IGCSE Science Tutor in TECOM

An IGCSE science tutor in TECOM is rarely one bill. Barsha Heights households usually need biology, chemistry and physics covered at Extended tier, and the market prices each of them separately, which is how a single request turns into three invoices. This page does the arithmetic before you commit: what Dubai providers publish per hour, which of the three sciences genuinely needs weekly contact, and which needs six sessions in the right fortnight. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so the cost carries no travel component.

  • Syllabus codes named: 0610, 0620, 0625, 0654, 4BI1, 4CH1, 4PH1
  • AED market bands quoted with the provider who published them
  • Free trial lesson before any payment, no card held
  • Delivered one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time

IB & IGCSE in TECOM

Three sciences, three invoices: what TECOM families are actually buying

A parent in Barsha Heights types "IGCSE science tutor in TECOM" into Google because a Year 10 report card came back with three separate science grades and two of them were disappointing. What the search does not reveal is that science at IGCSE is not one subject. A child on the triple-award route sits Cambridge Biology 0610, Chemistry 0620 and Physics 0625 as three independent qualifications, with three sets of papers, three practical components and three mark schemes. The market charges by the hour and by the subject. One hour a week on each science at the qualified-tutor band is three hours, and at Dubai's published rates that is a meaningful monthly line in a household budget that already carries school fees.

The honest starting position is that most families do not need all three at the same intensity. Chemistry and physics share a mathematical spine; a child who cannot rearrange a formula reliably is losing marks in both, and that single weakness is cheaper to fix once than to pay for twice. Biology fails for a different reason, almost always vocabulary precision and the command terms, which responds to short, frequent, low-cost sessions rather than long ones. Treating the three sciences as one undifferentiated spend is the most common way money leaves a TECOM household without a grade moving.

The second thing worth knowing before you pay anybody is where the marks sit. On Cambridge Extended science papers, the theory paper carries half the grade, the multiple-choice paper carries three tenths, and the practical-skills paper carries the remaining fifth. That last component is the one almost nobody tutors, because it requires a tutor who can read a results table and spot that the student recorded four significant figures from a thermometer that reads to half a degree. It is also the component where improvement is fastest, because it is a set of habits rather than a body of knowledge. A parent paying AED 250 an hour for a tutor who only re-teaches the syllabus is buying the expensive half of the problem and leaving the cheap half untouched.

TECOM, which the KHDA school listings and most residents still also call Barsha Heights, sits between the Al Barsha school cluster and the Marina towers. The practical effect on tutoring is that children living in the same tower attend American School of Dubai, GEMS Dubai American Academy, Dubai College, GEMS Wellington International School and Nord Anglia International School Dubai, which means four different science departments, two exam boards and at least two different tiering decisions on the same corridor. A tutor matched by proximity is matched to a postcode. A tutor matched by syllabus code is matched to the paper.

Everything that follows is priced, sourced and counted. The AED figures belong to the providers who published them and are named as such; they are market context, not an IB Gram price list. Our own model is a free trial lesson first, then a quoted plan built around how many of the three sciences actually need weekly contact. Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service we run only in India, and the comparison table further down sets out what that decision saves a Barsha Heights family in both money and evening hours.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Science at 16 arrives through one of two specifications, and the choice was made by the school, not the family. Knowing which one your child sits changes the papers, the practical arrangement and the number of tutoring hours a grade move actually needs.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics

Three separate qualifications, each tiered Core or Extended. Extended candidates sit a multiple-choice paper worth 30% of the grade, a structured theory paper worth 50%, and a practical-skills component worth 20%, taken either as a laboratory Practical Test or as the written Alternative to Practical. The Core tier caps the available grade, so the tiering decision made in Year 10 sets a ceiling before any revision begins.

The dominant route in the British-curriculum schools around Al Barsha and Al Sufouh that TECOM children attend. Cambridge allocates every exam centre to one of six administrative zones and warns that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who use the wrong zone timetable, so the timetable your child works from must be the one their own school issued, not a version downloaded from a search result.

4BI1 / 4CH1 / 4PH1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Sciences

Two written papers per science, with practical skills assessed inside the written papers rather than in a separate component. The longer first paper carries the larger share of the marks. There is no tiering, so every candidate sits the same paper and the full grade range stays open throughout the course. Question style leans more heavily on extended written answers than the Cambridge equivalent.

Used by several Dubai schools within reach of Barsha Heights, and the reason two neighbours can sit "IGCSE chemistry" and face genuinely different papers. Pearson publishes International GCSE series in May/June and November; the November 2026 final timetable ran to 19 November 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026.

Combined, Co-ordinated and Double Award Science

Routes that compress the three sciences into one or two qualifications rather than three. Cambridge Combined Science 0653 yields a single grade; Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 yields a double award. Pearson's Science Double Award 4SD0 does the same across six shorter papers. Content is reduced rather than simplified, which changes what a tutor should cut from a revision plan.

The route that most changes the tutoring bill for a TECOM family, because a double award needs roughly two thirds of the contact hours of three separate sciences while still keeping most post-16 doors open. Schools in the Al Barsha cluster use it for students whose strengths lie outside science but who still need a recognised science qualification.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme Sciences

The feeder route in the IB schools near TECOM, assessed against four criteria rather than against papers. Students arriving into an IGCSE science class from MYP 4 or 5 are usually strong at investigation design and weak at the terse, mark-scheme-driven recall that a Cambridge theory paper rewards. That gap is a six-session problem, not a year-long one.

Dubai International Academy and Nord Anglia International School Dubai both sit within the school run that TECOM households make, so mid-course transfers between MYP and IGCSE science happen on this corridor more often than the national pattern would suggest. The transfer costs money only if nobody maps the content gap first.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Science tutoring is bought by subject and wasted by subject. What follows is what each one assesses and the specific place marks go missing, so you can decide which of them needs weekly contact and which needs a short, targeted block.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610

Core and Extended

Loses marks on command-term precision far more than on content. "Describe" and "explain" carry different mark allocations, and a correct idea phrased as a description earns nothing on an explain question. Transport in plants, homeostasis and inheritance are the recurring weak points. Cheap to improve with short frequent sessions.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620

Core and Extended

The mole calculation sequence is where Extended candidates separate. Moles, concentration, reacting masses and percentage yield form one chain; a break anywhere in it costs marks across the whole paper. Electrolysis and organic reaction pathways follow. Needs sustained weekly contact for most students.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625

Core and Extended

Almost entirely an algebra problem dressed as a science one. Rearranging equations, unit conversion and reading a gradient off a graph account for a large share of lost marks. Electricity circuits and moments are the topics students name, but the underlying failure is usually mathematical.

Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654

Double award, Core and Extended

Covers all three disciplines at reduced depth for two grades. The risk is a student revising from a triple-award resource and spending weeks on content their paper will never ask about. A tutor's first job here is deletion, which is why this route costs fewer hours.

Cambridge Combined Science 0653

Single award, Core and Extended

One grade across the three sciences. Suits students loading their options elsewhere. Post-16 science routes usually want a double award or separate sciences, so the honest tutoring conversation here is about what the qualification keeps open and what it closes.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Biology 4BI1

Untiered

Two written papers, more extended prose than its Cambridge counterpart, and practical skills folded into the written assessment. Students moving from a Cambridge scheme underestimate how much writing stamina the longer paper demands in the final forty minutes.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Chemistry 4CH1

Untiered

Calculation-heavy with a distinctive emphasis on practical method description. Candidates are asked to write a method that would work, which is a different skill from recalling one. Marks are lost on control variables and on quantities that are not specified.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Physics 4PH1

Untiered

Formulae are supplied in part, which shifts the difficulty from recall to selection. Students pick a plausible equation rather than the correct one. Radioactivity, waves and electrical energy calculations are the reliable mark-losers in this specification.

Practical skills: Paper 5 and Paper 6

Cambridge Extended and Core

Worth a fifth of each Cambridge science grade and tutored by almost nobody. Content is table design, significant figures appropriate to the instrument, anomalous-point identification, graph scaling and error discussion. A set of habits, learnable in a handful of sessions.

Maths inside science

All specifications

Standard form, significant figures, rearrangement, percentage change, gradient and ratio. The single highest-return tutoring target for a family paying for both chemistry and physics, because one block of work moves two grades and reduces the number of hours either subject needs afterwards.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core and Extended

Listed here because science grades frequently depend on it. A student weak on 0580 algebra will present as weak on 0625 physics, and tutoring the physics alone treats the symptom. Worth diagnosing before a physics plan is priced.

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics and post-16 bridging

Year 11 into Year 12

Relevant to TECOM families whose children intend to carry a science into A Level or IB Diploma. A short bridging block in the summer after Year 11 costs less than remediation in Year 12, and it is the one piece of science-adjacent tutoring with a clear end date.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways a TECOM family buys IGCSE science, priced differently and suited to different problems. The right answer depends on how many of the three sciences are genuinely in trouble.

Weekly one-to-one, one science

The standard arrangement for a single science in genuine difficulty, usually chemistry or physics in Year 11. Sixty or ninety minutes a week over live video, working from the student's own school scheme and the correct syllabus code. Ninety minutes suits chemistry calculation chains; sixty is enough for biology.

  • One syllabus code, one tutor, one weekly slot
  • Session notes sent after each lesson for a parent who was at a desk
  • Paper-specific practice rather than general worksheets
  • Pauses during school exam weeks without losing the slot

Two sciences, one tutor, consolidated hours

Where a tutor who holds both chemistry and physics takes a single longer weekly session and splits it by need rather than by timetable. The shared mathematical content is taught once instead of twice, which is why this arrangement usually costs less than two separate subject bookings for the same outcome.

  • Standard form, rearrangement and significant figures taught once
  • Weekly balance shifts towards whichever paper is closer
  • One point of contact and one set of session notes
  • Suits double-award and co-ordinated science candidates particularly well

Short targeted block: practical skills and command terms

A fixed, finite set of sessions aimed at the Cambridge practical-skills paper and at command-term discipline across all three sciences. Bought as a block with a defined end rather than as an open commitment, which makes it the cheapest piece of science tutoring available and the one most often skipped.

  • Table design, significant figures and anomalous points
  • Graph scaling, gradient and error discussion
  • Command-term drilling against real mark schemes
  • Finishes on a stated date rather than rolling on

Intensive run-up to a June or November series

Compressed sessions in the weeks before a Cambridge or Pearson series, built backwards from the specific paper dates on the school's own zone timetable. Useful, finite, and the arrangement most likely to be oversold elsewhere, so the honest version states what six weeks can and cannot change.

  • Planned from the school's issued zone timetable, not a generic one
  • Weakest paper first, highest-weighted paper second
  • Past-paper work under timed conditions
  • Stops at the exam rather than drifting into the next term

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in TECOM

01

The three-science arithmetic, before anybody quotes you a rate

Start with the number of qualifications rather than the number of hours. A triple-award candidate holds three science grades, each with its own papers and its own mark scheme. A double-award candidate holds two grades drawn from one set of papers. A combined-science candidate holds one. Those three positions carry genuinely different tutoring costs, and the difference is larger than most families expect because it compounds: three subjects means three sets of past papers, three tiering decisions and three separate conversations with three different teachers.

The published rates in the Dubai market give the per-hour side of the sum. At the budget end, EdFlik advertises from AED 45 to 65 an hour and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52 for online sessions, both typically with university-student tutors. A qualified subject tutor working online sits roughly between AED 150 and 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150. Specialist IGCSE and A Level tutors run from AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's 2026 rate table reaching AED 450 or more. At the top, BartyED publishes AED 650 for a named examiner. Every one of those figures belongs to the provider named beside it.

Multiply the hourly figure by the number of sciences and the monthly reality appears quickly. Bestimate's own monthly estimates for a single weekly hour run AED 240 to 600 at the budget tier, AED 600 to 1,200 at the mid tier, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support. Those are per subject. Three sciences at the mid tier therefore lands somewhere between AED 1,800 and 3,600 a month if each one is booked independently, which is the number most families arrive at by accident rather than by decision. The table sets the three routes side by side so the decision can be made deliberately.

IB Gram does not publish a price list on these pages, and the figures above are not ours. Our position is a free trial lesson first, then a quoted plan that says plainly how many of the three sciences need weekly contact. Often the answer is one weekly subject plus a short finite block on practical skills, which is a materially smaller commitment than three standing appointments.

Which papers your child actually sits, by syllabus code

Ask a Dubai tutor which code they teach before anything else. "IGCSE science" is not a specification; 0620 and 4CH1 are, and they do not reward the same answers. A chemistry tutor working from Cambridge material with a Pearson candidate will spend weeks on a paper structure the student will never see. This is the most expensive mismatch in the market and it is entirely avoidable with one question.

On Cambridge separate sciences at Extended tier, the structure is consistent across 0610, 0620 and 0625. Paper 2 is multiple choice and carries 30% of the grade. Paper 4 is the structured theory paper and carries 50%. The practical-skills component carries the remaining 20%, taken either as Paper 5, a laboratory Practical Test, or Paper 6, the written Alternative to Practical. Which of those two a candidate sits is a school decision driven by laboratory capacity, so a TECOM parent should confirm it rather than assume. Core-tier candidates sit Paper 1 and Paper 3 in place of Papers 2 and 4, with a capped grade ceiling.

Pearson's International GCSE sciences work differently. Each of 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 runs two written papers, the first longer and carrying the larger share of the marks, with practical skills assessed inside those papers rather than separately. There is no tiering, so the full grade range stays available to every candidate from the first day of the course. Students crossing from a Cambridge scheme into a Pearson one, which happens on a school move, frequently underprepare for the extended written answers in the longer paper.

Confirm every weighting against the board's own current specification document before you build a revision plan on it. Boards revise specifications, and a weighting copied from a tutoring website two years old is a plausible-looking way to mis-allocate forty hours of a Year 11's time.

Paper 6 is the cheapest fifth of a Cambridge science grade

  • Independent variable in the first column, units in the heading, not in the cells
  • Readings recorded to the precision the instrument offers, consistently
  • Graph scale chosen so points fill most of the available grid
  • Anomalous points identified and named, never averaged into the trend
  • Error questions answered with a named source and a specific remedy
  • Confirm whether the school has entered Paper 5 or Paper 6 before preparing

A fifth of every Cambridge separate-science grade sits on the practical-skills component, and it is the part of the course almost no tutoring money reaches. The reason is that it does not look like science teaching. There is no topic to re-explain. What a candidate needs is a set of specific, repeatable habits: a results table drawn with the independent variable in the first column and units in the headings rather than in the cells; readings recorded to the precision the instrument actually offers; a graph with a scale chosen so the plotted points occupy most of the grid; an anomalous result circled and named rather than quietly averaged away.

Those habits are learnable in a small number of sessions because each one is a rule, not an understanding. A student who loses four marks a paper on table conventions is losing them in exactly the same way every time, which makes the fix diagnosable from one piece of past-paper work. Compare that with organic chemistry, where a four-mark deficit can have five different causes and each needs separate teaching. The cost per mark recovered is not remotely similar, and a parent deciding where to spend first should know that.

The error-and-improvement questions at the end of an Alternative to Practical paper are the other reliable source of free marks. They ask what went wrong and how a method could be bettered, and most candidates answer with a generic sentence about being more careful. The marks go to candidates who name a specific source of error in that specific method and a specific change that addresses it. That is a scripted skill with a limited number of patterns, and drilling the patterns is fast work.

If your child sits Paper 5 rather than Paper 6, the content is the same thinking applied in a laboratory under time pressure, with the additional variable of apparatus handling. Confirm with the school which of the two is entered, because the preparation differs enough that getting it wrong wastes the whole block.

04

Where TECOM families waste science tutoring money

  • Mark one past-paper script before booking twenty sessions of content
  • Match the tutor tier to the problem tier, not to the family's anxiety
  • Consolidate chemistry and physics so the shared maths is taught once
  • Pause through school internal exam weeks and move the hours afterwards
  • Ask what the plan drops, not only what it covers

The first waste is intensity without diagnosis. A report card showing three weak science grades produces three bookings, and three bookings produce three tutors each re-teaching a term of content from the start. Six weeks later the household has spent a significant sum and the papers still come back with the same marks missing, because nobody established which marks were missing. A single diagnostic session against a past paper, with the script marked rather than the topics discussed, changes what the following twenty sessions do.

The second waste is the wrong tier of tutor for the job. A named examiner at AED 650 an hour, as BartyED publishes, is a defensible purchase for a candidate two marks off an A* on a specific paper with six weeks left. It is an indefensible purchase for a Year 9 who has not yet been tiered. Equally, a university-student tutor at AED 45 to 65, as EdFlik advertises, is reasonable value for homework supervision and poor value for a mole-calculation chain that needs a chemist. Matching the tier of tutor to the tier of problem is where most of the available saving sits.

The third waste is duplicated mathematics. A family paying separately for chemistry and physics is frequently paying two people to teach rearrangement, standard form and significant figures to the same child in the same month. Consolidating those two sciences with one tutor who can teach the shared mathematical spine once reduces both the hours and the confusion of two different notations.

The fourth is paying through exam weeks and school holidays out of habit. Sessions during a school's internal examination fortnight generally return very little, because the student has no capacity left. Pausing them and moving the hours to the fortnight afterwards costs nothing and returns more. Any arrangement that cannot be paused is an arrangement built for the provider.

05

The maths hiding inside chemistry and physics

  • Rearrangement with the unknown in the denominator, until it is automatic
  • Standard form and unit prefixes without a calculator prompt
  • Significant figures matched to the instrument or the data given
  • The mole chain taught in order: mass, moles, concentration, yield
  • Gradient and intercept read from a graph as a routine, not a puzzle

Most physics difficulty reported to us from the Marina and New Dubai belt is not physics difficulty. A student who cannot confidently rearrange an equation with the unknown in the denominator will fail at pressure, density, resistance, wave speed and efficiency, and will appear to have five separate topic weaknesses. Teaching those five topics costs five times what teaching the rearrangement costs, and the rearrangement has to be taught anyway before any of the five will stick.

Chemistry has its own version. The mole sits at the centre of a chain that runs from relative formula mass through moles, concentration, reacting masses and percentage yield to limiting reagents. Each link depends on the one before. A student who is shaky on the first link produces wrong answers at the fifth and is told, accurately but unhelpfully, that they struggle with yield calculations. Repairing the chain in order is a handful of sessions. Repairing the symptoms is a term.

The arithmetic that underpins both sits in a short list: standard form, significant figures, unit prefixes from nano to mega, percentage change, ratio, and reading a gradient from a straight-line graph. None of it is beyond a competent Year 10. All of it is assumed rather than taught by science schemes of work that must get through a crowded specification, and it is the gap a tutor can close quickly because there is no conceptual depth to it, only fluency.

For a TECOM family paying for two sciences, this is where the clearest saving sits. One finite block of mathematical fluency work reduces the hours both chemistry and physics subsequently need, and it has the additional effect of lifting the Cambridge Mathematics 0580 grade that the same child is also sitting. One purchase, three grades touched.

06

What a tutor may and may not do with science coursework and investigations

  • A tutor teaches the skill and questions the draft; the student produces the work
  • No supplied data, no rewritten methods, no analysis produced on the student's behalf
  • The test: can the student defend every choice unaided tomorrow?
  • Official specifications referenced and linked, never redistributed

IGCSE sciences no longer carry a large coursework component in the specifications TECOM schools generally use, but students still produce assessed investigation work, school-marked practical reports and, in IB MYP classes next door, criterion-marked investigations. The boundary matters, and it matters more in science than families expect, because a results table is easy for an adult to improve and impossible for a student to defend afterwards.

A tutor may teach the underlying skill, explain what a criterion or a mark scheme rewards, model the technique on a different dataset, ask questions about a draft, and point out that a conclusion does not follow from the evidence presented. A tutor may not supply data, rewrite a method, produce the analysis, or edit a report to completion. The student's own work must remain the student's own work, and any tutor who offers otherwise is selling a malpractice risk that lands on the child, not on the provider.

The practical test of whether a line has been crossed is simple: could the student sit down tomorrow and explain every choice in the document without help? If the answer is no, the document is not theirs. We say this plainly on every page because the UAE tutoring market contains providers who sell completed assessed work outright, and a parent comparing options deserves to know which side of that line a provider stands on.

The same principle applies to past papers and mark schemes. We reference official specification documents and link to the board's own pages rather than redistributing them. Boards hold copyright in that material, and unreleased material carries an additional malpractice exposure for the candidate.

07

Online against the in-home alternative, costed for a Barsha Heights tower

In-home tutoring is a real product in Dubai and it is reasonable to want it. The honest comparison is about what the premium buys. Bestimate's 2026 rate table puts in-home one-to-one visits at AED 180 to 350 an hour, and independent home tutors advertise between AED 200 and 500, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor working online. Monthly packages in the market run around AED 799 for eight online sessions and between AED 1,599 and 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions. The gap is the travel, and the travel is not a service the student receives.

For a Barsha Heights tower the travel cost is higher than the raw distance suggests. Visitor parking in TECOM towers is limited, building access needs a security desk, and a tutor arriving between 17:00 and 19:00 is crossing Sheikh Zayed Road at the worst hour of the day. A tutor who covers that journey twice in an evening cannot take many students, which is precisely why the hourly rate carries a premium. The family pays for a car on Sheikh Zayed Road.

The second cost is selection. Matching by travel radius means choosing from the tutors willing to drive to your tower at that hour. Matching by syllabus means choosing a 0620 chemist who has taught the Extended mole sequence to Cambridge candidates for years, wherever that person happens to live. For a specific code at a specific tier, those two pools are not the same size, and the narrower pool is the one that costs more per useful hour.

IB Gram does not offer home visits anywhere in the UAE; our home-visit service runs only in India. UAE lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, with a shared whiteboard, so a chemistry calculation is written out and worked through in the same way it would be on a kitchen table, and the recording or notes remain available afterwards. The table below sets the two options against each other on the terms that actually differ.

Cost in context: fees, exam entries and where tutoring sits

A tutoring figure means little without the numbers around it. Dubai's private school sector enrolled 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering 17 different curricula, with UK-curriculum provision accounting for the largest share of enrolment. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in the emirate for the 2026-27 academic year, under Dubai's second economic incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. For a family budgeting science support, that fee freeze is the most useful piece of context available this year: the largest education line in the household is flat, which makes a deliberate tutoring decision easier to size.

Exam entry is the line families forget. Where a student sits papers through their own school, entries are handled by the school and appear on a fees statement. Where a student sits as a private candidate, which happens after a mid-year arrival or a subject dropped and resumed, entry is arranged with a registered exam centre and the costs sit with the family. Confirm the figure with the centre directly; it varies by centre and by subject count, and no number quoted on a tutoring website should be treated as authoritative.

Against that backdrop, the sensible way to size science tutoring is per paper rather than per month. A fifth of a Cambridge science grade sits on practical skills, and a short block there is a small, defined cost. Half sits on the theory paper, which is where sustained weekly work earns its money. Three tenths sits on multiple choice, which responds to timed practice more than to teaching. Allocating spend in those proportions is a different exercise from booking three tutors and hoping.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, four UK-curriculum and three International Baccalaureate, creating 16,846 new places, after six new schools opened during 2025-26 and enrolment rose 6%. More capacity means more mid-year moves, and mid-year moves are the single most common trigger for a sudden, poorly-planned science tutoring spend.

Starting from TECOM, with the limits stated up front

The sequence is short. You tell us the syllabus codes, the tier, the school and which of the three sciences is genuinely in trouble. We run a free trial lesson against a past paper rather than a conversation, so what comes back is a marked script and a short list of where the marks went. Then we quote a plan that says how many weekly hours, on which subject, for how long, and what it leaves out.

Two limits are worth stating before you spend time on the enquiry. First, there are narrow combinations where no UAE-resident tutor is free at the hour a TECOM family wants, and the honest answer in that case is a tutor elsewhere in our network working to Gulf Standard Time, disclosed in advance rather than discovered later. Second, nobody can promise a grade. A tutor can tell you which marks are reachable from where your child is now, and that is a more useful thing to be told than a number.

On regulation, the position is straightforward and worth knowing whoever you hire. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you. Dubai's private schools are overseen by KHDA, which is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate. IB Gram claims no regulator approval, accreditation or partnership, because it holds none.

What we will claim is specific. Tutors matched to the syllabus code rather than to a postcode, one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, a free trial before any payment, session notes for a parent who was at a desk, and a plan that can be paused during an internal exam fortnight. For an IGCSE science tutor in TECOM, that combination is what the money buys.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around TECOM

TECOM sits in the Marina and New Dubai belt, and the areas around it send children to a different mix of schools, exam boards and science departments. The notes below are about science specifically, not general convenience.

Barsha Heights (TECOM)

Tower living, two working parents in most households, and a school run that splits in three directions. Science sessions here work best in the 17:30 to 19:30 window, after the Al Barsha bus run and before a late dinner.

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

The nearest dense school cluster, mixing American, British and IB provision. Families here often need two different science specifications supported inside one household because siblings attend different campuses.

Dubai Marina

Heavy demand for Extended chemistry and physics, and the area where the in-home travel premium bites hardest because tower access and parking add real minutes to a tutor's journey.

JLT

A high proportion of mid-year arrivals, which in science means students joining a 0620 class in February with a term of mole calculations already behind them. Content mapping matters more here than general revision.

JBR

Short physical distance to Al Sufouh schools but a slow one in traffic at dismissal. The practical result is that a 16:30 session rarely starts on time, which is an argument for the online slot rather than a travelling tutor.

Al Sufouh

Home to two of the longest-established British-curriculum secondary schools in Dubai, with science departments that tier early. Students here often need help with a tiering decision rather than with content.

The Greens and The Views

Smaller apartments and a younger cohort, so more Year 9 and Year 10 enquiries than Year 11. The cost argument here is for a short diagnostic block before the tiering decision rather than a year of weekly sessions.

The Springs, The Meadows and The Lakes

Villa communities with longer school runs, which compresses the usable evening. Double-award science families here get the clearest financial benefit from consolidating three subjects into fewer weekly hours.

Emirates Hills

Demand skews towards separate sciences at Extended tier with an eye on medicine or engineering applications, so practical-skills work and post-16 bridging are requested earlier than elsewhere in the belt.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in TECOM

The Al Barsha science departments TECOM feeds

These are the campuses a Barsha Heights address most commonly reaches on a school bus, and between them they run both Cambridge and Pearson science specifications as well as IB MYP sciences. Named here as market context for the exam boards in play, not as any form of relationship.

  • American School of Dubai, Al Barsha 1
  • GEMS Dubai American Academy, Al Barsha 1
  • Dubai International Academy, Al Barsha
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Repton Al Barsha
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai, Al Barsha South
  • Dubai Heights Academy, Al Barsha South

Al Sufouh, the Marina and the inland communities

The second direction the TECOM school run takes, and the cluster where Extended-tier separate sciences are most common. Students we support attend schools across both clusters; no affiliation with any of them is implied or held.

  • Dubai College, Al Sufouh
  • GEMS Wellington International School, Al Sufouh
  • Regent International School, The Greens
  • Emirates International School, Meadows
  • Dubai British School, Emirates Hills
  • Dubai American Academy secondary campus, Al Barsha

Schools are named as ecosystem context for the exam boards and science specifications in use around TECOM; IB Gram holds no affiliation, partnership or endorsement with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the codes, not just the subjects

0620 Extended with Paper 6, or 4CH1 untiered, are different requests. Send the syllabus codes, the tier, the school and the term the trouble started. That one message removes the most expensive mismatch in the Dubai tutoring market before any money changes hands.

  2. 02

Free trial against a past paper

The trial lesson is a diagnostic, not a sales call. The tutor works through recent past-paper questions with your child and marks the script. What comes back to you is a short list of where marks were lost, by paper and by question type, rather than a general impression.

  3. 03

A quoted plan that names what it drops

We put the hours in writing: which science gets weekly contact, which gets a finite block, what the mathematical underpinning needs, and what the plan deliberately leaves out. A plan that covers everything is a plan nobody has thought about.

  4. 04

Weekly sessions on Gulf Standard Time

Slots are set after the school run, usually between 17:30 and 19:30 for Barsha Heights families, and held each week. Sessions run one-to-one over live video with a shared whiteboard, and notes follow afterwards for a parent who was still at work.

  5. 05

Review at six sessions against the same paper

After roughly six sessions we re-run a comparable past paper and compare the two marked scripts. If the marks have not moved in the places the plan targeted, we change the plan or the tutor. That review is the point at which continuing or stopping should be decided.

  6. 06

Pause, stop or shift as the term demands

Internal exam fortnights, business travel, Ramadan timings and the run-up to a June or November series all change what a week can carry. Sessions pause and resume without losing the slot, and the arrangement ends when the family says it ends.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by syllabus code, not by driving distance

A 0620 Extended chemist who has taught the mole sequence to Cambridge candidates for years is a different person from the nearest available science graduate. Online delivery means the first pool is the one you choose from, which is the whole argument for the format.

The practical-skills paper is treated as a subject

A fifth of each Cambridge separate-science grade sits on Paper 5 or Paper 6, and most providers never mention it. We treat table conventions, significant figures, graph scaling and error discussion as teachable content with a defined end point.

AED figures attributed to whoever published them

Every rate on this page names its source and its tier. Three of six competitor pages reviewed in our market research publish no price at all, and two quote US dollars to families who transact in dirhams. Market context is only useful if it is checkable.

Academic honesty stated, not implied

A tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on the student's own work. We do not produce assessed work, supply data or edit a report to completion, and we say so on the page because parts of this market do the opposite.

One tutor can hold two sciences

Chemistry and physics share a mathematical spine. Consolidating them with a tutor who teaches both means that spine is taught once, which usually reduces total hours rather than adding a second standing appointment.

Delivery and its limits disclosed before payment

Lessons are online, one-to-one, over live video. Home visits are an India-only service and are not offered anywhere in the UAE. Where no UAE-resident specialist is free at your hour, we say so in advance and name the alternative.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in TECOM: your questions answered

How much should I expect to pay for an IGCSE science tutor in TECOM?+

The Dubai market splits by tier rather than by area. Online sessions with university-student tutors advertise from AED 45 to 65 at EdFlik and AED 33 to 52 at Tutopiya. A qualified subject tutor working online sits roughly between AED 150 and 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150. Specialist IGCSE support runs AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. Those figures belong to the providers named. The number that matters more is how many of the three sciences need weekly contact, because that multiplier moves the monthly total further than the hourly rate does.

Does my child need separate tutors for biology, chemistry and physics?+

Usually not three. Chemistry and physics share rearrangement, standard form, significant figures and graph work, so one tutor who holds both can teach that spine once instead of twice, which generally reduces total hours. Biology fails differently, almost always on command-term precision and vocabulary, and responds to shorter, more frequent sessions. A practical first step is a marked past-paper script for each science. That usually shows one subject needing sustained weekly work and the other two needing short, defined blocks, which is a smaller commitment than three standing appointments.

What is Paper 6 and why does it matter so much?+

Paper 6 is the written Alternative to Practical on Cambridge separate sciences, and together with the laboratory Paper 5 it carries 20% of the Extended grade. It assesses table design, precision appropriate to the instrument, graph scaling, anomalous-result identification and improvement suggestions. Almost no tutoring in this market touches it, which makes it the cheapest fifth of a grade available. The reason it is cheap is that the content is a set of rules rather than a body of understanding, so a student losing the same four marks every paper can be taught the rule in a handful of sessions. Confirm with the school whether Paper 5 or Paper 6 is entered.

Which syllabus codes do Barsha Heights children usually sit for science?+

Both of the major international routes appear on this corridor. Cambridge separate sciences are 0610 biology, 0620 chemistry and 0625 physics, with Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 as the double award and Combined Science 0653 as the single. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1, with Science Double Award 4SD0. Schools within the TECOM school run use different combinations, so two children in the same tower can sit genuinely different chemistry papers. Ask the school for the code and the tier in writing before booking any tutoring, because the papers reward different things.

Is Co-ordinated Sciences cheaper to support than three separate sciences?+

Materially, yes. Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 produces two grades from one set of papers covering reduced content across the three disciplines, so the weekly hours needed sit closer to one or one and a half than to two or three. The saving disappears if the tutor does not know what to delete. The common failure is a double-award candidate revising from triple-award material and spending weeks on content their paper will never ask about. The first job on this route is mapping the specification against the resources the student already owns, and cutting.

My child is weak in physics. Is the problem actually maths?+

Often it is. A student who cannot reliably rearrange an equation with the unknown in the denominator will struggle with pressure, density, resistance, wave speed and efficiency, and will look as if they have five topic weaknesses rather than one skill gap. Teaching five topics costs roughly five times what teaching the rearrangement costs, and the rearrangement has to be taught first anyway. A diagnostic that separates mathematical fluency from physics understanding is worth running before any physics plan is priced, because it changes both the hours and the order of work.

Do Cambridge and Pearson IGCSE science papers need different preparation?+

Yes, enough that using the wrong past papers wastes weeks. Cambridge Extended separate sciences use a multiple-choice paper at 30%, a structured theory paper at 50% and a practical-skills component at 20%, and candidates are tiered Core or Extended. Pearson's 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 run two written papers with practical skills folded into them and no tiering at all, with more extended written answers and more method-writing. A student crossing from one to the other on a school move typically underprepares for the writing stamina the longer Pearson paper demands.

When do TECOM students actually sit their IGCSE science exams?+

Cambridge runs International GCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series, and UAE candidates sit those two. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November; the November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results went to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and warns it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who use the wrong zone timetable, so work only from the timetable your child's school issued.

What time of day do science sessions realistically work for a TECOM household?+

The Al Barsha and Al Sufouh bus runs put most secondary students back into a Barsha Heights tower between 15:45 and 16:45, depending on the campus and the direction of travel. A session starting before 17:00 competes with the journey and with food. The reliable window is 17:30 to 19:30 on Gulf Standard Time, which also suits households where both parents work until 18:00, because the lesson is already running when they get in and the notes arrive afterwards. During Ramadan, families commonly move sessions to a post-Iftar slot instead.

Can a tutor help with a school science investigation report?+

A tutor can teach the underlying skill, explain what the mark scheme or criterion rewards, model the technique on a different dataset, and ask questions about a draft that expose a conclusion the evidence does not support. A tutor may not supply data, rewrite a method or produce the analysis. The practical test is whether your child could sit down tomorrow and defend every choice in the document unaided. If not, it is not their work, and the consequence of that falls on the student rather than on the provider.

Does a science tutor in Dubai need a permit, and does it cost anything?+

Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone offering private tutoring without a permit is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule is published, so treat any specific amount you see quoted as unverified.

Is a group science class at a tuition centre better value?+

It can be, for the right problem. A group class is reasonable value for timed multiple-choice practice and for general content coverage, where one explanation genuinely serves several students. It is poor value for a broken mole-calculation chain or for practical-skills habits, because those need a marked script and an individual correction. A sensible hybrid is a group class for breadth plus a short one-to-one block on the specific component losing marks, which usually costs less in total than open-ended individual tutoring across all three sciences.

Will my child's IGCSE science grades satisfy UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

For the British track, the Ministry requires a pass in five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE with a grade of no less than E or grade 3, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects. Sciences normally count towards the five. Equivalency is a Ministry process, not something a tutoring provider performs or can guarantee, so verify the current requirements on the Ministry's own channel before planning around them.

My child has eight weeks before the papers. Is it too late to start science tutoring?+

Eight weeks changes what is worth attempting rather than whether anything is. In that window the highest-return targets are the practical-skills component, because it is habit-based and fast to fix, timed multiple-choice technique, and the two or three theory topics carrying the most marks on that specific paper. Re-teaching a year of content is not available and should not be sold to you. A marked past-paper script in the first session is what tells you which of those targets applies, and any plan offered before that script exists is guesswork.

What happens if no UAE-based tutor covers my child's exact specification?+

It happens on narrow combinations, usually a less common specification at an awkward hour. The honest answer is that we match a tutor elsewhere in our network who teaches that specification and schedules to Gulf Standard Time, and we tell you that before you pay rather than after. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video in either case, so the format does not change. Home visits are not part of the arrangement anywhere in the UAE; that is a service we run only in India.

What should improvement look like after a term of TECOM science lessons?+

Set the measure before the first session. The measure should be marks on comparable past papers, broken down by paper and question type, not a general report that confidence has improved. We mark a script in the trial lesson, keep it, and re-run a comparable paper after roughly six sessions. If the marks have not moved in the places the plan targeted, the plan or the tutor changes. That review point is also the natural moment to decide whether to continue paying, which is a decision every provider should make easy.

Price the papers, not the panic

An IGCSE science tutor in TECOM is a decision with three variables: which specification your child sits, how many of the three sciences genuinely need weekly contact, and which component is actually losing the marks. Get those three right and the monthly figure is usually smaller than the one a family arrives at by booking three tutors in a week. Send us the syllabus codes, the tier and the school. The free trial lesson is a marked past paper, the plan that follows names what it leaves out, and every session runs one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
