IB Diploma Tutor in Al Ain

Hiring an IB Diploma tutor in Al Ain is a decision best made with the point arithmetic in front of you. Forty-two points come from six subjects, up to three more from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, and a set of published conditions can withhold the Diploma even from a student who clears twenty-four. This page works through that arithmetic, then the hours that actually move it. Lessons are one-to-one over live video at Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Al Ain

The Diploma is an arithmetic problem before it is a studying problem

Most Al Ain families arrive at the question of Diploma tutoring with a worry rather than a number. A report says a child is working at a five in two subjects and a four in a third, the school has mentioned predicted grades, and the total on the page does not obviously connect to the university offers being discussed at home. The most useful thing an IB Diploma tutor in Al Ain can do in the first conversation is turn the worry into arithmetic, because the Diploma is unusually transparent once the structure is visible.

Here is the structure. Six subjects, each graded one to seven, give a maximum of forty-two points. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are graded A to E and combine in a published matrix worth up to three further points. The maximum total is forty-five. The Diploma is awarded at twenty-four points or above, provided a set of further conditions is also met, and those conditions are where results are lost by students whose totals look adequate. A candidate can reach twenty-six points and still not be awarded the Diploma.

That matters in Al Ain specifically because the city's Diploma cohorts are small. Option blocks are tight, a subject may run with a handful of candidates, and a teacher may be covering three courses. None of that is a criticism of the schools; it is arithmetic about cohort size. What it means practically is that a student here has less room to switch subjects or levels mid-course than a student in a large Dubai cohort, so decisions made in the first term of Diploma year one carry further.

The timeline is the other half of the picture, and it runs in a direction parents do not expect. A meaningful share of the subject total is settled by internal assessment completed months before the written papers, and the Extended Essay is largely finished before the final year's teaching ends. By the time most families start looking for a tutor, part of the total has already been decided. The hours that move the most points are the ones nobody is asking for yet: the weeks when an internal assessment method is being chosen and when the Extended Essay research question is still negotiable.

What follows is the arithmetic in full. Where the points come from, the published conditions that can withhold a Diploma, how the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay matrix works, how to read a target total backwards into per-paper targets, the bilingual Diploma, what Al Ain's small cohorts do to Higher Level choices, what a two-year plan costs at published market rates, and the retake and remark routes. Confirm every IB regulation with your school's coordinator or on the IB's own site; this page explains structure, it does not replace the official documents. Lessons are delivered one-to-one over live video, and IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Diploma is the page's subject, but two neighbours shape the decisions around it: the Career-related Programme and the courses route within the IB itself, and the International A Level alternative that several Al Ain schools offer instead.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects across six groups, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, with Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Higher Level courses carry more teaching hours and an extra paper in most subjects. Internal assessment contributes typically twenty to thirty per cent of a subject grade, with the balance from written papers sat in a single session.

Al Ain's Diploma cohorts are small, so option blocks are the binding constraint rather than the student's preferences. A combination such as Higher Level Physics with Higher Level Economics may be unavailable locally not because the school objects but because both run in the same block. Ask each Al Ain school for its current block structure before the Year 11 decision, not after.

DP-COURSESAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme courses

Individual Diploma subjects taken for certificates without attempting the full Diploma. A student takes the same courses, sits the same papers and receives the same one-to-seven grades, but does not need to satisfy the award conditions. Universities treat certificates less consistently than the full Diploma, so this route needs checking against specific entry requirements rather than assumed.

This route occasionally rescues an Al Ain student whose school cannot timetable a required subject combination, or for whom a compulsory second language is a genuine barrier. It is worth discussing with the coordinator early rather than in the final year, because moving onto a courses route late can waste a year of teaching.

A-LEVELAges 16-18 · Years 12-13

International A Level

Three or four subjects, no compulsory core, longer and narrower papers. Suits a student with a settled direction and one weak area that the Diploma would not allow them to drop, typically a second language. The Ministry of Education's British-track equivalency route is written around Advanced and Advanced Subsidiary Levels, which some UAE families weigh heavily.

Several Al Ain campuses run A Levels rather than the Diploma, so the choice between the two usually involves changing school in this city. That makes drive time a real variable alongside the academic fit, particularly for households in Zakher or Al Yahar where the run into the centre is already long.

MYPAges 11-16 · Before the Diploma

Middle Years Programme

The IB's middle-school framework, assessed against four criteria per subject group rather than by examination. Its habits transfer directly to Diploma internal assessment and the Extended Essay, which is why students arriving from a strong MYP background usually handle Diploma coursework better than those from a purely examination-based system.

Several Al Ain schools run a middle-school programme and then move students onto international GCSE papers rather than continuing to MYP Year 5. A student arriving at the Diploma from Extended IGCSE rather than MYP Year 5 typically needs more support on the first internal assessment and less on examination technique.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Below are the Diploma courses Al Ain families most often ask for, with the component that decides the grade in each. Where a subject's internal assessment carries a large share, that is the component tuition should start with.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

The course that accounts for most Al Ain enquiries. Higher Level uses differentiation inside the first term and assumes rapid algebraic manipulation. Marks go on unjustified steps and on calculator work presented without the setup. The mathematical exploration is twenty per cent of the grade and is frequently started too late to be assessed well.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling and statistics led, with heavier technology use and a gentler algebraic load. It is the right course for a large share of students who are placed in Analysis and Approaches by default, and the honest conversation about which course fits is worth having before the first term rather than in January.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Energetics, equilibrium and extended organic mechanisms are where Higher Level separates from Standard. The commonest error is a sign convention rather than a calculation. The scientific investigation is marked on method quality and uncertainty treatment, not on whether the result came out neatly.

Physics

HL and SL

Mechanics with calculus-adjacent reasoning, plus uncertainty propagation that most students meet for the first time here. Graph gradients quoted without units and conclusions drawn without reference to the uncertainty range are the recurring losses in both papers and internal assessment.

Biology

HL and SL

Content volume is the challenge rather than conceptual difficulty, and command terms decide more marks here than in any other science. Outline, explain, discuss and evaluate carry different tariffs, and writing a discussion for an outline question costs time without earning credit.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen textual analysis, comparative essay work and an individual oral built around a global issue. Students with strong IGCSE First Language grades often underperform in the first paper, because directed writing and unseen analysis of a writer's choices are different skills with different success criteria.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagram accuracy decides more marks than prose quality. The internal assessment requires three commentaries on published news articles within strict word limits, and the commonest fault is an article too old or too broad to support the required analysis. Higher Level adds a quantitative paper that rewards practice rather than reading.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study papers reward applying a named tool to the stimulus rather than describing the tool. The Higher Level pre-released case study rewards preparation begun months early, which is among the most efficient uses of tuition hours anywhere in the Diploma.

Theory of Knowledge

Core, graded A to E

An assessed essay on a prescribed title and an exhibition of three objects with commentaries. Students lose marks by writing about the topic rather than about how knowledge in that area is produced and justified. It feeds the core points, so an E here is a condition failure rather than a low score.

Extended Essay

Core, graded A to E

A four-thousand-word independent research essay in a chosen subject with a supervisor. The research question decides the achievable grade more than the writing does, which is why the most valuable supervision happens before any drafting. As with Theory of Knowledge, an E is a condition failure.

Arabic

Language B and ab initio

Mandatory alongside the international curriculum for the groups the regulator specifies, and separately examinable at Diploma level. Al Ain students sometimes move between first-language and acquisition streams between IGCSE and the Diploma, and the two are assessed against entirely different criteria.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Diploma support takes three shapes over two years, and the useful one changes as the course progresses. All three are delivered one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

Weekly subject support across two years

A fixed slot in one or two subjects, usually the Higher Level courses carrying the most risk, running alongside the school's scheme of work rather than ahead of it. The focus alternates between content and technique, and shifts decisively towards past papers from the start of the final two terms. Most Al Ain families start with one subject and add a second only if evidence justifies it.

  • One named course at a named level, matched to the student's subject guide
  • A written note after each session listing what was covered and set
  • Reviewed against marked school assessments, not on a monthly cycle

Internal assessment and core supervision blocks

Scheduled feedback points on the subject internal assessments, the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge, timed to the school's own internal deadlines rather than to ours. The tutor reads the student's own drafts, questions the method, and names the criterion the work is being marked against. These are the hours that move the most points per hour spent.

  • Research question and method questioned before any drafting begins
  • Feedback mapped to the published criteria, criterion by criterion
  • Every submitted word remains the student's own work

Final-term paper intensive

A block in the last ten to twelve weeks built entirely around timed past papers, worked in the order the student will sit them and marked against official mark schemes. Targets are set per paper rather than as one overall grade, because a Higher Level grade is a weighted sum of components and the components respond to different work.

  • Timed papers marked against the official mark scheme
  • A separate target for each component rather than one grade
  • Command-term drill, which is where most late marks are recovered

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Ain

01

Where the forty-five points actually come from

Six subjects, each graded one to seven, give forty-two points. Three subjects are taken at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, and both levels are graded on the same one-to-seven scale, so a seven at Standard Level is worth exactly as many points as a seven at Higher Level. That single fact changes a lot of planning conversations in Al Ain, because families frequently assume Higher Level grades count for more. They do not count for more in the total; they count differently in the award conditions and in university offers.

The remaining three points come from the core. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are each graded A to E, and the pair combines through a published matrix that awards nought to three points. The matrix is not symmetrical and it is not intuitive: two B grades award fewer points than an A paired with a B, and certain combinations award nothing at all while still satisfying the conditions. Those three points are frequently treated as a rounding error by students and they are the difference between a thirty-four and a thirty-seven offer.

Each subject grade is itself a weighted sum. Most Diploma subjects comprise two or three written papers plus an internal assessment worth roughly twenty to thirty per cent. The practical implication is that no subject grade is a single thing to be improved; it is three or four components that respond to different work. A student losing marks on Paper 1 multiple choice and a student losing marks on the internal assessment have nothing in common except the grade on the report.

The table lays out one worked profile, so the relationship between subject grades, core points and total is visible in a single place. The numbers are an illustration, not a prediction.

The conditions that can withhold a Diploma at twenty-six points

Twenty-four points is the floor for the Diploma, and it is a necessary condition rather than a sufficient one. The IB publishes a set of additional requirements that must all be satisfied, and a candidate who misses any one of them is not awarded the Diploma regardless of the total. This is the part of the system that produces the worst surprises in July, and it is almost never explained to parents at the start of the course.

The requirements concern the distribution of grades rather than their sum. There are minimum point totals from the Higher Level subjects and from the Standard Level subjects taken together. There are limits on how many low grades a candidate may hold, and a single grade one in any subject is disqualifying on its own. The Creativity, Activity, Service requirements must be completed. Neither Theory of Knowledge nor the Extended Essay may be graded E. And any finding of academic misconduct removes the award independently of everything else.

What this means for tutoring priorities is counter-intuitive but important. For a student in the middle of the range, the hour spent lifting a weak Standard Level subject from a three to a four can matter more than the hour spent lifting a strong subject from a six to a seven, because the first removes a condition risk while the second only adds one point. An Al Ain family planning a two-year budget should know which of the two situations their child is in, and the answer is readable from the report.

The table below sets out the published award requirements as a checklist. Confirm the current wording with your school's Diploma coordinator or on the IB's own site before relying on it; regulations are revised, and the coordinator holds the authoritative version for your child's session.

03

The core matrix, and why three points are worth more than they look

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are each graded A to E, and the pair is converted into nought to three points through a published matrix. Students treat the core as the part of the Diploma that does not count, because it has no subject grade attached, and that reading costs Al Ain candidates points every session. Three points is the gap between many conditional offers. It is also, hour for hour, the cheapest part of the Diploma to improve, because almost nobody competes for those marks seriously.

The Extended Essay is the more controllable of the two. Its achievable grade is decided largely by the research question, which is set long before any writing happens. A question too broad to answer in four thousand words, or one whose evidence cannot be obtained from Al Ain, caps the grade before the student has written a sentence. Supervision at the question stage, questioning scope and feasibility, is worth more than any amount of feedback on a finished draft. This is the clearest case in the whole Diploma of effort placed in the wrong month.

Theory of Knowledge is harder to coach and still responsive. The essay is written on a prescribed title and the failure mode is consistent: students write about the subject matter rather than about how knowledge in that area is produced, justified and contested. The exhibition requires three objects with commentaries connecting them to a prompt, and the commonest loss is an object chosen for interest rather than for the specific knowledge question it illuminates.

The matrix below is the published shape of the conversion. Treat it as an illustration of structure and confirm the version applying to your child's session with the coordinator, since the core's assessment model has been revised more than once.

Reading a target total backwards into per-paper targets

A target of thirty-eight points is not actionable. Nobody studies for thirty-eight. What is actionable is a target per subject, then per component within the subject, then a statement of which specific question types that component rewards. Working backwards in that way is the main thing a Diploma tutor should do in the first fortnight, and it is why the first session should involve more reading of the student's marked work than teaching.

The arithmetic is straightforward once the components are visible. If Chemistry at Higher Level comprises three papers and an internal assessment worth around twenty per cent, then a student sitting at a five with a weak internal assessment and solid papers has a different route to a six than a student with a strong internal assessment and a weak Paper 2. The first needs supervision on method and uncertainty; the second needs timed extended-response practice. A generic request for Chemistry tutoring produces the wrong one about half the time.

The second half of working backwards is the calendar. Internal assessments are completed long before the papers, the Extended Essay earlier still, and the school sets internal deadlines ahead of the IB's upload dates. Counting backwards from the examination session therefore produces a sequence in which the coursework work happens first and the paper work last, which is the opposite of how most families schedule tuition. They start with subject revision in year two and discover the coursework marks were settled in year one.

The table turns a point target into per-subject and per-component work. It is deliberately specific about what each move requires, because a target without a method attached is just a number on a fridge.

Al Ain's option blocks, and what a small cohort really costs

  • Ask which Higher Level subjects ran last session, and with how many candidates
  • Ask for the current option block structure in writing before Year 11 ends
  • Settle the mathematics course decision before year one, not during it
  • Raise unavailable subjects with the coordinator early; late fixes waste a year

Al Ain is 130 kilometres inland from the capital and its private-school set is considerably smaller than Abu Dhabi island's. For the Diploma, that translates into three concrete constraints. Option blocks are tight, so desirable subject combinations collide. Some subjects run with very small candidate numbers, which means a teacher may cover three courses and the depth of subject-specific support available inside the school is thinner. And the less common languages and Higher Level sciences are the first things to be unavailable.

None of that is a reflection on teaching quality, and it is not solved by changing school, because the next school has a similarly small cohort. What it does mean is that the Year 11 decision should include a specific question that few families think to ask: which subjects ran at Higher Level in the last session, and with how many candidates. A school that ran Higher Level Physics with four candidates last year may not run it at all this year, and a student who built a university plan around it discovers that in September.

The second practical consequence is that a student who finds themselves in the wrong mathematics course has less room to move than a Dubai student would. Switching from Analysis and Approaches to Applications and Interpretation partway through year one depends on there being a class to move into at a compatible time. Where there is not, the student continues in a course that does not fit, and that is a predictable source of grade-one and grade-two risk. The answer is to make the course decision properly before year one rather than to rely on being able to correct it.

Where the school cannot timetable a subject at all, two routes exist and both are worth raising with the coordinator early: taking the subject as a Diploma Programme course for a certificate alongside a reduced Diploma, or self-teaching with supervision, which is demanding and should not be entered into casually in a subject with an internal assessment component.

What a two-year Diploma plan costs at published market rates

Published UAE tutoring rates vary by a factor of ten and most pages competing for this search print no AED figure at all. The bands below come from providers' own published pricing and from Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table. They describe the market, not IB Gram's price list, and they are here so an Al Ain quote can be judged against something checkable.

Budget online tutoring from university students is advertised from roughly AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik from AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from roughly AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor online sits at AED 150 to 300, where Unitors publishes IB from AED 200 and IGCSE from AED 150. In-home one-to-one with travel runs roughly AED 180 to 500, with Bestimate at 180 to 350 and independent home tutors at 200 to 500. IB and IGCSE specialists run AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270, and premium named tutoring reaches AED 650, as BartyED publishes. Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are AED 240 to 600 budget, AED 600 to 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist examination-year support. Monthly packages in the market include AED 799 for eight online sessions.

Two years is where the arithmetic becomes real. A single weekly hour in one subject across both Diploma years, at the mid-market monthly estimate, is a materially different commitment from a ten-week intensive before the papers, and the two buy different things. The pattern that tends to produce the most points per dirham is uneven rather than steady: coursework supervision blocks in year one and early year two, where a small number of hours can move two or three points, then a concentrated paper intensive in the final term. A flat weekly hour for twenty-four months, with no coursework focus, is the commonest way Al Ain families spend more and gain less.

For context on household education spending, KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year under an economic incentives package. That is a Dubai measure and does not apply to Al Ain fees, but it is a useful reminder that school fees dominate the household education budget and tuition is the smaller, controllable line. IB Gram publishes no rate card here; the next step is a trial lesson at no charge once a tutor has been matched, then a quote against the actual course and level.

Remarks, retakes and the November route

  • Enquiry upon results is a marking review, not a second attempt, and the deadline is short
  • A November session exists as well as the May one UAE schools sit
  • Internal assessment marks usually carry forward on a retake; confirm with the coordinator
  • No IB dates are published here; check the IB's own site rather than a third party

Results arriving below expectation open three distinct routes, and they operate on different clocks. The first is a remark, properly called an enquiry upon results, requested through the school within a deadline set by the IB. It is a re-evaluation of marking rather than a second attempt, and it is most worth requesting where a component mark sits just below a boundary and is inconsistent with the student's other components in that subject. Your coordinator advises on whether a case exists; the deadline is short.

The second is a retake of individual subjects in a later session. The UAE sits the May session, and a November session also exists, so a candidate may retake in a session after the original attempt rather than waiting a full year. Retaking changes the planning question entirely: the student is no longer being taught a course, they are being prepared for specific components, often while already at university or on a gap year. Internal assessment marks usually carry forward, which is worth confirming with the coordinator, because it means the retake work is paper work.

The third route is to proceed without the full Diploma using subject certificates, where the university offer permits it. Universities treat certificates less consistently than the full Diploma, so this is a question for the admissions office concerned rather than for a school or a tutoring page. Al Ain families with local university plans are better served asking the institution directly, because published requirements change between cycles.

No specific IB session or results date appears on this page. The IB's own site blocks automated checking, which means any date published on a tutoring page is secondhand, and a parent planning travel or a retake entry around a date that turns out to be wrong has a real problem. Check ibo.org or your school's coordinator, and treat both as more reliable than any aggregated calendar.

08

Delivery, coursework limits and what is not claimed

  • Shared-screen work on the student's own marked scripts is the core of a session
  • Coverage limits are stated before booking, never after payment
  • Tutors teach and give feedback; no submitted word is ever theirs
  • No regulator, board or school endorses IB Gram, and nothing here implies one does

Lessons for UAE families are delivered one-to-one over live video, at Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; visiting tutors are a service available only in India. For Diploma work the format earns its place on the merits: a student's own marked Paper 2 script, the subject guide and the official mark scheme can all be on a shared screen at once, and the specialist on the other end may be the only person available anywhere who teaches that exact Higher Level option. In a city with small cohorts, that is the practical difference rather than a convenience argument.

Where Al Ain has a UAE-based specialist for the course, that is the first match offered, because shared school context and time zone are genuinely useful. Where no UAE-based specialist is free at the level needed, which happens most often in Higher Level sciences, Higher Level Computer Science and the less common languages, the match comes from the wider tutor pool teaching at Gulf Standard Time, and that is said before any lesson is booked. No competing page in this market discloses a coverage limit, which is not the same as not having one.

The line on coursework is firm and worth stating plainly, because this search returns providers who cross it. Internal assessments, the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay must be the student's own work. A tutor may teach the underlying content, question a method, read a draft the student wrote and point at the criterion it is being marked against, and help plan backwards from the school's deadlines. A tutor may not supply text, structure written for the student, or a finished piece. Academic misconduct removes the Diploma award independently of every point total on this page, which makes this the single most expensive corner a family could cut.

Finally, what is not claimed. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge International or Pearson, and there is no IB Gram office, centre or branch anywhere in the UAE. No grade, score or university place is promised by anyone here, no statistic appears without a named source, and no IB subject guide, past paper or mark scheme is distributed as a download. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit: the private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and is applied for through the Ministry's own service, with fines and penalties under the applicable laws for anyone tutoring without one.

Near United Arab Emirates University, so households often include academic staff with a clear view of what a local university entry profile actually asks for. Evening slots compete with campus commitments.

Falaj Hazza

South-west, with campuses running both the Diploma and A Levels within a short drive, so the Year 11 decision between qualifications is genuinely live in these households.

Zakher

Southern villa belt with long runs into the centre. A seven o'clock video slot works here where a visiting arrangement would collapse on the first week of heavy traffic.

Al Mutaredh

Older central district by the Al Ain Oasis. Families here frequently have a Diploma student at one campus and a younger child on IGCSE papers at another.

Al Muwaiji

Western and heavily Emirati, with high demand for Arabic alongside Diploma subjects. Two separate language streams in one household is common here.

Al Towayya

Near the hospital campus, where parental shift rotas shape the week. A fixed weekly online slot survives a rota change; a visiting arrangement does not.

Hili

Northern Al Ain near the Buraimi crossing, with some households crossing the border daily. An earlier fixed slot proves more reliable than a late one here.

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Ain

Al Ain campuses offering the Diploma

The city's IB World Schools and international campuses running the Diploma Programme. The set is small relative to Abu Dhabi island, which is the root cause of the tight option blocks described on this page. Ask each one how many candidates sat each Higher Level subject in the last session.

  • Brighton College Al Ain
  • Al Ain Academy
  • Liwa International School

Al Ain campuses on the A Level route

Schools where sixth form means Advanced Levels rather than the Diploma. For a family weighing the two qualifications in this city, the decision usually involves moving campus, so the comparison has to include drive time and sibling logistics alongside the academic fit.

  • Al Ain English Speaking School
  • Al Dhafra Private Schools
  • The International School of Choueifat, Al Ain
  • Our Own English High School, Al Ain

Where Al Ain Diploma leavers often apply locally

Al Ain is unusual among UAE cities in having a major national university within it, which shapes how local families read a point total. Entry requirements are published by each institution and revised, so check them directly rather than relying on a summary from a school or a tutoring page.

Schools and universities are named here as context for the Al Ain education system only. IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any of them, and none is a client.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the subject list with levels, and one marked script

Six subjects with Higher and Standard Level marked, plus one recent marked paper or internal assessment draft. The subject list shows where condition risk sits; the script shows which component is losing marks. Together they make the first conversation diagnostic rather than exploratory.

  2. 02

Work out the condition position before the point target

Check the Higher Level and Standard Level minimums and the low-grade limits against current working grades. A student at condition risk and a student chasing a higher offer need opposite priorities, and the report usually makes clear which one you are dealing with.

  3. 03

    Fix the coursework calendar first

Map the internal assessment deadlines, the Extended Essay checkpoints and the Theory of Knowledge dates from the school's own calendar, counted backwards. Those hours move the most points and they expire. Paper preparation can be scheduled around them; the reverse does not work.

  4. 04

Meet the matched tutor for a trial lesson at no charge

One introductory session once a tutor is matched to the named course and level, with nothing charged and no card needed to book it. The signal to watch for is whether the tutor reads the marked script and names a component, or begins teaching content without establishing where the marks went.

  5. 05

Review at assessment points, not on a calendar

Review after each marked school assessment, after the mock window and after each internal assessment feedback round. Reviewing monthly means reviewing at moments when nothing has been assessed, which produces impressions rather than evidence and keeps a wrong diagnosis alive for longer.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The arithmetic before the advice

Points, conditions and component weightings come first, because they determine which hour is worth buying. A target total with no per-component breakdown behind it produces effort in the wrong places and a plan nobody can check.

Condition risk treated as the priority it is

A single grade one, a missed Higher Level minimum or an E in the core withholds the Diploma whatever the total. Lifting the lowest grade usually matters more than lifting the highest, and that is the opposite of how most tuition is sold.

Coursework hours placed where they count

Internal assessment and the Extended Essay are settled long before the papers, and the research question decides more than the drafting does. Supervision at the question stage is the highest-return work available in the whole Diploma.

Al Ain's cohort size taken seriously

Tight option blocks, subjects running with a handful of candidates and thinner in-school subject depth are facts about a smaller city. They change what a student can correct mid-course, which is why decisions before year one carry more weight here.

Rates with sources attached

Every AED band is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it and kept separate from anything IB Gram charges. Three of the six pages competing in this market publish no price at all and two quote in a currency UAE families do not use.

A hard line on assessed work

Academic misconduct removes the award independently of any point total, so nothing a tutor contributes ever appears in a submitted piece. Teaching, questioning and criterion feedback on the student's own drafts is the whole of what is offered.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Ain: your questions answered

Where do the 45 Diploma points actually come from?+

Forty-two from six subjects, each graded one to seven, and up to three from the core. Three subjects are taken at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, and both are graded on the same scale, so a seven at Standard Level is worth the same points as a seven at Higher Level. The core points come from Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, each graded A to E, combined through a published matrix. Each subject grade is itself a weighted sum of two or three papers plus an internal assessment worth roughly twenty to thirty per cent.

What are the conditions that stop a Diploma being awarded at all?+

Twenty-four points is the floor, and several further requirements must all be met: minimum point totals from the Higher Level and Standard Level subjects, caps on the number of low grades, no grade one in any subject, completion of the Creativity, Activity, Service requirements, no E grade in Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay, and no finding of academic misconduct. A candidate can reach twenty-six points and still not be awarded the Diploma. Confirm the exact current wording with your school's coordinator, who holds the authoritative version for your child's session.

How are the three core points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge?+

Both are graded A to E and the pair converts to nought to three points through a published matrix. The matrix is not symmetrical: an A paired with a B awards more than two Bs, and some combinations award nothing while still satisfying the award conditions. An E in either is a condition failure regardless of the points. Students treat the core as the part that does not count, which is why those three points are available cheaply to anyone who takes the Extended Essay research question seriously a year in advance.

How many of the 45 points are decided before the written papers?+

A substantial share. Internal assessment carries roughly twenty to thirty per cent of most subject grades, and those pieces are completed and submitted months before the examination session. The Extended Essay is usually finished before the final year's teaching ends, and Theory of Knowledge earlier still. Added together, a meaningful part of the total is settled before the first paper is opened, which is why families who start tutoring in the final term find that some of the available points have already been allocated.

What does one grade boundary actually move in the Diploma total?+

One point, which sounds trivial and frequently is not. A single point moves a thirty-four to a thirty-five, and conditional offers are routinely set at specific totals. More importantly, where the boundary crossed is in a weak subject, it can also remove a condition risk, which is worth far more than a point. The practical move is to find which component in which subject sits closest to a boundary and work on that one, rather than spreading effort evenly across six subjects.

My child is sitting on 31 points - what is a realistic target?+

Thirty-four or thirty-five within a year is a reasonable working assumption if the gap is diagnosable, and the diagnosis matters more than the ambition. Two points from the core, if currently at one, are usually the cheapest. One grade in a subject where a single component is clearly behind is the next cheapest. A target that requires three subjects to rise at once in the final term is not a plan. No tutor can promise a particular total, and anyone offering one is selling something other than teaching.

Which Higher Level subjects are hardest to timetable in Al Ain?+

Higher Level sciences beyond the most popular one, Higher Level Computer Science, and the less common languages. The cause is cohort size rather than school policy: a subject attracting four candidates may not run at all, and two desirable Higher Level courses frequently sit in the same option block. Ask each Al Ain school which Higher Level subjects ran in the last session and with how many candidates, in writing, before the Year 11 decision. A university plan built on a subject that does not run is a serious problem to discover in September.

Do UAE universities look at the Diploma total or the Higher Level grades?+

Usually both, with subject-specific requirements attached, and the detail varies by institution and by programme. A medical or engineering pathway typically specifies Higher Level subjects and minimum grades within them as well as a total. Al Ain families have a major national university inside the city and several other institutions nearby, and each publishes its own requirements, which are revised between cycles. Ask the admissions office directly rather than relying on a school summary or a tutoring page, including on how subject certificates are treated.

How many Diploma subjects should a student get tutoring in at once?+

One or two, in almost every case. Three concurrent subjects usually means three hours a week on top of a Diploma workload that already includes coursework, and the result is less independent study rather than more support. The exception is a short, intense block in the final term where the work is timed papers rather than new content. Start with the subject carrying the most condition risk, verify from the next marked assessment that it has moved, and add a second only on that evidence.

What does Diploma tutoring cost in Al Ain for a two-year plan?+

Judge any quote against published market bands. Unitors publishes IB tutoring from AED 200 an hour and IGCSE from AED 150; TutorChase publishes AED 270; Bestimate's rate table puts specialists at AED 200 to 450 and above, with monthly estimates of AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist examination-year support at a weekly hour. Across two years the pattern matters more than the rate. Coursework supervision blocks plus a final-term paper intensive usually buys more points than a flat weekly hour sustained for twenty-four months.

Is it too late to start Diploma tutoring in the second year?+

Not too late to gain points, but the available points have changed. By the second year much of the internal assessment is submitted or near submission, and the Extended Essay may be finished, so the hours remaining are paper hours. That is still worth doing and can move two to four points across the subjects where timing and command terms are the losses. What cannot be recovered late is coursework quality, which is the honest reason to start supervision in year one rather than the second.

Can a November retake repair a low Diploma total?+

It can repair individual subject grades. The UAE sits the May session and a November session also exists, so a candidate can retake specific subjects in a later session rather than waiting a full year. Internal assessment marks usually carry forward, which should be confirmed with your coordinator, and that makes retake preparation almost entirely paper preparation. Before entering a retake, ask whether a remark is the better route: an enquiry upon results reviews the original marking and the deadline for requesting it is short.

What is a bilingual Diploma and is it worth aiming for in Al Ain?+

A bilingual Diploma is awarded where a candidate's subject combination meets the IB's published language conditions, broadly involving two languages studied as Language A or a Language A plus a subject from another group taught in a second language. In Al Ain, where many students have strong Arabic alongside English, it is more achievable than families realise and it signals genuine academic bilingualism to admissions offices. Whether it is worth engineering a subject choice around depends on the universities being targeted. Ask your coordinator which combinations at your school would satisfy the conditions.

What may a Diploma tutor do with coursework, and what is off limits?+

A tutor may teach the content, question a method or a research question, read a draft the student has written and name the criterion it is being marked against, explain what a criterion descriptor requires, and help schedule work backwards from the school's deadlines. A tutor may not supply text, write structure for the student, or hand over a finished piece. Academic misconduct removes the Diploma award regardless of the point total, so this is the most expensive possible shortcut. Every submitted word stays the student's own.

Is Theory of Knowledge support available alongside the six Diploma subjects?+

Yes, and it is frequently the most efficient hour in a plan, because almost nobody competes seriously for core marks. The work is structural rather than content-based: showing a student how to write about how knowledge in an area is produced and justified, rather than about the area itself, and helping choose exhibition objects that genuinely illuminate a prompt. The essay must be the student's own writing throughout. An E in Theory of Knowledge is a condition failure, so this is also risk management, not only point-chasing.

Start with the conditions, then the components

Before any tutoring decision, do two pieces of arithmetic. Check the award conditions against your child's current working grades, because a condition risk outranks a point target every time. Then break the weakest subject into its components and find out which one is actually losing the marks, since a grade is never a single thing to improve. Send us the subject list with levels, one marked script and the school's coursework deadlines, and we will start there. Lessons are one-to-one over live video at Gulf Standard Time; home visits are an India-only service and are not offered anywhere in the UAE. Confirm every IB regulation with your school's coordinator, who holds the version that applies to your child's session.
