IB IGCSE Home Tutor in Al Ain

Families search for an IB IGCSE home tutor in Al Ain for one of two reasons: a student crossing from IGCSE into the Diploma Programme, or two children in the same house sitting different boards. Both are planning problems before they are teaching problems. This page sets out the gap between the two systems subject by subject, and how IB Gram covers both over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Al Ain

The two situations behind this search, and why both need a plan before a tutor

Almost everyone searching for help across both boards in Al Ain is in one of two positions. The first is a single student in transition: a Year 11 finishing IGCSE and starting the Diploma Programme in September, usually with a sense that the step up is real but no concrete idea where it will bite. The second is a household with siblings on different tracks, one sitting Cambridge IGCSE papers and another two years into the Diploma, with one family budget, one evening and one set of school runs to fit both into.

Those two problems have one thing in common: the hard part is not finding someone who knows the subject. It is sequencing. A transition student does not need Diploma content in June of Year 11; they need to know which habits built for an IGCSE mark scheme will cost them marks in a Diploma paper, and which three or four topics the Diploma assumes they already own. A two-board household does not need two full tutoring programmes; it needs a decision about which child's problem is costing more grades this term, because almost no family can fund and sustain both at full intensity.

The step between the systems is real and specific rather than general. IGCSE rewards accurate recall and clean method under time pressure, and its mark schemes are relatively mechanical: the mark is there or it is not. Diploma papers want the same accuracy plus sustained reasoning, evaluation and, in several subjects, a command of unfamiliar data. Internal assessment moves from being a small component or absent entirely at IGCSE to being a substantial, individually produced piece of work marked against lettered criteria in most Diploma subjects. A student who was efficient at IGCSE and is now sinking is usually meeting those two changes rather than running out of ability.

Al Ain adds a supply dimension to all of this. The city is part of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and its private schools are licensed by ADEK, which supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate. Its private-school set is considerably smaller than Abu Dhabi island's, so Higher Level Diploma sciences and the less common languages are the recurring gaps, and a household needing one tutor for Cambridge 0580 and another for Higher Level Chemistry is drawing on two pools, one comfortable and one thin.

On delivery, the position is stated rather than implied. IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE and holds no office, centre or branch in the country, because in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. Al Ain families are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For a two-board household that is a practical advantage before it is anything else: back-to-back slots for two children in different systems, with no tutor's journey between them and no requirement that one person happen to know both boards.

At a glance

  • Two situations: one student in transition, or siblings on different boards
  • The IGCSE-to-Diploma step is about reasoning and internal assessment, not difficulty alone
  • Most Diploma subject IAs are marked against lettered criteria in the current subject guide
  • Al Ain's smaller school set makes Higher Level sciences the thin pool
  • Cambridge and Pearson run two IGCSE series a year; UAE schools sit the May IB session
  • Lessons are one-to-one over live video, not home visits
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A household crossing both systems is dealing with up to four stages at once. These are the stages, what each actually assesses, and what an Al Ain family should be watching for in each.

MYPAges 11-16 · MYP 1-5

IB Middle Years Programme

Criterion-referenced from the start, which is the single biggest difference from a Key Stage 3 course. Students are assessed against published criteria with descriptors rather than against a mark total, and the habit of reading a descriptor and writing to it is the most transferable skill the programme builds. Personal Project sits at the end of MYP 5.

In Al Ain, MYP students sometimes move into an IGCSE track rather than straight into the Diploma, because of which schools offer what. That crossing is underestimated: MYP students arrive at IGCSE strong on extended reasoning and short on the mechanical accuracy and timed recall that an IGCSE paper rewards.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson International GCSE

Two years ending in externally marked papers. Cambridge Extended sciences use a multiple-choice paper worth 30%, an extended theory paper worth 50% and Paper 6 Alternative to Practical worth 20%. Pearson's 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1 use two written papers with practical skills assessed inside them. Mathematics splits into Core and Extended for 0580, Foundation and Higher for 4MA1.

The grade matters more in Al Ain than in a larger city, because it decides whether a Higher Level combination is available locally at all. A student who wants Higher Level Chemistry and Physics in a city with fewer Diploma places needs the IGCSE grades that make that case, and sometimes a conversation about commuting.

DPAges 16-19 · DP1 and DP2

IB Diploma Programme, subjects at SL and HL

Six subjects, three or four at Higher Level, each with external papers and, in most subjects, an internally assessed component produced by the student and marked against lettered criteria set out in the current subject guide. The step from IGCSE is in sustained reasoning, evaluation and handling unfamiliar material rather than in volume of content alone.

UAE schools sit the May session. This page publishes no specific IB exam or results date, because no IB session date in this project has been confirmed against the IB itself; confirm every date with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org before planning around it.

DP COREAges 16-19 · Across DP1 and DP2

The Diploma core: Extended Essay, TOK and CAS

The Extended Essay is an independent research piece with a word limit set in the current IB guidance; Theory of Knowledge is assessed through an essay and an exhibition; CAS is not academically assessed but is a completion requirement. The core is where most Diploma time management fails, because none of it has a weekly deadline from a teacher.

This is also where the integrity line matters most. A tutor may teach research skills, question a research question, and give written feedback on a student's own draft. No tutor may write, complete or produce an Extended Essay, TOK essay or Internal Assessment, and a provider offering to is putting the student's diploma at risk, not their own business.

Subject coverage

IB subjects we tutor

For the Diploma side of a two-board household, these are the subjects Al Ain families most often need, with what each actually assesses and where the step up from IGCSE is felt.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The route that assumes algebraic fluency from the first week. An IGCSE Extended student arrives with the technique but not the habit of proof and sustained multi-part reasoning. The internally assessed exploration is where most SL students lose ground, because it needs a question narrow enough to answer properly.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, data and technology-led work rather than proof. Students who chose it to avoid algebra discover that the reasoning demand is comparable and the statistics content is heavier. University prerequisites differ between the two routes, which is a decision to check before DP1 rather than after.

Physics

HL and SL

The largest jump from IGCSE of any science. Questions build across several parts, graphs must be interpreted rather than read, and uncertainty treatment becomes an assessed skill. HL adds substantial content on top. Students who scored well at IGCSE on recall meet reasoning here for the first time.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms carry most of the difficulty, and the internally assessed investigation demands a genuinely testable question. Al Ain's thinner Higher Level pool makes this one of the subjects where local tutor supply runs out soonest.

Biology

HL and SL

Volume is the obvious challenge and command terms are the real one: distinguish, outline, evaluate and discuss each demand a different structure, and marks go missing when a knowledgeable student writes the wrong shape of answer. Data-based questions reward practice more than rereading notes.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy, definition precision and evaluation decide the grade. Students arriving from IGCSE Business or Economics carry useful vocabulary and underestimate how much of the mark sits in the evaluative final paragraph of a long answer.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven, with tools that must be applied to the stimulus rather than described. The internally assessed work requires real organisational material, which is a research and access problem as much as an analytical one and benefits from early planning.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen text analysis and comparative work, assessed partly through oral components. The step from IGCSE English is from writing about a text to constructing an argument about how a text works, which is a different skill and the main reason strong IGCSE candidates stumble.

English B

HL and SL

For students working in English as an additional language. Receptive, productive and interactive skills are all assessed, including oral components, so practice has to include speaking rather than only writing. Progress is visible quickly with structured weekly work.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Algorithmic thinking, data structures and a substantial internally assessed solution developed for a real client. Suits students who enjoyed Cambridge 0478, and it is one of the thinnest Higher Level pools in a smaller city like Al Ain.

Psychology

HL and SL

Study-based argument: students must deploy named research accurately and evaluate it. The failure mode is describing studies rather than using them, which is a structural habit a tutor can correct quickly once it is identified from a marked paper.

Arabic A and Arabic B

HL and SL

Separate routes for first-language and additional-language candidates, and the mismatch between them is a common tutoring error. Private schools in the UAE must teach Arabic alongside their licensed curriculum, so most Al Ain students carry Arabic in some form regardless of their Diploma choices.

IGCSE coverage

IGCSE subjects we tutor

On the IGCSE side of the same household, these are the subjects and codes to give any tutor before a first session, with the loss pattern each typically produces.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580, Edexcel 4MA1)

Core and Extended; Foundation and Higher tier

Route and tier are set at entry, months before revision. Marks go on algebraic fractions, non-calculator work and questions where method must be shown. The most comfortable tutor pool in Al Ain, so choose on route experience rather than availability.

Physics (Cambridge 0625, Edexcel 4PH1)

Core and Extended; Foundation and Higher

Electricity, moments and formula rearrangement. Cambridge candidates also carry Paper 6 Alternative to Practical at 20% of the grade, which is written reasoning about experiments and unusually coachable because question types repeat.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620, Edexcel 4CH1)

Core and Extended; Foundation and Higher

Three distinct problems inside one subject: moles and reacting masses need drilling, qualitative analysis needs a memorised table, organic chemistry needs pattern recognition. A general Chemistry booking usually addresses whichever the tutor prefers.

Biology (Cambridge 0610, Edexcel 4BI1)

Core and Extended; Foundation and Higher

Command terms do most of the damage. Describe, explain and suggest want different answer shapes, and a knowledgeable student scoring half marks is almost always meeting that rather than a content gap.

Coordinated Sciences (Cambridge 0654)

Double award

Widely used in Al Ain because triple science blocks are small. The paper structure differs from the single sciences, so timed practice must use 0654 papers. Preparation with 0625 or 0620 material builds misplaced confidence.

First Language English (Cambridge 0500, Edexcel 4EA1)

Single tier

Directed writing and composition carry the grade, and the work is writing to a mark scheme rather than writing well. Useful groundwork for English A at Diploma level, though the analytical demand there is a genuine step up.

Additional Mathematics (Cambridge 0606), Further Pure (Edexcel 4PM1)

Single tier

The best preparation available for Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, and the thinnest tutor pool in Al Ain. Calculus notation, binomial expansion and trigonometric identities carry the lost marks.

Business Studies and Economics (Cambridge 0450, 0455)

Single tier

Case-study technique and the evaluation mark at the end of long questions. Students continuing into Diploma Economics or Business Management carry the vocabulary forward and have to rebuild the answer structure.

Computer Science and ICT (Cambridge 0478, 0417)

Single tier

Pseudocode and trace tables for 0478; timed practical technique for 0417. Both work well over live video because the whole subject lives on a shared screen, and 0478 is the natural feeder into Diploma Computer Science.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

A two-board household needs a shape of support rather than a number of hours. These are the three that work, all delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

A transition block across the summer and DP1 autumn

Eight to twelve sessions spanning the end of Year 11 and the first term of DP1, aimed squarely at the gap rather than at content. The work is the assumed knowledge a Diploma course starts from, the command terms that change, and the first internally assessed task planned properly instead of rushed. This is the cheapest intervention available in the whole Diploma, because it prevents the DP1 spring crisis rather than repairing it.

  • Assumed-knowledge audit for the chosen Higher Level subjects
  • Command-term and answer-structure work, IGCSE habits to Diploma expectations
  • Early planning for the first internally assessed task, with the criteria read properly
  • A written plan with a defined end point rather than an open booking

Back-to-back slots for siblings on different boards

Two consecutive one-to-one sessions in one evening, each with its own tutor matched to its own board, rather than one tutor stretched across both. The practical gain over a local arrangement is that nobody travels between the two, so the second session starts when the first ends. Each child keeps a separate plan, because siblings almost never share a loss pattern.

  • Separate specialists, separate plans, one evening and one family schedule
  • 60 or 90 minutes each, set after the Al Ain school run
  • Separate written notes, so progress is readable per child
  • Reviewed separately every four to six weeks against marked work

Single-subject intensity where the household can only fund one

The honest option for most families. One child, one subject, the one costing the most grades this term, worked on properly until the loss pattern changes, then reassessed. Spreading a budget across two children and four subjects produces four sets of hours that each move nothing, which is the most common way a tutoring budget disappears without result.

  • Diagnosis from marked papers decides which subject gets the hours
  • A defined block with review points and an end date
  • Explicit reassessment: the other child may be next term's priority
  • Reduction or stopping treated as a legitimate outcome

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Ain

01

What an IB IGCSE home tutor in Al Ain means in practice

The phrase bundles three different requests. Some families want one person who can teach both systems, which exists but is rarer than the search implies, because the boards reward different things and genuine fluency in both is a specialist position rather than a default. Some want a tutor for a student moving between the systems, which is a transition job with a defined shape. And some want two tutors in one arrangement for two children, which is a scheduling and budget problem more than a teaching one.

On home tutoring specifically, the market position in Al Ain deserves a straight answer. In-home one-to-one tutoring exists here and families use it. Published UAE rates run roughly AED 180 to AED 500 an hour with travel included, against roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour for a qualified subject tutor working online, with monthly packages seen around AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home sessions and around AED 799 for eight online sessions. Those are market observations read in October 2026 and attributed to the providers who published them, not an IB Gram price list.

For a two-board household the arithmetic turns sharply. Two children at an in-home rate, each weekly, is a monthly figure most families will not sustain for two years, and it requires either one tutor who covers both boards or two separate journeys into the same evening. In a city where Higher Level Diploma sciences are a thin local pool, the chance that the person who can drive to Zakher on Tuesdays also happens to teach both Cambridge 0580 Extended and Higher Level Chemistry is small.

IB Gram's arrangement removes that constraint and the page should say how. There are no home visits anywhere in the UAE and no premises in the country; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. Al Ain families are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, which makes two consecutive sessions with two different specialists an ordinary Tuesday rather than a logistical feat. The comparison table below sets out what each arrangement actually delivers for a household running both boards at once.

The IGCSE-to-Diploma gap, subject by subject

This is the section Al Ain families actually need and almost nobody writes. The step from IGCSE into the Diploma Programme is not uniform. In some subjects it is mostly content, in others mostly reasoning, and in a few it is a new kind of assessment the student has never met. Knowing which of those applies to your child's chosen Higher Levels tells you where the summer before DP1 should go.

Mathematics is the clearest case. A student arriving in Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level from Cambridge 0580 Extended has the algebraic technique but not the habit of proof, and will meet multi-part questions where each part depends on the last. A student arriving from Additional Mathematics 0606 is in a much stronger position, which is why 0606 is worth taking if the school offers it and worth building externally if it does not. Applications and Interpretation looks gentler and demands comparable reasoning with heavier statistics.

The sciences split differently. Physics is the largest jump, because IGCSE rewards recall and clean substitution while Diploma Physics asks for interpretation, uncertainty handling and reasoning across several parts of a question. Chemistry's jump sits in energetics, equilibrium and mechanisms. Biology's is volume plus command terms. In all three, the internally assessed investigation is a research-design task that no IGCSE course prepares a student for, and it is the single most common source of DP1 panic.

The table maps the main routes. Treat the weeks column as a planning estimate for a focused transition block rather than a promise, and read it alongside the subject's own current guide, which your school's IB coordinator holds. The point of the table is to let a family spend the summer on the two subjects where the gap is widest rather than on all six equally.

What changes between an IGCSE paper and a Diploma paper

Underneath every subject-specific gap sits the same structural shift, and naming it helps a student more than another topic list. IGCSE assessment is mostly externally examined, relatively mechanical in its marking, and built around accurate recall and clean method under time pressure. Marks are discrete: a unit is present or absent, a step is shown or missing. That rewards a particular kind of efficiency, and students who are good at it become good at it quickly.

Diploma assessment keeps all of that and adds two things. The first is sustained reasoning: longer questions where later parts depend on earlier ones, unfamiliar data to interpret, and evaluation marks that require a judgement rather than a fact. The second is internal assessment. In most Diploma subjects the student produces an individually assessed piece of work marked against lettered criteria, each with its own mark allocation published in the current subject guide. A student who has only ever sat papers has never managed a project with no weekly deadline before.

Command terms change too, and this is where good IGCSE candidates lose marks first. At IGCSE the working set is dominated by describe, explain, calculate and suggest. At Diploma level the same words appear with greater expectations alongside outline, distinguish, discuss, evaluate, justify and to what extent. A student who answers a discuss question with a well-organised description has written something accurate that scores poorly, and will usually insist the marking was harsh. The fix is reading the command-term list in the subject guide and practising each shape deliberately.

The practical lesson for a transition block is to spend the first two or three sessions on assessment literacy rather than on content. Read the criteria. Read the command terms. Mark a past answer together against the published descriptors. That work is boring and it pays immediately, because it changes every answer the student writes for the next two years rather than one topic.

Internal assessment: what a tutor may do, and the line that protects the diploma

  • Criteria explained, research questions interrogated, drafts given written feedback
  • Never written, never completed, never edited until the voice is no longer the student's
  • Most subject internal assessments are marked against lettered criteria in the current guide
  • Board material is linked from official sources rather than reproduced or supplied

Internal assessment is the part of the Diploma where families are most often sold something they should refuse. One provider competing in this market sells completed Internal Assessments outright. That is an academic-integrity breach under IB rules, and the consequence lands on the student, who can lose the qualification, rather than on the seller. IB Gram does not write, complete or produce an Internal Assessment, Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge essay, Personal Project or any assessed coursework, and does not edit a draft until it stops being the student's own work.

What a tutor may legitimately do covers most of what actually helps. Teach the skills the task assesses. Explain the criteria and their descriptors in the student's own words, using the current subject guide the school holds. Interrogate a research question before three weeks are spent on an unanswerable one, which is the commonest cause of a weak internal assessment. Model an analysis on different data so the method is understood rather than copied. Read the student's own draft and say where a claim is unsupported. Hold a schedule of internal deadlines the student actually meets.

The distinction a parent can hold onto is that a tutor works on the student's thinking and never on the student's text. If a session produces sentences the student did not write, the line has been crossed. If it produces a student who can explain why their own paragraph was weak, it has not. Ask any prospective tutor to state their position on this before the first session, and treat vagueness as an answer.

There is a copyright dimension as well. IB, Cambridge and Pearson syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables and subject guides are referenced and linked from their official sources, never reproduced or supplied as downloads. A provider offering to send you a folder of board material is telling you how else they cut corners. For current IB subject guides and command-term lists, the school's IB coordinator is the correct and legitimate source.

05

The other transitions an Al Ain household meets

IGCSE to Diploma is the headline crossing, and it is not the only one. Al Ain's smaller school set means students move between curricula more often than in a city with more options, usually because a family relocates within the UAE, because a school changes its offer, or because the subject combination a student wants exists somewhere else. Each crossing has a predictable gap, and naming it converts a vague worry into a few weeks of targeted work.

MYP into IGCSE is the crossing families underestimate most. MYP students arrive strong on extended reasoning and criterion-referenced writing and short on mechanical accuracy and timed recall, which is exactly what an IGCSE paper rewards. The work is not remedial; it is a change of register. Three or four weeks of timed short-answer drilling usually closes it, and a student who was told they were weak often turns out to have been well prepared for a different test.

CBSE or another national curriculum into IGCSE runs the opposite way. Those students typically arrive with strong computational fluency and meet a question style that asks them to explain, justify and apply rather than to reproduce. The first weeks of any tutoring arrangement should go on question style and command terms before any new content is touched, because the gap is in how answers are rewarded rather than in what is known.

American curriculum into the Diploma, and British Year 11 into DP1, are their own cases, and in every one the useful first step is the same: an assumed-knowledge audit for the specific subjects chosen, not a general catch-up. The table sets the main routes out. The weeks column assumes focused one-to-one work on the gap rather than a full re-teach of a course.

Two children, one evening, one budget

This is the practical problem a two-board household actually has, and it is arithmetic before it is pedagogy. Start with the evening. One child arrives home from an Al Ain school run between 4pm and 5pm depending on the district and the route; the other may arrive later. Two 90-minute sessions plus food and the rest of life does not fit before a reasonable bedtime for a Year 10, so something gives. Usually what gives is the younger child's session, quietly, over about six weeks.

Then the money. At the published market band for a qualified subject tutor, roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, two children at 90 minutes a week each runs to a monthly figure most families will reconsider by the second term, and the in-home band of AED 180 to AED 500 an hour makes it considerably steeper. The honest planning answer is usually not two full programmes. It is one child at a time, chosen on evidence, with a stated plan to reassess.

Choosing between your own children feels uncomfortable and is the right call. The deciding question is which subject is costing the most grades relative to what it will take to fix, and that comes from marked papers rather than from who seems more upset. A command-term problem in Diploma Biology may be a six-session fix with a large payoff. A content gap across two years of Chemistry is a term's work. A Year 10 who is coping can usually wait a term; a DP2 student four months from the May session cannot.

The table runs the arithmetic for the common household shapes at published market bands, so a family can see the real monthly commitment before agreeing to anything. These are market figures, not IB Gram prices; our rate is agreed after a free trial lesson and a tutor match, and the structure that works for most two-board households is sequential rather than simultaneous.

Two calendars in one house: IGCSE series and the Diploma year

A household running both boards is running two timetables that do not align, and planning them together is the most useful thing a parent can do in September. On the IGCSE side the dates are published and sourced. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Checkpoint tests in March, May and October. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE exams are available in May/June and November each year.

Entry deadlines are the pressure point. A Cambridge candidate here chooses between two sittings, June and November, and the choice is really a decision about how much syllabus is left: June is the full-course sitting most Al Ain schools enter their cohort for, and November is where a disappointing grade gets a second attempt. Each has an entry deadline that closes months ahead of the papers - in the spring for the June window, and early in the autumn term for November - and the only date to act on is the one printed on the statement of entry the centre issues, because Cambridge also allocates every school to one of six administrative zones with its own timetable. Pearson's November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026; June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson publishes provisional timetables in advance, and because they can be revised, work from the live official timetable rather than a restated date.

On the Diploma side this page is deliberately thin, and that is a factual position rather than an omission. UAE schools sit the May session. No IB session, upload or results date in this project has been confirmed against the IB itself, so no specific IB date appears here; confirm every one with your school's IB coordinator or on ibo.org, and plan the DP2 year from the school's own internal deadline calendar, which is the document that actually governs an internally assessed component.

One operational detail affects the IGCSE child directly. Every Cambridge centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the centre's zone, and Cambridge states it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after the wrong zone timetable was used. Your school's exams officer knows the zone. And Ramadan, whose dates move each year, reshapes the study day for both children at once: shorter school hours, post-Iftar sessions, consolidation rather than full timed papers, with the heavy practice moved to the weeks either side.

Permits, ADEK and what to verify before you pay anyone

  • Ask to see the MoHRE private tuition work permit before the first paid session
  • Free of charge, two years' validity, two-working-day published completion time
  • ADEK ethics rules bar school staff from paid tutoring of their own school's students
  • British-track equivalency counts five IGCSE subjects, excluding Arabic and Islamic education
  • No IB equivalency points figure is published here; verify it on moe.gov.ae

The checks are the same for both boards and they take one message. Private tutoring in the UAE runs on the MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits. It is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18, and university students. The official route is MoHRE's own service, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, with a published two-working-day completion time.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published by the ministry, so any specific amount quoted to you is unsourced and none appears on this page. A tutor who says the permit costs money or takes months has not applied for one, since it is free and the published completion time is two working days.

For Al Ain, the ADEK layer matters. ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and its professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school; the MoHRE permit's code of conduct also bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. This is press-reported rather than quoted from the current ADEK policy document, so verify the exact wording with ADEK. In a two-board household the temptation is larger, because one parent often knows one child's teacher well. Do not pursue it.

Finally, status. A tutoring operation with premises and staff needs an educational services permit from the relevant education authority, which is a different instrument from an individual's tutor permit. IB Gram is an independent online tutor-matching platform with no premises, centre or branch in the UAE, and holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. On Ministry of Education equivalency, the published British-track rule asks for five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at no less than E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic education, plus one Advanced Level subject at no less than E or two Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade. No IB points threshold is published in the sources used here, so none is stated; verify on moe.gov.ae, and note that equivalency is a process the Ministry runs rather than anything a tutoring provider performs or guarantees.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Al Ain

Two children on two boards means two slots in one evening, and where you live in Al Ain decides when those slots can start. These are the districts families book from.

Al Jimi

Central and dense by Al Ain standards, with short school runs. Households here can usually run two consecutive sessions from 5pm, which is the only part of the city where a double evening starts that early and holds.

Al Mutaredh and Al Khabisi

The districts where two-board households are most common, because the mixed curriculum catchments nearby mean siblings often attend different schools. Back-to-back slots are the standard arrangement rather than the exception.

Falaj Hazza and Al Muwaiji

Established villa districts with the study space for two students working separately. The constraint is arrival time rather than room, which is why a 5.30pm first slot and a 7pm second slot is the pattern that survives a term.

Hili and Al Qattara

Longer northern bus routes, so the first session rarely starts before 5.30pm and the second lands after 7pm. Shorter sessions work better here than longer ones nobody has the energy for.

Al Towayya and Asharej

Near the university quarter and heavy on academic households, which shows in the requests: Higher Level sciences and Extended Mathematics rather than general homework support, and planned blocks rather than open bookings.

Zakher

Spread-out southern district where local supply thins fastest for Higher Level subjects. For a household needing both an IGCSE tutor and a Diploma specialist, the Diploma side is the one that will not be found nearby.

Al Maqam and Al Yahar

Outlying districts where a tutor's round trip can exceed a lesson, let alone two. A no-journey arrangement from 4.30pm is what makes two sessions in one evening practical at all here.

Al Foah and Al Sarooj

Fewer private-school catchments nearby, so families routinely look beyond their own area for subject help. For Diploma subjects that is the normal position rather than a compromise.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Ain

Campuses offering the Diploma Programme and the Middle Years Programme

Al Ain has fewer Diploma places than Abu Dhabi island, which has two consequences for a household. Higher Level combinations can be limited, and a student wanting a specific pairing sometimes commutes or changes school. It also means Diploma cohorts are small, so a subject may be taught by one teacher with no departmental second opinion available.

  • Emirates National School Al Ain
  • Al Ain Academy
  • Brighton College Al Ain
  • Al Ain English Speaking School

Campuses running IGCSE and International GCSE tracks

Larger cohorts in maths and the sciences, narrower option blocks than the capital, and a steady flow of students arriving from other curricula part-way through. For a sibling pair split across IGCSE and the Diploma, these are usually the schools on the IGCSE side of the household.

  • Our Own English High School Al Ain
  • The International School of Choueifat Al Ain
  • Al Dhafra Private Schools Al Ain
  • Al Ain Juniors School
  • Liwa International School Al Ain

Schools are named only as context for the Al Ain education landscape. IB Gram claims no affiliation with, endorsement from, or partnership with any school listed on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say which situation you are in

One student crossing from IGCSE into the Diploma, or two children on different boards. The two need different plans, and telling us which saves a conversation. For a transition, send the chosen Higher Level subjects; for a household, send both children's subjects, boards and year groups.

  2. 02

Send the codes and one marked paper per child

For the IGCSE side, the board, syllabus code, tier and series. For the Diploma side, the subjects and levels and the school's internal deadline calendar. One recently marked paper per child turns a description of the problem into a diagnosis a specialist can act on.

  3. 03

Agree which child gets the hours first

Most households cannot sustain two full programmes, and pretending otherwise produces two half-programmes that move nothing. We will say which loss pattern looks cheapest to fix and which deadline is closest, and recommend an order, including the option to start with one child and reassess next term.

  4. 04

Take the free trial before any rate is agreed

One trial per child, with the relevant specialist rather than one person stretched across both boards. Use it to test whether the tutor can read the marked paper and name the loss. If a match is wrong, say so and a different specialist is proposed; nothing is paid before a match is agreed.

  5. 05

Fix consecutive slots the school run survives

Work backwards from each child's normal arrival time, not the best case, and add thirty minutes. Central Al Ain households usually run 5pm and 6.30pm; Hili, Zakher, Al Maqam and Al Yahar households are better served from 5.30pm and 7pm. No journey sits between the two sessions.

  6. 06

Review each child separately on marked work

Every four to six weeks, compare marked papers side by side per child rather than comparing siblings. If a loss pattern has closed, that child's hours can move to the other. Reduction and stopping are legitimate outcomes and should be stated out loud at each review.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Two boards, two specialists, one schedule

Each child is matched to a tutor who has taught their own specification rather than one person stretched across both systems. Cambridge Extended sciences, Pearson's two-paper structure and Diploma internal assessment reward different work, and fluency in one does not imply fluency in another.

The transition treated as its own job

A defined block across the end of Year 11 and the first term of DP1, aimed at assumed knowledge, command terms and the first internally assessed task. It is the cheapest intervention in the whole Diploma, because preventing a DP1 spring crisis costs a fraction of repairing one.

Honest budget arithmetic

This page runs the monthly numbers at published market bands for one child and for two, because a household needs the real figure before agreeing to anything. The arrangement most families sustain is sequential, and we will say so rather than selling two programmes.

A hard line on assessed work

Teaching, criteria explanation, research-question interrogation and written feedback on the student's own draft. No writing, completing or producing an Internal Assessment, Extended Essay, TOK essay or Personal Project. A provider in this market sells completed IAs; the student carries that risk, not the seller.

Dates only where they are sourced

Cambridge and Pearson milestones on this page come from the boards' own published material. No IB exam or results date appears, because none has been confirmed against the IB itself. A page that invents a date for an assessment calendar is worse than a page that admits the gap.

Delivery and coverage both disclosed

Lessons are one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; there are no home visits in the UAE and no premises in the country, since in-home tutoring runs only in India. Where a Higher Level subject has no specialist free, we give a realistic match time instead of placing a generalist.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Ain: your questions answered

Will one tutor cover both my children if one sits IGCSE and the other the IB Diploma?+

Occasionally, but it is rarely the best arrangement. The boards reward different work: IGCSE marking is largely mechanical and externally examined, while Diploma subjects add sustained reasoning and an individually produced internally assessed component marked against lettered criteria. Genuine fluency in both is a specialist position rather than a default. The arrangement that works better is two specialists in consecutive slots in the same evening, each with their own plan for their own child, which over live video involves no journey between the two and no compromise on specification match.

What actually gets harder between IGCSE and the IB Diploma?+

Two things, and neither is simply volume. The first is sustained reasoning: Diploma questions build across parts, present unfamiliar data to interpret, and carry evaluation marks that need a judgement rather than a fact. The second is internal assessment, where the student produces an individually marked piece of work against lettered criteria in the current subject guide, with no weekly deadline from a teacher. Command terms widen too, from describe, explain and calculate to include discuss, evaluate, justify and to what extent, and a well-organised description of a discuss question scores poorly.

Which Diploma subject is the biggest jump from IGCSE for an Al Ain student?+

Physics, in most cases. IGCSE Physics rewards recall and clean substitution into a formula, while Diploma Physics asks for graph interpretation, uncertainty handling and reasoning across several parts of one question, with Higher Level adding substantial content on top. Chemistry's jump sits in energetics, equilibrium and organic mechanisms. Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level is a large step unless the student has taken Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 or Pearson Further Pure 4PM1, which is the best available preparation and worth building externally if the school does not offer it.

When should a transition block between Year 11 and DP1 happen?+

Across the summer after the IGCSE papers and into the first term of DP1, which is when the gap is visible and still cheap to close. Eight to twelve sessions aimed at assumed knowledge for the chosen Higher Levels, the command terms that change, and the first internally assessed task planned rather than rushed. The alternative is the DP1 spring, when a student is carrying six subjects, the core, and a first internal assessment deadline at once, and repair work costs several times what prevention would have.

Where exactly is the line on Internal Assessment help for a DP1 student?+

Yes, within a clear line. A tutor may teach the skills the task assesses, explain the criteria and descriptors from the current subject guide, interrogate a research question before weeks are wasted on an unanswerable one, model an analysis on different data, read the student's own draft and say where a claim is unsupported, and hold a deadline schedule. A tutor may not write it, complete it, or edit it until the voice is no longer the student's. A provider in this market sells completed Internal Assessments, and the student who submits bought work carries the malpractice consequence.

How do we choose which child gets the tutoring budget?+

On evidence and on deadlines rather than on who seems more distressed. Look at marked papers for both and ask which loss pattern is costing the most grades relative to what it will take to fix: a command-term problem in Diploma Biology may be a six-session fix with a large payoff, while a two-year content gap in Chemistry is a term's work. Then weigh proximity to a deadline. A DP2 student months from the May session cannot wait; a Year 10 who is coping usually can, and should be revisited next term.

Is my child moving from MYP into IGCSE at a disadvantage?+

Differently prepared rather than behind. MYP students arrive strong on extended reasoning and on writing to criteria, and short on the mechanical accuracy and timed short-answer recall an IGCSE paper rewards. That is a change of register rather than a knowledge deficit, and three to five weeks of timed drilling usually closes it. The misdiagnosis to avoid is treating it as weakness: a student told they are struggling often turns out to have been well prepared for a different kind of test, and responds very quickly once the format is practised.

Does Al Ain have enough Diploma Programme places for a Higher Level science combination?+

Fewer than Abu Dhabi island, which has a real effect on choice. Al Ain's private-school set is smaller, so Diploma cohorts are small and Higher Level combinations can be limited, with a subject sometimes taught by one teacher and no departmental second opinion available. Some students commute or change school for a particular pairing. The planning advice is to establish in Year 10, not Year 11, whether the combination your child wants is available locally, because the IGCSE grades needed to make that case are earned before the question becomes urgent.

What does an IB Diploma tutor cost compared with an IGCSE tutor in Al Ain?+

Higher at the specialist end, because the pool is thinner. Published market bands put a qualified subject tutor online at roughly AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with IB, IGCSE and A Level specialists quoted at roughly AED 200 to AED 450 and premium named tutors as high as AED 650. In-home one-to-one runs roughly AED 180 to AED 500 with travel included. Those are market observations from October 2026 attributed to the providers who published them, not IB Gram prices; our rate follows a free trial lesson and a tutor match.

How do we schedule two tutoring sessions in one Al Ain evening?+

Work backwards from each child's actual arrival time and add thirty minutes for food. Central districts such as Al Jimi and Al Mutaredh usually sustain a 5pm and a 6.30pm slot. Hili, Zakher, Al Maqam and Al Yahar households, with longer bus routes, are generally better at 5.30pm and 7pm. The reason two consecutive sessions work at all over live video is that nobody travels between them, so the second starts when the first ends rather than when a tutor arrives.

Do the IGCSE and IB exam calendars clash for a household running both?+

They overlap in the spring, which is exactly why a household plan matters. Cambridge and Pearson both run a May/June series and a November series, and UAE schools sit the May IB session, so April and May are the pressure months for both children at once. This page publishes no specific IB date because none has been confirmed against the IB itself, so build the Diploma child's plan from the school's own internal deadline calendar and the coordinator's dates, and diarise the IGCSE child's entry deadlines in November.

Should my child take Additional Mathematics 0606 before the Diploma?+

If the school offers it and the student is aiming at Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, yes. It is the single best preparation available, because it introduces calculus notation, binomial expansion and trigonometric identities in a form the Diploma course assumes. The complication in Al Ain is supply: 0606 has the thinnest tutor pool of any IGCSE subject here, cohorts are very small, and school clinics for it are rare. If it is not offered, a focused block on the same content before DP1 achieves much of the same effect.

Are Arabic and Islamic Education relevant to a household on both boards?+

Yes, in two ways. Private schools in the UAE must teach Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies alongside their licensed curriculum, so both children carry them regardless of board, and that workload is real when planning tutoring hours. Second, on Ministry of Education British-track equivalency, Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects required at no less than E or grade 3, so they cannot be counted towards that total. Verify the current wording on moe.gov.ae before relying on it.

Does IB Gram send a tutor to our home in Al Ain for either board?+

No. There are no home visits anywhere in the UAE and no office, centre or branch in the country, because in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. Both children are taught one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. For a two-board household this is the practical advantage: two specialists, two consecutive slots, no journey between them, and a shortlist for each child drawn from everyone who has taught that specification rather than from whoever can reach your district by six.

What should we verify about any tutor before the first paid session?+

The MoHRE private tuition work permit, which is granted free of charge for two years under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and applied for through MoHRE's own service with a published two-working-day completion time. Then the specification: which board, which code, which level, and how recently. Then the commercial terms in writing: per hour or per session, what happens to a missed session, and whether the figure includes any tax the provider must charge, which should be confirmed with the provider and against the Federal Tax Authority rather than assumed.

How do we know the Diploma side is working when the next exam is a year away?+

Use the school's own assessment points and the internally assessed timeline as the evidence, not a feeling about engagement. In DP1 that means school tests, the first internal assessment proposal and draft, and marked past-paper questions against the published criteria. Ask for the annotated work from each session to be saved and sent, plus a short written note of what was covered and set. At the four-to-six-week review, compare two pieces of marked work directly. If the loss pattern has not changed, the plan should, not the student.

Tell us which of the two situations you are in

An IB IGCSE home tutor in Al Ain is usually the answer to one of two questions: how to get a student safely from IGCSE into the Diploma Programme, or how to support two children on two boards in one evening and one budget. Send both children's subjects, boards, levels and year groups, one recently marked paper each, and the time they actually walk through the door. We will come back with a diagnosis per child, a recommended order, and an honest view of what each needs, including the option that one of them needs nothing yet. The trial lesson is free, and lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
