IB Home Tutor in Al Nahyan

Before you hire an IB home tutor in Al Nahyan, it is worth comparing the options properly: an in-home visit against an online session, a paid tutor against the school clinic you already fund, and any tutor's claims against what can actually be verified. Most tutoring pages compare themselves with an unnamed rival. This one compares the real alternatives, including doing nothing. Lessons run one-to-one online over live video in Gulf Standard Time, starting with a free trial and no card taken.

  • The MoHRE private tuition work permit can be asked for and shown
  • Examiner status cannot be verified, so we do not claim it
  • A KHDA Educational Services Permit applies to centres, not to us
  • School clinics are already covered by the fees you pay

IB & IGCSE in Al Nahyan

Compared with what?

Al Nahyan runs inland across the middle of Abu Dhabi island, between Al Karamah and the eastern edge, a mix of villas and low-rise apartment blocks with Airport Road along one side. It is unremarkable in the way most good residential districts are, and families here looking for Diploma support face the same decision as everyone else on the island: not whether to hire someone, but what to compare that hire against.

The comparison tutoring pages make is always the same and always useless: themselves against other platforms, unnamed and conveniently worse. The comparisons a parent in Al Nahyan actually needs are different. An in-home visit against an online session, on the things that genuinely differ. A paid tutor against the school's own clinic, which is already covered by the fees you pay. One subject funded properly against three funded thinly. And, most usefully, any tutor's claims against what can be independently checked, because this market is full of assertions that cannot be. That last comparison is the one that saves the most money and the least often made, because it requires knowing which questions have answers a parent can actually check.

Take the in-home question first, since it is the phrase that brought you here. Published in-home one-to-one rates across the emirate run roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour, against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online subject tutor and AED 200 to 450 and above for a specialist. The difference is a journey: inland Al Nahyan means crossing Airport Road or coming off the mainland at the hour traffic is worst, and that premium buys road time rather than teaching. It also buys variance, because the third or fourth traffic cancellation is usually where a family loses the week's rhythm.

On that point we are direct rather than coy. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. Every UAE session runs one-to-one online over live video with a shared screen. We would rather state that on the page than take a booking and explain it afterwards, and the trade is real: dropping the travel requirement means your child is matched from everyone who teaches their exact Diploma subject at their exact level rather than from everyone willing to drive inland on a Tuesday.

What follows is a set of honest comparisons. Where the tutors in this market actually live and what that does to a quote. In-home against online on six specific concerns rather than in general. A tutor against the free alternatives, including the option of buying nothing. Which subject groups genuinely repay one-to-one. And a short guide to separating a verifiable claim from an unverifiable one, which is the most useful skill a parent can acquire in this market.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Comparing the programmes matters because an Al Nahyan family often has children on two of them, and the support that helps one is not the support that helps another. The structures differ more than the shared IB name suggests.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1 to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

No external examinations, assessed through units of inquiry, a portfolio and the Year 6 Exhibition. Compared with the later programmes there is no mark scheme to teach to, so what is bought is fluency, reading stamina and the habit of explaining a method, plus the research skills the Exhibition rewards.

Children arriving into an Abu Dhabi PYP school from a worksheet-driven system usually find the inquiry structure unfamiliar before they find the content hard. Compared with a content-based intervention, time spent on explaining reasoning aloud is far better value at this stage.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

Four criteria per subject, each out of eight, with command terms rewarding explanation over recall, and a Personal Project in Year 10 or 11. Compared with IGCSE, assessment is continuous rather than terminal, which means there is no single series to revise for and no obvious moment of pressure.

Because there is no external series, MYP support is easy to postpone indefinitely. Compared with a DP1 intervention it is dramatically cheaper, and the subject and level choices made at the end of Year 11 are the most consequential dated decision in the programme.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects with three at Higher Level, scored out of 45, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Every subject carries internal assessment worth 20 to 30 per cent. Compared with a three-subject post-16 route, the Diploma spreads a student thinner and rewards organisation as much as ability.

Abu Dhabi IB schools sit the May session, with November as the alternative. No IB examination or results date appears here, because ibo.org blocks automated verification and an unverified date a family plans around is worse than none.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

Fewer DP courses alongside a career-related study, a reflective project and a core of personal and professional skills. Compared with the full Diploma the overall load is lighter, while the DP courses inside it are examined to exactly the same standard, so subject support needs are identical.

CP cohorts in Abu Dhabi are small, which means schools sometimes cannot staff individual subject help at depth. Compared with a full Diploma student, a CP student's one or two DP courses carry a greater share of the programme's external weight.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The subjects below are the ones Al Nahyan families ask about most, described by what each assesses and, where it matters, by how much difference one-to-one attention actually makes compared with good class teaching.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Papers 1 and 2 at 40 per cent each at SL; 30, 30 and 20 with Paper 3 at HL, plus a 20 per cent Exploration. One-to-one makes a large difference here, because the recurring losses are individual habits: unshown method, premature rounding, sign errors through long work.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Calculator-active, built on statistics, probability and modelling, with matrices and graph theory at Higher Level. One-to-one helps most on the interpretive sentence that carries marks, which is hard to teach to a whole class and easy to coach individually.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Paper 1 multiple choice, Paper 2 structured response, Scientific Investigation at 20 per cent. Energetics sign conventions and uncertainty evaluation reward individual attention; the practical programme itself belongs to the school and cannot be replaced.

Physics

HL and SL

Derivation-heavy, with graphs read for physical quantities. The gap between quoting a formula and naming the assumption that validates it is exactly the sort of thing a class cannot chase individually and a tutor can close in a few sessions.

Biology

HL and SL

Content volume concealing one skill: applying a named process to an unfamiliar context under command-term discipline. Compared with maths, more of the work here is a revision method the student can apply alone once taught, which argues for a shorter block.

Economics

HL and SL

Three Internal Assessment commentaries of 800 words each plus papers rewarding labelled diagrams and developed evaluation. Evaluation technique responds very well to individual coaching, because it is a writing habit rather than a body of knowledge.

Business Management

HL and SL

Case-study driven with an 1,800-word Higher Level internal assessment on a real organisation. Tools earn nothing in isolation; application earns the marks. Quantitative sections are routinely skipped in revision and routinely appear in the papers.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Unseen analysis in Paper 1, comparative essay in Paper 2, an internally assessed Individual Oral, and an HL essay of 1,200 to 1,500 words. The habit of narrating rather than analysing takes months to change, so start early or choose a different subject to fund.

Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay

Core

A TOK essay of up to 1,600 words on a prescribed title, an exhibition with commentaries totalling up to 950 words, and a 4,000-word Extended Essay marked out of 34 with Critical Thinking worth 12. Both contribute to the three bonus points.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, compared by what each one is actually for. Most Al Nahyan Diploma requests are answered by the first; the other two exist for specific, time-limited jobs.

Weekly one-to-one, one subject

A single fixed hour each week in one subject at one level. Compared with the alternatives it buys continuity, which is the mechanism by which tutoring works at all: the tutor knows what last week's gap was and verifies that it closed rather than rediscovering it.

  • One subject, one level, one tutor, one hour
  • Shared screen for working past-paper questions in real time
  • A short written note after each session saying what was covered

Core component block

Three to five sessions around the Extended Essay, an Exploration, a Scientific Investigation or the TOK essay, then finished. Compared with a standing arrangement it is time-limited and aimed at a component with a published length and published criteria. The student writes every word.

  • Focus interrogated before any work is invested in it
  • Criterion-referenced feedback on the student's own draft
  • The school supervisor remains the authority on the task

Examination-term intensive

Two or three sessions a week across a defined window before mocks or the May session, almost entirely timed papers marked to the official scheme. Compared with the weekly format it costs more per week, runs for less time, and cannot close content gaps spanning two years.

  • Full papers under examination timing
  • An error log so the same mistake is not re-taught
  • A finish date agreed before the first session

01

Where the tutors actually live, and what that does to a quote

An in-home quote is a teaching rate plus a travel rate, and nobody itemises it. That means two Al Nahyan families with identical needs can be quoted very different hourly figures depending on an accident of where the tutor happens to live, and neither family ever sees why.

The geography is straightforward. A tutor in Al Karamah or Al Mushrif is a few minutes away and quotes near the bottom of the published AED 180 to 500 band. A tutor coming from Al Zahiyah crosses the island at the worst hour. A tutor on Al Reem Island adds a bridge. A tutor in Khalifa City or Mussafah is pricing a genuinely long round trip, and that is where the top of the band comes from. None of this correlates with Diploma subject knowledge, which is distributed according to where experienced teachers happen to live rather than according to who is convenient.

There is a second, quieter effect. A tutor who makes several visits in an evening is pricing a route, not a lesson, and your session sits somewhere in that sequence. If an earlier visit overruns, yours starts late or finishes early, and neither is reflected in the invoice. Over a term, the delivered teaching time can differ noticeably from the paid teaching time, and in an inland district with one main artery that is not a theoretical concern.

Removing travel removes both effects. An online slot has hard edges: it starts when it starts and runs for the hour. And the tutor is selected from everyone who teaches your child's subject at their level rather than from the subset whose route happens to include Al Nahyan. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India.

In-home against online, on the six things parents actually ask about

General comparisons are useless because they let each side claim the ground it prefers. Six specific concerns come up in almost every Al Nahyan conversation, and each has a different answer.

On who is available, online wins decisively, because the pool stops being defined by driving range. On cost, online wins on published figures: AED 150 to 300 for a qualified subject tutor against AED 180 to 500 in-home. On reliability, online wins again, because nothing depends on Airport Road. On working through a past paper, online is at least equal and arguably better: a shared screen shows the same line to both people at the same size and the annotated script survives the session.

On two concerns in-home genuinely wins. The first is a student who will not sit down and work without a person physically present. That is a real category, it has nothing to do with intelligence, and for those students the social pressure of someone in the room is the product. The second is the very young, where attention and rapport are harder to hold through a screen, though this matters much less for a Diploma student than for a primary child.

The sixth concern is the one parents raise last and worry about most: whether a student will actually engage. The honest answer is that it depends on the student and on the tutor's ability to hold a session, not on the medium, and the only way to find out is one trial lesson. That is why the trial is free, requires no card, and is built around a diagnostic rather than an introduction: it answers the only question that cannot be answered from a page.

A paid tutor compared with the free alternatives

The comparison nobody selling tutoring wants to make is against the options that cost nothing. There are three, and for a meaningful number of Al Nahyan families one of them is the right answer.

The first is the school's own support. Almost every school in the emirate runs some form of after-school clinic, departmental help or targeted intervention, already covered by the fees you pay. It is routinely under-used, partly because parents ask vaguely. Asking the head of department about a specific topic, naming what was lost in the last assessment, often produces either a useful answer or a solved problem. The limitation is that a department cannot give one student sustained individual attention, which is the thing a tutor actually sells.

The second is fixing the working environment, which costs nothing and changes more than an hour a week. A student revising on a sofa with a phone within reach is not revising. A student rereading notes is generating familiarity rather than recall, which is why hard-working students plateau for a year and conclude they are bad at the subject. Teaching retrieval practice under timed conditions takes one session, or one honest conversation, and then the student applies it alone.

The third is diagnosis without purchase. Ask the school what the last assessment was marked against and which specific marks were lost. A detailed answer may make a tutor unnecessary. A vague answer tells you why your child cannot explain the problem either, which is itself worth knowing. A tutor becomes the right comparison when the gap needs individual time the class cannot give, when the problem is examination technique rather than content, or when confidence has gone to the point where the student no longer asks questions.

What two parents mean by "home tutor", compared

  • "Home tutor" as delivery: someone physically present, priced at AED 180-500
  • "Home tutor" as supervision: keeping a student on task, a different and cheaper service
  • "Home tutor" as private: one-to-one subject expertise, which is the actual product
  • Insisting on presence makes expertise the variable that gives way
  • We provide the third, online, and say so before any payment

The phrase carries at least three different meanings in Abu Dhabi, and a conversation between a parent and a provider frequently proceeds with each meaning something else. Separating them removes most of the confusion in this market.

The first meaning is literal: someone who physically comes to the house. That is a delivery method, and it is what the published AED 180 to 500 band prices. The second meaning is supervisory: an adult who sits with a child while they do their homework, keeps them on task and answers questions as they arise. That is genuinely useful for some students and is a different service from subject teaching, usually at a lower rate, and it does not require Diploma subject expertise.

The third meaning, and the one most parents actually want when they say it, is private: one-to-one attention from someone who knows the subject, as distinct from being one of twenty-five in a classroom. That is the product. The house was historically just where it happened, because there was nowhere else for it to happen. Once the lesson can run over live video, the private part survives and the house part becomes optional.

Being clear which one you want changes what you should buy. If the need is supervision, a Diploma specialist at the specialist rate is an expensive way to get it, and the right answer may be a structured study routine rather than a tutor. If the need is subject expertise, insisting on physical presence restricts you to whoever will travel to Al Nahyan that evening and makes the expertise the variable that gives way. We say plainly which we provide: one-to-one subject teaching, online, with no home visits anywhere in the UAE.

05

Where one-to-one makes the biggest difference, group by group

Not every Diploma subject repays individual attention equally, and a family with one budget should know which ones do. The pattern is consistent enough to be worth stating, and it cuts against the instinct to fund the subject the student complains about.

Mathematics repays it most, because its losses are individual habits rather than gaps in knowledge: method not shown where the mark scheme awards it separately, premature rounding, sign errors through long work, a specific topic cluster never consolidated. A class cannot chase one student's habits. A tutor can see them in a single marked script and change them in a fortnight.

The sciences come next, and the reason is the Scientific Investigation. Twenty per cent of the grade sits in a piece of work where the commonest failure is a method that cannot generate analysable data, and that is caught in conversation at the planning stage rather than in a classroom. The written papers also reward naming the assumption behind a formula, which is exactly the sort of thing one-to-one questioning exposes quickly.

The content-heavy subjects repay it least, which surprises families. Biology, history and geography need a revision method more than they need a teacher, and the method can be taught once and applied alone. English sits apart: individual attention helps enormously with the habit of analysing rather than narrating, but that habit takes months to change, so it is worth starting early or not at all. Economics and Business Management are strong candidates for a short late block, because evaluation technique is learnable in a defined window close to the papers.

06

Comparing a tutor's claims with what you can actually verify

This is the most useful comparison on the page, because the Abu Dhabi tutoring market runs on assertions and only some of them can be checked. Sorting them is a skill a parent acquires once and uses forever.

Verifiable: the MoHRE private tuition work permit. Introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, with eligible applicants including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, school students aged 15 to 18 and university students. You can ask to see it, and a tutor confused by the question is worth a second look. Note what it does not prove: it is a right-to-work instrument, not a statement about whether someone can teach Chemistry HL.

Also verifiable: course knowledge, through specific questions. What is the Exploration worth and how is it marked. What is in Paper 3 and does my child sit it. Which paper is non-calculator. Those answers are instant for someone who has taught the course and vague for someone who has not. And verifiable: subject and level, which a parent can check directly against the school timetable.

Not verifiable, and therefore not claimed here: examiner status, which we cannot evidence for an individual and which in any case should never be used to imply access to marking, boundaries or paper content. Regulator accreditation, because a KHDA Educational Services Permit is issued to a training institute with premises and IB Gram does not hold one; nor do we hold or claim approval from ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson. Star ratings and review counts, unless they are real, countable and attributable. Tutor headcounts. And statistics without a stated sample, date and method, which includes every satisfaction percentage you will see in this market.

07

The first eight weeks compared with the next eight

  • Block one: find the causes, fix the cheap ones, re-test with a second script
  • Block two should feel harder, because the easy marks are already banked
  • A second block that feels identical to the first is aimed at nothing
  • Stop when the causes identified at the start have gone
  • A tutor recommending you stop is giving you the strongest possible signal

Families decide whether tutoring is working somewhere around week five, usually on a feeling. Comparing what the first block should produce with what a second block should produce makes that judgement evidential rather than emotional.

The first eight sessions are mostly about finding and fixing. Session one is a timed diagnostic marked against the published scheme, with losses sorted by cause rather than topic. Sessions two to seven address the largest identified cluster and the technique losses, with marked work produced every time. Session eight repeats the diagnostic. What should exist at the end is two scripts that can be laid side by side, an error log and a decision. What should not exist is a sense that things feel better with nothing to point at.

A second block, if it happens, should look different. The cheap wins have gone: compliance losses, rounding, unshown method. What remains is either genuine content depth or a harder technique problem such as pacing across a full paper or the quality of evaluation writing. Progress in a second block is slower and the sessions should feel more demanding, which is a sign it is aimed at the right thing. A second block that feels identical to the first is a second block aimed at nothing.

The comparison also tells you when to stop, which is the decision nobody sets up in advance. If the causes identified at the start have gone, the work is done. If your child begins answering the tutor's diagnostic questions before they are finished, the session has become supervised practice they could do alone for nothing. Either is a signal to finish, and a tutor who says so unprompted has told you something useful about their intentions.

08

The Diploma compared with the routes a family might switch to

A minority of Al Nahyan conversations are not about tutoring at all but about whether the Diploma is the right programme. That is a legitimate question and it deserves a comparison rather than a defence, since tutoring cannot fix a structural mismatch between a student and a programme.

The Diploma spreads a student across six subjects with three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, with internal assessment in every subject. It rewards organisation, consistency and writing as much as subject ability, and it punishes a student who can only concentrate on what is immediately due. A three-subject A Level route concentrates on fewer subjects with most of the weight in terminal examinations, which suits a strong examination performer who dislikes coursework. An American high school diploma distributes grades across continuous assessment and a wider subject spread, with external testing largely separate from the school's own grading.

Switching is possible and expensive, and the cost is not mainly financial. A student moving out of the Diploma mid-course usually loses the internal assessment work already done, because it does not transfer, and may lose a year. A student moving in faces content gaps across six subjects at once. The window where a switch is genuinely low-cost is between Year 11 and Year 12, which is before most families have enough evidence to want one.

What tutoring can honestly contribute to that decision is evidence rather than an opinion. A marked timed paper shows whether a student's difficulty is content, technique or workload management. If it is workload management across six subjects plus the core, more tutoring in one subject will not help, and saying so is more useful than selling a weekly session into a structural problem.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Nahyan

These districts are where the tutors in this market actually live, which is the comparison that determines what an Al Nahyan family gets quoted for an in-home visit.

Al Karamah

Immediately west along Karamah Street. A tutor based here quotes Al Nahyan a few minutes' drive, which puts their in-home rate near the bottom of the published band for no reason connected to teaching quality.

Al Mushrif

South-west and villa-heavy, with long-established campuses nearby. Also a short hop, and also a district whose tutors therefore appear cheaper to Al Nahyan families than they would to a family across a bridge.

Al Khalidiyah

West towards the Corniche and considerably denser. A tutor crossing from here at five in the afternoon is pricing dense island traffic, which is where quotes begin to climb within the same band.

Al Zahiyah

The island's north-east quarter. The cross-island run to Al Nahyan at the start of an evening is a real journey, and its cost appears in a quote as a higher hourly figure for identical work.

Al Reem Island

Across the bridge east. Bridge crossings are the clearest dividing line in in-home pricing, because a tutor is quoting an uncertain round trip rather than a predictable hop.

Khalifa City

On the mainland with large campuses of its own, and home to a substantial share of the emirate's experienced teachers. Exactly the people who would be unavailable in person and perfectly available online.

Mussafah and Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Further out on the mainland. The distance makes the point this page keeps returning to: a tutor pool bounded by driving range is small, and small pools cost more per unit of genuine expertise.

School ecosystem

Students we support from Al Nahyan attend schools across the inland island districts, some of which are among the longest-established in the emirate. Private schools in Abu Dhabi are licensed and inspected by ADEK, which publishes its own inspection outcomes.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Decide which kind of help you actually want

Subject expertise, supervision, or a specific component such as the Extended Essay. Those are three different purchases at three different rates, and the phrase home tutor covers all of them, which is why conversations in this market so often talk past each other.

  2. 02

    Exhaust the free comparisons first

The school's clinic, the working environment, and asking what the last assessment was marked against. Any of the three may solve the problem at no cost, and we would rather point you there than sell you something you did not need.

Verify the verifiable, ignore the rest

Ask to see the MoHRE permit and ask the course-specific questions about the Exploration, Paper 3 and calculator policy. Discount examiner claims, star ratings, tutor headcounts and any statistic without a sample size, date and method.

  4. 04

    Take the free trial lesson

One session at no cost with no card required, built around a past-paper diagnostic. It answers the one question no page can: whether your child engages with this particular tutor. If not, we rematch rather than persuade you to continue.

  5. 05

Compare two scripts at session eight

Repeat the diagnostic and lay the two marked papers side by side. Continue, change focus, change tutor, or finish. A comparison settles it in minutes; an exchange of impressions never does, which is why the measure is agreed before the teaching starts.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We compare against the real alternatives

Including the school clinic you already pay for and the option of buying nothing. Every researched competitor page in this market compares itself with an unnamed and conveniently worse rival, which tells a parent nothing they can act on.

Only verifiable claims appear here

The MoHRE permit can be shown. Course knowledge can be tested in four questions. Examiner status, regulator accreditation, star ratings and satisfaction percentages cannot be verified, so they do not appear. IB Gram holds no approval from any board or regulator.

No travel in the price

Lessons run one-to-one over live video. IB Gram does not visit UAE homes; home visits are offered only in India. Published in-home rates run AED 180 to 500 an hour against AED 150 to 300 online, and in an inland district the gap is Airport Road at the worst hour.

We say which subjects do not repay one-to-one

Content-heavy subjects usually need a revision method rather than a teacher, and English needs an early start or none at all. Naming the subjects where a weekly session is poor value costs us sessions and is the honest version of the advice.

The core boundary is published

A tutor interrogates a focus, teaches criteria and gives feedback on drafts the student wrote. Nobody drafts an Extended Essay, Exploration or TOK essay. Completed Internal Assessments are sold in this market, and the consequence of buying one falls on the student's Diploma.

Stopping is a named outcome

When the causes identified in the first diagnostic have gone, we will say the work is done. An arrangement that outlives the problem it was bought to solve is the most expensive thing in tutoring and the easiest for a provider to ignore.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Nahyan: your questions answered

Why would two Al Nahyan families be quoted different in-home rates?+

Because an in-home quote is a teaching rate plus an unitemised travel rate. A tutor in Al Karamah is a few minutes away and quotes near the bottom of the published AED 180 to 500 band; one in Khalifa City or Mussafah is pricing a thirty to fifty minute round trip and quotes near the top. The teaching is identical. Nothing in that spread correlates with Diploma subject knowledge, which is distributed according to where experienced teachers happen to live.

Is there any situation where an in-home tutor genuinely beats online?+

Two. A student who will not sit down and work without a person physically present, which is a real category unrelated to intelligence and for whom the social presence is the product. And very young children, where attention and rapport are harder to hold through a screen, which matters far less for a Diploma student. On availability, cost, reliability and past-paper work, online is better. IB Gram does not visit UAE homes in any case; home visits are a service offered only in India.

What exactly can we verify about a tutor before paying anything?+

Two things reliably. The MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, granted free of charge for two years, which you can ask to see. And course knowledge, through specific questions: what the Exploration is worth and how it is marked, what is in Paper 3 and whether your child sits it, which paper is non-calculator. Those answers are instant for someone who has taught the course. Everything else in this market is largely assertion.

Another service says it is approved by KHDA. Should that reassure us?+

No, it should concern you. A KHDA Educational Services Permit is a specific licence issued to a training institute with premises in Dubai, with initial approval first and a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps. It is not something an online tutoring service or an individual tutor holds. We hold no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from KHDA, ADEK, SPEA, the Ministry of Education, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and we do not claim any.

What about a tutor described as a current IB examiner?+

Treat it as unverifiable unless evidence is produced, because there is no public register a parent can check. More importantly, examiner status should never be used to imply access to marking, grade boundaries or paper content, and a provider leaning on it that way is making an improper suggestion. We do not describe tutors as examiners, because we cannot evidence the status for an individual. Ask the course-specific questions instead; they test the same thing more honestly.

Could the school's own support solve this without us paying anyone?+

Quite possibly, and it is worth exhausting first because it is already covered by your fees. Most schools in the emirate run after-school clinics, departmental help or targeted intervention. Ask the head of department about the specific topic, naming the marks lost in the last assessment, rather than raising a general worry. The limitation is that a department cannot give one student sustained individual attention, which is precisely the thing a tutor sells and the only thing worth paying for.

Which Diploma subjects are the worst value for one-to-one tuition?+

Content-heavy subjects, generally: biology, history and geography. Their difficulty is usually volume, and the fix is a revision method that can be taught once and then applied alone, rather than a weekly teacher. English is a particular case: individual attention helps enormously with the habit of analysing rather than narrating, but that habit takes months to change, so start early or fund something else. Mathematics and the sciences repay one-to-one most, because their losses are individual habits.

When we say "home tutor", are we asking for the right thing?+

It depends which of three things you mean. Delivery, meaning someone physically present, which is what the AED 180 to 500 band prices. Supervision, meaning an adult who keeps a child on task during homework, which is a useful and cheaper service needing no Diploma expertise. Or private, meaning one-to-one attention from someone who knows the subject, which is what most parents actually want. The house was historically just where the third one happened, and online delivery separates the two.

How do we judge whether the first block of sessions worked?+

By comparing two marked scripts rather than two impressions. Session one should produce a timed diagnostic marked against the published scheme, with losses sorted by cause rather than topic. Session eight repeats it. Lay them side by side, with the error log from the weeks between. If the causes identified at the start have reduced, it worked. If nothing has moved, the plan targeted the wrong gap or the match is wrong, and both are the provider's problem to fix.

Should a second block feel the same as the first?+

No, it should feel harder, and that is the sign it is aimed correctly. The first block takes the cheap wins: compliance losses, rounding discipline, method marks, one diagnosed topic cluster. What remains afterwards is genuine content depth or a harder technique problem such as pacing across a full paper or the quality of evaluation writing. Progress is slower. A second block that feels identical to the first is a second block aimed at nothing in particular.

Our son is drowning across all six subjects. Will a tutor help?+

Possibly not, and it is worth being honest about that. If a marked paper shows the difficulty is content or technique in one or two subjects, a tutor addresses it directly. If it shows the problem is workload management across six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service, then adding a weekly commitment makes the week worse rather than better. That conversation belongs with the school's Diploma coordinator before any money moves.

Can tutoring fix a bad fit between our daughter and the Diploma?+

No. The Diploma spreads a student across six subjects with internal assessment in each, and rewards organisation and consistent writing as much as subject ability. A student who can only work on what is immediately due will struggle with it regardless of how much individual teaching they receive. A marked paper will show whether the difficulty is content, technique or structure. If it is structure, the conversation is about the programme, and the school's coordinator is the right person to have it with.

Is a group revision class a fair comparison with one-to-one?+

For some purposes, yes. A group class is genuinely good value for cohort-wide revision shortly before the papers, and the arithmetic favours it strongly. It is poor value when a student's problem is one narrow diagnosed cluster, because a shared pace gives that topic a few minutes of the hour while the rest covers familiar ground. Diagnose with a marked paper first, then choose. Buying the cheaper instrument for the wrong problem is not a saving.

What statistics should we distrust in tutoring advertising?+

Any figure without a stated sample size, date and method. Satisfaction percentages, average score claims, improvement rates, tutor headcounts and star ratings unless they rest on real, countable, attributable reviews. Researched competitor pages in this market show different ratings in different places on the same page, and one shows a review count that does not match its own student claim. We publish no such figures, because we could not evidence them if you asked.

Compare us against the free options first

If you are weighing up an IB home tutor in Al Nahyan, the comparison worth making is not between providers. It is between a paid tutor, the school clinic you already fund, and fixing how your child revises. Try those first. If the gap still needs individual time, send the subject, the level and the hours that genuinely work, ask to see the MoHRE permit, and ask the four course questions of us and of everyone else. The first lesson is a free trial with no card required, and lessons run one-to-one online over live video in Gulf Standard Time.
