IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The question that decides a tutoring plan: which papers is your child actually sitting?

Most families cannot answer it, and that is not a criticism of the families. Schools report by subject, parents think in subjects, and tutoring is advertised by subject. The examination, though, is a set of components, each with its own weighting, duration, question style and mark scheme, and each with its own characteristic way of losing a candidate three marks. A plan built on the subject name attacks the wrong thing roughly half the time.

The first concrete step is therefore to ask the school's examinations officer for the syllabus code of every subject your child is entered for. It will look like 0580 or 0980 for Cambridge Mathematics, 0620 for Chemistry, 0625 for Physics, 0610 for Biology, or 4MA1, 4CH1, 4PH1 and 4BI1 for the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE equivalents. That single list changes a tutoring conversation from general to specific, and it takes one email to obtain.

The codes matter more than they look. Cambridge 0580 and 0980 are both Mathematics and are graded on different scales, so a student practising from the wrong set of past papers is reading boundaries that do not apply to them. Cambridge tiers many subjects into Core and Extended, which sets the highest grade available before the exam hall. The sciences carry separate practical arrangements, and the two routes through them are assessed quite differently. None of that is visible from a report card.

There is a second, purely administrative risk specific to candidates outside the United Kingdom. Cambridge International allocates every examination centre to one of six administrative zones and states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the centre's zone, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong version. A family working from a timetable found online rather than from the centre's own zone version is carrying a real and avoidable risk, and the cost of resolving it is one email to the examinations officer rather than anything more elaborate.

Two things to be plain about before the components. Tuition for UAE families is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, and IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, since home visits are a service offered only in India. And every syllabus document, past paper and mark scheme referred to here belongs to Cambridge International, Pearson or the International Baccalaureate, and is referenced and linked rather than reproduced, because copying them is a copyright matter and, for unreleased material, a malpractice exposure. A provider offering a folder of downloadable mark schemes is taking a risk on your family's behalf rather than giving you something useful, and the school's own legitimate materials cover the same ground.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

A British-curriculum school in Abu Dhabi runs four stages that matter to a tutoring plan, and the assessment logic changes completely between the third and the fourth. These blocks say what each one actually measures.

PRIAges 5-11

Primary, Years 1 to 6

Teacher assessment against curriculum objectives, with no external examination and no syllabus code. The things that matter later are narrow and identifiable: number bonds and times tables to automaticity, reading stamina sufficient for a page of unfamiliar text, and the ability to write a paragraph with a point and support. A primary report can look settled while any one of those is missing.

In Abu Dhabi these years carry the mandatory UAE subjects alongside the British curriculum, under the federal requirement overseen by the Ministry of Education. Arabic appears on the report with a conventional grade attached, usually before anything else does, and for a non-Arabic-speaking household it is the first line where a parent has no independent way of judging whether the mark is fair or the progress real.

KS3Ages 11-14

Key Stage 3, Years 7 to 9

Three years of no external assessment, ending in the option choices that fix the IGCSE set. The most consequential tutoring in a British-curriculum education happens here and almost nobody buys it, because nothing is at stake visibly. Rearranging a formula, writing a method line, and structuring a written argument are the three transferable skills that the IGCSE years will test in nine subjects at once.

Year 9 option choices in the UAE carry a regulatory consequence most families only meet years later. Ministry of Education equivalency for British-curriculum students counts five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no lower than grade E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic Education are not counted among the five. A page currently ranking in this market states the figure as six; it is five, and that is a whole option slot.

IGCSEAges 14-16

IGCSE, Years 10 and 11

Two linear years assessed by terminal examination, built from components with published weightings. The paper set is determined by the syllabus code, the available grade range by the tier, and the practical assessment by which route the school uses. Each of those three is a decision made by the school before the course begins, and each one changes what useful tutoring looks like for that subject.

An Abu Dhabi candidate sits the June series or the November series with Cambridge, and the May and June or November series with Pearson Edexcel. The February and March Cambridge series is offered to India only. The centre's administrative zone determines which version of the timetable applies, and that question should be answered by the school rather than inferred from any published summary.

POST16Ages 16-19

A Level, and the IB Diploma as the alternative route

A Level narrows to three or four subjects studied in depth, with no enforced breadth and no compulsory extended research piece. Some Abu Dhabi families move to an IB Diploma school for the sixth form instead, taking six subjects with three at Higher Level plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity-Activity-Service. The two routes ask genuinely different things, and the choice is about working style as much as ability.

Equivalency on the A Level route requires one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no lower than grade E, or two accredited Advanced Subsidiary subjects at the same grade, alongside the five IGCSE or GCSE passes. No IB points threshold is published on this page because none could be verified against the Ministry of Education's own site, so confirm that directly before planning a Diploma route around any figure.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each entry names the components rather than the content, because the component is the unit a session should target. The losses described are the ones that recur on marked scripts rather than the ones that feel most difficult.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580 and 0980)

IGCSE Core and Extended

Two codes on different grading scales covering comparable content, so the first job is confirming which one is on the entry. Extended losses cluster in bearings, upper and lower bounds, similar-shape ratios and premature rounding. The single largest avoidable loss across both codes is a correct answer with no method written beside it.

Mathematics A (Pearson 4MA1)

IGCSE Higher and Foundation

A different paper split from Cambridge and its own formula-sheet conventions, which is why a student drilled on Cambridge papers meets unfamiliar phrasing. The commonest specification error is assuming a formula is provided when it is not. Confirm the specification before buying any past-paper work for this subject.

Physics (Cambridge 0625)

IGCSE Extended and Core

Multiple-choice, theory and practical components, with the practical arrangement differing by school. Marks are lost on explain questions where no definition was stated first, and on circuit questions attempted without drawing the circuit. Electromagnetic induction is the single heaviest topic for lost marks at Extended level.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620)

IGCSE Extended and Core

Theory papers plus a practical component, and the practical is where the clearest separation between candidates happens, because it rewards a method somebody could actually follow. Units omitted from mole calculations cost marks the arithmetic had already earned. Organic naming and the reactivity series are recall and can be banked a year early.

Biology (Cambridge 0610)

IGCSE Extended and Core

Content volume invites memorisation and the assessment rewards command-term discipline. Describe, explain, compare and suggest each want a different answer shape, and a well-learned paragraph earns two of five when the verb wanted a mechanism. Graph interpretation and experimental design make up most of the remaining recoverable marks.

English Language

IGCSE

Two papers testing different things that students revise as one. Reading comprehension rewards precise retrieval and inference under time pressure; directed writing rewards audience, form and purpose being addressed explicitly. Candidates who write well but ignore the form specified in the task lose marks that have nothing to do with their prose.

English Literature

IGCSE

Essay marks depend on a sustained argument rather than coverage of the text, and the single most common loss is a well-informed tour of the plot. Quotation handling is marked: embedded, brief and analysed scores above long and unexamined. Marking essay plans rather than full essays produces faster progress and a weekly artefact.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

DP HL and SL

Relevant for families moving to an IB Diploma sixth form. Algebraic fluency carries the course, the paper without a calculator concentrates the losses, and Higher Level adds proof and complex numbers where a missing justification line costs more than an arithmetic slip.

Arabic as an additional language

MoE mandatory stream

Required in UAE private schools alongside the British curriculum. Dubai's regulator publishes the most detailed public guidance and requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students, because curriculum expectations and the language of instruction differ between streams. The non-Arab stream has its own syllabus and its own realistic ceiling.

UAE Social Studies and Moral Education

MoE mandatory stream

Runs alongside the licensed curriculum in UAE private schools. Content is prescribed, and KHDA's published guidance states that using different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited, so support here means working with the school's own material rather than substituting anything for it.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements built around components rather than hours. The right one depends on which component is losing the marks and how long there is before it is sat.

Single-component work

Sessions targeting one named paper on one syllabus code: Cambridge 0620 Paper 4, for instance, or Pearson 4MA1 Paper 2. Each session uses questions from that component only, under its own time constraints, and works on its characteristic losses. This is the most efficient arrangement available when a family knows which paper is pulling the grade down, and the mock usually tells them.

  • One paper, one code, one set of characteristic losses
  • Questions drawn from that component only
  • Timed from the first session rather than the last
  • Most efficient use of hours once the mock is marked

Practical and alternative-to-practical preparation

A short block for the science practical arrangement the school actually uses, which differs between centres and is the component families most often leave unprepared. The work is specific: describing a method somebody could follow, identifying variables precisely, handling anomalous results honestly, and drawing a graph to the conventions the mark scheme requires.

  • Built on the practical route the school actually uses
  • Method writing that a reader could follow and repeat
  • Variables, controls and anomalies handled explicitly
  • Graph conventions marked to the published requirements

Key Stage 3 foundation work

A longer, lighter arrangement in Years 7 to 9, usually one session a week or a fortnight, aimed at the three transferable skills that the IGCSE years will test everywhere at once: algebraic manipulation, writing method, and structuring a paragraph with a point and support. This is the cheapest and least popular tutoring in the market and the highest return on cost.

  • Weekly or fortnightly, at the lower end of the market bands
  • Algebraic fluency built by short frequent practice
  • Method writing established before it is examined
  • Pays off in nine IGCSE subjects simultaneously

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

Which papers your child sits, and what each one actually tests

An IGCSE subject grade is assembled from components, and the components are not interchangeable. A multiple-choice paper tests breadth of recall under speed. A structured theory paper tests whether a candidate can produce the specific thing a command term asked for. A practical or alternative-to-practical component tests experimental reasoning, which is a different skill from knowing the science. A candidate can be strong in one and weak in another within the same subject, and the overall grade hides that completely.

This is why the mock paper breakdown is worth more than the mock grade. A student with a C overall may be sitting on an A in the theory paper and a D in the practical, in which case the useful six weeks of work is entirely practical technique and none of it is content revision. The opposite case exists just as often. Either way, the subject-level grade points at nothing specific, and acting on it means guessing.

The table sets out the component types and what each one rewards, which is the framework to apply to whichever specification your child is entered for. The exact component list, durations and weightings must come from the current syllabus document for that code, via the school, because they differ between subjects, between codes and between boards, and they are revised. What transfers is the question to ask: which components, in what proportion, and where did the marks go on each? A school that cannot answer the third part of that question has not marked the paper properly, which is itself worth knowing.

Syllabus codes: why 0580 and 0980 are not the same entry

Cambridge runs more than one code for some subjects, and the codes differ in ways that matter to a candidate. For Mathematics, 0580 and 0980 cover comparable content but are reported on different grading scales. A student who has been practising from past papers and grade boundaries belonging to the other code has been measuring themselves against numbers that do not apply, which is a demoralising and entirely avoidable experience.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE adds a second axis of confusion, because its codes look nothing like Cambridge's: 4MA1 for Mathematics A, 4CH1 for Chemistry, 4PH1 for Physics, 4BI1 for Biology. The paper splits differ, the formula-sheet conventions differ, and the question phrasing differs noticeably even where the physics is identical. A student drilled on the wrong board has practised the right subject for the wrong examination.

The fix costs one email. Ask the examinations officer for the board, the syllabus code and the tier for every subject on the entry, and keep the reply. Everything downstream depends on it: which past papers to buy, which boundaries to read, which revision guide is the right one, and which specialist to ask for. A tutor who starts work without that list is working on assumptions, and in a two-year linear course those assumptions are expensive to discover late. The same email should ask for the centre's administrative zone, because that is the other piece of information nobody volunteers and everybody needs. Two answers, one message, and the whole plan rests on solid ground instead of inference.

03

The science practical component, and the two routes through it

  • The component rewards communicable reasoning, not laboratory dexterity
  • Variables named precisely; anomalies reported honestly
  • Graph conventions are marked and are learnable in one session
  • First exercise: the tutor follows the student's method exactly as written
  • Confirm which practical route the centre uses before preparing

Science subjects assess experimental skill, and schools reach that assessment by different routes depending on the arrangement at the centre. The component is worth a meaningful share of the grade and it is the one families most often leave entirely unprepared, partly because it feels like something only school can teach and partly because it is invisible in a report that gives one grade per subject.

What it actually rewards is communicable reasoning rather than laboratory dexterity. A candidate has to describe a method in enough detail that a reader could repeat it, identify the independent, dependent and controlled variables precisely, explain how a measurement was made and why that way, handle an anomalous result honestly rather than quietly, and draw a graph to the conventions the mark scheme specifies. All of those can be taught and practised without equipment.

That is why practical preparation works online as well as it does. The marks are in the writing and the reasoning, not in the manipulation, and a tutor can mark a method description as rigorously as an examiner will. The first useful exercise is always the same: the student writes a method, the tutor tries to follow it exactly as written, and the gaps become obvious to the student rather than being pointed out to them. Confirm with the school which practical route applies before buying any preparation for this component, because the routes are assessed differently and preparing for the wrong one is work that earns nothing.

04

The six-zone timetable rule, and the question that resolves it

This is the most consequential administrative detail on the page and almost nothing in this market mentions it. Cambridge International allocates every examination centre to one of six administrative zones. It states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the centre's zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an examination after using the wrong version. A UAE candidate working from a timetable found online is therefore carrying a risk that nobody has told them about.

The resolution is a single question to the school's examinations officer: which administrative zone is our centre in, and may we have the correct timetable version. Keep the reply. Use that document for every date, and treat any other summary, including this page, as unreliable for timing purposes. This also matters when a family is planning around a return flight or a family commitment, because the same paper can sit on different days in different zones.

Pearson Edexcel operates differently but with a comparable caution. It publishes provisional timetables ahead of a series and then finalises them, which means a date read early can be revised. The correct practice is to work from the live official timetable rather than from any restatement of it. The historical anchors are checkable: the November 2026 final International GCSE timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results reached centres on 19 August 2026 and students the day after, and November 2025 results arrived with students on 22 January 2026.

The five-subject equivalency rule, and why Year 9 options decide it

Ministry of Education equivalency converts a foreign school certificate into something the UAE system recognises, and for British-curriculum students the published requirements are specific. A candidate must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, and must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level with a grade no lower than E, or two accredited subjects at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. Arabic and Islamic Education are not included among the five required subjects.

That exclusion is the part families miss, and it has a direct effect on an option sheet. A student taking nine subjects of which two are Arabic and Islamic Education has seven that can count, which is comfortable. A student taking a narrower set, or one whose accredited subject list is shorter than it appears, can find the margin uncomfortably thin. The decision point is Year 9, which is years before anyone thinks about attestation.

One further correction is worth stating because it is live in this market: a page currently ranking tells UAE parents that six IGCSE subjects are required. The published figure is five. Publishing the correct number is a small thing that beats a ranking page on accuracy, and acting on the wrong one costs a family a genuine option slot. Equivalency is also not a process a tutoring provider performs, guarantees or accelerates, and it is not a reason to buy tutoring; it is a rule to know early and to verify with the official channel.

Arabic, Islamic Education and UAE Social Studies alongside the IGCSE set

Private schools in the UAE teach mandatory UAE subjects regardless of the licensed international curriculum. The federal position is that private schools are not obliged to follow a specific curriculum beyond Arabic language, social studies and Islamic studies, but must adhere to the Ministry's general regulations. That is the rule behind every emirate's requirement, and it is the reason an IGCSE timetable in Abu Dhabi is fuller than the same timetable in England.

The most detailed published guidance comes from Dubai's regulator and is worth reading even by an Abu Dhabi family, because it describes the structure that the federal rule produces. It requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, stating that combined classes for both groups are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. It sets the language of instruction for each stream, and it requires that teachers of Islamic Education and Arabic hold the relevant approval to teach those subjects.

Two practical consequences follow for tutoring. The first is that the non-Arab Arabic stream is a different course with a different ceiling from the first-language stream, and a tutor should be matched to the right one. The second is a constraint on material: the published guidance states that using different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is strictly prohibited for these subjects. Support therefore means working with the school's own material rather than importing an alternative course, which is a narrower and more honest offer than most of this market makes.

What a session fixes in one hour, and what it does not

  • One session: command terms, definitions, units, method lines, circuit drawing
  • Several weeks: algebraic fluency, timed pacing, graph conventions under pressure
  • A term: conceptual foundations, essay structure, reading stamina
  • Never purchasable: the practice the student does between sessions

The honest unit of change in tutoring is not an hour, and pretending otherwise is how families end up disappointed by something that was working. Some things genuinely shift within a single session, and they are all conventions: reading the command term before the question, stating a definition before an explanation, writing units on every line, drawing the circuit first, writing the method line the mark scheme credits. Those transfer immediately across every paper the student sits.

Other things take weeks. Algebraic fluency is built by short daily practice and cannot be installed in a session. Timed-paper pacing improves over four or five full papers, not one. Reading stamina and essay structure move across a term. And a missing conceptual foundation, in energetics or in mechanics or in the behaviour of fractions, has to be rebuilt in sequence, which means starting earlier in the syllabus than the student expects and is the least popular correct answer in this business.

This matters commercially as well as educationally. A tutor who promises that six sessions will move a grade from a D to an A is describing a sale. A tutor who says that two sessions will eliminate a unit-omission habit, four will fix command-term discipline, and a term will rebuild algebraic fluency is describing a plan, and the second is checkable against the next marked paper. Ask which category each item falls into during the free trial lesson; the answer tells you what the next six months would look like.

08

Coursework and controlled assessment: the line a tutor does not cross

  • Explaining criteria, narrowing a title, teaching a method: allowed and worth paying for
  • Marking a draft the student wrote and naming the weak criterion: allowed
  • Contributing text, redrafting to final form, supplying data: never, at any price
  • Syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes: linked, never reproduced
  • The self-test: every sentence explainable, unprompted, to the marker

Some specifications carry coursework or a non-examined assessment, and a sixth form produces more of it. In every case the submission has to be the student's own work, and the consequence of a breach falls on the student rather than on anyone selling assistance. This section states the boundary in advance so that no session of this kind starts with it unclear.

What a tutor can do is substantial and is the actual service being paid for. Read the published assessment criteria alongside the student and explain what each descriptor awards. Press on a research question or investigation title until it is answerable within the limit. Teach the statistical test, the laboratory technique, the referencing convention or the model the task requires. Read a draft the student wrote and name the criterion that is costing marks. Rehearse the conversation the student is about to have with their teacher or supervisor.

What a tutor cannot do is contribute to the submission: no text, no redraft into a final version, no data presented as collected, no edit that leaves the work substantially someone else's. One operation ranking in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at a published price, which is an academic-integrity breach and a malpractice trigger for the student rather than the seller. The test a student can apply unaided is whether they could explain every sentence of their own submission, without prompting, to the person who marks it. If they could not, the line has been crossed whoever crossed it, and the honest repair is to go back to the last version that was genuinely theirs.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

The neighbourhoods families travel from, with the detail that affects scheduling rather than price. Al Mushrif sits inland on the island, and the afternoon pattern around it sets what time a weekly session can realistically start.

Al Mushrif

An established inland island neighbourhood with several long-standing schools nearby and a predominantly long-term resident population. Short school runs, but the roads around the school cluster are slow at pick-up, which pushes a dependable session start past half past four rather than at four.

Al Karamah and Al Nahyan

Villa and low-rise neighbourhoods adjoining Al Mushrif, where households often have children at two different schools in the same area. Two fixed slots on two evenings is the usual arrangement, and both can be held because neither depends on a tutor's driving route.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

The western island neighbourhoods, a short drive away, with a mix of villas and apartments and a high proportion of settled families. Multi-year arrangements are more common here than crash blocks, which suits the Key Stage 3 work that pays off at IGCSE.

Corniche and Markaziyah

Apartment living in the island core, where a large share of students travel by bus and the bus timetable sets the earliest realistic session. Families here are the most likely to need a slot after seven, which a travelling tutor can rarely offer at a sensible rate.

Al Reem Island

Dense towers at the eastern end with a large school-age population and a slow exit onto the main crossing in the late afternoon. Weekday sessions here work from five o'clock onwards, and weekend blocks are popular for full timed papers that need more than an hour.

Khalifa City and Al Raha

The mainland villa corridor, roughly thirty to forty-five minutes from Al Mushrif at peak. For families who moved outward and kept the island school place, this crossing is precisely what a travelling tutor prices into an in-home rate.

Saadiyat and Yas Islands

Island communities a crossing away, where a sibling at a newer school is common. Two schools with two different assessment calendars in one household is the usual reason a family needs both IGCSE component work and Diploma criterion work in the same week.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Al Mushrif and the inland island

A cluster of long-established schools within a few minutes of one another, drawing from overlapping villa neighbourhoods. Students move between them more often than across to the mainland, so a tutor familiar with one school's examination calendar usually recognises the others.

One email produces the single most useful document a family can hold, and everything downstream depends on it: which past papers, which boundaries, which revision guide, which specialist.

  2. 02

Send the mock breakdown, not the mock grade

A subject grade points at nothing. A component breakdown shows that the theory paper was fine and the practical was not, or the reverse, and that determines where the next six weeks go. If the school does not provide a breakdown, ask for one; the marks exist per component.

  3. 03

Name the component in the request

A request that says Chemistry reaches a generalist. One that says Cambridge 0620 Extended, Paper 4 and Paper 6, currently a C, reaches someone who has marked both. At this level the component is the unit of work, and matching on the subject name alone wastes the first two sessions.

  4. 04

Use the free trial lesson to sort conventions from foundations

One session with the proposed tutor, no payment and no card. Ask them to list which losses on the script are conventions fixable in a session and which are foundations needing a term. A tutor who can separate the two is describing a plan; one who cannot is describing a sale.

  5. 05

Check the practical route before preparing for it

Science practical arrangements differ between centres, and preparing for the wrong route is wasted work. Ask the science department which arrangement applies, then prepare specifically: method writing, variable identification, anomaly handling and graph conventions, all of which can be marked rigorously online.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to a component on a named code

A tutor allocated to Cambridge 0625 Paper 4 or Pearson 4MA1 Paper 2 knows the paper structure, the formula conventions and the characteristic losses. Exactly one syllabus code appears across the entire seven-page competitor area cluster measured for this project, which indicates how little of this market works at component level.

The zone timetable rule stated explicitly

Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and warns that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who use the wrong version. No competitor page measured for this project mentions it. One question to the examinations officer removes the risk entirely, and this page says which question.

The mandatory UAE subjects treated properly

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social Studies run alongside the licensed curriculum, with published rules on class organisation, language of instruction and content. No competitor page measured in any cluster has a section on them; Arabic appears only as a subject chip. The constraint on importing alternative content is stated here rather than ignored.

The correct equivalency figure, with its source

Five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no lower than grade E or grade 3, excluding Arabic and Islamic Education, plus one A-Level at E or two AS-Levels at E. A page currently ranking in this market publishes six subjects. Being right about a number a family acts on is the whole of trust at this scale.

Online delivery stated before any payment

Lessons for UAE families run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. Two ranking competitors route UAE parents to numbers outside the country without saying where delivery actually happens.

No claimed approvals and no reproduced exam material

IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the International Baccalaureate, Cambridge or Pearson, and names no school here as a client. Syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes are referenced and linked rather than copied.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How do we find out which syllabus codes our child is entered for?+

Ask the school's examinations officer in writing for the board, syllabus code and tier of every subject on the entry, and keep the reply. The codes look like 0580 or 0980 for Cambridge Mathematics, 0620 for Chemistry, 0625 for Physics and 0610 for Biology, or 4MA1, 4CH1, 4PH1 and 4BI1 for the Pearson Edexcel International GCSE equivalents. Everything downstream depends on that list: which past papers to use, which grade boundaries apply, and which specialist to ask for.

Are Cambridge 0580 and 0980 Mathematics interchangeable for revision?+

No. They cover comparable content but are reported on different grading scales, so past papers and grade boundaries from one do not translate cleanly to the other. A student measuring themselves against the wrong boundaries gets a misleading and usually demoralising picture of where they stand. Confirm which code is on the entry before buying any materials, and check that any tutor you engage is working from the same code rather than from the version they happen to know.

What is the six-zone timetable rule and does it affect Abu Dhabi candidates?+

It affects every Cambridge candidate outside the United Kingdom. Cambridge International allocates each examination centre to one of six administrative zones and states that using the correct version of the timetable for the centre's zone is essential, warning that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong version. Ask your examinations officer which zone the centre sits in and work only from that timetable version. A date found online is not a safe substitute.

Why does the mock component breakdown matter more than the mock grade?+

Because the grade hides the diagnosis. A candidate with a C overall might be sitting on an A in the theory paper and a D in the practical component, in which case the next six weeks should be entirely practical technique and none of it content revision. The reverse case is just as common. The subject grade points at nothing specific, so acting on it is guessing. If the school does not issue a breakdown, ask for one; the marks exist per component.

Can the science practical component really be prepared for online?+

Yes, because the marks are in the reasoning and the writing rather than in handling apparatus. The component rewards describing a method someone could repeat, naming independent, dependent and controlled variables precisely, explaining how a measurement was taken, treating an anomalous result honestly, and drawing a graph to the conventions the mark scheme specifies. The most effective first exercise is the tutor following the student's written method exactly as written, which makes the gaps the student's own discovery.

Which practical route does our school use, and why do we need to know?+

Science practical arrangements differ between centres, and preparing for the wrong one is wasted work. Ask the science department which arrangement applies to each science subject before buying any preparation for that component. It is a short question with a definite answer, and it determines what the session should contain. Families most often leave this component entirely unprepared because it feels like something only the school can teach, which is not true of the parts that carry the marks.

For equivalency, how many accredited IGCSE passes must appear on the certificate?+

Five. A British-curriculum student must pass five accredited subjects in GCSE or IGCSE certificates at a grade no lower than E or grade 3, and Arabic and Islamic Education are not included among those five. There is a post-16 requirement too: one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or above, or two at Advanced Subsidiary at the same grade. A page currently ranking in this market says six subjects; it is five, and the difference is a real option slot at Year 9.

Do Arabic and Islamic Education count towards the equivalency total?+

No. The published clarification states explicitly that Arabic and Islamic education are not included among the five required subjects for the GCSE and IGCSE count. They are still mandatory in UAE private schools under the federal requirement, so a student takes them and they appear on the certificate, but they do not contribute to the five. That is worth knowing when counting accredited subjects on a Year 9 option sheet, which is where the margin is actually set.

What are the rules on tutoring Arabic and Islamic Education in the UAE?+

Published guidance requires separate classes for Arab and non-Arab students in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, stating that combined classes are strictly prohibited because the curriculum expectations and language of instruction differ. It also states that using different or additional content without prior permission from the Ministry of Education is prohibited for these subjects. Practically, tutoring means working with the school's own material rather than importing an alternative course, and the tutor must match the correct stream.

Which Arabic stream should a non-Arabic-speaking family ask for?+

Arabic as an additional language, which is a separate course from Arabic as a first language with its own expectations and its own realistic ceiling. The two are taught in separate classes by requirement, and a tutor matched to the wrong stream will either pitch far above the student or cover material the school is not assessing. Ask the school which stream the student is in and request a tutor for that stream specifically rather than for Arabic in general.

What can a single session actually change for a Year 11 candidate?+

Conventions, and they transfer immediately. Reading the command term before the question, stating a definition before an explanation, writing units on every line of a calculation, drawing the circuit before attempting the question, and writing the method line the mark scheme credits. Each of those can be installed in an hour and shows up on the next paper. What cannot change in a session is algebraic fluency, timed pacing or a missing conceptual foundation, and an honest plan says which is which.

Is Key Stage 3 tutoring worth paying for when nothing is examined?+

It is the highest return on cost in the whole market and the least purchased. Three transferable skills decide the IGCSE years in nine subjects at once: rearranging a formula, writing method, and structuring a paragraph with a point and support. Building them in Years 7 to 9 costs the lower end of the market bands, roughly AED 65 to 150 an hour, because it is content teaching rather than diagnosis. Fixing the same gaps in Year 11 costs the specialist rate and competes with exam preparation.

Can a tutor help with a non-examined assessment that is due next week?+

With the student's own draft, yes; with the writing, no, regardless of the deadline. A tutor can explain what each criterion descriptor awards, narrow the title until it is answerable, teach the method the task requires, mark the draft the student wrote and name the criterion costing marks, and rehearse the conversation with the teacher. A tutor cannot contribute text, redraft into a final version or supply data. One operation ranking in this market sells completed coursework, and the student carries that risk alone.

Why will a tutor not supply past papers and mark schemes directly?+

Because they belong to Cambridge International, Pearson or the International Baccalaureate, and reproducing or distributing them is a copyright matter rather than a service. For unreleased material it is also a malpractice exposure. The correct approach is to reference the official document, link to it on the board's own site, and work from materials the school has legitimately provided. A provider offering downloadable mark schemes and grade-boundary tables is taking a risk on the family's behalf.

What does tutoring cost for a British-curriculum student in Abu Dhabi?+

Market rates for a qualified online subject tutor run roughly AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150 and IB from AED 200, and a specialist in a named component at AED 200 to 450 or more, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. Entry-level online tutors sit lower, with Tutopiya advertising from AED 33 to 52 and EdFlik from AED 45 to 65. In-home visits are quoted at AED 180 to 500 once travel is inside the fee. Each figure belongs to the provider named.

Can a weekly session near Al Mushrif realistically start straight after school?+

Usually not at four o'clock. The roads around the inland island school cluster are slow at pick-up, and a dependable weekly slot starts from about half past four onwards, later for families whose children travel by bus from the island core. That is the practical argument for video delivery here rather than a marketing one: the slot can be set where it actually works and moved by an hour when something intervenes, without anyone redrawing a driving route.
