IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The price of a Music hour, and why almost nobody publishes it

Abu Dhabi parents who search for an IB DP music home tutor are usually doing arithmetic rather than browsing. A Diploma year carries six subjects, two of which commonly need paid help, and Music sits in an awkward position inside that budget. The instrument is already being paid for through a separate teacher, often weekly, and the Diploma marks have very little to do with how well the instrument is played. So the real question is not whether Music support exists in the emirate. It is what an hour costs, what the hour is spent on, and how many hours a single component needs before the school's internal deadline lands.

Published rates in this market come as bands, not as one number. Bestimate's tutoring cost table for 2026 puts one-to-one visits at roughly AED 180-350 and specialist IB, IGCSE and A-Level work at AED 200-450 and above. Unitors quotes IGCSE from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200. EdFlik advertises online sessions from AED 45-65 and Tutopiya from around AED 33-52, both at the university-student end. TutorChase publishes AED 270 for IB tutoring and BartyED AED 650 at the premium end. Those are other providers' published figures, quoted as they state them in October 2026, and none of them is an IB Gram price list.

Three things move a Music quote away from the middle of those bands, and all three are specific to this subject. The first is component literacy: a tutor who can teach harmony is not automatically a tutor who knows what the experimentation report asks for or where its limits bite. The second is format, because a visiting tutor prices a drive into the fee whether the drive is thirty minutes or sixty. The third is timing, since a block bought six weeks before an internal deadline buys triage, while the same spend across DP1 buys a submission that was planned rather than rescued.

What an hour should contain is easier to specify than what it should cost. A useful Diploma Music session opens a score or a recording on a shared screen, reads it against the criteria the component is actually marked on, and leaves the student with one concrete change and a word or time budget for the next draft. It does not re-teach the instrument, and it does not supply material the student has not produced. Everything submitted stays the student's own work, which is both an IB requirement and the line that separates teaching from the essay mills ranking in this search.

Abu Dhabi matters to the numbers because of geography and regulation. ADEK licenses and inspects private schools across the emirate and publishes its own inspection ratings, and enrolment is spread between the island, the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor, and the newer mainland communities. A specialist who lives on Saadiyat is not a short drive from Al Shamkha at six in the evening. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. Lessons here are one-to-one online, which is why the travel column in the table below reads as zero.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Music runs as a named Diploma course at Standard and Higher Level, and it has feeder routes below it that change how much support a DP1 student needs. Where a student came from predicts the first term's workload more reliably than their instrumental grade does.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme Arts

MYP Arts is assessed on four criteria covering knowing and understanding, developing skills, thinking creatively and responding. Students keep a process journal and present work for assessment rather than sitting a paper. The habit the journal builds, documenting a decision while it is being made, is the single most transferable thing an MYP arts student brings into Diploma Music, and the students who lose it over the summer are the ones who struggle in DP1.

Several Abu Dhabi IB schools run the full continuum, so an MYP arts student often moves into Diploma Music in the same building with the same department. That continuity helps, but it also means nobody formally resets expectations. A short block in the first term of DP1 is usually spent translating MYP criteria habits into the Diploma's components and limits.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE Music

IGCSE Music assesses listening, performing and composing, with a recorded performance and submitted compositions alongside a written listening paper. Students arrive in the Diploma able to score a short piece and talk about set works. What they rarely arrive with is the research habit the Diploma expects, because IGCSE rewards accurate description of given material while the Diploma rewards a student who chooses material and justifies the choice.

Abu Dhabi has a larger British-curriculum cohort than IB cohort, so a sizeable share of Diploma Music students in the emirate come through IGCSE rather than MYP. Those students usually need the first paid block spent on the written exploration, where the gap between describing a set work and researching an unfamiliar one is widest.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Music

Diploma Music is taken at Standard or Higher Level and assessed through a written exploration of music in context, an experimentation report with linked recordings, a presenting music submission, and at Higher Level an additional project in which the student works as a contemporary music maker. The course is built around four areas of inquiry spanning personal, local and global contexts, and the marks follow research, documentation and justification rather than performance polish.

Higher Level Music is not offered in every Abu Dhabi school, and a cohort of three or four is normal where it is. That has a direct price effect: a student may be the only one in the building doing the Higher Level project, so the planning conversation that a bigger cohort has for free is the conversation families here end up buying.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Music rarely arrives alone in a tutoring request. The subjects below are the ones Abu Dhabi families most often add to a Diploma Music block, with what each actually assesses and where the marks tend to go missing.

Music

SL and HL

Assessed on the written exploration, the experimentation report and its recordings, the presenting music submission, and at Higher Level the contemporary music maker project. Marks are lost to unjustified material choices, documentation written after the event, and submissions that run over a stated limit. Instrumental standard is close to irrelevant to the grade.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

TOK is assessed through an exhibition of three objects with commentaries and a prescribed-title essay. Music students often choose arts-and-knowledge prompts and then write about taste rather than about how musical knowledge is produced and justified. The fix is usually structural: one claim, one counterclaim, one real example per paragraph.

Visual Arts

SL and HL

Comparative study, process portfolio and exhibition, all submitted rather than examined. Students who take Music and Visual Arts together carry two documentation-heavy courses with internal deadlines that usually land in the same weeks, so the scheduling conversation matters more than the subject teaching.

Theatre

SL and HL

Assessed through a director's notebook, a research presentation, a collaborative project and, at Higher Level, a solo theatre piece. The overlap with Music is the written frame around a practical act: both courses reward a student who can explain an artistic decision in writing against a theorist or a tradition.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

Paper 1 is a guided analysis of unseen non-literary texts, Paper 2 a comparative essay, plus an individual oral. Music students frequently need English support for the same reason they need it in TOK: the analytical sentence that connects evidence to a claim is the sentence that earns marks in both.

Arabic

A, B and ab initio

Arabic is a mandatory subject in UAE private schools alongside the licensed international curriculum, and the course a student is placed into depends on their background rather than their choice. For a Diploma Music student, Arabic is usually the subject competing for the same evening slots as a submission deadline.

History

SL and HL

Papers on prescribed subjects and world history topics plus a historical investigation. The investigation's source-evaluation section is the closest thing in the Diploma to the research justification Music's written exploration asks for, and students who do one well usually do the other better.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Two papers with technology permitted throughout, plus an exploration. Music students on the AI route often need help with the statistics content rather than calculus, and the exploration is where a tutor's work is strictly feedback on the student's own draft.

Extended Essay in Music

Core · 4,000 words

A research essay on a music question, supervised in school and assessed externally. The common failure is a question so broad that no amount of listening answers it. Supervision support here is process coaching and feedback on drafts the student has produced, never supplied text.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three shapes of booking cover almost every Diploma Music request from this emirate. Each is priced by the hour at the market specialist band rather than as a package, so the cost follows the work rather than a subscription.

Component block before an internal deadline

A bounded set of sessions aimed at one component: the written exploration, the experimentation report, or the presenting music submission. The block starts from a draft and a word or time budget, and ends when the school's internal deadline is met. This is the cheapest useful purchase in Diploma Music and the one most families start with, because it has a defined end.

  • Opens with the current draft and the component's own limits
  • Each session leaves one concrete change, not a general critique
  • Recordings and scores read live on a shared screen
  • Ends at the internal deadline, not on a rolling renewal

Weekly one-to-one through DP1

A single slot a week across the first Diploma year, spent building the research and documentation habits the components reward. This costs more across the year than a block does, and it is the version that prevents the rescue job. Students who keep a running record of decisions as they make them rarely need triage in DP2.

  • One fixed slot a week on Gulf Standard Time
  • Areas of inquiry built out gradually rather than in one term
  • Documentation reviewed while the work is still in progress
  • Pausing around school exam weeks is normal and expected

Higher Level project supervision

Sessions for the student working as a contemporary music maker, where the usual problem is scope rather than skill. A project that depends on a venue, an ensemble or a collaborator who may not materialise is a project that stalls. Supervision here means pressure-testing the plan early, then checking that the required evidence is actually being captured as the work happens.

  • Scope tested against what the student can realistically document
  • Evidence requirements checked before the work starts, not after
  • Fortnightly review once the project is under way
  • Every artefact submitted remains the student's own

What an IB DP Music home tutor costs in Abu Dhabi, format by format

  • Specialist IB work is the band that matters for a named Diploma component
  • The cheapest hour is rarely component-literate on Diploma Music
  • A visiting fee has a drive inside it whether or not the invoice says so
  • IB Gram delivers one-to-one online, so the travel column reads as zero

An IB DP music home tutor in Abu Dhabi is quoted somewhere between AED 150 and AED 500 an hour depending on format and specialism, and the spread inside that range is wider than most parents expect. The table below sets out the bands as the providers themselves publish them in October 2026, with the source named on every row. Read it as a map of the market rather than as our price list, because IB Gram prices by the hour at the specialist end and starts with a free trial lesson rather than a package.

The important column is not the rate. It is what the hour contains. A session at the lower end usually delivers general academic help, which is useful for a student who has fallen behind on content and close to useless for a student whose experimentation report is three weeks from an internal deadline and has no documented process behind it. A session at the specialist end should be able to name the component, name its limits, and say what the next draft has to change. That difference is worth more than the AED 100 between the bands.

The travel column exists because it is the part families consistently forget to price. A visiting tutor who quotes AED 250 for sixty minutes and drives forty minutes each way from the island to Khalifa City is being paid AED 250 for a commitment of well over two hours. Either the rate absorbs that and the tutor is underpaid, in which case the arrangement does not last, or the rate reflects it and the parent is paying a travel premium on every single session for the life of the booking.

Nine things that move a Music quote, in order of how much they move it

Two families in the same Abu Dhabi community can be quoted AED 180 and AED 420 for what looks like the same hour. The difference is almost never negotiation. It is a set of variables that each push the number in a predictable direction, and knowing which ones apply to your child lets you buy the expensive version only where it earns its money.

The biggest single mover is whether the tutor works at component level. A Diploma Music component is a specific thing with specific limits and a specific mark scheme, and a tutor who has not read the current subject guide is selling music lessons under a Diploma label. The second biggest is proximity to a deadline, because scarcity is real: the fortnight before an internal submission date is when every student in the cohort wants the same slots. The third is format, and it is the one you control most easily.

Three variables push the other way, and parents underuse all of them. Booking a bounded block rather than an open-ended arrangement reduces total spend without reducing the work. Booking in DP1 rather than DP2 buys planning instead of rescue, at the same hourly rate. And accepting a slot that suits the tutor's timezone rather than demanding the 17:00 peak often widens the pool enough to find a genuine specialist instead of the nearest available generalist. Together those three levers usually move a two-year Music budget by more than any discount a provider will offer on an hourly rate, and none of them requires a negotiation.

03

The components you are paying someone to understand

Diploma Music is assessed through submitted work, not through a single terminal paper, and that is the whole reason tutoring economics work differently here than in Physics. Each component has its own form, its own limits and its own failure mode, and the hours a family buys should be attached to a named component rather than to a vague improvement in Music.

The written exploration asks the student to investigate music in context across the four areas of inquiry, drawing on material from personal, local and global settings. The experimentation report documents what happened when the student tried to work in an unfamiliar style, with linked recordings as evidence. The presenting music submission is a selection of the student's own work with programme notes. At Higher Level, the contemporary music maker project adds a piece of real-world practice that has to be planned, executed and evidenced.

The limits in the table below are the part most worth paying for, because they are where otherwise good work is thrown away. Every figure in it should be confirmed against the current subject guide and your child's own teacher before a submission plan is built on it: the IB revises components, and no date or limit in this project has been confirmed against ibo.org, which blocks automated checking. Treat the table as a structure for the conversation, not as the authority. The hours column is the part worth arguing with your own tutor about, because a student who already documents well needs far less time on the experimentation report than one starting from nothing.

Instrument lessons, Diploma Music and the two separate bills

The most expensive misunderstanding in Diploma Music is the belief that the instrumental teacher and the Diploma tutor are the same purchase. They are not, they assess nothing in common, and families who treat them as interchangeable either pay twice for one kind of help or pay once for the wrong kind.

An instrumental teacher builds technique, repertoire and performance confidence, usually weekly, usually in person, and usually at a rate set by their own practice rather than by the tutoring market. That work matters: a student who cannot play cannot produce credible material for the presenting music component. But no part of the Diploma grade is awarded for grade-exam standard, and a student with a diploma-level instrument can still submit a weak exploration because the exploration is a research task.

The school sits as a third provider in this picture and the free one. A staffed music department supplies the subject teaching, the internal deadlines, the recording space and the moderation. Where a department is thin, or where a student is the only Higher Level candidate in the year, the gap that families end up paying to fill is specific and small: component interpretation, documentation discipline, and someone to pressure-test a project plan before it is too late to change it. The table separates the providers so the overlap is visible, and so a family can see which of the three jobs they are already paying for without having noticed it.

Two Diploma years of Music, costed backwards from a May session

UAE schools sit the May session, and the internal deadlines that govern Music submissions land well before it. Counting backwards is the only sensible way to budget, because it shows which terms carry real spend and which carry almost none. Most families discover this the wrong way round, buying nothing for eighteen months and then buying intensively in the worst possible weeks.

The shape is consistent. DP1 autumn is cheap and high-leverage: the exploration's research direction and the experimentation plan are decided, and getting them right costs a handful of hours. DP1 spring and the summer carry the experimentation work itself, which is where documentation discipline is either built or lost. DP2 autumn is the expensive term, because internal deadlines for the written components cluster there and because the Higher Level project is usually mid-flight. DP2 spring is thin for Music specifically, since the submissions are done and the budget shifts to examined subjects.

No IB session or results date in this project has been verified against ibo.org, which returns an error to automated requests, so the table below is deliberately relative rather than dated. Confirm each internal deadline with your child's Diploma coordinator and treat the school's calendar as the authority. The arithmetic column uses AED 250 an hour, which sits in the middle of the published specialist band, purely so the shape of the spend is visible. Read the pattern rather than the totals: the point is that two cheap terms early remove most of the need for one expensive term later.

Where Music marks leak, and which leaks an hour can actually plug

Paying for hours is only rational if the hours fix something that is actually losing marks. In Diploma Music the recurring losses are remarkably consistent, and they cluster around documentation and justification rather than around musicianship. A student who plays well and documents nothing will score below a student who plays modestly and evidences every decision.

The first loss is retrospective documentation. A process recorded three weeks after the fact reads as invention, because it is: the detail that earns credit is the decision that was abandoned, and nobody remembers an abandoned decision a month later. The second is unjustified material choice, where a student picks a piece because they like it and writes a paragraph of appreciation instead of a reason tied to an area of inquiry. The third is simple overrun, where good work is trimmed badly at the last minute because nobody checked the limit until the end.

Not every leak responds to paid time at the same rate, which is what the fourth column is for. Overrun is almost free to fix if caught early and expensive to fix late. Retrospective documentation cannot be fixed at all once the work is finished, only avoided on the next component. That asymmetry, rather than any general claim about improvement, is the honest case for starting in DP1: the cheap fixes are only cheap while the work is still moving. A family choosing which component to fund first should start with whichever row in this table is still open, not with whichever one feels most urgent.

ADEK's ethics rule, the MoHRE permit, and what a cheap unpermitted hour really costs

  • The private tuition work permit is granted free of charge for two years
  • MoHRE lists a two-working-day completion time and no fee for issuance
  • No fine schedule is published, so no figure is quoted on this page
  • Abu Dhabi school staff are restricted from paid tutoring of their own students

Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, not left to the market. The MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and the eligible categories are broad: teachers registered in government or private schools, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students, and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's own service page is titled Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing and lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time, applied for through the ministry's app, website and e-services.

Because the permit costs nothing, a tutor who does not hold one is not saving money by skipping it. People offering private tutoring without a permit from MoHRE are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so no amount is quoted here; figures circulating online could not be verified against a ministry source. The practical point for a parent is narrower: a permit is free and quick, so its absence tells you something about how the arrangement is being run.

Abu Dhabi adds a second rule that matters specifically here. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics framework for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers providing paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, with the MoHRE permit's code of conduct carrying a similar restriction. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on it. Either way, the implication for a Music student is clear: the obvious cheap option, your child's own classroom music teacher taking a paid evening slot, is the option to leave alone.

08

What no amount of money buys in Diploma Music

  • Submitted components stay the student's own work in full, with no exceptions
  • Feedback on a student's draft is teaching; supplied text is malpractice
  • No score, grade jump or outcome is promised on this page or in a session
  • Official syllabus documents and past papers are linked, never reproduced

Some things in this subject are not for sale at any rate, and a provider willing to sell them is a provider to walk away from. The clearest is assessed work. Every word of the written exploration, every recording linked to the experimentation report, every item in the presenting music submission and every artefact of the Higher Level project has to be the student's own. A tutor teaches, questions, reviews and gives feedback on work the student has produced. Anyone offering finished components is offering malpractice, and the consequence lands on the student, not on the seller.

The second is a grade. No tutor can promise a 7, and any page that does is telling you something about itself rather than about your child. Marks in Music follow research quality, documentation and justification, all of which take time the student has to spend personally. A page that promises a specific score in exchange for a specific fee should be read with real scepticism, whatever the fee is.

The third is a shortcut through the school's own process. Internal deadlines, moderation and the subject teacher's judgement sit with the school, and no external tutor sits inside that. What an outside specialist can honestly add is narrower and still valuable: component interpretation that is accurate, feedback early enough to act on, and a plan that survives the term it was written in. Priced at the market specialist band, that is a reasonable purchase. Priced as a guarantee, it is a fiction.

09

When no Abu Dhabi Music specialist is free

Arts subjects are the thinnest part of the tutoring market in every emirate, and Diploma Music is thinner than Visual Arts. Pretending otherwise would be the easiest thing on this page and the least useful, so here is the position as it stands. Requests for Standard Level component work are usually matched quickly. Requests for Higher Level project supervision in a specific week take longer, and requests that insist on a UAE-resident tutor in a 17:00 slot sometimes cannot be met at all.

The fallback is disclosed rather than hidden. Where no UAE-based specialist covers a component, IB Gram matches from its wider pool of Diploma Music tutors working to Gulf Standard Time, most often from India, at the same online format and the same hourly basis. Families are told where the tutor is before a session is booked, not after. Several providers in this search route UAE parents to non-UAE numbers without saying so; the disclosure is the difference, not the arrangement.

What this means for the money is simple. Availability, not price, is the binding constraint on arts subjects in this emirate, so flexibility on timing buys more than negotiation on rate. A family that can take a 19:30 slot has a materially wider choice of specialist than a family that can only take 17:00, and at the same published band. The table sets out what to expect by request type, so the trade-off between a convenient hour and a specialist one is visible before anything is booked.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Where a family lives in Abu Dhabi changes the cost calculation more than it changes the teaching. The notes below cover school access, instrument provision and the realistic start time for an evening session in each area.

Saadiyat Island

The cultural district sits here, which makes live listening research genuinely easier for students on the island than for most Diploma Music candidates anywhere. Schools in this cluster tend to have staffed music departments. Evening sessions can start early because the commute home is short.

Al Reem Island

High-rise living, which changes the practical side: practice rooms and recording space are a building management question, not a bedroom question. Students here often record in a school room, so the submission plan has to be built around when that room is free.

Khalifa City

A villa community with a large school-going population and a long weekday-evening drive to the island. Families here feel the travel premium on a visiting tutor most sharply, and the online slot after 18:00 is the one that works once the school run and traffic have cleared.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

Settled family communities with several IB and British-curriculum schools inside the corridor. Diploma cohorts here are large enough that Standard Level Music runs reliably, but Higher Level project advice is thin on the ground, which is what families usually buy.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Older island neighbourhoods close to several long-established schools. Instrumental teaching is easy to find nearby, which sometimes hides the real gap: an instrumental teacher is not a Diploma component specialist, and the two bills cover different work.

Yas Island and West Yas

Newer campuses and a commuting population. Music provision varies by school, and some students are the only Higher Level candidate in their year. For those students a weekly online slot replaces a departmental conversation that simply does not exist.

Al Mushrif and Al Karamah

Central, well served by schools, and a short hop to most of the island. The constraint here is usually the number of mandatory and optional subjects stacked into an evening, not travel. Submission planning beats extra hours for these students.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City and Al Shamkha

Mainland communities where a visiting specialist means a drive of well over half an hour each way in the evening peak. The local tutor pool is thinner on arts subjects than on maths and sciences, so coverage, not price, is usually the binding constraint.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Island and Saadiyat schools

The longest-established international schools in the emirate sit in this cluster, and the ones running the Diploma generally have a staffed music department with instrument stock and a usable recording space. Students from these schools most often ask for component-specific help rather than subject teaching.

  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi International School
  • Repton School Abu Dhabi

Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas

A dense corridor of newer campuses with large year groups and long evening commutes. Standard Level arts courses run here, Higher Level Music less predictably, and requests from this cluster skew towards planning a submission around a cohort of one.

  • Raha International School
  • Al Yasmina Academy
  • GEMS American Academy Abu Dhabi
  • West Yas Academy
  • Emirates National Schools
  • The International School of Choueifat Abu Dhabi

Mainland and Mussafah

Schools serving the inland communities, with a wide spread of curricula and fee levels. Arts specialists are the scarcest staffing category in this cluster, so students here are the ones most likely to be studying a component their school cannot staff in depth.

  • Brighton College Abu Dhabi
  • Al Mamoura Academy
  • GEMS Cambridge International School Abu Dhabi
  • Nord Anglia International School Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi Indian School

Schools are named here as context for the Abu Dhabi school system only. IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform, is not affiliated with or endorsed by any school or group listed, and claims no accreditation from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Name the component, not the subject

Tell us which component is the problem: the written exploration, the experimentation report, presenting music, or the Higher Level project. A request phrased as the component gets matched to someone who has worked on it. A request phrased as help with Music gets matched to a general music teacher, which is a different purchase at a similar price.

  2. 02

Send a draft, a score and one recording

Before the free trial lesson, send whatever exists: a partial draft, a score, a single recording, and the school's internal deadline. The trial is then spent reading the actual work against the actual criteria instead of on introductions. One free trial lesson per student, booked without card details.

  3. 03

Agree the hours and the finish line

We quote by the hour at the market specialist band and agree how many sessions the block contains and what it ends with. Open-ended arrangements drift and cost more over a Diploma year than bounded ones. If the work finishes early, the block ends early rather than rolling on.

  4. 04

    Keep the instrumental teacher

Nothing in a Diploma Music block replaces instrumental teaching, and paying a Diploma tutor to run technique work is paying the specialist band for the wrong lesson. The two bills cover different jobs. Where a student has no instrumental teacher, the school's department is the first place to ask, not us.

  5. 05

Review on the submission, not on a feeling

At the end of the block, the test is whether the submission met its own limits, carried its documentation, and justified its material. That is checkable. A general sense that sessions were going well is not, and it is how rolling arrangements survive long past the point they were useful.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Rates quoted as the market's, with the source named

Every AED figure on this page is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it, with the month it was read. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this market publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars. A number you can trace is worth more than a number that sounds reassuring.

Component limits treated as part of the task

Word counts, timings and evidence requirements are checked against the current subject guide at the start of a block, not discovered in the final week. Overrun is the cheapest failure to prevent and one of the most expensive to fix late, which makes it the first thing a session should settle.

Online delivery stated plainly, with no travel premium

Lessons for UAE families run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE addresses, so no drive is being priced into the hour. The saving is real and it buys additional sessions rather than additional kilometres.

Availability disclosed before a booking, not after

Arts subjects are thin in this market. Where no UAE-resident specialist covers a component, the wider online pool is offered and the tutor's location is stated before anything is confirmed. No competitor page researched for this market discloses a coverage limit at all.

Submitted work stays the student's own

Teaching, questioning, marking-style feedback and process coaching on drafts the student has produced. No supplied text, no finished components, no editing to completion. One page ranking in this search sells completed assessments outright; that is an academic-integrity breach and a risk carried entirely by the student.

No accreditation claimed that we do not hold

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. It holds no approval, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE as an institution, the IB or any examination board, and it has no office in the UAE. Regulators are explained on this page, never implied as endorsers.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How much does an IB DP Music tutor cost per hour in Abu Dhabi?+

Published market bands put specialist IB tutoring at roughly AED 200-450 an hour and above. Unitors lists IB from AED 200, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and Bestimate's 2026 tutoring cost table puts specialist IB, IGCSE and A-Level work at AED 200-450 and higher, with one-to-one visits at AED 180-350. Cheaper online options exist from around AED 33-65 an hour, but those sit at the university-student end and rarely work at component level on Diploma Music. Those are other providers' figures as published in October 2026. IB Gram prices by the hour at the specialist end and starts with a free trial lesson rather than a package.

Why would a Music hour cost more than a Maths hour for the same student?+

Because the supply is thinner and the knowledge is narrower. Maths tutors who know the Diploma syllabus are plentiful in this emirate. Tutors who can say what the experimentation report asks for, what the presenting music programme notes are marked on, and how a Higher Level project has to be evidenced are not. Scarcity shows up in the rate. The counterweight is that Music hours are usually fewer and attached to a named component with a deadline, so the total spend across a Diploma year is often lower than for an examined subject that needs weekly support for two years.

Does my child still need an instrumental teacher if we book Diploma Music support?+

Yes, and they are separate purchases. An instrumental teacher builds technique, repertoire and performance readiness. A Diploma Music tutor works on the assessed components: research for the exploration, documentation for the experimentation report, selection and rationale for presenting music, and scope and evidence for the Higher Level project. No part of the Diploma grade is awarded for grade-exam standard. Paying a Diploma specialist at the specialist band to run scales is paying a premium rate for the wrong lesson, and dropping the instrumental teacher to afford it removes the thing that makes the student's own material credible.

Does IB Gram send a Music tutor to our villa in Abu Dhabi?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. Diploma Music support for families here is delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, with scores, drafts and recordings opened on a shared screen. For this subject the online format is not a compromise. Score and audio work is easier to do well on a shared screen than across a kitchen table, and removing the drive means a Khalifa City family can book a component specialist rather than whoever can reach the community by six.

How many hours does a Diploma Music component usually take to sort out?+

A written exploration commonly takes six to ten hours spread across two terms. The experimentation report takes five to eight, front-loaded, because the documentation has to happen while the work is happening. Presenting music is shorter, four to six hours near the deadline. The Higher Level project is the big one at eight to fourteen hours across DP2, mostly spent on scope and evidence rather than on music. At AED 250 an hour, the middle of the published specialist band, those ranges give a usable budget shape, and they are ranges rather than quotes.

Which term of the Diploma is the expensive one for Music?+

DP2 autumn, consistently. Internal deadlines for the written components cluster there, the Higher Level project is usually mid-flight, and every student in the cohort wants the same slots in the same fortnight. DP1 autumn is the cheapest and highest-leverage term: two to four hours spent settling the exploration's direction and the experimentation plan prevents most of the DP2 scramble. DP2 spring is close to free for Music because the submissions are closed and attention moves to examined subjects. Budgeting across the two years rather than reacting to deadlines is what lowers the total.

My child plays to a high standard. Will Diploma Music be easy for them?+

Not automatically, and this is the most common misreading of the course. The Diploma assesses research, experimentation, documentation and justification, delivered through written work and curated recordings. A student with a strong instrument can submit a weak exploration, because the exploration is a research task that happens to be about music. Instrumental fluency helps with the presenting music component and with producing credible experimentation material, so it is a real advantage. It is not the grade. The students who struggle most are often the strongest players, because nobody warned them the written half was the half that counts.

Can a tutor look at my child's experimentation report and tell us what it is missing?+

Yes, and that is a normal first session. The tutor reads the draft against what the component asks for and names what is absent, which in this component is almost always the abandoned attempt. A report that describes a clean path from idea to outcome reads as written afterwards, because the credit sits in the decisions that did not work. The feedback is on the student's own draft and the student makes the changes. A tutor never supplies text for a submitted component, and anyone offering to is offering something that puts the student's diploma at risk.

Is a cheaper tutor at AED 60 an hour ever the right choice for this subject?+

For general music theory or help catching up on missed content, possibly. For an assessed Diploma component, rarely. The lower bands in this market are staffed largely by university students and generalists, and the thing a Music submission needs is someone who knows the component's limits and failure modes. Buying four cheap hours that produce a tidy but unjustified draft costs less than two specialist hours and achieves less. The honest version of the trade-off is that the cheap hour is good value for content and poor value for criteria.

Do tutors working with Abu Dhabi students need a MoHRE permit?+

Individuals providing private tutoring in the UAE need a MoHRE private tuition work permit, introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023. It is granted free of charge for two years and covers school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's service page lists no fee and a two-working-day completion time. Those tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws; no fine schedule is published, so no amount is quoted here. Since the permit is free, its absence is a signal worth asking about.

Can we book my child's own school music teacher for paid evening sessions instead?+

That is the option to leave alone in this emirate. Press reporting on ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff describes a prohibition on teachers giving paid private tutoring to students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct is reported to carry a similar restriction. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document before relying on the detail. The practical answer is that it creates a problem for the teacher and an awkward conflict around moderation of your child's own submitted work, for no educational gain.

What should the free trial lesson actually produce for a Music student?+

One concrete change and a limit to work to. Send the current draft, a score and a recording beforehand, plus the school's internal deadline. The trial is then spent reading the real work against the real criteria rather than on introductions, and it should end with the student knowing what the next version has to do differently. One free trial lesson per student, booked without card details. If the component turns out to need less help than feared, saying so is a better outcome than selling a block nobody needed.

Is Higher Level Music worth the extra spend for a university application?+

It depends entirely on the degree direction, and it should be checked on the university's own admissions pages rather than taken from any tutoring site. Conservatoire and music-degree routes usually weigh audition and portfolio alongside grades, and a Higher Level project can be useful evidence of independent practice. For a non-music degree, Higher Level Music is one Higher Level among three and carries no special weight. What it reliably does add is a documented piece of real-world creative work, which is a different kind of asset from a points total.

Our school has only one Higher Level Music candidate this year. Does that change anything?+

It changes the cost, yes. A cohort of one has no precedent to lean on: no classmate who has already scoped a project, no accumulated departmental sense of what works. The conversation a larger cohort has for free is the conversation those families end up buying, usually three to five hours early in DP2 spent pressure-testing scope and evidence requirements. It is the single best-value purchase in this subject, because a project scoped around a venue or collaborator who later says no is very hard to rescue late.

Can sessions move during Ramadan and around school production weeks?+

Yes, and for Music they usually have to. Ramadan shifts school hours and family routines across the UAE, and post-Iftar slots work better than late afternoon for many households. School concert and production weeks matter here more than in other subjects, because the music department and its spaces are fully committed and a student's own recording time disappears. Blocks are planned around both, with the heavier documentation work placed in the quieter weeks either side rather than scheduled into a fortnight nobody is free in.

What happens if no Abu Dhabi-based Music specialist is available?+

You are told before anything is booked. Arts subjects are the thinnest category in this market, and Higher Level project supervision is thinner than Standard Level component work. Where no UAE-resident specialist covers the component, the match comes from the wider pool of Diploma Music tutors working to Gulf Standard Time, most often from India, at the same online format and the same hourly basis. The tutor's location is stated upfront. Flexibility on timing widens the choice considerably: a 19:30 slot reaches a materially larger pool than a fixed 17:00 one.

Start with the component and the deadline, not with the hourly rate

An IB DP music home tutor in Abu Dhabi is a straightforward purchase once the question is framed properly. Name the component, send the current draft and one recording, state the school's internal deadline, and the free trial lesson will tell you whether a block is worth buying and roughly how big it needs to be. Market rates in this emirate run at AED 200-450 an hour at the specialist end, and this page shows where every one of those figures comes from. Lessons run one-to-one online on Gulf Standard Time, every word submitted stays your child's own, and nothing on this page promises a grade.
