IGCSE Home Tutor in Jumeirah 1

An IGCSE home tutor in Jumeirah 1 is usually hired on a grade and should be hired on a diagnosis. A 5 in Business Studies and a 5 in Physics are losing marks in completely different places, and only the marked paper says where. This page works through the syllabus codes, the command words, the specific mark-scheme trap in each subject and a past-paper method that teaches rather than measures. IB Gram delivers it one-to-one over live video.

  • Diagnosis from your child's own marked paper, not from the grade
  • Cambridge and Pearson syllabus codes taught to their published command words
  • Written work marked between sessions with the mark scheme shown
  • One free trial lesson, one subject, before any paid block is booked

IB & IGCSE in Jumeirah 1

A grade is not a diagnosis, and the paper is

Most tutoring in Dubai is bought on a grade. A report says 5 in Business Studies, a parent in Jumeirah 1 searches for a tutor, and a term of weekly lessons begins with somebody re-teaching the topic list. It often produces no movement at all, and the reason is that a grade describes an outcome rather than a cause. Two students with the same 5 can be losing marks in entirely unrelated places: one writes knowledge where the question asked for application, the other knows the content and never reaches the evaluation sentence that the top band requires.

The marked paper tells you which. Every Cambridge and Pearson mark scheme is explicit about what earns a mark, and the pattern of losses across a paper is readable in twenty minutes by somebody who knows the syllabus. That is the work a first session should do, and it is the difference between buying teaching and buying a repair. A tutor who starts at chapter one has decided not to look, and a term of that costs a family both the money and the window in which the problem was still cheap to fix.

This page is written from the subject outwards rather than from the location inwards, because the subject is what actually varies. It lists the syllabus codes Jumeirah 1 families ask about, names the highest-yield mark-scheme trap in each, works through the command words that decide marks, sets out the assessment structure behind each grade, and gives a past-paper protocol that teaches instead of simply measuring. The cost section leads with the question that actually determines value: whether the hour includes marking your child's written work.

On delivery, the position is stated plainly. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and nothing here will promise a tutor at a UAE address. Lessons for Jumeirah 1 families are one-to-one over live video, with the student's own marked paper on screen, the mark scheme beside it and written work annotated between sessions. For subject work specifically that is an advantage rather than a compromise, because the document being discussed is the document both people are looking at.

Jumeirah 1 itself shapes only the timing. The district runs inland from Jumeirah Beach Road through Al Bada'a and Al Hudaiba, with Pearl Jumeira and La Mer on the water and City Walk behind, and most secondary students here commute to the Al Safa, Al Wasl or Umm Suqeim schools. Beach Road in the afternoon is slower than its distance suggests, which pushes a realistic weekday start past 16:45 for most of the district. Everything else on this page is about the syllabus.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

IGCSE sits at the end of one sequence and the start of another, and the subject work that matters depends on which. These are the programmes Jumeirah 1 families ask about, with what each one demands in terms of written technique.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International GCSE, Years 10 and 11

Typically eight to ten subjects, each with its own syllabus code, component structure and command-word list. The two-year course is taught topic by topic and examined by question type, which is why students who know the content can still underperform. Tiering applies in some subjects at Cambridge, where Core and Extended report different grade ranges, and at Pearson, where Foundation and Higher do the same.

In Dubai the entry is made by the school as a Cambridge or Pearson centre, and Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones with its own timetable version. Cambridge states that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used, so the exams officer is the person to ask for the zone, the codes and the current tier.

A LevelAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level, Years 12 and 13

The most common destination for Jumeirah 1 IGCSE students. A Level subjects assume specific IGCSE fluencies rather than general ability: algebraic manipulation for sciences and maths, source evaluation for History, evaluative writing for Business and Economics. Students who reached a good IGCSE grade through recall rather than technique meet the gap in the first term, not the first year.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November each year, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026. A November entry is usually a retake or an early entry and compresses revision into the first half of the autumn term, which for a Year 12 student collides with new A Level content.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1-DP2

IB Diploma Programme

The other post-16 route in this part of Dubai, and the one where IGCSE written technique transfers most directly. Diploma papers are built on precise command terms and criterion-marked internal assessments, so a student who learned to read a command word at 16 arrives with a real advantage. Students who learned to write everything they know arrive with a habit to unlearn.

No IB Diploma points figure for UAE Ministry of Education equivalency is published that this page can cite, so none appears here. The British-track rule is sourced and specific: five accredited IGCSE or GCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic Education, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

Some Jumeirah 1 students arrive at an IGCSE entry from MYP, having been assessed against criteria out of eight rather than against mark schemes. The transition is a technique change rather than a content gap: timed writing, command words and the habit of answering the question asked rather than the topic recognised all have to be learned deliberately.

MYP provision reachable from this district sits mainly in Al Safa, Umm Al Sheif and the Al Barsha campuses. Some of those schools enter MYP students for Cambridge papers alongside criterion assessment, most often Cambridge IGCSE International Mathematics 0607, so a student can be assessed two ways in the same year.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each IGCSE subject fails in its own way. These are the courses Jumeirah 1 families ask for, with the content that carries the marks and the place the marks usually go.

Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500 and 0990

Single tier

A reading paper with comprehension, summary and directed writing, and a writing paper with directed writing and composition. Summary marks are lost to lifted phrasing rather than to misunderstanding, and directed writing is lost to ignoring the stated audience and form. Both are technique, and both move quickly with marked practice.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE English Language A 4EA1

Single tier, 9-1

A non-fiction and transactional writing component plus a poetry and prose component, with a coursework alternative at some centres. The transactional writing task is where structure earns marks: students who plan a shape score above students who write fluently without one, and that is the cheapest improvement in the subject.

Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450

Single tier

Two papers behind four assessment objectives: knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation. Nearly all avoidable loss sits in application and evaluation. Students describe a concept correctly and never attach it to the case-study business, or they analyse two options and never recommend one with a reason. Both are fixable in three marked pieces.

Cambridge IGCSE Economics 0455

Single tier

A multiple-choice paper and a structured paper carrying the larger share. Diagrams lose marks when axes are unlabelled or curves shift without explanation, and the extended evaluation questions lose marks when a student lists arguments without weighing them. Diagram discipline plus one evaluative sentence structure is most of the gap.

Cambridge IGCSE Information and Communication Technology 0417

Single tier

A theory paper plus practical papers covering document production, data manipulation, presentations, spreadsheets and website authoring. The practical papers are marked against precise outputs, so a student loses marks for formatting that looks fine and does not match the brief. Screen-shared practice is exactly the right format for this.

Cambridge IGCSE Geography 0460

Single tier

A geographical themes paper, a skills paper, and either coursework or the alternative-to-coursework paper. The skills paper is the most recoverable component in the subject: map reading, cross-sections, graph interpretation and data response are all teachable procedures. Case-study answers lose marks when places are named without specific detail.

Cambridge IGCSE History 0470

Single tier

Structured questions, a source-based paper, and either coursework or an alternative depth-study paper. The source paper is where grades are made and lost. Students retell the source instead of using it as evidence, and never address provenance, purpose or the limits of what it can show. That is a learnable routine rather than a talent.

Cambridge IGCSE French 0520 and modern languages

Single tier

Four components covering listening, reading, writing and speaking, each carrying a quarter of the grade. Speaking is the component families most often leave to chance because it feels unteachable at a distance; it is in fact the most rehearsable, since the task types are stable and timed practice with feedback moves it fast.

Cambridge IGCSE Computer Science 0478

Single tier

A theory paper covering data representation, networks, hardware and security, and a paper on algorithms, programming and logic. Pseudocode answers lose marks for undeclared variables and untraced loops. Trace tables are the single highest-yield routine in the subject and almost nobody practises them deliberately.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 and Pearson 4MA1

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

Cambridge now examines a non-calculator paper at both tiers, which put arithmetic fluency, surds and exact values back at the centre of revision. Pearson awards method marks generously, so working written out recovers marks that mental calculation throws away silently. The two boards reward different habits.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Subject work responds to a particular rhythm: teach a technique, practise it on a real question, mark it, correct it, test it again. These are the arrangements that deliver that rhythm, all one-to-one over live video.

One subject, one weakness, six weeks

A six-week block on a single subject aimed at the specific loss the marked paper showed: evaluation sentences in Business, source provenance in History, the skills paper in Geography, trace tables in Computer Science. It ends with a timed piece on the same question type so the movement is visible. Most Jumeirah 1 families buy this rather than open-ended weekly tuition.

  • Target chosen from the marked paper, not from the grade
  • One question type practised until it is reliable
  • Ends with a timed piece on the same type
  • Six weeks, with a defined finish rather than a rolling commitment

Two subjects, alternating weeks

A single weekly slot that alternates between two subjects, with written work set in both and marked between sessions. It suits students with two borderline subjects rather than one serious one, and it keeps the commitment to one hour a week in a district where the school run already eats the late afternoon.

  • One slot, two subjects, alternating fortnightly
  • Written work set in both and marked each time
  • Suits two borderline grades rather than one weak subject
  • Keeps the weekly commitment to a single hour

Timed-paper block before the series

Eight weeks of whole papers under examination conditions, marked against the published mark scheme, with the corrections taught in the following session. This is the format that separates a student who knows the content from one who can produce it in the time allowed, and the second is what the grade measures.

  • Whole papers to time, not question sets
  • Marked against the published mark scheme, with band reasoning explained
  • Corrections taught in the next session rather than listed
  • Shifts to a post-Iftar slot during Ramadan rather than pausing

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Jumeirah 1

01

Reading a marked paper before buying a single hour

  • Sort lost marks into content, application, command word and time
  • Three of those four piles are not fixed by more teaching
  • Business and Economics losses are usually application and evaluation
  • Send the diagnosis with the enquiry and see who engages with it

The cheapest hour in IGCSE tutoring is the one nobody charges for: sitting down with your child's most recent marked paper and sorting the lost marks into four piles. Content the student did not know. Content they knew and did not apply. Marks lost to the command word, where the answer was good and answered a different question. And marks lost to time, where the final questions are blank or rushed. Those four piles need four different interventions, and three of them are not more teaching.

Parents are often surprised by the result. A student with a 5 in Business Studies frequently has almost no content gap at all. The knowledge marks are there, and the losses sit in application, where a correct definition was never attached to the case-study business, and in evaluation, where two options were analysed and neither was recommended with a reason. That is a writing routine, learnable in three marked pieces, and no amount of revising the syllabus touches it.

The same exercise in a science produces a different answer. There the losses usually sit in calculation fluency and in practical reasoning: no working shown, rounding mid-calculation, units omitted, generic safety precautions, improvements suggested that do not address the error the student identified. In History the losses sit in the source paper, where a student retells the content of a source instead of using it as evidence. In Geography they sit in the skills paper, which is procedural and therefore the fastest to repair.

Do this before you contact anybody, and send what you find with the enquiry. It changes the conversation from a general one about a subject to a specific one about a question type, and it is the single best filter for a tutor. Somebody who responds to the detail is worth a trial lesson. Somebody who responds with a package and a promise about outcomes has not read it.

02

The subject-by-subject trap, with syllabus codes

Every IGCSE subject has one or two places where most of the recoverable marks sit. Experienced teachers know them and name them immediately; a general tutor works through the textbook and arrives at them by accident in March. The table below is that list, written so a parent can check it against their own child's paper without any subject knowledge at all.

Read it as a shortlist of things to ask about rather than as a diagnosis. If your child takes Cambridge IGCSE History 0470 and the source paper mark is well below the structured-questions mark, the trap in the table is almost certainly the problem. If both marks are low, the issue is content and the plan is different. The point of naming the trap is to make the first two sessions targeted rather than exploratory.

Several entries are worth highlighting because they are so frequently missed. Trace tables in Computer Science 0478 are the highest-yield routine in that subject and are almost never practised deliberately. The Geography skills paper is entirely procedural and recoverable in weeks. ICT practical papers are marked against precise outputs, so work that looks correct and does not match the brief scores nothing. And in modern languages the speaking component is more rehearsable than any other part of the course, because the task types are stable.

What all of these have in common is that they are routines rather than knowledge. A routine can be taught, practised and made reliable inside a six-week block, which is why a targeted block so often outperforms a year of general support. It is also why the marked paper matters more than the report: the report tells you there is a problem, and the paper tells you which routine is missing.

Command words are the mark scheme, not a writing style

Cambridge publishes a command-word list in every syllabus and Pearson sets out assessment objectives for every paper. Students treat these as instructions about tone. They are instructions about structure, and getting one wrong costs the whole question however good the content is. A student who explains when the paper said describe has written something that cannot be credited, and the mark scheme is not being awkward: describe and explain ask for different things and are worth different marks.

The habit this produces is the most expensive one in IGCSE. Under pressure a student reads the topic rather than the instruction, recognises the territory, and writes everything they know about it. In a four-mark question that scores two. In an eight-mark evaluation it scores in the bottom band, because the band descriptor requires weighing and the answer only lists. Both students then conclude that they are bad at the subject, which is not what happened.

The fix is mechanical and fast. Highlight the command word before writing anything. Say out loud what that word requires. Then write to that shape. Three weeks of that, applied to real past-paper questions and marked against the real mark scheme, moves students who looked stuck. It is also the single most transferable thing in IGCSE, because the same discipline is worth marks in every written subject and again in the Diploma or at A Level.

The table below covers the command words that cost the most across the subjects in this district. The third column is what students actually write, taken from the patterns teachers report most often. Read it alongside your child's marked paper and you will usually recognise at least two rows immediately.

The assessment structure behind each grade

Revision plans fail when they are built around topics and the grade is built around components. A student who revises Business Studies content evenly across both papers has ignored the fact that the marks are distributed across four assessment objectives, and that two of those objectives are writing routines rather than content. A student revising Geography evenly has ignored that one whole paper is skills, which is procedural and recoverable, while another rests on case-study detail that takes longer to build.

The table sets out the component structure of the subjects this district asks about most. Where coursework and an alternative paper both exist, the school chooses, and that choice changes what a tutor may legitimately do: coursework is assessed work the student must produce themselves, while an alternative paper is examined and can be practised freely. Knowing which route your child's centre entered is a question for the exams officer.

Two structural facts deserve attention. First, several subjects place a large share of the grade in one component, so a weakness there has an outsized effect on the final grade. Second, coursework routes are usually completed well before the written papers, which means the time to help with them is a year earlier than most families start thinking about tutoring at all.

Entry deadlines sit behind all of it, and the series comes first. Cambridge runs IGCSE in a June series and a November series, and those two are the ones UAE centres sit; the February/March series is offered to India only, so dates found through a general search may belong to a series your child will never take. Final entries are agreed between Cambridge and the centre months before the first paper, and the tier is part of that entry rather than part of the revision. Pearson ran its November 2026 International GCSE timetable from late October to 19 November 2026, published June 2026 results to centres on 19 August and to students on 20 August 2026, and issues provisional timetables for later series that may be revised.

A past paper that teaches, instead of one that only measures

Past papers are the most used and least well used resource in IGCSE. The default pattern is to complete a paper, check the answers, note the score and move to the next one. That measures a student repeatedly and teaches them almost nothing, which is why a child can finish twelve past papers and sit at the same grade. The paper only becomes teaching when the marking is done properly and the corrections are worked, which takes longer than the paper itself.

The protocol below is what a working session should do with a paper. The part families skip is step four. Writing a corrected answer to the same question, after seeing the mark scheme, is where the learning happens, and it is the step a student will never do unsupervised because it feels like repeating work already finished. It is the opposite of repetition: the first attempt revealed the gap and the second closes it.

Marking deserves its own note. A student marking their own paper awards marks for intention, because they know what they meant. The mark scheme awards marks for what is on the page. That gap is where most of the self-assessment error in Year 11 lives, and it is the single strongest argument for having written work marked by somebody else. If a tutoring arrangement does not include marking between sessions, a large part of the method is missing.

One constraint worth stating. Official syllabuses, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson. We work from them in sessions and point families to the boards' own pages, and we do not host or supply their documents. Any provider offering a downloadable archive of papers and mark schemes is doing something it should not, which is a reasonable signal about everything else it does.

06

Extended writing: the questions worth six marks and more

  • Band-marked questions reward shape as much as content
  • Claim, mechanism, specific support, counter-consideration, judgement
  • A judgement needs a stated criterion, not the phrase it depends
  • Science extended answers want a chain of reasoning, not a list of facts

Every written IGCSE subject has a long question at the end, and it is where grades separate. Six marks in a science, eight in Economics, twelve in some Business and Geography papers. These are marked against band descriptors rather than point by point, which means a correct answer in the wrong shape sits in the bottom band while a thinner answer in the right shape sits in the top one. Students find that unfair until they see two answers side by side.

The band descriptors reward three things consistently. Linked reasoning, where each point follows from the last rather than sitting beside it. Specific support, where a named example, figure or case-study detail is attached to a claim. And, in evaluative questions, a judgement with a stated basis, which means saying which consideration matters most and why rather than concluding that it depends.

The structure that satisfies all three is simple enough to rehearse: a claim, a mechanism explaining how it works, specific support, then the counter-consideration, then a judgement that says which weighs more and on what criterion. Written out it is five sentences. A student who practises that shape on six real questions, marked each time, moves from the middle band to the top band in most subjects, and the gain transfers across every written subject they take.

Science extended responses work the same way with different furniture. A six-mark question in Biology wants linked scientific reasoning in sequence, not a list of true statements. In Chemistry it wants the mechanism stated in the correct order with the right terminology. Students who write everything they know on the topic land in the middle band because the marker cannot find a chain of reasoning. Writing fewer, better-linked sentences scores higher, which is counter-intuitive enough that it has to be taught explicitly.

07

Tiering, and the content that moves with it

  • Cambridge Core reports C to G; Extended reports A* to E
  • Pearson Foundation caps at grade 5; Higher reaches 9 and allows a 3
  • The tier is binding at the centre's final entry deadline, not before
  • Many non-science subjects are single tier, so band descriptors are the only route up

Tiering is a content decision disguised as an administrative one. At Cambridge, Core and Extended report different grade ranges and examine different amounts of material; at Pearson, Foundation and Higher do the same. In Mathematics, Cambridge Core reports C to G and Extended reports A* to E, while Pearson Foundation caps at grade 5 and Higher reaches grade 9 while allowing a grade 3. In the sciences the tier changes both the content and the question difficulty.

The practical point is that the tier bounds the ceiling before any tutoring begins. A student on a Core entry cannot reach the top grades however well they are taught, so if a university or sixth-form requirement needs a higher grade, the tier is the first conversation and the tutor is the second. Schools tier provisionally in Year 10 from internal assessment, and the decision becomes binding at the centre's final entry deadline.

Moving up a tier is a real option and a real commitment. The additional content has to be taught, and the question difficulty increases, so a move made in February with a weak foundation can produce a worse outcome than a strong Core performance. A move made in Year 10, with a term of targeted work behind it, usually produces a better one. The deciding evidence should be a marked Extended or Higher paper rather than a conversation about potential.

Non-science subjects complicate the picture, because many are single tier. In Business Studies, Economics, History, Geography and Computer Science there is one entry and the differentiation sits inside the paper, in the extended questions. That is why the writing routines in the previous sections matter so much in those subjects: there is no tier to move, so the only route to a higher grade is the band descriptor on the long questions.

08

What subject tuition costs, and whether marking is in the hour

Before any rate band, ask one question: does the hour include marking my child's written work between sessions? It is the question that decides value in subject tutoring and the one almost nobody asks. An hour of live teaching with no marking leaves the student self-assessing, which is where most of the error in Year 11 sits. An hour that comes with written work annotated against the mark scheme is a different product, and the price difference between them is usually smaller than the difference in effect.

With that in mind, the published Dubai figures, read in October 2026. Budget online platforms advertise from AED 33 to 65 an hour inside a band of roughly AED 45 to 150, and at that level marking is rarely included. A qualified subject tutor online is published at AED 150 to 300; one Dubai agency's rate card listed IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialists are published at AED 200 to 450 and above, with a UK agency operating in the Gulf at AED 270 and a named-tutor service at AED 650. In-home visits across Dubai are quoted at AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included.

For monthly budgeting, Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run AED 240 to 600 for budget support, AED 600 to 1,200 for mid-range and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work. Packages seen in the market include around AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. None of those figures is an IB Gram price and this page publishes none; ask on the consultation after the free trial lesson.

The subject-tutoring conclusion is about shape rather than tier. A six-week targeted block that includes marking, bought at the specialist end, usually costs less in total than two terms of unmarked weekly teaching at the budget end, and it produces a repaired routine instead of a record of attendance. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that Dubai private school fees would not rise for 2026-27, so this is a clean decision about a block of sessions rather than one competing with a fee increase.

Coursework, practicals and the line a tutor does not cross

  • Coursework is the student's own work; a tutor teaches the skill and marks drafts
  • An examined alternative paper can be practised without limit
  • Cambridge practical reasoning is written and fully teachable online
  • Papers and mark schemes belong to the boards; we link rather than host

Several IGCSE subjects in this district run coursework routes, and the distinction between coursework and an examined alternative decides what help is legitimate. Where Geography or History coursework is entered, the work is assessed and must be the student's own. A tutor may teach the skills it requires, explain what the criteria reward and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor may not plan it for them, write any part of it, or edit it to completion, and nobody at IB Gram will.

Where the alternative paper is entered instead, the same material is examined rather than submitted, so it can be practised without limit. That is why the exams officer's answer about which route the centre entered is worth having before any plan is made. Families sometimes buy coursework support for a child whose school entered the alternative paper, which is both unnecessary and the wrong preparation.

Science practicals sit in a similar place. Cambridge examines practical skills in a separate paper worth a fifth of the grade in each separate science, either a practical test with apparatus or the alternative to practical, which is written. Pearson embeds those skills in the written papers. The written reasoning around experiments, which is most of the mark scheme, can be taught entirely over video; apparatus handling stays with the school.

Two other boundaries, stated because competitors in this market cross them. Official syllabuses, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are the boards' property, so we cite and link them rather than hosting them. And nobody here is described as a current examiner unless that status can be evidenced, because the claim is widely made and rarely checkable. If anybody offers it, ask which board, which component and which series.

Permits, the school week and when subject work happens

  • MoHRE private tuition permit: free, two years, Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • No individual is KHDA approved; that permit is for institutes with premises
  • Realistic weekday start across most of Jumeirah 1 is after 16:45
  • Timed whole papers belong in a weekend morning, not a weekday evening

Private tutoring in the UAE requires a permit, and the specifics are checkable. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without it carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no figure is quoted here.

The permit also carries a code of conduct that bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school, and Abu Dhabi's professional-ethics rules prohibit private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school. No individual is KHDA approved, because the KHDA Educational Services Permit is issued to training institutes with premises. IB Gram holds no such permit and operates no premises anywhere in the UAE.

On the week itself: Jumeirah 1 students mostly commute to the Al Safa, Al Wasl or Umm Suqeim schools, and Beach Road in the afternoon is slower than the distance implies. A realistic weekday start for most of the district is after 16:45, earlier for the Al Wasl and Al Hudaiba edges where the journey runs away from the coast. Timed whole papers belong in a weekend morning, because an hour and a half of examination conditions is not available at 17:30 on a Tuesday for anybody.

Ramadan moves the whole pattern. School days shorten, afternoons compress and the productive window shifts to the evening after Iftar. Families who move the slot two to three hours later and keep the frequency hold the marking cycle through the month; families who cancel usually lose six weeks rather than four, because restarting takes a fortnight. Plan the shift before the month begins and the subject work continues uninterrupted.

Where we tutor

Jumeirah 1 and where the written work actually gets done

Subject work at IGCSE is written work, which means it needs a desk, a quiet hour and somewhere to keep a folder. These are the parts of the district and what each one realistically offers a Year 11 student in the evening.

Jumeirah Beach Road and Mercato

The spine of the district and its slowest afternoon stretch. Families on this road should plan a weekday start after 16:45 and keep timed paper practice for a weekend morning when nobody is arriving home mid-session.

Al Bada'a

Established villa streets set back from the main road, usually with a study or a spare room that can hold a folder and a laptop for a term. That matters more for IGCSE than for younger years, because written work accumulates.

Al Hudaiba and the Satwa edge

The older inland part of the district, closer to the city and to schools towards Oud Metha. Afternoon journeys run away from the coast here, which often means an earlier arrival home and a usable 16:30 slot.

Pearl Jumeira and Jumeira Bay

Newer waterfront addresses with limited entry points. Quiet, with few evening interruptions, which suits full timed papers; the trade is a slightly longer last mile on any school run.

La Mer and the beachfront

Apartment living with short turnaround times. Practical for short, frequent sessions, which is the right shape for subjects like ICT and Computer Science where the work is procedural and best done in repeated small blocks.

City Walk

Dense apartment blocks immediately inland, with the shortest door-to-desk time in the district. Useful in the eight weeks before a series, when two short sessions a week beat one long one.

Al Wasl and the Safa edge

The corridor towards Horizon English School and the Al Safa secondary belt. Students here often have the shortest commute of anybody in the district, so an early evening slot and a second later one are both realistic.

Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah 2 and 3

The continuation of the coastal strip, where many of the district's secondary students actually study. Journey times along the coast vary more by hour than by distance, which is why fixed slots should be set from arrival time rather than from the bell.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Jumeirah 1

Schools in and immediately around Jumeirah 1

The district holds mostly primary and all-through provision, with secondary students commuting along the coast or inland. Boards and syllabus codes differ between schools a kilometre apart, so the exam entry rather than the prospectus is the document that matters.

  • Al Ittihad Private School Jumeira
  • Latifa School for Girls
  • Horizon English School
  • GEMS Jumeirah Primary School
  • Jumeirah English Speaking School

The Al Safa and Al Wasl secondary belt

Where most Year 10 and Year 11 students from this district study, ten to twenty minutes away outside peak traffic. Several of these schools run Cambridge entries, others Pearson, and a few enter different subjects with different boards in the same year group.

  • Jumeirah College
  • Jumeira Baccalaureate School
  • Safa British School
  • Raffles International School
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah

The coastal and Al Barsha belt

Reachable from the district in twenty-five to forty minutes depending on the road. Larger campuses with broader subject offers, including the less commonly entered IGCSE subjects that are hardest to find a specialist tutor for locally.

  • Dubai College
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Kings' School Dubai
  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Dubai American Academy

Named schools are context for families living in Jumeirah 1. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any school named here, and boards, syllabus codes and tiers should be confirmed with the school or the relevant board.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Sort the lost marks before you enquire

Take the most recent marked paper and divide the lost marks into content, application, command word and time. It costs nothing, it takes twenty minutes, and it converts a vague worry about a subject into a specific question type. Send what you find with your enquiry.

  2. 02

Get the syllabus code and the tier

One email to the exams officer: which board, which syllabus code, which tier, and for Geography or History whether the centre entered coursework or the alternative paper. Those answers decide what is worth teaching, and three of the four cannot be guessed from the textbook.

  3. 03

A free trial lesson on the marked paper

One trial lesson, one subject, before any paid block is booked. The tutor reads the paper against the mark scheme with your child, names the routine that is missing and says what six weeks would target. You decide afterwards whether to continue and in which subject.

  4. 04

Run one six-week block, with marking

One subject, one routine, six weeks, with written work set every session and annotated between them. Make marking an explicit part of the arrangement rather than an assumed one, because an unmarked hour leaves the student self-assessing and that is where most Year 11 error lives.

  5. 05

    Re-test the same question type

At the end of the block, a timed question of the identical type, marked to the published scheme. If the routine is reliable the mark moves and you can pick the next target. If it has not, the diagnosis was wrong and more of the same will not help. Open-ended tuition hides both results.

  6. 06

Count back from the entry, not the exam

Ask the exams officer which of the two UAE Cambridge series your child is entered for, June or November, and when final entries close, because tier decisions live at that deadline rather than in a parents' evening. Build the revision block back from the first paper in your centre's administrative zone and the plan fits inside a Dubai term.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The syllabus code, not the subject

Cambridge 0450 and Pearson's business specification are different animals, as are Cambridge 0500 and 4EA1. Our tutors teach named syllabuses to their published command words and assessment objectives, which is what makes the first two sessions targeted rather than exploratory.

Marking is part of the hour, not an extra

Written work is annotated against the mark scheme and returned before the next session, and the session starts from the corrections. A student marking their own work credits intention; the scheme credits what is on the page, and the gap between those is most of the lost marks.

Routines rather than revision

A source routine in History, an evaluation structure in Economics, trace tables in Computer Science, working written out in maths. These are learnable in weeks and they transfer to A Level and the Diploma, which general revision does not.

A past-paper method, not a past-paper pile

Sit it to time, have it marked strictly, classify every lost mark, rewrite the answer properly, then re-test the same question type a fortnight later. The step families skip is the rewrite, and it is the one where the learning happens.

Rates published with sources and dates

Every AED figure here is somebody else's published number, read in October 2026 and attributed, including what each tier usually includes. We do not present market rates as ours, and we do not hide a figure behind a form.

Clear limits, in writing

Coursework is the student's own work and we mark drafts rather than produce text. Papers and mark schemes belong to the boards and we link rather than host them. We run no in-home service anywhere in the UAE, and no page here promises a tutor at a Dubai address.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jumeirah 1: your questions answered

Which IGCSE subject is costing my child the most marks?+

Not necessarily the one with the lowest grade. Take each marked paper and divide the lost marks into four groups: content the student did not know, content they knew and failed to apply, marks lost to the command word where a good answer addressed a different question, and marks lost to time where the last questions are rushed or blank. A subject with a middling grade and a large command-word loss is usually the fastest to repair, and a subject with a genuine content gap takes longer. The paper tells you; the report does not.

What does the command word explain actually require?+

A causal link, stated rather than implied. Describe asks what happens; explain asks why it happens, and the mark is for the connective reasoning between cause and effect. A student who writes an excellent description for an explain question has produced something the mark scheme cannot credit, which feels unfair and is simply how band descriptors work. The habit that fixes it is mechanical: highlight the command word before writing, say aloud what it demands, then write to that shape. Three weeks of that on real past-paper questions moves students who looked stuck.

Why does my child lose marks on eight-mark evaluation questions in Economics?+

Almost always because the answer lists arguments without weighing them. Band descriptors for evaluative questions reward a judgement with a stated basis, which means saying which consideration matters most and on what criterion, not concluding that it depends. The structure that satisfies the band is five sentences: a claim, the mechanism that makes it work, specific support, the counter-consideration, then the judgement with its criterion. Diagram discipline is the other half in Economics, because an unlabelled axis or an unexplained curve shift loses marks before any writing is read.

Is Cambridge First Language English 0500 different from the 9 to 1 version?+

The syllabus content and assessment approach are closely aligned; the difference is the grading scale, with 0990 reporting on the 9 to 1 scale and 0500 on A* to G. What matters more for tutoring is that both are won and lost in the same two places: summary, where marks go to lifted phrasing rather than genuine condensing, and directed writing, where marks go to ignoring the stated audience, form and purpose. Check which code is on your child's entry, because the statement of results will carry it and university applications later may ask.

How should a Business Studies answer be structured to reach the top band?+

By attaching everything to the case-study business. Cambridge 0450 marks across four assessment objectives, and the losses sit overwhelmingly in application and evaluation rather than knowledge. A top-band answer defines the concept briefly, applies it explicitly to this business and its stated circumstances, analyses the consequence in a chain rather than a list, then recommends one course of action with a reason tied to the business's own situation. Students who write textbook-correct answers about no particular company sit in the middle band however much they know.

Does Cambridge IGCSE ICT still have practical papers, and can they be taught online?+

Yes to both. Cambridge 0417 pairs a theory paper with practical papers covering document production, data manipulation, presentations, spreadsheets and website authoring, and those papers are marked against precise outputs. That makes screen-shared tuition close to the ideal format, because the tutor watches the actual work being produced against the actual task wording. The commonest loss in ICT is output that looks perfectly reasonable and does not match the brief, which is only visible when somebody reads the task and the result side by side.

My child's History answers retell the source instead of using it. How is that fixed?+

With a routine applied to every source without exception: who produced it, for what purpose, at what moment, and therefore what it can and cannot be taken to show. Cambridge 0470's source paper is where the grade is made, and retelling content is the default failure because it feels like answering. Five to eight weeks of marked source practice usually converts it, because the routine is short and the mark scheme rewards it consistently. Compare your child's source-paper mark with their structured-questions mark; a gap between them confirms the diagnosis.

Do Geography and History coursework options change what a tutor can do?+

Substantially, so find out which route the centre entered. Where coursework is submitted, the work is assessed and must be the student's own: a tutor may teach the skills, explain what the criteria reward and give feedback on a draft the student has written, and may not plan it, write any part of it or edit it to completion. Where the alternative paper is entered instead, the same material is examined rather than submitted and can be practised without limit. Families sometimes buy coursework support for a child sitting the alternative paper, which is the wrong preparation entirely.

How many past papers should a Year 11 student actually complete?+

Fewer than most families think, worked much harder. A paper sat to time, marked strictly against the published scheme, with every lost mark classified and the weakest answers rewritten properly, is worth four papers completed and glanced at. Six to eight papers treated that way across the final two months is a substantial programme. Twelve papers completed and scored teaches almost nothing, which is why a student can finish a stack of them and sit at the same grade. The rewriting step is the one that moves marks.

Should my child mark their own past papers?+

Not alone, and this is the strongest practical argument for marking being part of a tutoring arrangement. A student marking their own work awards marks for intention, because they know what they meant to convey. The mark scheme awards marks only for what appears on the page. That gap is where most self-assessment error in Year 11 lives, and it produces confident students who are surprised in August. Self-marking has a place for multiple choice and short calculation answers; for anything band-marked, somebody else has to read it.

What is the difference between Core and Extended in a non-science subject?+

In many non-science subjects there is no tier at all. Business Studies, Economics, History, Geography and Computer Science are single-entry at Cambridge, and the differentiation sits inside the paper rather than between tiers, concentrated in the extended band-marked questions. That matters because there is no tier to move up: the only route to a higher grade is the band descriptor on the long questions, which is exactly why evaluation structure and specific support carry so much weight in those subjects.

Does the hourly rate include marking my child's written work?+

Ask explicitly, because it varies and it is the single biggest determinant of value. Budget platforms advertising from AED 33 to 65 an hour rarely include marking. Qualified subject tutors published at AED 150 to 300 often include some written feedback. Specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above usually mark between sessions as part of the arrangement. The price difference between an unmarked and a marked hour is typically smaller than the difference in effect, so this question is worth more than negotiating the rate down.

How many IGCSE subjects can we sensibly tutor at once from Jumeirah 1?+

One properly, or two alternating. A Year 11 student in this district is already carrying eight to ten subjects, mandatory Arabic and Islamic Education, a commute along Beach Road and whatever else the week contains. Three tutored subjects consumes the independent practice time the tutoring is supposed to improve. One subject with one target routine for six weeks produces visible movement; two subjects alternating in a single weekly slot works when there are two borderline grades rather than one serious weakness.

Can a tutor help with IGCSE speaking and listening components?+

Yes, and modern language speaking is one of the most rehearsable components in the whole qualification. Cambridge 0520 French and its sister syllabuses use stable task types across series, so timed rehearsal with feedback on register, tense accuracy and fluency moves the mark reliably. Families often leave speaking alone because it feels unteachable at a distance, which is backwards: a video call is a conversation, and a conversation is exactly what the component assesses. Listening practice works the same way with recorded material and marked transcription work.

Which IGCSE subjects benefit least from tutoring?+

Subjects where the student's content knowledge is already secure and the loss is purely timing, and subjects where the work is practical and the school's provision is already strong. A student who scores well on every question they reach and leaves the last two blank has a pacing problem that a few timed papers fix without a term of teaching. It is also worth being honest that a strong student in a well-taught subject often gains more from six marked past papers than from thirty hours of instruction, and we would rather say so.

What should a tutor be able to tell me about my child's syllabus in the first ten minutes?+

The code, the components and the trap. A tutor who knows Cambridge 0470 will name the source paper as where the grade is decided before you mention it. One who knows 0450 will ask whether your child's answers reach the case-study business. One who knows 0460 will ask whether the skills paper or the themes paper is weaker. If the conversation stays on topics, chapters and general revision, you are speaking to somebody who teaches the subject rather than the assessment, and the difference shows up in the marks.

Start with the paper, then pick one routine

The useful next step costs nothing. Find the most recent marked paper in the subject that worries you, sort the lost marks into content, application, command word and time, and ask the exams officer for the syllabus code, the tier and whether any coursework route was entered. That turns a grade into a diagnosis, and a diagnosis into a six-week target that can be tested at the end. Lessons from IB Gram are one-to-one and online, with a free trial lesson in one subject before any paid block, written work marked against the published scheme between sessions, and no in-home service anywhere in the UAE.
