IB Physics Tutor in Discovery Gardens

An IB physics tutor in Discovery Gardens is worth paying for when they work on the shape of the answer, not the breadth of the syllabus. Most lost physics marks come from explanations that describe instead of naming a principle, uncertainty left untreated, and gradients read from points. IB Gram matches by level and teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Extended response marked against the command term used
  • Uncertainty and graph rules taught explicitly, not assumed

IB & IGCSE in Discovery Gardens

Physics marks are lost in the shape of the answer

The physics student who understands the subject and scores below their understanding is the most common case in Diploma tutoring, and the diagnosis is almost always the same three things. Extended responses that describe what happens without naming the principle that causes it. Uncertainty left untreated because nobody taught it as a set of rules. And gradients read from two plotted points rather than from a line of best fit, which is a single habit costing marks in every data question.

None of those is a content gap, and none is fixed by covering more syllabus. That matters because the default response to a disappointing physics grade is to revise the themes again, which produces a student who knows more physics and scores the same. A tutor working from a marked paper rather than from the student's sense of which topics feel hard will see this in the first session.

This page is written at the level of the answer rather than the level of the syllabus. It sets out the anatomy of a Paper 2 extended response, the uncertainty rules as rules with examples, how to linearise a relationship so a gradient means something, why the multiple-choice section is a separate skill, and what the investigation's analysis and evaluation criteria actually reward.

Discovery Gardens affects the logistics. It is a high-density apartment community of 291 buildings in themed districts beside Ibn Battuta, with its own Route 2020 metro station. Diploma students travel out for school, mostly to Dubai Investments Park, Al Barsha or Al Khail, so they are home from about 16:30 and physics sessions run at 18:00 or later. Study space is typically a desk in a shared room rather than a study, which is a constraint worth planning for rather than apologising about.

That setup works for physics provided the session is built around shared written working and shared annotation, which is how we run them. IB Gram delivers one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time between 15:30 and 21:30, and no tutor attends a UAE address; home visiting is a service we offer only in India. What the arrangement needs at your end is a desk, headphones, paper for sketching and the marked work to hand.

On dates: UAE schools sit the Diploma in the May session, and we publish no specific IB exam or results dates anywhere, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking and an unverified date a parent might act on is worse than none. Your child's Diploma coordinator holds the internal calendar, including the investigation deadline, which is the document worth asking for in September. The investigation deadline in particular arrives earlier than most families expect, and twenty per cent of the grade depends on data collected well before it.

At a glance

  • Explanations must name the principle, not describe the effect
  • Uncertainty propagation is a set of rules and is rarely taught as one
  • Gradients come from the line of best fit, never from plotted points
  • Paper 1 splits into multiple choice and a data-based section
  • The Scientific Investigation is twenty per cent, capped at 3,000 words
  • All lessons run online, one-to-one, with the level confirmed first
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Physics demands change at each stage and the handovers are where confidence breaks. These are the stages a Discovery Gardens family passes through.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme sciences

Assessed on four criteria out of eight, with processing and evaluating data the strand that most consistently costs marks. The physics content is light relative to Diploma demands, so the preparation that matters is the processing habits the Diploma assumes: plotting properly, reading gradients from a line, stating uncertainty, naming control variables.

Middle Years students in Discovery Gardens are home earlier, often by 16:00, so a 16:30 session places easily. The work that pays off here is not more physics but the data skills, because those are examined in every Diploma component and the Diploma itself has no time to teach them from scratch.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Physics

Five themes covering motion, the particulate nature of matter, wave behaviour, fields, and nuclear and quantum physics, with Higher Level deepening the same themes rather than adding separate ones. Assessment is Paper 1, split into multiple choice and a data-based section, Paper 2 with short and extended response, and the Scientific Investigation at twenty per cent.

Diploma students from this community are home from about 16:30 after travelling out for school, so physics sessions run at 18:00 or later. Higher Level Physics is one of the scarcer specialisms in this corridor, which is why matching on level rather than on subject is the thing to insist on before booking.

IADiploma 1 into Diploma 2

The Scientific Investigation

One independent investigation of up to three thousand words, assessed on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, and worth twenty per cent of the grade at both levels. The analysis and evaluation criteria are where most students lose the available marks, and both depend on the uncertainty and graph work described on this page.

The practical sequence matters more than the writing. A question whose measurement is impossible with school equipment produces data too scattered to support a conclusion, and that cannot be fixed later. Tutors question the design, teach the treatment the data needs, and give written feedback on the student's own drafts. Nothing is written by the tutor.

BRIDGESummer after Year 11

From IGCSE Physics into the Diploma

IGCSE Physics builds recall and single-step calculation. The Diploma expects rearrangement under pressure, uncertainty propagation, logarithmic treatment of data and extended written explanation built from a named principle. The gap is mathematical and structural rather than conceptual, which is why targeted work closes it quickly.

Families in this corridor usually change schools for the Diploma, since full provision nearby is thinner than further north. Four to six summer sessions on rearrangement, graphs, uncertainty and explanation structure removes one of the three unfamiliar things a student would otherwise meet in a single term.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Physics shares demands with several other subjects and families here often need more than one covered. These are the components and neighbours we are asked about most.

Physics HL

Higher Level

The five themes at greater depth, with the added demand being sustained quantitative reasoning and longer explanations rather than extra topics. Paper 2 extended responses reward an answer built from a named principle, and students who describe what happens score consistently below their understanding.

Physics SL

Standard Level

The same themes with reduced depth, the same Scientific Investigation at twenty per cent, and identical data and uncertainty demands. Families under-buy here on the assumption that Standard Level is light, and most Standard Level marks are lost in the data section and the investigation.

Paper 2 extended response

SL and HL

Carries the larger share of the written marks and is where command terms decide outcomes. Explain, describe, outline, discuss and compare each require a different structure, and a well-informed answer to the wrong command earns little regardless of its accuracy.

Paper 1B: data-based questions

SL and HL

A written practical examination: instrument reading, data processing, plotting, gradient and intercept interpretation, and uncertainty handling. Students revise themes and leave this to chance, which makes it the most recoverable set of marks available in the subject.

Paper 1A: multiple choice

SL and HL

Rewards recognition and speed and punishes a student who works every question algebraically. The skill is elimination and estimation under timing, which is practised by doing timed sets rather than by learning more content.

Uncertainty and error analysis

SL and HL

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation rules through addition, multiplication and powers, significant figures justified by the uncertainty, and uncertainty bars used to judge whether a relationship is supported. Rule-based and quickly taught.

Graph and gradient work

SL and HL

Linearising a relationship so a gradient has meaning, choosing axes accordingly, reading a gradient from a line of best fit, and interpreting an intercept physically. Taught properly in two sessions and worth marks in every component including the investigation.

The Scientific Investigation

SL and HL

Twenty per cent of the grade on four criteria. Analysis and evaluation carry the marks most often left on the table: processed data with propagated uncertainty, and a critical assessment of the method rather than a list of apologies about equipment.

Mathematics for Physics

Supporting both levels

Rearrangement, indices, standard form, logarithms, small-angle approximations and trigonometry. Where a student explains the physics well and stalls on the algebra, the right purchase is mathematics support rather than more physics teaching.

Chemistry alongside Physics

HL and SL

Shares the investigation structure and the same uncertainty and graphing demands, so families often arrange both. Where one tutor genuinely covers both to the level needed that is efficient, and where they do not, two specialists outperform one generalist.

Extended Essay in Physics

Core

Four thousand words of supervised independent research. Physics essays fail on feasibility rather than ambition: a question needing equipment the student cannot access becomes a literature review. One early session on the question prevents that.

Theory of Knowledge and the natural sciences

Core

Students taking Higher Level Physics are frequently asked to write about scientific knowledge, and generic claims about the scientific method score poorly. A physics tutor's useful contribution is supplying real examples from the course that can carry an argument.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Physics support divides by what is being fixed rather than by how much time is bought. These are the patterns that work here.

Weekly session with standing data work

One sixty-minute session a week on the current theme, with ten minutes of uncertainty or graph work every time regardless of topic. The standing element is deliberate: those skills are examined in every component and in the investigation, and a student who meets them only at investigation time meets them too late.

  • Matched to Higher or Standard Level, confirmed before the trial
  • Built on the school's own set work and marked assessments
  • Uncertainty or graph practice in every single session
  • Written note after each lesson naming what to practise

Extended response writing block

Three to five sessions writing Paper 2 answers, having them marked against the command term used, and rewriting once. It is slower work than discussing content, which is why many tutors avoid it, and it is the intervention that most reliably converts physics understanding into physics marks.

  • Answers written, marked and rewritten once
  • Marked against the command term, not for general accuracy
  • Structure taught explicitly: principle, mechanism, consequence
  • Defined block with an end date

Data and uncertainty block

Four sessions on the data-based section and the uncertainty rules, which together reach Paper 1B, Paper 2 and the investigation's analysis criterion. The best value per session in the subject, because the skills are rule-based and recur everywhere rather than belonging to one theme.

  • Propagation rules taught as rules with worked examples
  • Linearising, axes choice, gradients and intercepts
  • Significant figures justified by the uncertainty
  • Benefits the investigation as well as the papers

Investigation block, design first

Four to six sessions attached to the Scientific Investigation, beginning with the research question and the measurement plan rather than the write-up. The tutor reads the four criteria with the student, questions feasibility, teaches the treatment the data needs, and gives written feedback on the student's own drafts.

  • Feasibility questioned before any data is collected
  • Criteria read strand by strand against the draft
  • Feedback in writing so the school can see the support
  • No drafting, data processing or supplied analysis

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Discovery Gardens

01

The anatomy of a Paper 2 extended response

Ask a physics student why they lost marks on an extended response and they will usually say they did not know enough. Read the answer and the physics is frequently all present, arranged in a way the mark scheme cannot credit. Extended responses are marked for a sequence: the principle that applies, the mechanism by which it produces the effect, and the consequence in the terms the question asked about. Students write the consequence and assume the rest.

That is why command terms matter so much here. Describe asks for an account without reasons, and a student who adds reasons spends time for no additional credit. Explain asks for the reasons, and an answer describing the effect has not explained anything. Discuss asks for a balanced treatment. Compare asks for similarities and differences together rather than two separate descriptions. The physics can be identical in each and the mark very different.

The teachable version is a structure rather than a style. Name the principle or law. State the relationship, in symbols if useful. Say what changes and in which direction. Then answer the question that was asked, in its own terms. A student who writes in that order produces answers that mark schemes credit, and the order becomes automatic after perhaps six marked attempts.

This is slow work for a tutor, which is worth knowing as a buyer. Writing answers, marking them strictly and rewriting one is less comfortable for everyone than talking through a topic, and it is the thing that moves a physics grade. If a prospective tutor describes their sessions entirely in terms of covering content, they are describing something other than this.

02

Uncertainty as a set of rules, not a topic

Uncertainty is treated in most classrooms as a short unit near the start of the course and then assumed. In the examinations and in the investigation it is permanent. It appears in the data-based section of Paper 1, in Paper 2 questions about experimental results, and it carries a substantial share of the investigation's analysis and evaluation marks. No individual theme has that reach.

The reason students struggle is that it is usually taught as a concept when it behaves as a set of rules. Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty are definitions. Propagation has rules: add absolute uncertainties when quantities are added or subtracted, add fractional or percentage uncertainties when they are multiplied or divided, and multiply the fractional uncertainty by the power when a quantity is raised to a power. Those are learnable in one session with examples.

Significant figures follow from the uncertainty rather than from habit. A result cannot honestly carry more precision than its uncertainty allows, and students who round to three figures because three looks right are guessing. Stating the uncertainty and then matching the precision to it is a two-step habit that examiners reward and that costs nothing once established.

The final piece is uncertainty bars on graphs, used to judge whether a proposed relationship is actually supported by the data. A line that passes within the bars supports the relationship; one that does not, does not, however appealing the hypothesis. That reasoning is exactly what the investigation's conclusion and evaluation criteria ask for, which is why four sessions on uncertainty reach both the papers and twenty per cent of the grade.

Graph work: making a gradient mean something

  • Decide what the gradient should represent before choosing axes
  • Linearise so the gradient carries the constant of interest
  • Read gradients from widely spaced points on the line of best fit
  • Ask what the intercept means physically, every time

A physics graph exists to turn a relationship into a straight line whose gradient is a physical quantity. Students who learn graph plotting as a presentation exercise miss that entirely, and then cannot explain what their gradient represents. The first question to ask of any plot is what the gradient will be, in physical terms, and whether the axes chosen make it that thing.

Linearising is the technique and it is routinely under-taught. Where a relationship is not linear in the measured quantities, plotting a function of one against the other produces a straight line whose gradient carries the constant of interest. Choosing what to plot is therefore a physics decision rather than a drawing decision, and a student who can make it has an approach to every unfamiliar data question.

Then there is the single most common graph error across every science: reading a gradient from two plotted data points rather than from the line of best fit. The line exists precisely because individual points carry uncertainty, and using two of them discards the averaging the line provides. One session establishes the habit of taking widely spaced points on the line, and it earns marks in physics, chemistry and biology alike.

Intercepts deserve the same treatment. An intercept is a physical quantity, not a leftover number, and questions frequently ask what it represents. Students who have only ever been asked to plot neatly have no answer. Asking what both the gradient and the intercept mean, every time a graph is drawn, is a free habit that converts plotting practice into physics understanding.

04

The themes as recurring ideas rather than units

  • Five themes, with Higher Level adding depth rather than topics
  • Examination questions deliberately cross theme boundaries
  • Drill the recurring threads: energy, proportionality, graphs, uncertainty
  • Teach a theme where marked evidence shows a real content gap

The current syllabus is organised into five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level deepens the same themes rather than adding separate content. A tutor should be able to name all five without checking, and one working from an older guide will instead describe additional higher-level topics, which is the wrong shape for this course.

The more useful observation is that the examination does not respect theme boundaries. Energy appears in all five. Field concepts recur. Proportionality and graphical relationships run throughout. A question will use wave behaviour inside a fields context or thermal reasoning inside a nuclear one, and a student who revised each theme as a sealed unit recognises every piece of content and cannot assemble the answer.

So the revision that works is organised around the recurring ideas, with whole composite questions used as the practice. Energy transfer and conservation, proportional reasoning, graphical interpretation, and uncertainty treatment are the four threads worth drilling across themes. Each one appears in every paper and none belongs to a single unit, which is why a theme-by-theme plan systematically underprepares.

There is an exception and it should be said. Where a marked paper shows a genuine content gap in a specific theme, teach that theme. The argument here is against theme-by-theme revision as the default response to a disappointing grade, not against content teaching where the evidence calls for it. The distinction matters because the default costs a term and is almost never questioned.

05

The multiple-choice section is its own skill

  • Elimination and estimation beat full algebraic working under time
  • Limiting cases and dimensional reasoning narrow many questions to two options
  • Careless losses fall with a fixed read-and-eliminate procedure
  • Practise in timed sets; pacing cannot be developed untimed

Paper 1 splits into a multiple-choice section and a data-based section, and the multiple-choice part is where strong students most often lose marks they cannot explain. The reason is strategic rather than academic: a student who works every question through algebraically runs out of time, and a student who rushes misreads. Neither problem is addressed by knowing more physics.

The skills that help are elimination, estimation and recognition. Many questions can be narrowed to two options by dimensional reasoning or by a limiting case, without any full calculation. Others are faster to check by substituting a convenient value than by rearranging. A student who practises timed sets with explicit attention to these techniques improves measurably in a handful of sessions.

Careless losses are the other half. On multiple choice a misread sign, a missed prefix or an answer transferred to the wrong line costs as much as not knowing the physics. Those errors reduce when a student has a fixed procedure: read the question twice, note what is asked, eliminate, then answer. Dull as it sounds, it is the difference between two scores on identical knowledge.

The practical consequence for a Discovery Gardens family is that multiple-choice preparation should be timed and separate. Mixing it into general revision does not develop the pacing, because pacing only exists under time pressure. Two or three sessions of timed sets, discussed afterwards in terms of why each question was slow rather than why it was wrong, usually does the job.

06

Analysis and evaluation in the Scientific Investigation

The Scientific Investigation is twenty per cent of the Physics grade, reported in up to three thousand words, assessed on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Design is where feasibility is decided, and the two criteria where students most often leave marks unclaimed are analysis and evaluation, both of which depend entirely on the uncertainty and graph work described earlier on this page.

Analysis asks for raw data processed properly, uncertainty propagated through the processing, and a graph that answers the research question with a gradient or relationship extracted from it. What students submit is frequently a neat table of raw readings, a plot without uncertainty bars, and a stated result with no indication of its precision. The physics may be sound and the criterion is about treatment.

Evaluation is the one students misread most completely. It is read as a confession, so it becomes a list of complaints about imprecise equipment. What it asks for is a critical assessment: which limitations materially affected the result, in which direction, and what specific improvement would address each. A limitation named without its effect is not an evaluation, and that reframing is worth several marks for one session's work.

Conclusion sits between them and has its own trap: restating the results rather than answering the research question and comparing the finding with accepted physics. A conclusion should say what the answer is, how confident the data allows one to be, and how it compares with the published value or expected relationship. All three are explicit expectations and all three are frequently absent.

What a physics session needs in a Discovery Gardens flat

  • A desk, headphones, paper for sketching and the marked work
  • Sharing a hand-drawn diagram quickly matters more than software
  • Interruption, not equipment, is the real constraint in a flat
  • A missed session moves to the next evening rather than the next week

Physics is slightly more demanding than mathematics to run well online, because a session involves diagrams, graphs and written explanations rather than working alone. It is still entirely workable, and the requirements are modest: a desk, over-ear headphones with a microphone, paper for sketching, and the marked work to hand. Being able to photograph or share a hand-drawn diagram quickly matters more than any specialised software.

In a community of mostly one and two bedroom apartments, the harder constraint is interruption rather than equipment. A physics explanation takes a sustained few minutes, and a session broken every ten minutes does not recover its thread any better than a Paper 3 question does. The answer is a household agreement reached once, treating the hour as a timetabled lesson rather than homework.

This is also where hosting a visiting tutor becomes impractical for reasons unrelated to cost. Inviting an adult into a shared living space for an hour in the evening, with family present and nowhere else to be, is a real imposition in a flat. Families here raise that more often than price when explaining why they stopped looking for someone to come to the home.

IB Gram visits no UAE addresses, so the question does not arise: every lesson is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time between 15:30 and 21:30, and home visiting is a service we offer only in India. The practical benefit in a physics context is that a session missed to a late bus or a fixture can move to the next evening rather than the next week, which matters in a subject where topics build on each other.

08

Availability, honesty and what we will not do

  • Higher Level physics is scarcer here; we say so rather than substituting
  • Level gaps appear first in extended response marking and uncertainty work
  • Investigation support is questioning, teaching and written feedback only
  • No reproduced board material, no accreditation claims, no grade guarantees

Higher Level Physics is one of the scarcer specialisms in this corridor, and that is worth stating rather than implying a bottomless roster. Physics at both levels is reasonably well covered across the UAE set and usually matched within a few days, with availability tightening in January and February when every Diploma 2 family in Dubai is after the same evening slots. Where we cannot cover a request, we say so rather than offering a Standard Level tutor for Higher Level work.

That substitution is the specific thing to guard against in this subject, because the gap shows up in exactly the places this page has described: marking extended responses against command terms, and teaching uncertainty propagation as rules. A tutor comfortable to Standard Level will teach the content adequately and the assessment poorly, and a family usually notices in week six rather than week one.

On the investigation the boundary is fixed and stated at the first session. A tutor may read the four criteria with the student, question the research question and the measurement plan, teach the uncertainty and graphical techniques the data requires, show how published work structures an analysis, and give written feedback on the student's own drafts. A tutor may not write the report, process the data, supply the analysis or outline it for completion.

On materials and claims: we do not reproduce or distribute IB syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables, and we cite and link official sources instead. We hold no approval, accreditation or partnership from the IB, KHDA, ADEK, SPEA or the Ministry of Education. We do not guarantee grades, and we do not describe tutors as IB examiners without evidence of current status, since examiner status confers no access to marking or paper content.

Where we tutor

Discovery Gardens and the corridor around it

These communities share Discovery Gardens' school routes and evening timings, and the same thin local supply of Diploma physics specialists.

Discovery Gardens

An apartment community of 291 buildings in themed districts with its own Route 2020 metro station. Physics sessions work from a shared desk provided the student can write and share the page on screen.

Al Furjan

Villas and townhouses immediately south on shared bus routes, drawing on exactly the same citywide pool of Higher Level physics specialists as this community.

The Gardens

The adjoining low-rise community with the same metro access, school routes and 18:00 session pattern during the Diploma years.

Dubai Investments Park

Holds several schools from this corridor including IB continuum provision, so students on these routes are home earliest and have the longest usable evening.

Established schools further south, where free zone working hours push many households to a 19:00 slot that local alternatives rarely serve.

Dubai Production City

Townhouses and apartments along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, closer to the Al Barsha corridor where several full Diploma schools sit.

Dubai South and Emaar South

The newest districts with the longest bus runs, so Diploma students here are home latest and demand for Higher Level physics outpaces anything local.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the level and a marked Paper 2

Physics Higher or Standard, Diploma 1 or 2, and a marked extended response rather than a description of the problem. Add the earliest time your child is at the desk; students here travel out for school and are usually home from about 16:30.

  2. 02

We match by level and name the tutor

You are told who will teach, whether they work to the current five-theme syllabus, and whether they have marked Scientific Investigations. If Higher Level cannot be matched we say so rather than offering a Standard Level tutor and letting the gap surface later.

  3. 03

Free trial on the marked response

The tutor should be able to show you, on your child's own answer, which part of the structure was missing: the principle, the mechanism, the direction, or the answer in context. That is a specific diagnosis. A general comment about needing more revision is not.

  4. 04

Set the standing data work in week one

Ten minutes of uncertainty or graph work in every session from the start, regardless of the theme being covered. Those skills reach Paper 1B, Paper 2 and the investigation's analysis criterion, and a student who meets them only at investigation time meets them too late.

  5. 05

Write, mark and rewrite extended responses

Three to five answers written, marked against the command term used, and rewritten once. Uncomfortable for everyone and the intervention that most reliably converts physics understanding into physics marks. Expect a tutor to propose it rather than avoid it.

  6. 06

Put the investigation design session early

Before the research question is fixed, spend an hour on what will be measured, with what precision, over what range and with how many repeats. Twenty per cent of the grade depends on data that cannot be recollected once the term has moved on.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Answers marked, not topics covered

Most physics marks are lost in the shape of the answer: a described effect instead of a named principle. We write, mark and rewrite extended responses, which is slower than discussing content and is what moves the grade.

Uncertainty taught as rules

Propagation, significant figures and uncertainty bars are rule-based and learnable in a session with worked examples. Taught as a concept and then assumed, which is the classroom norm, they cost marks in every component and in the investigation.

Gradients from the line, not the points

The single most common graph error in every science. One session establishes the habit of taking widely spaced points on the line of best fit, and it earns marks in physics, chemistry and biology at once.

The data section treated as a written practical

Paper 1B examines instrument reading, processing, plotting and uncertainty rather than theme knowledge. It is the most recoverable set of marks in the subject and the part students leave to chance while revising content.

Twenty per cent protected on time

The investigation's mark is set by the research question and the data, both fixed long before the writing. We put the design session early, because feasibility cannot be fixed once scattered data exists.

Honest about level and availability

Higher Level physics is scarcer in this corridor. If we cannot match the level we say so rather than substituting, because a Standard Level tutor stretched upwards teaches the content adequately and the assessment poorly.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Discovery Gardens: your questions answered

Why does my child lose physics marks on answers that contain the right physics?+

Because extended responses are marked for a sequence and students write only the end of it. The marked structure is the principle that applies, the relationship between the quantities, the mechanism by which one change produces another, the direction of that change with its reason, and then the answer in the question's own terms. Most students assert the outcome and assume the rest is understood. Six marked and rewritten answers usually fixes it, and the gain applies to every paper afterwards.

How should uncertainty propagation be taught?+

As rules with worked examples, not as a concept. Add absolute uncertainties when quantities are added or subtracted. Add fractional or percentage uncertainties when they are multiplied or divided. Multiply the fractional uncertainty by the power when a quantity is raised to a power. Then match the significant figures of a result to what the uncertainty allows rather than rounding to three by habit. That is one session of teaching, and it reaches Paper 1B, Paper 2 and the investigation.

What is the single most common graph mistake in IB Physics?+

Reading a gradient from two plotted data points instead of from the line of best fit. The line exists precisely because individual points carry uncertainty, so using two of them discards the averaging it provides. One session establishes the habit of taking widely spaced points on the line, and it earns marks in physics, chemistry and biology alike. The related habit worth building is asking what both the gradient and the intercept represent physically, every time a graph is drawn.

What does linearising a relationship actually mean?+

Plotting a function of one measured quantity against another so that the result is a straight line whose gradient carries the physical constant you want. Where a relationship is not linear in the raw quantities, choosing what to plot is a physics decision rather than a drawing decision. A student who can make that decision has an approach to every unfamiliar data question, which is why it is worth a session even though it appears in no single theme.

Why do strong students lose marks on the multiple-choice section?+

For strategic reasons rather than academic ones. A student who works every question through algebraically runs out of time, and one who rushes misreads signs and prefixes. The techniques that help are elimination, estimation, limiting cases and dimensional reasoning, which narrow many questions to two options without a full calculation. These only develop under timing, so preparation has to be timed sets discussed afterwards in terms of why a question was slow rather than only why it was wrong.

What does the investigation's Evaluation criterion want?+

A critical assessment, not a confession. It asks which limitations materially affected the result, in which direction, and what specific improvement would address each one. What students write instead is a list of complaints about imprecise equipment, which identifies problems without analysing their effect or proposing a real fix. A limitation named without its consequence is not an evaluation. Reframing it from apology to critique is worth several marks and takes about one session to explain.

What should the Conclusion section of a physics investigation contain?+

Three things: what the answer to the research question is, how confident the data allows one to be, and how the finding compares with accepted physics or a published value. Students commonly restate their results instead, which is a different task and scores poorly. The confidence element depends directly on the uncertainty work, which is why uncertainty is not a separate topic but the backbone of both the analysis and conclusion criteria.

How is IB Physics organised, and why does that matter when hiring?+

Into five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics, with Higher Level deepening the same themes rather than adding separate ones. It matters because a tutor working from an older guide will describe additional higher-level topics, which is the wrong shape for this course and makes their revision planning unreliable. Ask them to name the five themes and say what Higher Level adds.

Why does theme-by-theme revision underprepare a student?+

Because examination questions deliberately cross theme boundaries. A question will use wave behaviour inside a fields context or thermal reasoning inside a nuclear one, and a student who revised each theme as a sealed unit recognises all the content and cannot assemble the answer. Better to drill the four recurring threads, energy transfer and conservation, proportional reasoning, graphical interpretation and uncertainty treatment, then practise whole composite questions and mark them.

Is my child's difficulty physics or mathematics?+

One session with a marked paper will tell you. If they explain what is happening physically and then stall on rearranging the relationship, the problem is mathematical: indices, standard form, logarithms, small-angle work and algebra under time pressure are routine demands in this course. If the algebra is fluent and the explanations are vague, the problem is structural, in the shape of the answer. Treating a mathematical difficulty with more physics teaching is common and expensive.

Can physics really be taught well over video from an apartment?+

Yes, with a modest setup: a desk, over-ear headphones with a microphone, paper for sketching, and the marked work to hand. Being able to share a hand-drawn diagram quickly matters more than any specialised software. The harder constraint in a flat is interruption, because a physics explanation needs a sustained few minutes, and the answer to that is a household agreement that the hour is a timetabled lesson rather than homework.

What time do physics sessions run for Diploma students here?+

Usually 18:00, and 19:00 on a day with a fixture or a Creativity, Activity, Service commitment. Students in this community travel out for school, mostly to Dubai Investments Park, Al Barsha or Al Khail, and are home from about 16:30. Middle Years students are often home by 16:00, so 16:30 works for them. Sessions run to 21:30 Gulf Standard Time, and a missed one moves to the next evening rather than the next week, which matters in a subject that builds.

Is Standard Level physics worth paying to support?+

Often yes, and families routinely under-buy on the assumption that it is light. The Scientific Investigation is the same twenty per cent at Standard Level with the same four criteria and the same three thousand word limit, and the data-based section of Paper 1 makes identical demands. Most Standard Level marks are lost in exactly those two places rather than in advanced content, so the support that helps is the same support described throughout this page.

Would a Standard Level tutor cope with Higher Level physics?+

They will teach the content adequately and the assessment poorly, and the gap shows up within about two sessions. Specifically it appears in marking extended responses against command terms and in teaching uncertainty propagation as rules, both of which require having done them to this assessment before. Higher Level Physics is one of the scarcer specialisms in this corridor, so this substitution is common. Ask directly whether a tutor has taught and marked at Higher Level.

Can a tutor process my child's investigation data if the method was sound?+

No. A tutor may teach the processing and uncertainty techniques the data requires, explain what each criterion rewards, question whether the processing answers the research question, and give written feedback on the student's own draft. A tutor may not process the data, supply the analysis, write or rewrite the report, or outline it for completion. That is stated at the first session of any investigation block, and feedback is given in writing so the school can see its nature.

On a small budget, which physics skill has the widest reach across the papers?+

Uncertainty rules and graph work, in that order. Those skills are examined in the data-based section, reappear in Paper 2 questions about experimental results, and carry a substantial share of the investigation's analysis and evaluation marks, so their reach is wider than any single theme. They are also rule-based rather than conceptual, which means four sessions is genuinely enough to establish them, and the gain applies for the remainder of the course.

Send a marked extended response and the level

An IB physics tutor in Discovery Gardens earns their fee by working on the shape of the answer and the treatment of the data. Send the level, a marked Paper 2 response, and the earliest time your child is at the desk. We will match a tutor working to the current five-theme syllabus, confirm whether they have marked Scientific Investigations, and run a free trial showing you on your child's own answer which part of the structure was missing. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time between 15:30 and 21:30, and need a desk, headphones and paper for sketching.
