IB Home Tutor in Al Muwaiji

An IB home tutor in Al Muwaiji is most useful when the conversation starts with the assessment itself: which criteria carry which marks, what each command term actually earns, and what the word limits are. IB Gram matches Al Ain Diploma families with subject specialists teaching one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, working from the published criteria rather than from a general sense that a subject is hard.

IB & IGCSE in Al Muwaiji

Start with the criteria, not with the subject

Al Muwaiji sits in the western part of Al Ain, close to Al Jimi and the old fort, in a city where the Diploma cohort is small enough that families often know every student in it. That has an upside — teachers are reachable, cohorts are tight — and a specific downside, which is that the number of adults locally who know the assessment criteria for a given Higher Level subject is very small indeed.

This page is built around those criteria, because they are where the marks are. Most Diploma tutoring conversations begin with a subject and a feeling: Chemistry is hard, the essay is going badly, maths used to be fine. The conversation that changes a grade begins somewhere else, with the published assessment instrument. How many marks does criterion C carry? What does the command term in this question stem actually require? Is the word limit a guideline or a limit? Those questions have exact answers, and students who know them write differently.

The International Baccalaureate is unusually transparent about this. Every internally assessed component has published criteria, each with a letter and a mark allocation, and every examination question uses a command term with a defined meaning. None of it is secret. What happens in practice is that students are told the criteria exist, are shown them once in a lesson, and then write as if they had never seen them. A tutor's most valuable half hour is often spent making a student mark their own draft against the criteria themselves.

IB Gram teaches UAE families one-to-one over live video and makes no home visits anywhere in the country; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. For Diploma work that format matters more than it might seem. Coursework coaching is a document-centred activity: both people need the same draft, the same criteria and the same annotations on screen. That is easier on a shared screen than across a table, and it leaves a record the student can return to.

What follows is a page of specifics. How the 45 points are built and where the core fits. The internal assessment criteria for the subjects Al Ain families most often ask about, by letter and mark. The command terms, with what each one earns. The word and page limits as a single reference table, which almost no competing page publishes. Where Diploma students in this emirate actually lose marks. And a clear statement of what a tutor may and may not do with work the student must submit as their own.

One note on dates. We publish no IB examination or results dates on these pages, because the board's own site cannot be verified by automated checking and a wrong date is something a parent acts on. UAE Diploma candidates sit the May session; for the exact calendar, ask your school's Diploma coordinator.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The Diploma is a two-year structure with a core bolted through the middle, and what a tutor works on changes sharply between its stages. These are the four that generate enquiries from Al Ain.

Pre-DPAges 15-16 · Year 11 or MYP 5

The year before the Diploma

Subject choice, and the groundwork that makes the first year survivable. Algebraic fluency, extended writing at Diploma length, and the ability to read a source critically. A short block here is the cheapest useful intervention in the whole programme, and almost nobody buys it because nothing is urgent yet.

In Al Ain the Diploma cohort is small and option blocks are correspondingly tight. A student should check which Higher Level subjects actually run in a given year before building a university plan on one, because a subject offered on paper is not always offered in practice when numbers are low.

DP1Ages 16-17 · DP1

Diploma Year 1

Content at pace in six subjects, plus the start of the core. The high-value work here is getting the coursework foundations right: a research question that can carry an Extended Essay, an investigation with enough depth for the top criterion band, and a Theory of Knowledge exhibition that engages with a real knowledge question.

The spring of DP1 is the cheapest moment in the Diploma to buy help, because the content is still being taught and nothing has become a deadline. Families in this city who use that window rarely generate the emergency enquiries that fill the following spring.

DP2Ages 17-18 · DP2

Diploma Year 2

Internal deadlines, syllabus completion and university applications in the same months. The work is sequencing and triage as much as teaching: clear the coursework, protect the subjects nearest a grade boundary, and leave something alone deliberately rather than spreading too thin across six subjects.

Al Ain schools set their own internal deadlines for coursework components, and they generally fall earlier than students expect. Ask for the published internal calendar in the autumn of DP2 rather than discovering it in January.

CoreAcross both Diploma years

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Up to three points sit in the combination of these two components, and a failing condition in either can cost the diploma outright. Both are coachable in the legitimate sense: the thinking is taught, the criteria are explained, the reasoning is questioned, and the student writes every word themselves.

The core is the part of the Diploma most often neglected by families budgeting for tutoring, and the part where a small, early intervention has the largest effect. Testing whether a research question can sustain four thousand words takes one session and saves a term.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The list below names the assessed components rather than the topics, because the components are what carry the marks. Al Ain requests concentrate in the sciences, mathematics and English, with the core close behind.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Two papers at Standard Level, three at Higher, plus the Exploration at twenty per cent. Paper 1 is sat without a calculator. The Exploration is marked out of 20 across five criteria, with use of mathematics carrying six of them, and topic depth decides that ceiling before writing starts.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Calculator permitted throughout, with heavier statistics and modelling. Marks are lost by producing a number and not interpreting it in context, which is exactly what the mark scheme asks for. Calculator fluency is a syllabus requirement rather than a convenience.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Papers plus the scientific investigation, marked out of 24 across research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, each carrying six marks. Students lose evaluation marks by listing limitations without explaining their effect on the conclusion.

Physics

HL and SL

The same investigation structure as the other sciences, with uncertainty and error analysis the recurring loss point. Paper questions reward algebraic manipulation of unfamiliar relationships, which is a mathematics problem more often than a physics one.

Biology

HL and SL

Heaviest content load of the three sciences and the one where command terms matter most. A question asking students to analyse and receiving a description earns nothing, however accurate the description is.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Externally assessed papers plus the individual oral, with the Higher Level essay as an additional component. Marks go on how a text works rather than what it says, and the oral is the least rehearsed component in most students' Diploma.

Economics

HL and SL

A portfolio of three commentaries, each written to a word limit and based on a different section of the syllabus and a different source. Diagram accuracy and explicit evaluation carry the marks; definition-heavy writing plateaus quickly.

Business Management

HL and SL

Written papers plus an internally assessed project, with the Higher Level version requiring primary research. Students lose marks by describing a business rather than applying a tool to a specific decision it faces.

History

HL and SL

A historical investigation marked out of 25, with a source evaluation section that students consistently under-weight. Essay structure under time pressure is the transferable skill, and it is trainable in a small number of sessions.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Compulsory core

The TOK exhibition and essay carry their own word limits; the Extended Essay is marked out of 34 across five criteria, with critical thinking carrying twelve of them. Together these two components are worth up to three points of the Diploma total.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Diploma work divides into three formats that should be bought separately, because they do different jobs and the coursework one has a strict boundary around it.

Subject teaching, weekly

One session a week in a single subject, following the school's teaching order. Suited to a student whose content understanding is genuinely behind rather than whose technique is weak. Reviewed each half term against school assessments rather than against the tutor's own material.

  • Tracks the school scheme of work, including anything missed
  • Short homework set and marked at the next session
  • Command-term practice built into every topic
  • Half-term review with a stop-or-continue recommendation

Coursework coaching, scoped in sessions

Three or four sessions on one component: an investigation, a commentary portfolio, a historical investigation, an Extended Essay or a TOK exhibition. The criteria are taught by letter and mark, the reasoning is questioned, and feedback is given on a draft the student has written. The tutor writes nothing.

  • Criteria taught explicitly, with mark allocations named
  • Topic or question tested for viability before writing begins
  • Feedback delivered as questions rather than as edits
  • Fixed session count agreed before the work starts

Examination technique block

A finite run focused on papers rather than content: command terms, timing, question selection, and the extended-response structures each subject rewards. Opens with a marked paper and closes before study leave, with no new content introduced in the final third.

  • Begins with a timed paper marked against criteria
  • Paper 3 treated separately at Higher Level where it exists
  • Weekly timed section with annotated feedback
  • Ends while there is still time to use what it taught

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Muwaiji

01

What an IB home tutor in Al Muwaiji actually works on

  • Work is aimed at an assessed component, not at a subject in general
  • The criteria and the last marked piece of work come first
  • Document-centred coaching suits a shared screen well
  • Component matching matters more than proximity in a small cohort

An IB home tutor in Al Muwaiji, as families here use the phrase, is a Diploma subject specialist working one-to-one with one student. IB Gram provides that over live video to Al Ain households and makes no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tuition is a service we run only in India. For Diploma work the online format is a good fit rather than a compromise, because so much of the work is document-centred: a draft, a set of criteria and a page of annotations that both people can see and the student can return to.

What the tutor works on is narrower than the subject. In a two-year programme with six subjects and a three-part core, nobody has the hours to be generally better at everything, and the students who do well are the ones whose effort is pointed at specific assessed components. So the opening question is never how the subject is going. It is which component is costing marks, what the criteria for it say, and what the student's own last marked piece of work shows.

That is a different service from reteaching the syllabus, and it is faster. A Higher Level science student who writes evaluations that list limitations without explaining their effect on the conclusion is losing marks in a known criterion, and fixing it takes two sessions of writing and annotating rather than a term of content revision. A student who answers an analysis question with a description is losing marks on command terms, which is trainable in a single focused session with real question stems.

In a small Diploma cohort there is one further advantage worth naming. Because the local market is thin, Al Ain students are often taught by generalists who are good teachers but have not marked that component. Choosing by component rather than by proximity removes the single biggest cause of wasted terms in this city.

02

How the 45 points are actually built

Families frequently plan tutoring without a clear picture of where the points come from, which leads to effort being spent on the wrong things. The structure is simple enough to hold in your head and worth doing so before deciding what to fund.

Six subjects are each graded from 1 to 7, which accounts for forty-two points. The remaining three come from the combination of Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, awarded on a matrix of the two grades together. There are also conditions attached to the award of the diploma itself, including a minimum total and requirements about failing conditions in individual components, which your school's coordinator will explain in terms of your child's specific subject set.

The practical consequence is that the core is worth more attention than most families give it. Three points is the difference between offers at many universities, and the core is also where a failing condition can cost a diploma outright rather than merely reducing a total. A student who has quietly deferred the Extended Essay is carrying a larger risk than one who is a grade behind in a subject.

The second consequence concerns triage in the second year. Where resources are limited — and in a two-year programme time is always the binding resource — the rational order is to protect the components where a small amount of work produces a whole point. That is usually a subject sitting just below a boundary, or a core component in danger of a low grade, rather than the subject the student finds hardest.

03

Internal assessment criteria by letter, with mark allocations

This is the material competing pages leave out, and it is the single most useful thing a Diploma family can have in front of them. Every internally assessed component has published criteria, each labelled with a letter and carrying a stated number of marks. A student who knows that one criterion carries six marks and another carries three writes differently, and better.

Two patterns appear across subjects. First, the criteria that reward reflection, evaluation and engagement are consistently the ones students treat as decoration — an introduction saying the topic is interesting, a conclusion saying it was. Those criteria want evidence inside the work: a method rejected and the reason given, a result that surprised the student and what they did about it. Second, the criteria that reward communication are lost to small things: unlabelled axes, undefined variables, inconsistent notation, missing citations.

The third pattern is the most expensive. Several criteria have a ceiling set by a decision made before any writing: whether the topic or research question carries enough depth for the level. An Exploration on a trivial piece of mathematics caps the use-of-mathematics criterion no matter how well it is written, and an Extended Essay question that cannot sustain four thousand words of argument caps critical thinking. Those are one-session conversations that should happen weeks before a draft exists.

The table below covers the components Al Ain families ask about most often. Confirm current criteria and mark allocations against the subject guide your child's school holds, since the board revises specifications on a cycle and we do not reproduce the guides themselves.

04

Command terms, and what each one earns

  • State and outline want brevity, not justification
  • Explain wants a mechanism; describe does not
  • Analyse wants parts and relationships, not a summary
  • Evaluate, discuss and to what extent require a defended judgement

Command terms are the most mechanical source of lost marks in the whole Diploma, and the easiest to fix. The board defines them, the subject guides list them, and examiners mark against them. A student who treats describe, explain, analyse and evaluate as synonyms for write about this will lose marks in every subject, every paper, consistently.

The hierarchy is worth learning explicitly rather than absorbing by osmosis. State and outline want brevity: a fact, a step, no justification. Describe wants detail without reasons. Explain wants the mechanism — because, therefore, which causes. Analyse wants the parts broken out and their relationships examined. Evaluate and discuss want judgement supported by both sides, and to what extent wants a position taken and defended with a limit acknowledged.

The expensive mistakes run in both directions. Writing a paragraph where state wanted a sentence wastes time that the paper does not give back. Writing a description where evaluate was asked earns nothing at all, however accurate it is. In a timed paper the second error is usually worth several marks per paper, and across six subjects that is a significant fraction of a points total.

The way to train this is not to read the list. It is to take fifteen real question stems from the student's own subject, cover the content, and have the student state what the command term requires and roughly how many marks it implies. Twenty minutes of that, repeated twice, changes how a student reads a paper for the rest of the Diploma.

05

Word and page limits, in one place

Limits are enforced, and students treat them as advisory until something goes wrong. The practical effect of exceeding one varies by component, but it is never favourable: examiners may stop reading at the limit, which means the conclusion a student spent a week on is simply not marked.

The commonly cited figures are worth having in one list rather than hunting for them across six subject guides. The Extended Essay has an upper limit of four thousand words. The Theory of Knowledge essay runs to sixteen hundred, and the exhibition commentary to nine hundred and fifty. Economics commentaries run to eight hundred words each. The Higher Level essay in English A has its own range, and mathematics Explorations have a recommended page length rather than a strict word count.

Writing to a limit is a skill in itself, and it is one of the most transferable things a tutor can teach. The method is not cutting at the end; it is planning to a budget at the start, allocating words per section against the criteria so that the twelve-mark criterion gets the space and the four-mark one does not. Students who plan that way rarely need to cut anything.

Confirm every figure against the current subject guide your school holds, because the board revises specifications on a cycle. We do not reproduce or supply board guides, past papers, mark schemes or grade-boundary tables; they belong to the International Baccalaureate and are available through your school and the board's own site.

Where Diploma students in this emirate lose marks

  • Sciences: limitations named but their effect not explained
  • Mathematics: method lines not written, so credit is unclaimed
  • Humanities: analysis answered with description, evaluation left implicit
  • Core: deferred until it collides with subject coursework

Patterns repeat across marked work from students in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, and almost none of them are about intelligence or effort. They are about the gap between what a student produced and what the criteria asked for, which is exactly the gap a tutor can close quickly.

The largest in the sciences is evaluation. Students identify limitations accurately and then stop, without explaining how each one would have affected the result or the confidence in the conclusion. The criterion wants the second half and routinely does not get it. In mathematics the largest is unclaimed method credit: a student who can do the question writes three lines where the scheme rewards six, makes one slip, and loses everything on a question they understood.

In the humanities and languages the pattern is command terms and structure. An analysis question answered with a description, an evaluation left implicit because the student assumed the examiner would infer it, and extended responses with no visible argument shape. All three are training problems rather than knowledge problems, and all three respond to annotated practice within a few sessions.

In the core the pattern is timing rather than quality. Students defer the Extended Essay and the TOK components because they have no weekly homework pressure attached, then meet both in the same term as their subject coursework. The students who are comfortable in the second year are not the strongest ones; they are the ones who cleared the core early.

07

Past-paper work that counts, and what we will not supply

  • Timed, closed-book, marked against criteria, then rewritten
  • One properly processed paper a fortnight beats a weekly skim
  • Paper 3 must be rehearsed whole, including recovery from an error
  • We cite and link board material; we never reproduce or supply it

Diploma past-paper practice goes wrong in a specific way. A student works through questions untimed with notes open, checks answers against a solution, and finishes feeling reassured. That activity rehearses none of the conditions that produce the mark, and in a programme with six subjects it also consumes time that the student does not have.

Practice that counts has four features. It is timed. It is attempted without notes. It is marked against criteria rather than against an answer, so the student sees where the band boundaries sat. And it is followed by rewriting two or three lost-mark responses in full, which is where the learning actually happens and which almost everyone omits. One paper a fortnight treated that way beats one a week skimmed.

At Higher Level the component most often neglected is Paper 3 where a subject has one, because it feels unpractisable in isolation. It is practisable, but only as a whole paper, and with explicit coaching on what to do when an early part has not resolved cleanly. Students who have never rehearsed carrying an unresolved result forward lose the back half of a paper to a single early error.

On materials, our position is firm. We do not reproduce, supply or host International Baccalaureate syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes, grade-boundary tables or subject guides. Those belong to the board and reach students through their school and the board's own channels. A provider advertising a download library of them is advertising a copyright problem, and for unreleased material a malpractice exposure.

08

The line on every assessed component

  • The student writes every word of every submitted component
  • A tutor teaches criteria, tests viability and questions reasoning
  • Feedback is given as questions on the student's own draft
  • Ask any Diploma tutor what they will refuse to do

The Diploma asks students to submit a great deal of work, and this region's tutoring market contains providers who will produce it for them. One has advertised completed Internal Assessments for sale outright. That is academic malpractice, and the consequence falls on the student, who risks their diploma rather than their money.

The defensible boundary is specific and we state it before any coursework support begins. A tutor may teach the skill the component assesses. A tutor may explain the published criteria and what their command words mean. A tutor may test whether a topic or research question can carry the work. A tutor may question the student about their own reasoning and give feedback on a draft the student has written. A tutor does not write any part of the work, does not rewrite the student's sentences into better prose, and does not supply content for submission.

That boundary is not merely a rule to be observed grudgingly; it is where the value is. The intervention that most reliably improves a coursework grade is early and legitimate: checking that a research question is answerable, that an investigation has enough depth for the top band, that the data a student plans to collect will actually support a conclusion. All of that happens before writing, which is precisely when families do not think to ask for help.

It follows that a tutor who is vague about this is a risk rather than a bargain. Ask directly what they will refuse to do. The answer tells you more about a Diploma tutor than any qualification on their profile.

Where we tutor

Al Muwaiji and the Al Ain districts around it

Al Ain's short journeys change the tutoring logistics in a way the bigger cities do not share. These are the districts in the conversation, with what each means for scheduling Diploma work.

Al Muwaiji

Settled western streets near the fort, with several schools inside a short drive. Early arrivals mean a Diploma student here can genuinely take a 4.30pm slot, which matters because coursework sessions need concentration rather than leftovers.

Al Jimi

Immediately east, sharing much of the same school catchment. Families often coordinate lifts between the two districts, which makes a fixed weekly slot more durable than one depending on a single car.

Al Khabisi

A short run away with its own schools. Relevant to Al Muwaiji families who kept a place after moving, which happens frequently in a city this compact.

Hili

North of the district, near the archaeological park. Short journeys and the widest choice of session times in the city, which suits a Diploma student juggling six subjects and the core.

Al Towayya and Asharej

East towards the hospital and university districts, and the direction many Diploma students head for undergraduate study later. Slightly longer runs, still short by Gulf standards.

Al Maqam and Zakher

South of the centre, with longer journeys and a thinner local supply of subject specialists. Online delivery closes more of a gap here than in the central districts.

Falaj Hazza and Al Mutaredh

Central areas with reasonable school access. For these families the constraint is almost never the commute; it is whether anybody locally teaches the Higher Level subject in question.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the component, not the subject

Tell us which assessed component is costing marks — an investigation, a commentary, Paper 3, the Extended Essay — and send the last marked piece of work for it. That turns a general worry into something a specialist can act on in the first session.

  2. 02

Free trial on your child's own work

The trial runs on the actual draft or paper, with the published criteria open. You should see the student mark their own work against the criteria at least once during it, because that is the habit the whole arrangement is trying to build.

  3. 03

A scoped plan with the boundary stated

The plan names the sessions, the criteria being targeted and the finish date. Where coursework is involved it also states in writing what the tutor will not do with the draft, before any work begins rather than when a deadline is close.

  4. 04

    Weekly sessions with annotated feedback

Fixed slot in Gulf Standard Time over live video, with the draft or paper on a shared screen. Feedback arrives as annotations and questions rather than as rewritten text, and the student keeps the record to work from between sessions.

  5. 05

    Review against criteria, not impressions

At the midpoint the student's work is re-marked against the same criteria and compared band by band. The review recommends continuing, changing or stopping, and stopping is a real option rather than a formality.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Criteria taught by letter and mark

A student who knows that one criterion carries twelve marks and another four writes differently. Publishing and teaching those allocations is standard practice here and absent from almost every page competing for this search.

Component matching, not subject matching

A tutor who has marked the component is worth more than one who knows the subject broadly. In a small Diploma cohort that distinction is the main reason terms get wasted, and it is the one thing proximity cannot fix.

Viability checked before writing

The highest-value coursework help is testing whether a topic or research question can reach the top band at all. It takes one session, it happens weeks before a draft exists, and almost nobody asks for it.

A boundary stated in writing

What a tutor will refuse to do with a draft is set out before the work starts. This market contains providers selling completed Internal Assessments; the risk in that transaction sits entirely with the student.

No board material reproduced

Subject guides, past papers, mark schemes and grade boundaries belong to the International Baccalaureate. We cite and link them and point families to their school's coordinator rather than hosting copies.

No dates we cannot verify

We publish no IB examination or results dates, because the board's site cannot be checked automatically and a wrong date is something a parent acts on. UAE candidates sit the May session; your coordinator holds the calendar.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Muwaiji: your questions answered

How is a Diploma total of 45 points assembled, component by component?+

Six subjects are graded from 1 to 7, giving up to forty-two points, and the remaining three come from the combination of Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, awarded on a matrix of those two grades together. Creativity, Activity, Service carries no points but is a completion requirement. There are also conditions attached to the award of the diploma itself, including a minimum total and rules about low grades in individual components, which your school's coordinator will explain for your child's specific subject set.

Which internal assessment criteria carry the most marks?+

It varies by component, which is why knowing the allocation matters. The mathematics Exploration is marked out of 20, with use of mathematics carrying six and presentation and communication four each. The current science investigation is marked out of 24 across four criteria of six marks each. The Extended Essay is marked out of 34, with critical thinking carrying twelve of them. Confirm the current figures against the subject guide your school holds, since the board revises specifications on a cycle.

What is the difference between describe, explain and analyse in an IB question?+

They are defined command terms with different expectations. Describe wants detail without reasons. Explain wants a mechanism: because, therefore, which causes. Analyse wants the parts broken out and the relationships between them examined. Writing a description where analyse was asked earns nothing however accurate it is, and writing a paragraph where state wanted a sentence wastes time the paper does not return. Twenty minutes practising with real question stems from your child's own subject changes how they read every paper afterwards.

Does the Extended Essay word limit really matter?+

Yes. The commonly cited upper limit is four thousand words and examiners may simply stop reading at it, which means a conclusion the student spent a week on is not marked at all. The way to avoid trouble is not cutting at the end but budgeting words by criterion at the start, so that the twelve-mark critical thinking criterion gets the space and the four-mark presentation criterion does not. Students who plan that way rarely need to cut anything substantial.

Does IB Gram send a Diploma tutor to a home in Al Muwaiji?+

No. We make no home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. Teaching for Al Ain Diploma families is one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time. For coursework coaching that is genuinely well suited to the format, because the work is document-centred: the draft, the criteria and the annotations sit on a shared screen, and the student keeps the record to work from between sessions.

Exactly which parts of an Internal Assessment may a tutor touch?+

Teach the skill it assesses, explain the published criteria and their command words, test whether the topic carries enough depth for the top band, question the student about their own reasoning, and give feedback on a draft the student has written. What a tutor does not do is write any part of it, rewrite sentences, or supply content for submission. We state that before the work begins. This market includes providers selling completed Internal Assessments, and the risk in that transaction falls on your child.

My child is strong in a science but loses marks on the investigation. Why?+

Almost always the evaluation criterion. Students identify limitations accurately and then stop, without explaining how each would have affected the result or the confidence in the conclusion. The criterion wants that second half and routinely does not get it. The fix is two sessions of writing and annotating evaluation paragraphs against the published descriptors, not more content revision. Research design is the other common loss, usually because the controlled variables were decided after the data was collected rather than before.

When should a Diploma student in Al Ain start the Extended Essay properly?+

Earlier than most do, because the research question decides the ceiling. The single most valuable session is the one that tests whether a proposed question can sustain four thousand words of argument and whether the sources actually exist — and that conversation is worth having in the first year, long before a draft. Students who defer the core until the second year meet it in the same term as their subject coursework, which is why the comfortable students in DP2 are usually the ones who cleared it early rather than the strongest ones.

Does paying for Theory of Knowledge coaching change a Diploma total?+

It can be, because up to three points sit in the combination of Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay and a low grade can create a failing condition for the diploma. The component is coachable in the legitimate sense: the criteria are explained, the knowledge claims are questioned, and the student writes every word. Two or three sessions on structure and on narrowing an over-broad essay title tend to produce more movement than the same spend in a subject the student already passes comfortably.

How should a DP2 student decide which subjects to fund help in?+

By proximity to a boundary, not by difficulty. The rational order is to protect components where a small amount of work converts into a whole point: a subject sitting just below a grade boundary, or a core component at risk of a low grade. Spreading a handful of sessions across three struggling subjects in the spring of the second year reliably produces no visible change anywhere. A tutor who accepts all three without discussing priority is taking an order rather than planning.

Can a single tutor take on two of my Al Muwaiji child's Diploma subjects?+

Sometimes, where the subjects share a skill — the mathematics inside physics or economics, or argument structure across two humanities. Where the request is for two separate content specialisms, two tutors is usually the honest answer and we will say so. The exception worth noting is the core: a tutor coaching Theory of Knowledge or the Extended Essay is working on thinking and structure rather than subject content, so that can sit alongside a subject tutor without duplication.

Why does this page not give the IB examination dates?+

Because we have not been able to verify them from the International Baccalaureate directly. The board's site blocks automated checking, secondary sources circulate dates that disagree, and a wrong examination date is the one error on a page like this that a parent will actually act on. UAE Diploma candidates sit the May session. For the exact dates, and for your school's internal coursework deadlines, ask the Diploma coordinator, who holds the current calendar for your child's cohort.

Are Higher Level specialists available for a small Al Ain cohort?+

Through a screen, usually yes; locally, often no. That asymmetry is the practical argument for online delivery in a city this size. The exception is genuinely scarce combinations — a particular Higher Level option at a particular hour — where we tell you at the first conversation rather than placing a generalist. You then choose between a different time with the right specialist, a wait with a date attached, or a tutor whose location is disclosed before the trial lesson.

Can we get past papers and mark schemes from IB Gram?+

No, and you should be wary of anybody offering them. Subject guides, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the International Baccalaureate and reach students through their school and the board's own channels. We cite and link them rather than reproducing or hosting copies, because copying is a copyright problem and, for unreleased material, a malpractice exposure. Your school's Diploma coordinator can tell you what your child is entitled to access and how.

Send the criteria and the last marked piece of work

Name the component that is costing marks, send the most recent marked version of it, and tell us the subject and level. We will match a specialist who has worked with that component, run a free trial lesson with the published criteria open beside the draft, and state in writing what the tutor will and will not do with your child's work. Teaching runs one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time for Diploma families in Al Muwaiji, Al Jimi and across Al Ain.
