IGCSE Tutor near me in Jumeirah 1

A search for an IGCSE tutor near me in Jumeirah 1 is usually prompted by one mark scheme and one disappointing paper. This page is written from the syllabus up: Cambridge 0580 against Pearson 4MA1, Core against Extended, the command words that decide marks, and how past-paper practice should actually be run. IB Gram matches your child with a tutor who teaches their board and teaches it one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial lesson.

  • Matched to the board your child sits, Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel
  • Syllabus codes named, not a generic IGCSE outline

IB & IGCSE in Jumeirah 1

Start from the syllabus code, because everything else follows from it

Most IGCSE tutoring goes wrong at the first question, and the first question is not about the student. It is: which syllabus is your child entered for? A family in Jumeirah 1 searching for an IGCSE tutor near me will be offered plenty of people who teach IGCSE maths. Far fewer will ask whether that means Cambridge 0580 or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A 4MA1, and the difference is not cosmetic. From 2025, Cambridge 0580 candidates sit a non-calculator paper; Edexcel 4MA1 candidates may use a calculator on both papers. A term of revision built on the wrong assumption wastes the term.

The same fork runs through every subject. Cambridge grades IGCSE on an A* to G scale; Pearson grades International GCSE on 9 to 1. Cambridge sciences carry a practical component, either a laboratory test or an alternative-to-practical written paper; Edexcel International GCSE sciences assess practical skills inside the theory papers instead. Cambridge offers Core and Extended tiers in many subjects, which cap the available grade; Edexcel offers Foundation and Higher tiers in maths with different grade ranges. None of this is obscure, and all of it is published, but it decides what a tutor should spend ten weeks doing.

So this page is built around the content rather than around the neighbourhood. It names codes, sets out paper structures, works through the command words that mark schemes actually reward, explains how past-paper practice should be run so it produces diagnosis rather than reassurance, and covers the practical-skills question that online tutoring has to answer honestly. It also sets out the Ministry of Education equivalency rule that decides which five IGCSE subjects count when your child applies to a UAE university, because one competitor page currently publishes the wrong subject count.

On delivery, the position is plain. IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service offered only in India. For a Jumeirah 1 household that is usually an advantage rather than a compromise, because the schools along this coastal corridor split between Cambridge and Pearson entries, and a tutor chosen from a board-specific pool rather than from whoever drives down Jumeirah Beach Road is more likely to have marked the paper your child is about to sit.

One more framing point before the detail. An IGCSE grade is not a measure of how much a student knows; it is a measure of how many marks they collected under timed conditions against a published scheme. Those are different things, and the gap between them is where tutoring earns its money. A student who understands electrolysis and writes four lines when the question says 'explain' has not been let down by their knowledge.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

An IGCSE enquiry from this part of Dubai arrives at one of three stages, and the useful work differs at each. The fourth entry below matters because the tier and board chosen at 16 constrain what a student can do at 17.

LSAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary

The two years before IGCSE entry, with Checkpoint tests available in March, May and October. Nothing here appears on a certificate, which is exactly why it is the cheapest place to fix an arithmetic or algebra gap. A student who reaches Year 10 unable to rearrange a formula reliably will spend two years paying for it.

Several Jumeirah 1 and Al Safa families use Year 9 to decide between staying British through IGCSE or moving a child onto the IB continuum. The Checkpoint results are the most objective evidence available at that point, and they are worth reading properly before the decision.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE

Two years to a certificate graded A* to G, with Core and Extended tiers in many subjects and a practical or alternative-to-practical component in the sciences. Exams run in a June series and a November series, with centres allocated to one of six administrative zones and a zone-specific timetable that must be used.

Cambridge warns that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used. For a Dubai family that means checking the zone version with the school's exams officer rather than downloading whichever PDF a search returns.

4xx1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

Graded 9 to 1, available in May/June and November series, with no coursework in the main sciences and practical skills assessed through the written papers. Subject codes follow a pattern: 4MA1 for Mathematics A, 4PH1 Physics, 4CH1 Chemistry, 4BI1 Biology, 4EA1 English Language A.

Pearson published a November 2026 International GCSE timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026, and issues provisional timetables ahead of each series, so a Dubai family should always work from the live official PDF rather than from dates restated on a tutoring page.

AS/AAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

AS and A Level, the next step

Where most IGCSE students in this corridor go next if they do not move onto the IB Diploma. Subject prerequisites are set against IGCSE grades, so the tier a student is entered for in Year 10 can quietly close a Year 12 door two years before anybody notices.

For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, students submit proof of one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, alongside the five IGCSE subjects.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below is listed with the Cambridge and Pearson codes a Dubai school is most likely to have entered your child for, and with the specific place marks go. These are the entries that make up the bulk of Jumeirah 1 and Al Safa IGCSE enquiries.

Mathematics (0580 / 4MA1)

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

Cambridge 0580 Extended candidates sit a non-calculator paper and a calculator paper; Core candidates sit the shorter equivalents. Edexcel 4MA1 allows a calculator on both papers. Marks go on method not shown, premature rounding, and algebraic fractions abandoned halfway.

Physics (0625 / 4PH1)

Core and Extended · single tier

Cambridge 0625 adds a practical test or an alternative-to-practical paper; Edexcel 4PH1 folds practical skills into the theory papers. Marks go on missing units, gradients read from the wrong axes, and answers that describe a graph instead of explaining the physics.

Chemistry (0620 / 4CH1)

Core and Extended · single tier

Ionic equations, moles calculations and organic reaction conditions carry the paper. The reliable loss is state symbols and balancing under time pressure, plus conditions quoted for the wrong reaction because they were memorised as a list rather than a mechanism.

Biology (0610 / 4BI1)

Core and Extended · single tier

Command-term discipline decides the grade more than content does. A question asking students to state wants a fact; one asking them to explain wants a causal chain; one asking them to evaluate wants both sides and a judgement. Students who revise content alone plateau in the middle grades.

Coordinated and Combined Science (0654 / 0653)

Double and single award

Three sciences compressed, which makes selection the hardest part of revision. Students often prepare the biology content thoroughly and arrive at the physics calculations undercooked, because the biology felt productive and the physics did not.

English Language (0500 / 4EA1)

First Language

Directed writing and reading response, where the marks sit in audience, form and precise textual reference rather than in vocabulary. The common failure is a well-written answer that ignores the specified form, which caps it regardless of quality.

Business Studies and Economics (0450, 0455 / 4BS1, 4EC1)

Single tier

Case-study application and evaluation. A definition and a formula collect the lower marks; a judgement supported by figures from the stimulus collects the upper ones, and most students stop before the judgement.

Computer Science and ICT (0478, 0417 / 4IT1)

Single tier

Pseudocode tracing, data representation and the theory of networks. Students who can code often lose marks on exactly the trace-table questions they expect to find easy, because tracing on paper is a separate skill from writing a program that works.

Arabic (0508 / 0544)

First Language and Foreign Language

KHDA requires Arabic in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, so the stream a student sits in determines the syllabus and the realistic grade ceiling.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

IGCSE support splits cleanly by what is actually wrong. Content gaps, technique gaps and tier decisions need different work, and all three are delivered one-to-one over live video.

Syllabus audit then weekly teaching

The first lessons establish which syllabus, which tier, which papers and which topics are genuinely missing, measured against the published content list rather than against the student's impression. Weekly teaching then works through the gaps in the order the school's scheme of work will need them, so school lessons and tutoring reinforce each other rather than compete.

  • Board and syllabus code confirmed in the first lesson
  • Topic-by-topic audit against the published subject content
  • Weekly slot on Gulf Standard Time, same tutor throughout
  • Written note after each session naming the next practice task

Past-paper and mark-scheme practice

Timed questions, marked against the published mark scheme, with the student seeing exactly where the marks were awarded and where they were not. This is the work that converts understanding into grades, and it is the work students avoid because it is uncomfortable. Done properly it produces a short, repeating list of errors that can be attacked directly.

  • Questions sat under timed conditions, not discussed in the abstract
  • Marked against the official scheme, mark by mark
  • A running error log revisited every session
  • Command-word drills where the loss pattern points at technique

Tier and board decision support

Short, focused work for a family deciding between Core and Extended, or between Foundation and Higher in maths, or dealing with a mid-year school move that changes the board. The question is not which tier sounds better but which one the student can actually complete well, because an unfinished Extended paper scores less than a finished Core one.

  • Diagnostic questions from both tiers to establish the realistic ceiling
  • The grade ranges each tier makes available, set out plainly
  • Entry-deadline implications explained before the decision
  • No pressure towards the higher tier for its own sake

Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel: find out before you buy anything

Dubai schools entering students for an international GCSE choose between Cambridge International and Pearson Edexcel, and some split by subject, entering Cambridge sciences and Edexcel mathematics or the reverse. The school's exams officer knows; the student frequently does not. Ask for the board and the five-character syllabus code per subject, and write them down, because every sensible decision after this one depends on them.

The structural differences are real. Cambridge grades IGCSE A* to G and Pearson grades International GCSE 9 to 1, so comparing a cousin's result across boards is comparing two scales. Cambridge sciences carry a separate practical assessment, either a laboratory test or an alternative-to-practical written paper; Pearson International GCSE sciences assess practical understanding inside the theory papers. In mathematics, Cambridge 0580 candidates face a non-calculator paper from 2025 while Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator on both papers, which changes what arithmetic fluency is worth.

Series availability differs too. Cambridge runs a June series and a November series, and in the UAE those are the only two a candidate can enter, because the February and March series is offered in India only. Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests do run in March, May and October, but a Checkpoint is a lower-secondary diagnostic rather than an IGCSE sitting. Pearson International GCSE runs in May/June and November. The practical consequence for a Jumeirah 1 family is that a retake window exists on either board within the same academic year, but the entry deadlines sit months before the papers, and missing one costs a whole series rather than a few weeks.

The table below pairs the codes most Jumeirah 1 students are entered for. Use it to check what the school has told you, not as a substitute for asking them.

Core against Extended, and the grade ceiling nobody mentions

Cambridge offers Core and Extended tiers in a number of IGCSE subjects, and the tier a student is entered for sets the highest grade available before the exam is sat. This is the single most consequential administrative decision in Year 10, and it is frequently made on the basis of a mock result taken when half the syllabus had not been taught. A Core entry protects a student who would otherwise fail; it also removes the top grades from reach, which closes some A Level and Diploma doors.

The honest version of the decision is arithmetic rather than ambition. An Extended paper is longer, carries harder questions and demands more complete method. A student who can attempt eighty per cent of an Extended paper competently will usually do better there than on Core. A student who is still shaky on the Core content will produce an Extended script with large blank spaces, and blank spaces score nothing. The question to ask is not which tier sounds better but which paper the student can finish.

Pearson International GCSE handles this differently, with single-tier entry in the sciences and Foundation and Higher tiers in mathematics carrying different grade ranges. So a family moving a child between a Cambridge school and a Pearson school mid-course is not only changing syllabus content but changing whether the tier question exists at all. That is a specific, checkable thing to raise with the new school's exams officer in the first week rather than the first term.

The table sets out what each tier actually changes. The last column is the one parents usually want: what it means for how many weeks of support a student realistically needs.

03

The command words that actually decide the mark

A mark scheme does not reward knowing things. It rewards producing the specific response the command word asks for, in the number of marks available. This is the most reliable source of recoverable marks in the whole IGCSE, and it is the part of the course least likely to be taught deliberately, because teachers under time pressure prioritise content coverage. A student who loses four marks a paper to command-word errors is losing most of a grade to something fixable in three weeks.

The pattern is consistent across subjects. State and give want a fact with no justification and no padding. Describe wants what happens, in order, without explanation. Explain wants a causal chain with because or therefore doing real work in it. Compare wants both items addressed in the same sentence rather than in separate paragraphs. Evaluate wants both sides and then a judgement, and the judgement is where the final marks sit. Calculate wants working, because method marks survive an arithmetic slip and a bare wrong answer does not.

The diagnostic habit worth building is counting. If a question offers four marks, four distinct scoring points are expected, and a student who has written two sentences has probably collected two marks regardless of how good the sentences are. Teaching a student to read the mark allocation as an instruction about length is a ten-minute intervention that pays for itself in the first mock.

The table gives the loss pattern by command word. A tutor working through marked past papers will see which rows a particular student keeps landing on, and that list is usually short.

COMMAND WORDS, WHAT THE SCHEME WANTS, AND THE USUAL ERROR
Command wordWhat the mark scheme wantsWhat students typically writeFix

Evaluate / DiscussBoth sides plus a supported judgementBoth sides and no judgementFinish with a sentence that decides, using evidence already given

04

Where marks go in each subject, specifically

In mathematics the recurring losses are premature rounding, method abandoned mid-question, and the non-calculator paper treated as a calculator paper without the calculator. Cambridge 0580 Extended candidates sitting a non-calculator paper from 2025 need genuine arithmetic fluency, including fraction and surd work, and students who have spent two years with a calculator in hand find that out late. Edexcel 4MA1 candidates face different pressure: a calculator on both papers raises the expectation of multi-step modelling questions.

In the sciences the losses cluster around units, significant figures and the gap between describing and explaining. A physics candidate who reads a gradient without stating its units has done the hard part and dropped the mark. A chemistry candidate who writes an unbalanced ionic equation or omits state symbols loses marks that have nothing to do with understanding the reaction. A biology candidate who writes a beautiful paragraph in answer to a two-mark 'state' question has spent five minutes buying nothing.

In English the losses are structural. Directed-writing tasks specify a form, an audience and a purpose, and a response in the wrong form is capped however well written it is. Reading-response questions want precise textual reference, which means short quotations used as evidence rather than long quotations used as decoration. In business and economics the ceiling is almost always the missing judgement: a student who sets out advantages and disadvantages and then stops has written the first two thirds of a full-mark answer.

These are patterns, not predictions. The point of marking real scripts against real schemes is to find out which of them applies to your child, because the remedy for one is useless against another.

05

How past-paper work should actually be run

Most past-paper practice is wasted because it is done in the wrong order. A student works through a paper with the mark scheme open, feels broadly fine about it, and learns nothing. The sequence that produces information is: sit the questions under time, close everything, mark against the published scheme, record the error type rather than the topic, and only then go back and teach the gap. Marking before teaching is what makes the practice diagnostic.

Timing deserves separate attention. Running out of time is not a content problem and cannot be fixed by revising content, but it is routinely treated that way. The fix is per-question pacing practice: give a student a four-mark question and five minutes, then three, then two, until the pace is internal. Students who have never been timed on single questions discover in the exam hall that their reading speed is the binding constraint.

The third element is the error log. A single sheet, one line per recurring mistake, revisited at the start of every session. It will contain five to eight entries, not fifty, and it will be remarkably stable. When the same entry stops appearing for three consecutive sessions it can be struck out, and that is a far better progress measure than a percentage on a paper, because the paper's difficulty varies and the error pattern does not.

One caution. Past papers, mark schemes and syllabus documents belong to Cambridge and Pearson, and the right way to use them is through the school or the board's own published materials. We reference and point to official sources rather than reproducing or supplying them, which is both a copyright matter and a reason to make sure your child is working from the version their series actually uses.

06

Practical science assessment when the tutoring is online

This is the honest difficulty with online science tutoring, and it deserves a direct answer rather than a reassurance. Cambridge IGCSE sciences carry a practical component: candidates sit either a laboratory practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper, and which one depends on what the centre offers. Pearson International GCSE sciences assess practical understanding inside the written papers instead. In neither case does a tutor on video run an experiment with your child.

What the assessment actually tests, though, is largely written. The alternative-to-practical paper asks candidates to read instruments, tabulate results, plot and interpret graphs, identify variables, spot sources of error and suggest improvements. Every one of those is a paper skill, and every one of them is teachable over a shared screen using real data sets. Students who have done the experiments in school and never practised writing up the analysis lose marks in exactly this component.

Where the laboratory test applies, the school's own practical programme is the irreplaceable part, and a tutor's job is to make sure the student understands what they did and why, so that the write-up and the interpretation hold up. A tutor who claims to substitute for school laboratory work is overselling. A tutor who takes a student's own results table and shows them why their uncertainty treatment lost two marks is doing the part that is actually missing.

The practical question a parent should ask is therefore narrow: which component is my child entered for, and are we working on the skills that component measures? The answer is in the syllabus, and it changes what ten weeks of tutoring should contain.

07

The five subjects that count for UAE Ministry of Education equivalency

Families in Dubai whose children may apply to a UAE university or need a certificate attested run into equivalency, and the British-track rule is specific. Students must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, and must submit proof of either one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade of no less than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects.

That exclusion is the part most commonly got wrong. One ranking competitor page states that UAE candidates must take six IGCSE subjects; the sourced rule is five accredited subjects, with Arabic and Islamic education sitting outside that count. For a student choosing options in Year 9, the difference decides whether the timetable has room for an extra subject. Check it against the Ministry's own guidance before acting on any version of it, including this one.

For completeness, the American track works differently: English proficiency is evidenced by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test. No IB points threshold has been published on an official source we could read, so any page quoting one should be treated with scepticism until it is checked on the Ministry's own site.

IB Gram does not perform, submit or guarantee equivalency or attestation. It is a regulatory process run by the authorities, and tutoring is not a requirement for it. The reason it appears on this page at all is that the five-subject rule changes which IGCSE subjects a student should protect in Year 11, and that is a tutoring decision.

What a tutor may not do, and how a Jumeirah 1 week is actually scheduled

  • Confirm the board and syllabus code with the school's exams officer first
  • Coursework support is teaching and feedback on the student's own work only
  • No regulator approval is claimed, because none is held
  • Weekly slot placed after the Beach Road school-run window and held through holidays

Two practical matters to close on. The first is boundaries. Some IGCSE subjects carry coursework or controlled assessment, and where they do, the work is assessed as the student's own. A tutor may teach the content, explain the assessment criteria, question a weak argument and show a student how to reference properly. A tutor may not supply text that becomes part of a submitted piece. The test is whether every word on the page was generated by the student, and this market contains operators who fail that test for money.

Nor should any tutoring provider claim regulatory approval it does not hold. KHDA oversees the quality of private education in Dubai and issues an Educational Services Permit to training institutes with premises; individual private tutoring runs on the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years. IB Gram holds no regulator's approval and does not describe itself as approved, licensed or accredited by one. Ask any provider who does to show the number.

The second matter is the week itself. A Jumeirah 1 family's realistic constraint is the afternoon: the school-gate congestion on Al Wasl Road and Jumeirah Beach Road runs well past 15:00, and students living on Pearl Jumeira or coming back from inland schools arrive home later than the map suggests. Because lessons are delivered over video, a slot at 18:30 or 19:30 starts at that minute and does not depend on anybody completing a journey. The slot holds through school holidays, shifts for travel, and moves to a post-Iftar time during Ramadan rather than being cancelled.

If you are weighing areas as part of a school decision, the companion pages for Dubai Marina, JBR, JLT, Emirates Hills, The Springs, The Meadows, The Lakes and The Greens cover the same ground for those catchments, and the Jumeirah 1 area page sets out the wider local picture.

Where we tutor

Where IGCSE students near Jumeirah 1 are actually entered

Board entry patterns vary school by school rather than area by area, which is why a proximity search is a poor guide. These are the areas that surround Jumeirah 1, with what tends to be true of their IGCSE cohorts.

Al Safa

The secondary cluster for this corridor and the source of most Year 10 and Year 11 enquiries from Jumeirah 1 households. British-curriculum entries dominate, and families here are often comparing Cambridge and Pearson results across siblings at different schools.

Jumeirah 2 and 3

Continuing along Beach Road with the same villa stock. Students travel inland or south-west for secondary, so the practical constraint on tutoring is the afternoon return journey rather than anything about board or syllabus.

Umm Suqeim

Home to several all-through British schools, which means a Year 11 cohort large enough to run both tiers in maths. That matters: a school with two tiers can move a borderline student, and a school with one cannot.

Al Sufouh

A short drive west along Al Sufouh Road, with selective British secondary provision. Entry grades here are high enough that tutoring requests are usually about converting a grade 7 into a 9 rather than about securing a pass.

Al Wasl

Apartments and townhouses behind Al Wasl Road, with a more mobile resident population. Mid-year arrivals are common, and a student joining a Year 11 class in January needs the syllabus audit done before anything else.

City Walk

Dense low-rise apartments with a younger profile, so most enquiries are Lower Secondary rather than IGCSE. The useful work here is arithmetic and algebra fluency before Year 10 makes it expensive.

Pearl Jumeira and La Mer

Coastal developments off Jumeirah 1 with single-point access. Scheduling, not syllabus, is the local constraint, and a video lesson at a fixed time removes it entirely.

School ecosystem

Jumeirah and Al Safa British-curriculum schools

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the board, the code and the last paper

The most useful first message names the school, the subject, whether it is Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, the syllabus code if you have it, and what the last assessment actually scored. That is enough to match a tutor who has taught that specification rather than the subject in general.

  2. 02

    Tutor matched to the specification

We look for somebody who has taught and marked that syllabus, then at which of their slots fits your evening. Common subjects resolve in a few working days; a thinly taught option takes longer and we say so at enquiry rather than afterwards.

Free trial lesson, used for diagnosis

One lesson, at a time you choose, with no charge and no card details taken. A good trial produces a syllabus audit and a short written list of what is actually missing, not a performance. You should be able to read it and recognise your child.

  4. 04

Weekly slot plus an error log

The lesson becomes a standing appointment on Gulf Standard Time. Each session ends with a note naming what was covered and the next practice task, and the recurring error log is reviewed at the start of every lesson so progress is visible between reports.

  5. 05

Rebuild the plan around the series

Entry deadlines sit months before the papers, so the plan is set against your child's actual series and the school's mock calendar. Intensity rises before mocks and before the final entry date, and drops when coursework deadlines take over the week.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to a syllabus, not to a subject

Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different exams with different calculator rules and different grade scales. The tutor is chosen for the one your child actually sits, which is the question most proximity searches never ask.

Mark schemes, not impressions

Work is marked against the published scheme, mark by mark, so a student sees where the marks were awarded. That produces a short error log that can be attacked directly, rather than a percentage that tells nobody anything useful.

Tier decisions taken on evidence

Core or Extended, Foundation or Higher: the decision is settled with diagnostic questions from both tiers rather than with ambition. An unfinished Extended paper scores less than a completed Core one, and the grade ceiling is explained before the entry is made.

Official sources referenced, not reproduced

Syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes belong to Cambridge and Pearson. We point to the official versions and work from what the school provides, rather than supplying copies, which also means your child works from the right version for their series.

No regulator claims, no outcome promises

IB Gram holds no KHDA, MoE, Cambridge or Pearson approval and says so. No tutor can guarantee a grade, and any page that offers one is selling something it cannot deliver. What is reasonable is a diagnosis, a plan with dates and a written record.

Scheduled for a Jumeirah 1 evening

Sessions sit after the Al Wasl Road and Beach Road congestion window, start on the minute because nobody is driving, hold through school holidays and move to post-Iftar timings during Ramadan instead of being cancelled.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jumeirah 1: your questions answered

How do I find out whether my child sits Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel IGCSE?+

Ask the school's exams officer for the board and the syllabus code for each subject, and write them down. Students often do not know, and the two boards differ in ways that change revision entirely: Cambridge grades A* to G and Pearson grades 9 to 1, Cambridge 0580 includes a non-calculator paper from 2025 while Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator on both papers, and the sciences handle practical assessment differently. Some Dubai schools split by subject, entering Cambridge sciences and Edexcel mathematics, so one answer for the whole timetable may not exist.

Does an IGCSE tutor near me in Jumeirah 1 need to teach the same board as the school?+

Yes, and this matters more than distance. A tutor who has taught Cambridge 0620 Chemistry knows the practical component and the question styles that go with it; a tutor who has taught Pearson 4CH1 knows a different paper structure. Preparing a student against the wrong specification produces confident revision and a disappointing result. Because IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video, the pool is selected on specification experience rather than on who can reach a Jumeirah 1 address, which is what makes board-specific matching possible at all.

What is the real difference between a Core and an Extended entry?+

The tier sets the highest grade available before the paper is sat. Core covers the shared core content with shorter, more structured papers and makes only the lower part of the grade scale reachable. Extended adds the extended content, runs longer papers with more multi-step questions, and makes the top grades available. The decision should be arithmetic rather than aspirational: a student who can attempt most of an Extended paper competently will usually score better there, while one still shaky on core content will hand in a script with blank spaces.

Which command words cost my child the most marks?+

Usually explain, evaluate and compare. Explain wants a causal chain with each link stated, and students write a description with the word because attached. Evaluate wants both sides plus a supported judgement, and students stop before the judgement, which is where the final marks sit. Compare wants both items addressed against the same criterion in the same sentence, not two separate paragraphs. The diagnostic habit that fixes all three is reading the mark allocation as an instruction about how many distinct scoring points to produce.

Is the Cambridge non-calculator maths paper a real change for my child?+

It is, and it catches students who have had a calculator in hand since Year 7. From 2025, Cambridge 0580 candidates sit a non-calculator paper alongside the calculator one, which puts genuine weight on fraction work, indices, surds and mental estimation. Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 candidates face the opposite pressure: a calculator on both papers raises the expectation of longer multi-step modelling questions. Either way, the first fortnight of useful tutoring is arithmetic fluency drills, which feels unglamorous and recovers marks faster than anything else available.

What is the right order of operations for working through a past paper?+

Sit the questions under time with everything closed, then mark against the published scheme, then record the type of error rather than the topic, and only then go back and teach the gap. Marking before teaching is what makes the practice diagnostic. Most students do the reverse, work through a paper with the scheme open, feel broadly fine and learn nothing. Pair that with per-question timing practice, because running out of time is not a content problem and cannot be fixed by revising more content.

Can practical science skills be taught if lessons are online?+

Partly, and the honest answer depends on the component. The Cambridge alternative-to-practical paper tests reading instruments, tabulating results, plotting and interpreting graphs, identifying variables and suggesting improvements, and all of that is paper work that transfers perfectly to a shared screen with real data sets. Where a laboratory practical test applies, the school's own practical programme is irreplaceable, and a tutor's job is to make sure the student can analyse and write up what they did. No tutor on video substitutes for a school laboratory.

How many IGCSE subjects count towards UAE equivalency, and are Arabic and Islamic education included?+

The sourced rule is five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus proof of one accredited A Level subject at E or two AS Level subjects at E. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. One ranking competitor page states that six subjects are needed, which does not match the published guidance. Check the current rule against the Ministry of Education's own material before acting on any version of it, including this one.

When are IGCSE exams held, and how far ahead is the entry deadline?+

Cambridge runs a June series and a November series, with Checkpoint tests in March, May and October for lower secondary. There is no spring IGCSE sitting here: the February and March series is offered in India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November, and its published November 2026 timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026 with results reaching students in the new year. Entry deadlines sit months before the papers on both boards, Cambridge closing June entries in the spring and November entries over the summer. Always work from the live official timetable for your centre's zone, because Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones.

My child joined a Dubai school mid-year and the board changed. What now?+

Do a syllabus audit in the first fortnight, before anything else. A board change alters content coverage, tiering, grade scale and sometimes the practical component, and the topics taught in a different order elsewhere leave gaps that nobody has flagged. Map the new specification's content list against what your child has actually been taught, mark the unmatched items, and work through them in the order the new school's scheme of work will need them. Mid-year arrivals are common in Al Wasl and City Walk, and this audit is what makes the first term survivable.

Is it too late to start tutoring if the exams are three months away?+

Not too late to matter, but the plan has to change. Three months is enough to fix technique, command-word discipline, timing and a short list of high-frequency topics, and that can move a grade. It is not enough to teach two years of missing content, and any provider implying otherwise is selling something. The first lessons should therefore be spent identifying the few topics that appear most often in the paper and are most recoverable, and then drilling them under timed conditions rather than attempting full syllabus coverage.

What may a tutor do with IGCSE coursework or a controlled assessment?+

Teach the content, explain what the assessment criteria ask for, question reasoning that does not hold and show the student how to reference properly. A tutor may not supply text that becomes part of a submitted piece, or return a draft rewritten into a finished state. The test is whether every word on the page was generated by the student. Providers in this market do sell finished work, and a student who submits it risks a malpractice finding, so the boundary is worth stating to any tutor before the first lesson.

Do you cover both tiers of maths, and can you help us decide?+

Yes, and the decision is settled with evidence rather than opinion. Two lessons with diagnostic questions drawn from both tiers show whether a student completes core-level questions reliably and can attempt harder ones, which is the real signal. We set out the grade range each tier makes available and the progression consequences for Year 12, then leave the entry decision to the family and the school, since the school submits it. We will not push a higher tier for its own sake.

How are the AED rates for IGCSE tutoring in Dubai set, and what do families pay?+

Published market figures as at October 2026 put qualified online subject tutors at AED 150-300 an hour, with one provider advertising IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, in-home one-to-one at AED 180-500 once travel is included, and specialist exam-year support at AED 200-450 and above. Budget online options are advertised from around AED 45. Those are other providers' published rates with their own dating, not an IB Gram price list; our arrangement begins with a free trial lesson at a time you choose, with no card taken.

Name the syllabus, then start the work

If you have been looking for an IGCSE tutor near me in Jumeirah 1, the fastest useful step is to get the board and the syllabus code from your child's exams officer and send them with the last paper your child sat. We will match a tutor who has taught that specification, propose an evening slot that survives the Beach Road school run, and give you a free trial lesson at a time you choose with no card details taken. Lessons are one-to-one and online on Gulf Standard Time. If a subject is thinly taught and the match will take longer, we will tell you at enquiry rather than later.
