IB DP Internal Assessment Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Internal Assessment tutor in Abu Dhabi earns their fee in a narrow place: the two or three criteria where a particular student is leaking marks. IA marks are not lost evenly across a piece of work. They are lost in predictable spots, and the same five failures account for most of them in every subject. This page ranks those failures, names the criterion each one hits, and says which are still fixable at each stage. Sessions run one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

  • Diagnosis starts from the criterion, not from the subject

IA marks are lost in specific places, not spread thinly

A disappointing internal assessment mark almost never means the work was bad everywhere. It means two criteria out of four or five scored near the bottom while the rest scored respectably, and the total came out middling. That is why generic help on an IA rarely moves anything: a tutor who improves the writing in a piece whose research design was flawed has polished the part that was already fine.

The criteria are public and the school marks against them. A science investigation is marked on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, six marks each, twenty-four in total. A mathematics exploration is marked on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics, twenty marks in total with use of mathematics carrying the largest single share. History runs three sections with the investigation itself carrying most of the weight. Each scheme has its own vulnerable spots and they are consistent from cohort to cohort.

Across all of them, five failure modes recur. A topic too broad to produce a controlled, answerable question. Raw data presented without processing. A conclusion that restates the hypothesis rather than interpreting the evidence. An evaluation that lists generic weaknesses, human error being the worst of them, instead of examining the method that was actually used. And reflection or engagement written in the final hour, after the marks for it were already available during the work.

The diagnostic consequence is practical. Before buying hours, find out which criteria the school's feedback actually marked down. Most Abu Dhabi schools return a criterion-level breakdown on a first draft, and that sheet tells you whether you are buying research design, data processing or evaluation. A family that arrives with that breakdown gets a useful first session; a family that arrives with my child needs IA help gets a session spent finding the sheet.

Timing changes the answer as much as the criterion does. An investigation still at the question stage has every mark in play, because the design can be narrowed and the apparatus checked. The same investigation three days before the school's internal deadline has perhaps a third of its marks still movable: the evaluation can be made specific, the conclusion can be made to interpret rather than restate, and the presentation can be tidied, but the design, the data and the mathematics chosen are fixed. Families almost always buy at the second point and almost never at the first, which is the inverse of where the value sits.

Lessons are delivered online, one-to-one, over live video, with the draft and the descriptors on a shared screen. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE, because IA coaching is screen work by nature: the document, the spreadsheet, the graph and the criterion sit side by side, and nothing about that improves by being in the same room. What matters far more is that the tutor teaches the subject the IA belongs to.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Internally assessed work runs through the whole IB continuum, which is why some diploma students find the IA natural and others meet the idea of a marked independent investigation for the first time at sixteen.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

Each of the six subjects carries an internally assessed component, marked by the school against published criteria and then moderated by the IB. Weightings typically sit between a fifth and a third of the subject grade, and the formats differ completely: an investigation, an exploration, a recorded oral, a set of commentaries, a portfolio.

Abu Dhabi schools set their own internal deadlines inside the IB's submission windows, and those deadlines frequently cluster. A DP2 student here can face three criterion-marked drafts in one fortnight alongside mock examinations. Sequencing by marks at risk rather than by the nearest date is the single most useful planning decision a family makes in that term.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The MYP is entirely criterion-marked, with four criteria per subject and published descriptors, so a student arriving in DP1 from the MYP already understands that marks come from a descriptor rather than from a percentage. The sciences criterion on inquiring and designing is a direct ancestor of IA research design.

This is the clearest advantage an Abu Dhabi continuum student has over a transferring student, and it is routinely wasted. A student who has written MYP criterion C reflections for five years can read an IA descriptor fluently. A student arriving from an examination-only system in DP1 often cannot, and that gap shows up in the first IA draft rather than in a test.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

No formal assessment of this kind, but the PYP's inquiry cycle teaches the habit an IA depends on: asking a question narrow enough to investigate, planning how to find out, and saying what the finding did and did not show. Those three steps are the structure of every internal assessment in the diploma.

Families moving into an Abu Dhabi continuum school part-way through primary sometimes see the inquiry approach as unstructured compared with what they left. The payoff arrives much later, in whether a sixteen-year-old can narrow their own question without being handed one, which is where IA marks begin.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

CP students take DP courses and therefore sit the internally assessed components belonging to those courses, but the CP core replaces Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay with a reflective project and other components assessed on their own criteria.

The practical point in Abu Dhabi is that a CP student's workload shape is different: fewer internally assessed subject components, plus a reflective project with its own deadline. Support bought against the wrong set of criteria is wasted, so confirm with the coordinator which components your child is actually registered for.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each subject's internal assessment is a different piece of work with its own criteria. These are the ones Abu Dhabi diploma students most often need help with, and the criterion that usually costs them.

Biology

SL and HL

A scientific investigation marked on research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. The habitual loss is research design: a question with uncontrolled variables, often because the organism or the environment refused to cooperate and the method was not adjusted in the write-up.

Chemistry

SL and HL

Same four criteria as the other sciences. Loss concentrates in data analysis, where uncertainties and propagation are handled loosely, and in evaluation, where a weakness is named without being connected to the data it actually distorted.

Physics

SL and HL

The investigation most likely to produce a clean relationship and the least likely to interrogate it. Conclusion is the vulnerable criterion: a gradient is calculated, matched to theory, and never situated in the wider physics that would make it meaningful.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

SL and HL

The exploration is marked on presentation, mathematical communication, personal engagement, reflection and use of mathematics. Use of mathematics carries the most marks and is where HL students lose by using mathematics comfortably below the level of their course.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Same five criteria. The characteristic loss is reflection: a student models a real situation competently, produces an answer, and never asks whether the model was appropriate or what its limits were, which is the criterion in plain sight.

History

SL and HL

A historical investigation in three sections, with the investigation itself carrying the bulk of the marks. Source evaluation is where it is won: value and limitation handled by origin, purpose and content rather than by labelling a source primary or secondary.

Economics

SL and HL

Commentaries on published news extracts, each inside a tight word limit. The recurring failure is explaining the theory and forgetting to apply it to the specific article, or choosing an extract too thin to carry a diagram and an evaluation.

Psychology

SL and HL

A report on an experimental study with human participants, which means school ethics approval sits on the critical path. The commonest cost is a design approved late, compressing the analysis and the discussion into a weekend.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

The individual oral, recorded at school on a global issue through two texts, with an additional HL essay at higher level. Marks go on whether the global issue is genuinely traced through both extracts rather than announced and abandoned.

Geography

SL and HL

A fieldwork report built on data the student collected, which makes site choice decisive. Abu Dhabi offers workable urban and coastal fieldwork, but a site chosen for convenience rather than for the question costs marks in the written analysis.

Visual Arts

SL and HL

Internally assessed components alongside the exhibition, with limits set in the current subject guide. The habitual loss is description of works rather than comparison and analysis, which is the same discipline problem that affects arts essays generally.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Internal assessment support works in short, targeted shapes. All of it is delivered one-to-one over live video with the draft and the descriptors on screen together.

Criterion diagnostic, one session

A single session that reads the draft against the published descriptors and reports which criteria are scoring low and why. The output is a written note naming the criterion, the evidence in the draft and the specific change required. Many families need nothing beyond this.

  • The school's own criterion feedback used as the starting point
  • Each criterion scored with the reason stated
  • Changes ranked by marks recoverable against hours required
  • Written up so the student can act on it alone

Design and feasibility block, before the work begins

Two or three sessions in the planning phase: narrowing the question, controlling the variables, confirming the method can run with the apparatus the school actually has, and checking that the data the design produces can be processed meaningfully.

  • Question narrowed until the variables are controllable
  • Apparatus and ethics constraints checked before writing a method
  • A pilot planned so a flawed design fails cheaply
  • Data-processing route decided in advance, not after collection

Analysis and evaluation block, after data collection

Two to four sessions on the half of the mark scheme that students neglect: processing raw data correctly, handling uncertainty, writing a conclusion that interprets rather than restates, and an evaluation grounded in the method actually used.

  • Raw data processed, not merely tabulated
  • Uncertainty treated as part of the analysis
  • Conclusion tied to the data and situated in the subject
  • Evaluation written about this method, never about human error

01

The five ways an internal assessment loses marks, ranked

Across subjects and across cohorts, the same five failures account for the large majority of lost IA marks. They are worth ranking because the ranking tells a family where to spend attention, and because four of the five can be prevented at a stage when prevention is nearly free.

First and most expensive is a topic too broad to control. A question that cannot name its independent variable, or that covers a decade of history, or that models an entire market, fails at the design criterion and then poisons everything downstream: the data cannot be processed cleanly, so the conclusion cannot interpret it, so the evaluation has nothing specific to evaluate. One flawed decision in week one costs marks in three criteria.

Second is raw data presented as analysis. A table of measurements and a scatter plot are not data analysis; processing is. Means with uncertainties, gradients with their meaning, appropriate graph types, and a clear line from the numbers to the claim. Students who collect carefully and process lightly lose a whole criterion while believing the work was thorough.

Third is the conclusion that restates the hypothesis. The temperature increased the rate, as predicted, is not a conclusion in the sense the criterion means. The criterion wants interpretation, a link to accepted subject knowledge, and an honest statement of what the data supports and how strongly.

Fourth is the generic evaluation. Human error, more time, better equipment: these phrases appear in thousands of IAs and earn nothing, because they are not about this investigation. Fifth is reflection and engagement written in the final hour, which is the cheapest criterion in the diploma to score and the most commonly thrown away.

The table below maps each failure to the criteria it damages and to the point at which it can still be fixed. Read the last column before buying hours: two of these are fully recoverable in a week and two are not.

02

The science investigation, criterion by criterion

The scientific investigation in Biology, Chemistry and Physics is marked on four criteria of six marks each: research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation. Twenty-four marks in total, and the balance is the thing to notice. Half the available marks sit after the data has been collected, which is the half most students treat as writing up.

Research design asks for a focused question, identified and controlled variables, and a method with enough detail that someone else could repeat it. The commonest loss here is a method lifted from a class practical sheet and lightly adapted, which signals that the student did not design anything. The second is a question whose variables cannot actually be held constant, discovered during collection and never acknowledged in the write-up.

Data analysis rewards processing: calculations shown, uncertainties handled consistently, graphs chosen because they reveal the relationship rather than because the software offered them, and enough repetition to say something about reliability. A student who records three trials and averages them without reference to spread has processed arithmetically and not scientifically.

Conclusion wants interpretation set against accepted subject knowledge, with the strength of the claim matched to the quality of the evidence. Evaluation wants the weaknesses of this method, their specific effect on these results, and improvements that are realistic and targeted. The difference between a low and a high evaluation is almost always specificity: not the measurements were imprecise, but the thermometer's resolution was the limiting factor on the smaller temperature intervals, which compressed the differences the question depended on.

Word limits apply to these investigations and are set in the current subject guide, with the sciences working to a limit in the region of three thousand words. Confirm the figure and what it includes with your child's teacher, since appendices, tables and captions are treated differently between subjects and guides are revised.

03

The mathematics exploration, criterion by criterion

The exploration is a different animal from a science investigation and students frequently approach it as though it were an essay about maths. It is marked on five criteria totalling twenty marks, and the largest single allocation is use of mathematics. That is the criterion that decides whether the piece reads as a diploma-level exploration or as a well-presented project.

Use of mathematics rewards mathematics at the level of the course, used correctly, with understanding demonstrated rather than asserted. The characteristic HL failure is a student exploring something genuinely interesting with mathematics drawn from two years earlier. The characteristic SL failure is the reverse: a reach into unfamiliar mathematics copied without understanding, which the criterion penalises harder than modest mathematics handled well.

Mathematical communication is where tidy students lose marks they did not know were available. Symbols must be defined, notation must be consistent, calculator and software syntax must not leak into the formal mathematics, and graphs need labels and scales that mean something. None of this is difficult and all of it is mechanical, which makes it the best value on the sheet.

Personal engagement and reflection together carry a meaningful share of the twenty marks and are the two criteria most often abandoned. Engagement is not enthusiasm in an introduction; it is evidence of the student's own thinking in the choices made. Reflection is not a paragraph at the end; it is a thread through the work, asking at each stage whether the mathematics did what was wanted and what its limits were. The table sets out all five with what each rewards.

On length, the guidance is expressed in pages rather than words and sits in the region of twelve to twenty for a typical exploration. Treat it as guidance on scale rather than a target to hit, and confirm the current figure through your coordinator.

MATHEMATICS EXPLORATION CRITERIA — MARKS, WHAT IS REWARDED, AND THE COMMONEST LOSS

B — Mathematical communication4Defined symbols, consistent notation, labelled graphsUndefined variables and calculator syntax in formal workUnder one session
C — Personal engagement3Evidence of the student's own thinking in the choices madeA topic taken from a list with no personal angle developedBest addressed at topic choice
D — Reflection3Reflection threaded through, on whether the mathematics workedA single reflective paragraph bolted on at the endOne to two sessions
E — Use of mathematics6Mathematics at course level, used correctly and understoodMathematics well below the level of the course, or copied above itOnly before the mathematics is chosen
04

Topic choice decides the mark before any work is done

  • State the question in one sentence with its variables named
  • Confirm apparatus, reagents and ethics approval before writing a method
  • Check the data the design produces can actually be processed
  • Choose mathematics or theory at the level of the course, not below it
  • Pick something the student will still care about in eight weeks

If a family can influence only one thing about an internal assessment, it should be the topic, and the window for that is short. A question narrow enough to be controlled, with data the student can actually obtain and mathematics or theory at the level of the course, sets a ceiling on the whole piece. A broad question sets a low one that no amount of later effort raises.

The practical test is whether the student can state the question in one sentence with its variables named. In the sciences that means an independent variable, a dependent variable and the things being held constant. In History it means a question about a bounded body of sources. In Economics it means one article, one diagram, one piece of theory. In mathematics it means a specific mathematical object or relationship rather than an area of interest.

The second test is feasibility, and in Abu Dhabi it is usually about apparatus and approval. A method requiring equipment the school laboratory does not hold, reagents it will not sanction, or ethics approval for human participants that has not been requested, is a design that will be discovered in week six. Settling this before a method is written is nearly free. Settling it afterwards is a restart.

The third is whether the student cares. Personal engagement is an explicit criterion in the mathematics exploration and an implicit advantage everywhere else, because a student working on something they chose produces better reflection and more honest evaluation. A topic selected from a departmental list to save a decision tends to produce a competent, forgettable piece in the middle band.

05

Why human error is the worst sentence in an IA

Every evaluation criterion in the diploma rewards the same thing: a specific account of how the method used affected the results obtained, and improvements that address that specific effect. Every weak evaluation does the same thing instead: names a universal limitation that would apply to any investigation ever conducted.

Human error is the worst offender because it explains nothing and implies that the student does not know which part of their own procedure was unreliable. More time and better equipment are close behind. A marker reading those phrases cannot award the criterion, not out of strictness, but because there is nothing there to credit.

What earns the criterion is unglamorous and specific. The instrument's resolution relative to the differences being measured. The time between preparing a solution and using it. The fact that the room temperature drifted by several degrees across the afternoon because the measurements ran from one to five. A variable that was supposed to be controlled and demonstrably was not, with the evidence in the data to show it.

That means evaluation depends on a record kept during the work, not reconstructed after it. A student who notes what went wrong as it happens writes a strong evaluation in an hour. A student who finishes collecting and then tries to remember writes human error, because that is all that is left. The cheapest intervention available in any IA is a running log of problems, dated, kept while the work is live.

06

What the school sends, what the IB checks, and what that means for a mark

Internal assessment means marked by the school, not marked loosely. The teacher applies the published criteria, the school submits marks and a sample of the work, and the IB checks the school's application of the standard. Where a school has applied the descriptors generously or harshly across its cohort, the IB can adjust that school's marks for the component.

Two consequences follow for a family. The first is that a draft mark from a teacher is an indication rather than a promise, and a student should not plan their overall grade around an optimistic internal figure. The second is that arguing with a teacher about a mark is rarely productive, because the teacher is applying a standard they are also accountable to.

The useful response is to work on the criterion rather than the number. If data analysis scored in the middle band, the question is what the descriptor for the band above actually asks for and whether the draft can show it. That is a concrete conversation with a concrete answer, and it is the whole content of a productive IA session.

The school also keeps control of what is submitted and when. Internal deadlines are set by the school inside the IB's submission window and are usually earlier than students assume, sometimes by weeks. We publish no IB submission or results dates on this page: the IB's own site is the authority and it does not permit automated checking, so any date printed here would be second-hand. Ask the coordinator.

07

Collision weeks in the Abu Dhabi diploma calendar

A full diploma candidate completes six internal assessments plus the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge components. Schools in Abu Dhabi set their internal deadlines independently by department, and the predictable result is that three criterion-marked drafts land in the same fortnight, usually alongside mock examinations.

Sequencing matters more than effort in that fortnight, and the right rule is marks at risk rather than nearest deadline. An IA worth thirty per cent of a subject grade with two criteria scoring low has more recoverable marks than one worth twenty per cent that is already solid. Students default to the nearest date, which is how a strong piece gets polished while a weak one is submitted unimproved.

Ramadan adds a specific local layer. School hours shorten, afternoon energy drops and the productive working window moves to after Iftar. Where Ramadan falls across an IA deadline cluster, the families who plan for it keep their sessions and move them later in the evening rather than pausing for the month. Data processing and writing go better in the morning during that period, so weekend slots earn their place.

The practical sequence we recommend is simple. Ask each department for the internal deadline in writing. List the IAs with their weighting and the criteria currently scoring low. Work on the two with the most recoverable marks. Hand the solid one a checklist and submit it. That ordering is unglamorous and it reliably outperforms working on whichever deadline is closest.

08

What a tutor may do with an internal assessment, and what nobody may do

Internal assessment is where the IB's academic-honesty rules bite hardest, because the work is produced over weeks away from supervision and the school has to authenticate it as the student's own. A candidate found to have submitted work that is not theirs faces an IB malpractice process whose consequences can reach the whole diploma rather than the single subject.

The legitimate scope of a tutor is wide and specific. Teaching the subject content the investigation needs. Explaining what a descriptor band actually asks for. Marking the student's own draft against the criteria and saying which band it sits in and why. Asking whether a conclusion is supported by the data. Pointing out that an evaluation is generic. Teaching how to process data, propagate an uncertainty or structure a reflection, using a different example.

Outside that scope: supplying text, rewriting a section, providing the data, performing the calculations, building an outline for the student to fill, and editing a draft to completion. The test is whether the student could explain and reproduce every part of what is submitted. IB Gram does not supply completed coursework in any subject and does not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides, assessment instruments, mark schemes or exemplar work.

This is also the part of the market a parent should examine most carefully. Operations advertising against searches like this one sell finished internally assessed work outright, at a price, with a turnaround. That is not premium tutoring. It is a malpractice exposure transferred onto the student, and the student is the one the IB's procedures apply to.

09

What one session can move, and what it cannot

Families usually ask how many sessions an IA needs. The better question is what stage the work is at, because the stage determines which criteria are still in play. An investigation at the design stage has every mark available. The same investigation three days before submission has perhaps a third of them.

Before data collection, everything is movable: the question can be narrowed, the variables controlled, the apparatus checked, the processing route planned. This is where two or three hours buy more than ten hours later, and it is the stage families least often buy, because nothing looks wrong yet.

After collection and before the draft, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation are fully available, which in the sciences is three of four criteria and eighteen of twenty-four marks. Research design is fixed, but an honest account of its limitations feeds the evaluation, so even a flawed design is not wasted if it is reported accurately.

In the final week, what remains is presentation, communication, the conclusion's wording and the evaluation's specificity. Those are real marks and they are worth a session. What is gone is the design, the data and the mathematics chosen. A provider who promises substantial improvement at that stage is either misunderstanding the criteria or offering to do the work, and the table below is the honest version.

There is one more case worth naming, because it comes up every year in Abu Dhabi. A student with a genuinely unusable design, discovered with weeks rather than days remaining, sometimes has the option of a reduced but salvageable version: a narrower question using the data already collected, agreed with the teacher. That is a conversation with the department, not with a tutor, and it is almost always better than submitting an investigation whose design the student cannot defend.

Where the recoverable marks no longer justify the hours, we say so. A family in the last week of a solid IA is usually better served by a presentation checklist and an hour on evaluation wording than by a block of sessions, and the time saved is better spent on examined papers where a grade boundary is still in reach.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi areas our IA students come from

IA enquiries from this emirate arrive in waves tied to school internal deadlines rather than to geography. These are the areas they come from, and what local scheduling does to a session.

Khalifa City

The largest volume of IA enquiries in the emirate, across several schools with different internal deadline calendars. Buses home between 3:30pm and 4:15pm make a 5pm or 6pm session workable on school nights.

Al Reem Island

Short commutes and dense diploma numbers. Requests here skew towards science investigations, and often arrive with the school's criterion-level feedback already in hand, which makes the first session twice as useful.

Saadiyat Island

Mature diploma cohorts with experienced IA practice. Enquiries tend to be students chasing the top band on one criterion rather than students in difficulty, and the work is usually evaluation or reflection.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

Mainland corridor families running several timetables at once. A fixed slot through the IA fortnight beats flexibility, because an investigation left for a week loses its thread and the student restarts the analysis.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Established island neighbourhoods near long-running schools. Traffic on and off the island at 3pm to 4pm makes a fixed afternoon arrangement unreliable, which online delivery removes as a factor.

Al Reef

Long bus routes and later arrivals home, so sessions run after 6pm. Weekend mornings work well for data-processing work, which needs an uninterrupted stretch rather than a tired hour.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Substantial diploma population with a heavy science bias in IA requests. Feasibility is the recurring theme: whether the planned investigation can actually run with the apparatus the school has available.

Yas Island

Newer campuses with IA practice still settling, which shows up as inconsistent draft feedback between departments. Students here benefit most from being taught to read the descriptor themselves.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Bring the school's criterion feedback

Most Abu Dhabi departments return a criterion-level breakdown on a first draft. That sheet names which criteria scored low, which is the whole starting point. A family that arrives with it gets a working first session; without it, the first session is spent reconstructing what the teacher already said.

  2. 02

Say what stage the work is at

Question not approved, data collected but unprocessed, or draft returned with a mark. The stage determines which criteria are still available and therefore how many hours are worth buying. We will tell you when the answer is one session rather than six.

  3. 03

Match on the subject, not on IA in general

A science investigation needs a scientist who has marked research design. A mathematics exploration needs someone who can judge whether the mathematics is at course level. There is no general internal assessment tutor, and treating it as one subject is the commonest matching error.

  4. 04

Score the draft against the descriptors

The first working session reads the student's draft against the published criteria, states which band each criterion sits in, and explains what the band above asks for. The output is written, ranked by marks recoverable per hour, and usable without us.

  5. 05

Work the criteria that are still open

Design work before collection, processing and conclusion after it, evaluation and specificity at the end. We will not sell design hours on a finished investigation, and we will say plainly when the recoverable marks no longer justify the sessions.

  6. 06

Hand back a checklist and close

Presentation and communication marks can be secured by the student from a checklist. When the analytical work is done we end the block and say so in writing, rather than continuing through the deadline on an open arrangement.

Diagnosis by criterion, in writing

Every engagement starts by scoring the student's own draft against the published descriptors and naming the band each criterion sits in. A parent gets a written note of which criteria are losing marks and what the band above requires, which is checkable rather than impressionistic.

Subject specialists, not IA generalists

Research design in Biology, uncertainty propagation in Physics, source evaluation in History and use of mathematics in an exploration are four different judgements. We match on the subject because the criteria can only be applied by someone who teaches it.

Honest about what each stage can still change

In the final week, presentation and evaluation wording are available and the design is not. We say that rather than selling hours against criteria that have closed, and we publish the stage-by-stage version of it on this page.

A hard line on authorship

We teach, explain descriptors, mark drafts and question reasoning. We do not supply text, provide data, perform calculations, build outlines to be filled in or edit to completion, and we do not distribute IB guides, instruments or exemplar work.

Sequencing advice for the collision fortnight

When three criterion-marked drafts land together, we help rank them by marks at risk rather than by nearest deadline, which is the ordering that recovers the most and the one students least often choose on their own.

Scheduled to the Abu Dhabi school week

Sessions run in Gulf Standard Time after bus arrivals from the island and the mainland corridor, with later slots for Al Reef and Mohammed Bin Zayed City, weekend mornings for data processing, and post-Iftar timing during Ramadan.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

What does Internal Assessment mean across the six IB Diploma subjects?+

It means the component your child's own school marks against published criteria, with the IB then checking how the school applied the standard. The format differs completely by subject: a scientific investigation, a mathematical exploration, a historical investigation in three sections, commentaries on news extracts in Economics, a recorded oral in the languages, portfolio work in the arts. What they share is criterion marking, a length limit and an internal deadline set by the school rather than by the IB.

How much of the final grade does an IA carry in each subject?+

Typically between a fifth and a third of the subject grade, varying by subject and by level. The sciences and mathematics sit around a fifth; several written subjects carry more at standard level than at higher level, because the external papers take up more of the higher-level grade. Those proportions change when the IB revises a subject guide, so confirm the current weighting for each of your child's six subjects with the DP coordinator rather than relying on any third-party page.

What are the four criteria on the science investigation worth?+

Research design, data analysis, conclusion and evaluation, at six marks each, twenty-four in total. The balance is the thing worth noticing: half the available marks sit after the data has been collected, in the half of the work students treat as writing up. Research design is the only criterion that closes early. Analysis, conclusion and evaluation remain fully available right up to the draft, which is why a student who has already collected data is far from out of options.

Which criterion do maths explorations lose marks on most often?+

Use of mathematics, which carries the largest single allocation of the twenty marks. The usual higher-level failure is exploring an interesting idea with mathematics drawn from two years earlier, which reads as comfortable rather than as diploma level. The opposite failure is reaching into unfamiliar mathematics copied without understanding, which the criterion penalises more heavily than modest mathematics handled properly. Both are decided at topic choice, which is why that conversation is worth more than any later session.

Does the school's IA mark always reach the IB unchanged?+

Not necessarily. The school marks against the published criteria, submits its marks and a sample of work, and the IB checks how consistently the school applied the standard. Where a school has been generous or harsh across its cohort, the component marks for that school can be adjusted. The practical implications: treat a draft mark as an indication rather than a promise, do not plan a predicted grade around an optimistic internal figure, and work on the criterion rather than arguing about the number.

Is there a page limit on the mathematics exploration?+

The guidance for the exploration is expressed as a page range rather than a word count and sits in the region of twelve to twenty pages for a typical piece. Treat it as an indication of scale rather than a target: a short exploration that handles course-level mathematics correctly scores better than a padded one that does not. Appendices and how graphs are counted vary, so confirm the current figure and what it includes with your child's teacher before planning the structure.

What is the 3,000 word limit on the science investigation measured against?+

The investigation works to a word limit set in the current subject guide, in the region of three thousand words, and what counts towards it is the part families get wrong. Treatment of tables, captions, calculations, data in appendices and references differs between subjects and between guide revisions. Ask the teacher directly what is included, because a student who assumes appendices are free and then has to cut two thousand words in the final week loses marks in presentation and in analysis simultaneously.

Why do strong students lose marks on the evaluation criterion?+

Because strong students write confident general statements, and the criterion rewards specific ones. It wants the weaknesses of this method, their measurable effect on these results, and improvements that address that effect. A capable student writes that precision could be improved; the criterion wants to know that the thermometer's resolution was the limiting factor on the smaller intervals, which compressed the very differences the question depended on. Specificity requires a record kept during the work rather than reconstructed afterwards.

Why is "human error" the worst thing to write in an IA evaluation?+

Because it credits nothing and signals that the student does not know which part of their own procedure was unreliable. It would apply to any investigation ever conducted, which is precisely why it earns no marks. More time and better equipment sit in the same category. What does earn the criterion is unglamorous: an instrument's resolution against the differences measured, a delay between preparing and using a solution, a room temperature that drifted across the afternoon, a control variable that demonstrably was not held constant.

When should an Abu Dhabi DP1 student start their first IA?+

At the question, as early as the department allows, because that is the only stage where every criterion is still fully available. Two or three hours spent narrowing a question, naming the variables and confirming that the apparatus and any ethics approval actually exist will do more than ten hours spent later. Students and families delay because nothing looks wrong yet, which is exactly why it is the cheapest point to intervene and the stage almost nobody buys support for.

Can a tutor mark an IA draft against the criteria?+

Yes, and it is the most useful thing a tutor does. Reading the student's own draft against the published descriptors, stating which band each criterion sits in, explaining what the band above asks for and ranking the fixes by marks recoverable is legitimate teaching. What is not legitimate is supplying text, rewriting sections, providing data, performing the calculations, handing over an outline to be filled in, or editing a draft to completion. The student must be able to explain and reproduce everything submitted.

What happens if two IAs are due in the same week?+

Sequence by marks at risk rather than by the nearest deadline, which is the opposite of what most students do. An internal assessment carrying a larger share of its subject grade with two criteria scoring low has more recoverable marks than a solid one carrying less. Work the two with the most available marks, hand the solid one a presentation checklist and submit it. Ask each department for its internal deadline in writing first, because those dates are usually earlier than students assume.

Does personal engagement really carry marks in the maths exploration?+

Yes, as a named criterion, alongside reflection. Together they are a meaningful share of the twenty marks and they are the two most commonly abandoned. Engagement is not enthusiasm declared in an introduction; it is visible evidence of the student's own thinking in the choices they made and the directions they took. Reflection is not a closing paragraph; it is a thread asking at each stage whether the mathematics did what was wanted and what its limits were. Both are far easier to earn during the work.

How many IA commentaries does Economics require and how long are they?+

The Economics internal assessment is a set of commentaries on published news extracts, each inside a tight word limit in the region of eight hundred words, with the number and the exact limit set in the current subject guide. The two recurring failures are explaining a theory at length without applying it to the specific article, and choosing an extract too thin to support a diagram and a genuine evaluation. Extract selection is the decision that determines the mark, and it takes minutes to get right.

Can my child change the IA topic after the school has approved it?+

That is the department's decision, not a tutor's, and the answer depends on how far the work has gone and how close the internal deadline is. Where a design is genuinely uncontrollable, raising it early with the teacher is far better than collecting unusable data and hoping the write-up disguises it. Where data has already been collected, an honest account of the design's limitations can feed the evaluation criterion well, so a flawed design is not automatically a lost investigation.

Is an IA mark the same as the final subject grade?+

No. The internal assessment is one component contributing its published share of the subject grade, with the external papers carrying the rest. A strong IA raises the total and does not rescue weak papers, and a weak IA is not fatal to a good grade. It is worth knowing the arithmetic for each of your child's six subjects, because it tells you where revision time is actually worth spending in the final term rather than where it feels most urgent.

Find the criterion, then decide the hours

Ask your child's department for the criterion-level feedback on the draft, and look at which two criteria scored low. That sheet, plus the stage the work is at, tells you almost everything about what is worth buying: design hours before data collection, processing and conclusion work after it, evaluation specificity at the end, and nothing at all against criteria that have already closed. Tell us the subject, the stage and which criteria the school marked down, and we will match an IB DP Internal Assessment tutor in Abu Dhabi who teaches that subject, with one free trial session and a written criterion diagnosis either way.
