IB & IGCSE in Jumeirah Village Circle

The three comparisons that decide what chemistry tuition should do

Families in Jumeirah Village Circle usually begin by comparing communities — here against JVT, Al Barsha South, Motor City — and that comparison does not resolve, because IB chemistry teachers are scarce across the whole emirate and live wherever they happen to live. The International Baccalaureate is about 7 per cent of Dubai private-school enrolment, a fraction of that cohort takes chemistry, and a fraction of those take it at Higher Level. Four neighbouring communities are drawing from the same small pool by accident of where individuals rent.

The comparisons that do resolve are three, and all of them are about the course rather than the postcode. The first is the step from IGCSE to the Diploma, which is larger in chemistry than in any other science and is usually described to parents as more content when it is actually a change in kind: qualitative treatment becomes quantitative, and descriptive answers become mechanistic ones.

The second is Higher Level against Standard Level. In chemistry the Higher Level extensions sit inside each syllabus area rather than as separate options — transition metals and complex ions, hybridisation and formal charge, entropy and Gibbs energy, rate laws and pKa calculation, and the full mechanism treatment — and the mathematical load rises with them. The two levels are not the same course at different speeds.

The third is IB chemistry against A Level chemistry, which matters because several schools in this cluster offer A Level rather than the Diploma, so it is a live question for a family weighing a move. The two differ in breadth, in how practical work is assessed, and in whether the subject sits inside a six-subject diploma with core components.

There is a fourth comparison, smaller but immediately useful, and it concerns what to buy first. Almost every chemistry enquiry we receive is about organic chemistry, because organic looks hardest on the page. A marked script frequently shows something else failing underneath it: mole calculations that are not reliable under time pressure. Fixing those takes four or five sessions and improves energetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry and every titration analysis at once, whereas starting with organic leaves the foundation untouched and the same marks lost in three other places.

A fifth is the investigation design itself, which in chemistry has a larger effect on the achievable mark than in the other sciences. A titration design, a calorimetry design and a rate-of-reaction design have genuinely different ceilings and genuinely different risks, and the choice between them is made before any data exists. Three sessions spent on that decision is worth considerably more than ten spent rescuing a finished report built on a question that could never have shown a relationship.

IB Gram teaches Jumeirah Village Circle students one-to-one over live video at a fixed weekly time in Gulf Standard Time, matched by level. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; in-person home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Confirm every criterion and structure below against your school's subject guide, since science guides are periodically revised and your child's cohort version is the only one that counts.

  • Lessons are live one-to-one video; no tutor visits a UAE address
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Chemistry reaches a Jumeirah Village Circle student along three possible routes, and the comparison between them is the most useful thing a parent can understand before buying anything.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Chemistry

Organised in two halves. Structure covers models of the particulate nature of matter, models of bonding and structure, and the classification of matter. Reactivity covers what drives chemical reactions, how much and how fast and how far they go, and what the mechanisms of chemical change are. Higher Level extends within each area. Assessment combines two written papers with an internally assessed investigation worth a fifth of the grade.

UAE schools sit the May session. We publish no IB examination or results dates here, because ibo.org blocks automated verification; take yours from your school's IB coordinator. What governs planning locally is the school's investigation deadline and laboratory timetable, both set at campus level and genuinely different across the schools this cluster uses.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

The IGCSE route into it

Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1, taken by most students in this cluster who later start Diploma chemistry. It covers bonding, stoichiometry, acids and bases, organic families and qualitative analysis, largely descriptively. The Diploma rebuilds organic chemistry from the beginning, so the part of IGCSE that genuinely carries forward is the quantitative work rather than the organic content.

Families around Jumeirah Village Circle usually revise the wrong half when preparing for the Diploma. The organic material will be retaught; the moles and concentration work will be assumed. Four sessions on stoichiometry in the summer before Year 12 removes a disproportionate share of the Year 13 repair work we are later asked for.

A LEVELAges 16-19, the alternative route

The A Level chemistry comparison

Relevant because several campuses in this cluster run A Level rather than the Diploma. A Level chemistry is narrower and deeper, with practical skills assessed through a separate endorsement rather than a graded internal investigation, and it sits as one of three or four subjects rather than inside a six-subject diploma with Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay.

For a Jumeirah Village Circle family weighing a school move, this is the comparison worth making rather than the commute. Tutor supply for A Level chemistry in Dubai is a separate and somewhat deeper pool, because the UK curriculum accounts for 37 per cent of private enrolment against the IB's 7 per cent.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Chemistry divides into parts that behave very differently, and the step up from IGCSE is unequal across them. These are the ones Jumeirah Village Circle families ask for.

Stoichiometry and the mole

SL and HL

Moles, concentration, limiting reagents, percentage yield and gas calculations. Load-bearing: weakness here reappears in energetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry and every titration analysis. Four or five sessions and the highest-value block in the subject at any level.

Atomic structure and periodicity

SL and HL

Electron configuration, ionisation energy trends and periodic behaviour, extended at Higher Level into transition metals and complex ions. Students lose marks explaining trends by size alone where the scheme wants nuclear charge and shielding named together.

Bonding and structure

SL and HL

Ionic, covalent and metallic bonding, molecular shapes and intermolecular forces, with hybridisation and formal charge at Higher Level. The characteristic error is vocabulary: bond-strength language used where the question is about intermolecular forces, which forfeits the mark entirely.

Energetics and thermochemistry

SL and HL

Enthalpy changes, Hess's law and bond enthalpies, extended at Higher Level into entropy and Gibbs energy. This is where the IGCSE-to-Diploma change in kind is clearest: qualitative exothermic and endothermic becomes quantitative calculation with sign conventions.

Kinetics

SL and HL

Collision theory and rate factors at Standard Level, extended at Higher Level into rate expressions, orders of reaction and the rate-determining step. Higher Level kinetics is the area most commonly underestimated, because it looks like Standard Level content with numbers attached and is not.

Equilibrium

SL and HL

Dynamic equilibrium and Le Chatelier reasoning, extended at Higher Level into the equilibrium constant and quantitative treatment. Le Chatelier answers lose marks by stating a direction of shift without naming the change that caused it.

Acids, bases and buffers

SL and HL

pH, strong and weak behaviour and titration curves, extended at Higher Level into pKa calculation and buffers. Buffer calculations are the single most commonly muddled Higher Level item and efficient to tutor, because the procedure is fixed once understood.

Redox and electrochemistry

SL and HL

Oxidation states, cells and electrolysis, extended at Higher Level into electrode potentials and quantitative electrolysis. The IGCSE treatment is descriptive, so this area is a genuine step up rather than a revisit.

Organic chemistry and mechanisms

SL and HL

Functional groups and pathways at Standard Level, with nucleophilic substitution, electrophilic addition and the drawing conventions at Higher Level. Mechanism marks depend on the conventions — arrows from electron density, intermediates with charges shown — not only on the product.

Spectroscopy and structure determination

SL and HL

Mass spectrometry, infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance data interpreted together to deduce a structure. Entirely dependent on fluent use of the data booklet provided in the examination, and one of the most teachable areas once the procedure is made explicit.

Data analysis and uncertainties

SL and HL

Processing titration and calorimetry data, propagating uncertainty and judging whether a conclusion is supported. Assessed in its own right and taught unevenly, which makes two or three dedicated sessions one of the better returns in the course.

The scientific investigation

SL and HL, 20 per cent of the grade

A student-designed investigation marked out of 24 across four criteria. In chemistry the choice between a titration, calorimetry, rate or spectroscopic design has a large effect on the achievable mark, and that choice is made before any data exists.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of chemistry support, chosen from what a marked script shows rather than from which part of the course sounds hardest.

Stoichiometry foundation block

Four or five sessions on moles, concentration, limiting reagents and yield under timed conditions. Unglamorous, almost never requested, and the most effective purchase in the subject, because weakness here reappears in energetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry and every titration analysis the student will meet.

  • Calculation practice under time pressure, not worked examples
  • Equations read as ratios rather than as sentences
  • Unit and significant-figure discipline built in from the start
  • Ends when the calculations are reliable, usually in five sessions

Higher Level extension block

Six to eight sessions on the specific areas where Higher Level extends: transition metals and complex ions, entropy and Gibbs energy, rate expressions and orders, pKa and buffers, and the full mechanism treatment. The right purchase for a student who was comfortable at IGCSE and is now finding the Diploma unexpectedly steep.

  • Targets the extension areas rather than revisiting core content
  • Rate expressions and buffers taught as fixed procedures
  • Mechanism conventions taught explicitly, with marks attached
  • Priced as a block so the total is known at the start

Investigation design and analysis blocks

Two short blocks timed around the school's laboratory schedule: one before data collection to choose the design and interrogate the research question, one afterwards on processing, uncertainty and evaluation. Feedback on the student's own work only; the tutor never writes, rewrites or completes any part of it.

  • Design type chosen deliberately: titration, calorimetry, rate or spectroscopic
  • Question tested for feasibility before laboratory time is spent
  • Uncertainty propagation and graphing on a shared screen
  • A dated record of advice given, which protects the student

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Jumeirah Village Circle

01

The area comparison, and why it does not resolve

  • The IB is 7 per cent of Dubai private enrolment; HL chemistry is a fraction of that
  • Specialist supply is emirate-wide and sampled by where individuals rent
  • Local coverage claims are cheap to make and hard to check
  • Compare the course instead: it is checkable and it changes the plan

Take it seriously for a moment and then set it aside. Dubai's private sector served 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25, offering 17 different curricula, with the International Baccalaureate at 7 per cent of enrolment against 37 per cent for the UK curriculum. Of that IB cohort a portion takes chemistry and a smaller portion takes it at Higher Level, so the absolute number of people in the emirate who teach Higher Level IB Chemistry is small, and nearly all of them are employed full time at the campuses offering it.

Those people live where they live. Nothing concentrates them in Jumeirah Village Circle rather than JVT, or in Al Barsha South rather than Motor City. A family comparing tutoring between these four communities is comparing samples of the same small population, drawn by the accident of individual rental decisions. A move shortens the school run and does not change which chemists can teach your child.

There is also a credibility point. Research across sixty-odd competitor pages in this market in October 2026 found providers listing twenty-five or more schools as clients with no apparent relationship, agencies routing UAE parents to Indian phone numbers, and one page showing a Dubai footer address on an Abu Dhabi page. A claim of local chemistry coverage costs a provider nothing to make and is almost impossible for a parent to verify.

So the rest of this page compares things that can actually be checked: the IGCSE-to-Diploma gap, Higher Level against Standard Level, IB against A Level, and the investigation design choices. Those comparisons change what you buy. The area comparison does not.

02

The IGCSE-to-Diploma chemistry gap, mapped

This is the comparison nobody does properly and the one that answers most Jumeirah Village Circle enquiries. The step from IGCSE chemistry to the Diploma is usually described as more content. It is better described as a change in kind, and the change is unequal across the syllabus.

Where IGCSE treated something qualitatively, the Diploma treats it quantitatively. Exothermic and endothermic become enthalpy calculations with Hess cycles and sign conventions. The pH scale becomes pH calculation and, at Higher Level, pKa and buffers. Rate factors become rate expressions and orders of reaction. Le Chatelier reasoning becomes the equilibrium constant. Simple oxidation and reduction become oxidation states, cells and electrode potentials.

Where IGCSE treated something descriptively, the Diploma treats it mechanistically. Organic chemistry is the clearest case: IGCSE asks which product forms, the Diploma asks how, with curly arrows beginning at electron density and intermediates drawn with charges shown. That is why revising IGCSE organic content before Year 12 largely duplicates what will be retaught, and why the genuinely useful preparation is the quantitative work instead.

And one area is new rather than extended: the formal treatment of uncertainty and data analysis, which IGCSE touches lightly and the Diploma assesses in its own right. Taken together, this is why a student who scored a 7 or an 8 at IGCSE can find the first term of Diploma chemistry disorienting. The table below is the version worth taking to a prospective tutor.

IGCSE CHEMISTRY TO IB DIPLOMA, TOPIC BY TOPIC

03

Higher Level against Standard Level in chemistry

The second comparison, and the one that most often explains an unexpected grade. In chemistry the Higher Level material does not arrive as separate options; it extends inside each syllabus area, which makes it harder to see coming. A student working through bonding at Standard Level depth meets hybridisation and formal charge at Higher Level in the same unit, not in a later one.

The extensions that carry most of the additional difficulty are transition metals and complex ions, entropy and Gibbs energy, rate expressions and orders of reaction, pKa calculation and buffers, and the full mechanism treatment of nucleophilic substitution and electrophilic addition. Each of those is a genuine step rather than a deeper pass over the same ground.

The mathematical load rises with them, which is why a student with unreliable mole calculations struggles disproportionately at Higher Level. The useful predictor is not whether the student enjoys chemistry but whether their Year 11 quantitative work was secure under time pressure. Where it was not, four or five sessions on stoichiometry before the extension areas arrive is better value than more content teaching during them.

For staffing, the two levels are not interchangeable. A tutor who explains Standard Level bonding and periodicity clearly may be out of their depth on buffer calculations or on a mechanism question where the arrows carry the marks. Asking which level somebody actually teaches, and which extension areas they have taught in the last two years, is a fair question and a revealing one.

04

IB chemistry against A Level chemistry

Worth making explicitly, because several campuses in this cluster run A Level rather than the Diploma and families in Jumeirah Village Circle weigh a move between them. The two qualifications are both respected and they ask for different things.

A Level chemistry is narrower and deeper. Practical skills are assessed through a separate endorsement rather than through a graded internal investigation, which means the practical work does not carry a fifth of the subject grade. The subject sits alongside two or three others, so a student can specialise heavily in sciences and drop humanities and languages entirely.

IB chemistry is broader and carries the internally assessed investigation worth a fifth of the grade, which rewards students who can design and evaluate as well as calculate. It sits inside a six-subject diploma with Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, so the student cannot specialise in the same way and carries a wider workload. For a student who is strong at chemistry and weak at written subjects, that breadth is a cost; for a student who is broadly capable, it is an advantage.

On tutor supply, there is a practical difference that matters for this page's purpose: A Level chemistry support in Dubai is drawn from a separate and somewhat deeper pool, because the UK curriculum is 37 per cent of private enrolment against the IB's 7 per cent. So a family moving a child from the Diploma to A Level will find help marginally easier to book, which is not a reason to move but is worth knowing.

05

Choosing the investigation design, which decides the mark

The internally assessed investigation carries 20 per cent of the chemistry grade and is marked out of 24 across four criteria covering research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Confirm the current criteria with your school. What makes chemistry distinctive is that the type of investigation chosen has a large and predictable effect on how high the ceiling is, and that choice is made before any data exists.

A titration-based design is reliable: readings are precise, uncertainty is straightforward to quantify, and a relationship can be shown convincingly if enough concentrations are used. Its risk is being too simple to show much. A calorimetry design produces interesting conclusions and has a serious evaluation problem — heat loss to the surroundings — which is an advantage for a strong student who can quantify it and a trap for one who writes that insulation could have been better.

A rate-of-reaction design is often the best compromise, because rate data invites graphing and the controlled variables are genuinely controllable with school equipment. A spectroscopic or structure-determination design sounds impressive and usually fails at the design criterion, because school access to the instrumentation is limited and the student ends up analysing supplied data they did not collect.

This is exactly why the three sessions before laboratory time are worth more than ten before submission. A tutor can question whether enough concentrations or temperatures are planned to show a relationship, whether the controlled variable is genuinely controllable, and whether the expected readings are measurable with what the school has. None of that is recoverable afterwards. The boundary is firm throughout: a tutor questions, explains criteria, marks a draft and teaches convention, and never writes, rewrites, completes or supplies the work or its data. One operator in this market was found advertising completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750; buying one is malpractice and the student carries the consequence.

Organic mechanisms: where the Higher Level grade is decided

  • Mechanism marks are largely for the conventions, not only the product
  • Arrows begin at electron density and end where it goes
  • Students should build their own pathway map rather than receive one
  • Data-booklet fluency is worth several marks in timing alone

If one part of Higher Level chemistry accounts for the distance between a 5 and a 7, it is organic mechanisms, and the reason is that the marks are substantially for the conventions rather than for the outcome. Curly arrows must begin at a lone pair or a bond rather than at an atom, must end where the electron density goes, intermediates must be drawn with charges shown, and homolytic and heterolytic fission must be visibly distinguished.

A student who learned organic chemistry at IGCSE as a set of outcomes — this reagent gives that product — can answer a recall question and lose almost everything on a mechanism question, because the product was never what was being assessed. That failure mode is invisible in classwork and brutal in a mark scheme, and it is entirely fixable, because conventions are learnable in a way intuition is not.

The second half of the work is pathway construction. A question asking how to convert one molecule into another two steps away requires the student to hold a map of transformations with the conditions attached to each. Students handed a pathway diagram memorise it and cannot reconstruct it under pressure; students who build their own map, badly at first, can. A good tutor therefore refuses to hand the map over, which is slower and works.

Spectroscopy belongs alongside this, and it depends entirely on fluent use of the data booklet provided in the examination. A student who knows which page holds the infrared absorption ranges and which holds the proton environments answers a structure-determination question in six minutes; one who has to search takes fourteen or guesses. That is several marks produced by familiarity alone, and it is almost never taught deliberately.

07

What chemistry tuition costs, and when to book it

Rates are set by format and tutor category rather than by subject. Published Dubai figures: a qualified subject tutor working online at AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, specialist IB, IGCSE and A-Level provision at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, one UK-based agency at AED 270, premium named or examiner-led provision as high as AED 650, and budget online tuition from AED 45 to AED 150. In-home visits including travel run AED 180 to AED 500, with one provider publishing AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions against AED 799 for eight online sessions.

For chemistry the specialist band is the right one, because the value is in mechanism conventions, data-booklet fluency and knowing the current Structure and Reactivity organisation — none of which is guessable from general chemistry knowledge. The budget band buys supervision, which does not resolve a buffer calculation.

In blocks, the figures are modest and the comparison is useful. Stoichiometry is four or five sessions. The Higher Level extension areas are six to eight. Organic and mechanisms is six to eight. Acids, bases and buffers is three or four. Data analysis is two or three. Investigation support is three plus two. A student who buys stoichiometry first often needs less of everything else, which is the opposite of how families usually order it.

On timing: availability for Higher Level chemistry tightens in the eight weeks before the May session, though less severely than for physics. Every figure here was read from the provider's own published page in October 2026 and describes the market rather than IB Gram, whose fee follows a free trial lesson. We make no examiner claims about any tutor, because current examiner status cannot be evidenced from a website and should never imply access to marking or boundaries.

Scheduling chemistry in a Jumeirah Village Circle week

  • Inner communities home by 3.45pm; the outer belt after 4.30pm
  • Adjacent academies close the early window despite the short run
  • Mechanism work needs attention, so schedule it late rather than tired
  • Weekend mornings for whole papers and investigation work

Most Jumeirah Village Circle students travel five to fifteen minutes to JVT or Al Barsha South, or eight to fifteen to Motor City, and are home by about 3.45pm. Students commuting from Arabian Ranches 3, Mudon or Town Square are home after 4.30pm. That short run looks like it should open an early slot and usually does not, because Dubai Sports City is adjacent and its academies take students out between four and six.

So chemistry sessions work around 5.30pm for students without a club and 7pm to 8.15pm for the many with one. Chemistry tolerates a tired student slightly better than physics does, because calculation procedures can run on established habit, but mechanism work does not: drawing arrows correctly requires attention, and a student doing it at five o'clock after a full day will produce the same error repeatedly.

Place the session after a first attempt at the school's problem set. A student who has tried the questions arrives with a specific sticking point, which is what a specialist resolves in forty minutes; scheduled earlier it becomes supervised homework at a specialist rate. For mechanism work in particular the session needs the student's own flawed attempt to operate on.

Weekend mornings are underused across this cluster and they are the right slot for whole timed papers and for investigation work, both of which need ninety uninterrupted minutes. Online delivery keeps the arrangement robust: sessions move within the week when a laboratory session or an academy fixture shifts, move post-Iftar during Ramadan, and stop at study leave, agreed on day one.

09

Who is permitted to teach chemistry privately here

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid for two years
  • Scarcity is not a reason to engage your child's own chemistry teacher
  • No individual tutor holds a KHDA licence; that permit covers premises
  • Official booklets and papers are linked, never redistributed by us

Because the specialist pool is small, families sometimes consider approaching the school, which makes the permit position worth stating precisely. Private tutoring in the UAE requires a private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and administered by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation. It is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's own listing for issuance of a new work permit for private tutor licensing shows no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the MoHRE smart app, website or e-services system.

Eligible categories include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule has been published, so no amount can honestly be quoted and we do not quote one.

The boundary applies with particular force in a thinly staffed subject. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from giving paid private tuition to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct carries a similar restriction. That is press-reported and should be verified against the current ADEK policy document before being treated as exact wording. Scarcity is not a reason to engage your child's own chemistry teacher privately.

And what nobody holds. A tutoring business with premises in Dubai needs an Educational Services Permit for a training institute from KHDA. IB Gram holds no such permit, operates no UAE office or centre, and is not accredited, licensed, approved by or partnered with KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. We also do not reproduce or distribute syllabus documents, data booklets, past papers or mark schemes; tutors reference and link to the official source.

Where we tutor

The communities around Jumeirah Village Circle

Worth listing so the comparison can be dismissed honestly: school access differs across these areas and chemistry specialist access does not.

Jumeirah Village Circle

Dense mid-rise and townhouse community between Al Khail Road, Hessa Street and Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road. Short school runs, with Dubai Sports City adjacent shaping every afternoon.

JVT

Next door and lower-density, with school provision inside and beside it. Five minutes of commute advantage and an identical chemistry specialist pool.

Al Barsha South

Holds much of the IB provision this cluster uses, including continuum campuses offering Higher Level chemistry. A shorter school run, no change in tutor access.

Motor City

Eight to fifteen minutes along Hessa Street, predominantly British curriculum, so chemistry here is more often A Level or IGCSE than IB. Relevant to a school-move decision.

Dubai Sports City

Adjacent to the Circle and the principal influence on when a chemistry session can realistically run in this whole cluster.

Dubai Hills Estate

Ten to twenty minutes, with substantial recent provision. The nearest genuine change in school choice rather than in tutor availability.

Arabian Ranches

Fifteen to twenty-five minutes along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, with established Diploma provision and small Higher Level chemistry cohorts.

Arabian Ranches 3 and Mudon

Twenty to thirty minutes out, where the commute genuinely moves session timing to 7pm or to weekend mornings.

Town Square

Twenty-five to thirty-five minutes along Al Qudra Road, the longest run here, putting a Diploma student home after 4.30pm.

Jumeirah Park

Ten to fifteen minutes towards the coast, British curriculum, and a frequent destination for students travelling out of the Circle for school.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Jumeirah Village Circle

Jumeirah Village Circle, JVT and Al Barsha South

The closest Diploma chemistry provision to the Circle. Higher Level chemistry cohorts across these campuses are small, which is part of why the subject is thinly staffed and why a student can be the only one in their class stuck on a particular mechanism.

  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Sunmarke School
  • JSS International School
  • Dubai Heights Academy

Dubai Hills, Motor City and the Arabian Ranches belt

A Year 12 student finding the Diploma steep after a strong IGCSE needs the quantitative gap closed. A Higher Level student stalling at 5 needs the extension areas. A family weighing a school move needs the IB against A Level comparison. Those are three different conversations and only one of them starts with a tutor.

  2. 02

    Send one marked script

It distinguishes the four patterns a chemist looks for: unreliable mole calculations, loose explanation vocabulary, mechanism conventions never learned, and data-booklet unfamiliarity showing as time pressure. Those have different fixes and different session counts, and the script settles it in twenty minutes.

  3. 03

    Buy stoichiometry before organic

Families almost always ask about organic chemistry because it looks hardest on the page. A marked script frequently shows unreliable mole work underneath, and fixing that improves energetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry and titration analysis at the same time. It is four or five sessions and it reduces everything that follows.

  4. 04

Take the free trial on the lost question

You and your child meet the proposed chemist over live video. Hand them the lost question with the mark scheme. Afterwards you get their read on which pattern is operating, a session count and the fee, and you decide. No payment is required to reach that point.

  5. 05

    Choose the investigation design deliberately

Book three sessions before the laboratory work to choose between a titration, calorimetry or rate design and interrogate the question. The design criterion is settled before a single reading is taken, and a question that cannot show a relationship caps the mark no matter how well it is written up.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We dismiss the area comparison honestly

Higher Level chemistry teachers are scarce across the whole emirate and live wherever they live, so Jumeirah Village Circle, JVT, Al Barsha South and Motor City are drawing from the same small pool. We say so rather than claiming local coverage, and we tell you where the available specialist is based before any payment.

The IGCSE gap mapped rather than asserted

The step into Diploma chemistry is a change in kind, not just quantity: qualitative becomes quantitative, descriptive becomes mechanistic. We map it topic by topic so a family can see that the useful preparation is the moles work, not the organic content that will be retaught anyway.

Levels staffed separately

Higher Level extends inside each syllabus area, so a tutor comfortable at Standard Level may be out of their depth on buffers or on a mechanism question where the arrows carry the marks. We propose a chemist with the level named and will say which extension areas they have taught recently.

Stoichiometry first, even when it is not the complaint

Almost every enquiry is about organic chemistry and a marked script usually shows mole calculations failing underneath. Four or five sessions there improves several areas at once, which is the opposite of the order families instinctively buy in.

Investigation design treated as the decision it is

In chemistry the choice between titration, calorimetry and rate designs has a predictable effect on the achievable mark, and it is made before any data exists. We spend three sessions on that choice rather than ten on rescuing a finished report.

Online delivery and no invented claims

Lessons are live one-to-one video in Gulf Standard Time; IB Gram makes no home visits in the UAE, as in-person home tutoring exists only in our India service. No examiner claims, no guaranteed grades, and every AED figure here credited to its published source.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Jumeirah Village Circle: your questions answered

Is chemistry tutoring easier to find in Jumeirah Village Circle or the areas next door?+

Neither, and the arithmetic explains why. The International Baccalaureate is about 7 per cent of Dubai private-school enrolment out of 387,441 students across 227 private schools, only a portion of that cohort takes chemistry, and fewer take it at Higher Level. The resulting population of specialists across the whole emirate is small and almost entirely employed full time. Those people live wherever they rent, so the Circle, JVT, Al Barsha South and Motor City are all sampling the same pool by accident rather than by any local logic.

How big is the step from IGCSE chemistry to the Diploma?+

Larger than in any other science, and it is a change in kind rather than quantity. Where IGCSE was qualitative the Diploma is quantitative: exothermic and endothermic become enthalpy calculations with Hess cycles, the pH scale becomes pH calculation, rate factors become rate expressions, Le Chatelier becomes the equilibrium constant. Where IGCSE was descriptive the Diploma is mechanistic: organic chemistry moves from which product forms to how, with curly arrow conventions carrying the marks. And formal uncertainty treatment is genuinely new.

What should my child revise over the summer before Diploma chemistry?+

The moles work, not the organic chemistry. The Diploma rebuilds organic from the beginning with mechanisms, so revising Cambridge 0620 or Pearson 4CH1 organic content largely duplicates what Year 12 will teach anyway. What does not get rebuilt is quantitative confidence: reading an equation as a ratio, concentration calculations, limiting reagents, percentage yield and unit conversion. Four sessions on that removes a disproportionate share of the Year 13 repair work, and families around Jumeirah Village Circle usually revise the opposite half.

How much harder is Chemistry HL than SL?+

It is deeper rather than broader, and the extensions sit inside each syllabus area rather than arriving as separate options, which makes them harder to see coming. The ones carrying most of the additional difficulty are transition metals and complex ions, entropy and Gibbs energy, rate expressions and orders of reaction, pKa and buffers, and the full mechanism treatment. The mathematical load rises with them, so the honest predictor is whether Year 11 quantitative work was secure under time pressure, not whether the student enjoys the subject.

Which Higher Level chemistry area do students most underestimate?+

Kinetics. At Standard Level it is factors affecting rate, which feels familiar from IGCSE; at Higher Level it becomes rate expressions, orders of reaction and the rate-determining step, which is genuinely new conceptual content wearing the same name. Students read the heading, assume they know it, and discover otherwise in a mock. Buffers are the second: the calculations look forbidding and are actually a fixed procedure, so three or four sessions usually secures them completely.

How does IB chemistry compare with A Level chemistry?+

A Level chemistry is narrower and deeper, with practical skills assessed through a separate endorsement rather than a graded investigation, and it sits alongside two or three other subjects. IB chemistry is broader, carries an internally assessed investigation worth a fifth of the grade, and sits inside a six-subject diploma with Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay. A specialist who wants to drop humanities may prefer A Level; a broadly capable student who can design and evaluate as well as calculate is well served by the IB.

Which investigation design gives my child the best chance?+

Usually a rate-of-reaction design, because rate data invites graphing and the controlled variables are genuinely controllable with school equipment. A titration design is reliable and precise but can be too simple to show much. Calorimetry produces interesting conclusions and carries a serious heat-loss problem, which is an advantage for a strong student who can quantify it and a trap for one who writes that insulation could have been better. Spectroscopic designs usually fail at the design criterion because the data ends up supplied.

Why does my child lose mechanism marks when the product is right?+

Because the marks are largely for the conventions. Curly arrows must begin at a lone pair or a bond rather than at an atom, must end where the electron density goes, intermediates must show charges, and homolytic and heterolytic fission must be visibly distinguished. A student who learned organic chemistry at IGCSE as a list of outcomes can name the product and lose nearly all the mechanism credit. It is invisible in classwork and brutal in a mark scheme, and conventions are learnable in a way intuition is not.

Does the data booklet mean less memorisation?+

It means a different demand: fluent navigation under time pressure. A student who knows which page holds the infrared absorption ranges, which holds nuclear magnetic resonance proton environments and which holds bond enthalpies answers a structure-determination question in six minutes; one who has to search takes fourteen or runs out of time. Two further skills matter: knowing what the booklet omits so no time is wasted looking, and reading the given precision to decide the significant figures in the answer.

What should a chemistry tutor fix before anything else?+

Stoichiometry, in most cases, even when the complaint is organic chemistry. Moles, concentration, limiting reagents and yield are load-bearing: weakness there reappears in energetics, equilibrium, electrochemistry and every titration analysis. Four or five sessions of timed calculation practice with unit and significant-figure discipline improves several areas at once. Families ask about organic first because it looks hardest on the page, and a marked script frequently shows the mole work failing underneath it.

What do the chemistry blocks cost, and in what order should we buy them?+

Rates are published by format rather than subject: roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour for a qualified online subject tutor, AED 200 to AED 450 and above for specialist IB provision, one UK agency at AED 270, and up to AED 650 for premium examiner-led work. In blocks: four or five sessions for stoichiometry, six to eight for the Higher Level extension areas or for organic and mechanisms, two or three for data analysis. Market rates researched October 2026, not IB Gram's prices, which follow the free trial.

Can online tuition handle mechanism drawing properly?+

Better than paper, which surprises people. Mechanism work is iterative — draw the arrow, see why it is wrong, erase it, draw it again — and a shared screen lets both people watch that happen with the previous attempt still visible for comparison. The session can also be revisited, which matters when a student is learning conventions rather than facts. What online cannot replace is the school laboratory, where investigation data is collected and measurement sense is built, and we would not claim otherwise.

When should a chemistry session run for a student in the Circle?+

Around 5.30pm for students without a club and 7pm to 8.15pm for those with one, later for anybody commuting from Arabian Ranches 3, Mudon or Town Square. Most Circle students are home by 3.45pm, but Dubai Sports City is adjacent and its academies occupy four to six. Chemistry tolerates tiredness slightly better than physics because calculation can run on habit, but mechanism work does not: drawing arrows correctly needs attention, and a tired student repeats the same error.

What if no Higher Level chemist is free when we need one?+

You get the realistic wait and the specialist's location rather than a general science tutor. Availability tightens in the eight weeks before the May session, though less severely than for physics, and spectroscopy and structure determination is the scarcest individual request in this syllabus. In the meantime a stoichiometry or data analysis block can usually run with a different specialist, and both are genuinely useful work. Where the available tutor is based outside the UAE, we say so, including the time zone, before any payment.

Compare the course, not the community

Comparing Jumeirah Village Circle with JVT or Al Barsha South for chemistry will not get you anywhere: the specialist pool is emirate-wide and small, and it is sampled by where people happen to live. The comparisons that pay are the IGCSE-to-Diploma gap, Higher Level against Standard Level, and which investigation design your child should choose. Send us the level, the syllabus area and one marked script, and we will propose a chemist you can test on exactly those in a free trial lesson over live video. No home visits in the UAE and no promised grades.
