IB Chemistry Tutor in Al Muteena

A useful IB chemistry tutor in Al Muteena starts by asking which half of the syllabus is failing: Structure, where bonding and energetics live, or Reactivity, where organic mechanisms and equilibrium sit. The two need different repairs. This page explains both for Al Muteena families, and lessons are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Taught across both Structure and Reactivity halves of the current syllabus
  • Organic mechanisms drilled by arrow-pushing, not by memorising products
  • Investigation supervised against four criteria, written entirely by the student
  • A free trial lesson and a written diagnosis before any plan is agreed

Structure or Reactivity: finding out which half is costing the grade

Chemistry at Diploma level is two subjects taught under one name, and most students are only weak in one of them. The current syllabus is organised into Structure, which covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and classification of matter, and Reactivity, which covers what drives reactions, how much and how far reactions go, and the mechanisms by which they happen. A student losing marks on lattice enthalpy and a student losing marks on nucleophilic substitution have almost nothing in common, and tutoring that treats both as chemistry revision helps neither.

The assessment split explains where effort should go. Paper 1 carries 36% of the grade across a multiple-choice section and a data-based section. Paper 2 carries 44% and tests extended response, calculation and unfamiliar context. The Scientific Investigation carries the remaining 20%, marked out of 24 over four criteria, reported in no more than 3,000 words. Paper 2 is the largest single component and also the one most students practise least, because reading notes feels like revision and answering a multi-step question does not.

Al Muteena families sit in the older half of Dubai, with most of the cluster's Diploma Programme teaching a short bus ride away towards Al Garhoud, and a dense surrounding population in Deira, Hor Al Anz and Al Nahda. Chemistry at Higher Level is taught by a limited number of teachers in any city. Asking one of them to drive into Deira on a weekday evening reduces that number further, and the market prices the journey: published in-home rates in Dubai run from roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour.

IB Gram teaches Al Muteena students one-to-one over live video, with the student's own paper, data booklet pages and marked investigation draft shared on screen. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are an India-only service. For a subject this specialised the format is the point: the shortlist becomes people who teach this syllabus and have supervised investigations through all four criteria, rather than people within driving distance.

What follows is the detail a parent can test a tutor against. The six syllabus areas and what each one costs students. Organic chemistry, which decides more grades than any other topic. The data booklet and how to use it under time. The investigation, criterion by criterion, including the choice between a wet-lab and a database study. What specialist chemistry tuition costs in this market, with every figure attributed. And the question Al Muteena parents ask most often, which is whether Higher Level chemistry is the right route for medicine.

One note on how to read what follows. Every syllabus structure, mark allocation and published rate here is stated so that it can be checked, either against the board's own documents or against the provider that quoted the figure. Ask a prospective chemistry tutor which of the six areas is weakest and why, which component the first month targets, and what the four investigation criteria are worth. A chemistry teacher answers each of those in one sentence.

At a glance

  • Structure and Reactivity each contain three syllabus areas with different failure modes
  • Paper 2 is 44% of the grade and the least-practised component
  • The investigation is 20%, marked out of 24, capped at 3,000 words
  • Organic mechanisms are the highest-yield single topic for most students
  • The data booklet is a skill: knowing where a value lives saves minutes per paper
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry requests from this part of Dubai arrive from three places in a student's school career. The Diploma course is the common one, but the two routes into it are where the preventable problems start.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

Diploma Programme Chemistry

Two years across Structure and Reactivity, assessed by Paper 1, Paper 2 and the Scientific Investigation. Higher Level extends the same areas rather than adding separate options, and sits longer papers. The practical programme runs through both years and feeds the investigation, which is usually designed in DP1 and submitted in DP2.

Dubai schools examine in the May session, so a DP2 student in Al Muteena works towards a spring examination window with the investigation due to the school considerably earlier. The internal deadline is the date that governs the household, and it is usually several months before anything external.

MYPAges 14-16 · MYP 4-5

MYP Sciences into DP Chemistry

MYP sciences are marked against four criteria out of eight each, rewarding inquiry, communication and reflection. DP chemistry replaces much of that with moles, stoichiometry and mechanism, all of which demand algebraic confidence. Students who scored well in MYP often struggle in the first term of DP1, and the reason is usually arithmetic rather than chemistry.

Because several schools serving Al Muteena run MYP to Year 11 before the Diploma, this transition happens locally every year. Six weeks of mole calculations, unit conversions and significant figures over the summer does more for a DP chemistry grade than any amount of reading ahead.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Chemistry into DP Chemistry

Cambridge 0620 and Pearson 4CH1 both cover bonding, moles, rates, equilibrium and basic organic chemistry at lower mathematical demand. The step into the Diploma is about explaining with models rather than recalling facts, and about handling organic chemistry as a mechanism rather than a list of reactions to remember.

Old Dubai has British and IB secondaries within a few kilometres of each other, so a student may sit IGCSE at one and the Diploma at another. Where that happens, the summer between Year 11 and DP1 is the most useful and least used tutoring window in the entire two-year plan.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the chemistry areas Al Muteena students bring to a first session most often, described by what the examination asks rather than by topic title.

Models of the particulate nature of matter

SL and HL

Atomic structure, electron configuration, ionisation energy trends and the mole concept. Mark loss here is almost always arithmetic: moles, concentration and limiting reagent calculations done without unit discipline, so a correct method produces a wrong answer.

Models of bonding and structure

SL and HL

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, intermolecular forces, shapes of molecules and lattice behaviour. Students lose marks explaining physical properties, because they name the bonding without connecting it to the property the question asked about.

Classification of matter

SL and HL

The periodic table, periodicity trends, transition metals and organic families. Trend questions are marked for the explanation rather than the direction, and a student who states that a quantity increases without saying why earns nothing.

What drives reactions: energetics and entropy

SL and HL

Enthalpy changes, Hess cycles, bond enthalpies, entropy and Gibbs energy at Higher Level. Sign errors dominate, and Hess cycle questions are won by drawing the cycle before calculating rather than attempting it algebraically.

How much, how fast, how far

SL and HL

Stoichiometry, rates, equilibrium, acids and bases, and redox. Equilibrium questions test whether Le Chatelier is understood as a prediction tool rather than recited, and buffer and pH calculations are a reliable source of lost marks.

Organic mechanisms

SL and HL

Functional groups, nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition, elimination and, at Higher Level, extended mechanism work. This is the highest-yield topic in the subject: students who learn arrow-pushing rather than memorising products gain across multiple papers at once.

Paper 1B data-based questions

SL and HL

Unfamiliar data, graph interpretation, uncertainty and significant figures. The skill transfers from the practical programme and is trainable in a few sessions, yet it is rarely practised separately from the multiple-choice half of Paper 1.

Using the data booklet under time

SL and HL

The booklet is provided, and knowing where a value lives is worth minutes in a paper. Students who have never navigated it deliberately waste time searching, and some attempt calculations from memory when the correct constant was two pages away.

The Scientific Investigation

SL and HL

One independent investigation, up to 3,000 words, marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. A tutor questions the design and comments on the student's own writing, and does not produce any part of the report.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Chemistry support takes three shapes depending on where the student is in the course and which component is leaking marks. Each is set out with its limits.

Weekly syllabus and paper sessions

A fixed sixty or ninety minute slot through the term covering the area currently being taught, with retrieval on earlier ones. Ninety minutes suits chemistry because a Paper 2 question with full working plus a review of where the marks went does not fit into an hour.

  • Aligned to the school's sequence through Structure and Reactivity
  • Timed Paper 2 questions marked against the published scheme
  • Data booklet navigation practised deliberately, not incidentally
  • Written session notes with a short practice set each week

Organic chemistry block

Four to six sessions dedicated to mechanisms, because this is the topic with the largest return per hour. The approach is arrow-pushing from first principles, so the student can predict a product they have never seen rather than recall one they have. Suited to a DP1 student mid-course or a DP2 student whose mocks show organic as the clear weakness.

  • Functional groups and reactivity patterns built in order
  • Nucleophilic substitution and electrophilic addition drilled by mechanism
  • Unfamiliar reagents predicted rather than memorised
  • Higher Level extension covered where the student is entered for it

Investigation supervision

A short block around the Scientific Investigation, run as questioning and written feedback on the student's own work. The tutor challenges the research question, the variable control, the uncertainty treatment and the evaluation, and returns comments. No part of the report is written, redrafted or produced by the tutor.

  • Research question narrowed until it is measurable with available apparatus
  • Wet-lab against database investigation considered honestly
  • Uncertainty and graphing reviewed against the criteria
  • Feedback in writing on the student's own draft only

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Muteena

01

The six syllabus areas and what each one costs students

Chemistry is organised into two halves with three areas each. Structure contains models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and classification of matter. Reactivity contains what drives reactions, how much and how far reactions go, and the mechanisms by which reactions happen. Higher Level extends the same areas rather than adding separate options, which means there is nothing to drop and depth is distributed throughout.

Each area fails students in a characteristic way, and that is more useful to a parent than a content list. The particulate area fails on arithmetic: mole, concentration and limiting-reagent calculations performed without unit discipline. The bonding area fails on explanation: a student names the intermolecular force and never connects it to the physical property the question asked about. Classification fails on trend questions, where the direction of a trend earns nothing without the reason.

On the Reactivity side, energetics fails on sign conventions and on attempting Hess cycles algebraically instead of drawing them. Equilibrium and acid-base fails when Le Chatelier is recited as a rule rather than applied as a prediction, and when buffer or pH calculations are approached without a clear method. Mechanisms fail when organic chemistry has been memorised as a list of products, which works until the paper asks about a reagent the student has not seen.

A single marked paper usually identifies which two of those six are responsible for most of the gap, and the first month of tutoring then has a defensible agenda. A plan that says chemistry revision cannot be checked by a parent; a plan that says energetics sign discipline and organic mechanism can.

Organic chemistry: the highest-yield topic in the subject

  • Curly arrows are marked: start at the electron pair, end where it goes
  • Reactivity follows from electronegativity and leaving-group stability
  • Unfamiliar reagents are the point of the question, not an unfair surprise
  • Naming conventions earn marks that students routinely surrender
  • Four to six focused sessions is a realistic size for this block

If a student can only fix one thing before the papers, organic chemistry is usually it. The reason is structural: organic questions appear in both papers, carry multiple marks each, and reward a single transferable skill rather than a large body of recall. A student who understands why a nucleophile attacks where it does can answer a question about a reagent they have never met, and a student who memorised reactions cannot.

The common failure is a teaching artefact. Organic chemistry is often first met as a table of starting materials, conditions and products, and that table works for a while. It stops working the moment the examination presents an unfamiliar molecule, which it reliably does, because the point of the topic is to test whether the student can reason from electron movement. The repair is to go back to electronegativity, partial charges and leaving-group stability, then rebuild the reactions as consequences rather than facts.

Mechanism drawing also carries marks of its own. Curly arrows start at an electron pair and end where those electrons go, and examiners mark the arrows. Students who sketch an approximate mechanism and rely on the written explanation lose marks that were available for the diagram alone. This is a presentation skill, and like all presentation skills it can be fixed in a few sessions.

At Higher Level the extended mechanism content rewards exactly the same approach, which is why a block of four to six focused sessions on organic chemistry often shifts a grade more than a longer general revision programme. The tutoring decision worth making is to spend that block early enough in DP2 that the student has time to use it on past papers.

03

Paper 2, the data booklet and the clock

Paper 2 carries 44% of the chemistry grade. It presents calculation, extended response and unfamiliar context, and it is the paper that separates students who understand the chemistry from students who remember it. It is also the paper that rewards a set of mechanical habits which have nothing to do with chemistry at all, and those habits are the fastest available improvement for most candidates.

The data booklet is the first of them. It is provided in the examination, it contains constants, equations and spectral data, and students who have never navigated it deliberately lose minutes searching or attempt a calculation from memory when the correct value was two pages away. Practising with the booklet open, so that the student knows which page holds what, is a twenty-minute investment that pays across the whole paper.

The second habit is calculation layout: units written at every line, working set out so that a method mark survives an arithmetic slip, and a final answer given to a sensible number of significant figures. The third is reading the command term and the mark allocation together, because a two-mark explain and a four-mark explain require different answers and students routinely write the same one for both.

The fourth is time. A chemistry paper does not reward a flawless first half followed by blank space. Timed sections marked honestly against the published scheme are the only way to train this, and most students have never read a mark scheme for an answer they wrote. Doing that once is usually the most informative hour of the term.

04

Choosing an investigation: wet lab or database study

The Scientific Investigation is 20% of the grade and the only part of it a student controls over months rather than hours. The first decision is the type of investigation, and it is made badly more often than any other choice in the course. A wet-lab study gives the student real data and real uncertainty, which the data analysis and evaluation criteria reward well. A database study removes apparatus constraints and can produce a much larger dataset, but it makes the research design criterion harder to satisfy, because methodology has to be justified without the student controlling the measurement.

The criteria are the deciding factor, and there are four of them worth six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Research design loses marks when the research question is broader than the data can answer, or when variables are listed without a justified method of control. Data analysis loses marks when uncertainty is mentioned rather than propagated. Conclusion loses marks when the result is restated instead of interpreted against accepted chemistry. Evaluation loses marks when the limitations listed would fit any experiment ever performed.

Practical constraints matter in a Dubai school. Apparatus availability, laboratory time and the school's safety policy all shape what is possible, and a research question that requires equipment the school does not have is a question that will be abandoned in week three. A good supervision session tests feasibility before it tests ambition, which is unglamorous and saves a term.

The boundary on a tutor's role is firm. The investigation must be the student's own work. A tutor may question the research question, challenge the variable control, flag an uncertainty treatment that will not survive marking, and comment in writing on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not write, redraft or produce any part of it. One page competing for these queries sells completed investigations outright; that is malpractice, and the consequences fall on the student.

What chemistry tuition costs here, read from the cheapest end upwards

Start at the bottom of the market, because that is where the information is. EdFlik advertises tuition from AED 45 to AED 65 an hour and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to AED 52. At those rates a family is buying a general tutor or a university student, which can be the right choice for homework supervision and is almost never the right choice for Higher Level chemistry mechanisms. Moving up, Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200, which is the band where a trained subject teacher appears.

Above that, specialist IB and IGCSE tuition is quoted at roughly AED 200 to AED 450 or more an hour, with TutorChase at AED 270 and BartyED publishing AED 650 for a premium named tutor. The spread from the cheapest to the most expensive quoted figure is more than fifteenfold, for something every provider in that list describes as one-to-one tuition. The label carries almost no information, which is why a parent should ask what syllabus the tutor teaches and which papers they have marked rather than comparing hourly numbers.

In-home visits in Dubai are published at roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, with the Bestimate survey placing the usual band at AED 180 to AED 350. The portion above the online rate is travel, and for Al Muteena specifically it is travel into Deira at the worst hour of the day. Monthly, Bestimate estimates roughly AED 240 to AED 600 for budget tutoring on a weekly one-hour pattern, AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle band and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year work.

IB Gram publishes no hourly table on this page. The model is a free trial lesson, a written diagnosis, then a plan sized to the diagnosis, because a DP1 student repairing energetics and a DP2 student six weeks from the papers need different hours. Every figure above belongs to the provider or survey named beside it and should be checked on their current page before a family relies on it.

Will Higher Level chemistry work for medicine and engineering?

This is the question Al Muteena parents ask most often about chemistry, and it deserves a careful answer rather than an encouraging one. Chemistry at Higher Level is a common requirement for medicine and dentistry courses and a frequent requirement for several engineering and life-science routes, but requirements are set by individual universities and faculties and they change. The only reliable method is to read the entry requirements for the specific courses on the specific university's own admissions pages, in the student's intended application cycle.

What a tutor can usefully contribute is the subject-combination conversation. Higher Level chemistry taken alongside Higher Level biology and Standard Level mathematics is a different application profile from chemistry with physics and Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level. Some courses specify a mathematics route; some specify a second science; some ask for a minimum grade in a named subject rather than a total score. Those constraints should be checked before DP1 subject choices are locked, which is usually earlier than families realise.

A second honest point: no tutor should imply that tutoring is required for a university place, or that a grade can be promised. Admission depends on the student's whole profile and on the institution's own process. What tutoring can do is remove avoidable mark loss in a subject the student is already studying, which is a narrower and more defensible claim.

For UAE-specific recognition, the Ministry of Education's equivalency rules are the separate question. The British-track requirements are published: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one A Level at grade E or two AS Levels at the same grade. No IB points threshold is published here, because no figure could be verified on the Ministry's own pages, and an unsourced number on that subject would be irresponsible.

07

Online chemistry, the laboratory and the Ramadan calendar

Two practical questions follow from the format. The first is whether chemistry can be taught over video when the subject involves apparatus. The laboratory belongs to the school: it runs the practical programme and supervises the investigation. A tutor's contribution to practical work is design, uncertainty treatment and analysis, which happen on paper and on screen. For mechanisms, calculations, data questions and examination technique, a shared screen with the student's own marked paper on it is at least as effective as a table at home, and mechanism drawing on a shared digital surface is better because both parties annotate the same diagram.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in the UAE. Lessons for Al Muteena families are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visits are offered only in India. Stating this plainly is better than the alternative practised by pages that route UAE parents to a non-UAE telephone number without disclosing where the teaching happens.

The second practical question is the UAE calendar, which almost no competitor page addresses. Ramadan shortens the school day across Dubai and shifts household routines substantially, with study time moving to late evening after Iftar for many families. Sessions can be rescheduled into post-Iftar slots for the month, and a sensible revision plan treats that month as different rather than pretending it is a normal term. Winter and spring breaks, Eid holidays and National Day all interact with mock windows, and a plan built without them is a plan that quietly collapses.

The useful habit is to map the term before buying hours: school assessment dates, the investigation deadline, the mock window, Ramadan and the holidays. What remains is the real tutoring window, and sizing a plan to it produces something a family keeps for twelve weeks instead of abandoning in week three.

Where we tutor

The Al Muteena catchment for a Diploma chemistry request

Higher Level chemistry is taught at fewer schools than mathematics, so chemistry enquiries come from a wider ring of neighbourhoods than subject-specific maths ones. These are the areas involved.

Al Muteena

Apartment blocks either side of Al Muteena Street, near Abu Baker Al Siddique metro. Most Diploma students here travel out towards Al Garhoud and are home around 4.15pm to 4.30pm in term time.

Deira

Directly adjacent, sharing bus routes and school cohorts. A chemistry plan built for an Al Muteena student transfers to a Deira one without modification, because the teacher and the internal deadlines are usually the same.

Al Garhoud

Where much of the cluster's Diploma teaching sits, close to Dubai Festival City. Students from here have the shortest journey home and can realistically take a ninety-minute session on a weekday.

Hor Al Anz

North-east of Al Muteena and continuous with it in practice. Chemistry requests from here reach the same school cohorts, so the diagnostic questions and the syllabus areas involved are identical.

Al Nahda

On the Sharjah boundary, where families may use schools regulated by KHDA in Dubai and SPEA in Sharjah. The heaviest evening traffic in the cluster, so an online slot after 5.45pm is the dependable option.

Oud Metha and Karama

South across the creek, with a large secondary population and a steady flow of students taking Higher Level chemistry with medicine or engineering in mind. Mathematics support is often requested alongside.

Al Qusais

A daily destination for part of the Al Muteena cohort and home to several long-established secondaries. The shortest bus run here makes an early session practical even during term.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and a marked paper

Higher or Standard Level, the school, where the class has reached in Structure and Reactivity, and the last marked chemistry paper. If an investigation draft has teacher comments, send those too. Documents are more useful than descriptions because they show where the marks actually went.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson and a written diagnosis

Taught by the tutor proposed for the ongoing slot. It produces a short written note naming the two syllabus areas and the component responsible for most of the gap, plus what the first four sessions should cover. No payment is required to get that note.

  3. 03

Name the target of the first block

Organic mechanisms, energetics sign discipline, data booklet and calculation layout, Paper 2 technique, or investigation supervision. A named target lets a parent ask a specific question after a month instead of wondering whether anything changed.

  4. 04

Weekly work marked against the scheme

Timed questions marked against the published mark scheme, with the student reading what the scheme rewarded rather than being told. Each session ends with a short practice set and a written note of what to bring back next time.

  5. 05

Switch to examination behaviour before the session

In the final six to eight weeks the agenda becomes command terms, booklet navigation, significant figures and full timed papers. If the investigation is still open, it takes priority, because its marks are fixed and its deadline does not move.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The diagnosis names an area, not a subject

Chemistry help is not a plan. Energetics sign conventions and organic mechanism are a plan. Every block here targets one or two of the six syllabus areas or one named component, so a parent can check progress against something specific after four weeks.

Organic chemistry is taught as reasoning

Memorised product tables fail the moment the paper presents an unfamiliar reagent, which it reliably does. Sessions rebuild the topic from electronegativity, partial charge and leaving-group stability so that a student can predict rather than recall.

The investigation is supervised, not supplied

A tutor challenges the research question, the control of variables and the uncertainty treatment, and comments in writing on the student's own draft. Nobody writes any part of the report. One page in this market sells finished investigations; the risk of that lands on the student.

Rates on this page belong to whoever published them

Each AED band is credited to the provider or survey that quoted it, so a parent can verify it. IB Gram quotes no hourly table here because required hours vary too much, and starts instead with a free trial lesson and a written diagnosis.

University requirements are checked, not asserted

Chemistry at Higher Level is commonly required for medicine, but requirements belong to individual faculties and change. The honest instruction is to read the course's own admissions page in the relevant cycle, and no tutor should imply tuition is required for a place.

The UAE calendar is planned around

Ramadan shortens the school day and moves study to post-Iftar hours; Eid, National Day and the mock window all compete with the investigation deadline. Mapping the term before buying hours produces a plan a family actually keeps.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Muteena: your questions answered

How is the current IB chemistry syllabus divided up?+

Into two halves of three areas each. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives reactions, how much and how far reactions go, and reaction mechanisms. Higher Level extends the same areas rather than adding separate option topics, so there is nothing to drop and the extra depth is spread throughout. For tutoring this matters because a weakness in one half tells you almost nothing about the other, and the diagnosis has to name the area rather than the subject.

Which chemistry topic gives the biggest grade improvement per hour?+

Organic mechanisms, for most students. Organic questions appear in both papers, carry several marks each, and reward one transferable skill rather than a large body of recall. A student who understands why a nucleophile attacks where it does can answer about a reagent they have never met; a student who memorised a product table cannot. Four to six focused sessions rebuilding the topic from electronegativity, partial charges and leaving-group stability usually moves more marks than the same hours spread across general revision.

My daughter finds organic chemistry impossible. Is that fixable before the papers?+

Usually, because the problem is normally how it was first learned rather than ability. Organic chemistry is often introduced as a table of starting materials, conditions and products, which works until the examination presents an unfamiliar molecule. The repair is to go back to electron movement: where partial charges sit, why a leaving group leaves, what a curly arrow means. Mechanism drawing also carries marks in its own right, and arrows are marked, so a student relying on written explanation alone is surrendering credit that was available from the diagram.

What is the data booklet and why does it matter for Paper 2?+

It is the reference material provided in the examination, holding constants, equations and spectral data. It matters because familiarity with it is worth minutes across a paper. Students who have never navigated it deliberately either waste time searching for a value or attempt a calculation from memory when the correct constant was two pages away. Practising with the booklet open until the student knows which page holds what is a twenty-minute investment that pays off on every calculation question, and it is one of the cheapest improvements available before a paper.

What proportion of the DP chemistry grade sits in the scientific investigation?+

Twenty per cent, marked out of 24 across four criteria worth six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The report is capped at 3,000 words. It is the only part of the grade a student controls over months instead of hours, and it is where capable students most often leave marks behind, usually by writing a long theoretical background that earns nothing and compressing the evaluation that carries six marks. Reading the criteria before starting to write rather than afterwards is the highest-return advice available.

Should the investigation be a laboratory experiment or a database study?+

It depends on which criteria the student can satisfy. A wet-lab study gives real data and real uncertainty, which suits the data analysis and evaluation criteria. A database study removes apparatus limits and can produce a far larger dataset, but makes research design harder to justify because the student did not control the measurement. Feasibility is the other half of the decision: a question needing equipment the school does not stock will be abandoned in week three. Test feasibility before ambition, which is unglamorous and saves a term.

Where exactly does a chemistry tutor's help on the investigation stop?+

At the writing. A tutor may teach the chemistry, explain what each criterion rewards, question the research question until it is measurable, challenge the control of variables, flag an uncertainty treatment that will not survive marking, and comment in writing on a draft the student wrote. A tutor may not write, redraft or produce any part of the report, nor supply a method to copy. The test a parent can apply is whether their child typed the words. A provider selling finished investigations is creating risk that falls on the student, not on itself.

Does a medicine application from Dubai actually require chemistry at Higher Level?+

It is a common requirement for medicine and dentistry and a frequent one for several life-science and engineering routes, but requirements are set by individual universities and faculties and they change. Read the specific course's own admissions page for the student's application cycle; no tutoring page should state a requirement on a university's behalf. The useful conversation is about subject combination, since some courses specify a second science or a particular mathematics route, and those constraints should be checked before DP1 choices are locked rather than afterwards.

What does specialist chemistry tutoring cost in Dubai at the moment?+

Published market figures put IB and IGCSE specialist tuition at roughly AED 200 to AED 450 or more an hour. TutorChase quotes AED 270, BartyED publishes AED 650 for a premium named tutor, and Unitors advertises IB from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. Lower down, EdFlik lists from AED 45 to AED 65 and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to AED 52, which buys general academic support rather than Higher Level mechanism teaching. These are market rates with named sources, not an IB Gram price list, and should be verified on each provider's current page.

Does a tutor come to our apartment in Al Muteena for chemistry sessions?+

No. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; that service exists only in India. Al Muteena lessons are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. In-home chemistry tutoring is available locally from independent tutors and agencies at published rates of roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour, and it is a legitimate option. The trade-off is the shortlist: a tutor must be both a Higher Level chemistry teacher and willing to drive into Deira in the evening, and those rarely coincide.

Can an Al Muteena family move chemistry sessions to post-Iftar slots?+

They move. The school day shortens across Dubai during Ramadan and household routines change substantially, with study time shifting to late evening after Iftar in many families. Sessions can be rescheduled into post-Iftar slots for the month rather than forced into a timetable nobody can keep. A sensible plan treats the month as different and maps it alongside Eid, National Day, the school mock window and the investigation deadline before any hours are bought. What is left after that mapping is the real tutoring window.

Can chemistry really be taught without a laboratory on screen?+

The laboratory belongs to the school, which runs the practical programme and supervises the investigation. A tutor's contribution to practical work is design, uncertainty treatment and analysis, all of which happen on paper. For mechanisms, calculations, data-based questions and examination technique, a shared screen with the student's own marked paper on it works at least as well as a kitchen table, and mechanism drawing is better on a shared digital surface because both people annotate the same diagram. What video cannot give is physical presence, which some students do need.

My son is in DP1. Is it too early for chemistry tutoring?+

DP1 is usually the better time, not the early one. Two windows matter most: the term in which energetics and bonding are taught, because both are conceptual repairs that compound if left alone, and the months in which the investigation is designed. A DP2 student arriving with a conceptual gap and a submitted investigation has fewer options and needs more hours to achieve less. A DP1 student with one weak area and an open investigation is in the strongest position tutoring can work with.

After a month of chemistry sessions, what should an Al Muteena parent check?+

By checking something specific that was agreed in advance. If the first block targeted organic mechanism, then after four weeks the student should be able to predict the product of a reaction they have not seen and draw the arrows for it. If it targeted calculation layout, the marked work should show units at every line and method marks surviving arithmetic slips. Written session notes should match what you see at home. No score is invented and no grade is promised; what is measurable is whether named mark losses have stopped recurring.

Name the half of the syllabus first

Chemistry help becomes useful the moment someone can say which of the six syllabus areas is responsible for the gap, and whether the marks are going in Paper 2, Paper 1B or the investigation. Send the level, the last marked paper and any teacher comments on the investigation draft, and a free trial lesson will produce that answer in writing before you commit to a single paid hour. If the answer turns out to be organic mechanisms, you have found the topic with the best return per session in the whole course.
