IB MYP Tutor in Pearl Jumeira

An IB MYP tutor in Pearl Jumeira is answering two completely different requests depending on the year group. In MYP 1 to 3 the useful work is organisation, research habits and learning how criterion marking behaves. In MYP 4 and 5 it is eAssessment technique, the Personal Project and the subject choices that shape the Diploma. This page separates them, and fits each into an afternoon that loses half an hour to the causeway. Teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Pearl Jumeira

Two programmes inside one programme

Parents on Pearl Jumeira asking about MYP tutoring are usually asking one of two unrelated questions, and the answer is different enough that mixing them wastes a term. The first question comes from families with a child in MYP 1, 2 or 3, where the report has criterion marks on it that nobody has explained and the student seems to be working hard without the grades moving. The second comes from families in MYP 4 or 5, where eAssessment, the Personal Project and Diploma subject choices have arrived together and the stakes have changed.

In the early years the honest answer is that most of what helps is not subject teaching. It is self-management: getting the task started, breaking it into stages, keeping a record of what was done, and submitting on time. It is research skill: finding a source, judging it, and citing it. And it is understanding how criterion marking behaves, which is the thing that makes MYP feel arbitrary to a student used to right-answer marking. A student in MYP 2 who is strong on content and scoring middling grades is almost never short of knowledge; they are short of a habit the programme happens to assess directly.

In MYP 4 and 5 the work changes shape. Content matters more, because the subject groups are deepening towards the Diploma. eAssessment, where a school enters for it, introduces on-screen examinations and ePortfolios and with them the first real experience of a timed external component. The Personal Project becomes the largest independent piece of work the student has produced. And the subject choices made in MYP 5 determine which Diploma routes stay open, which is a decision with a two-year consequence attached.

The timetable constraint is the same in both cases and it is tighter than for Diploma students, because MYP students are younger. Schools serving this island finish between about 2:45pm and 3:30pm. Pearl Jumeira is reclaimed land reached by one causeway, so the drive home means crossing Al Wasl Road and then joining a single queue onto the island, which takes thirty to forty-five minutes. Activity programmes run roughly 4pm to 6pm. For an eleven-year-old, a session after 7:30pm produces compliance rather than learning, and a shorter earlier session is worth more than a longer later one.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE, since in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. Pearl Jumeira families are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For MYP the practical benefit is specific: the published criterion descriptor and the student's own marked task can sit side by side on screen, which is how a thirteen-year-old comes to see the difference between a four and a six rather than being told about it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

MYP sits in the middle of a continuum, and the stage above and below both shape what tutoring should do. These are the three programmes involved.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

Eight subject groups across five years: language and literature, language acquisition, individuals and societies, sciences, mathematics, arts, physical and health education, and design. Four criteria per subject, each from zero to eight, converted to a grade from one to seven. Approaches to Learning, interdisciplinary units and service as action run alongside, and MYP 5 carries the Personal Project.

In Dubai MYP sits on top of a mandatory subject requirement. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are compulsory in all private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA requiring implementation by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, which means an island family is fitting any tutored hour onto an already full week.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme

What MYP 5 students in continuum schools move into. Six subjects, three at Higher Level, each with an internal assessment carrying a fixed percentage, plus Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. Terminal examinations return, which is the largest single change a continuum student experiences.

Dubai's 2026-27 intake adds three new International Baccalaureate schools among seven new private schools and 16,846 new places, so more island families will be making the MYP to Diploma transition each year. The subject choices made in MYP 5 are the hinge, since Higher Level entry in several subjects is conditioned on performance in the corresponding MYP subject group.

PYPAges 3-12

IB Primary Years Programme

The stage before MYP, inquiry-led and assessed on process rather than outcome. Students arriving in MYP 1 from PYP are used to inquiry and find the arrival of four named criteria with numerical marks the most disorienting change.

Families moving a child from a British-curriculum primary school into MYP 1 at a Jumeirah continuum school experience a different shock: a student accustomed to right-answer marking meets criterion C and discovers that presenting reasoning carries as much weight as reaching the answer. Two or three sessions in the first term usually settles it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

MYP tutoring concentrates on particular skills within particular years. These are the areas Pearl Jumeira families most often ask about, grouped by what each actually requires.

Self-management and task organisation

MYP 1-3 especially

Starting a task, breaking it into stages, keeping a record and submitting on time. Not a subject, and frequently the whole explanation for middling grades in a student who knows the content perfectly well. The highest-value early-years intervention available.

Research and information literacy

MYP 1-5

Finding a source, judging its reliability, extracting what is relevant and citing it properly. Assessed directly in the investigating criteria of several subject groups, and almost never taught explicitly in a timetable that is already full.

Critical thinking and transfer

MYP 3-5

Evaluating competing accounts, recognising perspective, and applying an idea from one subject in another. The individuals and societies thinking-critically criterion is where Dubai students most reliably lose marks, because school tasks reward research effort and the descriptor rewards judgement.

Mathematics across the four criteria

MYP 1-5

Knowing and understanding, investigating patterns, communicating, and applying mathematics in real-life contexts. Three of those four are not about getting the answer, which is why a mathematically able student can sit in the middle bands for years.

Sciences inquiring and designing

MYP 1-5

Writing a testable question, identifying variables and designing a method another person could follow. The direct ancestor of the Diploma scientific investigation, which makes it unusually worth investing in before MYP 5.

Sciences processing and evaluating

MYP 1-5

Presenting data, drawing a conclusion the data supports and evaluating the method honestly. Students overstate conclusions and list limitations without proposing improvements, both of which are correctable patterns rather than deficits.

Language and literature analysis and production

MYP 1-5

Explaining how a writer's choice creates an effect, then writing with deliberate structure and style. Improves faster than almost anything else when a student rewrites one paragraph with the band above visible.

eAssessment on-screen examination technique

MYP 5, where the school enters for it

Working to a clock on screen, reading unfamiliar stimulus material cold and writing to a mark allocation. The first external timed component most continuum students meet, and a bounded piece of preparation rather than a content problem.

ePortfolio components

MYP 5, where the school enters for it

Language acquisition, arts, design and physical and health education are assessed through portfolios rather than on-screen examinations. The work is the student's own throughout; a tutor can explain the criteria and respond to drafts only.

The Personal Project

MYP 5

Assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, each from zero to eight, with a process journal alongside the product. A tutor questions the goal and reads reflections; the student does every part of the work.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements cover MYP tutoring on this island, chosen by year group rather than by subject. All teaching is one-to-one over live video.

Early-years skills hour

For MYP 1 to 3, a single weekly session on self-management, research habits and how criterion marking behaves, using the student's own tasks as the material. Shorter than an hour where the student is young, and earlier rather than later in the afternoon.

  • Forty-five minutes is often the right length
  • Works from the student's own returned tasks
  • Descriptor for the band above kept visible
  • Aimed at a habit, not a syllabus

MYP 4 and 5 subject hour

A weekly hour in the subject group where the criterion marks are consistently low, with content teaching now carrying real weight because the subject groups are deepening towards the Diploma. For schools entering eAssessment, this becomes timed on-screen practice in the final year.

  • Subject content and criteria taught together
  • Timed practice where eAssessment applies
  • Mark allocation discipline taught explicitly
  • Same slot weekly in Gulf Standard Time

Personal Project and choices block

Three or four sessions in MYP 5 covering the Personal Project process and the Diploma subject decisions, which arrive in the same year. The project work is process coaching only, and the choices conversation is worked from evidence rather than from preference.

  • Goal questioned for whether it can be evidenced
  • Process journal treated as a record, not a reconstruction
  • Diploma subject options checked at source
  • Nothing written, drafted or supplied

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Pearl Jumeira

01

MYP 1 to 3 and MYP 4 to 5: two different purchases

The single most useful thing a Pearl Jumeira family can establish before booking anything is which of the two MYP problems they have. The table sets them side by side, because the right session, the right length, the right time of day and even the right band of the market differ between them.

In the early years the work is behavioural and it is cheap. A student who does not start a task until the evening before, who keeps no record of what they did, and who treats presenting their reasoning as optional, will receive middling criterion marks regardless of how well they understand the subject. Those are three specific habits. Each takes a few weeks of being required rather than reminded, and once they hold the tutoring can stop. Families who buy subject teaching for this problem are solving something the student did not have.

In MYP 4 and 5 content starts to matter in its own right, because the subject groups are deepening towards Diploma level and the gaps begin to compound. On top of that, three things arrive in the final year: eAssessment where the school enters for it, the Personal Project, and the subject choices that shape the Diploma. That is a genuinely busy year and it justifies a standing weekly booking in a way MYP 2 usually does not.

The practical implication for the island is about slot length as much as subject. An eleven-year-old at 4:45pm will do forty-five productive minutes on a research habit. A fifteen-year-old at 6:45pm will do a full hour on a science criterion with timed practice attached. Booking the second arrangement for the first problem is the commonest way money is wasted here, and it is avoidable with one honest conversation about what is actually going wrong.

02

Approaches to Learning: the skills the programme assesses directly

Approaches to Learning is the part of MYP most often described to parents in general terms and most useful when taken literally. There are five skill categories, and several of them map straight onto criteria that carry marks, which means they are not soft extras but assessed content.

Communication covers reading, writing, speaking and listening, and it is where the communicating criteria in mathematics and individuals and societies sit. Social skills cover collaboration, which matters in group tasks and interdisciplinary units. Self-management covers organisation, affective skills and reflection, which is the cluster that explains most underperformance in the early years. Research covers information literacy and media literacy, which the investigating criteria assess directly. Thinking covers critical thinking, creative thinking and transfer, which is what the thinking-critically criterion rewards.

The reason to name them precisely is that each one is teachable and each one is small. Information literacy, for instance, is a handful of specific moves: establishing who wrote a source and when, checking whether it is making a claim or reporting one, extracting what answers the question rather than what is interesting, and recording the reference at the moment of use rather than at the end. A student who has been taken through that four times does it. A student who has been told to research properly does not.

The table maps the categories onto where the marks appear. For a family on this island with one tutored hour available, it is the best available guide to which skill is worth that hour, because the answer is usually whichever one is being assessed across three subjects at once rather than whichever subject looks weakest.

CommunicationReading, writing, speaking, listeningCommunicating criteria across subject groups

ResearchInformation literacy and media literacyInvestigating criteria in several subject groups
ThinkingCritical thinking, creative thinking, transferThinking critically and real-life application criteria

03

eAssessment, where a school enters for it

  • Ask the school whether it enters MYP 5 students for eAssessment
  • On-screen examinations cover several subject groups plus interdisciplinary learning
  • ePortfolios cover language acquisition, arts, design and physical and health education
  • On-screen papers need timed practice, not content revision

Some continuum schools enter MYP 5 students for eAssessment, which leads to the IB MYP Certificate, and some do not. The first thing a family should establish is which, because it changes the final year substantially and because a tutor who assumes the wrong answer will prepare for the wrong thing.

Where it applies, the components split in two. Several subject groups, including language and literature, individuals and societies, mathematics, sciences and interdisciplinary learning, are assessed through on-screen examinations. Others, including language acquisition, arts, design, and physical and health education, are assessed through ePortfolios of the student's own work. The Personal Project is moderated alongside. Grades are reported on the same one to seven scale as internal MYP grades.

The on-screen examinations matter for tutoring because they are, for most continuum students, the first genuinely external timed component they have met. Five years of criterion marking on teacher-designed tasks, with drafting and feedback and often a second attempt, gives way to reading unfamiliar stimulus material cold, working to a clock, and producing a single attempt. That is not a content problem and it does not respond to content revision. It responds to timed practice, mark-allocation discipline and the habit of finishing.

The ePortfolio components are a different matter entirely, and the boundary has to be firm. The work in a portfolio is the student's own, built over time, and a tutor can explain what the criteria reward and give feedback on what the student has produced. A tutor cannot make, write, redraft or supply any part of it, and nobody here will. That is worth stating plainly, because a portfolio assembled over months is exactly the kind of component where outsourcing is quietly offered elsewhere in this market.

04

The Personal Project, and the two failures that happen in week one

The Personal Project in MYP 5 is assessed on planning, applying skills and reflecting, each from zero to eight, with a process journal kept alongside whatever the student produces. Almost everything that goes wrong with it goes wrong in the first fortnight, which is also when a family is least likely to be thinking about it.

The first failure is a goal that cannot be evidenced. A student chooses something broad and admirable, then reaches the end unable to show what specifically was achieved or which skills were applied to achieve it. The applying-skills criterion has nothing concrete to point at, and the planning criterion suffers retrospectively because the plan was never specific enough to assess. This is entirely preventable by being asked three or four awkward questions at the start: what exactly will exist at the end, how will anyone know you made it, and which skill did you not have before.

The second failure is a process journal written retrospectively. A journal reconstructed over a weekend from memory is visible to any experienced reader, and it makes the reflecting criterion very difficult to score well, because reflection is about what was noticed at the time. The fix is a weekly habit of three sentences rather than an eventual essay, and that is exactly the kind of thing a short recurring session is good at maintaining and a single long session cannot.

The boundary on help has to be stated and not softened. A tutor questions the goal, explains what each of the three criteria rewards, asks what went into the journal this week, and reads a reflection the student has written. A tutor does not write, draft, redraft or supply any part of the project, the report or the journal. Submitting work that is not the student's own is a malpractice risk that falls on the student, and at least one operator appearing in these searches sells completed assessed work outright, which should be read as a warning about the market rather than an option within it.

05

The mandatory UAE subjects sitting inside an MYP week

  • Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in Dubai private schools
  • Separate classes are required for Arabs and non-Arabs in the relevant subjects
  • Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, with at least 25 minutes advised
  • Additional or different content requires prior Ministry of Education permission

An MYP timetable in Dubai is fuller than eight subject groups suggests, and a family adding tutored hours should know what else is on it. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed international curriculum, and KHDA required these arrangements to be implemented by the start of the 2025-26 academic year, or April 2026 for schools whose year begins in April.

The requirements are specific rather than general. KHDA requires separate classes by group: for Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, schools must organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs, and combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because of the different curriculum expectations and language of instruction. Standard Arabic is required as the main language of instruction for Islamic Education for Arabs and for Arabic as a first language, with the school's licensed-curriculum language used for non-Arabs in Islamic Education and in Moral, Social and Cultural studies.

Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit, schools may vary lesson length provided the total weekly time is met, and KHDA advises that any mandatory subject lesson should run at least 25 minutes. Schools are also required to ensure that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects. And the use of different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is not permitted, which places a real limit on how any tutoring in those subjects can honestly be described: supporting a student with the school's own material is a different offer from supplying alternative content.

For a Pearl Jumeira family the conclusion is arithmetic rather than regulatory. Eight MYP subject groups, the mandatory subjects, an activity programme from four until six, and in MYP 5 the Personal Project, all inside a week that ends at 3:30pm with a causeway crossing attached. That is why this page recommends one targeted session rather than a package, and why for younger students it recommends forty-five minutes early rather than an hour late.

06

Subject choices in MYP 5 that shape the Diploma

The decisions made in MYP 5 are the part of the programme with the longest consequence, and they are frequently made on the basis of which subjects a student has enjoyed most, which is a reasonable input and a poor sole criterion.

The Diploma requires six subjects across the subject groups, three at Higher Level, and several Higher Level routes assume performance in the corresponding MYP subject group. Mathematics is the clearest case, because the Diploma splits into Analysis and Approaches and Applications and Interpretation and several competitive quantitative degree courses specify Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level. A student whose MYP strength was investigating patterns and real-life application may be better served by Applications and Interpretation, and that is a decision worth making deliberately rather than by default.

The sciences follow a similar logic. A student strong on the inquiring-and-designing criterion is well placed for the Diploma's scientific investigation, which is 20 per cent of a science grade. A student weaker on processing and evaluating will find that same component harder, and that is useful information a year in advance rather than a surprise in Year 12. Chemistry at Higher Level deserves separate thought, because medicine and dentistry pathways generally require it and it is among the tightest tutoring supply points in Dubai.

What a tutor can honestly contribute here is evidence and workload realism, not a recommendation dressed as a requirement. The evidence is the student's own criterion marks across five years, read as a pattern. The workload realism is what six Diploma subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and service actually looks like in a week that already loses an hour to the school run. The actual entry requirements belong to the universities, and they should be read on their own admissions pages before any subject form is signed.

07

Fitting an MYP session into the island afternoon

Age changes the timetable arithmetic, and most tutoring pages ignore it. A Diploma student can use a 7:30pm slot. An MYP 2 student frequently cannot, and buying an hour at that time produces agreement rather than learning.

The sequence here is fixed. Schools in the Jumeirah, Al Safa and Umm Suqeim cluster end between about 2:45pm and 3:30pm. The drive home means crossing Al Wasl Road or Jumeirah Beach Road and then joining the single causeway queue onto Pearl Jumeira, which takes thirty to forty-five minutes at that hour. Activity programmes occupy roughly 4pm to 6pm for most students. What remains for a younger student is an early window from about 4:45pm on activity-free days, and a short evening window from 6:30pm.

The practical recommendation for MYP 1 to 3 is an earlier, shorter session rather than a later, longer one. Forty-five focused minutes at 4:45pm will produce a rewritten paragraph or a properly structured plan. An hour at 7:45pm will produce a conversation in which the student agrees that the paragraph could be better. For MYP 4 and 5 a full hour works in either window, and in the final year a second session may be justified by the Personal Project and eAssessment arriving together.

One scheduling point applies across both groups. Activity programmes, school clubs and fixtures fill the calendar progressively through the year, and by January the available windows on this island have usually narrowed to after 6:30pm. Choosing the slot in September costs nothing and keeps the better one, which at this age is worth more than it would be for an older student.

08

What MYP support costs, and when it should stop

  • Published online rates AED 150-300; budget band AED 33-65 exists for recall and habit work
  • Premium bands are rarely justified at MYP level
  • Online rates do not vary with the causeway
  • Most early-years interventions should last a term, then stop

Published rates in this market, read in October 2026 and belonging to the providers named: in-home one-to-one tuition in Dubai at AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel included, with Bestimate's 2026 rate table putting the common range at AED 180 to AED 350. Online qualified subject tutors at AED 150 to AED 300, with Unitors listing IB rates from AED 200 and TutorChase AED 270 for specialist work. Budget online options from AED 33 to AED 52 at Tutopiya and AED 45 to AED 65 at EdFlik. None of these is an IB Gram price list.

For MYP the premium bands are harder to justify than at Diploma level, and that is worth saying rather than obscuring. The need in the early years is somebody who can read a criterion descriptor alongside a marked task and show a twelve-year-old what the band above requires. That is skilled work, it is not scarce work, and paying a travel premium for it on an island means paying for a causeway crossing rather than for expertise. In MYP 4 and 5, where subject content and eAssessment technique matter, the qualified subject band becomes the sensible place to be.

IB Gram does not offer home visits in Dubai or anywhere else in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. Pearl Jumeira families are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, which means the rate carries no travel and the descriptor and the student's own task can sit side by side on screen.

The last point is about stopping, which is the opposite of a sales argument and is the honest answer for most MYP families. An early-years intervention should last a term. Once a student starts tasks without being told, keeps a usable record, writes the reasoning without prompting, or proposes a specific improvement in an evaluation, the habit has formed and further paid hours buy reassurance rather than progress. In MYP 5 the hours are better redirected to the Personal Project process and the Diploma choices. No grade or criterion level can honestly be guaranteed, and anybody offering one has told you something about the rest of their claims.

Where we tutor

Pearl Jumeira and the communities on the same timetable

Session timing for younger students is shaped by school finishes and activity programmes, which are close to identical along the Jumeirah coast. These are the surrounding communities.

Pearl Jumeira

Villa plots on reclaimed land with one causeway. For an eleven-year-old the single exit queue is the difference between an early session and an evening one, which at this age is a real difference.

Jumeirah 1

The mainland district the causeway feeds into, with the shortest drives home in this group. MYP families here hold the early 4:45pm slot more easily than island households do.

LA Mer

The beachfront development immediately south, in the same school cluster, with identical finish times and the same activity windows between four and six.

Jumeirah 2

Established villas with a mix of continuum and British-curriculum families. Demand here peaks at report season, when criterion marks arrive and the pattern becomes visible to parents.

City Walk

Dense low-rise apartments across Al Wasl Road. For younger students the lift and basement waits at either end of a journey consume a meaningful share of a short usable evening.

Al Wasl

The through-corridor for this cluster's school traffic. Two crossings in an afternoon is most of what an MYP student has available, which is why the format matters more at this age than later.

Jumeirah 3

Towards Umm Suqeim, with longer internal drives. A 4:45pm session is only possible from this stretch because no travel happens at the tutor's end.

Umm Suqeim

Several large schools with staggered finishes and heavy afternoon traffic. MYP planning here starts from the activity calendar, since this age group cannot use a late evening slot.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Say which MYP year, first

MYP 1 to 3 and MYP 4 to 5 are different requests with different session lengths, different times of day and different market bands. Naming the year group before the subject prevents a family buying subject teaching for what is actually a self-management problem.

  2. 02

Send marked tasks rather than the report

Two or three returned tasks per subject with criterion marks written on them show which of four things is holding a grade down. Most families have this in a folder and have never read it as a pattern, and reading it is free.

  3. 03

    Take the free trial lesson

A full session at no charge, taught rather than pitched, with the student. The tutor reads a marked task against the published descriptor and starts working. One trial lesson per student, before any booking; if the match is wrong, say so and nothing is owed.

  4. 04

    Ask the school about eAssessment

Whether MYP 5 students are entered for on-screen examinations and ePortfolios changes the final year substantially. A tutor who assumes the wrong answer prepares for the wrong thing, and the school answers the question in one email.

  5. 05

Choose the slot for the age, not the convenience

For MYP 1 to 3 we recommend forty-five minutes at around 4:45pm over an hour after 7:30pm, and we will say when a requested time is too late to be worth paying for. The better window on this island is gone by January.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Two problems, told apart before anything is sold

Early-years MYP underperformance is usually self-management, research habits and criterion awareness. MYP 4 and 5 is content plus assessment technique. Selling the second arrangement for the first problem is the commonest waste in this part of the market.

Approaches to Learning taken literally

The five skill categories map onto criteria that carry marks, so they are assessed content rather than soft extras. Information literacy in particular is a handful of specific moves, and a student taken through them four times does them.

eAssessment treated as a timed-performance problem

On-screen examinations are the first external timed component most continuum students meet. Five years of drafting and feedback gives way to one attempt against a clock, and that responds to timed practice rather than to content revision.

Descriptors and work shown together

The fastest change in MYP comes from reading the band above aloud and rewriting one paragraph to meet it. Online delivery puts the descriptor and the student's own task in view at once, and the rewritten version is kept rather than lost.

Firm limits on the Personal Project and portfolios

A tutor questions the goal, explains the criteria and reads what the student has written. No part of a project, report, journal or ePortfolio is written, made, redrafted or supplied here, which matters most in exactly the components built over months.

An end point, named in advance

Most early-years MYP tutoring should last a term, and in MYP 5 the hours are better redirected than extended. No grade or criterion level is guaranteed, and the recommendation at the end of a term is sometimes to stop paying.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Pearl Jumeira: your questions answered

Does my MYP 2 child need a subject tutor or something else?+

Usually something else. In MYP 1 to 3 most underperformance is self-management and research habits rather than content: not starting until the evening before, keeping no record of what was done, treating the presentation of reasoning as optional. Those are three specific habits assessed directly through the criteria, and each takes a few weeks of being required rather than reminded. A student who knows the content and receives middling criterion marks is rarely short of knowledge.

How does MYP tutoring change between MYP 3 and MYP 4?+

Content starts to matter in its own right, because the subject groups are deepening towards Diploma level and gaps begin to compound. Session length moves from a productive forty-five minutes to a full hour. And in the final year three things arrive together: eAssessment where the school enters for it, the Personal Project, and the subject choices that shape the Diploma. That combination justifies a standing weekly booking in a way MYP 2 usually does not.

What are the Approaches to Learning skills, specifically?+

Five categories. Communication covers reading, writing, speaking and listening. Social covers collaboration. Self-management covers organisation, affective skills and reflection. Research covers information literacy and media literacy. Thinking covers critical thinking, creative thinking and transfer. Several map straight onto criteria that carry marks, which makes them assessed content rather than soft extras, and each is small enough to teach directly. That is why one hour on the weak category can lift grades in three subjects at once.

How do you actually teach research skill to an MYP student?+

As a sequence of specific moves rather than as advice. Establish who wrote the source and when. Check whether it is making a claim or reporting one. Extract what answers the question rather than what is interesting. Record the reference at the moment of use rather than at the end. A student taken through that four times with their own task in front of them does it thereafter. A student told to research properly does not, which is why the investigating criteria stay low.

Does my child's school enter MYP 5 students for eAssessment?+

Some continuum schools do and some do not, and it changes the final year substantially, so it is worth one email to the school. Where it applies, several subject groups including language and literature, individuals and societies, mathematics, sciences and interdisciplinary learning are assessed through on-screen examinations, while language acquisition, arts, design and physical and health education are assessed through ePortfolios. The Personal Project is moderated alongside, and grades are reported on the same one to seven scale.

Why are on-screen MYP examinations difficult for strong students?+

Because they are the first genuinely external timed component most continuum students have met. Five years of criterion marking on teacher-designed tasks, with drafting, feedback and often a second attempt, gives way to reading unfamiliar stimulus material cold, working to a clock and producing a single attempt. Content knowledge is rarely the issue. What is new is finishing, writing to the mark allocation rather than to the quality the student wants, and accepting one attempt.

Can a tutor work on an MYP ePortfolio with my child?+

Only on the criteria and on feedback. An ePortfolio is the student's own work, built over time, in language acquisition, arts, design or physical and health education. A tutor can explain what each criterion rewards and respond to what the student has produced. A tutor cannot make, write, redraft or supply any part of it, and nobody here will. That boundary matters most in exactly this kind of component, assembled over months, where outsourcing is quietly offered elsewhere in this market.

What goes wrong with the Personal Project in the first fortnight?+

Two things, and both are preventable. A goal so broad that nothing specific can be shown to have been achieved, which leaves the applying-skills criterion with nothing to point at and the planning criterion weak in retrospect. And a process journal that is not being kept, so it gets reconstructed from memory later, which any experienced reader can see and which makes the reflecting criterion very hard to score well. Three awkward questions at the start prevent both.

Which three questions should an MYP 5 student be asked about their project goal?+

What exactly will exist at the end of this. How will anyone be able to tell that you made it. And which skill did you not have before starting that you will have to acquire. A goal that survives those three is specific enough for the planning and applying-skills criteria to engage with. A goal that does not survive them will produce a project that feels successful to the student and scores poorly, which is the commonest and most avoidable disappointment in MYP 5.

How do the mandatory UAE subjects affect an MYP timetable?+

They add real load on top of eight subject groups. Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies are mandatory in all Dubai private schools regardless of the licensed curriculum, with KHDA requiring implementation by the start of the 2025-26 academic year. Instructional time is calculated on a 40-minute lesson unit and KHDA advises at least 25 minutes per mandatory lesson. Schools must also organise separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in the relevant subjects, which is a specific scheduling requirement.

Can we get tutoring in Arabic or Islamic Education alongside MYP?+

Support with the school's own material, yes, and with a limitation worth knowing. KHDA requires that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic in Dubai schools hold appropriate KHDA approval for those subjects, and for the mandatory subjects the use of different or additional content without prior Ministry of Education permission is not permitted. So helping a student with what the school is teaching is a different offer from supplying alternative material, and any provider describing it otherwise is overstating what can honestly be delivered.

How should MYP 5 subject choices for the Diploma be made?+

From the student's own criterion evidence across five years, plus the stated entry requirements of the courses they might plausibly apply for, read on the universities' own admissions pages. A student strong on investigating patterns is suited to abstraction and proof-style work; one strong on real-life application is often better served by Applications and Interpretation, which is a different course rather than an easier one. Workload realism matters too: six subjects plus the core is a full week.

What time should an MYP session run for a child on Pearl Jumeira?+

For MYP 1 to 3, around 4:45pm on an activity-free day, and forty-five minutes rather than an hour. School here ends between 2:45pm and 3:30pm and the Al Wasl Road crossing plus the causeway queue takes thirty to forty-five minutes, with activities to about 6pm. For MYP 4 and 5 a full hour works either early or from 6:45pm. For the younger years, forty-five focused minutes early beats an hour at 7:45pm, which produces agreement rather than learning.

How long should we keep paying for MYP tutoring?+

In the early years, a term. Once a student starts tasks without being told, keeps a usable record, writes the reasoning without prompting or proposes a specific improvement in an evaluation, the habit has formed and further hours buy reassurance rather than progress. In MYP 5 the hours are better redirected to the Personal Project process and the Diploma choices than extended. No grade or criterion level can honestly be guaranteed, and sometimes the right recommendation is to stop.

Name the year group, then the problem, then the slot

MYP tutoring goes wrong when a family buys subject teaching for a self-management problem, or an hour at 7:45pm for a twelve-year-old. So the order matters. Say which MYP year the student is in. Pull two or three marked tasks per subject out of the folder and read the criterion marks as a pattern rather than the grades. Ask the school whether MYP 5 students are entered for eAssessment. Then pick a slot that suits the age rather than the diary. Take the free trial lesson first; teaching is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
