IB Home Tutor in Discovery Gardens

Searching for an IB home tutor in Discovery Gardens usually means one thing: a Diploma grade is below where it should be and nobody has said why. The answer is rarely content. It is command terms, Internal Assessment criteria and past papers never marked against a real scheme. IB Gram matches a subject specialist and teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, so the syllabus work happens properly.

  • Sessions built around marked papers and the actual mark scheme
  • Command-term work in every subject, from the first session
  • Internal Assessment support on the student's own work only
  • One-to-one over live video; no tutor visits a UAE address

IB & IGCSE in Discovery Gardens

What is actually going wrong in the subject

Diploma grades slip for a small number of reasons and content ignorance is rarely the main one. The usual causes are specific: answering a command term with the wrong shape of response, treating an Internal Assessment as a writing task rather than a criteria-matching exercise, practising past papers without ever having one marked against the real scheme, and revising topics in isolation when the papers deliberately combine them. All four are diagnosable from one marked paper.

That is the premise of this page. Rather than describe tutoring in general, it sets out the assessment machinery of the Diploma: what each component actually rewards, which command terms require which structure, where Internal Assessment marks sit across the subject groups, and what proper past-paper work looks like as opposed to the version most students do alone. A parent who understands those can judge any tutor in about five minutes.

Discovery Gardens adds a practical dimension of its own. It is a high-density apartment community of 291 buildings laid out in themed districts, immediately north of Al Furjan and beside Ibn Battuta, with its own Route 2020 metro station. Almost nobody here has a spare study, which is why the common setup is a desk in a shared room with headphones. That works well for online sessions and poorly for a visiting tutor.

IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Every lesson is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time between 15:30 and 21:30; home visiting is a service we run only in India. The search phrase is still the right one to target because it is what parents type, but the honest answer belongs in the first screen rather than in a phone call three days later.

What online delivery buys a family here is specific to the problem this page describes. Proper syllabus work means a marked paper on screen, a mark scheme beside it, and both people looking at the same annotation. That is easier to do well over a shared screen than across a kitchen table, and it means the tutor is chosen for knowing the component rather than for living within a twenty-minute drive of Ibn Battuta.

One note on dates before the detail. UAE schools sit the Diploma in the May session. We do not publish specific IB exam or results dates anywhere on this site, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and an unverified date in front of a parent who acts on it is worse than none. Your child's Diploma coordinator holds the school's internal deadline calendar, which is the document to request in September. With six subjects carrying six internal components, those deadlines cluster rather than spreading evenly across the year, and knowing where the cluster falls is worth more than any single session bought after it.

At a glance

  • Command terms decide the shape of an answer, not just its content
  • Internal Assessments typically carry 20 to 30 per cent of a subject grade
  • Past-paper practice without marking builds familiarity, not marks
  • The papers combine topics, so topic-by-topic revision underperforms
  • Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay carry the bonus points
  • All lessons run online, one-to-one; no tutor visits a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Diploma is one programme with several distinct assessment machines inside it. These are the parts a Discovery Gardens family will need to understand.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme, the six subjects

Six subjects from different groups, usually three at Higher Level and three at Standard, each with external papers and an internally assessed component. The grade in each runs 1 to 7, and the Higher Level papers differ from Standard not only in content but in the length and structure of response expected. Command-term discipline is what separates students with similar knowledge.

Diploma students in Discovery Gardens travel out of the community for school, mostly to Dubai Investments Park, Al Barsha or Al Khail, so they are home from about 16:30 and book sessions at 18:00 or later. Six subjects in one household also means prioritising: the useful choice is the subject where marked papers show a pattern, not the one the student dislikes most.

IADiploma 1 into Diploma 2

Internal Assessment, every subject

Each subject carries an internally assessed component, typically worth 20 to 30 per cent of the grade and marked in school against published criteria before moderation. The forms differ: a scientific investigation, a mathematical exploration, economics commentaries, an individual oral, a research project. What they share is that criteria compliance matters more than polish.

This is where most Diploma marks are quietly lost in this community, because several deadlines land in the same weeks and students write to length rather than to criteria. One session per subject spent reading the criteria against a draft is worth more than three spent on content. Tutors give written feedback on the student's own work and write no part of any submission.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Theory of Knowledge comprises an exhibition commentary on three objects and an essay from prescribed titles. The Extended Essay is 4,000 words of supervised independent research in a chosen subject. Together they contribute the bonus points. Both are decided early: by the choice of objects and title, and by the research question respectively.

Families here most often ask for core support late, when the Extended Essay is half written on a question that cannot be answered in 4,000 words. One early session interrogating the question costs an hour and prevents that. A tutor questions the question and gives feedback on the student's own drafts; the tutor does not write, outline or rewrite any part.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme, before the Diploma

Assessed against four criteria out of eight in every subject group, with published descriptors. The habits built here, stating a method, processing data, documenting a process, evaluating honestly, are precisely what Diploma Internal Assessments assume. A student who arrives in Diploma 1 without them meets four unfamiliar demands at once.

Middle Years students in Discovery Gardens are home earlier than Diploma students, often by 16:00, so a 16:30 session fits. This is the cheapest point at which to build the criteria habits the Diploma will later assume, and it is the stage families in this community most often skip before arriving with a Diploma 2 problem.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What follows is what each commonly requested subject actually assesses, and where its marks are typically lost. This is the level of detail a tutor should be able to supply before you book anything.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Algebra, functions, calculus and proof, with one paper sat without a calculator and, at Higher Level, Paper 3 worth twenty per cent as an extended investigation. Marks go to method shown and to notation; a correct answer lifted from a calculator with no working forfeits most of a multi-step question.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Statistics, modelling and technology-led methods, with the graphic display calculator central. The specific trap is answering with a number where the question asks for interpretation in context: a gradient is not an answer until it is expressed as a rate of change in the units of the problem.

Physics

HL and SL

Five themes with Paper 1 split into multiple choice and a data-based section, Paper 2 carrying extended response, and a scientific investigation worth twenty per cent. Uncertainty propagation and reading gradients from a line of best fit cost more marks across a cohort than any single theme.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Built around structure and reactivity with a data booklet provided in the exam. Energetics sign conventions, mechanism notation and chemical tests answered as a list rather than as observation plus conclusion are the three reliable losses, and all three are notational rather than conceptual.

Biology

HL and SL

Organised around unity and diversity, form and function, interaction and continuity. The subject penalises imprecise language above all: naming a mechanism and a direction is required, and an answer stating that something increases earns nothing. Statistical treatment of data is reliably under-taught.

Economics

HL and SL

Microeconomics, macroeconomics and the global economy, with diagram-led extended response and three Internal Assessment commentaries on published news articles. Students draw a correct diagram and then never refer to it in the analysis, which forfeits the marks the diagram was meant to earn.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study papers using tools such as break-even, investment appraisal and Ansoff, plus a Higher Level research project requiring a real organisation and primary data. Arranging organisational access takes longer than writing the project, which is why late starts fail here.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Paper 1 unseen textual analysis, Paper 2 comparative essay, the Individual Oral linking a global issue to two texts, and at Higher Level a 1,200 to 1,500 word essay. Weak responses summarise the text; strong ones argue from how the text is constructed.

Language B: Arabic, French, Spanish

HL, SL and ab initio

Reading, writing, listening and an individual oral from a visual stimulus. Dubai private schools must teach Arabic to all pupils under KHDA rules, in separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students. The trainable gaps are vocabulary breadth and speaking for the full duration without prompting.

Psychology and Geography

HL and SL

Both reward command-term precision and studies or case material used as evidence rather than recited. In psychology the standard loss is describing a study without using it to support an argument; in geography it is case studies with no specific detail attached.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

A 1,600-word exhibition commentary on three objects and a 1,600-word essay from prescribed titles. Students fail by writing opinion essays. The marks go to the quality of the knowledge argument and to real, specific examples rather than general claims about science or history.

Extended Essay

Core

Four thousand words of supervised independent research in one subject. Failure is nearly always a research question too broad to answer in the word count, and the diagnosis takes one honest session months before the deadline rather than a rescue in the final term.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Syllabus work divides by what is being fixed. These are the patterns that suit a Diploma student in this community.

Weekly session with a marked paper

One sixty-minute session a week, always starting from work the school has marked. The point is continuity of evidence: a tutor who sees every returned paper can show you the pattern across a term rather than reacting to whichever topic felt hardest that week. This is the pattern that finds command-term problems.

  • Matched to subject and level, confirmed before the trial
  • Begins with the most recent marked work every time
  • Written note after each session naming what to practise
  • Patterns tracked across the term, not week by week

Past-paper block, marked properly

Two shorter sessions a week: a timed paper or section set in the first, marked feedback in the second, with errors grouped by cause rather than by question number. Unmarked past-paper practice builds familiarity and very little else, which is why students who do a great deal of it still plateau.

  • Timed conditions, then annotation against the real scheme
  • Errors grouped by command term, method and reading
  • Short gap so the set paper is actually completed
  • Defined block of weeks with an end date

Internal Assessment criteria block

Four to six sessions attached to one Internal Assessment, reading the criteria strand by strand against the student's own draft. In every subject group the available marks sit in criteria compliance rather than in writing quality, and that is the single most misunderstood fact about Diploma internal work.

  • Criteria read line by line against the student's draft
  • Research question or hypothesis questioned before work begins
  • Feedback in writing so the school can see the support
  • No drafting, rewriting or supplied content at any stage

Short core block for the Extended Essay or TOK

Three to five sessions on the Extended Essay question or the Theory of Knowledge title and objects. The earliest session is worth more than the rest combined, because a question that cannot be answered in 4,000 words produces a weak essay however well it is written.

  • Research question interrogated for scope and answerability
  • TOK objects and title checked for argument potential
  • Feedback on the student's own drafts only
  • Short, defined block rather than an open commitment

01

Command terms, and why they decide the grade

Every IB subject guide publishes a list of command terms and what each requires, and almost every Diploma student has read that list once and never used it. Yet it is the mechanism by which marks are awarded. A question beginning describe wants an account without reasons. Explain wants the reasons. Evaluate wants judgement supported by both sides. Compare wants similarities and differences. A knowledgeable answer in the wrong form earns a fraction of the marks available.

The reason this persists is that students are rarely marked on it. Classroom feedback often comments on content accuracy, and a student whose content is accurate concludes they are doing well. The paper then awards marks for a structure they never produced. Proper past-paper work, with annotation against the real scheme, exposes this in one session, which is why it is the first thing we look for in a marked paper.

The fix is mechanical and quick. Write an answer, mark it against the command, rewrite it once. Three cycles of that in a subject usually establishes the habit, after which the student reads a question and asks what shape is required before beginning. It is slower work for a tutor than talking through content, which is part of why many tutors avoid it and many students never meet it.

The table below sets out the common command terms and the typical error for each. It is worth printing and keeping beside past-paper work. Taken with the mark scheme for any paper your child has sat, it converts a vague sense of underperformance into a specific, fixable list.

02

Where the Internal Assessment marks sit in each subject

Every Diploma subject carries an internally assessed component, typically worth somewhere between twenty and thirty per cent of the grade, marked in school against published criteria and then moderated. Most families know this in the abstract and underestimate it in practice. A student with six subjects is carrying six internal components, and in aggregate that is a very large share of the final points total.

The forms differ considerably, which is why generic advice about internal work is useless. The sciences require a scientific investigation. Mathematics requires an exploration marked on five criteria including personal engagement and reflection. Economics requires three commentaries on published articles. Languages require oral components. Business Management at Higher Level requires a research project on a real organisation with primary data.

What they share is that criteria compliance beats polish. In every case the published criteria name specific behaviours, and the student who addresses each strand deliberately outscores the student who writes well in general. This is the most common and most expensive misunderstanding in Diploma internal work: students treat these as writing tasks and are marked on them as evidence-matching exercises.

The practical consequence for a Discovery Gardens family is a sequencing one. Six internal deadlines do not arrive evenly; they cluster, usually between the autumn of Diploma 2 and the following winter. Asking the coordinator for the school's internal deadline calendar in September, and planning around the cluster rather than discovering it, is worth more than any individual session.

03

Past-paper work done properly, and the version that does nothing

  • Timed, in one sitting, without notes, or it proves nothing
  • Marked strictly against the real scheme, not self-assessed
  • Errors grouped by cause: command term, method, reading, timing
  • Two causes targeted before the next paper, not nine topics

Almost every Diploma student does past papers and most get far less from them than they should. The version that does nothing is familiar: the student works through a paper with the answers beside them, checks off what they got right, and feels reassured. No timing, no marking against a scheme, no record of what kind of error occurred. That builds recognition of question types and very little else, which is why students who have done many papers still plateau.

The version that works has four parts. The paper is attempted under timed conditions, in one sitting, without notes. It is then marked against the actual mark scheme, line by line, with marks awarded strictly. The errors are categorised by cause rather than by topic: command term, method not shown, misreading, arithmetic, timing. Then one or two of those categories are targeted before the next paper.

The categorisation step is what makes it diagnostic. A student who loses nine marks across a paper usually has two causes, not nine problems. Six marks lost to command-term errors and three to timing is an entirely different plan from six lost to a topic and three to arithmetic. Students cannot usually do this categorisation for themselves because they see the question they got wrong rather than the behaviour that caused it.

This is also where online delivery is genuinely better rather than merely adequate. A marked paper, a mark scheme and both people annotating the same screen is a cleaner setup than two people leaning over one sheet of paper. In a Discovery Gardens apartment, where the study space is often a desk in a shared room, it is also the more practical arrangement by some distance.

04

Studying in a Discovery Gardens apartment

  • Over-ear headphones with a microphone solve the noise problem
  • The household agreement matters more than the equipment
  • Hosting a visiting tutor in a shared living space is a real imposition
  • All that is needed is a desk, headphones and the marked work to hand

Practical constraints shape outcomes more than most tutoring pages admit. Discovery Gardens is a high-density community of 291 buildings, predominantly studios and one and two bedroom apartments arranged in themed districts. A dedicated study is rare. Most Diploma students here work at a desk in a shared living space, or at the dining table, with family life continuing around them.

That has two consequences worth planning for. The first is noise, which is manageable: over-ear headphones with a microphone turn a shared room into a workable session space, and most families here already own them. The second is interruption, which needs a household agreement rather than equipment. A session that is treated as a timetabled lesson by everyone in the flat runs properly; one treated as homework does not.

It also makes a visiting tutor impractical in a way that has nothing to do with cost. Hosting an adult for an hour in a shared living space, in the evening, with other family members present, is a genuine imposition in a one or two bedroom apartment. Several families in this community cite that rather than price as the reason they stopped looking for someone to come to the home.

IB Gram does not visit homes anywhere in the UAE, so the question does not arise with us: every lesson is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time between 15:30 and 21:30, and home visiting is a service we offer only in India. What the setup needs at your end is modest: a desk, headphones, the marked work to hand, and an hour nobody walks into.

05

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, decided early

  • The Extended Essay question sets the ceiling, not the writing
  • If the student cannot state a likely answer, it is a topic not a question
  • TOK objects and titles differ in how much argument they allow
  • A tutor questions and gives written feedback; the student writes everything

The two core components carry the bonus points and both are decided by choices made long before the writing. For the Extended Essay it is the research question: four thousand words is a narrow space, and a question too broad to answer in it produces an essay that surveys rather than argues. Students usually realise this at the halfway point, by which time months of reading have been organised around the wrong frame.

Diagnosing it takes one honest session. The test is whether the question can be answered, with evidence, inside the word count, and whether the student can state what the answer is likely to be. If they cannot, the question is a topic rather than a question. Narrowing it in Diploma 1 costs an hour; rebuilding the essay in Diploma 2 costs several and still scores lower than a well-framed question would have.

Theory of Knowledge has a parallel structure. The exhibition requires three objects linked to a prompt, and the essay requires a title chosen from prescribed options. In both cases the choice determines the ceiling, because some objects and some titles simply offer more room for a knowledge argument than others. Students who choose on interest alone frequently find they have nothing to argue by the third paragraph.

What a tutor can legitimately contribute here is questioning and feedback. Reading the criteria with the student, interrogating the question or the title, supplying real examples from their own subjects, and giving written feedback on the student's own drafts. What a tutor must never do is write, outline for completion, or supply content. At least one provider in this market sells completed essays; the malpractice exposure from that falls on the student.

06

Mark-scheme traps by subject group

Each subject group has characteristic ways of losing marks that have nothing to do with understanding, and a tutor who knows the group can name them before seeing any work. In mathematics it is method not shown and loose notation: equals signs used as connectives, missing differentials, limits omitted from integrals, calculator answers presented bare. These feel unfair to students because the mathematics was correct, and they are among the fastest things to fix.

In the sciences it is uncertainty and graph handling, plus describing where explanation was required. Gradients read from plotted points rather than from a line of best fit, units misplaced, significant figures chosen by habit rather than justified by the uncertainty. In chemistry specifically, sign conventions in energetics and mechanism notation account for a large share of the gap between understanding and score.

In the humanities and social sciences it is evidence used as decoration. A psychology answer that describes a study without using it to support the argument, an economics answer with a correct diagram never referred to in the prose, a geography case study with no specific detail attached. The content is present and the marks are not, because the scheme awards the use of evidence rather than its presence.

In languages and literature it is summary in place of analysis. Paper 1 unseen analysis rewards explaining how a text creates its effect; students describe what the text says. The Individual Oral rewards a genuine global issue; students bring a theme. These are structural habits, and three marked attempts with rewriting usually changes them for good.

MARK-SCHEME TRAPS BY SUBJECT GROUP

07

Why topic-by-topic revision underperforms on IB papers

  • IB papers combine topics deliberately, so topic revision underprepares
  • Revise the recurring ideas, then practise composite questions
  • Build the plan from marked papers, not from a syllabus checklist
  • Teach content where the evidence shows a real gap, not by default

Most Diploma students revise by topic because that is how the syllabus is printed and how the school taught it. The papers do not work that way. A physics question uses wave behaviour inside a fields context; a biology question needs statistics applied to an ecology scenario; an economics question requires a microeconomic diagram inside a macroeconomic argument. Students who revised the topics separately recognise the content and cannot assemble it.

What works better is revising the recurring ideas that cross topics, then practising whole questions that combine them. In the sciences those recurring ideas are energy, proportionality, graphical relationships and uncertainty. In mathematics they are function behaviour, rates of change and proof structure. In the humanities they are the command terms and the use of evidence. None of them belongs to a single unit.

The practical method is to work from marked papers rather than a syllabus checklist. A checklist produces coverage, which feels productive and tells you nothing about whether the student can answer a composite question. A marked paper shows exactly where assembly failed, and that is the information a revision plan should be built from. This is the difference between a plan and a timetable.

There is an exception worth stating. Where a marked paper shows genuine content gaps in a specific area, teach that area. The argument is not against content teaching but against content teaching as a default when the evidence points elsewhere, which is the commonest reason a term of tutoring produces no grade movement despite everyone working hard.

08

Delivery, limits, and what we will not do

  • No tutor visits a UAE address and there is no UAE office
  • Scarcer Higher Level subjects take longer to match, especially in January
  • Internal Assessment support is teaching and written feedback only
  • No reproduced board material, no accreditation claims, no grade guarantees

IB Gram delivers one-to-one online across Discovery Gardens and the whole UAE. No tutor attends a UAE address; home visiting is a service we offer only in India. There is no IB Gram office, centre or branch in the UAE. Those are limits rather than selling points, and stating them before a parent spends time on an enquiry is the only reasonable way to handle a page that targets a home-tutor search phrase.

On availability, the honest position is that Mathematics and the three sciences at Standard Level and Middle Years are usually matched within a few days, while Arabic B, Design Technology, Music and the smaller Higher Level options take longer. In January and February, when every Diploma 2 family in Dubai wants the same evening slots, everything takes longer. If we cannot cover a subject and slot, we say so rather than substituting a tutor one level below the student.

On internal work the boundary is fixed. Tutors read criteria with the student, question a research question or hypothesis, teach the technique the work requires, model how published work is structured, and give written feedback on the student's own drafts. Tutors do not write, rewrite, outline for completion, or supply content. Feedback is given in writing so a school asking what support was received gets an answer that holds up.

On materials and claims: we do not reproduce or distribute IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, and we cite and link official sources instead. We hold no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from the IB, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or the Ministry of Education, and claim none. We do not guarantee grades, and we do not describe tutors as examiners without evidence of current status.

Where we tutor

Discovery Gardens and the communities beside it

Discovery Gardens sits in the Jebel Ali and Dubai South corridor. These are the neighbouring communities sharing its school routes and its evening timings.

Discovery Gardens

A high-density apartment community of 291 buildings in themed districts, with its own Route 2020 metro station and Ibn Battuta next door. Study space rather than travel is the constraint, which shapes how sessions are set up here.

Al Furjan

Villas and townhouses immediately south, sharing many of the same school buses. The contrast is instructive: Al Furjan families worry about bus loops, Discovery Gardens families about a quiet corner.

Dubai Investments Park

Holds several of the schools Discovery Gardens children attend, including IB continuum provision, so some students here have a short run and the earliest workable session in the corridor.

Jebel Ali

Established schools south along the corridor with long-settled families. Free zone working hours mean many households want a 19:00 slot with a parent home towards the end of it.

The Gardens

The low-rise community adjoining Discovery Gardens, sharing the same metro access and school routes. Demand here mirrors Discovery Gardens closely, with the same apartment study-space pattern.

Dubai Production City

Townhouses and apartments north-east along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, closer to the Al Barsha school corridor where several Diploma schools sit.

Dubai South and Emaar South

The newest districts near the Expo site, with thin local school provision and the longest bus runs. Diploma students here are home latest and book the 19:00 slots.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send a marked paper and name the component

Not the subject in general, but the paper or criterion where marks are going. Add the level and the earliest time your child is at the desk after school. Diploma students in Discovery Gardens travel out of the community, so 18:00 is the common starting point on a weekday.

  2. 02

We match a subject specialist and name them

You are told who will teach, at which level, and which components they have taught or marked, before any session. If the exact level cannot be matched we say so rather than offering someone a level below and letting the gap appear in week six.

  3. 03

Free trial built on the marked work

Bring the paper and ask what pattern connects the lost marks. A specialist answers at component level: command-term errors in extended response, uncertainty omitted throughout, a diagram never referenced in the prose. No payment is taken and there is no obligation afterwards.

  4. 04

Set up the session space once

A desk, over-ear headphones with a microphone, the marked work to hand, and an hour the household treats as a timetabled lesson. In a shared Discovery Gardens apartment that agreement matters more than the equipment, and it takes one conversation at the start.

  5. 05

Work from papers, categorised by cause

Timed papers, marked strictly against the real scheme, with errors grouped by command term, method, reading and timing rather than by topic. Two causes targeted before the next paper. This is what turns past-paper practice from familiarity into marks.

  6. 06

Get the internal deadline calendar in September

Six subjects means six internal components, and they cluster rather than spreading evenly. The coordinator holds the school's internal deadline calendar. Planning around the cluster, with criteria sessions scheduled before each draft, protects more marks than anything available later.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Command terms treated as the main event

A knowledgeable answer in the wrong form earns a fraction of the available marks, and most students are never marked on it. We look for that pattern in the first marked paper, because it is the fastest grade movement available in several subjects.

Internal Assessment as criteria matching

Internal components typically carry twenty to thirty per cent of a subject grade, and the marks go to criteria compliance rather than to writing quality. Students treat them as writing tasks. Reading the criteria against the draft is where the recoverable marks are.

Past papers marked, not just attempted

Unmarked practice builds recognition and little else. We run papers under timing, mark them strictly against the real scheme, and group the errors by cause, because nine lost marks usually come from two causes rather than nine problems.

Online suits the work and the apartment

A marked paper, a mark scheme and shared annotation on one screen is a better setup than two people over one sheet. In a Discovery Gardens apartment it is also far more practical than hosting a visiting tutor in a shared living space.

Specialists, not the nearest available tutor

Delivering online means the tutor is chosen for knowing the component rather than for living near Ibn Battuta. For Higher Level subjects in this corridor, where local supply is thin, that is the difference between a specialist and a near miss.

Limits and boundaries stated upfront

No home visits in the UAE, no UAE office, no written coursework, no reproduced mark schemes, no accreditation claims and no grade guarantees. Knowing the limits before you pay is worth more than a page implying there are none.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Discovery Gardens: your questions answered

Will an IB tutor come to our apartment in Discovery Gardens?+

Not from IB Gram. Every UAE lesson is one-to-one over live video; home visiting is a service we run only in India. In a community of mostly one and two bedroom apartments that is often the preferred arrangement anyway, since hosting an adult for an hour in a shared living space in the evening is a real imposition. Several families here cite that rather than cost as the reason they stopped looking for a visiting tutor. What the online setup needs is a desk, headphones and the marked work to hand.

My child knows the content. Why is the mark still low?+

They are the instruction words at the start of every IB question, and the subject guides publish what each requires. Describe wants an account without reasons; explain wants the reasons; evaluate wants a judgement weighing both sides; compare and contrast wants similarities and differences together. A knowledgeable answer in the wrong form earns a fraction of the available marks. Most students have read the list once and are never marked on it, which is why it is the fastest grade movement available in several subjects.

How much of an IB subject grade comes from internal work?+

Typically twenty to thirty per cent, depending on the subject, marked in school against published criteria and then moderated. With six subjects a student is carrying six internal components, which in aggregate is a very large share of the final points total. The forms differ: a scientific investigation, a mathematical exploration, economics commentaries, oral components, a business research project. What they share is that criteria compliance matters more than polished writing.

Why does my child plateau despite doing lots of past papers?+

Because the papers are almost certainly not being marked. The common version is working through a paper with answers beside it, checking what was right, and feeling reassured, which builds recognition of question types and little else. The version that works is timed, in one sitting, without notes, then marked strictly against the real scheme, with errors grouped by cause: command term, method not shown, misreading, arithmetic, timing. Nine lost marks usually come from two causes, not nine topics.

Can a tutor help with an Internal Assessment in any subject?+

Within a fixed boundary, yes, and it is where most recoverable marks are. A tutor may read the published criteria with the student strand by strand, question a research question or hypothesis until it works, teach the technique the component requires, show how published work is structured, and give written feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor may not write, rewrite, outline for completion or supply content. Feedback is given in writing, so a school asking what help was received gets a clear answer.

What time can Diploma sessions run for a student living in Discovery Gardens?+

Usually 18:00 or later on weekdays. Diploma students here travel out of the community for school, mostly to Dubai Investments Park, Al Barsha or Al Khail, so they are home from about 16:30 and often later with a Creativity, Activity, Service commitment or a fixture. Middle Years students are home earlier, often by 16:00, which makes a 16:30 start workable for them. Sessions run to 21:30 Gulf Standard Time, and a missed one moves to the next evening rather than the next week.

How do I know whether my child's Extended Essay question will work?+

Ask them to state, in one sentence, what the answer is likely to be. If they cannot, it is a topic rather than a question, and four thousand words will produce a survey instead of an argument. Narrowing it in Diploma 1 costs about an hour; rebuilding an essay in Diploma 2 costs several sessions and still scores below a well-framed question. Students usually discover the problem at the halfway point, after months of reading has been organised around the wrong frame.

Why does topic-by-topic revision not work well for IB papers?+

Because the papers combine topics deliberately. A physics question uses wave behaviour inside a fields context, a biology question applies statistics to an ecology scenario, an economics question needs a microeconomic diagram inside a macroeconomic argument. A student who revised topics separately recognises all the content and cannot assemble it. Better to revise the recurring ideas that cross topics, energy, proportionality, graphs, command terms, evidence use, then practise whole composite questions and mark them.

What does a good first session look like with a new IB tutor?+

It starts with your child's marked work, not with a syllabus overview or a diagnostic quiz. Within twenty minutes the tutor should be naming a pattern: extended responses describing rather than explaining, method not shown in multi-step work, a diagram never referenced in the analysis, uncertainty omitted throughout. By the end there should be a stated number of sessions and a specific first target. A first session spent on introductions and a general plan has told you nothing.

Which subjects are hardest to find a Diploma specialist for in this corridor?+

Arabic B at Diploma level, Design Technology, Music and the smaller Higher Level options. Mathematics and the three sciences at Standard Level and Middle Years are usually matched within a few days. Availability tightens sharply in January and February, when every Diploma 2 household in Dubai is looking for the same Higher Level specialists in the same evening window. If we cannot cover your subject and slot we will say so rather than offering a tutor one level below your child.

How should a student revise in a shared apartment with family around?+

With over-ear headphones and a household agreement, in that order of cost and reverse order of importance. The equipment solves noise and most families here already own it. The agreement solves interruption, which equipment cannot: a session treated as a timetabled lesson by everyone in the flat runs properly, and one treated as homework does not. Discovery Gardens is predominantly studios and one or two bedroom apartments, so this is the normal setup rather than a compromise.

Does Theory of Knowledge really affect the final points?+

Yes. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay together contribute the bonus points, and both are decided by early choices. For Theory of Knowledge that means the three objects for the exhibition and the title chosen from the prescribed list, because some objects and titles simply allow more room for a knowledge argument than others. Students who choose on interest alone often find they have nothing left to argue by the third paragraph, and by then the choice is made.

My child's teacher says the content is fine. What else could be wrong?+

Almost certainly the form of the answers. The classic pattern is accurate content assembled in the wrong structure: describing when the command asked for explanation, presenting evidence without using it to support an argument, drawing a correct economics diagram and never referring to it in the prose. Teachers often comment on accuracy, so a student with accurate content concludes they are doing well. The paper then awards marks for a structure they never produced. One marked paper exposes it.

Are IB exam dates published on this site?+

No. UAE schools sit the Diploma in the May session and we write about that session, but we publish no specific IB exam or results dates, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and an unverified date in front of a parent who acts on it is worse than no date. Your child's Diploma coordinator holds the school's internal deadline calendar, including the Internal Assessment and Extended Essay deadlines, and that is the document worth requesting in September.

Can you supply past papers and mark schemes for us to work through?+

No, and nor should any tutor. We do not reproduce or distribute IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; we cite and link official sources and work from what the school has issued to the student. Reproducing published board material is a copyright matter, and for unreleased material it is a malpractice exposure for the student. Ask the school what it can release, since most will provide papers relevant to the student's own entry.

Which single change moves an IB grade fastest?+

Having papers marked against the real scheme and the errors grouped by cause. It sounds procedural rather than transformative, and it is the step almost no student takes alone. It reveals whether the problem is command terms, method not shown, misreading, timing or genuine content gaps, and those need four different plans. Everything else on this page follows from knowing which of the five you are dealing with, which is why the free trial is built around a marked paper.

Send one marked paper and we will tell you what is wrong

If you are looking for an IB home tutor in Discovery Gardens, the useful first step is a marked paper rather than a conversation. Send the subject, the level, the component where marks are going and the earliest time your child is at the desk. We will match a subject specialist, name them before the lesson, and run a free trial reading the paper against the mark scheme so you can hear exactly where the marks went. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time between 15:30 and 21:30. No tutor attends a UAE address, and nothing is paid until you have judged the match.
