IGCSE Maths Tutor in Al Samha

Hiring an IGCSE maths tutor in Al Samha is a budget decision as much as an academic one, and the biggest costs are rarely the hourly rate. This page prices the whole picture: the published AED bands, what a wrong tier entry costs to work around, what a group class really saves, and what a November resit adds up to. Tuition is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, matched to your child's syllabus code.

IB & IGCSE in Al Samha

The expensive decisions in IGCSE maths are not hourly rates

A family in Al Samha pricing IGCSE mathematics help will find the hourly rate easy to compare and almost everything else invisible. The rates, read in October 2026, are these. Budget online tuition, often delivered by university students: AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik publishing AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya from AED 33 to 52. A qualified subject tutor working online: AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. In-home one-to-one with travel inside the rate: AED 180 to 500, with Bestimate quoting AED 180 to 350 and independent home tutors AED 200 to 500. Specialists: AED 200 to 450 and upwards, with TutorChase publishing AED 270. Premium examiner-led tuition: AED 500 to 650 and above, with BartyED publishing AED 650.

Those numbers are worth having, and three of the six most visible competitors in this market publish none of them. But the decisions that actually move the total spend sit elsewhere. A tier entry that caps the grade below what the sixth form requires creates remedial cost that no hourly rate reflects. A resit adds a term of work in a year when the student has already started something else. A year of weekly sessions bought when six targeted ones would have done is the most common overspend in this subject, and it is invisible because the sessions are perfectly competent.

Geography adds one specific cost here. Al Samha sits in the north of the emirate off the Dubai road, and an in-home tutor coming from the city prices a journey of forty minutes or more each way. That is inside the quoted rate, and it is time nobody is taught in. For the same money an online arrangement buys more teaching and a wider choice of tutor, which in a subject where the syllabus code matters is the more useful trade.

There is also the cheapest route of all, which a page about cost should mention before any rate table. The maths teacher who marks your child's work already knows the gap. School departments run clinics, often unadvertised. The mock paper breakdown is a written diagnosis the family already owns. A classmate on the same code and tier is free. Two cycles of self-marked past papers will tell you whether paid help is needed and for what. The order matters: exhaust the free routes first, because they also tell you what to brief a paid tutor on.

IB Gram teaches one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, matched to the syllabus code and tier the school entered. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India. What follows is the full cost picture, including the parts that reduce what a family spends with us.

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The cost of mathematics help depends on which stage a student is in, because the amount of recoverable ground differs sharply between them.

Cambridge IGCSE and Pearson International GCSE Mathematics

Terminal written papers with tiering: Cambridge Core and Extended on an A* to G scale, Pearson Foundation and Higher on the 9 to 1 scale, where Foundation caps at grade 5 and Higher runs 9 down to 4 with grade 3 available. Cambridge has revised the 0580 assessment model, so paper structure should be confirmed at source for the series entered.

Because the grade is terminal, almost all of the recoverable marks sit in technique rather than in banked work, which is good news for a budget: habits are cheap to fix and content gaps are not. Entries and tier deadlines sit with the school as the examination centre, and Cambridge candidates here sit the June series with November as the resit route.

AS and A-Level mathematics

The usual continuation, dominated by pure mathematics with mechanics or statistics. Entry is normally conditional on a minimum IGCSE grade, which is where a tier ceiling becomes a financial problem as well as an academic one.

For Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track, students must show one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than grade E, or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade, plus five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that five. Mathematics almost always sits inside those five.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

IB Diploma Programme mathematics

Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation at Standard or Higher Level, with a 20% Exploration and a third paper at Higher Level. An IGCSE student arrives with strong algebra and no calculus, and the first-term gap is narrow but real.

A family in this corridor heading for the Diploma should spend Year 11 money on algebraic fluency at speed rather than on broad topic coverage, because that is what DP1 assumes from the first week. It is the cheapest form of insurance available and it is rarely what a generic revision course sells.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each item below is a thing families actually pay for, with a realistic session count attached. The counts are what make a budget possible.

Histograms with unequal class widths

Extended and Higher weighted

Frequency density forgotten, so the whole question falls. Two sessions with a before and after test, and typically two to four marks a paper recovered. One of the clearest returns available in the subject.

Reverse percentages

All tiers

Multiplying by 0.8 where the question requires dividing by 1.2. One session of structured practice fixes it permanently, and it appears in every series, which makes it among the cheapest marks a family can buy.

Bounds and accuracy

Extended and Higher weighted

Rounding a bound and so defeating the question, or taking the lower bound where the upper is needed. One to two sessions, procedural, with a rule the student can apply without judgement.

Tree diagrams without replacement

All tiers

The second denominator left unchanged, taking every later mark with it. Two sessions, and three to four marks commonly at stake in a single question, which is a strong return for a small block.

Transformation descriptions

Extended and Higher weighted

Naming a rotation without centre or direction and forfeiting the attached marks. One session plus a checklist, and the marks come back immediately because the understanding was never missing.

Method-mark discipline

All tiers

Writing the setup before evaluating on a calculator paper, so marks survive a wrong final value. One session plus a month of enforcement, and it protects marks across every paper the student sits.

Non-calculator fluency

Where a non-calculator paper is sat

Fractions, index laws, surds and standard form at speed. Built in fifteen-minute timed blocks inside wider sessions, so it adds no extra cost, and it removes the arithmetic drag that causes students to abandon final questions.

Pacing and paper strategy

All tiers

Leaving a stuck question and returning, and treating the last ten marks as reachable. Two sessions of timed sections, and often the single largest recoverable block for a student who understands the content.

Algebraic manipulation

Extended and Higher weighted

Sign errors in subtracted brackets, factorising and algebraic fractions. Three to five sessions of mechanical practice rather than explanation, because the failure is procedural rather than conceptual.

Genuine content gaps

Any tier

Whole question types the student has never been able to attempt. This is the expensive category: a term of weekly work rather than a block, because the material is new rather than mislearnt. Worth identifying early precisely because it costs more.

Tier-decision diagnostic

Years 10 and 11

Two to three sessions working past papers from both tiers and marking them honestly, producing written evidence a parent can take to the maths department. Cheap, bounded, and capable of preventing a far larger cost later.

Mock paper preparation

Year 11

Four to six sessions on the school's own paper styles before the mock window. Bounded and dated, which makes it easy to budget for, and it feeds the predicted grade a sixth form may act on.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three patterns, all live, one-to-one and online, each described by what it costs in sessions rather than by an open-ended commitment.

Named-error repair blocks

Two or three sessions per recurring failure, with a before and after test on past-paper questions. The block ends when the error stops appearing rather than at the end of a month, which is what keeps the spend proportionate to the problem.

  • One named target per block, agreed before booking
  • Session count stated upfront
  • Tested before and after on real questions
  • Ends on the result, not on a renewal date

Tier-decision diagnostic

Two or three sessions working past papers from both tiers and marking them honestly, producing written evidence to take to the maths department. It is bounded work that exists to prevent a much larger cost later, and it is the single most underbought thing in this subject.

  • Papers from both tiers, marked to the published scheme
  • A written summary for the school
  • No ongoing commitment attached
  • Best done in Year 10, while a change is still possible

Pre-series technique block

Four to six sessions before the June or November series working whole papers under timing and marking them together. Aimed at converting near-misses into marks rather than at covering content, which is the only thing that works on a short runway.

  • Whole papers from the correct board, under timing
  • Marked against that board's published scheme
  • Error log by topic and type
  • A stated end date before the series

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Samha

01

The cheapest route to the grade, in the order it should be tried

  • Mock breakdown first; it is a diagnosis you already own
  • Ask the teacher for two priorities, not a general comment
  • One strictly self-marked paper names the real failures
  • Then buy a short block with a target, not a year with a slot

Answering the search directly: an IGCSE maths tutor in Al Samha, through IB Gram, means a specialist matched to your child's syllabus code and tier, teaching one-to-one over live video at a time that fits the bus, with a free trial lesson used as a diagnosis. We do not offer home visits in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India, where the market rate here is AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel included.

The cheapest effective route is a sequence rather than a purchase. Start with the mock paper breakdown, which is a written diagnosis the family already owns and which names the papers and question types that lost marks. Ask the maths teacher for the two topics to prioritise. Attend the department clinic if there is one, because it happens before the bus leaves and costs no evening. Have the student mark one past paper strictly against the published scheme and classify every lost mark.

After that sequence, most families know exactly what they need, and in this subject it is usually a short list of procedural failures rather than a general absence of understanding. A student losing three or four marks a paper to histograms, reverse percentages and unwritten method lines needs perhaps six sessions in total. At the published qualified band of AED 150 to 300 an hour, that is a defined and modest spend with a measurable outcome.

The alternative, which is what most families actually buy, is a year of weekly sessions starting in September and ending with the series. Those sessions are usually competent and the student usually improves, but nobody can say which part of the improvement the money bought, and the total is several times the targeted figure. Naming that difference is the main purpose of this page.

02

What a wrong tier entry costs, and why it is the largest avoidable expense

Tier entry is made by the school as the examination centre and it sets a ceiling the student cannot pass however well the papers go. Cambridge Core caps the grades available below the top of the A* to G scale; Pearson Foundation tops out at grade 5, with Higher running 9 down to 4 and grade 3 available as a safety net. Those ceilings are not academic abstractions; they are the single largest avoidable cost in this subject.

Consider the sequence that follows a tier set too low. The student performs well, achieves the ceiling grade, and finds it below the entry requirement for the post-16 course they want. The remedies are all expensive: a November resit on the higher tier with a term of preparation while starting a new course, a change of post-16 plan, or a year repeated. Any of those costs more than the entire tutoring budget that preceded it.

A tier set too high has a different cost. A student who accesses few marks on the harder paper gains nothing from it and may finish with a weaker result than a confident performance at the lower tier would have produced. The money spent trying to stretch them to a paper they could not reach is money spent on the wrong target, and nobody involved notices until the results arrive.

The preventive spend is small. Two or three sessions working past papers from both tiers, marked honestly against the published schemes, produce written evidence a parent can take to the maths department while a change is still administratively possible. In Year 10 that evidence is actionable; in the spring of Year 11 it usually is not. This is the clearest case in the subject where a small early purchase prevents a large later one.

Group class, one-to-one and online: price against attention

A group class is genuinely cheaper per hour and genuinely less attention per student, so the comparison has to be made in both units at once. Tuition centres advertise group rates well below one-to-one bands, and for broad content coverage in a subject a student is simply behind in, a small group can work perfectly well.

Where a group stops working is the diagnostic part, which in IGCSE mathematics is most of the value. A tutor cannot mark one student's paper against the scheme and classify their individual error pattern while running a class of eight. The group gets the content; the individual gets whatever is left. For a student whose problem is a specific set of recurring failures, a group class is cheap and largely irrelevant.

There is also a regulatory dimension worth knowing before paying a centre. An operation with premises and staff in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, obtained through initial approval first, with a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps and annual renewal requested at least thirty days before expiry. In Abu Dhabi, ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools. Ask a centre what it holds, and ask the group size before agreeing to anything.

The in-home column is the most expensive per unit of attention from this corridor, because the rate includes a journey of forty minutes or more each way and the start time is at the mercy of the road. Online one-to-one sits in the middle on price and at the top on usable attention, which is the argument for it stated without embellishment.

What a November resit actually costs, counted properly

A resit looks like an entry fee and a few weeks of revision. Counted properly it is more, and a family deciding in late August should see the whole figure rather than the visible part. Cambridge offers a November series as the resit route for a UAE candidate, and Pearson runs November as well as May and June; the November 2026 Pearson final timetable ran to 19 November 2026, with November 2025 results reaching students on 22 January 2026.

The costs break into four. There is the entry itself, arranged through the school as the examination centre, so ask the examinations officer what applies in your case. There is the preparation, realistically a term of targeted work, which at the qualified band is a defined but non-trivial figure. There is the time cost, which is the real one: the resit term coincides with the start of a post-16 course, and in this corridor with the long bus run restored, so the hours have to come from somewhere already full.

The fourth is the opportunity cost of a resit that repeats the first attempt. If the preparation is the same as last time, the result usually is too. That is why the decision should be made from the component breakdown: which paper, which question types, and whether two or three specific fixes would plausibly cross the boundary. A breakdown showing marks lost to pacing and method lines points to a resit worth doing; one showing whole question types untouched points to a longer problem.

Weigh it against the alternatives honestly. Sometimes the right answer is a resit. Sometimes it is accepting the grade and choosing a post-16 route that takes it. Occasionally it is a different subject combination entirely. A provider that treats every resit as obviously worth selling preparation for has not done that arithmetic with the family.

Where IGCSE maths money disappears without producing marks

Six patterns account for most of the wasted spend in this subject, and they are different from the Diploma versions because the assessment is terminal rather than spread across two years.

The first is buying a year when six sessions would do. A student with three recurring procedural errors needs those errors fixed, not a weekly slot from September to June. The second is buying before the evidence exists: hiring in September on the basis of a feeling, rather than after the mock breakdown has named the papers and question types. The third is paying for content when the problem is pacing. A student who understands the material and abandons the last ten marks needs timed practice, not more teaching.

The fourth is two tutors in the same subject, which happens more often than families admit and produces contradictory methods that confuse a student under time pressure. The fifth is revision materials sold as a product. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are published by Cambridge and Pearson, and reproducing or redistributing them is a copyright matter, so any materials line on an invoice deserves a question. The sixth is an examination-skills course with no individual marking in it: generic technique advice is free on every board's own site, and the value is in somebody marking this student's paper.

All six are prevented the same way. Get the breakdown, name the targets, agree a session count, and set an exit criterion. That costs one free lesson and a short conversation, and it is the difference between a measurable purchase and a monthly habit.

The free diagnosis most families already own

  • Ask for the component breakdown, not the grade
  • Ask the teacher for two priorities, specifically
  • Use the department clinic; it costs no evening in this corridor
  • Self-mark one paper strictly before buying anything

The mock examination breakdown is the most valuable document in a Year 11 family's possession and it is routinely filed away unread. It names the papers sat, the marks lost in each, and in many schools the question-level detail behind them. That is a diagnosis produced by the people who teach your child, at no additional cost, and it is better evidence than a first paid session can generate.

Ask the examinations officer or the head of mathematics for the component breakdown rather than the grade. The grade tells you where the student stands; the breakdown tells you why, which is the part that determines what to buy. Then ask the teacher one specific question: which two question types would you prioritise. A specific question gets a specific answer, where a general request for feedback gets reassurance.

Add to that the department's own support. Clinics, surgeries and lunchtime help exist in most schools and are frequently unadvertised, and in this corridor they have the additional advantage of happening before the bus leaves, which means they cost no evening time at all. For a family where travel already consumes the week, that makes school-based help the highest-value hour available anywhere.

Then there is the free work the student can do alone: one past paper, attempted under timing, marked strictly against the published scheme, with every lost mark classified by topic and type. Two cycles of that and the family knows what paid help should target and roughly how much of it is needed. Recommending this sequence reduces what families spend with us, and it is the right order because a purchase made after it is a purchase that works.

07

Tutoring cost beside the other costs of the year

Families judge tutoring against the school fee rather than against other tutors, and that comparison is worth assembling properly. Write down the annual school fee, the annualised tutoring commitment at the tier under consideration, and what each is expected to deliver. Most families have never seen the second figure annualised, which is why a modest-looking hourly rate can become a surprising yearly total.

For context on the wider market: Dubai's private school sector in 2024-25 enrolled 387,441 students across 227 private schools offering 17 different curricula, with UK curriculum students accounting for 37% of enrolment and the International Baccalaureate 7%. KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that there would be no increase in private school fees in Dubai for the 2026-27 academic year, under an incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. Abu Dhabi fees are regulated separately by ADEK.

Those figures matter for a cost page in one specific way: they show that the British curriculum is the largest single cohort in this market, which means IGCSE tutoring is the most competitive and most heavily marketed segment of it. A parent is therefore being sold to more aggressively here than anywhere else in the education market, and the defence is the same as always: evidence first, targets second, session counts third.

One final caution. Tutoring is not required for school progression, for Ministry of Education equivalency or for university admission, and any provider implying otherwise is manufacturing urgency about a regulatory process. Equivalency is administered by the Ministry and the emirate attestation authority, should be verified on their own pages, and is not something a tutoring company performs, guarantees or speeds up.

What money cannot buy here

  • No grade guarantees, from anybody, at any rate
  • No statistic without a sample size, a date and a method
  • No individual is a regulator-approved tutor
  • The MoHRE permit is free; ask to see it

No tutor can guarantee a grade. The result depends on a student's own work on a specific morning, and any guarantee offered should end the conversation rather than reassure. The same applies to a published success rate, satisfaction percentage or average score with no sample size, date or method behind it: that is a marketing device, and pages in this market show review totals that contradict each other within a single screen.

No provider should supply assessed work. IGCSE mathematics in the mainstream syllabuses has no coursework component, which removes the temptation, but the principle holds across every subject a family might buy help in: a tutor teaches, explains and gives feedback on work the student produced. One operator in this market sells completed Internal Assessments to Diploma students, which is malpractice under IB rules and puts the student's own declaration in question.

No individual tutor is approved, accredited or licensed by ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson, because those bodies regulate schools rather than approving tutors. IB Gram holds no approval, accreditation, licence or partnership from any of them and has no UAE office. A tutoring business with premises in Dubai needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute, which is a specific permit with a number that can be asked for.

And no amount of money buys compliance with the permit rules on a family's behalf. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years to a defined set of applicants. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, no fine schedule is published, and because the permit is free there is no cost reason for a working tutor to lack one.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Samha

These notes are about what distance does to price, because that is the only geographic effect on an IGCSE maths budget in this corridor.

Al Samha

Northern mainland community off the Dubai road. In-home quotes here carry the largest travel component in the emirate, and some tutors decline the distance altogether rather than price it.

Al Shahama

Immediately south with the same travel premium and the same bus-shaped evening. Online rates are identical here, which makes it a useful control when comparing two quotes.

Al Rahba

Same stretch and the same arithmetic. A family here comparing an in-home quote with a city friend's will find the gap is mileage rather than anything about the teaching.

Al Bahia

Nearer the coast and the Yas approaches, trimming the journey for tutors coming from that direction and occasionally showing as a slightly lower quote.

Khalifa City

Where several students from this corridor attend school, and where a tutor living locally faces a shorter run than one coming from the island. Worth asking about if an in-home arrangement matters to you.

Al Raha

Established provision and a common destination, with a slow late-afternoon return along the stretch. That slowness is priced into any in-home quote from that direction.

Yas Island

Frequent school destination where approach traffic is unpredictable, which means an in-home tutor is pricing a journey they cannot reliably estimate.

Abu Dhabi island

Where most tutors in the emirate live and the furthest point from this corridor, so an island-based in-home quote carries the largest premium in the market.

School ecosystem

Schools serving students from this corridor

Both Cambridge and Pearson appear across these schools, sometimes in different subjects within one school, so the syllabus code matters before any money is spent. Students we support attend schools in these clusters; ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate and publishes its own inspection ratings.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Send the breakdown, not the grade

The component breakdown from the mock or the last series, plus the syllabus code and tier. That document names the papers and question types that lost marks, which is what turns a vague worry into a session count a family can budget for.

  2. 02

We tell you what the free options cover first

If the department clinic, the teacher's two priorities and a self-marked paper would close the gap, that is the answer and we will say so. It reduces what you spend with us and it is the right order to try things in.

  3. 03

Free trial lesson, no card required

One full lesson with the matched tutor, no hours bought in advance. It produces a named list of recurring errors, a view on the tier, and an honest estimate of sessions needed, which is sometimes two or three.

  4. 04

A block with a target and an exit criterion

Each block names what it is aimed at, how many sessions it should take and how we will know it worked. Blocks end on the result rather than on a renewal date, which is the main protection against a year being bought by accident.

  5. 05

Raise the tier question while it can still change

If the evidence suggests the tier is wrong, you get a written summary to take to the maths department. In Year 10 that is actionable; by the spring of Year 11 the entry deadline has usually passed and the ceiling is fixed.

A ceiling set too low creates a resit, a changed post-16 plan or a repeated year, each of which costs more than the whole tutoring budget before it. Two or three diagnostic sessions in Year 10 is the cheapest insurance in the subject.

Session counts, not open-ended slots

Histograms: two sessions. Reverse percentages: one. Method marks: one plus enforcement. Naming the counts lets a family budget and makes it obvious when a year has been bought by default.

Free options recommended first

The mock breakdown, the teacher's two priorities, the department clinic and a self-marked paper. All free, all effective, and in this corridor the clinic costs no evening travel either.

No travel inside the price

An in-home rate out to this corridor buys forty minutes or more of driving each way. Online delivery removes it, which raises the teaching per dirham and widens the pool to tutors who have taught the right syllabus code.

Resits counted properly

Entry, a term of preparation, the time cost against a new post-16 course and a restored commute, and the risk of repeating the same preparation. A provider that sells resit preparation without that arithmetic has skipped the useful part.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Samha: your questions answered

What is the going rate for an IGCSE maths tutor in northern Abu Dhabi?+

Read in October 2026, a qualified subject tutor working online is published at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors publishing IGCSE from AED 150. Budget online options run AED 45 to 150, with EdFlik publishing AED 45 to 65. Specialists sit at AED 200 to 450 and upwards, TutorChase publishing AED 270. In-home visits run AED 180 to 500 with travel included, and from this corridor that travel component is large. These are market figures from named sources rather than IB Gram prices.

How many sessions does it take to fix one recurring maths error?+

Two or three for most procedural failures, with a before and after test on past-paper questions to confirm it has gone. Histograms with unequal class widths, reverse percentages, bounds, tree diagrams without replacement and incomplete transformation descriptions all fall into that category. A student losing three or four marks a paper to two or three such errors therefore needs about six sessions in total, which is a defined and modest spend rather than a monthly commitment.

What does it cost if the school enters my child on the wrong tier?+

More than the entire tutoring budget that preceded it. If the tier caps the grade below the sixth-form requirement, the remedies are a November resit with a term of preparation while starting a new course, a changed post-16 plan, or a repeated year. If the tier is set too high the student accesses few marks and gains nothing. Two or three diagnostic sessions in Year 10, producing written past-paper evidence for the department, is the cheap preventive purchase.

Is a group class at a centre better value than one-to-one?+

Cheaper per hour and less useful for the part that matters most. A group can cover content perfectly well for a student who is simply behind. What it cannot do is mark your child's paper against the scheme and classify their individual error pattern, which in IGCSE mathematics is where most of the value sits. Ask the group size before agreeing, and ask the centre what permit it holds; in Dubai an operation with premises needs a KHDA Educational Services Permit for a training institute.

When is the right time to start paying for help in Year 11?+

After the mock breakdown exists, in most cases. Hiring in September on the basis of a feeling means several months aimed at whatever seems hardest rather than at what is actually losing marks. The breakdown names the papers and question types, and a self-marked paper confirms the pattern. The exception is a known content gap carried from Year 10, which is slow to close and therefore worth starting early rather than discovering in the spring.

Why does an in-home tutor cost more out here than in the city?+

Because travel is inside the rate and the journey from the city to this corridor is forty minutes or more each way, often into late-afternoon traffic. Published in-home bands are AED 180 to 500 an hour including travel against AED 150 to 300 for a qualified online tutor. Some tutors decline the distance rather than price it, which leaves a northern family with a shorter list of willing tutors than a search suggests, and a higher chance that the available ones have not taught the right code.

Is a prepaid block of maths sessions worth it?+

Only if nothing expires and the sessions are genuinely used. Advertised monthly packages in this market include AED 799 for eight online sessions, which is good value if eight sessions get used and poor value if three do. Ask three questions before paying: does anything expire, what happens if we stop after one session, and who absorbs a late cancellation. A provider with clean answers to all three is less common than it should be.

What does a November resit really add up to?+

Four things. The entry, arranged through the school as examination centre, so ask the examinations officer what applies. A term of targeted preparation at the chosen band. The time cost, which in this corridor means finding hours in a term that already contains a new post-16 course and a restored bus run. And the risk that preparation identical to the first attempt reproduces the result. Decide from the component breakdown rather than from how the results felt.

Our child understands the maths but runs out of time. What should we buy?+

Timed practice, not more teaching, and it is one of the cheaper purchases available. Two sessions working sections against the clock, learning to leave a stuck question and return to it, and treating the final ten marks as reachable rather than lost. Paying for additional content delivery when the problem is pacing is one of the most common overspends in this subject, because the student appears to need teaching and actually needs a strategy.

Should we add a second tutor if progress feels slow?+

No. Two tutors in one subject produces contradictory methods that confuse a student under time pressure, and it doubles the cost while reducing clarity. If progress is genuinely slow after six to eight weeks, the right response is to re-examine the diagnosis and, if necessary, change the tutor rather than add one. A provider willing to be replaced is more useful than one willing to be supplemented.

Are revision guides and past paper packs worth paying for?+

Not from a tutor. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables are published by Cambridge and Pearson, and reproducing or redistributing them is a copyright matter; the school can also provide them. If materials appear as a line item on an invoice, ask exactly what is being sold. What is worth paying for is somebody marking your child's paper against the scheme and classifying the losses, which is a service rather than a document.

After six weeks of IGCSE maths sessions, what evidence should show the spend is working?+

A fresh past paper, marked strictly against the published scheme, with the lost marks classified and compared against the original log. If the logged failures have gone, the money worked and the recommendation should be fewer sessions. If the distribution looks the same, the diagnosis was wrong and the plan should be redone rather than continued. Progress measured by how sessions feel is not evidence, and it is how a term passes without anything changing.

Can a technique or exam-skills course replace one-to-one help?+

Rarely, because generic technique advice is published free by the boards themselves and the value lies in somebody applying it to this student's paper. Before paying for such a course, ask one question: who marks my child's work, and how often. If the answer is nobody, or occasionally, the course is selling content that is already available at no cost. If it includes individual marking against the scheme, it may be worth the fee.

Under what circumstances would you advise cancelling the IGCSE maths sessions?+

When a fresh marked paper shows the logged failures have gone, which is the stated exit criterion for every block. Also when the diagnosis points elsewhere: a tier that needs changing rather than teaching, a pacing problem solvable in two sessions, a student too tired after a long bus run to use another commitment, or a gap the school's own clinic can close for nothing. A provider that never reaches that point is selling attendance rather than teaching.

Buy the block, not the year

The cheapest effective route through IGCSE mathematics in this corridor runs in order: the mock breakdown you already own, the teacher's two priorities, the department clinic, one strictly self-marked paper, and only then a short block with a named target and a session count. Send us the syllabus code, the tier and the breakdown and we will tell you which of those steps still needs paying for. The first lesson is free. Every AED figure on this page names the source that published it. Tuition runs one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time; home visits are a service we offer only in India.
