IB Physics Tutor in Culture Village

An IB physics tutor in Culture Village earns their place on two things most tutors cannot do: propagate uncertainties correctly and mark a scientific investigation against its four criteria. The physics itself is widely taught. The uncertainty treatment and the twenty per cent internal assessment are where grades are actually decided, and they are where a general physics tutor runs out. Lessons are delivered one-to-one online on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Uncertainty propagation taught as a scored skill, not an afterthought
  • Lessons are live online one-to-one; IB Gram makes no UAE home visits
  • Scientific investigation support is feedback on the student's own work only

IB & IGCSE in Culture Village

The physics is the easy part

Plenty of people can teach mechanics. Fewer can explain why a student's otherwise excellent investigation scored eleven out of twenty-four, and that second capability is what decides an IB physics grade. The internally assessed scientific investigation is worth twenty per cent of the final mark and is assessed on four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Three of those four have very little to do with physics knowledge and everything to do with method.

The same pattern runs through the written papers. Data-based questions present unfamiliar material and reward a student who reads axes, units and uncertainty bars before reading the question. Extended-response questions reward a student who noticed that the command term asked for an explanation and supplied one rather than a description. Calculation questions reward a student who carried units through every stage and did not round an intermediate value. None of that is physics. All of it is marks.

Uncertainties deserve naming separately because they are the clearest example of a scored skill that students treat as bookkeeping. Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty. Adding absolute uncertainties for sums and differences. Adding percentage uncertainties for products and quotients. Multiplying percentage uncertainty by the index for a power. Determining a gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines through error bars. Those five rules appear in every series and are routinely half-remembered.

The current physics syllabus is organised into five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level covers additional content within those themes and is assessed with longer papers. Paper structures and durations were revised for the current guide, so we work from the subject guide your school holds rather than from a remembered arrangement, and your school's IB coordinator is the authority on it.

No IB session or results date appears anywhere on this page. The IB's own website blocks automated checking, so no date in this project has been confirmed from the IB directly, and an unverified exam date is something a family would plan a whole term of revision around. UAE schools sit the main May session. The dates that matter more to a physics plan are internal: the school's deadline for the investigation and its draft stages.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes in Culture Village or anywhere else in the UAE. Tuition for UAE families is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and home visiting is a service we operate only in India. For physics specifically, the common objection to online delivery is practical work, and it is worth answering directly: the investigation is designed, analysed and written by the student at school and at home, and what a tutor contributes is design critique, uncertainty treatment and criterion feedback, none of which requires being in the room.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Culture Village families need physics support at three points, and the work differs completely between them. These are the routes we cover.

DP HLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics at Higher Level

The five themes covered to greater depth, with additional content in each and longer written papers, plus the scientific investigation worth twenty per cent. Higher Level adds the mathematical demand that most often separates students: rotational dynamics, more developed treatment of fields, and quantum and nuclear content taken further.

Higher Level physics is among the thinnest specialist availabilities in the Dubai tutoring market, and the constraint is specific: a tutor needs both the content depth and experience of marking the investigation against its criteria. Within a drive of Jaddaf Waterfront that combination is rare. We confirm the investigation experience before the match rather than discovering its absence three weeks before a school deadline.

DP SLAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Physics at Standard Level

The same five themes at lower depth with shorter papers, and the same scientific investigation worth twenty per cent of the grade. Standard Level students frequently underestimate the investigation precisely because the written content is lighter, which leaves a fifth of the grade exposed.

The pattern we see from Culture Village families is a Standard Level student coping with the content and scoring poorly on the investigation, usually because the evaluation criterion received a paragraph. Since evaluation carries six of the twenty-four marks, that single habit can cost several per cent of the final grade, and it is correctable in two or three sessions if it is caught before the draft is finalised.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme Sciences

Criterion-assessed across knowing and understanding, inquiring and designing, processing and evaluating, and reflecting on the impacts of science, each marked out of eight. Integrated sciences in the early years, separating into physics, chemistry and biology later.

Inquiring and designing, and processing and evaluating, map almost directly onto the Diploma investigation's research design and data analysis criteria. A student who learned to control variables, justify a method and discuss anomalies in Year 10 arrives at a twenty per cent component already competent. That is the cheapest physics preparation available and it is bought years before anybody is worried.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

The route in from IGCSE physics

Most Culture Village pupils arrive from Cambridge IGCSE Physics 0625 or Pearson 4PH1. Both cover mechanics, waves, electricity and atomic physics, and both leave a gap in the mathematical treatment that the Diploma assumes, particularly in vectors, graph analysis and uncertainty.

The specific gap is uncertainty. IGCSE physics touches measurement error lightly; Diploma physics treats uncertainty propagation as an assessed skill across papers and in the investigation. A student entering Year 12 who has never added percentage uncertainties for a product is not behind on physics, they are missing a technique, and it takes a handful of sessions rather than a term.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The IB physics topics Culture Village families ask about, each named with where the marks are actually lost rather than a description of the content.

Kinematics and projectile motion

HL and SL

Displacement, velocity, acceleration, graphs of motion, and projectiles resolved into components. Students lose marks by treating a graph gradient as a number without units, and by resolving a projectile correctly and then using the full velocity in a vertical equation.

Forces, momentum and energy

HL and SL

Newton's laws, free-body diagrams, impulse and momentum conservation, work and energy. The standing failure is an incomplete free-body diagram: a missing normal force or a reaction drawn on the wrong body produces a confident wrong answer that later steps do not reveal.

Rotational dynamics

Higher Level

Torque, moment of inertia, angular momentum and rotational kinetic energy. The mathematical demand here is a step up and it is where Higher Level students most often ask for help, usually because moment of inertia expressions are recalled rather than understood.

Thermal physics and the particulate model

HL and SL

Temperature, internal energy, specific and latent heat, the ideal gas law and kinetic theory. Lost marks cluster in latent heat calculations where a phase change is missed, and in questions asking for a molecular explanation where a macroscopic one is given.

Wave behaviour

HL and SL

Travelling and standing waves, superposition, interference, diffraction, polarisation and the Doppler effect. Standing wave questions reward a labelled diagram showing nodes and antinodes; a verbal description of the same reasoning scores less.

Electric and magnetic fields

HL and SL

Field strength and potential, Coulomb's law, capacitance, circuits, electromagnetic induction and motor and generator principles. Sign and direction conventions are the reliable loss, particularly in induction questions where the direction of the induced current is asserted rather than derived.

Gravitational fields and orbits

HL and SL

Newton's law of gravitation, field strength, potential and orbital motion. Students confuse field strength with potential and lose marks on energy questions where the sign of gravitational potential energy matters to the argument.

Nuclear physics

HL and SL

Radioactive decay, half-life, binding energy, mass defect, fission and fusion. Binding energy per nucleon arguments are where the marks are, and most lost marks come from quoting the shape of the curve without using it to answer the question asked.

Quantum physics

HL and SL

The photoelectric effect, wave-particle duality, atomic spectra and energy levels. The photoelectric effect is the classic case where a student describes the observation and never states which part of the classical model it contradicts, which is the explanation the question wanted.

Uncertainties and graphical analysis

HL and SL

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through sums, products and powers, error bars, and gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines. Assessed across the papers and central to the investigation, and routinely half-remembered.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL · 20% of the grade

An individual investigation assessed on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each for twenty-four in total. Three of the four criteria concern method rather than physics, and evaluation is the one most often reduced to a paragraph.

Data-based questions

HL and SL

Unfamiliar data presented in graphs and tables, with questions about trends, uncertainties and conclusions. The discriminator is reading the axes, units and error bars before reading the question, which is a habit rather than knowledge.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Culture Village families use IB physics support, all delivered one-to-one online over live video on Gulf Standard Time. The format follows the component rather than the level of worry.

Uncertainty and graphical analysis block

Four to six sessions on uncertainty propagation, error bars and gradient uncertainty, which is the single most transferable block in the subject. It serves the written papers and the investigation simultaneously, and it is the gap most students carry in from IGCSE physics.

  • The five propagation rules taught as rules, then drilled
  • Error bars and maximum and minimum gradient lines, on real data
  • Significant figure and unit discipline in multi-stage calculations
  • Serves the papers and the investigation at the same time

Scientific investigation coaching

Design critique before data collection, then criterion-by-criterion feedback on the student's own draft. The tutor never writes, restructures to a standard, or supplies data or analysis, and we state that before any work begins.

  • Research design critiqued before any data is collected
  • Each of the four criteria explained in plain terms, with its six marks
  • Evaluation given the weight the criterion actually carries
  • A session note recording whose work was in front of us

Content and paper technique

Weekly or block work on named topics, plus data-based question practice and command-term discipline. Papers are marked against the published scheme question by question, with the loss list driving the following weeks.

  • Topics chosen by what a marked paper exposed
  • Free-body diagrams and direction conventions drilled explicitly
  • Data-based questions practised as a reading habit first
  • Command term work using the published glossary

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Culture Village

01

Uncertainties: the marks almost nobody claims

If a Culture Village family buys one block of physics support, this is the one with the widest return. Uncertainty treatment is assessed across the written papers and sits at the centre of the data analysis and evaluation criteria in the investigation. It is also the part of physics that students most reliably treat as bookkeeping rather than as content, which means the marks are available and unclaimed.

The rules are few and they are rules rather than judgements, which is why they are teachable quickly. Absolute uncertainty is the raw figure. Fractional uncertainty is that figure divided by the measurement, and percentage uncertainty is the fraction expressed as a percentage. For sums and differences, add the absolute uncertainties. For products and quotients, add the percentage uncertainties. For a power, multiply the percentage uncertainty by the index. Five statements, and most students can quote three of them.

Graphical uncertainty is where the higher marks sit and where the teaching is thinnest. A student needs to plot error bars, draw maximum and minimum gradient lines through them, and determine the gradient uncertainty from the difference. That is a procedure, not an insight, and a student who has done it six times does it reliably under exam pressure. A student who has read about it produces a line of best fit and asserts an uncertainty.

The companion habits are unit and significant figure discipline. A final answer whose uncertainty is quoted to three significant figures when the measurement supports one is wrong in a way that costs marks, and an uncertainty stated without the unit of the quantity is incomplete. None of this is difficult. All of it is conventional, and conventional marks are the cheapest marks in any science subject.

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion

Twenty per cent of the grade sits here, marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Printing that allocation is the single most useful thing this page can do for a Culture Village parent, because it shows immediately where the work is. Three of the four criteria concern how the investigation was built and interrogated rather than what the physics was.

Research design is the criterion decided before any data exists. It rewards a focused research question, a method capable of answering it, a clear identification of variables, and attention to safety and ethics where relevant. A research question too broad to answer with the available apparatus caps the entire investigation, which is why a design critique before data collection is the highest-value conversation available on this component and the one most frequently skipped.

Data analysis and conclusion are where the physics finally appears, and even here the marks are procedural: processing recorded correctly, uncertainties propagated, graphs appropriate with error bars, and a conclusion that is justified by the data rather than by expectation. Under the conclusion criterion the commonest failure is restating a textbook relationship the data did not actually demonstrate, which is scored against rather than for.

Evaluation is the criterion that costs most marks in practice. Six marks, and students routinely give it a paragraph. It wants the strengths and weaknesses of the method identified specifically, the limitations explained in terms of their effect on the result, and realistic improvements proposed. A modest experiment thoroughly evaluated outscores an impressive one barely discussed, which inverts what most students assume about how a science investigation is judged.

03

Command terms in physics, and the explanation that was never given

  • Explain wants a causal account; a description earns little however accurate
  • The photoelectric effect is the classic case: state the contradiction, not the observation
  • State wants no working; determine wants a value with its reasoning
  • Command term work transfers across every Diploma subject the student takes

The IB publishes command terms and in physics they produce a recognisable failure. A question says explain and the student describes. The description is accurate, the physics is understood, and the marks are not awarded, because the mark scheme was looking for a causal account and received a sequence of observations. That is the single most common avoidable loss in physics extended-response questions.

The distinction is sharper in physics than in other subjects because the subject offers so many describable phenomena. Take the photoelectric effect. A student can accurately describe that electrons are emitted above a threshold frequency, that intensity affects current and not energy, and that emission is instantaneous. A question asking them to explain why this challenges the classical wave model wants the contradiction stated: a wave model predicts that sufficient intensity should eventually eject electrons at any frequency, and it does not happen. The description earns little; the contradiction earns the marks.

The other high-cost terms are state, which wants no working and gets a page of it, and determine, which wants a value with its supporting reasoning and frequently gets the value alone. Outline and discuss sit at different depths and are not interchangeable. None of this is hard to fix, and the published glossary is the whole curriculum for fixing it.

One session with the glossary and three past extended-response questions typically moves more marks than a month of content review, and the gain transfers to every other subject the student takes, because the same command terms carry the same meanings across the Diploma. For a Culture Village family working to a budget it is among the best returns per hour available, and it is almost never the thing requested.

04

Where physics marks disappear, topic by topic

  • Incomplete free-body diagrams are the largest single loss in mechanics
  • Induced current direction asserted rather than derived from a stated rule
  • Sign of gravitational potential energy mishandled in energy arguments
  • Unit carriage through multi-stage calculations, written beside every value

Beyond uncertainties and the investigation, physics losses cluster in a short list of named places. They are worth stating specifically, because a tutor who can name them has taught the course, and because a student who has met them once rarely repeats them. Almost all of them are habits of representation rather than gaps in understanding.

Free-body diagrams lead the list. An incomplete diagram, with a missing normal force or a reaction drawn acting on the wrong body, produces a wrong answer that no later step reveals. The fix is procedural: draw every force, label the body it acts on, and check that every force has a partner somewhere in the system. Students who do this on every mechanics question stop losing mechanics marks almost immediately.

Direction and sign conventions are second, and they bite hardest in electromagnetic induction and in gravitational and electric potential. An induced current direction asserted rather than derived from a stated rule, or a gravitational potential energy treated as positive in an energy argument, both convert correct physics into a wrong answer. The habit is to state the convention being used at the top of the answer, which also makes partial credit recoverable.

Third is unit carriage in multi-stage calculations. A student who converts centimetres to metres at step one and forgets at step three produces an answer out by a factor and loses the accuracy mark on correct reasoning. Writing the unit beside every intermediate value is the fix, and it has the useful side effect of making dimensional errors visible before the final line.

05

Higher Level against Standard Level

  • Both levels cover the same five themes; HL adds content and depth within them
  • The investigation is 20% at both levels, marked out of 24 on the same four criteria
  • HL difficulty is substantially mathematical, which is why HL maths is often requested alongside
  • Paper structures were revised for the current guide; the school's subject guide governs

Both levels cover the same five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level covers additional content within those themes and is assessed with longer papers. The scientific investigation is worth twenty per cent at both levels and is marked against the same four criteria out of twenty-four, which is the fact that most surprises families.

The practical difference at Higher Level is mathematical demand rather than volume alone. Rotational dynamics, the more developed treatment of fields, and the extended quantum and nuclear content all assume comfort with manipulation that a student arriving from IGCSE physics may not have. This is why Higher Level physics and Higher Level mathematics are so often requested together: the physics problem is frequently a mathematics problem wearing a physics question.

The difference that matters for choosing support is availability. Higher Level physics with investigation experience is among the thinnest combinations in the Dubai tutoring market, because it requires both content depth and familiarity with a criterion-marked component. Within a drive of Jaddaf Waterfront that combination is rare; nationally it is reachable. That is the practical argument for online delivery in this subject, stated without decoration.

Paper structures and durations were revised for the current physics guide, so this page deliberately does not state them. The subject guide your school holds is the authority, and your school's IB coordinator can confirm both the paper arrangement and the internal deadline for the investigation. A tutor quoting a paper structure from a previous syllabus version is a liability rather than an expert, and that is worth testing in a free trial lesson.

06

The practical work question, answered directly

  • A tutor over video has no apparatus, and we will not pretend otherwise
  • The investigation is carried out by the student under their teacher's supervision
  • A tutor contributes design critique, uncertainty treatment, analysis and criterion feedback
  • Practical skills in the written papers are a reading and writing skill applied to physics

The reasonable objection to online physics tuition is practical work, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a deflection. Physics involves apparatus, and a tutor over video has no apparatus. If the question is whether a tutor can run an experiment with your child, the answer is no, and no honest provider should imply otherwise.

What that objection misses is where the marks sit. The scientific investigation is designed, carried out and written by the student, in their school's laboratory and at home, under their teacher's supervision. A tutor's legitimate contribution is design critique before data collection, uncertainty treatment on the data the student gathered, graphing and analysis technique, and criterion-by-criterion feedback on their own draft. None of those four requires anybody to be holding a stopwatch.

The written papers reinforce the point. Practical skills are assessed on paper, through questions about apparatus, variable control, data handling and the evaluation of methods. Those are reading and writing skills applied to physics, and they are taught through worked examples and marked practice, which video delivers identically to a kitchen table. The data-based question in particular is a reading habit and nothing else.

Where a family genuinely wants hands-on support, the honest recommendation is the school. The teacher has the laboratory, the technician support and the duty of supervision, and an investigation is supposed to be supervised by them. A tutor who offered to run practical work alongside that would be duplicating something better provided and potentially complicating the academic honesty position on a component worth twenty per cent.

07

Academic honesty on a twenty per cent component

  • A tutor critiques design, checks uncertainties and gives criterion feedback
  • A tutor never supplies data, adjusts data or suggests removing an anomaly
  • Anomalies are evaluation material; honest discussion of them scores better
  • A session note records whose work was in front of us at each session

Because the investigation is worth twenty per cent and carries a school deadline, this is where pressure concentrates and where the honesty line gets tested. Work submitted for IB assessment must be the student's own. A tutor who writes, completes, substantially rewrites or supplies any part of an investigation creates a malpractice exposure for the candidate, and a finding can cost a Diploma. Providers in this market advertise completed internal assessments at a fixed price; the consequence lands on the student, not the seller.

The legitimate version is also the more useful one, and in physics it is unusually clear. A tutor can critique a research question before data exists, which is the intervention with the largest effect on the final mark. A tutor can check uncertainty propagation on data the student recorded. A tutor can explain what the evaluation criterion rewards and model an evaluation on a different, unrelated experiment, then hand the student's own back untouched. A tutor can teach referencing properly.

Data deserves a specific mention. A tutor must never supply data, adjust a student's data, or suggest that an anomalous point be removed to improve a trend. Anomalies are evaluation material, and a student who discusses an anomaly honestly scores better than one whose data looks suspiciously clean. That is a genuine case where the honest route and the high-scoring route are the same route, which is worth telling a worried student explicitly.

On materials, IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade boundary tables are copyright works. We reference and link them from the organisation's own site rather than reproducing them or supplying them as downloads, and we keep a short session note recording what was covered and whose work was in front of us, which is the document a parent can hand to a school if a question is ever raised.

08

Getting matched from Culture Village

  • Send level, investigation stage, its school deadline and two workable windows
  • In the trial, ask about power-rule uncertainty and the evaluation criterion's marks
  • One free trial lesson per student, with no payment or card details beforehand
  • HL physics with investigation experience is scarce; we give a realistic wait

Send the level, the stage the investigation has reached, the school's internal deadline for it, and two evening windows that genuinely work from Jaddaf Waterfront after the school run. Mention a weekend morning if you have one, because design critique and data analysis both need an uninterrupted stretch. We match a specialist and run one free trial lesson in the slot you intend to keep.

In that session, ask two questions. First, how a percentage uncertainty propagates through a quantity raised to a power. Second, how many marks the evaluation criterion carries and what it rewards. A tutor who teaches IB physics answers both without pausing. A strong general physics tutor will answer the first and hesitate on the second, which tells you exactly where the gap will appear three weeks before a school deadline.

If no specialist is free in your window we say so, give a realistic wait, and offer the nearest honest alternative rather than placing a general physics tutor against a criterion-marked component. Higher Level physics with investigation experience is among the thinnest combinations in this market, and scarcity peaks when internal deadlines cluster across Dubai schools. One trial per student, nothing charged beforehand, no card details required.

Two limits stated plainly. Nobody can promise a grade and this page does not. And nothing here implies tutoring is required for the Diploma to be awarded, for university admission or for UAE Ministry of Education equivalency; those are institutional and regulatory processes with their own published rules. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the International Baccalaureate, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, Cambridge or Pearson.

Where we tutor

Culture Village and the schools its physics students attend

Culture Village is Jaddaf Waterfront, Creek-side with no private school inside it, so its physics students are spread across several clusters. These are the districts involved.

Culture Village

Dubai Wharf and the Creek-side towers, with no private school inside the community. Short runs in every direction make a 16:30 session start realistic, which matters for the mathematical parts of physics more than for the descriptive ones.

Al Jaddaf

Directly adjacent, with Swiss International Scientific School Dubai in the district running IB programmes. The nearest Diploma provision to Culture Village and the shortest routine run of all.

Dubai Creek Harbour

Across the water on the Ras Al Khor side with no school inside the community. Students commute to the same clusters as Culture Village neighbours and get home roughly fifteen minutes later.

Business Bay and Downtown Dubai

A short run along the Creek, with no large private secondary school in either district. Parents working here often take the free trial themselves before committing a family slot.

Sobha Hartland and Mohammed Bin Rashid City

North London Collegiate School Dubai and Hartland International School, south along Al Khail Road. The school-run hour makes 17:00 the honest earliest start for pupils enrolled there.

Nad Al Sheba and Meydan

GEMS Modern Academy and neighbouring schools. The longest commute from Culture Village, where investigation drafting and data analysis work belong at weekends.

Dubai Festival City

Universal American School Dubai and Deira International School across the Creek. Close enough for a productive 16:45 session, with one crossing as the main risk to a fixed slot.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Culture Village

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Confirm the level and the investigation stage

Higher or Standard Level, and whether the investigation is at question, design, data collection, analysis or draft stage. The stage determines what help is possible: design critique can only happen before data exists, and that is the intervention with the largest effect.

  2. 02

    Buy the uncertainty block first

The five propagation rules, error bars and gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines. It serves the written papers and the investigation simultaneously, it is the gap most students carry in from IGCSE physics, and it is four to six sessions rather than a term.

  3. 03

Critique the research question before any data

A question too broad for the available apparatus caps all twenty-four marks, and it cannot be repaired once the data has been collected. One conversation at this stage is worth more than a dozen sessions on the draft, and it is the stage families most often skip.

  4. 04

Give evaluation the weight it carries

Six of the twenty-four marks, and routinely given a paragraph. Specific strengths and weaknesses, limitations explained in terms of their effect on the result, and realistic improvements. A modest experiment thoroughly evaluated outscores an impressive one barely discussed.

  5. 05

    Fix the representation habits

Complete free-body diagrams with the body labelled, stated direction and sign conventions, and units written beside every intermediate value. Those three habits remove most of the non-uncertainty losses in physics and each takes about a fortnight to embed.

  6. 06

Measure with a marked paper, then decide

A timed paper marked against the published scheme, with losses ranked by marks. If the ranked list shortens between papers the plan works. If it does not, the diagnosis was wrong and the plan changes rather than the hours increasing.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Uncertainties taught as a scored skill

Five propagation rules, error bars, and gradient uncertainty from maximum and minimum lines. It is assessed across the papers and central to the investigation's data analysis criterion, and it is the part of physics students most reliably treat as bookkeeping.

The investigation criteria printed, not alluded to

Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each for twenty-four, worth twenty per cent of the grade. No competitor page in this market publishes that allocation, and it is the information that shows a parent where the work actually is.

Evaluation given its six marks

The criterion that costs most marks in practice, because students give it a paragraph. A modest experiment thoroughly evaluated outscores an impressive one barely discussed, which inverts what most students assume about how a science investigation is judged.

Honest about practical work

A tutor over video has no apparatus and we will not imply otherwise. The investigation is carried out by the student under their teacher's supervision, and what a tutor contributes is design critique, uncertainty treatment, analysis and criterion feedback.

Honest about data as well

We never supply data, adjust data, or suggest removing an anomaly to improve a trend. Anomalies are evaluation material, so the honest route and the higher-scoring route are the same route, and a worried student should be told that explicitly.

No syllabus details we could not confirm

Paper structures and durations were revised for the current physics guide, so this page does not state them; your school's subject guide and IB coordinator are the authority. And no IB session or results date appears here, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Culture Village: your questions answered

What should I ask an IB physics tutor before hiring them?+

Two questions. How does a percentage uncertainty propagate through a quantity raised to a power, and how many marks does the evaluation criterion of the scientific investigation carry? The answers are that the percentage uncertainty is multiplied by the index, and that evaluation carries six of twenty-four marks. A tutor who teaches IB physics answers both immediately. A strong general physics tutor answers the first and hesitates on the second, which is exactly where the gap appears before a school deadline.

How much of the IB physics grade is the internal assessment worth?+

Twenty per cent, at both Higher and Standard Level, and it is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The detail that matters is that three of those four criteria concern how the investigation was built and interrogated rather than what the physics was. A student can understand the physics thoroughly and score poorly, which is the most common pattern we see from Culture Village families.

Why did my child's physics investigation score badly when the experiment worked?+

Almost always the evaluation criterion. It carries six of the twenty-four marks and students routinely give it a single paragraph. It wants specific strengths and weaknesses of the method, limitations explained in terms of their effect on the result, and realistic improvements. A modest experiment thoroughly evaluated outscores an impressive one barely discussed. The second most common cause is data analysis: raw data presented with correct physics and no uncertainty propagation at all.

What are the uncertainty rules a Diploma physics student must know?+

Five. Absolute uncertainty is the raw figure, usually half the smallest division or the stated instrument figure. Percentage uncertainty is the absolute divided by the measurement. For sums and differences, add the absolute uncertainties. For products and quotients, add the percentage uncertainties. For a power, multiply the percentage uncertainty by the index. Beyond those, gradient uncertainty is found by drawing maximum and minimum lines through the error bars and taking half the difference.

When should a physics tutor get involved with the investigation?+

Before any data is collected, because research design is the criterion that caps everything else. A research question too broad to answer with the available apparatus limits all twenty-four marks and cannot be repaired once data exists. One conversation at the question and design stage is worth more than a dozen sessions on a finished draft. The second useful point is first-draft feedback, criterion by criterion, which is still well before the school's submission deadline.

Can online physics tuition work when the subject involves laboratory work?+

For the components that carry the marks, yes, and the honest limit is worth stating. A tutor over video has no apparatus and cannot run an experiment with your child. The investigation is designed, carried out and written by the student in their school's laboratory under their teacher's supervision. A tutor contributes design critique, uncertainty treatment on the student's own data, graphing and analysis technique, and criterion feedback. Practical skills in the written papers are assessed on paper.

What is the difference between describe and explain in a physics question?+

Describe wants an account of what happens; explain wants a causal account of why. This is the largest avoidable loss in physics extended-response questions. Take the photoelectric effect: describing that electrons are emitted above a threshold frequency and that intensity affects current rather than energy is accurate and earns little. Explaining why it challenges the classical wave model requires stating the contradiction, that a wave model predicts sufficient intensity should eventually eject electrons at any frequency and it does not.

Why do free-body diagrams cost so many marks in mechanics?+

Because an incomplete diagram produces a wrong answer that no later step reveals. A missing normal force, or a reaction drawn as acting on the wrong body, propagates silently through the whole calculation. The fix is procedural rather than conceptual: draw every force, label the body each one acts on, and check that every force has a partner somewhere in the system. Students who apply that to every mechanics question usually stop losing mechanics marks within a few weeks.

Is Higher Level physics mainly harder because of the mathematics?+

Substantially, yes. Both levels cover the same five themes, and Higher Level adds content and depth within them, but the step that students feel is mathematical: rotational dynamics, the more developed treatment of fields, and extended quantum and nuclear content all assume manipulation comfort that a student arriving from IGCSE physics may not have. It is why Higher Level physics and Higher Level mathematics are so frequently requested together, and why a physics difficulty is often a mathematics difficulty.

Why does this page not state the physics paper durations?+

Because paper structures and durations were revised for the current physics guide, and a page restating an arrangement from a previous version would be confidently wrong. Your school holds the subject guide and the IB coordinator can confirm both the paper arrangement and the internal deadline for the investigation. A tutor quoting a structure from an earlier syllabus is a liability rather than an expert, and that is a fair thing to test in a free trial lesson.

Should an anomalous data point be removed to improve the trend?+

No, and it is worth telling a worried student that the honest route is also the higher-scoring one. Anomalies are evaluation material: a student who identifies an anomaly, considers why it occurred and discusses its effect on the conclusion is doing exactly what the evaluation criterion rewards. Data that looks suspiciously clean invites a different kind of scrutiny. A tutor must never supply data, adjust data, or suggest removing a point, and we state that before any investigation work begins.

What gap do students carry from IGCSE physics into the Diploma?+

Uncertainty treatment, most often. IGCSE physics touches measurement error lightly, while Diploma physics assesses uncertainty propagation across the written papers and places it at the centre of the investigation's data analysis criterion. A student entering Year 12 who has never added percentage uncertainties for a product is not behind on physics; they are missing a technique. It takes a handful of sessions rather than a term, and buying it early serves both the papers and the investigation.

Which schools near Culture Village run IB physics?+

No private school sits inside Culture Village itself. Swiss International Scientific School Dubai is next door in Al Jaddaf and runs IB programmes, making it the closest provision. Across the Creek, Universal American School Dubai and Deira International School sit in Dubai Festival City. South along Al Khail Road, North London Collegiate School Dubai and Hartland International School serve Sobha Hartland, with GEMS Modern Academy in Nad Al Sheba. Schools are named as market context only, with no affiliation implied.

Which physics work is worth putting in an early evening slot?+

Anything mathematical: mechanics calculations, field problems, uncertainty propagation and rotational dynamics at Higher Level. Those load working memory in the way a long school day degrades, and Culture Village's short runs to Al Jaddaf and Dubai Festival City often make a 16:30 start achievable. Data-based question reading practice and command-term work tolerate a later slot better. Investigation drafting and data analysis belong at a weekend, because both need an uninterrupted stretch.

Will you supply physics past papers and mark schemes?+

We work from them in sessions and link the official source, but we do not reproduce or supply them. IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade boundary tables are copyright works, and a provider advertising a library of them is offering something a legitimate operation would not. We show the student where the current document lives instead, which matters in physics because the subject guide was revised and a student who can find it can check what a tutor has claimed.

Ask about uncertainties and the evaluation criterion

If you are looking for an IB physics tutor in Culture Village, two questions separate a specialist from a strong generalist: how a percentage uncertainty propagates through a power, and how many marks the evaluation criterion carries. Then send us the level, the stage the investigation has reached and its school deadline, with two evening windows that work from Jaddaf Waterfront and any weekend morning you can offer. We will match a specialist, run one free trial lesson in the slot you intend to keep, and start with design critique if there is still time for it. Lessons are one-to-one and online on Gulf Standard Time.
