IGCSE Science Tutor in Dubai Media City

Parents looking for an IGCSE science tutor in Dubai Media City are usually asking whether anyone nearby knows the exact award their child was entered for. It is a fair worry: triple science, double award and combined science are different qualifications with different codes and different practical arrangements. This page shows how to find out which one applies, where marks actually go in each science, and how one-to-one lessons over live video in Gulf Standard Time widen the pool beyond Al Sufouh.

  • Matched to the award and the syllabus code, not to the word science
  • Triage across three sciences rather than an even split of the hour
  • Practical skill prepared as the written papers actually assess it
  • Free trial lesson on a real question from your child's paper

IB & IGCSE in Dubai Media City

Three sciences, several awards, and the code that settles it

IGCSE science is not one qualification. A student in Year 10 in Dubai may be taking three separate sciences, each with its own syllabus code and its own grade; or a double award covering all three sciences and producing two grades; or a single combined award producing one. Cambridge codes the separate sciences 0610 Biology, 0620 Chemistry and 0625 Physics, with Co-ordinated Sciences at 0654 as a double award and Combined Science at 0653. Pearson Edexcel uses 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1 for the separate sciences, with a Double Award science qualification alongside.

That matters because the awards are not scaled versions of each other. The content per mark differs, the number of papers differs, the depth expected in each discipline differs, and the way practical skill is assessed differs between boards. A tutor who has taught separate Cambridge Physics for years and is handed a Co-ordinated Sciences candidate will teach good physics and misjudge the depth required, which costs marks on a paper that is pitched differently.

Finding out takes a day. Email the school's examinations officer and ask which science award your child is entered for, on which board, with which syllabus codes. Or look at the front of any past paper they have been given: the code is printed there. Then ask a prospective tutor which award they teach and when they last taught it. A specialist answers with the number. A generalist says the science is the same, which is partly true and is not an answer.

The geography side of the question has no local answer. Dubai Media City is a free zone of offices and studios in Al Sufouh between Sheikh Zayed Road and the sea, with Dubai Internet City inland and Dubai Knowledge Park along the tram line. It has residential towers and no school. Children travel out to Dubai College and GEMS Wellington International School next door, into the Al Barsha cluster, or to the villa belt schools, and the nearest tuition centres are inland.

The British curriculum is the largest in this city, with KHDA's 2024-25 figures putting 37 per cent of private school enrolment on it across 387,441 students in 227 schools, so there is no shortage of adults who can teach this material. The shortage is of a match to the specific award, held in a slot the household can keep, with marking against the right scheme. That is a sourcing problem rather than a supply problem.

On delivery: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. Lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, usually between 4.30pm and 9pm on school nights, which is what lets the match be made on the award rather than on who can cross Al Sufouh before six.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

At 14 to 16 in this corridor, science is being taught in one of these forms, and each produces a different kind of tutoring request.

SEPAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Separate sciences

Three qualifications with three grades: Cambridge 0610 Biology, 0620 Chemistry and 0625 Physics, or Pearson 4BI1, 4CH1 and 4PH1. The deepest route, the usual expectation for students heading to A Level or IB sciences, and the heaviest content load in a Year 11 timetable. Preparation is paper-shaped and discipline-specific.

Most students in this corridor who intend to take sciences at 16 are on the separate route, and the schools around Media City generally offer it to students who can carry the load. The practical consequence for tutoring is that triage matters: a student on three sciences rarely needs help in all three, and spreading one hour across them helps none.

DBLAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Double award science

Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654 or Pearson's Double Award: all three disciplines, producing two grades. Students expect it to be easier than three separate sciences and find the content per mark denser, because the breadth is retained while the time is not. It is a sensible choice for a student who needs science but is not specialising in it.

This is the award most often misidentified by families and by tutors in Dubai, because the subject name on a report card can look like separate sciences. If your child has two science grades rather than three or one, the double award is almost certainly what they are on, and that changes the depth a tutor should be teaching to.

CMBAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Combined science

Cambridge Combined Science 0653 or an equivalent single award: all three disciplines, one grade. The lightest science route, usually taken alongside more subjects elsewhere in the timetable. It does not normally support entry to A Level or IB sciences, which is the fact families most often discover late.

If a student on combined science wants to take a science at 16, the gap has to be addressed deliberately rather than hoped away. A short bridging block after the papers, in the final term of Year 11, is the cheap version; discovering it in Year 12 is not. Confirm the sixth form's entry expectation before assuming it is possible.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 4 and MYP 5

MYP Sciences as the alternative

At IB continuum schools, science at this age is marked against four criteria out of eight, with criterion B wanting a repeatable method and criterion C the processing and evaluation of the student's own data. There is no public paper in most subjects, so the tutoring job is criterion literacy rather than past-paper technique.

Some Dubai IB schools run the MYP for all five years and others enter students for IGCSE at 16 anyway, so children in the same tower can be on different systems. A tutor matched for criterion work is a poor fit for paper practice and vice versa, which makes the examinations officer's answer worth having before you buy.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the science subjects and components families in this corridor ask about, with codes where relevant and the specific places marks disappear.

Biology

Cambridge 0610; Pearson 4BI1

Heavy content tested through exact command terms. Writing everything known about a process scores below answering the question asked. Data interpretation and experiment-description questions are the cheapest marks available and the ones least often practised deliberately, which makes biology the quickest science to improve in a short block.

Chemistry

Cambridge 0620; Pearson 4CH1

Moles calculations, ionic equations and the qualitative analysis tables. Students memorise reactions and stall on an unfamiliar substance. Multi-step mole problems where the limiting reagent is not signposted are a reliable loss, and so is the qualitative analysis section, which rewards rote learning that students assume is beneath them.

Physics

Cambridge 0625; Pearson 4PH1

Electricity and waves are the complaints; unit handling and equation rearrangement under time pressure are the actual problems. Graph questions want a gradient with the triangle shown and units stated, and students leave both implicit. Explanation questions reward reasoning written out rather than held in the head.

Co-ordinated and Combined Sciences

Cambridge 0654 and 0653

All three disciplines in a compressed award. The content per mark is denser than students expect and the depth is pitched differently from the separate sciences, which is why award-matched tutoring matters. Triage across the three disciplines produces more than an even split of the hour.

Experimental skills and investigations

All awards, in the written papers

Describing a method precisely enough to repeat, identifying independent, dependent and control variables, reading instruments correctly, tabulating, plotting and evaluating limitations. Every one of these is a paper skill, examined in writing, and improves fastest with live marking against the official scheme.

Graph and data work

All awards

Axes with units, sensible scales, lines of best fit, gradients calculated with the triangle shown, and conclusions that evaluate rather than restate. Mechanical losses here are among the most common in the whole science paper and among the easiest to stop permanently with a checklist.

Calculations across the three sciences

All awards

Rearranging formulae, unit prefixes, standard form, percentage and ratio work. A student whose algebra is slow looks weak in science, because every numerical question becomes an arithmetic race. Diagnosing this correctly often saves a term of misdirected science teaching.

Command terms

All awards

State, describe, explain, suggest, compare, calculate and evaluate each ask for a different shape and quantity of answer. Students treat explain and describe as synonyms, which costs marks in every paper of every science. One session on command terms often recovers more than a month of content revision.

Qualitative analysis and practical recall

Chemistry especially

Flame colours, precipitate colours, gas tests and the reagents that produce them. It is pure recall, it is examined, and students resist learning it because it feels unsophisticated. A fortnight of five-minute daily drilling usually handles it, and it is worth insisting on.

Required practicals and alternative arrangements

Varies by board and centre

Cambridge centres run either a practical arrangement or an alternative-to-practical arrangement depending on what the centre offers, while Pearson assesses practical skills through the written papers. Ask the school which applies, because it changes what a tutor should prepare and what remains the school's responsibility.

Sixth-form bridging

After the papers, Year 11 summer term

The gap between an IGCSE science grade and the start of A Level or IB science, which both assume more quantitative fluency than the IGCSE examined. A short block after the papers, when nothing else is competing for the time, is the cheapest and least popular intervention available.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns of IGCSE science support that work in this corridor, all delivered one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.

Single-science weekly hour

One hour a week in the one science that is actually dragging the grade, chosen by triage rather than by feeling. This is the default and the most effective purchase, because a student on three sciences who splits one hour across all three gets twenty minutes each and no momentum in any of them.

  • Fixed weekly hour, usually 4.30pm to 8pm Gulf Standard Time
  • Triage decided from marked work, not from which science feels worst
  • Work from the school's scheme plus board-matched past papers
  • Recorded, so a practical-method session can be replayed

Experimental-skills block

Four to six sessions on method description, variables, instrument reading, tabulation, graphing and evaluation, which is how practical skill is assessed in writing. It applies across all three sciences at once, which makes it the best-value block available to a student on a double or combined award.

  • Method written precisely enough for a stranger to repeat
  • Variables identified in every question, as a habit
  • Graph checklist: axes, units, scale, line of best fit, gradient with triangle
  • Evaluation taught as a structure rather than a list of errors

Year 11 paper programme

A timed paper or section every week in the target science, marked line by line with the student against the official scheme, with an error log that becomes the revision document for the series. Content reteaching happens only where the papers prove a gap exists.

  • One full paper or section under time every week
  • Marked live against the board's own scheme
  • Command-term drilling specific to the award
  • A running error log the student revises from alone

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Dubai Media City

01

The first question is which science award, not which tutor

  • Count the science grades: three, two or one identifies the award
  • Then confirm the board and syllabus codes with the examinations officer
  • A specialist answers with a code; a generalist talks about content overlap
  • Award depth, not just content, is what a matched tutor brings

An IGCSE science tutor in Dubai Media City is only useful once the award is identified. Three separate sciences, a double award and a combined award are different qualifications with different codes, different paper counts and different expected depth. A tutor teaching separate-science depth to a Co-ordinated Sciences candidate wastes the student's time on material the paper will not reward, and a tutor doing the reverse leaves marks on the table.

Parents reasonably assume the school has made this clear. In practice the award is often named once, in a letter, in Year 9, and the report card afterwards says Science. The quickest way to settle it is to count the grades: three science grades means separate sciences, two means a double award, one means combined. Then confirm it with the examinations officer and ask for the syllabus codes.

Once you have the codes, the question to a prospective tutor is short. Which award do you teach this on, which board, and when did you last teach it. A specialist answers with 0620 or 4CH1 or 0654. A generalist says the content is broadly the same across awards, which is true of the chemistry and false of the paper, and the difference is what Year 11 marks are made of.

Nothing about this is helped by proximity. Media City has no school in it, the nearest centres are inland in Al Barsha, and whether a tutor lives in Al Sufouh has no bearing on which award they know. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India, and lessons run over live video in Gulf Standard Time so the pool is everyone teaching in this time zone.

02

The awards side by side, with codes

The table below sets out the main options a Dubai family will encounter, with the Cambridge and Pearson equivalents and what each implies for a student heading to sixth form. Treat it as the shape of the landscape and confirm the specific syllabus version with your child's school, because specifications are revised and centres choose between options.

The most consequential row is the last one. Separate sciences are the usual expectation for A Level or IB science entry. A double award is often acceptable with a good grade. A single combined award frequently is not, and that is the fact families most often discover in Year 12 rather than Year 10. If a science at 16 is even a possibility, the award question needs asking early.

The second thing to notice is that the awards differ in depth as well as breadth. A Co-ordinated Sciences paper covers all three disciplines but does not go as deep in any of them, which changes what revision should look like: breadth with reliable basics beats depth in a favourite discipline. Students who revise their strongest science hardest are a common and expensive pattern in double-award cohorts.

Finally, the practical arrangement varies. Cambridge centres run either a practical arrangement or an alternative-to-practical arrangement depending on what the centre offers, and Pearson assesses practical skills through the written papers. Ask the school which applies to your child, because it determines what a tutor should prepare and what remains school business.

Practical skill, and what an online tutor can honestly prepare

  • Practical understanding is assessed in writing in both boards' International GCSE sciences
  • Method, variables, instrument resolution, tabulation, graphs and evaluation are all paper skills
  • The usual losses are mechanical and respond to a checklist plus live marking
  • Laboratory work stays with the school; tutoring should not pretend otherwise

This is the reasonable objection to online science tutoring and it deserves a direct answer. A tutor over video cannot stand beside a student at a bench while they set up a titration or wire a circuit. What they can do is prepare the student for how practical skill is actually assessed, which in an examination is on paper.

Both boards test practical understanding in writing. Pearson assesses practical skills through the written papers for its International GCSE sciences. Cambridge centres run either a practical arrangement or an alternative-to-practical arrangement, and in both cases the written demand has the same shape: describe a method precisely enough to be repeated, identify independent, dependent and control variables, read a measuring instrument to its resolution, tabulate with units in the headers, plot, calculate a gradient, and evaluate the method's limitations.

Every one of those is screen-shareable, and every one improves fastest with live marking against the official scheme. The most common losses are mechanical: axes without units, a gradient quoted without the triangle shown, a conclusion that restates the trend instead of evaluating the method, a variable named as controlled without saying how it was controlled. Those are checklist items, and a student who runs the checklist stops losing those marks permanently.

The laboratory work remains the school's responsibility and should. If your child's centre runs a separate practical examination, ask the science department which apparatus the paper assumes familiarity with and treat that as school business. Tutoring covers the written assessment of practical skill, which is where the marks are, and it should say so rather than implying facilities it does not have.

04

Where the marks go, science by science

Students name topics when asked what is hard. Marked papers show something different: the losses cluster around command terms, unwritten reasoning and mechanical graph and calculation errors, and they are remarkably consistent across the three sciences.

The single most expensive misunderstanding is treating describe and explain as the same instruction. Describe asks what happens; explain asks why, with a mechanism. A student who describes when asked to explain can write a paragraph of true statements and score nothing. The same applies to suggest, which invites a reasoned proposal rather than a recalled fact, and to evaluate, which requires a judgement with both sides present.

After command terms, the pattern splits by discipline. Biology loses marks to over-writing and to unpractised data questions. Chemistry loses them to multi-step mole calculations and to the qualitative analysis tables that students decline to memorise. Physics loses them to unit handling, equation rearrangement under time pressure and gradients quoted without units. The table sets this out with the fix and the realistic time it takes.

None of these repairs requires new content, which is why a term of science tutoring can change a grade without covering fresh material. It is also why the first session should be marking rather than teaching: until you know which of these is costing the marks, any teaching is a guess, and in Year 11 a guess costs a month.

One further pattern is worth naming, because it is invisible on a report card. Students who are short of time in a science paper almost always run out in the same place: the long experimental or data question near the end, which carries more marks than anything before it. They arrive with eight minutes and write three lines. Practising that question type first rather than last in a revision session, when attention is freshest, is a free change that recovers marks nobody realised were being lost to the clock rather than to knowledge.

05

Triage: which science to fix first when three are wobbling

  • One science at a time, for six to eight weeks, then reassess from marked work
  • Triage on marks lost for structural reasons, not on which science feels worst
  • The experimental-skills block improves all three papers at once
  • If nothing moves in six weeks, the problem is not which science you chose

A student on three separate sciences with one weekly tutoring hour has a decision to make, and most families make it badly by splitting the hour. Twenty minutes a week in each science produces no momentum in any of them, and the student arrives at each session having forgotten the last one. One science, done properly, for six to eight weeks, then reassess.

The triage question is not which science feels worst. It is which one is losing the most marks for the least structural reason. A student scoring moderately in all three but making mechanical graph and calculation errors in physics should start with physics, because the errors are cheap to fix and the gain is immediate. A student genuinely behind on chemistry content needs a longer block, so starting there means the other two go unsupported for a term.

There is also an order that respects the shared skills. The experimental-skills block, covering method, variables, tabulation, graphing and evaluation, applies to all three sciences at once. Four to six sessions on it improves every science paper the student sits, which makes it the best first purchase for a student on a double or combined award, and often for one on three separate sciences too.

Reassess from marked work rather than from feeling, after about six weeks. If the targeted science has moved and another has not, swap. If nothing has moved, the issue is the match, the diagnosis or the week rather than the subject, and buying a second hour will not help. Families who rotate deliberately get more from one hour than families who split it.

06

What IGCSE science support costs around Al Sufouh

Published rates in Dubai sort into clear tiers. Budget online tutoring runs from AED 45 to AED 150 an hour, with EdFlik publishing from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to AED 52. Qualified subject tutors working online are published from AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. Specialists in IB, IGCSE and A Level run AED 200 to AED 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270. Premium named tutoring reaches AED 500 to AED 650 and beyond, with BartyED at AED 650.

For IGCSE science, the qualified band is where almost all of the value sits. The work that moves grades is command-term discipline, experimental-skills technique, calculation drills and past-paper marking against the official scheme, and none of that requires a premium specialist. The case for the specialist band is narrower: a student on separate sciences aiming at a hard sixth-form threshold, or a chemistry candidate with a genuine content deficit rather than a technique one.

In-home visits are published between AED 180 and AED 500 an hour with travel included, and Bestimate's in-home band is AED 180 to AED 350. Monthly packages include AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. For weekly paper practice, eight contacts beat four, and the in-home package costs roughly double. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a weekly hour run AED 240 to AED 600 budget, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

Those are other providers' published figures rather than IB Gram prices. The questions worth insisting on before paying anything are short: the rate, whether it is per hour or per lesson, whether travel is inside the number, the cancellation terms and the remedy if the match is wrong. Three of the six strongest-ranking Dubai tutoring pages publish no rate at all, which is why a sourced table belongs on a page like this.

Entries, series and the resit route

  • The school submits entries and confirms the award months before the papers
  • Cambridge: June and November for UAE candidates; February and March is India-only
  • Pearson: May/June and November, with November results arriving in the new year
  • A private candidate resitting a science needs a centre offering the right practical arrangement

Two dates govern a science plan: the papers and the entry. The entry is submitted by the school months in advance, usually without much announcement, which is why a question about the award raised in March is generally too late to act on.

Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. The February and March series is offered to India only and is not a route for a Dubai candidate. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and states in its exams officers' guide that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, adding that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November. Its November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026. June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so plan only from the live official timetable.

For a science candidate, the resit calculation has an extra wrinkle. Where the practical arrangement differs by centre, a private candidate retaking may need a centre that offers the same arrangement, and that is worth checking in August rather than October. November is the recovery series for both boards, with results arriving in the new year. Plan it before you know whether you need it, because the specialists are booked by autumn.

From IGCSE science to A Level or IB: the bridging nobody buys

  • A Level and IB sciences assume more quantitative fluency than IGCSE examines
  • IB sciences add formal uncertainty treatment, which IGCSE does not teach
  • Four to six sessions in the Year 11 summer term covers most of the gap
  • Combined-award students should confirm sixth-form entry in June, not September

A good IGCSE science grade and readiness for a science at 16 are related but not the same thing. Both A Level and IB sciences assume more quantitative fluency than IGCSE examines, more comfort with rearranging multi-term expressions, and in the IB a formal approach to uncertainty that IGCSE does not teach at all.

That produces a predictable autumn. A student who scored well in IGCSE Physics meets uncertainty propagation in DP1 or A Level and finds it unfamiliar, concludes the subject has become harder than expected, and spends a term catching up on something that could have been learned in four sessions during a quiet summer. The same applies to the mathematics underneath chemistry, which arrives faster and in more steps than IGCSE prepared for.

The cheap intervention is the final term of Year 11 after the papers are done, or the summer that follows. Nothing else is competing for the time, the specialists are free because nobody is asking, and four to six sessions covers uncertainty treatment, algebraic speed and the habit of explaining with a mechanism. Almost nobody buys it, because the examinations are over and the new course has not started.

This is also the moment where a combined-award student finds out whether a science at 16 is actually available to them. If it is not, knowing in June is far better than discovering it in September, and the conversation to have is with the sixth form rather than with a tutor. If it is available with bridging, that bridging has a window, and the window is now.

Where we tutor

Where these students live

Science requests reach us from the communities around Media City. The variables that matter are the school mix, the journey home and whether one child is on three sciences or a combined award.

Dubai Media City and Al Sufouh

Residential towers in a working district, nearest gates at Dubai College and GEMS Wellington International School. Requests split between separate sciences and double award, and evening slots dominate because the afternoon journey takes the early hours out of play.

Dubai Internet City

Sharing the Red Line Metro station, limited residential stock, the same school destinations. The recurring question here is whether a student on a double award can still move onto a science at 16, which is a sixth-form entry question rather than a grade question.

Dubai Knowledge Park

University and training campuses along the tram line, with residential towers and an older student profile. Science requests from here are often resit or private-candidate cases, which need a shorter and more surgical block than a first attempt.

Barsha Heights

Inland of the Metro line with the shortest run to the Al Barsha cluster, so children are home earlier and a 5pm slot is genuinely workable. A good share of requests are Year 10 students on three sciences deciding which one to support.

The Greens and The Views

Built around Regent International School, with some children walking or making a very short journey. The earliest weekday slots in this corridor are realistic here, which makes two sessions a week easier to sustain in Year 11.

Dubai Marina and JBR

The largest resident population in range and the slowest evening roads. Later slots and recorded lessons matter here, because science sessions are the ones students most often want to replay before a test.

Jumeirah Lakes Towers

Its own Metro station and a wide spread of school destinations, including Jebel Ali. Steady demand for chemistry specifically, which in this corridor is the science families most often identify as the problem.

Al Barsha, Al Barsha South and the villa belt

The destination for most buses out of the Media City towers and the deepest school cluster nearby. Both Cambridge and Pearson candidates come from here, sometimes within the same family on different awards.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Dubai Media City

Al Barsha and Al Barsha South

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Identify the award and the codes

Count the science grades on the last report, then confirm with the examinations officer which award, which board and which syllabus codes. Separate sciences, a double award and combined science are different qualifications pitched at different depths, and matching without that is guesswork.

  2. 02

    Send one marked science paper

A returned paper shows the diagnosis immediately: describe answers given where explain was asked, data questions avoided, graphs without units, multi-step calculations abandoned. That takes minutes from real evidence and is a guess without it, and in Year 11 a guess costs a month.

  3. 03

    Triage to one science

One science at a time, chosen by marks lost for structural reasons rather than by which feels worst, for six to eight weeks and then reassessed. Where the student is on a double or combined award, the experimental-skills block usually comes first, because it improves all three disciplines at once.

  4. 04

Free trial lesson on a real question

One lesson at no cost, worked on a question from the actual award and board your child sits, followed by a written note naming the largest single loss and what the first four sessions would target. Nothing is paid until you have read it and agreed.

  5. 05

Weekly paper, live marking, error log

A timed paper or section each week, marked line by line with the student against the official scheme, and a running error log that becomes the revision document for the series. Progress is measured by whether logged errors stop recurring, which you can check yourself.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the award, not the word science

Separate sciences at 0610, 0620 and 0625, Co-ordinated Sciences at 0654 and Combined Science at 0653 are pitched at different depths, and Pearson's equivalents differ again. A tutor teaching the wrong depth wastes the hour on material the paper will not reward.

Experimental skills taught as paper skills

Method, variables, instrument resolution, tabulation, graphing and evaluation are assessed in writing in both boards' International GCSE sciences. Four to six sessions on them improves every science paper the student sits, which makes it the best-value block on a double or combined award.

Triage instead of splitting the hour

A student on three sciences with one weekly hour should spend it on one science for six to eight weeks, not twenty minutes on each. Momentum is what produces change in a procedural subject, and a split hour produces none in any discipline.

The right tier, which is usually not the top one

Nearly all IGCSE science work sits comfortably in the published AED 150 to AED 300 band, because the gains come from command terms, technique and marked papers. The specialist band at AED 200 to AED 450 is for separate sciences at a hard threshold or a real content deficit.

No travel premium and no laboratory pretence

Published in-home rates run AED 180 to AED 500 an hour against AED 150 to AED 300 online, and the premium is the drive. Laboratory work stays with the school. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; home visits are a service we run only in India.

Honest about what comes next

A combined award often does not support a science at 16, and both A Level and IB sciences assume more quantitative fluency than IGCSE examines. Saying that in Year 10, when the award can still change, is more useful than selling a Year 11 rescue.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Dubai Media City: your questions answered

How do I tell whether my child is doing triple, double or combined science?+

Count the science grades on the most recent report. Three grades means separate sciences, two means a double award such as Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654, and one means a combined single award such as 0653. Then email the examinations officer to confirm the board and the syllabus codes, since a report card often just says Science. The answer matters because the awards are pitched at different depths, and a tutor teaching the wrong depth spends the hour on material the paper will not reward.

Is double award science easier than three separate sciences?+

Lighter in total content, denser per mark, and frequently misjudged. Students expect relief and find that the breadth is retained while the teaching time is not, which means the basics in all three disciplines have to be reliable rather than one favourite discipline being strong. The commonest and most expensive pattern in double-award cohorts is a student revising their best science hardest. Breadth with dependable fundamentals is what the paper rewards.

Can my child take A Level or IB science after a combined award?+

Sometimes, and it needs confirming with the sixth form rather than assuming. Separate sciences are the usual expectation, a double award is often acceptable with a good grade, and a single combined award frequently is not sufficient without bridging. The expensive version of this question is asked in Year 12; the cheap version is asked in Year 10, when the award can still be changed, or in June of Year 11, when a bridging block still fits.

How can an online tutor prepare my child for science practicals?+

By preparing them for how practical skill is assessed, which is in writing. Pearson assesses practical skills through the written papers, and Cambridge centres run either a practical or an alternative-to-practical arrangement; in both cases the written demand is the same shape. Describing a method precisely, identifying variables, reading instruments to resolution, tabulating with units, plotting, calculating gradients and evaluating limitations are all screen-shareable and all improve fastest with live marking against the official scheme.

Why does a page of true statements score nothing on an explain question?+

Describe asks what happens; explain asks why, with a mechanism. A student who describes when asked to explain can write a paragraph of entirely true statements and score nothing, which is the single most expensive misunderstanding in IGCSE science. Suggest invites a reasoned proposal rather than a recalled fact, and evaluate requires a judgement with both sides present. One session on command terms, then enforced in every written answer, often recovers more than a month of content revision.

My child is wobbling in all three sciences. Where should one weekly hour go?+

Into one science for six to eight weeks, not twenty minutes into each. A split hour produces no momentum anywhere and the student arrives at each session having forgotten the last. Choose by marks lost for structural reasons rather than by which science feels worst: mechanical graph and calculation errors are cheap to fix and give an immediate gain, while a genuine content deficit needs a longer block. Then reassess from marked work and swap if needed.

Which block of work improves all three sciences at once?+

The experimental-skills block: method description precise enough to repeat, independent, dependent and control variables identified, instruments read to their resolution, tables with units in the headers, graphs with the full checklist, and evaluation tied to the actual method used. Four to six sessions covers it, and because those questions appear in every science paper on every award, the gain shows up three times over. It is the best first purchase on a double or combined award.

Why does my child lose marks on graphs when the plotting is correct?+

Because the marks sit around the plotting. Axes need units, scales need to be sensible, a line of best fit needs to be a line rather than a join-the-dots, a gradient needs the triangle shown and units stated, and a conclusion needs to evaluate rather than restate the trend. Each is a separate mark and each is mechanical. A student who runs the same checklist on every graph question stops losing those marks permanently, usually within three or four marked papers.

Does qualitative analysis in chemistry really need to be memorised?+

Yes, and students resist it because it feels unsophisticated. Flame colours, precipitate colours, gas tests and the reagents that produce them are pure recall, they are examined, and they are among the most reliable marks on the paper. A fortnight of five minutes a day usually handles the whole set. It is worth insisting on, because a student who refuses to learn it is choosing to lose marks that require no understanding at all.

How much should IGCSE science tutoring cost in Dubai?+

Nearly all of it belongs in the published qualified band of AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, because the gains come from command terms, experimental-skills technique, calculation drills and marked past papers rather than from rare expertise. Specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above are worth it for separate sciences at a hard sixth-form threshold or a real content deficit. The premium band at AED 500 to AED 650 is rarely the right call for IGCSE science.

Is an in-home science tutor better because of the practical side?+

Not in a way that affects marks. Practical skill is assessed in writing in both boards' International GCSE sciences, and a tutor at your table is no more able to run a titration than one on a screen, because neither has a laboratory. Published in-home rates run AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel included against AED 150 to AED 300 online, so the premium is the drive. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai; that service exists only in India.

When do science entries get submitted, and can the award still change?+

Entries go in months before the papers, submitted by the school, usually without an announcement. A change of award is a Year 10 conversation rather than a Year 11 one, and it needs evidence: marked work across all three disciplines showing whether the separate-science depth is sustainable. If a science at 16 is a possibility, raise the award question early, because by the spring of Year 11 the decision has been made for you.

What should a private candidate retaking a science check before entering?+

Which practical arrangement the centre offers, because that varies and can differ from the arrangement the student prepared for. Beyond that, the entry administration sits with the school or the examination centre rather than with a tutoring provider, and private candidates need a centre willing to enter them. November is the recovery series for both boards, with results arriving in the new year, so settle the centre and the arrangement in August rather than October.

Is there any point in science tutoring after the Year 11 papers are finished?+

It is the cheapest and least popular block available. Both A Level and IB sciences assume more quantitative fluency than IGCSE examines, and the IB adds formal uncertainty treatment that IGCSE does not teach at all. Four to six sessions in the final term or the summer covers uncertainty, algebraic speed and explaining with a mechanism, at a point when nothing competes for the time and specialists are free because nobody is asking.

What should I expect to see after four science sessions?+

A timed paper marked against the official scheme, comparable with the first session's diagnosis. Specifically: explain answers that give a mechanism, graphs with units and a gradient triangle, multi-step calculations attempted rather than abandoned, and experimental questions answered with variables named. If none of that has changed, the honest reading is that the match or the diagnosis was wrong rather than that more hours are needed, and a re-match follows.

Find the award, then buy the right block

If you are looking for an IGCSE science tutor in Dubai Media City, start by counting the science grades and confirming the award and codes with the school. Separate sciences, a double award and combined science are pitched at different depths, and the match has to respect that. Then send one marked paper, because the diagnosis is visible in it: describe given where explain was asked, data questions avoided, graphs without units, calculations abandoned. A free trial lesson on a real question from your child's own paper produces a written note before anything is paid, and lessons run one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
