IB & IGCSE in Yas Island

What a Yas Island family is really asking for

A search for an IB home tutor in Yas Island looks like a logistics question and almost never is. Yas Island households sit between West Yas Academy on the island itself and the Diploma cohorts at Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and Repton School Abu Dhabi a short drive away, with Raha International School pulling students from the Al Raha corridor. A parent on Yas Acres who types that phrase has usually just read a report card with a 4 in Chemistry HL and a comment about data analysis, and wants someone who can say precisely what a 4 in Chemistry HL is made of.

That is a syllabus question. The Diploma is unusual among school qualifications because so much of the grade is specified in public documents: the number of papers, the minutes, the percentage each component carries, the criteria letters an internal assessment is marked against and the mark total under each letter. A tutor who knows those documents can look at a student's last three pieces of work and name the component that is costing the grade. A tutor who does not is guessing, however pleasant the hour is.

The honest position on delivery is this. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service offered only in India. Teaching for Yas Island is delivered one-to-one over live video, with a shared whiteboard, the student's own scanned work on screen and the session timed to Gulf Standard Time. That is not a compromise dressed up as a feature. It is the condition that makes subject specialism possible at all, because the pool of people who have taught Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level to examination standard is small and is not distributed according to who happens to live within twenty minutes of Yas Mall.

What follows is built around the syllabus rather than around the neighbourhood. You will find the components and weightings for the courses Yas Island students most often need, the places marks are lost in each one, the criteria letters an internal assessment is judged under, and what a tutor is and is not permitted to do with a piece of assessed work. Market rates are quoted with their source so you can sanity-check any quote you receive, including ours.

If your child is in DP1 the useful work is different from DP2, and the page says so. DP1 is where a weak internal assessment topic is cheap to fix and expensive to leave; DP2 is where past-paper technique and command-term discipline move a grade. Either way the first session is diagnostic, free, and ends with a written note of what we think is actually wrong. A DP1 note usually lists two or three fixable things; a DP2 note is shorter and blunter, because there is less time to spend on anything that is not costing marks.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Yas Island students arrive at the Diploma from several directions: the Middle Years Programme, a British Year 11, or an American high school transfer. Each route leaves a different gap, and the programme notes below describe what tutoring usually has to repair in each case.

PYPAges 3-12 · Pre-K to Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP is organised around transdisciplinary units and inquiry rather than a fixed subject syllabus, so there is no public paper or weighting to revise towards. Tutoring at this stage is about securing number fluency, reading stamina and written structure, because those three are what the Middle Years Programme will later assume without teaching.

Yas Island primary families tend to come to us for English reading age and times-table automaticity, not for PYP content. The practical worry is that an inquiry report can look polished while arithmetic underneath it is slow. We test calculation speed directly in the first session and tell you plainly whether there is a gap worth paying to close.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

MYP subjects are assessed against four criteria, each marked out of 8, and reported on a 1-7 scale derived from criterion totals rather than from an examination percentage. Students often collect strong criterion A marks and weak criterion C or D marks for years without anyone naming the pattern, which is exactly the pattern that later limits a Diploma grade.

Yas Island students coming out of MYP into DP most often struggle with the move from criterion marking to component weighting. A student used to being marked out of 8 on four separate axes suddenly sits a paper worth 40% of a grade. We spend the first weeks of DP1 teaching what a mark scheme looks like and how a question is read.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and Creativity, Activity, Service. Each subject carries an internally assessed component and externally assessed papers with published weightings, and the Diploma total runs to 45 points including up to 3 from the TOK and Extended Essay matrix.

This is the bulk of the Yas Island work. Higher Level Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics AA and Economics are the courses parents here ask about most, and the request usually arrives in DP1 term two or in the eight weeks before mocks. Abu Dhabi schools sit the May session, which sets the whole working backwards plan.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

The CP pairs at least two Diploma courses with a career-related study, a reflective project, a service-learning requirement and a language development portfolio. It is far less common in the UAE than the full Diploma, and the assessment load sits differently: the career-related element is moderated by the provider rather than examined by the IB.

Few Yas Island students are on the CP, but those who are often need help on exactly the DP courses they have taken alongside it, plus structure for the reflective project. We treat the DP courses with the same component-by-component approach used for a full Diploma candidate.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

These are the Diploma courses Yas Island families ask for by name, with what each one actually assesses and the place marks most often disappear. The level column matters: Higher Level is not Standard Level with extra homework, it is additional syllabus and, in several subjects, an additional paper.

Chemistry

HL and SL

Externally assessed papers plus the scientific investigation. Marks are lost on the data-based questions where units, significant figures and uncertainty propagation are treated as decoration, and on organic mechanisms drawn without curly arrows showing electron movement.

Physics

HL and SL

The HL syllabus adds depth across fields, induction and quantum phenomena. The recurring failure is not conceptual but procedural: candidates do not state the model they are applying, so the examiner cannot award method marks for a line of working that happens to reach the right number.

Biology

HL and SL

Content volume is the obvious problem and command-term discipline is the real one. Outline, explain, distinguish and suggest ask for different things and carry different mark allocations, and a student who writes one long paragraph for all four loses marks they know the content for.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

Proof, calculus and algebraic manipulation carry the HL grade. Students lose marks by abandoning working once they reach an answer, and by treating the graphical display calculator as a substitute for the analytic method the question is testing.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

Modelling, statistics and technology use dominate. The common error is reporting a statistical output without interpreting it in the context of the question, which is where the interpretation marks sit rather than in the calculation itself.

Economics

HL and SL

Diagrams are marked, not illustrative. An axis left unlabelled or a shift drawn without an arrow costs marks on Paper 1 and Paper 2, and the HL Paper 3 quantitative work needs practised arithmetic under time pressure rather than theory revision.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Guided textual analysis and the comparative essay reward argument structure. The weakest scripts summarise the text; the strongest make a claim about how meaning is constructed and prove it with short, precisely chosen quotation.

Business Management

HL and SL

Tool application is where marks live: a student who recalls a framework but cannot apply it to the stimulus material stalls in the middle bands. HL adds depth on operations and organisational change, and the research project needs a focused question early.

Computer Science

HL and SL

Paper work rewards precise pseudocode and correct trace tables, and the solution development component rewards documented testing. Students usually arrive strong on code and weak on the written justification the criteria actually reward.

Psychology

HL and SL

Studies have to be used as evidence for a claim, not recited. Marks are lost when a candidate describes a study accurately and never links it back to the question's command term, and HL adds the extensions and additional approaches to behaviour.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Yas Island families use the service, chosen by what the syllabus needs rather than by budget alone. All three are delivered live over video; none involves a tutor travelling to an address in the UAE.

Weekly subject teaching

One hour or ninety minutes a week on a single Diploma course, following the school's scheme of work a step ahead rather than behind. The tutor marks one piece of the student's work between sessions and the session opens with that marking, so the hour is spent on the identified weakness rather than on a general recap.

  • Same tutor, same slot, through the academic year
  • One marked piece of work returned between sessions
  • Progress tracked against component weightings, not vague confidence
  • Session notes sent to the parent after each lesson

Internal assessment criterion coaching

A short block of sessions built around the criteria letters for one internally assessed piece. The student brings a draft; the tutor reads it against the published criteria, names the band each criterion currently sits in and explains what the next band requires. The student then does the rewriting, because the work must be their own.

  • Topic viability checked before weeks are spent on it
  • Criterion-by-criterion feedback in writing
  • No drafting, rewriting or production of the student's assessed work
  • Academic honesty expectations stated to student and parent

Past-paper intensive before mocks or May

Timed paper work with the clock running, marked against the real mark scheme and reviewed question by question. The point is not more content: it is reading the command term correctly, allocating minutes by marks available and showing the working that earns method marks when the final answer goes wrong.

  • Papers sat under time, not worked through at leisure
  • Marks reconciled to the published mark scheme line by line
  • Error log maintained across the block so patterns surface
  • Two or three sessions a week in the final fortnight if needed

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Yas Island

01

What "IB home tutor in Yas Island" buys, in plain terms

  • Online delivery widens the tutor pool from a twenty-minute radius to the whole qualified field
  • The student's own marked work is the raw material for the session
  • Re-teaching school lessons is the most common way the hour is wasted
  • No tutor travels to a Yas Island address under any plan or package

An IB home tutor in Yas Island, as the phrase is used in Abu Dhabi, means private one-to-one Diploma teaching arranged outside school for a student living on the island. The market splits into two models: a tutor who drives to the villa, and a tutor who teaches live over video. IB Gram sells the second. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE, and nobody will arrive at a Yas Acres address.

That distinction decides what you can buy. A tutor who drives is drawn from the set of people who will accept a round trip across the Sheikh Khalifa bridge in late-afternoon traffic for a single hour. That set is small, and it is not selected for having taught Chemistry Higher Level. A tutor who teaches over video is drawn from everyone qualified to teach the course, which is the whole point. For a Standard Level subject with a broad teacher pool the difference is modest. For Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at Higher Level, or Physics HL, it is the difference between a specialist and whoever was available.

The second thing the phrase buys is a different relationship with the student's own marked work. A private hour is the only place a student's last paper gets read closely by someone who knows the mark scheme. School marking is honest but fast; thirty scripts do not permit a line-by-line reconciliation of what was awarded against what could have been. One-to-one does, and that reconciliation is where most of the available grade movement sits in DP2.

What it does not buy is content delivery that duplicates the school. If a tutor spends the hour re-teaching the lesson your child already sat through, you are paying twice for the same material. The useful hour starts from evidence: a marked paper, a returned internal assessment draft, a topic test. If a prospective tutor does not ask for any of that before the first session, that tells you most of what you need to know.

02

Diploma components and weightings, course by course

The Diploma publishes how each grade is built. That is the single most useful fact available to a parent, and almost no tutoring page in this market uses it. Below is the shape of assessment for the courses Yas Island students most often need help with: what is externally examined, what is internally assessed, and roughly where the weight sits. Exact percentages are set in each subject's current guide and are revised between syllabus cycles, so treat the table as the structure and confirm the current figures with your child's subject teacher or the course guide the school works from.

Reading it changes how an hour gets spent. A student with a weak internal assessment in a subject where the internal component carries about a fifth of the grade has roughly one grade boundary of recoverable ground sitting in a document they control, on their own timetable, with no examination pressure. A student with strong internal marks and weak paper technique has the opposite problem and needs timed practice rather than coursework help. These two students look identical on a report card and need completely different tutoring.

The second use of the table is choosing which subject to fund. Families commonly buy tutoring for the subject with the lowest grade. Sometimes that is right. Often the better purchase is the subject where a single component is dragging an otherwise solid profile, because the gap between the current mark and the next band is narrower and the route to it is specified. We say which we think it is at the end of the free trial, in writing, and sometimes that answer is that the subject you asked about is not the one to buy.

03

The criteria letters your child is actually marked against

Every internally assessed Diploma component is marked against lettered criteria with a published mark allocation under each. A parent who knows the letters can read a returned draft and see where the marks went. A parent who does not is left with a number and a comment. This section is the one almost no competing page in Abu Dhabi carries, and it is the cheapest grade movement available in DP1.

The mechanism is the same across subjects even though the letters differ. The marker reads the work once for each criterion, places it in a band for that criterion alone, and totals. A student can therefore write something articulate and well-presented and still score poorly, because presentation is not a criterion. Equally, a student can score well with plain prose if the analysis criterion is satisfied. Teaching to the criteria is not gaming the system; it is reading the instructions the IB published.

The practical sequence we use is straightforward. The student brings whatever exists, however rough. The tutor reads it against the criteria, writes one sentence per criterion naming the current band and one sentence naming what the next band requires, and sends that to the student. The student rewrites. The tutor reads again. At no point does the tutor write, redraft or complete any part of the work, and both student and parent are told that in the first session. That line is not a disclaimer; it is what distinguishes legitimate support from the completed-coursework sellers who also rank for these searches.

Where Diploma marks actually go missing, by subject group

  • Sciences: unstated models, missing uncertainties, premature rounding
  • Mathematics: working abandoned once an answer appears
  • Essay subjects: one answer shape used for every command term
  • All subjects: time allocated by question length rather than by marks available

Report cards describe symptoms. A 4 in Physics HL is a symptom; the cause is usually one of a small number of specific, diagnosable habits. After enough one-to-one hours the same causes recur, and naming them is faster than another term of general revision.

In the sciences the dominant cause is procedural rather than conceptual. Students who understand the physics lose marks because they do not write down the model they are using, do not quote an uncertainty, or round through a calculation and arrive at a number that cannot be awarded. The fix is mechanical and fast: a fixed layout for a calculation, a habit of stating assumptions, and ten marked data questions. Most of the recoverable marks in Chemistry and Physics sit here, not in the content.

In mathematics the dominant cause is the abandoned method. A question worth six marks is not asking for a number; it is asking for a sequence of justified steps, most of which carry marks whether or not the final line is right. Students trained on single-answer platforms stop writing once they see the answer and hand back two marks out of six. In the essay subjects the dominant cause is the command term: outline, explain, discuss, evaluate and justify each carry a different expectation and a different mark ceiling, and a student who writes the same shape of answer for all of them is capped regardless of knowledge. These are the three diagnoses we expect to make, and the first session says which one applies.

05

Online teaching versus an in-home tutor for a Yas Island household

This is the comparison the search implies, so here it is directly. An in-home tutor in Abu Dhabi is quoted across a wide band because the quote includes travel: published market figures put in-home one-to-one visits at roughly AED 180 to 350 an hour, with independent home tutors quoted up to AED 500, while qualified online subject tutors sit around AED 150 to 300 and budget online providers advertise from as little as AED 33 to 65. Those are market figures from the providers themselves, not IB Gram's prices.

The money is the smaller half of the comparison. The larger half is who is in the pool. A Yas Island family hiring in person is choosing from tutors willing to make the crossing at 17:00; a family hiring online is choosing from everyone who can teach the course. For Mathematics AA at Higher Level, or Chemistry HL, or Economics HL Paper 3 work, that difference decides whether the hour is taught by a specialist or by a competent generalist. There is also a time arithmetic nobody quotes: a tutor spending ninety minutes travelling for a sixty-minute lesson has to price that time somewhere, and it is in your rate.

The honest case against online is narrow but real. A student who will not sit at a desk without an adult physically present, or who needs handwriting and physical equipment supervised, is better served in a room. For Diploma work, where the material is mostly reading, writing, calculation and marked scripts on a screen, the room adds little that a shared whiteboard and a document camera do not. We say so plainly, and if we think your child is the exception we tell you that instead of selling you sessions.

Academic honesty: the line a Diploma tutor cannot cross

  • Teaching, criterion feedback and worked examples on other material: legitimate
  • Writing, rewriting, restructuring or proofreading submitted work: not legitimate
  • Supplying a finished internal assessment or Extended Essay: malpractice
  • Distributing board-owned papers and mark schemes: not something we do

The Diploma is unforgiving about authorship. A student signs a declaration that submitted work is their own, and a breach is handled as malpractice with consequences that can reach the award of the Diploma itself. That is why this section exists on a tutoring page: some of what ranks for Abu Dhabi IB searches is sold by operators who will produce an internal assessment or an Extended Essay for a fee. One such operator advertises completed internal assessments outright. Buying that is not a shortcut; it is a risk taken entirely by the student.

The legitimate boundary is clear enough to state in a sentence. A tutor may teach the subject, explain the criteria, read a draft and say what band each criterion sits in, model a technique on a different example, and ask the questions that make a student find their own weakness. A tutor may not write, rewrite, restructure, proofread to completion or supply content for anything that will be submitted. IB Gram tutors work inside that boundary, and the first internal assessment session includes a short, explicit conversation with student and parent about where it sits.

There is a related point about materials. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to the IB and to the examination boards. We reference them and point you to the official source; we do not host or supply them. If a tutoring service offers you a library of downloaded mark schemes, that is a copyright question at best and, for unreleased material, a malpractice question. Ask where it came from.

07

Moving from MYP or Year 11 into DP1 on Yas Island

  • MYP to DP: learn the shape of an examination answer early in DP1
  • IGCSE to DP: check internal assessment topic viability before any writing
  • American transfer: expect the written paper load to be the shock, not the content
  • Term one is where a transition gap is cheap; DP2 is where it is expensive

Two transitions dominate the Yas Island caseload. The first is MYP to DP, where a student used to four criteria marked out of eight meets components weighted as percentages of a final grade. The second is a British Year 11 into DP1, where a student used to IGCSE's tight, predictable question styles meets papers that ask for synthesis and extended argument. Both transitions are survivable and both reliably cost a grade in term one if nobody names what changed.

For the MYP student the change is in what counts as evidence. MYP criterion C or D rewards a process shown; a Diploma paper rewards an answer constructed to a command term under time. The same student who writes beautifully reflective MYP work can produce a thin Paper 2 because nobody taught them the shape of an examination answer. Four or five sessions of nothing but past-paper structure in DP1 term one is usually enough, and it is far cheaper than repairing it in DP2.

For the Year 11 student the change is in breadth of required reading and in the internal assessment. IGCSE coursework, where it exists, is tightly specified; a Diploma internal assessment asks the student to choose a question and defend the choice. Students fresh from IGCSE routinely pick a topic that cannot reach the top bands, then spend a term on it. Checking the topic before the work starts is twenty minutes that saves a grade. It is also the single most useful thing a Yas Island DP1 parent can buy in term one.

08

Starting with a Yas Island family, and what we tell you if we cannot help

  • Free trial in the slot you intend to keep, no card details required
  • Written diagnosis of the component losing marks after the trial
  • Coverage limits disclosed before you commit, including non-UAE tutors
  • Tutor changed on request at no charge if the match is wrong

The sequence is short. You tell us the course, the level, the school and what the last marked piece of work said. We look at what the student actually produced rather than at the grade. A trial lesson is arranged in the slot you want to keep, free, with no card details taken. The tutor teaches for that hour and writes you a note afterwards naming the component we think is costing marks and what a term of work would target.

Where a specialist is not immediately free we say so rather than filling the slot. The courses where Abu Dhabi coverage is tightest are the ones you would expect: Higher Level Mathematics AA, Higher Level Physics, Computer Science and the less common language A options. For those the realistic answer is sometimes a wait of a few days, and sometimes a tutor based outside the UAE teaching into Gulf Standard Time, which we disclose before you agree rather than after. No competitor page in this market discloses a coverage limit at all, which is why we do.

After that it is ordinary weekly work: same tutor, same slot, one marked piece between sessions, notes to the parent. You can stop whenever you like. Sessions move in mock weeks and shift to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan on request. If after three or four sessions the match is not working, we change the tutor without an argument and without charging for the handover, because the alternative is a family paying for an hour nobody looks forward to.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Yas Island

Yas Island sits inside a cluster of Abu Dhabi communities whose students share schools, exam sessions and traffic. Because teaching is delivered over video the geography does not restrict who can teach your child, but it does shape when a session can start.

Yas Island

Yas Acres and the Yas Island residential districts feed West Yas Academy on the island and send Diploma students across the bridge to Saadiyat and the Al Raha corridor. Sessions here usually begin between 16:30 and 18:00.

Saadiyat Island

Home to Cranleigh Abu Dhabi and a short drive from Yas. Families frequently have one child at a Saadiyat school and another on the island, which is why sibling scheduling comes up so often in this cluster.

Al Reem Island

Repton School Abu Dhabi draws Diploma students from Al Reem and the city. Apartment living here makes a quiet room at 17:00 harder to find than on Yas Acres, so headphones and a fixed desk matter more.

Al Raha Beach

Al Bandar and Al Zeina residents sit between the airport road and the island. Raha International School's IB continuum is the nearest full PYP to DP route, and several Yas families chose it over an island school.

Khalifa City

Villa communities with a long school-bus run to island schools. A student living here and schooled on Yas can be home as late as 16:45, which pushes realistic session starts towards 17:30.

Al Bateen

Al Bateen Academy and the American Community School of Abu Dhabi sit on the older part of the island city. The drive from Yas at 16:00 is the reason very few Yas families use a tutor based here in person.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Mainland community with a mixed school pattern across British, Indian and IB provision. Diploma students here often share a tutor slot with a sibling sitting IGCSE, which the online format makes straightforward.

Al Reef

Close to the airport and a straightforward run to Yas and Al Raha schools. Session timing is rarely the constraint here; subject availability is, which is why specialist coverage rather than proximity is the question that matters.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the evidence, not just the grade

Tell us the course, the level, the school and the last marked piece of work. A photographed script or a returned internal assessment draft tells us more in two minutes than a report card does in a page, because it shows where marks were awarded and where they were not.

  2. 02

    We match a subject specialist

Matching is by course and level, not by general subject. A Chemistry HL request goes to someone who has taught Chemistry HL to examination standard. Where that person is not free this week we say so and give you the realistic wait rather than substituting a generalist.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson in your intended slot

Book the trial at the time you actually want to keep, so you learn whether 17:30 on a Tuesday survives the school bus and homework. No payment and no card details. You watch or you do not; most Yas Island parents listen to the first ten minutes and leave.

  4. 04

    Written diagnosis before you decide

After the trial the tutor sends a short note: which component is costing marks, what the next band needs, and how many weeks of work that implies. If we think the subject you asked about is not the one to fund, the note says that instead.

  5. 05

Weekly teaching with marked work between

Same tutor, same slot. One piece of the student's own work is marked between sessions and the next session opens with that marking. Parent notes after each lesson, slots moved for mocks, and Ramadan timings shifted on request.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched by course and level

Higher Level is a different syllabus, not more of the Standard Level one. Our matching treats it that way, so a request for Mathematics AA HL does not get answered with a general maths tutor who is strong to IGCSE and improvising above it.

The syllabus documents, used openly

Sessions work from the current course guide and the published assessment outline for the subject, and we point you to the official source rather than hosting board-owned material. You can check anything we tell you against the document the school works from.

Criterion coaching, never ghostwriting

Internal assessment support is feedback against lettered criteria on the student's own draft. Nobody writes, rewrites or proofreads to completion. That boundary is stated to the student in the first session, because the student is the one who signs the authenticity declaration.

Delivery stated honestly

Teaching into Yas Island is live one-to-one video. IB Gram does not offer home visits in the UAE; that service exists only in India. You will not find a page on this site implying otherwise, which is more than can be said for several rate-comparison sites in this market.

Market rates quoted with their source

Every AED band on this page is attributed to a published market source and dated, so you can test any quote you receive against it. We do not present market figures as our own price list, and we do not publish a rate we have not sourced.

Coverage gaps disclosed up front

When no specialist is free for a niche Higher Level course we tell you the wait, or tell you the tutor would be teaching from outside the UAE into Gulf Standard Time. You get that before you commit rather than discovering it in week three.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Yas Island: your questions answered

Can an IB home tutor actually visit our villa on Yas Island?+

Not through IB Gram. Home visits are a service offered only in India; teaching for Yas Island is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. Independent tutors in Abu Dhabi do make house calls, and published market figures put those visits at roughly AED 180 to 350 an hour with independents quoted higher. If physical presence is the deciding factor for your child, hire locally with open eyes. If subject specialism matters more, the online pool is much larger, because it is not limited to people willing to cross onto the island at five in the afternoon.

Which Diploma courses do Yas Island parents most often ask us about?+

Chemistry at Higher Level, Physics at Higher Level, Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches at both levels, and Economics including the Higher Level quantitative paper. English A: Language and Literature comes up for the comparative essay rather than for comprehension. The pattern is consistent: parents ask about the subjects where a single examined component carries a lot of weight and where the school cannot give a student much individual attention on marked scripts. Those are also the subjects where one-to-one work on a marked paper moves a grade fastest, which is why they dominate the caseload here.

How do I tell whether my child's problem is content or technique?+

Look at a marked paper rather than at the grade. If marks were lost on questions whose topics the student can explain aloud, the problem is technique: command terms read wrongly, working abandoned, time allocated by question length rather than marks. If the student cannot explain the topic at all, it is content. The two need different hours and different money. Our free trial exists mainly to answer this question, and the written note afterwards says which it is. Buying content revision for a technique problem is the most common way families waste a term.

What exactly is a tutor allowed to do with my child's internal assessment?+

Teach the subject, explain the lettered criteria, say which band a draft currently sits in, explain what the next band requires, and model technique on different material. Nothing more. A tutor may not write, rewrite, restructure or proofread to completion any part of what is submitted, because the student signs a declaration that the work is their own and a breach is handled as malpractice. Some operators ranking for Abu Dhabi IB searches sell completed internal assessments. That is a risk carried entirely by the student, and it is not a service we provide at any price.

Is Higher Level really harder, or just more work than Standard Level?+

It is additional syllabus, not additional homework. Higher Level courses carry extra content, and in several subjects an extra examined paper, and the questions reach further into synthesis. Economics HL adds a quantitative paper; Mathematics AA HL adds proof and deeper calculus; the sciences add topics and more demanding data work. This matters when choosing a tutor, because someone comfortable to Standard Level may be improvising above it. Ask any prospective tutor which Higher Level topics they have taught to examination standard, and listen for specifics rather than reassurance.

My child is in DP1 and nothing is urgent yet. Is tutoring premature?+

DP1 is where the cheap work is. Internal assessment topic choice, the shape of an examination answer and command-term discipline all cost a few sessions in DP1 and cost a grade to repair in DP2. The most valuable twenty minutes a DP1 parent can buy is a viability check on an internal assessment topic before a term is spent on it, because a topic that cannot reach the top bands caps the mark regardless of effort. Waiting until mocks is common and it is the expensive choice. We would rather sell you four sessions now than twenty in February.

Who regulates the schools my child might move between in Abu Dhabi?+

The Department of Education and Knowledge, ADEK, supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, and publishes its own inspection outcomes. Dubai schools answer to KHDA instead, Sharjah to the Sharjah Private Education Authority, and Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah to the federal Ministry of Education. That matters if you move within the country, because inspection frameworks and reporting differ by emirate. ADEK is named by almost none of the tutoring sites competing for these searches, which tells you something about how locally written those pages are.

Are the tutors legally permitted to give private lessons in the UAE?+

Private tutoring in the UAE runs on a permit. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers categories including registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents and university students. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no figure should be quoted to you. Ask any prospective tutor whether they hold the permit, and apply through MoHRE's own channels rather than an intermediary.

Can a teacher from my child's own Yas Island school tutor them privately?+

Not in Abu Dhabi, and you should be cautious of any service that offers it. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff prohibit teachers from providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct that also bars serving students affiliated with the teacher's own school. Treat this as press-reported and check the current ADEK policy if the situation affects you directly. The practical point is simple: a marketing pitch built on your child's own teacher privately is a pitch to breach a rule.

How many sessions a week does a struggling Higher Level student need?+

One session a week per subject is the normal starting point and is enough when the problem is technique, because the work between sessions does most of the lifting. Two a week makes sense in a defined push: the eight weeks before mocks, or a Higher Level subject where content gaps go back a year. Three is usually a sign that something structural is wrong, such as too many Higher Levels or a subject choice that needs revisiting with the school. We would rather tell you that than sell you the third hour.

Does the May session or the November session apply to Yas Island students?+

Abu Dhabi Diploma cohorts sit the May session, which sets the backwards plan for the whole two years. Published IB session dates should be confirmed with your child's IB coordinator or on the IB's own site rather than taken from any tutoring page, including this one; we deliberately do not print a date we have not read at source. The useful planning point is not the date anyway, it is that school internal deadlines for coursework sit months earlier than anything the IB publishes, and those are the deadlines that actually bite.

How does a live video lesson handle maths working and lab diagrams?+

A shared whiteboard both people can write on, plus the student's own scanned or photographed work on screen for annotation. For mathematics the tutor writes the working out line by line as a teacher would at a desk, which is the point: the student watches a method being constructed, not a finished answer. For a scientific investigation the tutor reads the student's own data table and graph and marks the uncertainty treatment on screen. Nothing about reading a marked script, annotating it and discussing it requires sitting in the same room.

What should I send before the first lesson to make it useful?+

The course and level, the school, the most recent marked paper or topic test, and any returned internal assessment draft with the teacher's comments. If there is a predicted grade, send that too. What we do not need is a long account of the problem: the marked script says it faster and more accurately. Twenty minutes of preparation on your side turns a diagnostic trial lesson into a specific plan rather than a pleasant conversation. Families who send the script get a better written note afterwards, every time.

What happens if no specialist is free for my child's Higher Level subject on Yas Island?+

We tell you, with a realistic wait, rather than filling the slot with whoever is available. Coverage is tightest on Mathematics AA at Higher Level, Physics HL, Computer Science and the less common language A options. Sometimes the answer is a few days; sometimes it is a tutor based outside the UAE teaching into Gulf Standard Time, which we disclose before you agree. No competing page in this market publishes a coverage limit, and the reason we do is that discovering it in week three is worse for you than hearing it now.

Can one tutor cover two Higher Level subjects for the same Yas Island student?+

Sometimes, and it is worth asking, but not at the cost of specialism. Mathematics and Physics overlap enough that one person often teaches both well. Chemistry and Biology are taught by the same person less often than parents expect, because the Higher Level content diverges sharply. Where a single tutor can genuinely cover two courses the scheduling is simpler and the student builds one working relationship. Where they cannot, two specialists beat one generalist, and we will say which situation we think you are in.

Start with one marked script and a free hour

If you are looking for an IB home tutor in Yas Island, begin with the evidence rather than the logistics. Send us the course, the level, the school and the last marked piece of work, and book a free trial lesson in the slot you actually want to keep. The tutor teaches that hour and writes you a short note naming the component costing marks and what a term of work would target. Teaching is live one-to-one video on Gulf Standard Time; nobody arrives at a Yas Acres address. If we do not have the right specialist free, we will tell you that too.
