for a Sharjah family are therefore February to April, when specialist availability tightens across the whole country and rates at the upper end firm up.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

Lumpier than IGCSE, because internal assessment deadlines cluster. A family may need two intensive months around an Internal Assessment or Extended Essay window and nothing for the two after it, so a flat arrangement across two years overpays substantially.

Sharjah has a smaller Diploma cohort than Dubai, which makes criteria-specific specialists locally scarce as a function of market size. That scarcity is the main driver of rate at this stage rather than anything about the subject itself.

A LevelAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

International A Level

Fewer subjects at higher rates, because depth in one specification is the scarcest thing in the market. The published AED 200 to 450 specialist band applies and premium named tutors advertise up to AED 650, so a single subject in an examination year passes AED 1,000 a month comfortably.

Sixth forms publish IGCSE entry grades for their A Level courses and apply them, often with a mathematics requirement attached for the sciences. Those thresholds give a family a numeric target, which is more useful for budgeting than any general sense of how a child is doing.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Scarcity drives rate more than difficulty does. Each subject below carries its specification code and a note on what tends to move the quote.

Mathematics (Cambridge IGCSE 0580)

Core and Extended

The best-supplied subject, which keeps quotes near the middle of the published bands. Short targeted blocks work well, so a two-month arrangement aimed at written method is often the whole requirement.

Mathematics A (Pearson Edexcel 4MA1)

Foundation and Higher

Similarly well supplied. The only thing that lifts the quote is a brief involving reconciliation of a mid-course board change, which adds a few sessions once rather than raising the ongoing rate.

Physics (Cambridge IGCSE 0625)

Core and Extended

A thinner pool at Extended tier, which pushes quotes towards the upper band. A practical-component block serves all three sciences at once and lowers the effective cost per subject considerably.

Chemistry (Cambridge IGCSE 0620)

Core and Extended

Moles and organic chemistry are the paid-for topics. Both are narrow enough that a defined short block beats an open arrangement, which is the main way a chemistry budget stays bounded.

Biology (Cambridge IGCSE 0610)

Core and Extended

The cheapest science to support, because much of the gap is content volume closable with a revision guide and a schedule. What justifies paid hours is terminology marking, which takes weeks.

First Language English (Cambridge 0500 and 0990)

IGCSE

Mid-band and unusually efficient per pound spent, since three or four marked and rewritten pieces often move a grade. Buying nine months of English discussion is a far worse use of the same money.

Literature in English (Cambridge 0475 and 0992)

IGCSE

Quotes depend on the school's set text list, because an unusual text narrows the pool sharply. Establish the list before agreeing anything, since it affects both match time and price.

Economics and Business Studies

IGCSE

Mid-band, efficient when aimed at evaluation writing rather than content. A pupil who knows the definitions and loses the whole evaluation allocation needs weeks of targeted work, not terms.

Computer Science (Cambridge IGCSE 0478)

IGCSE

A thin pool, particularly for Cambridge pseudocode conventions, so expect longer match times and upper-band quotes. Worth asking about availability before building a budget around it.

Arabic as a first or additional language

IGCSE and school-stream

Mandatory provision alongside any international curriculum under the federal baseline. Support must reinforce the school's prescribed content, which also means it is a narrow and usually short arrangement.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways to buy, described by what each costs over a defined period rather than by how the sessions feel. The first is the one that prevents the other two from being bought unnecessarily.

A single diagnostic block

Three or four sessions with a written output: a timed paper marked against the real scheme, lost marks counted by type, and a recommendation stating how much further work is justified and in which subject. At the mid band that is roughly AED 450 to 1,200 and it is the spend that prevents a larger one.

  • A defined commitment with no automatic continuation
  • A marked timed paper and a written recommendation as the deliverable
  • A recommendation that may be to stop, or to speak to the school first
  • No package terms, no notice period, nothing to cancel

Weekly one-to-one in one or two subjects

The standard arrangement, priced against the published bands: roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor and AED 200 to 450 for a specialist. One hour a week per subject across a thirteen-week term puts a single subject at roughly AED 1,950 to AED 5,900.

  • Session content set by the school's next assessment
  • One piece of the pupil's own work marked between sessions
  • A monthly note of what has moved and what has not
  • Pause without penalty during school holidays and study leave

A reserved final-quarter block

Money held back deliberately and released in the eight to twelve weeks before the June series, when timed practice and marked rewriting are the only interventions that still move a grade. Specialist availability tightens from January, so booking the slot early protects both the time and the rate.

  • Six to ten sessions per subject, concentrated before the series
  • Full past papers under timing, marked and returned with rewrite tasks
  • Slots moved to post-Iftar timing where revision overlaps Ramadan
  • A contingency held for a single-subject November entry

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Sharjah

01

What SPEA actually approves, and why that is unusual

Most discussion of UAE education regulators treats them as inspection bodies, which undersells what Sharjah's does. The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate, and it is one of two UAE authorities - the other being Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge - that approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Fee and curriculum approval, not merely inspection, sits with the emirate regulator.

For a parent that has a direct consequence. The largest single line in the education budget passes through a regulated approval process, which means it is neither arbitrary nor purely a school's commercial decision. It also means a question about fees has an addressee: the authority that approved them. That is a more concrete position than families in some other arrangements enjoy.

It also sets up the contrast this page is about. Fees are approved; tutoring rates are not. There is no approval process for an hourly figure, no published schedule, and no outcome data in this market that would justify one rate over another. Not one of the researched providers publishes a statistic with a sample size, a date and a stated method, which means every rate above the floor is a claim about positioning rather than evidence of effect.

The wider regulator map is worth knowing because it is genuinely confusing and because competitors get it wrong or omit it entirely. Dubai has the Knowledge and Human Development Authority. Abu Dhabi and Al Ain have the Department of Education and Knowledge. Sharjah has SPEA. Ras Al Khaimah has its Department of Knowledge. And the Ministry of Education plays a supervisory role for private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. SPEA appears once in an entire researched cluster, and ADEK not at all.

02

The whole education budget, itemised

A tutoring quote only becomes interpretable beside the other numbers, and almost nobody writes those out. The exercise takes twenty minutes and it changes decisions. List the school fee for the year, the transport charge, uniform and resources, any examination entries payable where a pupil sits a paper as a private candidate, and then the tutoring you are considering. Convert all of it to a monthly figure, because that is how the money actually leaves.

Two things usually become visible. The first is that tutoring at the specialist band across two subjects is a material fraction of a Sharjah school fee rather than a marginal addition, which is a different decision from the one a quoted hourly rate implies. The second is that the controllable line is the tutoring line. The fee is approved and fixed, the transport is what it is, and the entries are the school's arithmetic. Tutoring is the only item a family actually decides each month.

The examination entries item catches people out and belongs on the list. Entries are normally handled through the school for a registered candidate, but a pupil sitting a paper as a private candidate - including a November retake arranged outside their own school - may face separate charges through an approved centre. That cost arrives in a specific month, is not part of any tutoring quote, and is best established by asking the examinations officer rather than assuming.

The context also cuts the other way, and it should be said. Set against a year's fees, a short diagnostic block of three or four sessions is a very small number, and it is the item on the list most likely to prevent waste elsewhere. The argument for writing out the whole budget is not that tutoring is expensive; it is that an uncontrolled tutoring line is, and a controlled one is frequently the best value item on the page.

03

Sharjah's fee base, and what families do with the difference

International-curriculum school fees in Sharjah generally sit below comparable Dubai schools, which is one reason many families choose the emirate while working across the border. That difference is real and it produces a predictable behaviour: a portion of it is reallocated to tutoring, transport or activities. Whether that is a good trade depends entirely on whether the tutoring line is controlled.

An uncontrolled reallocation looks like this. The fee saving is notionally available, so a weekly arrangement in two subjects is agreed without a diagnosis, and it runs for eighteen months because nothing in it has a stated end point. The total exceeds the fee saving, nobody can say what it bought, and the family concludes that education in the UAE is simply expensive. That sequence is extremely common and it is a planning failure rather than a pricing one.

A controlled reallocation looks different. A diagnostic block establishes which subject and which error category is worth paying for. A defined arrangement with a stated target and an end point runs for a term. The final quarter before the series gets a reserved block. The total is a fraction of the fee difference and the outcome is attributable. Same money, different structure, and the structure is the whole of the difference.

There is a Sharjah-specific version of the same point worth naming. Because the emirate's fee base is lower, the tuition-centre market is comparatively well developed, particularly around Muwaileh and University City where student supply is close at hand. Group rates of roughly AED 100 to 150 per pupil are easy to find. That is good value for content coverage and it does not diagnose one child's specific lost marks, which is the thing that moves a grade.

04

Market rates in AED, and why a Sharjah quote can differ

The published national bands apply in Sharjah as elsewhere, and they are wide. EdFlik advertises online tutoring from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to 52. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes around AED 270. The Bestimate survey puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 and specialists at AED 200 to 450 or above, and BartyED advertises AED 650 for a named premium tutor.

Two Sharjah factors can shift a quote within those bands. The first is supply: a well-developed tuition-centre market and a large nearby student population push the lower bands down, so the floor is genuinely accessible here. The second is the Dubai boundary. A tutor based in Dubai quoting for an in-home arrangement in Al Nahda or Al Khan is pricing a cross-border journey at the worst possible hour, and that can take a quote above the national in-home band rather than below it.

Monthly packages are also common and worth dividing out before comparing. Packages circulating include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, which works out near AED 100 an hour, and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home visits, which is roughly AED 200 to 225 an hour. The in-home package delivers the same eight teaching hours as the online one at more than double the price, and the difference is travel.

None of these bands comes with evidence. No provider in this market publishes outcome data with a sample size, a date and a method. Competitor pages carry satisfaction percentages, self-asserted star ratings and claims about the proportion of students reaching top grades, with nothing checkable behind them - one shows a rating from twenty reviews beside a student figure orders of magnitude larger. A higher rate is a claim about positioning, and a family paying it should know that.

05

The Dubai boundary, and who pays for crossing it

This is the Sharjah cost factor that has no equivalent elsewhere in the country. A substantial share of the specialist tutoring supply in the northern emirates is based in Dubai, and the two cities are separated by some of the heaviest peak congestion in the region. A tutor travelling into Al Nahda, Al Khan or Al Majaz for a 5pm session is committing a journey that can exceed an hour each way, and it is priced into the rate whether the invoice itemises it or not.

The arithmetic is worth doing. A two-hour round trip to deliver a one-hour lesson is a three-hour commitment, and across a thirteen-week term that is roughly twenty-six hours of travel inside thirteen hours of teaching. No rate makes that attractive to a tutor on a sustainable basis, which is why such arrangements tend to be quoted at or above the top of the AED 180 to 500 in-home band, or to collapse into fortnightly sessions after a few weeks.

The second cost is the one that does not appear anywhere. When the cross-border arrangement is not viable, the family is offered somebody local and general instead, and the specialism quietly disappears while the in-home premium does not. A Sharjah family paying AED 300 an hour for a generalist because the Extended-tier Chemistry specialist would not drive from Dubai has made the worst trade available in this market, and they made it for geographic reasons.

Removing the journey removes both problems at once. IB Gram delivers one-to-one tuition to Sharjah households over live video in Gulf Standard Time, which means the tutor is selected for the specification and tier rather than for which side of a boundary they live on. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered in India only.

Six things that actually move a quote

Families assume the variable is quality and it usually is not. Six factors move a tutoring quote in this market, and only two of them concern the person's ability. Knowing which one is operating in a given conversation tells you whether the figure is negotiable and whether paying it buys anything relevant to your child's problem.

The first is scarcity of the specification. Extended-tier Computer Science 0478 with pseudocode conventions, Additional Mathematics 0606, Arabic as a first language or an unusual literature set text all have thin pools, and a quote reflects supply. That is a legitimate thing to pay for and it is availability rather than excellence. The second is the calendar: specialist rates firm up from January as the June series approaches, so identical teaching costs more in March than in September.

The third is travel, which in Sharjah frequently means the Dubai boundary. The fourth is what sits inside the rate - whether marking happens between sessions, how many sessions a month contains, whether unused sessions roll over, and what notice ends the arrangement. Two providers at the same hourly figure can invoice a third apart on terms alone, which is why the terms matter more than the headline.

The fifth and sixth do concern the person. Diagnostic capability - the ability to mark a timed script against the published scheme and categorise the losses - is a narrower skill than subject teaching, and it is the clearest justification for paying above the qualified-teacher band. Reputation is the sixth, and it is the one with no evidence behind it anywhere in this market, which is worth knowing before paying for it.

07

What no invoice should include, at any band

  • Written, edited or supplied coursework: never, at any band
  • Board documents handed over as files: no; the official page is linked instead
  • Satisfaction percentages, star ratings and grade promises: not evidence
  • VAT treatment: get a plain written statement, not an assumption

Some items should not appear at AED 45 or at AED 650. Written, edited or supplied coursework is the clearest. One page ranking in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at a published price, which is a malpractice trigger rather than a service, and the exposure falls on the candidate whose whole qualification is at stake rather than on the provider taking the fee.

Nor should anybody supply Cambridge, Pearson or IB syllabuses, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or subject guides as files. Those belong to the boards and the right behaviour is to link the official page so a family reads the current version. A provider offering a folder of mark schemes as part of a package has told you how it treats rules in general, which is worth knowing before any commitment.

Claims nobody can substantiate should not be in a rate either. No provider in this market publishes outcome data with a sample size, a date and a method, so satisfaction percentages, star ratings and claims about the proportion of pupils reaching top grades are marketing figures. A promise of a specific grade is a reason to decline. And no provider holds regulator approval: IB Gram holds no SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, MoE, MoHRE, Cambridge, Pearson or IB approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership and claims none.

On tax, this page states nothing about the UAE VAT treatment of tuition fees, because that would require a Federal Tax Authority citation and the position turns on a provider's own registration and the nature of the service. What a family can reasonably require is a quoted AED figure with a plain statement of whether VAT is included, excluded or not applicable, plus a tax registration number where one is held, in writing before the first invoice.

08

Coverage, permits and the first session

Mathematics, the sciences and the essay subjects at both Cambridge and Pearson tiers are well covered in this set, and a match is usually quick. Thinner briefs exist: Computer Science 0478 with pseudocode conventions, Additional Mathematics 0606, Arabic as a first language, and unusual literature text lists. In a given week the honest answer may be that nobody suitable is free, and that is better stated than filled with a generalist at the same rate.

Three outcomes are possible and a family should be told which applies before any money changes hands. The brief is covered and a trial lesson is scheduled within days. The brief is covered by a specialist working into Gulf Standard Time from outside the UAE, which is disclosed rather than concealed behind a local-looking telephone number - and two ranking competitors in this market route UAE parents to numbers outside the country without saying so. Or the brief is not currently covered, in which case it is named.

Parents are entitled to check the one credential that exists. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system under the service name Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, which lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Because it costs nothing, a provider citing licensing costs in its rate has misread its own paperwork. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no schedule of amounts has been published.

The first session is free, is one session, and requires no card details. The useful things to bring are your child's last marked paper and the itemised monthly education budget from earlier on this page. Within that hour it should be possible to say which subject and which error category is worth paying for, what that would cost against the published bands, and whether the answer is nothing. A recommendation of none is a legitimate outcome and a frequent one.

Where we tutor

The Sharjah communities this page serves

Sharjah's residential districts differ sharply in commute, and for many families the commute is into Dubai rather than within the emirate. These notes cover what each district does to a weekday session.

Al Majaz and Al Qasimia

Central lagoon-side districts with short runs to the city's school clusters. Pupils are often home by four, which makes a weekday session practical without anybody needing to drive.

Al Khan and Al Mamzar

Coastal districts on the Dubai boundary, where the morning and evening cross-border flows dominate the roads. An online slot avoids the worst of a problem that no local tutor can solve.

Al Nahda

Dense apartment living right on the Dubai line, with some of the heaviest peak congestion in the country. A tutor driving in here for a 5pm session is pricing a journey nobody would choose to make.

Muwaileh and University City

Close to the university quarter, which is where the lower bands of the market draw their supply. Good value for content coverage; not where Extended-tier script diagnosis is usually found.

Al Zahia and Tilal City

Newer planned communities further from the centre, with longer internal distances. Weekend morning sessions work well here for full timed papers, which need an undisturbed ninety minutes.

Al Taawun and Maryam Island

Tower living where lift and parking delays add real time to any visit beyond the drive itself. Sessions after six are routine and fit an online arrangement without a surcharge.

Al Suyoh and Sharjah's inland fringe

Long runs to every school cluster, which makes an in-home arrangement poor value whatever the rate. Removing the journey is what keeps a session count intact through the spring.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Write the whole budget out monthly

School fees, transport, uniform and resources, examination entries, and the tutoring you are considering, all converted to monthly figures. It takes twenty minutes and it makes a quoted hourly rate interpretable, because it shows that tutoring is the only line on the list you actually decide each month.

  2. 02

Ask the terms before the rate

How many sessions a month contains, whether marking sits inside the figure, whether unused sessions roll over, what notice ends the arrangement, and whether holiday months are billed. Two providers at the same hourly rate can invoice a third apart on terms alone, and the terms are where a budget quietly overruns.

  3. 03

    Buy the diagnostic block first

Three or four sessions with a written output: a timed paper marked against the real scheme, lost marks counted by type, and a recommendation naming the subject and the number of sessions. At the mid band that is roughly AED 450 to 1,200 against a year's fees, and it is the item most likely to prevent waste elsewhere.

  4. 04

    Price the journey separately

In Sharjah the in-home premium frequently means a Dubai-based tutor crossing the boundary at peak, which can be an hour each way. Decide whether an adult in the room is worth that, and remember the more common outcome is that the specialism is quietly swapped for a local generalist at the same premium.

  5. 05

    Spend unevenly across the year

Heavier in August and the autumn of Year 10, light in the middle terms with one marked paper a month, concentrated in the eight to twelve weeks before the June series. Specialist availability tightens from January, so booking the spring slot in January protects both the time and the rate.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

SPEA's real powers stated

Sharjah's authority approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods, not merely inspects. SPEA appears once in an entire researched competitor cluster, and the distinction matters because it is what makes the school fee a regulated figure and tutoring an unregulated one.

Rates published with their sources

Every AED band on this page is attributed to the provider or survey that published it, stated as a market range rather than as our price. Three of the highest-ranking pages in this market publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars, which is not a currency a Sharjah family transacts in.

Cost shown in context

A tutoring quote means little alone and a great deal beside the fee, the transport and the entries. Writing the whole budget out monthly shows that tutoring is the controllable line, which is both the risk and the opportunity in the figure.

The Dubai boundary priced honestly

A Dubai-based tutor crossing into Al Nahda or Al Khan at 5pm is committing three hours to deliver one. That is priced into the in-home band, and where the arrangement is declined the usual outcome is a local generalist at the same premium rather than a lower rate.

Delivery and coverage stated plainly

Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Sharjah; home visits are an India-only service. Where a minority subject has no specialist free, it is named rather than filled with a generalist at the same rate.

No claim that cannot be evidenced

No grade promises, no satisfaction percentages, no self-asserted ratings, and no suggestion that SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, MoE, MoHRE, Cambridge, Pearson or the IB has approved, accredited or partnered with IB Gram. There is no UAE office or centre.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Sharjah: your questions answered

What does SPEA actually control for a Victoria International School of Sharjah family?+

More than inspection. The Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in the emirate, and it is one of two UAE authorities - with Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge - that approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. So fee and curriculum approval sits with the regulator rather than solely with a school. For a parent that means the largest line in the education budget passes through a regulated process, and a question about fees has an addressee.

Are tutoring rates regulated in Sharjah the way fees are?+

No, and the contrast is the point. There is no approval process for an hourly tutoring figure, no published schedule, and no outcome data anywhere in this market that would justify one rate over another. Not one of the researched providers publishes a statistic with a sample size, a date and a stated method. So the regulated half of the education budget is visible and the unregulated half is largely obscured, which is the wrong way round for a parent trying to compare quotes.

What does IGCSE tutoring cost per term in Sharjah?+

At the published national bands, one weekly hour across a thirteen-week term is roughly AED 1,950 to AED 3,900 for a qualified subject tutor at AED 150 to 300, and roughly AED 2,600 to AED 5,900 for a specialist at AED 200 to 450. A diagnostic block of three or four sessions is about AED 450 to 1,200 at the mid band. Those are market figures from Unitors, TutorChase and the Bestimate survey rather than an IB Gram price list, and they apply nationally rather than specifically here.

Why should we write out the whole education budget first?+

Because an hourly rate is uninterpretable on its own and becomes clear beside the other numbers. List the school fee, transport, uniform and resources, any examination entries payable through a centre, and the tutoring you are considering, all converted to monthly figures. Two things usually become visible: tutoring at the specialist band across two subjects is a material fraction of a Sharjah fee rather than a marginal addition, and it is the only line on the list you actually decide each month.

Sharjah fees are lower than Dubai's. Should the saving go on tutoring?+

Only if the tutoring line is controlled, and that is the whole of the answer. An uncontrolled reallocation looks like a weekly arrangement in two subjects agreed without a diagnosis, running eighteen months because nothing in it has an end point, with a total that exceeds the fee saving and an outcome nobody can attribute. A controlled one is a diagnostic block, a defined term against a stated target, and a reserved final quarter. Same money, different structure, and the structure is the entire difference.

Why might a Sharjah quote be higher than a Dubai one for the same work?+

Because of the boundary. A substantial share of specialist supply in the northern emirates is Dubai-based, and a tutor travelling into Al Nahda, Al Khan or Al Majaz for a 5pm session can spend an hour each way. A three-hour commitment to deliver one hour of teaching is priced into the rate, which can push an in-home quote to or above the top of the published AED 180 to 500 band. Against that, the local tuition-centre market and nearby student supply push the lower bands down.

What happens if a Dubai-based specialist will not travel to us?+

Usually a local generalist is offered instead, and the in-home premium does not fall to match. That is the worst trade available in this market: a family paying AED 300 an hour for somebody teaching a specification they have not taught, because the Extended-tier specialist would not cross the boundary. The alternative is to accept a screen and keep the specialism, which is why IB Gram delivers to Sharjah households over live video and does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE.

Is a tuition centre group class good value here?+

For content coverage, yes, and Sharjah's centre market is comparatively well developed, particularly around Muwaileh and University City. Group rates of roughly AED 100 to 150 per pupil are easy to find, against AED 200 to 450 for one-to-one specialist work. What a group cannot do is diagnose: a session pitched to several pupils addresses the average gap rather than your child's specific pattern of lost marks. Ask whether individual timed scripts are marked between sessions; often they are not.

Should we compare monthly packages or hourly rates?+

Divide every package out before comparing anything. Packages circulating include about AED 799 a month for eight online sessions, which is near AED 100 an hour, and AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits, which is roughly AED 200 to 225 an hour. The in-home package delivers the same eight teaching hours at more than double the price, and the difference is travel. Then ask the terms: session count, marking, rollover and notice, all of which move a monthly invoice materially.

Which six things actually change the figure we are quoted?+

Scarcity of the specification, the calendar, travel, what sits inside the rate, diagnostic capability, and reputation. Only the fifth is clearly about ability: marking a timed script against the published scheme and categorising the losses is a narrower skill than subject teaching, and it is the clearest justification for paying above the qualified-teacher band. Reputation is the sixth and has no evidence behind it anywhere in this market. The other four are supply, timing, distance and contract terms.

Do examination entry costs belong in the tutoring conversation?+

They belong in the budget rather than the tutoring quote, and they catch families out. Entries are normally handled through the school for a registered candidate, but a pupil sitting a paper as a private candidate - including a November retake arranged outside their own school - may face separate charges through an approved centre. That cost lands in a specific month and is not part of any tutoring figure. Ask the examinations officer rather than assuming, and put the answer on the monthly list.

Does a tutor in Sharjah need a permit, and does it affect the rate?+

A permit, and it should not affect the rate because it is free. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is issued through MoHRE, and is granted free of charge for two years. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the smart app, website or e-services. So a provider citing licensing costs in its figure has misread its own paperwork. Individuals tutoring without a permit face fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no amounts are published.

Do you send tutors to Al Majaz, Al Nahda or Muwaileh?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; sending a tutor to a family's address is a service offered only in India. Tutoring for Sharjah families is one-to-one over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. The cost consequence is direct: the cross-boundary journey priced into the published AED 180 to 500 in-home band is not in the figure at all, and the tutor is chosen for the specification and tier rather than for which side of the Dubai line they live on.

What should we bring to the first conversation about cost?+

Two things. Your child's last marked paper, which is what decides whether the problem is four sessions or a term, and the itemised monthly education budget. With those, the conversation can be about which subject and which error category is worth paying for and what that costs against the published bands, rather than about an hourly figure in isolation. The first session is free, is one session, and requires no card details. A recommendation of no paid work is a legitimate outcome.

Put the quote beside the other numbers

Spend twenty minutes writing out the whole education budget as monthly figures: fees approved through SPEA, transport, resources, any examination entries, and the tutoring you are weighing up. Then ask the terms before the rate - session count, marking, rollover and notice - and divide any package out to an hourly figure. Finally, buy a diagnostic block rather than a term, so the money is aimed at a named error category rather than at a subject. A free trial lesson is one session with no card details required. Lessons are one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
