IGCSE Maths Tutor in Al Nahyan

An IGCSE maths tutor in Al Nahyan has one job: get your child fluent in the specific specification their school entered them for. That is Cambridge 0580, Cambridge International Mathematics 0607 or Pearson Edexcel 4MA1, and the three behave differently in the exam hall. IB Gram matches Al Nahyan families with a maths specialist who teaches that paper, one-to-one over live video, on Gulf Standard Time.

  • Specification named before the first lesson: 0580, 0607 or 4MA1
  • Mark schemes read line by line, including method and follow-through marks
  • Live one-to-one video lessons timed to the Al Nahyan school day
  • Free trial lesson before any commitment, with no card required

IB & IGCSE in Al Nahyan

Start with the specification, not the subject

Parents in Al Nahyan usually arrive at this search after a report card. A grade has slipped, or a mock paper has come back with a number that does not match what the student thought they knew. The instinct is to find someone good at maths. The more useful instinct is to find someone who knows which maths paper your child is sitting, because IGCSE Mathematics is not one qualification. It is at least three in common use across Abu Dhabi schools, and the differences are large enough to change what a student should practise this week.

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 is the version most British-curriculum schools in the emirate use. It is tiered into Core and Extended, and a student sits two written papers. Cambridge International Mathematics 0607 is a different animal, built around a graphic display calculator and carrying an investigation paper at Extended tier. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics Specification A, code 4MA1, splits into Foundation and Higher and is examined through two papers of equal weight, both with a calculator permitted. A student drilling non-calculator arithmetic for a 4MA1 entry is spending hours on a skill the paper will not test in isolation.

This is why the first conversation about an IGCSE maths tutor in Al Nahyan should be short and factual. Which board. Which tier. Which papers, on which dates. What the school's mock used. Whether the student has a formula sheet in the exam or has to recall the formulae. A tutor who cannot answer those within the first ten minutes is going to teach topics, which feels productive and moves grades slowly. A tutor who starts there can tell you by the end of a trial lesson which three topics are costing the most marks and roughly how long each takes to repair.

Al Nahyan sits inland on Abu Dhabi island, between Airport Road and Al Karamah, a dense district of mid-rise apartment blocks rather than villa compounds. Families here send children across the island and out to the Khalifa City corridor, so the school day ends anywhere between 2:30pm and 3:45pm and the journey home can add forty minutes. That geography is the practical reason tuition here works better over live video: a 5pm slot survives traffic, a tutor driving in from somewhere else does not. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi — home visiting is an India-only service — and on a subject like maths the trade is a good one, because the scarce resource is a tutor who has marked 0580 Paper 4 rather than a tutor who lives nearby.

The rest of this page is the detail: how the two main specifications differ, how the tiering decision is made and when it stops being reversible, where the marks actually go topic by topic, what the mark scheme notation means, how eight weeks of past-paper work should be structured, and what the Abu Dhabi market charges for all of it. Figures are attributed. None of them is our price list.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Al Nahyan students reach IGCSE maths through a Cambridge Lower Secondary route, an Indian or American middle-school route, or a transfer from another system mid-way. Each arrives with different gaps, and the programme a student is in determines what a tutor should be fixing.

LSAges 11-14 · Years 7-9

Cambridge Lower Secondary Mathematics

The three years that decide whether Extended tier is realistic. Lower Secondary covers number, algebra, geometry, measure, statistics and probability at a level that looks gentle next to IGCSE, and the gap opens in Year 9 when algebraic manipulation becomes the load-bearing skill. Students who leave Year 9 unable to rearrange a formula confidently will meet that same weakness in every IGCSE topic that follows.

Abu Dhabi schools often make the Core or Extended recommendation during Year 9 on the strength of internal testing. For an Al Nahyan family, that means Year 9 is the cheapest year to buy tuition in: a term of work on algebraic fluency at that point changes which tier the school offers, and the tier decides the grade ceiling for the next two years.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580

Two written papers. At Core tier a student sits a short-answer paper and a structured paper graded C to G. At Extended tier the papers are longer and harder and the grade range runs A* to E. The syllabus content is number, algebra and graphs, coordinate geometry, geometry, mensuration, trigonometry, vectors and transformations, probability and statistics, with Extended adding topics Core never sees.

Extended 0580 is the standard entry at most British-curriculum schools on Abu Dhabi island, and the one a student needs if they intend to take Mathematics at AS and A Level or move into an IB Diploma maths course. A Core entry closes those doors quietly, which is why the tiering conversation matters more than any single topic.

4MA1Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A

Two papers of two hours, each worth half the qualification, both with a calculator allowed. Foundation tier is graded 5 to 1 and Higher tier 9 to 4, with the familiar numerical scale rather than letters. A formula sheet is provided, which shifts the emphasis from recall to selection and application. Content ranges across number, algebra, sequences, geometry, trigonometry, vectors and statistics.

Several Abu Dhabi schools moved to Pearson specifications for the numerical grading and the modular resit routes available further up the system. For a family in Al Nahyan the practical consequence is that Pearson results arrive on a different schedule: November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026, and June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026.

0606Ages 15-16 · Year 11

Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606

An optional extra qualification sat alongside 0580 Extended by students heading for A Level Mathematics or a Higher Level IB maths course. It introduces calculus, logarithms, binomial expansion and more demanding trigonometry a year early. Two papers, both calculator-permitted, with a noticeable jump in the algebra required to get started on a question.

Where an Al Nahyan school offers 0606, it is usually taught in a small set and moves fast. Students who cope with Extended 0580 but find 0606 brutal are almost always missing algebraic stamina rather than the new content, and that is a diagnosable, fixable gap over a term of weekly one-to-one work.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Maths is the reason you are on this page, but the topics below are the ones that generate the marks. Each line is a place where Abu Dhabi students reliably lose marks on 0580 and 4MA1, with what a tutor should be doing about it.

Algebraic manipulation and rearrangement

Core and Extended

The skill every other topic rests on. Students who cannot change the subject of a formula without hesitation lose marks in mensuration, trigonometry, kinematics-style questions and simultaneous equations. Fluency here is built by volume of short exercises, not by long worked examples.

Quadratics: factorising, formula, completing the square

Extended only

Extended 0580 and Higher 4MA1 both expect three routes into a quadratic and a judgement about which one the question wants. The common failure is reaching for the formula when the question says 'by factorising', which forfeits method marks even with a correct answer.

Functions, graphs and transformations

Extended only

Sketching, reading intersections, describing translations and stretches in function notation. Marks go when a student describes a transformation in words where the mark scheme wants the notation, or sketches a curve with the wrong asymptotic behaviour.

Trigonometry beyond right-angled triangles

Extended only

Sine rule, cosine rule, area formula and the ambiguous case. Three-dimensional trigonometry questions are where Extended candidates stall, usually because they do not draw the single relevant triangle out of the solid before starting.

Mensuration and compound solids

Core and Extended

Surface area and volume of cones, spheres, pyramids and frustums, plus similar-solid scale factors. The reliable error is applying a linear scale factor to an area or a volume. One clear lesson on the squared and cubed relationship usually ends the problem.

Vectors and column vector geometry

Extended only

Adding and subtracting column vectors, magnitude, and proving points collinear using a scalar multiple. Students lose marks by writing a geometric argument in sentences when the mark scheme asks for a vector route, and by dropping the arrow notation.

Probability, tree diagrams and conditional cases

Core and Extended

Without-replacement questions and two-stage trees. The marks are in labelling the branches and multiplying along them; the standard error is adding where the question requires multiplication, or forgetting that the second denominator has changed.

Statistics: cumulative frequency and histograms

Core and Extended

Reading medians and quartiles from a cumulative frequency curve, and frequency density on unequal class widths. Histogram questions are among the highest-yield fixes available, because the frequency density calculation is mechanical once a student has seen it done twice.

Number: bounds, standard form and surds

Core and Extended

Upper and lower bounds in a calculation, and exact-form answers. Extended candidates lose marks by rounding an intermediate value and carrying the error forward, which costs the accuracy mark even where the method was right.

Non-calculator arithmetic and exact answers

0580 Paper 1 and Paper 3

Cambridge 0580 has a paper where no calculator is permitted; Pearson 4MA1 does not. This single difference changes a student's revision diet, and it is the first thing to establish before any practice schedule is written.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats work for IGCSE maths, and they suit different problems. The choice should follow the diagnosis rather than the budget, because the cheapest format applied to the wrong problem is the most expensive thing on this page.

Weekly one-to-one, specification-matched

One sixty- or ninety-minute live video lesson a week with the same tutor, working through the specification in the order the school is teaching it, with marked past-paper questions between lessons. This is the format that moves a grade over a term rather than a fortnight, and it is what most Al Nahyan families start with after a disappointing mock.

  • Same tutor each week, so the diagnosis carries forward
  • Written feedback on marked questions between sessions
  • Lesson order follows the school's scheme of work
  • Session times set around the Al Nahyan school run

Intensive exam-technique block

A short run of lessons in the weeks before a series, built entirely around timed past papers and mark schemes rather than new content. Useful when the content is broadly known but the marks are not arriving: misread commands, lost method marks, answers rounded too early, questions abandoned too soon.

  • Timed papers sat under exam conditions, then marked against the official scheme
  • Error log maintained across papers to find the repeating fault
  • Focus on command words and the marks each one carries
  • Scheduled around the school's own mock and revision timetable

Topic repair, booked in short courses

Three to six lessons aimed at one diagnosed weakness — histograms, vectors, bounds, completing the square — rather than an open-ended weekly commitment. Parents who want a defined spend and a defined outcome usually prefer this, and it is honest about what a small number of hours can achieve.

  • A named topic and a finite number of lessons
  • Diagnostic question set first, repeat set at the end
  • No rolling commitment after the block closes
  • Can be repeated for a second topic if the first works

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Nahyan

01

What a search for an IGCSE maths tutor in Al Nahyan is really asking

The literal answer: an IGCSE maths tutor in Al Nahyan is a specialist who teaches Cambridge 0580, Cambridge 0607 or Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 to a student living in that district, almost always one-to-one and, in IB Gram's case, always over live video. The search word 'in Al Nahyan' describes where the student is, not where the teaching happens.

Behind the query there is usually a sharper question that parents do not type into Google: is my child on the right tier, and if the answer is no, how long do we have to change it. That question has a deadline attached, because a school's final entry decision is made months before the exam and a tier change after that point is awkward at best. A tutor who answers only the first question — can you help with maths — leaves the expensive part of the problem untouched.

The second unspoken question is about the mock result. An Abu Dhabi mock paper is usually a past paper from a recent series, marked to the official scheme by the class teacher. That makes it genuinely diagnostic, and it means the script itself is the most valuable document in the house. Before any tuition starts, the marked mock should be scanned and read question by question: not for the total, but for the pattern of where the marks stopped arriving. In most scripts, three or four recurring faults account for the majority of the lost marks, and two of them are usually technique rather than content.

That is the work this page describes. Everything below assumes the goal is a specific, diagnosable improvement on a named specification, delivered in weekly live video lessons to a household in Al Nahyan, with the figures and deadlines stated plainly enough that you can check them.

02

Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1: two specifications, two different revision diets

Most of the wasted effort in IGCSE maths tuition comes from treating the two main specifications as interchangeable. They are not. The table below sets them side by side on the points that change what a student should do on a Tuesday evening.

The calculator rule is the most consequential line in it. Cambridge 0580 includes a paper on which no calculator is permitted, so a 0580 candidate has to be fluent in exact-form arithmetic, surds, fraction manipulation and mental estimation. Pearson 4MA1 permits a calculator on both papers, so the same student would be better served spending those hours on calculator technique: storing intermediate values to avoid rounding errors, using the statistical functions, and checking that the machine is in degrees rather than radians.

The second consequential line is formula provision. Pearson supplies a formula sheet; Cambridge expects recall of a defined list. A 4MA1 student does not need to memorise the sine rule, but does need to recognise instantly which formula on the sheet a question is pointing at, which is a different skill and is trained differently. Tiering vocabulary also differs: Core and Extended for Cambridge, Foundation and Higher for Pearson, with different grade ranges in each case.

None of this is obscure. All of it is published on the boards' own sites, and the correct move for any Abu Dhabi family is to read the live specification and the current timetable there rather than trusting a summary. The point of the table is to show that the differences are large enough to matter, so the first question to any prospective tutor is which of these three documents they work from.

Core or Extended: the tiering decision, and when it stops being reversible

Tiering is the highest-stakes decision in IGCSE maths and it is usually made by the school, on internal evidence, in the middle of Year 10 or early in Year 11. A Core or Foundation entry caps the grade. That cap then propagates: AS and A Level Mathematics generally expects an Extended or Higher grade behind it, and a student heading for an IB Diploma maths course at Higher Level will struggle without the Extended content, which includes topics Core never covers at all.

The decision is not arbitrary and schools are usually right. A student placed at Extended who cannot hold algebraic manipulation together will fail to convert the harder paper into marks and may score worse than they would have at Core. The honest framing for a parent is therefore not 'push for Extended' but 'find out what the school is seeing, and whether it is fixable in the time available'. That is a question with a factual answer, and the marked internal assessments contain it.

Where tuition changes a tiering outcome, it almost always does so in Year 9 or early Year 10, by building algebraic fluency before the content load arrives. A term of weekly one-to-one work at that stage is the single highest-leverage spend available in the whole IGCSE run. The same money spent in the final term before the exam buys exam technique, which is worth having, but it cannot buy back a tier.

The table sets out what to check, and what each answer implies. Take it to the maths department rather than to a tutor: the school holds the evidence and makes the entry.

04

Where IGCSE maths marks actually go, topic by topic

  • Frequency density on unequal class widths — mechanical once taught, routinely dropped
  • Linear, area and volume scale factors in similar shapes — one rule, many marks
  • Rounding an intermediate value and carrying the error into the final answer
  • Answering 'show that' questions with a numerical check instead of an argument
  • Giving a decimal where the question demands an exact or surd form
  • Abandoning a multi-part question after part (a) instead of using the given answer in part (b)

Lost marks in IGCSE maths are not evenly spread. Across marked Abu Dhabi mock scripts the same handful of faults repeats, and most of them are cheap to repair because they are procedural rather than conceptual. A student who understands similar solids perfectly but applies a linear scale factor to a volume is not confused about geometry; they are missing one rule, and one lesson ends it.

The highest-yield repairs, in rough order of how many marks they return per hour spent, are frequency density in histograms, scale factors in similar shapes, without-replacement probability trees, rearranging a formula where the subject appears twice, bounds in a division, and three-dimensional trigonometry where the first move is to extract the relevant triangle. None of these takes a term. Each takes a lesson plus practice, and together they routinely account for a double-digit mark swing on an Extended paper.

Conceptual gaps are a different category and they take longer. The common ones are function notation, where a student can evaluate but cannot interpret a transformation; vectors, where the geometric meaning never attached to the algebra; and anything requiring a proof or a justification, where students who can compute cannot explain. These need teaching rather than drilling, and the honest estimate is several weeks each rather than one lesson.

The practical method is to maintain an error log across every paper the student sits. Each lost mark gets one line: the question, the topic, and the category — content not known, method known but misapplied, technique or timing, misread the command. After three papers the pattern is unmistakable and the revision plan writes itself. Most students have never done this, and it is the single cheapest piece of exam preparation available.

05

Reading a mark scheme: method marks, accuracy marks and follow-through

Almost no IGCSE maths student has read a mark scheme, and it is the most useful document in the subject. Mark schemes are published by both boards after each series and they explain, line by line, exactly what earns credit. Once a student has read three of them, their written answers change shape permanently.

The notation is simple. A method mark is awarded for a correct approach even where the arithmetic fails afterwards, which means a student who writes nothing down and gets the answer wrong scores zero where a student who shows a correct method and slips at the last step scores most of the marks. An accuracy mark requires the right value, properly rounded. Follow-through credit allows a correct subsequent step to earn marks even when it is built on an earlier wrong answer — but only if the working is visible. Special-case credit covers specific common near-misses the examiners decided to reward.

The behavioural consequences are blunt and worth stating to a teenager directly. Write down the substitution before you evaluate it. Keep full accuracy in intermediate values and round only at the end. If a question gives you an answer to use in a later part, use it even if your own earlier answer differed. Never erase a wrong attempt that contains a valid method; cross it out instead, because crossed-out work can still be marked if nothing replaces it.

A tutor's job here is to mark the student's own scripts against the official scheme and show them where credit was available and not claimed. That conversation, repeated across four or five papers, converts more marks than most content teaching, and it is the part a generalist maths tutor is least likely to do.

06

Eight weeks of past-paper work, structured rather than accumulated

Most families reach for past papers at the point where there is no time left for anything else, and then use them badly: sit a paper, check the total, feel bad, sit another. Papers used that way measure a student repeatedly without changing them. Structured properly, the same eight weeks do real work.

A workable shape runs like this. Week one is diagnostic: one full paper under exam conditions, marked strictly against the official scheme, with every lost mark logged by category. Weeks two to four are repair, driven entirely by that log — the three or four highest-frequency faults, taught and then drilled on question sets rather than whole papers. Week five is a second full paper, which tests whether the repairs held. Weeks six and seven are timing and endurance: full papers to the clock, with a hard rule that no question is abandoned before the given working is attempted. Week eight is light, revisiting the error log and the formula list rather than introducing anything.

Two rules make the difference. Papers must be sat to time, because the fault most Abu Dhabi students discover in a timed paper is that they spend twelve minutes on a four-mark question and then leave eighteen marks unattempted at the back. And papers must be marked against the published scheme rather than self-assessed, because students systematically award themselves marks for answers that would earn none and miss method marks they actually earned.

Sourcing is a boundary worth naming. Specifications, timetables, past papers and mark schemes are published by Cambridge and Pearson on their own sites, and that is where a family should get them. IB Gram does not reproduce or distribute board material; a tutor works through it with the student from the official source.

07

What IGCSE maths tuition costs around Al Nahyan, and what the hour buys

Published rates for maths tuition in the UAE vary by roughly a factor of ten, and the variation is not mostly about quality. It is about who is teaching, whether anyone is travelling, and how much marking happens between lessons. The table shows the bands visible in the market as read in October 2026, with the source of each, and what the hour is typically spent on at that level.

The useful way to read it is by what disappears as the price falls. At the budget end, the hour is usually spent going over homework the student has already attempted — valuable for confidence, limited for grade movement, and generally delivered by someone who has not marked a 0580 paper. In the middle band, the tutor teaches the specification and marks written work between sessions, which is where measurable improvement starts. At the specialist end, the fee buys judgement: which tier, which topics to abandon, which questions to practise, and what the mark scheme rewards.

In-home visiting carries its own premium in this market, quoted in survey data at AED 180 to 350 an hour and by independent home tutors at AED 200 to 500. A meaningful share of that is the drive. For a household in Al Nahyan, travelling in from the mainland in the afternoon, the premium buys physical presence and costs both money and session time. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table puts monthly spend for a weekly one-hour session at AED 240 to 600 at budget level, AED 600 to 1,200 mid-market, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 or more for specialist exam-year support.

Every figure here belongs to the market, not to IB Gram. Our own arrangement starts with a free trial lesson and a consultation in which the specification, the tier and the diagnosis are established before anyone discusses a schedule. If the free trial is the only number you remember from this page, the condition attached to it is simply that it is one lesson and you decide afterwards.

Academic honesty in maths, and ADEK's rules on who may tutor

Maths has less coursework exposure than the essay subjects, but the honesty boundary still matters, and it sits in a predictable place. A tutor may teach content, model a method, mark a student's attempt against the official scheme and explain where credit was lost. A tutor may not sit beside a student during an assessed task, supply answers to live assessed work, or hand over a completed solution for submission. We will not do that, and a tutor who offers to is a liability to the student rather than a shortcut.

The regulatory position is worth knowing precisely because competitors leave it out. Private tutoring in the UAE requires a work permit issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals who tutor without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount should be quoted to you by anyone.

In Abu Dhabi there is a further layer. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules indicates that private and charter school staff are prohibited from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and that staff tutoring outside school hours must hold the MoHRE permit, whose code of conduct bars serving students affiliated with their own school. Verify that against the current ADEK policy document before relying on it, but the practical advice is simple: never arrange paid tuition with your child's own class teacher.

IB Gram holds no accreditation, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, and is not an approved centre of any kind. We are an independent matching platform. The regulators above are named here because knowing what each does helps a parent ask better questions, not because any of them endorses us.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Nahyan

Al Nahyan families do not treat the district as a boundary. Children attend schools across the island and out along the mainland corridor, and parents comparing tuition options are usually also looking at the neighbourhoods below. Online delivery makes the comparison moot, which is the point.

Al Bateen

The older western side of the island, with several long-established British and American curriculum schools inside a short drive. A 4pm start is realistic for families here; it is not for anyone travelling back from the mainland.

Saadiyat Island

Low-density, high-fee schooling with an IB-heavy profile. Families on Saadiyat and in Al Nahyan often want the same maths specialist, and the specification matters far more than the postcode either of them lives in.

Al Reem Island

Dense towers with a growing school presence. Lift waits and basement parking make an in-home visit expensive in time for a visiting tutor, which is one reason the market rate for a home visit here carries a travel premium.

the Corniche

Apartment living with the shortest school runs on the island. Even so, a sibling collection at two different finish times is the usual constraint on a weekday tuition slot, not distance.

Khalifa City

A major school cluster on the mainland side of the bridges. Al Nahyan students are among those travelling out to it daily, and a 2:45pm finish there can mean a 3:40pm arrival home.

Al Raha Beach

Beachfront apartments along the Abu Dhabi to Dubai corridor, feeding the Al Raha and Khalifa City schools. Families here and in Al Nahyan ask the same question about session timing and get the same answer.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

A large mainland residential district with its own schools and a long commute to the island. The tutor pool available in person thins noticeably here, which makes the online option less a compromise than a correction.

Al Mushrif

Central island, close to several of the emirate's oldest private schools. Students here sit the same 0580 and 4MA1 papers as students in Al Nahyan, on the same timetable, in the same zone.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Nahyan

Khalifa City, Al Raha and the mainland corridor

Many Al Nahyan families drive out to this corridor every morning. These schools run a mix of British and IB curricula and their finish times are the reason a 4pm tuition slot is usually unrealistic for a student travelling back across the bridges.

The first exchange establishes board, tier, papers and whether a calculator is permitted. Cambridge 0580, Cambridge 0607 and Pearson 4MA1 lead to three different revision plans, so nothing useful can be scheduled before this is settled. If you are unsure, the school's exams officer can confirm it.

  2. 02

    Read the last marked paper

Send the most recent marked mock or internal assessment. A specialist reads it question by question and categorises every lost mark as content, method, technique or misread command. That single document usually explains the grade better than an hour of conversation about it.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson with the matched tutor

One live video lesson, with the diagnosis already in hand, so the hour is spent teaching rather than getting acquainted. You decide afterwards whether to continue. No card is required and nothing renews automatically if you choose not to.

  4. 04

Set a cadence and a review point

Weekly one-to-one, an intensive block, or a short topic-repair course, with a stated review date. At that point we look at the error log and the marked work rather than at how the lessons felt, and change the plan if the marks are not moving.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

The specification is matched before the tutor is

A tutor who has taught 0580 Extended is not interchangeable with one who has taught 4MA1 Higher. We establish which paper your child sits first, then match, which removes the most common reason tuition produces no measurable change.

Marking against the official scheme, not self-assessment

Students systematically misgrade their own work in both directions. Written work is marked against the published mark scheme for the relevant series, so the feedback is about where credit was available rather than about whether the answer looked right.

Live video rather than a travelling tutor

Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi — that is an India-only service — which means an Al Nahyan family draws on specialists by subject and specification rather than by driving distance.

Honest limits, stated before you pay

No tutor can promise a grade, and anyone who does should be treated with real scepticism. We say what a block of lessons can plausibly fix, what needs a term, and what has run out of time, before a schedule is agreed.

Figures you can check

Every AED band on this page is attributed to a published market source and dated. Nothing here is presented as our price list, and no statistic appears without a date and a source behind it.

Scheduling built around the Al Nahyan school day

Finish times across the island and the mainland corridor vary by more than an hour, and a sibling collection usually decides the slot. Sessions are set to what the household can actually sustain weekly, including post-Iftar timing during Ramadan.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Nahyan: your questions answered

Which IGCSE maths specification does my child in Al Nahyan actually sit?+

That depends entirely on the school, and it is the first thing to establish. Abu Dhabi schools commonly use Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, Cambridge International Mathematics 0607 or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics A, code 4MA1. The school's exams officer can confirm the code and the tier in one email. The codes are not cosmetic: 0580 includes a paper with no calculator, 4MA1 allows a calculator throughout and supplies a formula sheet, and 0607 is built around a graphic display calculator. Revision that suits one is partly wasted on another.

Does an IGCSE maths tutor come to our apartment in Al Nahyan?+

Not through IB Gram. We deliver one-to-one IGCSE maths tuition over live video, scheduled on Gulf Standard Time, and we do not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE — home visiting is a service we run only in India. Independent home tutors in Abu Dhabi do visit, and the market prices that convenience at roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour depending on the source. What online delivery buys instead is choice: a tutor who teaches your child's exact specification, rather than whoever is free within a short drive.

How long does it take to move an IGCSE maths grade?+

It depends on what is wrong, and that is why the diagnosis comes first. Procedural faults — frequency density, scale factors, rounding too early, abandoning multi-part questions — are often worth a double-digit mark swing and take a lesson plus practice each. Conceptual gaps such as function notation or vectors take several weeks of teaching. A tier-level change in underlying fluency takes a term or more. No tutor can promise a grade, and a plan that cannot say which category your child's problem falls into is not a plan.

Is the non-calculator paper really that different to prepare for?+

Yes, and it is the single biggest divergence between the main specifications. A Cambridge 0580 candidate sits a paper with no calculator and therefore needs fluent fraction work, surds, exact forms, mental estimation and confident long arithmetic. A Pearson 4MA1 candidate has a calculator on both papers and needs different habits: storing intermediate values to avoid rounding errors, using statistical functions correctly, and checking the angle mode. A student preparing for the wrong one of these has spent real hours on a skill their paper will not isolate.

When is it too late to change my child from Core to Extended?+

Practically, once the school has submitted its final entry. Entries close months before the paper is sat, and a change afterwards is difficult and sometimes impossible. There is a second, softer deadline: the Extended tier covers content Core classes may never have been taught, so a move needs enough time for that teaching to happen as well as the administrative change. Ask the maths department two questions — when the entry is submitted, and how much Extended-only content has been covered — and work backwards from the earlier of the two.

What does Additional Mathematics 0606 add, and does my child need it?+

Cambridge Additional Mathematics 0606 is an optional qualification taken alongside Extended 0580 by students heading for A Level Mathematics or a Higher Level IB maths course. It introduces calculus, logarithms, binomial expansion and harder trigonometry a year early. It is not required for either route, but it makes the transition noticeably less abrupt. Students who manage Extended comfortably but find 0606 punishing are nearly always short of algebraic stamina rather than ability, which is a specific and fixable gap.

Which exam series can a candidate in Abu Dhabi actually sit?+

Cambridge runs its IGCSE examinations in a June series and a November series, and those are the two available to UAE candidates; the February/March series is offered in India only. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs in May/June and November each year. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones and warns that the correct zone timetable must be used, because it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who sit the wrong version. Always read the live official timetable rather than a summary on any tutoring website, including this one.

Should we book weekly lessons or a short intensive block before the exam?+

Weekly lessons move content and fluency; an intensive block moves technique. If the mock showed topics genuinely not known, weekly work across a term is the honest answer, because content cannot be compressed indefinitely. If the mock showed the content broadly present but marks leaking through misread commands, early rounding and poor timing, a short block of timed papers marked against the official scheme does more in four weeks than a term of topic teaching would. The marked script tells you which case you are in.

Can one tutor cover 0580 maths and a Cambridge science for an Al Nahyan student?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking rather than assuming. A tutor who teaches Extended 0580 and Cambridge Physics 0625 can genuinely do both, and there is real value in one person seeing where the maths weakness is damaging the physics. What does not work is stretching a single tutor across four unrelated subjects to simplify scheduling. Where a second specialist is needed we say so, and where no UAE-based specialist covers a niche combination we will tell you that too rather than filling the slot.

How do we check that a private tutor in Abu Dhabi is permitted to teach?+

Ask to see the MoHRE private tuition work permit. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and the permit is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Anyone tutoring without one is subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. A tutor who deflects the question has answered it.

Can my child's own maths teacher tutor them privately?+

In Abu Dhabi, that should be treated as closed. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules indicates private and charter school staff are barred from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Verify the current ADEK policy document before relying on the detail, but the practical position is clear: arrange tuition with an independent specialist, not with the person who teaches and assesses your child in class.

What does the mark scheme notation on a returned paper mean?+

Method marks reward a correct approach even when the arithmetic afterwards fails. Accuracy marks require the correct value, rounded as asked. Follow-through credit allows a correct later step to score even when it rests on an earlier wrong answer, provided the working is visible. Special-case credit covers particular near-misses the examiners chose to reward. The behavioural lesson for a student is short: show the substitution, keep full accuracy until the end, use any answer the question gives you, and cross out rather than erase.

Do IGCSE maths rates in Abu Dhabi rise closer to the exam series?+

Availability tightens rather than headline rates moving much. In the weeks before a series the specialist tutors fill first, so families booking late choose from a smaller pool at the upper end of the published bands — roughly AED 200 to 450 and above for specialist support, per the Bestimate Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 survey. The practical consequence for an Al Nahyan family is that a decision made a term early costs the same and buys a better match. Booking in the final fortnight mostly buys exam technique.

Will a tutor help with my child's maths coursework or assessed tasks?+

A tutor teaches the content, models methods, marks your child's own attempts against the published scheme and explains where credit was lost. A tutor does not sit alongside a student during an assessed task, supply solutions for live assessed work, or hand over finished work for submission. We decline that, because under board regulations it puts the student's own entry at risk. The boundary is not a technicality: the work submitted has to be the student's, and a tutor's value is in making that work better before it is submitted.

What happens if no specialist is free for our preferred time slot?+

We say so rather than filling the slot with a generalist. Demand for Extended 0580 and Higher 4MA1 specialists concentrates in the late-afternoon Gulf Standard Time window, which is exactly when Al Nahyan families want lessons. The options are usually a slightly earlier or later weekday slot, a weekend session, or a short wait for a named tutor. Where no UAE-based specialist covers the combination at all, we will tell you that and explain what the alternative looks like before you commit to anything.

Start with the paper your child is actually sitting

If you take one thing from this page, make it the first question: which specification, which tier, which papers. Send the code and the most recent marked script, and a specialist will read it question by question before the trial lesson, so the hour is spent teaching rather than getting acquainted. Lessons run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, scheduled around the Al Nahyan school run. The trial is one lesson, you decide afterwards, and nothing starts automatically. The figures on this page belong to the market and are dated so that you can check them yourself.
