IB Chemistry Tutor in TECOM

An IB chemistry tutor in TECOM is usually brought in because of what the school day cannot contain. Laboratory time is finite, the practical happens in school and the write-up goes home, and Barsha Heights students reach home late because their bus collects from several communities before yours. The calculations and the mechanisms, which are where chemistry grades are actually decided, end up in whatever evening is left. This page is about closing that gap. Lessons are one-to-one online.

  • The calculation spine of Diploma chemistry taught in order, not topic by topic
  • Organic mechanisms drawn on a shared whiteboard both people can write on
  • Practical write-ups and the Scientific Investigation coached to the published criteria
  • Sessions timed to Barsha Heights bus returns, which decide when work can start

The part of chemistry the school day cannot hold

Chemistry has a structural problem that physics and biology have less of, and it shows up in every Dubai school. The subject demands laboratory work, and laboratory time is finite and timetabled. So the practical happens in school, under supervision, with a class of twenty and one teacher, and the processing, the calculations and the write-up go home. Everything that actually carries marks gets done in the evening, by a student who has been in school since seven and in a vehicle since half past four.

In Barsha Heights that evening is shorter than most. The community contains no large school campus, so secondary students are bussed outward to Al Barsha, Al Barsha South, Al Sufouh or further, and the return is a multi-stop route rather than a bell. Children are home somewhere between a quarter past five and six. A chemistry write-up with uncertainty calculations and a conclusion to argue is not a thing that gets done well at half past eight on a Tuesday, and over a term the consequence is visible.

What follows from that is a specific view of what a chemistry tutor is for. Not to reteach the lesson, which was probably fine. To close the gap between what happened in the laboratory and what the mark scheme wants on paper: the stoichiometry done properly, the uncertainty propagated rather than guessed, the mechanism drawn with the arrows starting in the right place, and the conclusion tied to the data rather than to what the textbook says should have happened.

Chemistry is also the Diploma science with the longest unbroken calculation spine, and that spine is why students who are fine in biology struggle here. Moles into concentration into titration arithmetic into equilibrium constants into enthalpy changes into rate expressions into pH and buffers into cell potentials. Each step assumes the previous one is automatic. A student who is hesitant at the second step pays for it at the seventh, and no amount of work on buffers fixes a mole problem.

On delivery: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we run only in India. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video, with the question, the working, the mechanism and the student's own draft on a shared surface. For chemistry specifically this format is genuinely well suited, because drawing a reaction mechanism together on a screen both people can write on is easier than two people reaching across one exercise book with one pen.

One last framing point before the detail. Nothing on this page claims that IB Gram is approved or accredited by any board or regulator, because it is not, and nothing here promises a grade, because no honest provider can. What the page contains instead is the order the chemistry calculations have to be learned in, what each examination component actually pays marks for, how a workable investigation question is tested before apparatus is booked, and the published Dubai market rates with their sources attached so you can check any quote you receive against them.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Four stages matter for a chemistry plan, and the right work differs sharply between them.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

Diploma Chemistry, Year One

Where the calculation spine is either built or not. Moles, concentration, titration arithmetic, empirical formula, limiting reagents and the start of energetics. A student who leaves DP1 without automatic mole handling will struggle through every later topic, because each one assumes it. This is the cheapest and most important chemistry year to get right.

Barsha Heights students arrive into DP1 from campuses across Al Barsha, Al Barsha South and Al Sufouh, on either an IGCSE or a Middle Years route. IGCSE students usually arrive with decent quantitative habits and little experience of designing an investigation; Middle Years students arrive with the opposite profile.

DP2Ages 17-18 · Year 13

Diploma Chemistry, Year Two

Equilibrium, kinetics, acids and bases, electrochemistry and organic chemistry, with the Scientific Investigation deadline underneath. The content is cumulative and the deadlines collide, which is why a plan for this year is mostly a sequencing problem rather than a question of how many hours.

Internal school deadlines for the investigation arrive well before anything the International Baccalaureate sets, and in Dubai they commonly land in the same weeks as other subjects' internal assessments. The Diploma coordinator publishes them, and any tutoring plan should be built backwards from that list.

The Scientific Investigation

Twenty per cent of the grade, marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each. In chemistry the research design criterion is the hardest to satisfy, because a question has to be measurable with school apparatus, chemically interesting enough to produce a trend, and safe enough for a school laboratory to permit.

That three-way constraint is why so many chemistry investigations end up being rate-of-reaction studies on the same handful of systems. A better question is usually available, and finding it is a conversation worth having before any apparatus is booked rather than after a first attempt fails.

AFTERAges 18 and beyond

What Chemistry Is Required For

Higher Level chemistry is the most commonly specified science requirement for medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and chemical engineering, and the grade rather than the experience is what an application uses. For many students in Dubai this is the single most consequential subject on their timetable, which is worth knowing before deciding how to prioritise an evening.

Requirements are set by each institution and vary. Most medical programmes in the United Kingdom specify chemistry at Higher Level, often with a minimum grade; UAE institutions including Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, the American University of Sharjah and Zayed University each publish their own, and the programme page is the authority rather than any tutoring provider.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Diploma chemistry breaks into areas that fail in very specific ways. These are the ones Barsha Heights students most often need, with the error that actually costs the marks.

Stoichiometric relationships

SL and HL

Moles, molar mass, concentration, gas volumes and limiting reagents. The foundation of everything else in the subject. Students who convert correctly but slowly become students who run out of time in Paper 2, and students who guess which reactant is limiting lose the whole question rather than part of it.

Titration arithmetic

SL and HL

Concentration from titre volume, back titrations and dilution factors. Appears in papers and in nearly every practical write-up. Marks go on dilution factors forgotten and on significant figures carried wrongly through a multi-step calculation, both of which are habits rather than concepts.

Energetics and thermochemistry

SL and HL

Enthalpy changes, calorimetry, Hess cycles and bond enthalpies, with entropy and Gibbs energy at Higher Level. Sign conventions are the standing error: a correct magnitude with the wrong sign earns little, and students who learn exothermic as a word rather than as a negative enthalpy change make it repeatedly.

Chemical kinetics

SL and HL

Rate measurement, collision theory and, at Higher Level, rate expressions, orders of reaction and the Arrhenius relationship. Determining order from data is the Higher Level separator, and students report a gradient without saying what it means, which is the error the mark scheme is built to catch.

Equilibrium

SL and HL

Le Chatelier's principle qualitatively, and at Higher Level the equilibrium constant with its calculations. Students explain a shift by restating the principle rather than reasoning through it, and they treat the constant as a number to compute rather than a quantity whose magnitude means something about position.

Acids and bases

SL and HL

pH, strong and weak behaviour, and at Higher Level buffers, titration curves and the dissociation constants. The densest calculation area in the whole subject and the one where a weak mole foundation finally becomes unmanageable. Worth attacking only once the earlier spine is secure.

Redox and electrochemistry

SL and HL

Oxidation states, half-equations, electrolysis and, at Higher Level, cell potentials and the Gibbs energy link. Half-equations that do not balance for charge as well as atoms are the recurring loss, and students routinely omit electrons entirely and still expect the equation to be accepted.

Organic chemistry and mechanisms

SL and HL

Homologous series, reaction types and, at Higher Level, nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition and the rest drawn with curly arrows. The arrows carry marks: they must start at a lone pair or a bond and end where the electrons go. This is the clearest case on the course for working on a shared drawing surface.

Structure, bonding and periodicity

SL and HL

Models of bonding, intermolecular forces, periodic trends and, at Higher Level, more depth on orbitals and transition metals. Marks go on explanations that name a trend rather than accounting for it through nuclear charge, shielding and atomic radius, which is a command-term problem.

Uncertainty and data processing

SL and HL, central to the investigation

Absolute and percentage uncertainty, propagation through a calculation, significant figures and error bars. Examined in Paper 1B and worth a large share of the investigation's data analysis criterion. Compact enough to teach in two or three sessions and worth a disproportionate number of marks.

Using the data booklet

SL and HL

A data booklet is provided in the examination, which changes what is worth memorising and what is worth practising finding quickly. Students lose time hunting for a value they could have located in seconds, and occasionally lose marks by using the wrong table. Deliberate practice with it is cheap and rarely done.

Higher Level extension content

HL only

Additional depth within each theme rather than a separate unit, with the heaviest load in equilibrium, acids and bases, electrochemistry and organic mechanisms. Higher Level grades are decided here, so a Higher Level student buying help with shared material is paying for the wrong half of their course.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Four ways Barsha Heights families use chemistry support, each tied to a specific failure rather than to the subject in general. All are one-to-one over live video.

Calculation spine, weekly in DP1

The arrangement that prevents most later problems. Moles, concentration, titration arithmetic, limiting reagents and empirical formula, practised until they are automatic rather than merely understood. Automatic is the operative word: a student who can do it slowly will run out of time in Paper 2 and will not cope with buffers in DP2.

  • 60 minutes weekly at 17:30 or 18:00, Gulf Standard Time
  • Calculation drills with the student working, not watching
  • Significant figures and units treated as marks rather than tidiness
  • A short written note afterwards naming the next step on the spine

Write-up and data-processing sessions

Aimed directly at the gap this page is about. The practical happened in school; the processing and the conclusion come home. These sessions take the student's own raw data, work through the uncertainty properly, test whether the conclusion follows, and leave the student able to do the next one unaided. The data and the words remain theirs.

  • Starts from the student's own raw results from a school practical
  • Uncertainty propagated rather than estimated, with error bars where appropriate
  • The conclusion tested against the data rather than against the textbook
  • Prepares Paper 1B at the same time, since the skills are the same

Organic mechanisms block

Three to five sessions on curly-arrow mechanisms, drawn together on a shared surface. Nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition and the Higher Level extensions. Arrows carry marks and have to start at a lone pair or a bond and end where the electrons actually go, which is a drawing discipline rather than a memory exercise.

  • Mechanisms drawn by the student and corrected stroke by stroke
  • Arrow origins and destinations treated as the marked feature
  • Reaction types grouped by mechanism rather than by functional group
  • Higher Level extensions added once the shared mechanisms are secure

Investigation design conversation

One or two sessions before any apparatus is booked, which saves more time than anything else on this list. A chemistry research question has to be measurable with school equipment, chemically interesting enough to produce a trend, and safe enough for the school to permit. Most failed investigations fail on one of those three before data collection begins.

  • The three-way constraint tested explicitly: measurable, interesting, safe
  • Variables and controls named before apparatus is requested
  • Expected trend predicted, so a flat result is recognised as a design fault
  • Held early, because a failed first attempt costs weeks the term does not have

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in TECOM

01

The gap between the laboratory and the write-up

  • Laboratory time is booked and shared; the processing is unsupervised and at home
  • Barsha Heights evenings start late, which is when the marked work gets done
  • Estimated rather than propagated uncertainty costs marks twice over
  • Paper 1B examines the same skills the write-up does, so the hours count twice

This is the specific thing a chemistry tutor in this community is usually solving, and it is worth describing precisely because it is not a teaching failure. Laboratory time in a Dubai school is timetabled, finite and shared with a class. The practical is performed under supervision, with apparatus that has been booked and a method that has been handed out. Then the raw data go home, and everything that carries marks happens there: processing, uncertainty, graphing, the conclusion and the evaluation.

In Barsha Heights the home end of that process is compressed. There is no large campus in the community, so students are bussed outward and return on multi-stop routes between a quarter past five and six. A write-up requiring uncertainty propagation and a reasoned conclusion is not work that goes well at half past eight after a full day and an hour in a vehicle. What tends to happen instead is that the processing gets done quickly, the uncertainty gets estimated rather than calculated, and the conclusion restates what the textbook says should have happened.

That pattern costs marks in two separate places, which is what makes it expensive. It costs marks in the school's own internal assessment of practical work, and it costs marks in Paper 1B, the data-based section of the examination paper, because Paper 1B tests exactly those skills. A student who never learns to propagate uncertainty properly will meet the same weakness in an examination hall where no one is available to help.

The useful intervention is therefore not more chemistry teaching. It is a session that takes the student's own raw results and goes through the processing properly once, then twice, until the student can do it unaided. Three or four of those sessions across DP1 generally settles the skill for the rest of the course, and it is the cheapest piece of chemistry support available because it pays into two components at once.

02

The calculation spine, and why order matters more than topics

Chemistry is the Diploma science with the longest unbroken sequence of dependent calculations, and that is the single most useful structural fact for planning tutoring. Most subjects can be attacked topic by topic in any order. Chemistry cannot, because each calculation type assumes the previous one is automatic. A student who is hesitant with moles will fail at buffers, and buffer teaching will not fix it.

The spine runs in a specific order. Moles and molar mass. Concentration and dilution. Titration arithmetic, including back titrations and dilution factors. Limiting reagents and percentage yield. Enthalpy changes through calorimetry and Hess cycles. Rate expressions and orders of reaction at Higher Level. Equilibrium constants. pH, weak acid dissociation and buffers. Cell potentials. Every one of those uses the output of an earlier step as its input.

The practical consequence for a family is that a diagnosis has to find the earliest broken step rather than the most recently taught topic. Students almost always present with the latest thing: buffers are hard, equilibrium calculations do not work. The tutor's job in the first session is to walk back down the spine until the arithmetic becomes fluent, and then start teaching from there. That is often three topics earlier than the complaint, and it is why the first session should be a diagnostic rather than a lesson on the stated problem.

It also explains a common and expensive mistake. A family buys five sessions on acids and bases because that is where the test went badly. The sessions are competently taught and the next test goes badly too, because the student was converting concentrations slowly and unreliably the whole time. Five sessions on mole fluency would have fixed both. Finding the earliest broken step is the whole value of a diagnostic in this subject.

What each chemistry component rewards

Diploma chemistry is assessed through Paper 1, worth 36% and divided into Paper 1A multiple choice and Paper 1B data-based questions, through Paper 2 at 44%, and through the Scientific Investigation at 20%. Higher Level adds extension content within each theme rather than a separate paper. Confirm these against the current subject guide with your school's Diploma coordinator, since the International Baccalaureate revises its guides.

The table below is organised around what each component actually rewards rather than around its weighting alone, because that is the information that decides how an hour is spent. Paper 1A rewards recognition of the misconceptions the syllabus builds its distractors from, which is coachable from past papers at low cost. Paper 1B rewards uncertainty, graphing and method evaluation, which is the same skill set as the investigation and therefore double value. Paper 2 rewards worked calculation and explanation with the reasoning visible.

One chemistry-specific point changes revision strategy and is often missed. A data booklet is provided in the examination. That means certain values do not need memorising, and that locating the right table quickly is itself a skill. Students lose minutes hunting for a constant they could have found in seconds, and occasionally lose marks by reading from the wrong table. Twenty minutes of deliberate practice with the booklet is among the cheapest marks on the course.

The other chemistry-specific point is drawing. Organic mechanisms carry marks in the arrows, not only in the products. An arrow has to start at a lone pair or a bond and end where the electrons go, and a mechanism with the right products and misplaced arrows scores poorly. That is a drawing discipline, and it is the reason a shared digital surface, where tutor and student can both draw on the same structure, is a genuine advantage rather than a substitute for paper.

Designing a chemistry investigation that can actually work

  • Three constraints at once: measurable with school apparatus, chemically interesting, safe
  • Research design carries six of the 24 marks and is fixed before data exist
  • Predict the expected trend; if it is smaller than the achievable precision, redesign
  • Variables and controls named before apparatus is requested, not afterwards
  • The question, the method and the words are the student's; a tutor questions and marks

The research design criterion carries six of the investigation's 24 marks and is decided before any data exist, which makes it the highest-leverage conversation in the component. In chemistry it is also harder to satisfy than in physics or biology, because a research question has to clear three constraints at once: it must be measurable with school apparatus, chemically interesting enough to produce a trend worth analysing, and safe enough for a school laboratory to permit.

Most failed chemistry investigations fail on one of those three, and they fail before data collection rather than during analysis. A question that cannot be measured precisely enough produces a flat result with uncertainty bars larger than the effect. A question that is safe and measurable but chemically trivial produces a trend nobody can analyse interestingly. A question that is interesting and measurable may involve a reagent the school will not issue to a student. All three are foreseeable in a single conversation.

That is why a design session held before apparatus is booked is worth more than three sessions of rescue afterwards. The session tests the question against each constraint, names the independent and dependent variables and the controls, and predicts the expected trend. Predicting the trend is the step students skip and the one that matters most, because if the expected effect is smaller than the achievable precision, the investigation is already finished and nobody has noticed.

On the limits of what a tutor may do here: the design must be the student's. A tutor may explain the criteria, ask whether a variable is genuinely controlled, point out that a reagent is unlikely to be available, and question whether an expected trend exceeds the measurement precision. A tutor may not choose the research question, design the method, process the data or write any part of the submission. The student and the school declare the work authentic, and a breach is a malpractice finding against your child.

05

Organic mechanisms and why the drawing surface matters

Organic chemistry is where able Diploma students most often lose marks they believe they have earned, and the reason is almost always the arrows. A mechanism question is marked on the electron movement, not only on the final products. An arrow must begin at a lone pair or at a bond and must end where those electrons actually go. A student who draws the right products with arrows starting from an atom rather than from its lone pair has drawn something chemically wrong, and the mark scheme treats it that way.

That is a drawing discipline rather than a memory problem, and it is taught by drawing. Explaining a mechanism verbally produces a student who can recite it and cannot draw it. The teaching that works is the student drawing, the tutor correcting stroke by stroke, and the student drawing it again. Repeated across a handful of mechanisms, the discipline generalises, and it generalises because the rules about where arrows start and end are the same in every mechanism on the course.

It also helps to group the content by mechanism rather than by functional group, which is not how most textbooks arrange it. Nucleophilic substitution behaves the same way whether the substrate is a halogenoalkane in one question or another in the next. Electrophilic addition follows one pattern across alkenes. A student who has learned twelve reactions as twelve separate facts has a memory problem; a student who has learned four mechanisms has a system.

This is the clearest case on the whole chemistry course for the shared digital surface an online session provides. Two people drawing on the same structure, each able to add an arrow, is practically better than two people with one pen reaching across a single exercise book. We mention it because families reasonably assume that practical-looking subjects suffer online, and for mechanism work the opposite is true.

06

What chemistry support costs, and what a good trial and a good invoice contain

Two checks protect a family in this market more than any review page: what the free trial actually produces, and what the invoice actually says. Both are checkable before money moves, and both are where the difference between a specialist and a general tutor becomes visible. Before that, here is the published market, every figure credited to the provider that published it and read in October 2026, none of it IB Gram's price list.

Budget online and university-student tutoring runs roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik advertising from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. Qualified subject tutors online sit at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing International Baccalaureate from AED 200. Specialists across IB, IGCSE and A Level run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. BartyED publishes AED 650 at the premium end. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and AED 200 to 500 for independent home tutors, travel included.

A good trial session, whoever provides it, produces a written output rather than a feeling. It should name the earliest broken step on the calculation spine rather than the most recently taught topic, because in chemistry those are usually different. It should say how many sessions the fix realistically needs. And it should be spent with the student working rather than watching, because a diagnosis made from a conversation is a guess. If a trial produces only reassurance, you have learned something about the provider.

A good invoice states the session length, the rate for that length rather than an hourly rate applied to a different duration, and the VAT position. A ninety-minute session billed at an hourly rate is one and a half times the quoted figure, and a price with no stated tax treatment is not a price. Ask for all three in writing before the first paid session. Every provider who answers plainly has made the comparison with others easier, which is the point.

Chemistry for medicine, and what that means for priorities

  • Higher Level chemistry is the most commonly specified science requirement for medicine
  • Requirements are set by each institution; the published programme page is the authority
  • The British-track equivalency rule names five subjects at no less than E or grade 3
  • Arabic and Islamic education are excluded from that count of five
  • No International Baccalaureate equivalency points figure is published here, because none is verified

A large proportion of Dubai Diploma students taking Higher Level chemistry are taking it because a medical, dental, pharmacy or chemical engineering application requires it. That is worth naming because it changes how a family should prioritise a crowded evening. If one subject on the timetable is the gate for the whole application, it is reasonable for it to get the protected hour rather than the leftover one.

The requirements themselves belong to the institutions and not to us. Most medical programmes in the United Kingdom specify chemistry at Higher Level, frequently with a stated minimum grade and often alongside a second science or mathematics. UAE institutions, including Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, the American University of Sharjah and Zayed University, publish their own admissions requirements, as do universities elsewhere. The published programme page is the authority, and no tutoring provider should be substituting a general claim for it.

There is a second, quieter requirement that catches Dubai families later, which is Ministry of Education equivalency for students who go on to apply to UAE universities. The sourced British-track rule, for students on that path, is five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade of no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five, plus one A Level at no less than E or two AS Levels at the same grade. No International Baccalaureate points threshold has been verified from an official source, so none is published here.

Two cautions belong with that. IB Gram does not perform equivalency or attestation, does not guarantee any outcome in it, and nothing here should be read as our doing it on your behalf: the process belongs to the Ministry and the emirate attestation authority, and you should verify the current rules with them. And nobody, including us, should suggest that tutoring is required for university admission or for equivalency. It is not, and a claim that it is would be a false-urgency claim about a regulatory process.

08

Honesty boundaries, copyright and what we decline

Chemistry is one of the subjects where the market around Dubai crosses lines, because write-ups and investigations are discrete documents that somebody could simply produce. Research for this project found a provider selling completed Internal Assessments outright at a published price. That is not tutoring; it is an academic-integrity breach whose malpractice consequences fall on the student rather than the seller.

The legitimate boundary is easy to apply. A tutor may teach content, explain the assessment criteria, work through a calculation method, question whether a variable is controlled, check whether uncertainty has been handled correctly, ask whether a conclusion follows from the data, mark the student's own draft, and correct a mechanism the student has drawn. A workable test is whether your child's own teacher could do the same thing openly in a lesson.

A tutor may not design the investigation, process the raw data on the student's behalf, write any section of a write-up or report, dictate answers for transcription, or edit prose until the words are no longer the student's. Nor may anybody legitimately distribute International Baccalaureate subject guides, past papers, mark schemes, data booklets or grade-boundary documents as downloads, because those are the IB's copyright. We reference them, link to the official source and work from them inside a session.

On status: IB Gram is not approved, accredited, certified or licensed by the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge, Pearson, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, MoHRE or the Ministry of Education, and claims none of those relationships. We run no office, centre or branch in the UAE. Private tutoring here is regulated by permit: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, and individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published fine schedule.

09

Booking, timing and the limits we state first

  • Send a recent write-up with its raw data; in chemistry it beats a marked paper
  • Free trial with the student working, then a written note of the earliest broken step
  • No hour count before the diagnostic, because that number would be invented
  • 17:30 and 18:00 slots secured in term one, before the second term takes them
  • Coverage limits named with a date rather than discovered after booking

Send the level, the component causing the problem, and either a marked paper or a recent write-up with its raw data. The write-up is often the more useful document in chemistry, because it shows whether the uncertainty was propagated or estimated and whether the conclusion was argued or asserted, neither of which a marked multiple-choice section reveals. The first session is free and is spent on that material with the student working.

You then receive a short written note naming the earliest broken step on the calculation spine, which is frequently several topics earlier than the complaint, together with a realistic session estimate. We do not quote an hour count before that, because a figure produced before anybody has seen the evidence is invented. If the honest answer is four sessions on mole fluency rather than a term on acids and bases, the note will say so.

Scheduling follows the bus. Barsha Heights students return on multi-stop routes between a quarter past five and six, so the workable slots are 17:30 and 18:00, and those are the most heavily demanded tutoring hours in the Dubai year with demand peaking in the second term. Securing one in term one costs nothing extra. Investigation and write-up work often moves to weekend mornings, which suits sustained processing better than a weekday evening after a commute.

Two limits worth knowing. Higher Level chemistry specialists for a specific weekend hour are among the thinner combinations we staff, and we will give you a date rather than take a booking and hope. And if no UAE-based tutor is free for your combination, we will say whether a tutor based elsewhere can cover your hour in Gulf Standard Time, and you may decline. IB Gram runs no home visits in Dubai; every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video. During Ramadan, sessions move to post-Iftar slots for families who want them there.

Where we tutor

Barsha Heights and the corridor its students travel

What matters for chemistry is when a student can sit down with a write-up, which the bus route decides. These are the communities in the same corridor.

Barsha Heights (TECOM)

Towers with no campus inside them. Multi-stop bus routes bring students home between a quarter past five and six, which puts a serious write-up session realistically at 17:30 or later.

Dubai Internet City and Media City

Largely commercial with residential towers and the same outward commute. Parents working locally often prefer an 18:30 slot so they are home while the session runs.

Al Barsha 1 and 2

South across the interchange, where several destination campuses sit. The crossing peaks exactly when buses return, which is why arrival times here vary by twenty minutes day to day.

Al Barsha South

Further inland with several large campuses. The longest common run from Barsha Heights, and the one that reliably pushes chemistry work past seven o'clock on a school night.

Al Sufouh and Knowledge Village

North towards the coast, a shorter run, holding several of the larger Diploma campuses. Families here have the most usable weekday evenings in this corridor.

The Greens and The Views

Across Sheikh Zayed Road, compact apartment communities with a significant Diploma population and the same squeezed evening after a commute.

Dubai Marina and JBR

Along the coast, dense and tower-based. Higher Level chemistry demand peaks across the whole corridor at the same hours, which is what makes second-term evenings scarce.

Jumeirah Lake Towers

Opposite the Marina across the highway, with a comparable commute and few local tutors who have taught Higher Level organic mechanisms to examination.

Emirates Hills and The Meadows

Villa communities inland with long drives in every direction, where almost every family settles on online scheduling during term rather than a fixed in-person appointment.

Al Quoz

Mixed residential and light industrial to the south-east, with heavy cross-traffic at pickup and the least predictable arrival times in the corridor.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in TECOM

The Al Barsha destinations

The nearest cluster and the most common bus destination from Barsha Heights. For chemistry the relevant variable is laboratory access: how often a cohort actually gets practical time, and whether write-ups are started in school or taken home entirely, which varies more between campuses than parents expect.

  • GEMS Dubai American Academy
  • American School of Dubai
  • Al Mawakeb School Al Barsha
  • Dubai National School Al Barsha
  • Repton Al Barsha

The coastal and Al Sufouh campuses

Several of the larger International Baccalaureate campuses in this part of Dubai, with bigger Higher Level chemistry cohorts and generally more laboratory capacity. Students here more often need investigation coaching than content teaching, which is a different and usually shorter purchase.

  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Raffles World Academy
  • Dubai College
  • Emirates International School Jumeirah
  • Regent International School

The Al Barsha South and inland campuses

The longest bus runs and a mix of Diploma and A Level sixth forms. Higher Level chemistry sets here can be small, which means fewer tutors within driving range have taught the extension content, and a wider online pool is the honest alternative to a nearby compromise.

  • Safa Community School
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Sunmarke School

Schools are named to describe where Barsha Heights students travel and the programmes those campuses run. IB Gram has no affiliation with, endorsement from, or commercial relationship with any school named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send a write-up, not just a grade

A recent practical write-up with its raw data is the most informative document in chemistry, because it shows whether uncertainty was propagated or estimated, whether significant figures survived the calculation, and whether the conclusion was argued from the data or borrowed from the textbook. A grade reveals none of that.

  2. 02

    Find the earliest broken step

Students present with the latest topic and the cause is usually three steps earlier on the calculation spine. The first session walks back from the complaint until the arithmetic becomes fluent, then teaches forward from there. Buying five sessions on buffers when the problem is mole fluency is the standard expensive mistake in this subject.

  3. 03

Match the level and the component

Higher Level chemistry adds depth within each theme rather than a separate paper, with the heaviest extension load in equilibrium, acids and bases, electrochemistry and organic mechanisms. A Higher Level student buying help with shared material is paying for the wrong half of the course, so we match on both.

  4. 04

Free diagnostic with the student working

The first session is unpaid and is spent on the student's own material, attempting rather than watching, because a diagnosis made from a conversation is a guess. The output is a written note naming the broken step and a realistic session count, which you read before committing anything.

  5. 05

Design the investigation before apparatus is booked

One session testing the research question against three constraints, measurable with school equipment, chemically interesting, and safe enough to be permitted, plus a predicted trend. If the expected effect is smaller than the achievable precision, the investigation is already finished and nobody has noticed. That session saves weeks.

  6. 06

Review on the next marked piece

Progress is measured on the next thing the school marks, whether that is a paper section or a write-up. If the step we worked on has not moved, the approach was wrong and we change it rather than adding hours. Reviews are written and brief, so there is a record rather than a recollection.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The calculation spine taught in order

Chemistry is the Diploma science with the longest chain of dependent calculations, from moles through to cell potentials, each step assuming the last is automatic. Sessions start at the earliest broken step rather than the most recently taught topic, which is the difference between five useful sessions and five competently wasted ones.

The write-up gap closed deliberately

Laboratory time is booked and shared; the processing, uncertainty and conclusion happen at home, late, in a community whose children get back near six. Sessions take the student's own raw data and work it properly, which also prepares Paper 1B because the skills examined there are identical.

Mechanisms drawn, not described

Organic marks sit in the arrows, which must start at a lone pair or a bond and end where the electrons go. That is a drawing discipline taught by drawing, with the student drawing and the tutor correcting stroke by stroke on a shared surface, which is practically better than two people and one pen.

Investigation design tested before apparatus

A chemistry research question has to be measurable, interesting and safe at the same time, and most failed investigations fail on one of those before any data exist. One session predicting the expected trend against the achievable precision prevents the most common waste of weeks in the component.

Rates attributed and the invoice spelled out

Every AED figure here is credited to the provider that published it and dated to October 2026, and none is our price list. We also publish what a good invoice contains, session length, the rate for that length, and the VAT position, so you can compare any provider including us on the same terms.

University and equivalency claims left with their owners

Requirements belong to institutions, and the published programme page is the authority. The British-track equivalency rule is set out as sourced, no International Baccalaureate points figure is published because none is verified, and nothing here suggests tutoring is required for admission or equivalency, because it is not.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in TECOM: your questions answered

Why does my child struggle with chemistry write-ups rather than lessons?+

Because the two happen in different places. Laboratory time in a Dubai school is timetabled, finite and shared with a class, so the practical is supervised and the processing is not. The raw data go home, and the uncertainty, graphing, conclusion and evaluation get done in an evening that in Barsha Heights starts near six because the bus collects from several communities first. The lesson was probably fine. What is missing is the unsupervised half, which happens to be the half that carries the marks.

Which chemistry topic should we actually start with?+

Almost certainly an earlier one than the topic that went badly. Chemistry has the longest chain of dependent calculations of the three Diploma sciences, running from moles and concentration through titration arithmetic and limiting reagents to energetics, equilibrium, buffers and cell potentials, with each step assuming the previous one is automatic. A student failing at buffers is usually converting concentrations slowly and unreliably. Five sessions on buffers will be competently taught and will not help, which is why the first session has to be a diagnostic.

What does Paper 2 reward in IB chemistry?+

Worked calculation and explanation with the reasoning visible. It carries 44% of the grade, the largest single component, and marks are distributed through the steps rather than sitting on the final answer, so a correct result with no working forfeits most of them. Explanations are judged against command terms: a question asking you to explain a periodic trend wants nuclear charge, shielding and atomic radius, not a restatement of the trend. Confirm the weightings against the current subject guide with your Diploma coordinator.

How do organic mechanism marks actually work?+

They sit in the arrows. An arrow must begin at a lone pair or at a bond and must end where those electrons go, and a mechanism with correct products but misplaced arrows is chemically wrong and marked as such. This is a drawing discipline rather than a memory exercise, which means it is taught by the student drawing and the tutor correcting stroke by stroke. Grouping the content by mechanism rather than by functional group also helps: four mechanisms is a system, twelve reactions is a memory problem.

Can organic chemistry really be taught over video?+

Better than on paper, for mechanisms specifically. The work requires two people drawing on the same structure, each adding and correcting arrows, which a shared digital surface does well and a single exercise book with one pen does badly. We mention it because families reasonably assume that practical-looking subjects suffer online. For mechanism work the opposite holds, and for calculation work the ability to keep a worked example on screen while the student attempts the next one is a genuine advantage.

What makes a good chemistry investigation question?+

One that clears three constraints at once: measurable with school apparatus, chemically interesting enough to produce a trend worth analysing, and safe enough for the school to permit. Most failed chemistry investigations fail on one of those before data collection rather than during analysis. The step students skip is predicting the expected trend and comparing it to the achievable precision. If the effect is smaller than the measurement uncertainty, the investigation is finished before it starts and nobody has noticed yet.

How much of the chemistry grade is the investigation worth?+

Twenty per cent, marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Research design is fixed before any data exist, which is why a single design conversation held before apparatus is booked saves more time than any amount of rescue work afterwards. The criteria being equal in weight also means evaluation cannot be a closing paragraph, and in most first drafts we read, that is exactly what it is.

Does the data booklet change how my child should revise?+

Yes, and in a way most students never think about. A data booklet is provided in the examination, so certain values do not need memorising and locating the right table quickly becomes a skill in itself. Students lose minutes hunting for a constant they could have found in seconds, and occasionally lose marks by reading from the wrong table altogether. Twenty minutes of deliberate practice with the booklet, done once, is among the cheapest marks available anywhere on the course.

What does Higher Level chemistry add?+

Additional depth within each theme rather than a separate paper, with the heaviest extension load in equilibrium, acids and bases, electrochemistry and organic mechanisms. The component weightings stay the same. The practical consequence is that Higher Level grades are decided in the extension content, so a Higher Level student paying for help with the shared material is paying for the wrong half of their course. Secure the shared content cheaply first, then buy specialist help for the extension depth.

Is Higher Level chemistry needed for medicine?+

Most medical programmes in the United Kingdom specify chemistry at Higher Level, frequently with a minimum grade and often alongside a second science or mathematics, but requirements belong to the institutions and the published programme page is the authority. UAE institutions including Khalifa University, United Arab Emirates University, the American University of Sharjah and Zayed University each publish their own. Do not accept a general claim from any tutoring provider, including this one, in place of reading the requirement yourself.

What should a free chemistry trial lesson actually produce?+

A written output, not a feeling. It should name the earliest broken step on the calculation spine rather than the most recently taught topic, because in chemistry those are usually different. It should say how many sessions the fix realistically needs. And the student should be working rather than watching, because a diagnosis made from a conversation is a guess. If a trial produces only reassurance that your child is capable, you have learned something useful about the provider instead.

What should a tutoring invoice in Dubai state?+

Three things, in writing, before the first paid session. The session length, which matters because a ninety-minute session billed at an hourly rate is one and a half times the quoted figure. The rate for that length rather than a general hourly figure. And the VAT position, because a price with no stated tax treatment is not a price. Published Dubai rates read in October 2026 run from roughly AED 45 to 150 at the budget floor up to AED 650 at the premium end, so you also have a band to check any quote against.

What do Barsha Heights families pay for chemistry support?+

Published Dubai figures read in October 2026 put qualified online subject tutors at roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors listing International Baccalaureate from AED 200, and specialists at AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase at AED 270 and BartyED publishing AED 650. Budget online options run AED 45 to 150. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 350 by Bestimate and AED 200 to 500 for independent home tutors, travel included. None of those is IB Gram's price; we start with a free trial and a consultation.

When can chemistry sessions run for a Barsha Heights student?+

Usually 17:30 or 18:00. The community contains no large school campus, so students are bussed outward and return on multi-stop routes between a quarter past five and six rather than at a bell. Write-up and investigation work often moves to weekend mornings, which suits sustained data processing considerably better than a weekday evening after a full day and a commute. Those evening slots are the most demanded in the Dubai year, so arranging one in term one rather than February secures it at no extra cost.

Can you write up my child's practical if they are short of time?+

No, and nobody legitimately can. A tutor may explain the criteria, work through a calculation method, question whether a variable was controlled, check whether uncertainty has been propagated correctly, ask whether a conclusion follows from the data and mark the student's own draft. A tutor may not process the raw data, write any section, or edit prose until the words are no longer the student's. The student and the school declare the work authentic, and a breach is a malpractice finding against your child rather than against us.

Close the gap between the lab and the page

The practical happens in school with a teacher in the room. The calculations, the uncertainty and the conclusion happen at home in an evening that starts late because the bus collects from three communities before yours. That gap is where chemistry grades go, and it is also the cheapest thing to fix, because the same skills are examined again in Paper 1B. Send us the level and a recent write-up with its raw data, and the free trial lesson will be spent on it with your child working. You will finish with a written note naming the earliest broken step on the calculation spine, which is usually earlier than you expect, and a realistic session count. Lessons are one-to-one online, in Gulf Standard Time.
