IB DP Physics HL Tutor in Ajman

Most families looking for an IB DP physics HL tutor in Ajman already hold the evidence that would diagnose the problem: a marked Paper 2, an investigation draft with four criterion letters written on it, and a report that moved the wrong way. This page is about reading that evidence first and buying second. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, every session returns marked work, and the first lesson is free.

  • Every session returns a marked script with mark-scheme points named
  • Investigation drafts read against the four published criteria
  • A six-week review run on the same evidence as the first diagnosis
  • Delivered live online; IB Gram runs no home visits in the UAE

What the paperwork already in your house will tell you

Physics at Higher Level is the Diploma subject where a parent's impression and the evidence most often disagree. A student who talks confidently about physics, enjoys the lessons and does the reading can be losing a third of the available marks for reasons that have nothing to do with how much physics they know. Conversely, a student who says they do not understand any of it is sometimes losing marks to pacing and arithmetic, which is a much smaller problem than the sentence suggests. Neither situation can be diagnosed from a conversation.

Three documents settle it, and most households already have all three. The first is a marked Paper 2, with the examiner's or teacher's marks on it. The second is the most recent draft of the scientific investigation, ideally with criterion feedback written on it. The third is the sequence of the last two or three reports, read for direction rather than for the grade. Together they distinguish between four quite different problems: content gaps, technique failures, mathematics weakness, and a coursework component being neglected.

That distinction matters because the four need different work and different amounts of money. A content gap in one theme is four to six sessions. A technique failure in extended response is a habit built over about six weeks of marked writing. A mathematics weakness underneath the physics is a separate repair and often the real story. A neglected investigation is twenty per cent of the grade sitting unclaimed, recoverable with two short supervision blocks and no new physics at all.

The marks themselves are distributed in a way that rewards this kind of audit. At Higher Level, Paper 1 carries thirty-six per cent across multiple choice and data analysis, Paper 2 carries forty-four per cent in structured and extended-response questions, and the scientific investigation carries twenty per cent for twenty-four marks across four criteria. Confirm those weightings against the subject guide your child's coordinator issues, since guides change between cycles. The point stands regardless: a fifth of the grade is written at home over months with feedback permitted, and it is the part most often left until last.

The Ajman context is practical. The emirate's private schools are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education, local Diploma provision is small, and a large share of Higher Level physics students here are enrolled in Sharjah or Dubai and home late. Laboratory access varies between schools and is the one thing online tutoring genuinely cannot substitute for, which is worth stating plainly rather than talking around. Everything else in this subject - scripts, drafts, derivations, graphs - is work on a shared screen, which is why the distance of a tutor is the least useful criterion for choosing one.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Higher Level Physics is a 240-hour course, and the useful evidence changes as it progresses: early on it is homework and class tests, later it is marked papers and investigation drafts. The stages below describe where Ajman families actually arrive, and what can be read at each point.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

The current IB Physics guide is organised into five themes: space, time and motion; the particulate nature of matter; wave behaviour; fields; and nuclear and quantum physics. Higher Level extensions sit inside each theme rather than at the end of the course. Assessment is Paper 1, split into multiple choice and data analysis, Paper 2 of structured and extended-response questions, and the scientific investigation.

Because Ajman's Diploma provision is concentrated in a single continuum school, many Higher Level physics students resident here are enrolled across the border in Sharjah or Dubai. Their internal deadlines, mock calendar and investigation submission date belong to that school, and the first document a tutor should ask for is that school's written deadline list.

DP1Ages 16-17 · Year 12

First Diploma year

The year when the evidence is thinnest and the most valuable work is preventative. Mechanics and the mathematics underneath it are laid down here, and a student who leaves the first year with weak algebraic rearrangement and poor graph work will meet that gap in every later theme. The investigation design also belongs in this year in most schools, which makes it the cheapest time to get it right.

Students entering a Diploma from British or Indian curriculum schools in Ajman and Sharjah usually arrive with solid factual physics and little experience of being asked to justify a method. That is a technique gap rather than a knowledge one, and it is much cheaper to address in the first year than in the revision term.

DP2Ages 17-19 · Year 13

Second Diploma year

Where the evidence becomes abundant: mocks, marked past papers, a full investigation draft and the final report. By this point the pattern on a script is stable and readable in one session. Work here is diagnostic and targeted - whole papers under timing, marked against the published scheme, with a running record of the specific failure types rather than a general revision plan.

The second Diploma year in the northern emirates collides with long commutes and a dense internal-assessment calendar across four or five subjects. Weekend mornings hold better than weekday evenings for the ninety-minute blocks that timed physics papers need, and the investigation tends to be the component that slips when everything else is due.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme Sciences

MYP Sciences builds investigative habits and a different set of criteria from the Diploma's. The transferable parts are experimental design and the practice of evaluating a method rather than reporting a result. The gap that matters later is mathematical: MYP physics rarely demands the algebraic fluency that Higher Level Diploma physics assumes from the first week.

Ajman Academy runs the IB continuum locally, so a student moving from MYP into the Diploma usually stays in one building and one assessment culture. Students arriving from elsewhere at Year 11 face a sharper change, and the usual shortfall is in graph work and rearrangement rather than in physics content.

PRE-DPAges 15-16 · Year 11

IGCSE physics into Higher Level Diploma

An IGCSE physics background covers much of the factual content and almost none of the demand for justification, uncertainty treatment or extended written reasoning. Students arrive able to state a law and unable to explain why a graph's gradient means what it means. A short bridge on uncertainties, graph analysis and algebraic rearrangement is worth more than revisiting content they already hold.

This is the most common entry route into Higher Level physics for Ajman families, since the local sector is largely British and Indian curriculum. A summer block on the mathematics underneath the physics prevents the single most expensive problem in the first Diploma year.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Higher Level Physics is five themes, a set of experimental and mathematical tools, and the scientific investigation. The list below follows how a marked script separates them, with what each part is examined on and the evidence that it is or is not working.

Kinematics and dynamics

HL and SL

Motion graphs, equations of uniformly accelerated motion, Newton's laws, momentum and impulse. The evidence of trouble is rarely a wrong law; it is a free-body diagram that was never drawn, so forces are omitted and a correct method is applied to an incomplete situation.

Work, energy and power

HL and SL

Energy transfers, conservation arguments, efficiency and power. Scripts show this going wrong as an accounting error: energy appearing or vanishing between lines because the system boundary was never stated. Writing the boundary down converts a guess into a method.

Rotational motion and circular dynamics

HL

Angular quantities, torque, moment of inertia, angular momentum and rolling bodies. A Higher Level extension with no IGCSE precursor, so it is new rather than hard. Marked scripts show it either secure or blank, which makes it a diagnosable and quickly repairable gap.

Thermal physics and the particulate model

HL and SL

Temperature, internal energy, specific heat, latent heat, the gas laws and the kinetic model. Higher Level adds deeper treatment of thermodynamic reasoning. Latent heat questions are where arithmetic slips cluster, usually from mixing units of mass partway through a calculation.

Waves, superposition and interference

HL and SL

Wave characteristics, reflection, refraction, diffraction, standing waves, the Doppler effect and interference. Higher Level deepens interference and diffraction treatment. The recurring loss is an explanation that describes what happens without identifying the path difference or phase relationship that causes it.

Fields: gravitational and electric

HL and SL

Field strength and potential, orbital motion, electric fields, potential difference and capacitance at Higher Level. The hardest conceptual area in the course for most candidates, because field strength and potential are routinely conflated and the sign conventions are unforgiving.

Electricity, circuits and electromagnetism

HL and SL

Current, resistance, circuit analysis, electromotive force and internal resistance, magnetic fields, induction and alternating current at Higher Level. Internal resistance questions separate a Higher Level cohort more reliably than any other single circuit topic.

Nuclear and quantum physics

HL and SL

Radioactive decay, binding energy, fission and fusion, the photoelectric effect, wave-particle duality and, at Higher Level, deeper quantum and nuclear treatment. Heavily examined and often taught last, so a thin pass through it is visible in a mock as a cluster of near-misses.

Uncertainties and error propagation

HL and SL

Absolute, fractional and percentage uncertainty, propagation through calculations, uncertainty in gradients and intercepts. Examined on Paper 1B and assessed in the investigation, and the single most reliable source of recoverable marks in the subject for a student who has never been taught it properly.

Graph work and data analysis

HL and SL

Linearising a relationship, plotting with error bars, drawing maximum and minimum gradient lines, and extracting a physical quantity from a gradient or intercept. Paper 1B is built on this, and it is drillable, which makes it the fastest measurable improvement available in a marked-work programme.

The mathematics underneath the physics

HL and SL

Algebraic rearrangement, indices, logarithms, trigonometry, small-angle approximations and basic calculus reasoning. Not a separate syllabus topic, and frequently the actual cause of a Higher Level physics problem. A student who cannot rearrange confidently loses marks in every theme and appears to have a physics difficulty.

The scientific investigation

HL and SL

An individual investigation worth twenty per cent of the grade, assessed on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation for six marks each. The word ceiling is 3,000. Most of the mark is decided by whether the chosen question can actually generate data with a measurable relationship in it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Each mode below produces a different kind of evidence, which is the point of separating them. A family should be able to say what the next six weeks will leave behind on paper, and a provider who cannot answer that is selling an hour rather than a result.

Weekly one-to-one, ninety minutes

Ninety minutes rather than sixty, because a Higher Level physics session that teaches content and also marks a timed question needs the time. The division is content, then a timed question attempted alone, then marking together against the published scheme. What it leaves behind each week is one marked script and one line added to the record of recurring failures.

  • One marked script produced every session, kept in a shared folder
  • A running record of the student's recurring failure types, not a topic list
  • Timed questions on earlier themes so revision runs continuously
  • A fixed evening set around the real return time from school

Investigation supervision block

Two short blocks, one at design and one at draft stage. The design block decides most of the twenty-four marks, because a question that cannot generate a measurable relationship produces a report with nothing to analyse. The draft block reads what the student has written against the four criteria and names the band for each. No data, text or analysis is supplied.

  • Research design tested for whether a measurable relationship exists
  • Uncertainty treatment planned before data collection, not after
  • Draft feedback given criterion by criterion with the band named
  • Every version kept, which is also the honest record of authorship

Data analysis and uncertainty block

A short focused block on Paper 1B and the analysis half of the investigation: linearising relationships, plotting with error bars, maximum and minimum gradients, propagating uncertainty through a calculation and extracting a quantity from a gradient. Drillable, heavily examined, and the fastest measurable improvement available in this subject.

  • Uncertainty propagation taught as a procedure and then drilled
  • Linearisation practised on unfamiliar relationships, not memorised cases
  • Error bars and gradient lines drawn to the standard the scheme expects
  • Before-and-after evidence from two marked Paper 1B sections

Mock review intensive

A short block built entirely on a returned mock. The paper is re-sat under timing where appropriate, then dismantled question by question into the four failure categories: content, technique, mathematics and pacing. The output is a written plan with a count of marks attached to each category, which tells a family what is actually worth buying next.

  • Lost marks counted by cause rather than by topic
  • Pacing measured: where the time went and what was left unattempted
  • The mathematics component separated out and named if it is the real issue
  • A written plan with marks attached to each category of loss

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Ajman

Reading a marked Paper 2: what the ticks do not tell you

A returned Paper 2 with a mark on the front is the most under-used document in a Diploma physics household. Parents read the total, students read the grade boundary, and nobody reads the distribution of the losses. That distribution is the diagnosis. Four marks lost on a single long question is a different problem from four marks lost one at a time across eight questions, and the two need completely different work, but the front page shows the same number either way.

The patterns are recognisable once you know what to look for. Marks lost at the start of long questions and nowhere else suggests a reading problem: the student is not extracting what the stem supplied. Marks lost at the end of long questions suggests pacing, or a dropped thread where a later part depended on an earlier result. Marks scattered one at a time across the whole paper usually means units, significant figures or a missing explanatory sentence, which is a habit rather than a knowledge gap. A whole question left blank or abandoned is a content gap in one theme, which is the cheapest of all to fix.

There is a fifth pattern which is the most commonly misread. A student loses marks on questions across several unrelated themes, and all of the lost marks sit at the point where the physics turns into algebra. That is not a physics problem. It is a mathematics problem wearing a physics uniform, and buying physics tuition for it produces a term of frustration on both sides. It shows up most clearly in questions requiring rearrangement before substitution, and it is worth checking before anything else is bought.

The table below converts those patterns into actions. It is written from marked scripts rather than from a syllabus, and the final column is the honest answer to the question families ask first, which is how long before anything changes.

02

Paper 1A and Paper 1B: two different papers in one booklet

Paper 1 at Higher Level contains two components that have almost nothing in common. Paper 1A is multiple choice across the whole syllabus. Paper 1B is a set of data-analysis questions built on experimental material. Together they carry thirty-six per cent of the grade. Students revise for them as one thing and should not, because the skills are unrelated and the failure modes are opposite: 1A punishes thin coverage and slow recall, while 1B punishes never having been taught uncertainty and graph analysis properly.

Paper 1A is a pacing exercise as much as a knowledge test. Forty questions at Higher Level in the allotted time leaves little room for deliberation, and the students who struggle are usually those who treat each item as a problem to be solved from first principles rather than recognised. The evidence of improvement is clean and quick to measure: the number attempted in a fixed period, and the ratio of changed answers that moved from right to wrong. Both are recordable, and both move within a few weeks of deliberate practice.

Paper 1B is the more interesting half, because it is where a large number of recoverable marks sit. Linearising a relationship so that a graph can be drawn, plotting with error bars, drawing maximum and minimum gradient lines, extracting a physical quantity from a gradient or intercept, and propagating uncertainty through a calculation are procedures. They are not insights. A student who has been taught them properly can do them on unfamiliar material; a student who has not will lose nearly all of these marks regardless of how well they understand the physics involved.

This is the strongest argument for an evidence-led programme. Uncertainty and graph work are drillable, heavily examined and assessed again inside the investigation, so a few focused sessions produce measurable movement in two places at once. When a family asks what the first six weeks should buy, this is frequently the honest answer, and the before-and-after evidence is two marked Paper 1B sections rather than an impression.

03

The scientific investigation, criterion by criterion, read from a draft

The investigation is twenty per cent of a Higher Level physics grade and twenty-four marks across four criteria: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each. It is written over months, with feedback permitted, and it is therefore the most controllable part of the grade. It is also the part most often left until the term it is due, by which point the decisions that determined the mark were taken long ago.

Research design carries the most consequence despite being worth the same six marks as the others. A question that cannot generate a measurable relationship - too few data points, a variable that cannot be controlled, a range too narrow for a trend to appear - produces a report in which data analysis has nothing to analyse, the conclusion has nothing to conclude and the evaluation has only the obvious to say. All four criteria suffer from one decision, and no amount of drafting repairs it. This is why the design block is the one worth buying first.

Data analysis is where the uncertainty work from Paper 1B reappears. Raw data processed without uncertainty, graphs plotted without error bars, a gradient taken without maximum and minimum lines: each of those is a visible band reduction. The criterion rewards appropriate processing and a clear presentation of what the data shows, and it is marked on what is actually on the page rather than on what the student understood. Conclusion rewards an interpretation that is justified by the data and related to accepted physics, including a proper comparison with a literature value where one exists.

Evaluation is the criterion most commonly thrown away. It does not reward listing sources of error in a generic paragraph. It rewards identifying the specific weaknesses of this method, judging their impact on the result, and proposing realistic improvements that would address them. A student who writes that human reaction time was a limitation has said something true and generic; a student who estimates its size and shows what it does to the gradient has written the evaluation the criterion is looking for.

On authorship, the boundary is firm and worth stating. A tutor may discuss the question, explain what each criterion rewards, advise on whether a design will produce usable data, and read a draft the student has written. A tutor may not supply data, produce the analysis, write any part of the report, or hand over a worked graph. Work that is not the candidate's own is a malpractice matter for the IB and the consequence falls on the student.

What moving a 4 to a 6 actually requires in Higher Level Physics

  • A neglected investigation is the cheapest available improvement and needs no new physics
  • Uncertainty and graph work pay in two components at once
  • A single-theme content gap is four to six sessions and visible immediately
  • A mathematics weakness underneath is the expensive case and improves everything when fixed
  • No tutor can guarantee a grade; evidence of movement is what can reasonably be expected

Families reasonably want to know what a grade jump costs in hours. The honest answer is that it depends entirely on which of the four problems is in play, and that two of the four are much cheaper than families expect while one is more expensive. Setting that out plainly is more useful than any promise, and no tutor can guarantee a grade in any case.

The cheapest case is a neglected investigation. Twenty per cent of the grade written at home with feedback permitted, currently scoring in the lower bands because the design was weak or the uncertainty work absent. Two supervision blocks and the student's own rewriting can move that substantially, and it requires no new physics at all. A student whose papers are genuinely at a 5 and whose investigation is at a 3 is not a 5 student; they are a student with an unclaimed fifth of a grade.

The second cheapest is the data-analysis and uncertainty cluster, because the same procedures are examined on Paper 1B and assessed inside the investigation. Four to six focused sessions on linearisation, error bars, gradient uncertainty and propagation show up in two components at once. Third is a single-theme content gap, which is four to six sessions and visible on the next paper covering that theme.

The expensive case is the mathematics underneath. A student who cannot rearrange confidently, who is unsure with indices and logarithms, and who does not trust their trigonometry is losing marks in every theme simultaneously. Repairing that is a separate programme of perhaps eight to twelve sessions, it feels like going backwards while it happens, and it improves everything at once when it lands. Families who recognise this early save a great deal; families who buy physics tuition for it spend a term discovering the diagnosis.

What should be refused in all four cases is a promise. No tutor can guarantee a grade or a score improvement, and any provider offering one should be treated with real scepticism. What can reasonably be promised is evidence: a marked script every week, criterion bands on successive drafts, and a six-week review conducted on the same documents as the first diagnosis. If those exist and nothing has moved, the right conclusion may be a different tutor, and a provider worth paying will say so.

05

The five themes, and where Higher Level scripts fall apart in each

The current Physics guide is organised into five themes rather than a list of topics, with Higher Level extension content embedded in each rather than appended at the end. That structure matters for revision, because a student who is weak in the shared material of a theme will be weak in its Higher Level extension too, and treating the extension as a separate body of work to be learned late is the most common planning error in this subject.

Space, time and motion carries mechanics, and its Higher Level extension includes rotational dynamics and angular momentum, which has no school-level precursor and is consequently either secure or blank on a script. Fields is the theme that separates a Higher Level cohort most sharply, because field strength and potential are conceptually distinct and routinely conflated, and the sign conventions are unforgiving of a casual approach. Capacitance and induction sit here too, and internal resistance questions in the electrical material are a reliable discriminator.

The particulate nature of matter holds thermal physics and the gas laws, where losses are mostly arithmetic rather than conceptual, usually from inconsistent units of mass or temperature partway through a calculation. Wave behaviour rewards explanations that name the mechanism - path difference, phase relationship, superposition - rather than describing the observed outcome, and scripts that describe without naming lose the explanation marks every time. Nuclear and quantum physics is heavily examined, frequently taught last, and a thin pass through it shows in a mock as a cluster of near-misses.

The practical consequence for a programme is that themes should be audited honestly rather than revised evenly. Mark each theme as secure, shaky or unmet, including its Higher Level extension separately, and spend the available sessions on the unmet entries. Students resist this because revising secure material feels productive and revising unmet material feels uncomfortable. The marked scripts, however, keep pointing at the unmet ones.

06

The mathematics underneath Higher Level Physics

Higher Level Physics assumes a level of mathematical fluency that it never teaches and rarely states. Algebraic rearrangement before substitution, confident work with indices and standard form, logarithms for decay and intensity relationships, trigonometry including component resolution, small-angle approximations, and the ability to read a gradient as a rate are all expected from early in the first year. A student who is shaky on any of them will find physics difficult in a way that looks like not understanding physics.

The diagnostic is straightforward and takes one session. Give the student a handful of questions where the physics is trivial and the algebra is not - rearrange for a quantity buried in a denominator, take logarithms of both sides of a power relationship, resolve a vector at an awkward angle, convert between units with an index change. If the physics questions were being lost at exactly these steps and these isolated exercises are also difficult, the diagnosis is settled and the programme should change.

What follows is uncomfortable for a few weeks. Repairing mathematical fluency means working on material that feels beneath the student, at a moment when a physics examination is approaching, and both student and parent tend to want to get back to physics. Pushing through is almost always right, because the gain is not confined to one theme: every theme contains algebra, so the repair raises marks across the whole paper rather than in one section of it.

There is a useful side effect worth mentioning. A student taking Higher Level physics is almost always taking a mathematics course too, and the repair improves that grade at the same time. For an Ajman family deciding where to spend a limited budget, that is a genuine double return, and it is the opposite of the conclusion most families reach when a physics grade falls, which is to buy more physics.

07

Laboratory access, practical skills and what online work can honestly evidence

This is the point where an honest page differs from a marketing one. Physics has a practical component embedded in the course and assessed through the scientific investigation, and the actual handling of apparatus cannot be done over a video link. A student who has never set up a circuit, never used a micrometer, never seen a signal generator, is missing something real, and online tutoring does not supply it. Laboratory provision varies between schools in Ajman and Sharjah, and it is a fair question to ask a school directly before a student commits to two Higher Level sciences.

What can be done remotely is a longer list than families expect, and it covers most of where the marks actually are. Experimental design can be worked through completely: variables, control, range, number of trials, how uncertainty will be estimated, whether a trend will be visible. Data analysis is entirely remote work and is where most investigation marks sit. Evaluation is reasoning about a method, not performing it. And the physics itself - derivations, explanations, graph work, past papers - is screen work in which annotating the same page together is better than sitting side by side.

There is also a practical route that families underuse. The investigation does not require exotic apparatus, and a well-designed experiment using everyday equipment at home, planned properly in a session and then carried out by the student, frequently produces better data than a rushed afternoon in a shared laboratory. Timing a pendulum, measuring terminal velocity in a liquid, tracking cooling curves, measuring resistance against length: all have produced strong investigations, and all can be designed remotely and executed by the student alone.

IB Gram delivers tutoring for UAE families one-to-one over live video. It does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service offered only in India. For this subject, the honest framing is that online delivery covers the analysis, the design reasoning and the entire examined physics, and does not cover apparatus handling, which belongs to the school. Stating the limit is more useful than claiming there is not one.

08

Academic honesty, permits, and the evidence trail that protects a candidate

  • A kept folder of drafts and marked work is the authorship record if one is ever needed
  • A tutor teaches, explains criteria and reads drafts; the report stays the student's own
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid two years under Resolution No. 710 of 2023
  • No fine schedule is published, so treat any quoted amount as unverified
  • A permit holder may not tutor students affiliated with their own school

An evidence-led programme has a second benefit beyond diagnosis. Keeping every draft, every marked script and every piece of feedback in a shared folder produces, as a by-product, a complete record of how the student's own work developed. If a question is ever raised about authorship, that record is the answer. Families do not usually think about this until it matters, and by then the folder either exists or it does not.

The boundary itself is not complicated. A tutor may teach physics, explain what a criterion rewards, discuss whether an investigation design will produce usable data, read a draft the student has written and give feedback against the published criteria. A tutor may not supply data, produce the analysis, write any part of the report, or hand over a worked solution to be submitted. Work that is not the candidate's own is a malpractice matter for the IB and the consequence falls on the student rather than on the person who sold the service. Some operators in this market sell completed internal assessments outright; that is the thing to walk away from at any price.

On licensing, the UAE position is clear and worth knowing. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Tutoring without a permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no schedule of amounts has been published, any figure quoted as fact should be treated as unverified.

The permit's code of conduct bars a holder from tutoring students affiliated with their own school, which answers the question many families ask quietly about paying their child's own physics teacher. In Abu Dhabi emirate, ADEK's professional-ethics rules place a comparable restriction on private and charter school staff. For an Ajman household whose child is schooled in Sharjah or Dubai, the practical rule is simply that the tutor should not be employed by that school, and a provider who offers that arrangement is offering something the rules do not permit.

Where we tutor

Ajman districts and the practical conditions a physics session needs

A physics session needs three things the household controls: a desk with room for a script and a calculator, a quiet ninety minutes, and a connection that holds while a graph is being annotated. The notes below cover where each of those tends to be the binding constraint.

Al Nuaimiya

Apartment living with shared study space, so the binding constraint is quiet rather than time. Marked-paper review needs the student able to concentrate for a full ninety minutes, which in practice means the latest slot the household can support rather than the earliest.

Al Rawda

Villa housing where a dedicated desk is usually available and a printed script can be laid out beside the screen. Households here often run two Higher Level sciences for one student, and the evidence folder for each needs keeping separately or the review loses its value.

Al Mowaihat

Newer villas with long bus routes towards Sharjah and returns after 16:30. A 19:00 start survives the term; anything earlier is rescheduled until it quietly stops, and an interrupted programme produces no six-week evidence to review.

Ajman Corniche and Al Rumaila

Central districts with short school runs, so these are the households most able to take an early-evening slot. That matters for physics specifically, because timed paper work wants a student who has not already spent ninety minutes on a bus.

Al Jurf

Mixed residential and industrial with the longest internal journeys for parents working in Dubai. Weekend mornings carry more of the load, which suits full-paper practice better than a weekday evening does in any case.

Al Helio and Al Rashidiya

Established areas with good access to the Sharjah crossing and, frequently, siblings at schools in two different emirates. A single shared calendar matters more than it sounds, because two schools' mock weeks rarely coincide.

Emirates City and Al Alia

High-rise towers where connection quality varies between buildings and floors. Annotating a graph live is the core activity in a physics session, and it is worth testing that from the actual study room during the free lesson.

Al Zorah and Al Yasmeen

Newer low-density developments with many families who arrived part-way through the Diploma. A transferring Higher Level student needs two schools' investigation deadlines reconciled and any existing draft read before new physics is taught.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Ajman

Ajman

Ajman's private schools are supervised by the federal Ministry of Education, which u.ae identifies as the body supervising private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah; there is no emirate-level authority equivalent to KHDA or ADEK. Diploma provision here is concentrated in one continuum school and the rest of the local sector is largely British and Indian curriculum, which is why many Higher Level physics students resident in Ajman sit in another emirate's classroom.

Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah, within commuting distance

Sharjah's private schools are regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority and Ras Al Khaimah's by its Department of Knowledge, and both approve tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods as well as inspecting. Laboratory provision varies between these campuses, which is the one factor a family should ask about directly when a student intends to take two Higher Level sciences.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Send the three documents

A marked Paper 2, the most recent investigation draft with any criterion feedback on it, and the last two or three reports read for direction. Those three distinguish between a content gap, a technique failure, a mathematics weakness and a neglected coursework component, which is the whole of the diagnosis.

  2. 02

Free trial spent counting, not teaching

One lesson at no cost and no card details, used to sort the lost marks on that paper by cause rather than by topic and to read the investigation draft against the four criteria. It ends with a count, a named category, and one question from the paper worked properly and marked.

  3. 03

A written diagnosis with marks attached

A short note saying how many marks sit in each category of loss and what the next six weeks will address. Attaching numbers to the categories is what lets a family decide between the cheap repairs and the expensive one, rather than buying a general programme and hoping.

  4. 04

A fixed ninety-minute slot and a shared folder

One evening a week set around the actual return time from a Sharjah or Dubai school run, with a shared folder holding every marked script and every investigation draft. The folder makes progress visible without anyone asking for a report, and it is the authorship record if one is ever needed.

  5. 05

Six-week review on the same evidence

The review compares a marked question and a Paper 1B section from week six against those from the trial, on the same criteria, plus the current investigation draft against the previous one. If nothing has moved on that evidence, the right answer may be a different tutor, and saying so is part of the job.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Diagnosis before purchase

A content gap, a technique failure, a mathematics weakness and a neglected investigation all look identical on a report card and need completely different work. Sorting the lost marks by cause on the student's own script costs one free session and frequently changes what the family thought they were buying.

Marked work every week, kept

Each session returns the student's own writing marked against the published scheme, stored in a shared folder. That is the only evidence a parent can read directly, the only basis for a six-week review, and the authorship record if a question about the investigation is ever raised.

The investigation treated as twenty per cent

A fifth of the grade is written at home over months with feedback permitted, and it is the part most often left until last. Supervision concentrates on research design, because a question that cannot generate a measurable relationship damages all four criteria at once and cannot be rescued in a draft.

Uncertainty and graph work drilled, because they pay twice

Linearisation, error bars, gradient uncertainty and propagation are examined on Paper 1B and assessed again inside the investigation. A few focused sessions therefore produce measurable movement in two components, which makes them the usual honest answer to what the first six weeks should buy.

The limits of online delivery stated plainly

Apparatus handling belongs to the school and cannot be done over a video link, and this page says so rather than claiming otherwise. Design reasoning, data analysis, evaluation and all the examined physics are screen work, which is most of where the marks are.

Independent of every school named

IB Gram is a tutor-matching platform with no affiliation to, endorsement from or formal connection with any school, group or examination board. Schools appear here as context for an emirate whose own Diploma provision is small, which is the only honest reason to name them.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Ajman: your questions answered

What should I send a physics tutor before the first session?+

Three documents, and nothing else. A marked Paper 2 with the marks visible on it, the most recent draft of the scientific investigation with any criterion feedback written on it, and the last two or three reports read for direction rather than for the grade. Those three distinguish between a content gap in one theme, a technique failure, a mathematics weakness underneath the physics, and a neglected coursework component worth a fifth of the grade. A conversation cannot distinguish between them, and a report card hides all four.

How much of a Higher Level Physics grade comes from each component?+

Paper 1, which contains multiple choice and data analysis, carries thirty-six per cent at Higher Level. Paper 2, with structured and extended-response questions, carries forty-four per cent. The scientific investigation carries twenty per cent and is marked out of twenty-four across four criteria. Confirm the weightings for your child's cohort against the subject guide their coordinator issues, since guides are revised between cycles. The useful consequence is that a fifth of the grade is written at home over months with feedback permitted.

My son loses marks across every topic but only where the algebra starts. What is that?+

A mathematics problem wearing a physics uniform, and it is the single most commonly misdiagnosed pattern in this subject. The test takes one session: give him questions where the physics is trivial and the algebra is not - rearranging for a quantity in a denominator, taking logarithms of a power relationship, resolving a vector at an awkward angle. If those are also difficult, buying physics tuition will produce a frustrating term. Repairing rearrangement, indices, logarithms and trigonometry takes eight to twelve sessions and raises marks in every theme at once.

Is there still a third paper in IB Physics at Higher Level?+

Under the current guide the assessment is Paper 1, split into a multiple-choice section and a data-analysis section, Paper 2 of structured and extended-response questions, and the internally assessed scientific investigation. Families who studied under an earlier structure, or who read older revision material, sometimes expect a separate options paper and plan revision around content that is no longer examined separately. Check the structure for your child's cohort with their coordinator, because that is the authoritative source and it changes between cycles.

Which part of Physics HL gives back the most marks for the least time?+

Uncertainty and graph analysis, because they are examined on Paper 1B and assessed again inside the scientific investigation. Linearising a relationship, plotting with error bars, drawing maximum and minimum gradient lines, extracting a quantity from a gradient, and propagating uncertainty through a calculation are procedures rather than insights, which means they are drillable. Four to six focused sessions typically produce visible movement in two components at once, and the before-and-after evidence is two marked Paper 1B sections rather than an impression.

How do we tell whether my daughter's investigation draft is any good?+

Read it against the four criteria rather than as a piece of writing. Research design: does the question have a measurable relationship, a stated range, controlled variables and enough points for a trend to appear? Data analysis: is uncertainty propagated, are there error bars, are maximum and minimum gradients drawn? Conclusion: is the result compared with accepted physics rather than simply stated? Evaluation: are specific weaknesses identified with an estimate of their effect, or is it a generic list of errors? Weak drafts usually fail the first question, which cannot be fixed by rewriting.

Why does the evaluation section lose marks when my son lists all the errors?+

Because listing is not what the criterion rewards. Six marks are available for identifying the specific weaknesses of this method, judging their impact on the result obtained, and proposing realistic improvements that would address them. Writing that human reaction time was a limitation is true and generic. Estimating its size, showing what it does to the gradient, and proposing a light gate as the fix is the evaluation being asked for. It is the criterion most commonly thrown away and one of the easiest to recover.

Which theme separates a Higher Level physics cohort most sharply?+

Fields, consistently. Field strength and potential are conceptually distinct and get used interchangeably, the sign conventions punish a casual approach, and the theme also holds capacitance, induction and alternating current at Higher Level. Internal resistance questions within the electrical material are a particularly reliable discriminator. Rotational dynamics in the motion theme runs it close for a different reason: it has no school-level precursor, so on a marked script it is either entirely secure or entirely blank, with very little in between.

Can online lessons cover the practical side of Physics HL?+

Partly, and the honest answer names the limit. Handling apparatus cannot be done over a video link, and a student who has never set up a circuit or used a micrometer is missing something real that belongs to the school. What can be done remotely is experimental design in full, the whole of data analysis, evaluation reasoning, and all the examined physics. A well-designed experiment using everyday equipment at home, planned in a session and carried out by the student, often produces better data than a rushed laboratory afternoon.

How long before we see evidence that physics tutoring is working?+

It depends which problem is being addressed, and a provider should tell you before you buy. A content gap in one theme shows on the next paper covering that theme. Accuracy and units habits move in three to four weeks of marked work. Pacing and extended-response technique take four to six weeks. A mathematics repair underneath the physics takes about six weeks and then improves every theme simultaneously. An investigation improvement shows in one submission cycle. None of that is a grade promise, and no tutor can give one.

Should my child take two Higher Level sciences in an Ajman or Sharjah school?+

It depends on laboratory provision and timetabling more than on ability, and it is a fair question to ask the school directly. Two Higher Level sciences means two scientific investigations with overlapping deadlines, two sets of practical work, and roughly 480 taught hours between them. Where laboratory access is limited, the investigations compete for the same scarce resource. Ask which weeks each investigation falls in, and whether the two departments coordinate their deadlines, before the subject form is signed.

Does IB Gram send a physics tutor to a home in Ajman?+

No. Lessons for UAE families are delivered one-to-one over live video, and IB Gram does not run home visits anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is offered only in India. For this subject the format covers most of where the marks are: annotating a graph together on a shared screen, working a derivation line by line, marking a script with both people looking at the same page. What it does not cover is apparatus handling, which belongs to the school, and this page says so rather than implying otherwise.

Can we pay my son's own physics teacher for private lessons in Ajman?+

You should not, and a provider arranging it is offering something the rules do not permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and granted free of charge for two years, carries a code of conduct barring a holder from tutoring students affiliated with their own school. In Abu Dhabi emirate, ADEK's professional-ethics rules place a comparable restriction on private and charter school staff. For an Ajman family whose child is schooled across the border, the rule is simply that the tutor should not be employed by that school.

What if the six-week review shows nothing has changed?+

Then the programme was wrong, and a provider worth paying will say so rather than recommending more of it. The review runs on the same evidence as the first diagnosis: a marked question and a Paper 1B section from week six against those from the trial, plus the current investigation draft against the previous one. If there has been no movement, the usual explanations are a misdiagnosed category, a slot the student is too tired to use, or a mismatch with the tutor. All three are fixable, and continuing unchanged is not.

Who supervises my child's school if we live in Ajman, and does it affect physics?+

The federal Ministry of Education, which u.ae names as the supervising body for private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah; there is no emirate-level authority here. If your child attends school in Sharjah, that school sits under the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which approves curricula, fees and assessment methods as well as inspecting. For physics specifically the practical consequence is laboratory provision and the internal investigation deadline, both of which belong to the school rather than to the emirate of residence.

Can a tutor help with the scientific investigation without crossing a line?+

Yes, and the boundary is firm. A tutor may discuss the research question, explain what each of the four criteria rewards, advise on whether a design will produce usable data, and read a draft the student has written and give feedback with the band named. A tutor may not supply data, produce the analysis, write any part of the report, or hand over a worked graph. Keeping every draft in a shared folder is also the honest record of how the work developed, which matters if authorship is ever questioned.

Start with the documents you already have

A Higher Level Physics grade can be stuck for four quite different reasons, and all four produce the same sentence on a report card. The marked Paper 2, the investigation draft and the last few reports are already in the house, and together they say which one it is. Send them, and spend the free lesson on the count rather than on introductions: how many marks are in each category, and which of them are the cheap repairs. Two of the four are cheaper than most families expect. One is more expensive and worth knowing about early. Either way, the answer is more useful than a programme bought on an impression.
