IB DP English B Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP English B tutor in Abu Dhabi is usually hired for the wrong component. Half the grade sits in one receptive-skills paper covering listening and reading, and that half is the cheapest to move with practice hours rather than specialist teaching. Published market rates across the emirate run from about AED 150 to AED 300 an hour for a qualified language teacher. Lessons are delivered one to one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

Where the money goes in English B, and where it should go

English B is a language acquisition course, and that single fact changes the economics of tutoring it. A Diploma Literature or Chemistry tutor is selling subject expertise, and the market prices expertise. An English B tutor is largely selling structured practice, feedback on register, and exposure to spoken English at examination pace. Those are real and valuable, and they do not require the top of the market. A family paying specialist rates for listening practice is paying for the wrong thing competently delivered.

The grade is split in a way most Abu Dhabi families never see written down. One paper covers productive skills, a single piece of writing in a chosen text type. The other covers receptive skills, listening and reading, and between them those two halves make up a quarter and a half of the grade respectively, with the individual oral assessment carrying the remaining quarter. So half the marks are in comprehension, which responds to volume and consistency, and a quarter is in writing, which responds to targeted feedback on a small number of pieces. Spending evenly across all three is a defensible plan. Spending evenly without knowing the split is an accident.

The expensive mistake in this subject happens before any tutor is hired. Students are placed in English A or English B at the start of DP1, and a placement that is wrong in either direction costs two years of friction. A strong English user parked in English B spends the Diploma under-challenged and may hit a ceiling in university applications. A student placed in English A who needed English B spends the same two years producing essays against literary criteria they cannot reach, and the tutoring bill climbs accordingly. Reviewing that placement in the first term is the single highest-value conversation available, and it is free: it happens with the school.

Abu Dhabi has a specific version of this problem. Diploma cohorts here commonly include students who speak English fluently in conversation and have never written formal English, students who arrived in Year 10 from a national-curriculum school, and students for whom English is a third language after Arabic and a home language. All three profiles can look identical in a classroom discussion and perform completely differently on a reading paper. A cold timed paper settles it in ninety minutes and costs one session.

This page is built around the money. It sets out the published market bands in AED and who publishes each figure, the arithmetic of a two-year commitment at those rates, which component gives the most marks per hour, the text-type conventions that make writing feedback efficient, and the proficiency requirements the Ministry of Education publishes for equivalency, so a family does not end up paying twice for the same English. Every figure is attributed, and none of them is an IB Gram price list.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Three language-acquisition routes feed Abu Dhabi Diploma classes, and each carries a different likely spend. The decision between them is made by the school, usually in the first weeks of DP1, and it is worth a parent's attention before any tutor is engaged.

Diploma Programme English B

A Group 2 language acquisition course at Standard or Higher Level, organised around five prescribed themes and a set of conceptual understandings covering audience, context, purpose, meaning and variation. Assessment is one writing task, one receptive-skills paper covering listening and reading, and an individual oral assessment. Higher Level adds two literary works studied in English.

In Abu Dhabi the English B cohort is frequently the most mixed class in the school, spanning students who need genuine language support and students who are there because English A felt risky. Those two groups need opposite plans, and a single marked reading paper separates them faster than a term of observation.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

English A, and when English B is the better route

English A is a Group 1 course for students working in their best language, marked against literary and analytical criteria. English B is a Group 2 course marked against language acquisition criteria. A student can hold a strong Diploma with either, and the choice should reflect current written proficiency rather than ambition or family preference.

The placement conversation is free and happens with the Diploma coordinator. Families in Khalifa City and on Al Reem Island frequently reach us in the second term of DP1 having spent on English A tutoring for a student whose own school had suggested English B, which is the most expensive avoidable pattern in this subject.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11 · MYP 1-5

MYP Language Acquisition into English B

MYP Language Acquisition runs in phases rather than year groups, which means two students in the same class can be working at different phases. A student finishing MYP 5 in a higher phase is a candidate for English A; one in a lower phase is better served by English B. The phase record is the most useful placement evidence a family can hold.

Where an Abu Dhabi continuum school has recorded phases, ask for them before DP subject choices are confirmed. It converts a judgement call into a documented starting point and often removes the need for any paid assessment at all.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

What an English B family actually buys hours against, with the share of the grade each carries and the honest view on how expensive it is to improve.

Paper 2: listening

HL and SL

Recorded audio with comprehension questions, sat under timed conditions. Half of the receptive paper and therefore a substantial share of the grade. It improves with volume rather than with expertise, which makes it the cheapest marks in the course to recover and the ones most often left alone.

Paper 2: reading

HL and SL

Authentic written texts with comprehension questions. Marks are lost to unfamiliar text conventions and to time, not usually to vocabulary. Practice on the specific question formats produces faster gains than general reading, and it can be done independently once the format is understood.

Paper 1: productive writing

HL and SL

One task chosen from three, written in a specified text type and within a word range that differs by level. Register and text-type conventions carry real marks, so feedback on three well-chosen pieces beats twelve unmarked ones. This is where tutoring hours are most clearly worth their rate.

Text types and their conventions

HL and SL

Blog, article, brochure, email, essay, interview, proposal, report, review, speech, set of instructions. Each has conventions of layout, address and register that an examiner expects. Learning five of them properly is more valuable than recognising all of them vaguely.

Individual oral assessment at Standard Level

Standard Level

Built on a visual stimulus linked to one of the prescribed themes, with a short presentation followed by discussion. Students who describe the image and never connect it to the theme lose marks that a single structured practice run usually recovers.

Individual oral assessment at Higher Level

Higher Level

Built on an extract from one of the two literary works studied, followed by discussion of the course themes. This is the one place where Higher Level English B resembles a literature course, and it is the component Higher Level candidates most often underestimate.

The two literary works at Higher Level

Higher Level only

Higher Level candidates study two works written in English. They are not assessed as literature in their own right, but they supply the oral extract and feed the themes, so a student who has read them attentively has a materially easier oral.

The five prescribed themes

HL and SL

Identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation and sharing the planet. Every task and every oral connects to one of them. A student who can speak for two minutes on each theme with concrete examples is prepared for most of what the course asks.

Register and audience control

HL and SL

Writing a formal proposal in the voice of a blog post is one of the commonest ways to lose marks with otherwise accurate English. It is quick to fix once named, and it is invisible to a student working alone, which is precisely what makes feedback worth paying for.

Timing and handwriting under pressure

HL and SL

Both papers are sat under time, and the word range on the writing task is binding at both ends. Students who routinely overshoot or undershoot have a planning problem that costs marks independently of their English, and it is diagnosable from one timed piece.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats are genuinely useful in English B, and they differ sharply in cost per mark. Rates quoted are published market bands from named providers, not an IB Gram price list; our own pricing follows a free trial lesson and a consultation.

Writing feedback block

Three to five sessions, each built around one piece the student has written in a specified text type. The tutor marks it for register, convention, task completion and accuracy, and the student rewrites. This is where tutoring in this subject earns its hourly rate most clearly.

  • Market band for a qualified language teacher online: roughly AED 150-300 an hour
  • One text type per session, five covered properly rather than ten vaguely
  • The student rewrites; the tutor never supplies replacement text
  • Ends with a written summary of the recurring errors

Oral preparation sessions

Two or three sessions recording and reviewing a full individual oral assessment run, on a visual stimulus at Standard Level or a literary extract at Higher Level. Short, cheap and reliably effective, because candidates almost always misjudge their own structure and length.

  • A full timed practice run recorded each session
  • Themes connected explicitly rather than implied
  • Examiner-style follow-up questions rehearsed
  • Usually complete in three sessions or fewer

Guided independent listening and reading

Not a paid format at all in the usual sense: a structured plan the student follows alone, reviewed in one session a month. Half the grade sits in this paper and it responds to volume, so paying by the hour for it is poor value when a plan plus accountability does the same work.

  • A weekly listening and reading schedule the student runs
  • Question formats taught once, then practised independently
  • One review session a month rather than weekly contact
  • The cheapest marks per dirham in the course

01

What an English B tutor costs in Abu Dhabi, and why language subjects sit lower in the band

Published rates for Diploma tutoring in this market span a wide range, and the spread reflects who is teaching rather than which subject. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45, both at the entry end for online or group work. Unitors publishes IGCSE tuition from AED 150 and IB from AED 200. TutorChase quotes AED 270. Bestimate's rate table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180 to AED 350 and subject specialists at AED 200 to AED 450 and above, while BartyED publishes AED 650 for its premium tier. Each of those is the provider's own published figure, read in October 2026, and none is an IB Gram price.

For English B the useful observation is that the top of that range buys something this course does not need. Premium rates are priced for scarce subject expertise: a Higher Level Physics specialist, an examiner-badged mathematician. English B asks for a competent, experienced language teacher who knows the five themes, the text types and the paper formats. That person sits in the AED 150 to AED 300 band, and paying above it rarely changes an outcome in this subject.

There is one exception worth naming. Higher Level English B includes two literary works and an oral built on an extract from one of them, and that part of the course does reward a teacher with literature experience. A family whose Higher Level candidate is strong on comprehension and nervous about the oral is reasonably buying a narrower, more specialised two or three sessions, and paying a higher rate for those specific hours is a defensible choice.

The format premium is separate from the expertise premium and larger than families expect. In-home delivery prices travel into the hour: Bestimate's in-home band sits above comparable online rates, and independent home tutors in this market quote up to AED 500. For an Abu Dhabi address off the island, that premium is substantially a drive. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi; tutoring here is delivered one to one over live video, and visiting tutors are a service we run only in India, which takes the travel component out of the price entirely.

The placement decision that costs more than any tutor

Before a family spends anything on English tutoring, the question worth settling is which English course the student should be in. Group 1 English A is marked against literary and analytical criteria for students working in their best language. Group 2 English B is marked against language acquisition criteria. Both can sit inside a strong Diploma, and the right answer depends on current written proficiency rather than on how fluently a student speaks at the dinner table.

Both directions of error are expensive. A student placed in English A who needed English B spends two years producing essays judged against criteria they cannot yet reach, and the tutoring bill rises as the family tries to close a gap that the course design will not allow them to close. A strong English user placed in English B may find the course comfortable and then discover that a university programme wanted evidence the Group 2 course does not provide. Neither error is a school's fault; placements are made on limited early evidence.

The honest arithmetic is worth laying out, because it is what makes this a money question rather than an academic one. One session a week across two Diploma years at the published band of AED 150 to AED 300 an hour is roughly sixty to seventy sessions, which is AED 9,000 to AED 21,000 depending on the tutor. Families who fight a placement rather than fix it often land at the upper end of that calculation. Families who settle the placement in the first term and then buy a targeted writing block plus oral preparation typically spend a small fraction of it.

Settling it costs nothing. The Diploma coordinator holds the MYP Language Acquisition phase record where there is one, the first term's marked work, and the professional judgement. A cold timed reading paper adds a hard number if the school's view and a parent's instinct disagree, and that can be done inside a free trial lesson. What a family should not do is treat the placement as fixed and buy hours against it.

Where the marks are, and which of them are cheap

English B splits across three assessed elements and they are not equally expensive to improve. The receptive-skills paper, covering listening and reading, carries half the grade. The productive writing task carries a quarter. The individual oral assessment carries the remaining quarter. That distribution is the most useful planning fact in the subject, and most families reach a tutor without having seen it.

Listening and reading improve with volume and format familiarity. A student who sits four past listening sections under timed conditions, checks them, and identifies the question types they miss will gain more than one who talks about listening strategy for four hours at AED 250. This is unusual among Diploma subjects and it is a genuine opportunity: half the grade responds to disciplined independent work, supported by a monthly review rather than weekly contact.

Writing is the opposite. A student cannot see their own register, and nobody improves a proposal they believe is already appropriate. Marked feedback on a small number of pieces, each in a different text type, each rewritten after comment, is where paid hours buy the most in this subject. Three or four well-marked pieces generally change a student's writing more than a term of practice without feedback, and that makes a short block better value than an open-ended commitment.

The oral sits in between. It needs a small number of recorded practice runs rather than ongoing teaching, because what students get wrong is structural: describing the stimulus without connecting it to a theme at Standard Level, or treating the literary extract as a comprehension exercise at Higher Level. Two or three sessions usually exhausts the available improvement, and a tutor proposing ten has misread the component.

04

Text types: the five worth learning properly

The writing paper asks for one task from a choice of three, each specifying a text type and an audience. A blog post, a formal proposal, a report, a review, a speech and a set of instructions all have different conventions of layout, address and register, and examiners expect the conventions as well as the language. Students lose marks writing accurate, fluent English in the wrong voice, which is maddening precisely because the English was fine.

The efficient approach is not to study every text type. Candidates choose their task, so a student who knows five text types confidently will almost always find one they can write well. Learning five properly, with a model structure and a register checklist for each, is a two or three session investment with a return across both papers and the oral. Learning all twelve superficially produces a student who recognises the label and still writes a letter when asked for a proposal.

Register is the part no student can self-diagnose. A seventeen-year-old who writes naturally in a conversational register will produce a proposal that opens with a greeting and a rhetorical question, and will not see anything wrong with it. A marked piece with the register problems circled is worth more than any explanation given in advance, which is the practical argument for feedback-shaped tutoring in this course rather than instruction-shaped tutoring.

Word ranges differ by level and are binding at both ends, so a Higher Level candidate who writes a Standard Level length piece has a problem independent of quality. Students should know their range as a number and should have written to it under time at least three times before the examination. Confirm the current ranges and timings with the school's Diploma coordinator, since published figures are revised between guide editions.

The individual oral, and why it differs at the two levels

  • A quarter of the grade, examined and recorded inside the school
  • Standard Level: a visual stimulus linked to a prescribed theme
  • Higher Level: an extract from one of the two literary works studied
  • Name the theme early; description without a theme scores poorly
  • Record one full timed run before the examination, then listen back

The individual oral assessment is examined inside the school and carries a quarter of the grade. At Standard Level it is built on a visual stimulus connected to one of the five prescribed themes: the candidate presents on the image for a few minutes and then discusses the theme more widely. At Higher Level it is built on an extract from one of the two literary works studied, followed by discussion of the course themes. Those are different tasks and they fail differently.

Standard Level candidates lose marks by describing. A photograph of a crowded market can be described accurately for three minutes without ever connecting to identities, social organisation or sharing the planet, and a candidate who does that has answered a question nobody asked. The fix is a one-sentence habit: name the theme in the first fifteen seconds and return to it. Practised twice, it changes the shape of the whole presentation.

Higher Level candidates lose marks by treating the extract as a comprehension passage. The task is not to explain what happens in the passage but to use it as a way into the themes, which requires having read the work and being willing to move outward from it. This is the one component in English B where a tutor with literature teaching experience is materially better than a general language teacher, and where paying a higher rate for two or three sessions is justified.

Both versions benefit from recording. A candidate who has recorded a full timed run and listened back will have discovered their own padding, their habit of restarting sentences, and whether they can actually fill the time. That is cheap, uncomfortable and effective, and because the words are the candidate's own and spoken in the examination, no authorship question arises at any point.

06

Do not pay twice: English B and the Ministry's proficiency routes

  • American track: IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61, or 450 in SAT reading and writing
  • American track mathematics: at least 450 in SAT Math
  • British track: five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or 3
  • Arabic and Islamic Education are excluded from that five-subject count
  • No IB points threshold is published here; verify on moe.gov.ae

Families in Abu Dhabi frequently run two English projects at once without noticing. There is the Diploma course, and there is whatever English evidence a university or the Ministry of Education wants for equivalency and admission. Paying separately for both, with two tutors and two sets of hours, is common and often avoidable.

The Ministry's published equivalency requirements differ by curriculum track, and the figures that are sourced are worth knowing precisely. On the American track, English proficiency requires a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT, and mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test. On the British track, candidates must show five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. No IB points threshold is published here, because we have not read one on an official Ministry page and an unsourced figure would be worse than none.

The practical consequence is a question to ask early rather than late. If your child will need an IELTS or TOEFL score anyway, the skills overlap with English B substantially: timed reading, timed listening, structured writing to a brief. A plan that treats them as one project, with the same practice serving both, costs considerably less than two separate engagements. Whether a specific university accepts English B Higher Level in place of a test is a question for that university's admissions office, and the answer varies, so ask them directly rather than assuming either way.

Equivalency itself is a Ministry process, not something a tutoring platform performs or guarantees, and tutoring is not required for it. Verify the current requirements on moe.gov.ae or through your emirate's attestation channel before making any plan that depends on them.

07

Honest arithmetic for two Diploma years

Most families want a number before they start, and the market mostly declines to give one. Three of six researched competitor pages publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars, a currency UAE parents do not transact in. The arithmetic below uses the published AED bands and states its own assumptions, so a parent can adjust it rather than trust it.

A standing weekly hour across both Diploma years is roughly sixty to seventy sessions once holidays are deducted. At the qualified-teacher band of AED 150 to AED 300 that is about AED 9,000 to AED 21,000. Monthly packages circulating in this market, around AED 799 for eight online sessions, work out lower per hour and lock in a volume the subject may not need. Bestimate's monthly estimates for a single weekly hour run AED 240 to AED 600 at the budget end and AED 600 to AED 1,200 in the middle band, which is consistent with those figures.

The targeted alternative looks very different on a spreadsheet. A placement review with the school costs nothing. One diagnostic session establishes the weak component. A writing block of four sessions, an oral block of three, and a monthly review session through the receptive-skills work across eighteen months comes to roughly fifteen to twenty paid hours, or about AED 2,250 to AED 6,000 at the same published bands. Half the grade in that plan is carried by independent practice, which is the correct answer for a comprehension paper.

Neither plan is right for every student. A candidate who will not do independent work needs the structure a weekly slot provides, and paying for accountability is a legitimate purchase rather than a waste. The point is that the choice should be made deliberately, with the split of the grade and the published rates visible, rather than by defaulting to a weekly hour because that is what tutoring normally looks like.

Permits, availability and what a tutor may not do

  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge and valid two years
  • MoHRE lists a two-working-day completion time and no fee
  • No fine schedule is published, so no amount can be quoted honestly
  • Abu Dhabi school staff may not tutor their own enrolled students for payment
  • IB Gram holds no accreditation and operates no UAE office or centre

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, and the rules are straightforward enough to check. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through its app, website and e-services system. Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so any amount quoted at you is unverified.

Two further points apply in this emirate specifically. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct reflects the same restriction. And a tutoring business with premises and staff is a different legal animal from an individual tutor: in Dubai that requires a KHDA Educational Services Permit issued to training institutes. IB Gram holds no regulator licence or accreditation of any kind, operates no office or centre in the UAE, and names regulators here only to explain what they do.

Availability in English B is better than in most Diploma subjects, because experienced language teachers are not scarce. Even so, Higher Level oral support built on a literary extract narrows the pool, and if nobody suitable is free for the level and component you need, you are told with a realistic date rather than matched to a generalist. You see what the matched tutor has actually taught before the trial lesson rather than after it.

On coursework, the boundary is the same as in every Diploma subject and is worth saying plainly. A tutor marks the student's own writing, names the register and convention problems, teaches the text types, and rehearses the oral. A tutor does not supply replacement sentences, rewrite a piece into its final form, or hand over model answers to adapt. Operations in this market sell completed assessed work outright, one of them with a published price, and a family should treat that as a risk to their child's Diploma rather than a service.

Where we tutor

English B families across Abu Dhabi, and what each area tends to need

English B profiles cluster geographically in this emirate, because school intake does. The notes below describe the request that most often comes from each area and what it usually costs to answer.

Al Mushrif and Al Karamah

Largely Arabic-speaking households with children in English-medium schools. Requests here are typically about formal writing rather than comprehension, which means a short feedback block on three written pieces rather than a standing weekly slot.

Khalifa City

Villa communities with mixed school intake, including students who transferred into an English-medium school in Year 9 or 10. Reading-paper timing is the usual gap, and it responds to format practice the student can largely do alone once shown.

Al Reem Island

Dense apartment living with short school runs and crowded evenings. Listening practice suits this pattern well because it can happen in twenty-minute blocks on a phone, which is the cheapest marks-per-hour in the course.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Shakhbout City

Mainland communities where families ask directly how few hours will do. For English B the honest answer is often six to eight well-placed hours on writing plus independent listening, rather than two years of weekly sessions.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

Continuum intake where MYP Language Acquisition phases are usually on record. That record frequently resolves the English A or English B placement question without anyone paying for an assessment.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Island neighbourhoods with long-established schools and heavy afternoon traffic. Evening sessions dominate, and online delivery removes a drive that would otherwise add to the real cost of every lesson.

Baniyas and Al Shamkha

Larger mainland communities further from the island schools. Travelling tutors price the commute into the rate here, which is one reason the in-home premium is widest at this distance from the centre.

Yas Island and West Yas

Newer housing with long school commutes that cut into weekday study time. Weekend sessions are more productive, and the oral preparation in particular benefits from a slot where the student is not already tired.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and central Abu Dhabi schools

Group 2 provision here is well established and English B classes are often large and mixed. Students we support attend schools across this cluster, and the work supplements their school teaching rather than replacing it.

  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • The British International School Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Al Muna Academy

Khalifa City, Al Raha and the mainland

Mainland Diploma schools draw a wider mix of prior curricula, so English B classes here span a broader proficiency range. The placement question arises more frequently in this cluster than on the island.

  • Raha International School
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • Al Mamoura Academy
  • Emirates National Schools

Schools are named only to describe the Abu Dhabi context in which these students study. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no affiliation, partnership or endorsement from any school, school group, regulator or examination board named on this page.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Settle the placement before spending anything

Ask the Diploma coordinator whether English A or English B is the right course for your child, and ask what evidence that judgement rests on. Where a MYP Language Acquisition phase record exists, request it. This conversation costs nothing and it determines whether every paid hour afterwards is working with the course or against it.

  2. 02

Take the free trial, and bring a timed piece

One trial lesson per family, no card details taken and no obligation. Bring a piece of timed writing or sit a cold reading section inside the session. The output is a stated weakest element, an hours estimate including zero, and an honest view on whether the placement looks right.

  3. 03

Spend on writing, plan for comprehension

Paid hours go where a student cannot self-correct, which is written register and text-type convention. Listening and reading get a schedule the student runs alone with a monthly review, because half the grade in this course responds to volume rather than to contact hours.

  4. 04

Book the oral block near the examination window

Two or three recorded practice runs, close enough to the internal assessment date that the work stays live. Improvement on this component saturates quickly, so the block is deliberately short and we will say so rather than extending it.

  5. 05

Review the plan against the arithmetic

Every few months, check the hours actually spent against the plan and against the grade split. If half the marks are in a paper nobody has practised, the plan is wrong regardless of how the sessions feel, and that is the point at which it should change.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Published rates, named sources, dated

Every AED figure here belongs to a provider or rate aggregator that published it, with the month it was read. Most competitor pages in this market publish no price at all and two quote in dollars, which leaves an Abu Dhabi parent with no way to judge whether a quote is reasonable.

Hours pointed at the expensive problem

Written register is what a student cannot see alone, so that is where paid feedback goes. Listening and reading carry half the grade and respond to independent volume, so we build a schedule rather than sell contact hours against them.

An honest zero, and an honest short block

Oral improvement in this course saturates after two or three recorded runs. A plan proposing ten sessions on it has misread the component, and we would rather say the block is finished than keep a slot filled. The same applies when a trial lesson shows nothing needs fixing.

No travel in the price

Lessons run one to one over live video, so the in-home premium that Bestimate records at AED 180 to AED 350 and independent tutors quote up to AED 500 simply is not part of the figure. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi; visiting tutors are a service we run only in India.

Coverage limits disclosed with a date

Higher Level oral support on a literary extract needs a narrower kind of teacher. If nobody suitable is free, you get a realistic date rather than a generalist in the slot. No researched competitor in this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

No claimed accreditation, because there is none

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform holding no approval, licence or partnership from the IB, ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education or any examination board, and operating no UAE office. Regulators are named here to explain what they do, never to imply they endorse us.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does an IB English B tutor charge per hour in Abu Dhabi?+

Published market rates relevant to this course run from about AED 33 to AED 45 an hour at the entry level, through AED 150 to AED 300 for a qualified and experienced language teacher, up to AED 500 or more at the premium end. Those are named providers' own figures read in October 2026: Tutopiya from AED 33, EdFlik from AED 45, Unitors IB from AED 200, TutorChase AED 270, Bestimate 200 to 450 and above, BartyED AED 650. For English B the mid band is usually the right purchase, because the course needs an experienced language teacher rather than scarce subject expertise.

Is English B cheaper to support than English A?+

Usually yes, for two reasons. The band is lower, because a strong language teacher rather than a Diploma literature specialist can do most of the work. And half the grade sits in a listening and reading paper that improves with independent timed practice rather than with contact hours, so a well-planned engagement buys fewer paid sessions than an English A engagement typically does. The exception is Higher Level oral preparation on a literary extract, which narrows the pool of suitable tutors and reasonably attracts a higher rate for two or three sessions.

My son speaks English fluently but writes badly. Is English B the right course?+

It often is, and the mismatch you describe is extremely common in Abu Dhabi. Conversational fluency and formal written control are separate skills, and Group 1 English A is marked against literary and analytical criteria that assume the written side is already secure. The decision belongs with the Diploma coordinator, who holds the first term's marked work and any MYP Language Acquisition phase record. A cold timed reading and writing paper adds a hard number if the school's view and your instinct differ, and that can be done inside a free trial lesson.

Which part of English B gives the most marks per dirham spent?+

Marked feedback on written pieces, and it is not close. A student cannot see their own register, so three or four pieces in different text types, each marked for convention and rewritten, change their writing more than a term of unmarked practice. By contrast the listening and reading paper, which carries half the grade, responds mainly to volume of timed practice and format familiarity, so paying by the hour for it is poor value. The oral needs two or three recorded runs and then stops improving, which makes it cheap in total.

Can my daughter improve her listening score without a tutor?+

To a large extent, yes, and saying otherwise would not be honest. Listening improves with the volume of timed practice and with identifying which question types she consistently misses, both of which she can do alone once the format has been explained. What a tutor adds is the initial explanation, accountability, and a monthly review that checks whether the practice is actually happening and what the error pattern is. One taught session plus a schedule plus monthly review is the structure we would normally propose for this component.

How long is the writing task, and does the length matter?+

The writing task specifies a word range that differs between Standard and Higher Level, and it is binding at both ends. A candidate who writes substantially short has not met the task; one who overshoots loses control of structure and often of time for checking. Students should know their range as a number and should have written to it under timed conditions at least three times before the examination. Confirm the current range and paper timing with your child's Diploma coordinator, because published figures are revised between subject guide editions.

Which text types should my child actually learn properly?+

Five, not twelve. The paper offers a choice of tasks, so a candidate who knows five text types confidently will nearly always find one they can write well. A sensible five are the formal proposal, the report, the blog post, the review and the speech, because they span the register range and their conventions are distinct. Learning each with a model structure and a register checklist takes two or three sessions in total and pays back across the writing paper and the oral. Recognising all twelve labels vaguely helps nobody.

What happens in the Higher Level oral, and why does it cost more to prepare?+

At Higher Level the individual oral assessment is built on an extract from one of the two literary works studied in the course, followed by discussion of the prescribed themes. Candidates commonly treat the extract as a comprehension passage and explain what happens in it, rather than using it as a route into the themes. Preparing that well benefits from a tutor with literature teaching experience as well as language teaching, which narrows the available pool and reasonably attracts a higher rate for the two or three sessions involved.

Do we need separate IELTS tutoring as well as English B?+

Often not, and running both separately is one of the more expensive mistakes families make. The skills overlap substantially: timed reading, timed listening, and structured writing to a brief. The Ministry's American-track proficiency routes are a score of 5 in IELTS academic, 61 in TOEFL iBT, or 450 in the SAT reading and writing section, all of which draw on the same abilities English B develops. Whether a particular university accepts English B Higher Level instead of a test varies, so ask that university's admissions office directly rather than assuming.

Should we buy an English B monthly package or pay for single sessions?+

It depends on whether you will use the sessions. Packages circulating in this market at around AED 799 for eight online sessions work out below the per-hour mid band, which is genuine value if all eight are needed. The risk in English B specifically is that the course does not need steady monthly volume: writing feedback comes in short blocks, oral preparation saturates after a few runs, and the receptive paper is independent work. A package can quietly commit you to hours that the subject's shape does not call for.

Do rates in Abu Dhabi rise closer to the examination session?+

Availability tightens more than rates do. Published bands stay broadly stable through the year, but the tutors a family would actually want are booked earlier in the spring term, and the remaining choice narrows. The effect on a household budget is indirect: a late start often means accepting a higher-band tutor because the mid-band ones are full. For English B this matters most for Higher Level oral support, where the suitable pool is smallest, so that block is worth booking before the internal assessment window approaches.

Is there VAT on private tuition fees in the UAE?+

The VAT treatment of education services in the UAE depends on the provider and the service, and we will not state it as fact here without a Federal Tax Authority citation, because getting it wrong in either direction misleads a parent making a financial decision. What a family should do is ask any provider directly whether a quoted AED figure includes VAT and request a tax registration number if one is claimed. Verify the underlying treatment with the Federal Tax Authority or a tax adviser rather than relying on any tutoring website.

Can sessions fit around Ramadan and shortened Abu Dhabi school days?+

Yes, and this course adapts better than most. School days shorten across the UAE during Ramadan and household evenings reorganise around Iftar, so the usable window moves later. Short listening practice and a 60-minute writing feedback session both work well after the meal, while long timed papers do not. The sensible adjustment is to move timed practice before or after those weeks and keep feedback sessions running through them, and to identify any internal oral assessment dates that fall in or just after Ramadan well in advance.

What does the free trial lesson cover, and what is the condition?+

One trial lesson per family, with no card details taken and no obligation to continue. It is a working session rather than a sales call: your child either writes a short timed piece or sits a reading section, and the tutor marks it and says what the weakest element actually is. It ends with an hours estimate, which is sometimes zero, and an honest view on whether the English A or English B placement looks right. The only condition is that it is one lesson per family, not one per subject or tutor.

Check the placement, then buy the narrow thing

English B rewards a family that spends deliberately. Settle the English A or English B question with the school, which costs nothing. Take a free trial lesson, one per family with no card details taken, and find out which of the three assessed elements is actually weak. Then buy the narrow thing: marked writing feedback where a student cannot self-correct, two or three recorded oral runs, and a schedule rather than contact hours for the paper that carries half the grade. Lessons run one to one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, and every AED figure on this page belongs to the provider who published it.
