IGCSE Home Tutor in Al Muteena

Most searches for an IGCSE home tutor in Al Muteena start with a report card and end with a syllabus code. A grade 5 in Maths means one thing on Cambridge 0580 Extended and something else on Pearson 4MA1 Higher, and the past papers a student should be working are different in each case. This page is written from the specification outwards: what each paper asks, where the mark scheme refuses to give credit, and what a week of past-paper work looks like for a student in Al Muteena. Lessons run live online on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Al Muteena

Start with the specification, not with the subject

An IGCSE report card gives you a grade and almost no information about what to do next. The useful starting point is the statement of entry, which lists the syllabus code for every subject the student has been entered for. Those four characters determine the paper structure, the grading scale, whether the subject is tiered, what content is examinable and which past papers are worth the student's time. Everything a tutor does downstream depends on them, and almost nobody asks for them first.

Take Mathematics. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is tiered: Core candidates sit Papers 1 and 3 with a grade ceiling of C, Extended candidates sit Papers 2 and 4 and can reach A*. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics 4MA1 is tiered differently into Foundation and Higher, graded 9 to 1, with two papers rather than two plus two. A student revising Higher 4MA1 material for an Extended 0580 paper is working largely useful content in slightly the wrong format, and the formula sheet conventions differ.

English does the same thing less visibly. Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500 is assessed on reading and writing papers with a strict mark allocation for each; English as a Second Language 0510 and 0511 are different qualifications with different expectations. A student placed in the wrong one has a ceiling problem rather than a skill problem, and families in the older Dubai districts, where many students are strong but not first-language English speakers, meet this more often than the city average.

The sciences add tiering and a practical paper. Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620, Physics 0625 and Biology 0610 each run a tiered theory pair plus Paper 6, the Alternative to Practical, which most UAE school centres enter candidates for. Coordinated Sciences 0654 compresses all three into two grades and excludes content the single sciences require, so revising from a single-science textbook wastes hours.

That is the whole argument of this page. A tutoring plan built from a syllabus code tells a student which topics are off their paper, which marks are method marks, and which past papers to sit under a clock. A tutoring plan built from a subject name produces a student who understands more and scores the same, which is the outcome families in Al Muteena describe most often when a previous arrangement did not work.

One caveat before the detail. Codes change between series as boards revise specifications, and a revision guide bought two years ago for an older sibling may describe a syllabus that has since been updated. The authoritative version is the specification document on the board's own website for the series your child is entered for, which is free to read and takes a few minutes to check against the contents page of whatever book is on the desk. Where this page names a code, treat it as the starting point for that check rather than the end of it, and ask the school to confirm the entry in writing.

At a glance

  • Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is tiered Core and Extended; Pearson 4MA1 is Foundation and Higher
  • Cambridge grades most subjects A* to G; Pearson International GCSE grades 9 to 1
  • First Language English 0500 and Second Language English 0510 are separate qualifications
  • Paper 6 is a written paper about practical work, sat by most UAE school centres
  • Coordinated Sciences 0654 excludes content the single sciences examine
  • UAE candidates sit the June and November Cambridge series; the February/March series is offered to India only

Cambridge IGCSE

Subject-by-subject qualifications identified by four-digit codes, several of them tiered. Most students in Dubai British-curriculum schools take eight to ten. Papers are externally marked in the UK, mark schemes are published after each series, and grade boundaries move slightly between series, which is why a raw mark is more informative than a percentage.

KHDA inspects the Dubai school; Cambridge awards the qualification. For an Al Muteena parent that split matters when a school's inspection band and a child's predicted grades disagree. The inspection judges the building; the mark scheme judges the script, and only one of those appears on a university application.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE

The other major board in Dubai, graded 9 to 1, with a modular option in some subjects and a different paper structure from Cambridge in almost all of them. Mathematics 4MA1 tiers into Foundation and Higher; the sciences are untiered. Question stems run longer and lean harder on data interpretation.

Pearson publishes its International GCSE timetables openly and runs May/June and November series. Its November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, with November results historically reaching students in January; November 2025 results landed on 22 January 2026. Always open the live official timetable, because provisional versions are revised.

IB Diploma Programme

One of the two main post-16 routes for a strong IGCSE cohort. Six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. HL sciences and Mathematics Analysis and Approaches assume the Extended or Higher tier content as prior knowledge rather than teaching it again.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds seven new private schools, three of them International Baccalaureate, creating around sixteen thousand eight hundred places. That widens DP access for students currently in Year 10 in the northern districts, where IB provision has historically been thinner than in the newer communities.

AS/A2Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

International A Level

The other post-16 route, usually three or four subjects, modular at AS and A2 and examined in the same June and November windows. Subject prerequisites are specific: A Level Mathematics assumes the Extended or Higher tier, and A Level sciences assume the Extended content that a Core entry omits.

For UAE Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, a student must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level, alongside five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at grade E or 3 or better, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that five.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject below is described by the paper it is actually marked on and the specific place the mark scheme stops giving credit, which is the information a revision plan needs.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Core and Extended

Extended Paper 4 is where grades are made. Method marks survive arithmetic slips, so a student who writes nothing but a final answer loses everything on a transcription error. Algebraic fractions, bounds, and the vectors and transformations cluster are the predictable weak points.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics 4MA1

Foundation and Higher

Two papers rather than four, graded 9 to 1, with a formula sheet convention that differs from Cambridge. Higher tier questions run longer stems with more multi-step problem solving, and the commonest loss is abandoning a question rather than writing down the partial working that earns method marks.

Cambridge IGCSE First Language English 0500

Untiered

Reading questions reward precise selection and own-words explanation; writing is marked on content and structure separately from style and accuracy. Students lose reading marks by quoting at length instead of explaining, and writing marks by producing one undifferentiated register across every task.

Cambridge IGCSE English as a Second Language 0510

Untiered

A different qualification with a different ceiling from 0500, often the right placement for a strong student who is not a first-language speaker. Marks concentrate in summary writing and in the extended response, where the task's audience and purpose must be visibly addressed.

Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry 0620

Core and Extended

Mole calculations and balanced ionic equations carry the Extended grade. An unbalanced equation feeding a calculation destroys every mark downstream, which makes equation discipline the highest-yield fix available in the subject.

Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625

Core and Extended

Unit conversion in pressure and moments, ray diagrams drawn without a normal, and series-versus-parallel misreading account for most avoidable losses. Writing the relationship before substituting converts arithmetic slips into partial credit.

Cambridge IGCSE Biology 0610

Core and Extended

Looks like the memorisable science and is marked on command terms. Describe, explain and suggest carry different expectations, and the enzyme, transport and excretion cluster produces the most mismatches between what a student wrote and what the scheme credits.

Cambridge IGCSE Business Studies 0450 and Economics 0455

Untiered

Case-study papers where application to the given business or economy earns the marks and generic theory does not. Students who learn definitions thoroughly and never practise applying them to an unfamiliar scenario plateau in the middle grades.

Cambridge IGCSE Additional Mathematics and further routes

Post-Extended option

Taken alongside 0580 Extended in some Dubai schools as a bridge to A Level. Useful for a DP Analysis and Approaches or A Level Mathematics candidate, and a poor use of hours for a student still insecure on Extended content.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats cover almost every IGCSE request from this district. All are delivered live over video; none involves a tutor travelling to a UAE address.

One subject, one paper, every week

A sixty-minute session on a single named paper, chosen from the most recent timed-paper marks. The student works a question live on a shared screen while the tutor marks against the published scheme and says exactly where credit stopped. Narrow by design, because broad revision is what the school already provides.

  • Paper named in advance from mock evidence
  • Live marking against the published scheme
  • One technique target carried into the week
  • Short timed task set between sessions

Multi-subject exam-term block

Two or three sessions a week across different subjects in the final stretch before a series, with the rotation weighted by distance from target rather than by preference. Suits a Year 11 student with three subjects sitting near a boundary and limited hours to spend.

  • Rotation set by timed-paper marks
  • Full papers under exam conditions weekly
  • Shared notes across tutors for the same student
  • Plan reviewed every four weeks

Year 10 foundation block

Earlier, slower work for a student with real content gaps from Year 9 or a mid-course school transfer. The aim is to be ready for Extended or Higher tier when entries are made, rather than to rescue a grade after they have been. This is the cheapest version of this problem to solve.

  • Content retaught sequentially from the gap, not the syllabus start
  • Tier readiness assessed on timed Extended papers
  • Evidence assembled for the school's entry decision
  • Runs over terms rather than weeks

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Muteena

01

What a syllabus code tells you that a report card cannot

A Dubai school report gives a grade, a predicted grade and a comment. None of those tell a parent what their child should do on Saturday morning. The statement of entry does, because it names the syllabus and therefore the paper structure. With 0580 Extended on the sheet, the student has Papers 2 and 4 to prepare, the grade ceiling is A*, and Paper 4 is the longer structured paper where method marks dominate. With 0580 Core, the papers are 1 and 3 and the ceiling is C, which changes what the next two years are for.

The same logic runs through every subject. A Chemistry 0620 Extended candidate must know mole calculations and ionic equations to a standard the Core subset never requires. A Coordinated Sciences 0654 candidate can safely ignore several single-science topics and should not be revising from a single-science revision guide. A First Language English 0500 candidate is marked on precise own-words explanation; an English as a Second Language 0510 candidate is marked on summary and task-appropriate register.

Finding the codes takes minutes. They appear on the statement of entry the exams officer issues, usually a term before the series, and schools will supply them earlier on request. Writing them down and giving them to a tutor at the first contact is the single highest-value piece of administration available to an Al Muteena parent, and it costs nothing.

The failure this prevents is specific and common. A student changes school mid-course, or a tutor assumes the board the previous student used, and a term of revision goes into material that is adjacent to the paper rather than on it. The student works hard, understands more, and scores the same, because the questions in the hall were never the questions being practised.

Mark-scheme traps: where credit stops even when the answer is right

Published mark schemes are specific, and the specificity is where students lose marks they have earned in their heads. In Mathematics the dominant trap is the unwritten method. Marks are allocated for the correct approach and the correct substitution as well as for the final answer, so a student who does the work mentally and writes one number down loses two marks for a slip that cost them nothing in understanding. Training the habit of writing the relationship, substituting, then stating the answer with units converts several zeros a paper into partial credit.

In English the trap is quotation without explanation. A reading question asking for an explanation in the student's own words gives no credit for a copied phrase, however apt. Students who have been praised for close reference to the text sometimes read that as permission to quote at length, and the scheme simply does not pay for it. The reverse trap in writing papers is register: one essay voice applied to a letter, a report and a narrative, where the task-specific audience carries marks.

In the sciences the trap is the command term. State wants a fact and credits nothing extra. Explain wants a causal chain and gives nothing for a description. Suggest expects applied reasoning in an unfamiliar context and accepts several answers, so a student who writes nothing because they have not memorised this exact case has given up marks that were available. Command-term sorting is a dull exercise that pays immediately.

In case-study subjects like Business Studies 0450 the trap is generic theory. The scheme credits application to the business in the stem, so an answer that correctly defines economies of scale without mentioning the firm in the case earns a fraction of the available marks. All four of these traps are diagnosable from a single marked past paper, which is why the first session works on a paper rather than on a conversation.

03

A week of past-paper work that actually produces marks

  • One full timed paper per subject per week, no notes
  • Mark against the published scheme the same day
  • Categorise each lost mark: content, method, misread or time
  • Session time goes to the largest category, not the first question
  • Midweek task of ten to fifteen minutes on that one weakness

Past papers are the most abundant free resource in IGCSE and the most badly used. The standard pattern is to work through a paper with the answers nearby, feel reasonably good about it, and learn almost nothing, because no part of that process replicates what happens in the hall. A paper is only diagnostic if it is sat under a clock without help and then marked against the published scheme by somebody honest.

A workable weekly routine for a Year 11 student in Al Muteena looks like this. One full paper under timed conditions at the weekend, phone elsewhere, no notes. Self-marking against the scheme immediately, with every lost mark categorised as content, method, misread or time. Then the tutoring session spends its hour on the largest category rather than on the first question. Then a short targeted task for midweek on exactly that weakness, ten or fifteen minutes rather than an hour.

Categorising losses is the part families skip and it is the part that makes the routine work. A paper with twelve lost marks might break down as two content, seven method and three time, in which case more revision is the wrong response entirely and the student needs to write working and manage the clock. The same twelve marks all in content means the opposite. Two weeks of categorised papers tell you more about a student than a term of reports.

There is a volume question too. Sitting four papers a week produces fatigue and sloppy marking, and the marks stop improving. One properly sat, properly marked paper per subject per week, with midweek targeted work, is enough for most students and sustainable through a whole term, which matters more than intensity in the eight weeks before a series.

Home tutoring in Al Muteena: what it costs, what it buys, and what IB Gram sells instead

In-home tutoring is a genuine Dubai market and the published rates are higher than online for comparable qualifications. Bestimate's rate work puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 an hour and independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500, with travel included in the figure. Comparable qualified subject tutors working online are published at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150. Monthly in-home packages circulating in the market run around AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions, against roughly AED 799 for eight online sessions.

What the premium buys is physical presence and the attention that comes with it, which genuinely helps some students, particularly younger ones or those who will not work unsupervised. What it also buys is a round trip through Dubai traffic at the hour the whole city is moving. In the older northern districts, where Salahuddin Road and the Ittihad corridor are at their worst between four and seven, that journey is long and the tutor is paid for it.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE. Home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and no tutor will arrive at an address in Al Muteena or anywhere else in the Emirates. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one and live over video on Gulf Standard Time. That is worth saying on the page rather than after a booking.

The argument for the online format on a syllabus-led page is narrow and strong. A family hiring in-home in Al Muteena is choosing from tutors willing to drive to Al Muteena on a Tuesday evening. A family hiring online is choosing from tutors who teach Cambridge 0580 Extended Paper 4 every week, wherever they live. For a student whose problem is unwritten method marks on Paper 4, the second pool is the one that contains the answer.

The tier decision, and the deadline nobody mentions

Tiering is the quietest high-stakes decision in IGCSE. In Cambridge Mathematics and the sciences a Core entry caps the grade at C; in Pearson Mathematics a Foundation entry caps it below the grades most A Level Mathematics courses require. The decision is usually made by the school on the strength of Year 10 performance, and it is frequently never discussed with the family at all.

There is a sound case for the lower tier. A student who would score across the bottom of an Extended paper can come away with a secure C from Core rather than an insecure E, and if science or mathematics is not a prerequisite for what comes next, that is a better outcome. The case against is that the ceiling closes IB Higher Level sciences, Mathematics Analysis and Approaches, and most A Level science and mathematics routes, and the student rarely understands that when the entry is made.

What makes this a tutoring matter is evidence. Schools move students between tiers on timed-paper performance, not on parental preference, and a head of department presented with six weeks of honestly marked Extended papers has something to act on. If the papers say the higher tier is viable, the conversation is short. If they say it is not, the family has chosen with their eyes open rather than hoped.

The timing is the part that catches people. Entries are submitted to the board months before the exam window, and the school's internal deadline for collating a whole cohort sits earlier still. A tier conversation opened in the spring term of Year 11 has usually missed the window for the next series. Opened in Year 10 or early Year 11, it is routine. Parents in Al Muteena with a child currently in Year 10 have the most room to act and the least urgency to do so, which is exactly why it gets left.

06

The June series counted backwards, and why entries close so early

Cambridge International runs IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series, and UAE centres sit those two. The February/March series is offered to India only, so a plan built around a spring sitting belongs to another country's calendar. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Both boards publish provisional timetables well in advance and revise them, which is why the only timetable worth trusting is the current official one.

Cambridge also divides centres into six administrative zones and publishes a separate timetable for each. Its own guidance to exams officers states that using the correct version for your zone is essential and that Cambridge cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong one. For a Dubai family this means the timetable the school issues is the authoritative one, not one found through a search engine.

Counting backwards from a June series produces the plan. The school's internal entry deadline comes first, weeks before the board's own final entry date. Mocks sit in the winter term. A specification coverage check about twelve weeks out turns every untaught topic into a named risk rather than a surprise. The final eight weeks are the timed-paper phase, which is where most measurable grade movement happens. Then the window, then results, then the resit decision.

Pearson's published dates show how long the tail runs. Its November 2026 International GCSE final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026; November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students the following day. For a student who misses a target grade in June, the November series is the resit route, and the entry for it closes long before the summer ends.

Academic honesty and board materials: the two boundaries that matter

IGCSE carries less assessed coursework than the IB Diploma, but the honesty boundary still applies and it becomes critical the moment a student moves into DP or A Level investigations. The working rule is that the student produces the work and the tutor teaches, questions and gives feedback on it. A tutor who hands back a rewritten version has replaced the student's thinking with their own and created a problem the student will carry.

That leaves plenty a tutor can legitimately do: explain why a method is uncontrolled, ask what the student thinks the next step is, mark a practice answer against the published scheme, and show a worked example of a comparable question. What a tutor should not do is write an answer for submission, edit assessed work to completion, or supply a model response to be handed in. Families are entitled to ask any provider directly where that line sits, and a vague answer is itself informative. Some operations serving this market advertise completed Internal Assessments for sale, which is a malpractice trigger carried by the student rather than the seller.

The second boundary is copyright. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge, Pearson and the IB. A tutor should link them at source rather than distributing copies, and a provider advertising a downloadable library of board materials is telling you about its standards in a way its marketing copy does not.

Neither boundary makes tutoring less useful. Past papers are freely available on the boards' own sites and through the school, and a session spent working one properly under a tutor's eye is worth more than a folder of material nobody opens.

08

Mandatory UAE subjects and the real hours available in an Al Muteena week

A revision plan written for a Dubai student has to account for subjects that do not exist on a UK timetable. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, with its requirements to be implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year. These occupy real hours in a Year 11 week.

KHDA also prescribes how they run. Schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arab students and for Arabic as a first language. Instructional time is calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit, with KHDA advising that any mandatory-subject lesson runs at least twenty-five minutes.

The practical effect on tutoring is arithmetic. A Year 11 student in Al Muteena carrying eight or nine IGCSE subjects plus mandatory UAE subjects has fewer free evenings than a plan copied from a UK revision schedule assumes. Three fixed sessions a week looks decisive on paper and collapses by week four. One well-used weekly session per priority subject, plus the timed-paper routine, survives the term.

Ramadan compresses the school day and moves the household routine, and in this district that usually means sessions shift to after Iftar or to the weekend for the month. Online delivery makes that a calendar change rather than a renegotiation. Students sitting a June series should plan the Ramadan weeks deliberately, because it falls inside the window where the timed-paper phase does its work.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Muteena

Al Muteena sits in the older grid west of Hor Al Anz, and the districts below share its schools, its traffic and its exam timetable. The notes say what differs for a student sitting papers.

Al Muteena

Apartment living close to Salahuddin Road, with a mixed Arab and South Asian expatriate population. Study space is often shared, which is why a fixed quiet hour matters more here than the exact time of day.

Hor Al Anz and Hor Al Anz East

Immediately east, feeding largely the same schools. Students here sit the same series in the same halls, so mock timetables and internal deadlines tend to align closely with Al Muteena's.

Deira

The oldest and densest school stock in the city, heavily weighted to Cambridge and Indian curricula. Short journeys mean an earlier realistic session start than most of Dubai manages.

Al Qusais

A large cluster of Indian and British-curriculum secondaries together. Families frequently have one child on CBSE and one on IGCSE, and the two revision cultures are genuinely different.

Al Garhoud

Where several of the larger international schools sit. Students bussed from Al Muteena get back late enough that evening slots after six are the norm during exam term.

Al Nahda and Al Mamzar

Near the Sharjah boundary, with some students in Sharjah-side schools regulated by SPEA rather than KHDA. The qualification is identical; the school calendar is not always.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the syllabus codes and one marked paper

The first message should name the school, the year group and the codes from the statement of entry, and attach a photograph of the most recent marked paper. That is enough to identify whether the problem is content, method, misreading or time, which decides everything else.

  2. 02

Free trial on a real past-paper question

The trial is a working session, not a sales call. The tutor marks the student's answer live against the published scheme, names the largest category of lost marks, and says roughly how many weeks that category takes to shift. No payment is taken before it.

  3. 03

Fix the weekly paper routine first

Before adding sessions, set the routine: one full timed paper per subject per week, self-marked the same day, with every lost mark categorised. Most families find this alone changes the next mock, and it makes the paid hour far more useful.

  4. 04

Weight the sessions by distance from target

Subjects are ranked by how far the timed-paper mark sits from the target grade, and hours go to the top of that list rather than spread evenly. Covering everything equally is the commonest way a term of tutoring produces no measurable change.

  5. 05

Recheck against the series, not the month

Every four weeks the plan is measured against how far the series is and what the papers show. Untaught topics become named risks. If a tier conversation with the school is needed, the paper evidence is already there to support it.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The syllabus code comes first

A tutor who knows the entry is 0580 Extended rather than mathematics in general can tell a student what is off their paper. That is the difference between saving a student hours and spending them, and it is the first thing we ask for.

Practice answers are marked live against the real scheme so the student sees where credit stopped. Feeling clearer and scoring higher are different outcomes, and only the second one shows up in a series.

Lost marks categorised, not counted

Twelve lost marks mean different things depending on whether they are content, method, misread or time. Categorising them decides whether the right response is revision, writing discipline or clock management.

Tier reality stated early

If a Core or Foundation entry caps a student below what their post-16 plan needs, we say so and produce timed-paper evidence for the school conversation. Tutoring cannot lift a capped entry, and discovering that late costs a year.

Online, and said so up front

All UAE lessons run live over video on Gulf Standard Time. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. The published in-home premium mostly buys a journey rather than better teaching.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Muteena: your questions answered

Where do I find my child's IGCSE syllabus codes?+

On the statement of entry the school's exams officer issues, usually a term before the series, and schools will provide the codes earlier if asked. Each subject carries a four-character code, and that code decides the paper structure, the tier, the grading scale and which past papers are worth sitting. Cambridge Mathematics 0580, Chemistry 0620 and First Language English 0500 are examples; Pearson uses forms like 4MA1. Writing the codes down and handing them to a tutor at first contact is the highest-value five minutes of administration available to a parent.

Is Cambridge 0580 the same as Pearson 4MA1 for maths?+

They cover similar mathematics and are structured differently. Cambridge 0580 tiers into Core and Extended and sits four papers across the two tiers, grading A* to G. Pearson 4MA1 tiers into Foundation and Higher, sits two papers and grades 9 to 1. The supplied formula conventions differ, and Pearson questions tend to run longer multi-step stems. A student revising one board's materials for the other board's paper will be working largely relevant content in the wrong format, which usually surfaces at a mock.

My son gets the right answer in maths and still drops marks. What is happening?+

Usually because the method is not written down. Mark schemes allocate credit for the correct relationship and the correct substitution separately from the final answer, so a student who calculates mentally and writes one number loses the method marks whenever there is an arithmetic slip. The habit worth training is mechanical: write the relationship, substitute the values, state the answer with its unit. On a Cambridge 0580 Extended Paper 4 that converts several zeros into partial credit, and it is the fastest improvement available in the subject.

Should my child be on First Language English 0500 or Second Language 0510?+

They are different qualifications with different ceilings and different mark expectations, and the placement is a school decision worth questioning rather than accepting. 0500 marks precise own-words explanation in reading and task-appropriate register in writing. 0510 concentrates marks in summary writing and extended response, with audience and purpose carrying weight. For a strong student who is not a first-language speaker, 0510 is often the better placement; for a student capable of 0500 who was placed in 0510 on arrival, the ceiling is doing the damage rather than the teaching.

How should a Year 11 student in Al Muteena use past papers?+

One full paper per subject per week, under a clock, with no notes and the phone elsewhere. Mark it against the published scheme the same day, then categorise every lost mark as content, method, misread or time. The paid session then spends its hour on the largest category rather than starting at question one. A short midweek task of ten or fifteen minutes targets that same weakness. Four papers a week produces fatigue and sloppy marking; one properly sat and properly marked beats three skimmed with the answers open.

What does in-home tutoring cost in this part of Dubai?+

Published figures put in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to 350 an hour from Bestimate's rate work and AED 200 to 500 for independent home tutors, with travel included. Monthly in-home packages seen in the market run around AED 1,599 to 1,799 for four two-hour sessions. Comparable qualified tutors working online are published at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and monthly online packages around AED 799 for eight sessions. The gap largely reflects the round trip rather than the teaching.

Will IB Gram send a tutor to our apartment in Al Muteena?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; home tutoring is a service we run only in India. All UAE lessons are one-to-one and live over video on Gulf Standard Time, with the past paper and mark scheme shared on screen. For syllabus-led work that format is an advantage rather than a compromise: the tutor you can reach online is the one who teaches your child's exact paper every week, instead of whoever is willing to drive into this district at five in the afternoon.

Can a Core tier entry still get my child into A Level sciences?+

Usually not, and this is the part that catches families late. A Cambridge Core entry caps the grade at C and omits content the Extended syllabus examines, so a student arrives at A Level or IB Higher Level having never been taught several assumed topics. Most A Level science and mathematics courses, and IB Higher Level sciences, expect the Extended or Higher tier. If the post-16 plan needs those, the tier conversation has to happen in Year 10 or early Year 11, because entries close months before the exam window.

How do I get the school to move my child to Extended tier?+

With timed-paper evidence rather than a request. Schools make tier decisions on performance, and a head of department shown six weeks of honestly marked Extended past papers has something concrete to act on. Sit the papers under exam conditions, mark them against the published scheme without generosity, and bring the raw marks. If they support the move, the conversation is short. If they do not, the family has made an informed decision instead of a hopeful one, which is also a useful outcome.

When are IGCSE exams actually sat in the UAE?+

Cambridge runs IGCSE and O Level examinations in a June series and a November series, and UAE centres sit those two. The February/March series is offered to India only, so any schedule built around a spring sitting belongs to a different country. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. Cambridge also allocates centres to one of six administrative zones with a timetable per zone, and states that using the correct zone timetable is essential, so trust the timetable your school issues over anything found online.

What happens if my child misses a grade in the June series?+

The November series is the resit route for both boards, and the entry for it closes much earlier than families expect, often while results are still being digested. Pearson's published pattern shows how long the tail runs: its November 2026 International GCSE timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026 and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026. Decide quickly, confirm the entry with the exams officer, and check the live official timetable rather than a restated date.

Can a tutor help with IGCSE coursework or a science investigation?+

A tutor can teach the underlying content, question an experimental design, explain what the published criteria reward and mark practice work against them. A tutor cannot write the piece, edit it to completion or supply a model answer for submission; the work has to be the student's own. Ask any provider directly where it draws that line. Some operations serving this market advertise completed assessed work for sale, and the consequences of using one fall on the student rather than the seller.

How many subjects should we get tutoring for at once?+

Fewer than most families start with. Rank subjects by how far the latest timed-paper mark sits from the target grade and put the hours at the top of that list. Two subjects worked properly move more grades than five worked thinly, because thin coverage changes nothing measurable in any of them. If three subjects genuinely sit near a boundary, a short exam-term block across those three with full papers weekly is the shape that works, and it is also the point at which cost becomes the real constraint.

Does a Dubai school's KHDA rating tell me whether my child will get the grade?+

Not reliably. KHDA inspects Dubai private schools on a six-band scale from Outstanding to Very Weak, judging the whole school across many measures. It is a fair signal about the institution and a poor predictor for an individual subject set. The thing that predicts an IGCSE grade is a full past paper sat under exam conditions and marked against the published scheme. If you want to know where a student stands, that takes an afternoon and tells you more than any inspection report will.

Do mandatory UAE subjects reduce the time available for IGCSE revision?+

Yes, and plans copied from UK revision schedules routinely ignore it. KHDA requires Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies in all Dubai private schools whatever curriculum they are licensed for, with requirements implemented from the start of the 2025-26 academic year, and instructional time calculated on a forty-minute lesson unit. A Year 11 student here carries those on top of eight or nine IGCSE subjects. The realistic shape is one well-used weekly session per priority subject plus the timed-paper routine, not three fixed sessions that collapse by week four.

What if no tutor covers our exact board and time slot?+

We say so rather than filling the slot with whoever is available. An unusual combination, a specific Pearson code at a specific hour on a specific evening, does occasionally come up empty. The honest options are a different time, a different tutor with a proper handover, or a wait with a date attached. A tutor working from the wrong specification is worse than no tutor, because the student spends a term practising questions that will not appear on their paper.

Find the codes, sit one paper, then decide

If you are looking for an IGCSE home tutor in Al Muteena, two things are worth doing before you book anything. Find the statement of entry and write down the syllabus codes. Then have your child sit one full past paper under a clock and mark it against the published scheme, categorising every lost mark as content, method, misread or time. Those two steps cost an afternoon and tell a specialist more than a term of reports. The trial lesson works on that paper, names the largest category of loss and says how long it takes to shift, and no payment is taken before it. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; we do not offer home visits in the UAE.
