IB DP Extended Essay Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP Extended Essay tutor in Abu Dhabi should be bought as a block of hours with an end date, not as a weekly subscription. The essay is one 4,000-word project marked against five criteria worth 34 marks in total, and most of those marks are won or lost in the first fortnight. This page puts the AED bands on the record, shows which criteria the hours should follow, and names the two stages where families here reliably overpay. Sessions run one-to-one over live video.

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

The Extended Essay is a project, so price it like one

Families in Abu Dhabi buy Extended Essay help in one of two shapes, and only one of them is good value. The first is a block: a defined number of hours attached to defined stages, starting with the research question and ending before the final submission, with a number agreed at the outset. The second is a monthly arrangement that starts in DP1 and quietly continues until the deadline, which is how an AED 300 hourly rate becomes a four-figure total that nobody reviewed.

Market rates give you the arithmetic to choose. One-to-one tutoring in the UAE, surveyed in October 2026, runs from roughly AED 45 an hour at the university-student end to AED 650 and above for a premium named tutor. Agency start rates are around AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table puts the subject-specialist band at AED 200 to 450 plus and in-home visits at AED 180 to 350. Those are market figures with their sources, not our price list.

Applied to an Extended Essay, a realistic block is somewhere between eight and sixteen hours spread across a year, heavily loaded at the front. At specialist rates that is a sum a family can plan around and compare. What it is not is a monthly line item, and a provider who cannot tell you how many hours they expect to need has not scoped the work.

There is a prior question that costs nothing and changes the answer. Every Extended Essay has a school supervisor whose time is already inside your fees, allocated around three reflection sessions and a concluding discussion. In Abu Dhabi the amount of that time a student actually receives varies between schools and between departments inside the same school, depending on how many candidates a supervisor is carrying. Ask the coordinator before buying anything, because where supervision is genuinely strong the right block is short or nothing at all.

Where the hours go matters as much as how many there are. The essay is marked against five criteria worth 34 marks in total, and they are not equally weighted. Criterion C, critical thinking, carries by far the largest share on its own. Criterion D, presentation, carries the smallest. Yet the hours families buy most readily are formatting, proofreading and bibliography tidying, which sit in the smallest criterion. That mismatch is the single most expensive habit in Extended Essay spending.

IB Gram mentors Extended Essays as one-to-one online sessions over live video for families across Abu Dhabi. We do not send tutors to homes in the UAE; in-home visits are a service we run only in India. Every word of the essay and of the reflections is the student's own: we ask whether a claim is supported, whether the research question is answerable in 4,000 words, and whether the method matches the question. We do not supply text, rewrite sections, or comment on a draft about to be submitted as final.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Only the Diploma Programme requires an Extended Essay, but the research habits it assesses are built earlier and the cost of not building them lands here. This is how the spend typically falls across the continuum in Abu Dhabi.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme

One independent research essay of up to 4,000 words in a chosen subject, supervised by a school supervisor, with three reflections recorded on the reflections on planning and progress form and a concluding discussion. Graded A to E and combined with Theory of Knowledge to produce the diploma core points.

Abu Dhabi schools vary widely in how much supervision time they actually deliver against the IB's recommended allocation. Where a supervisor is carrying eight students alongside a full teaching timetable, the gap families fill externally is real. Where supervision is strong, buying external mentoring on top is paying twice, and asking the coordinator how many supervision hours are scheduled is a free way to find out which you are in.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme

The Personal Project is the Extended Essay's direct ancestor: an independent piece of work with a process journal, a product and a report, assessed on planning, action and reflection. A student who kept a real process journal in the MYP finds the reflections requirement familiar rather than baffling.

This is the cheapest preparation available anywhere in the continuum and almost nobody pays for it, which is correct. Reopening a completed Personal Project's process journal at the start of DP1 costs nothing and removes two of the three places Extended Essay projects stall in Abu Dhabi: vague questions and reflections written in a panic the night before a deadline.

PYPAges 3-12 · FS1-Year 6

Primary Years Programme

The PYP Exhibition is a collaborative inquiry with a presentation rather than an essay, but it introduces the idea that a question is chosen, narrowed and defended. No external support is normally bought at this stage and none is needed.

Worth naming only because families arriving in Abu Dhabi from examination-driven systems sometimes treat the PYP Exhibition as a soft year. A child who has never had to narrow their own question tends to produce an unanswerable Extended Essay research question six years later, and that is the problem that costs the most to fix in DP1.

CPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Career-related Programme

CP students do not write an Extended Essay. The CP core includes a reflective project instead, assessed against its own criteria, with a different length and a different structure. Preparation for one does not transfer cleanly to the other.

The commonest overpayment in the Abu Dhabi core is a CP student being charged for Extended Essay mentoring, or a DP student being coached against reflective project criteria. Both happen. Confirm with the coordinator which core component your child is registered for before paying anyone for support against it.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Subject choice changes the research question, the data problem and therefore the hours required. These are the Extended Essay subjects Abu Dhabi students pick most often, with the cost logic attached to each.

Biology

Extended Essay subject

Popular and expensive to support when the student plans primary experimental work, because a method that cannot be run in a school laboratory has to be redesigned. Secondary-data essays using published datasets cost less to mentor and often score better, since criterion C rewards analysis rather than apparatus.

Chemistry

Extended Essay subject

Same pattern as Biology with a sharper safety constraint. The commonest rescue job is a question requiring equipment or reagents the school will not sanction, discovered in week six. One early session on feasibility saves several later.

Physics

Extended Essay subject

Attracts ambitious questions with no measurable outcome. Mentoring hours here go almost entirely into narrowing: turning a question about a phenomenon into a question about a measurable relationship that 4,000 words can actually settle.

Mathematics

Extended Essay subject

Comparatively cheap to support because the data problem disappears, but demanding on criterion C: the essay must argue, not merely derive. Under-chosen in Abu Dhabi cohorts, and distinctive when done with discipline.

Economics

Extended Essay subject

Needs a genuine dataset and a theoretical frame that fits it. Regional data on trade, energy, tourism and labour markets is accessible, which keeps the hours down, but questions about the whole economy are unanswerable and get rewritten late at cost.

Business Management

Extended Essay subject

Attractive because local case material is plentiful, risky because the question frequently becomes a consultancy report rather than an analysis. Mentoring time goes into holding an analytical frame instead of a recommendation.

History

Extended Essay subject

Strong value per mentoring hour when the student has access to a bounded body of sources. The expensive failure is a topic requiring archives nobody here can reach; the cheap success is a narrower question on sources available in English and Arabic online.

Psychology

Extended Essay subject

Primary research with human participants raises ethics requirements that schools must approve, and an ethics refusal in week eight is an expensive restart. Essays built on published studies avoid that entirely and are frequently stronger on critical thinking.

English A: Language and Literature

Extended Essay subject

Low data cost, high analytical demand. The text is available, so hours go into the argument rather than into logistics. The commonest problem is a question that invites summary of the work instead of an argument about it.

Visual Arts

Extended Essay subject

Requires specific works the student can examine properly, which the emirate's galleries and collections make more feasible than in many places. Mentoring is about resisting biography and description in favour of analysis.

World Studies

Extended Essay subject

An interdisciplinary route built around a global issue examined through two subjects. Genuinely harder to mentor, because the essay must integrate rather than alternate between the two lenses, and that usually means more hours than a single-subject essay.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Extended Essay mentoring works in three shapes, and the cheapest one is the one most families skip. All are delivered one-to-one over live video.

Research question block, DP1

Two or three sessions aimed entirely at the question: is it answerable in 4,000 words, is the method feasible with the resources actually available, does it invite analysis rather than description. The highest-value hours in the whole project and the cheapest point to buy them.

  • Candidate questions tested against the 4,000-word ceiling
  • Feasibility checked against school laboratory and ethics constraints
  • Subject confirmed before anything is read in volume
  • Ends with a written question the supervisor can approve

Structure and criterion C block, DP2 autumn

Three to five sessions on the argument: claims and evidence, the limits of the method, what the data does not show. Criterion C carries the largest single share of the 34 marks, and it is the criterion that responds to discussion rather than to time at a desk.

  • Argument mapped before the draft is written
  • Sources interrogated for what they cannot support
  • Limitations treated as analysis, not as apology
  • Student drafts; we question the reasoning, never supply prose

Reflection and viva preparation

One or two short sessions on the three reflections, which total 500 words across the reflections on planning and progress form, and on the concluding discussion. Small, cheap, routinely neglected, and attached to criterion E, which carries more marks than presentation does.

  • Reflections written as the project happens, not reconstructed later
  • Decisions and changes of direction recorded while they are fresh
  • The concluding discussion rehearsed as a conversation, not a script
  • All text written by the student in their own words

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What Extended Essay support costs in Abu Dhabi

A sensible Extended Essay block in this market is eight to sixteen hours spread across the year, bought at the subject-specialist rate. Market rates surveyed in October 2026 put that band at AED 200 to 450 and above per hour, with the wider UAE one-to-one range running from about AED 45 at the university-student end to AED 650 and above for a premium named tutor. Agency start rates begin around AED 150 for IGCSE and AED 200 for IB. Bestimate's Tutoring Cost Dubai 2026 rate table gives AED 200 to 450 plus for specialists and AED 180 to 350 for in-home visits.

Those are market figures with sources attached, published because a parent cannot judge a quote without them and because most pages competing for this search publish none at all. They are not IB Gram's prices. We scope the hours against the stage the project is at and discuss the plan on a consultation, with one free trial consultation per project and no card details taken beforehand.

The table below distributes a block across the five stages of the work. Read the hours column rather than the money column: it shows how front-loaded this project is. More than half the useful mentoring time sits before a single section of the essay has been drafted, and the stage families most readily pay for, final tidying, is the one with the least available marks behind it.

A quote that names a total for the essay rather than a number of hours should be refused. It is either an unscoped guess or an offer to produce the work, and the second is a malpractice problem rather than a service. Ask for the hours, the stages, the hourly figure and the point at which the block ends.

Where the 34 marks sit, and where the money should follow them

The Extended Essay is marked out of 34 across five criteria, and the distribution is lopsided in a way that should reshape any spending decision. Criterion C, critical thinking, carries twelve of those marks on its own, more than a third of the total. Criterion A, focus and method, and criterion B, knowledge and understanding, carry six each. Criterion E, engagement, assessed through the reflections, also carries six. Criterion D, presentation, carries four.

Now compare that with how families spend. Presentation is tangible: a title page, consistent referencing, a tidy contents list. It is easy to buy help with and easy to verify. It is also the smallest criterion on the sheet. Critical thinking is the opposite: hard to see, hard to buy, impossible to add at the end, and worth three times as much.

Criterion E is the quietest opportunity in the project. Engagement is assessed through 500 words of reflection written across three points in the process, and it carries the same marks as knowledge and understanding of an entire subject. Students routinely reconstruct all three reflections the week before submission, producing a bland account of a project that actually involved real decisions and real dead ends. Those dead ends are the material criterion E rewards.

The practical rule that follows is to spend early on A and C and almost nothing on D. A research question that is answerable and a method that fits it will carry criterion A for free. A student who has been asked, repeatedly, what their evidence does not show will produce criterion C writing without being taught a formula. Nothing bought in the final fortnight touches either.

03

Why the Extended Essay is bought as a block, and the two ways that goes wrong

  • Front-loaded hours beat evenly spread hours on this project
  • A session with no document on screen is a session you paid for nothing
  • Hours bought after February buy presentation, not critical thinking
  • Ask for the stage, the hour count and the end point before paying anything

Unlike a subject tutor, an Extended Essay mentor is not maintaining a weekly skill. They are helping a student through a sequence of decisions, each of which takes an hour or two and then releases weeks of independent work. The correct shape is therefore bursts with gaps, and the gaps are where the essay actually gets written.

The first way this goes wrong is the open arrangement. A weekly slot booked in September of DP1 and left running produces thirty sessions, most of which have nothing specific to do, and a total that nobody would have agreed to in advance. The tell is a session that begins with how is it going rather than with a document on screen.

The second is the compressed block. A family starts in February of DP2 with the deadline in sight and buys ten hours in three weeks. By then the research question is fixed, the reading is done, the method cannot change and criterion C cannot be rebuilt. Those ten hours are spent on presentation and panic, which is the smallest criterion and the highest hourly cost in the year, because exam-season availability is tight across this market.

The version that works is dull and cheap by comparison. Two or three hours in DP1 on the question. One or two on method. Three to five in DP2 autumn on the argument. One or two on the reflections. One at the end on checks. A family that books in that order typically spends less than a family that books a weekly slot for a term, and arrives with a stronger essay.

04

What the school supervisor already provides, and why you may be paying twice

Every Extended Essay has a school supervisor, and their time is already inside your school fees. The IB expects a limited, specified amount of supervision across the project, built around the three reflection sessions and a concluding discussion. That is not a lot of hours, but it is the authoritative guidance on the project, from someone who knows the subject, the school's internal deadlines and the student.

Before buying anything externally, ask the coordinator two questions: how many supervision hours are scheduled for this project, and how many students is the supervisor carrying. In Abu Dhabi the answers vary enormously between schools and sometimes between departments in the same school. A supervisor with two students and a free period is a different proposition from one with nine students and a full timetable.

Where supervision is strong, external mentoring should be narrow and short: a second analytical voice on criterion C, or help with a research question in a subject the supervisor does not teach. Where it is thin, the gap is real and worth filling, but it should still be filled in the stages where marks live rather than spread across the year.

What external mentoring must never do is substitute for the supervisor's role in the IB's process. The three reflections and the concluding discussion are between the student and the school. The school authenticates the work. An external mentor who positions themselves as the real supervisor is creating a documentation problem for the candidate, and the candidate is the one the IB's procedures apply to.

05

Subject choice is the cheapest decision in the project

The subject a student chooses decides the data problem, and the data problem decides the hours. An essay built on published sources costs a fraction of one built on primary research that has to be redesigned twice. This is a decision made in a single conversation in DP1 and it determines most of what follows.

The expensive pattern is familiar. A student picks a science subject out of enthusiasm, designs an experiment that requires equipment the school does not have or ethics approval it will not grant, discovers this in week six, and starts again with less time and more panic. Every hour of mentoring after that point is rescue work bought at the same rate as planning work would have been.

Abu Dhabi offers some genuine advantages that are worth using rather than ignoring. Regional economic and energy data is accessible for an Economics essay. Specific exhibited works are available for a Visual Arts or History question. A multilingual school population makes certain language and human-science questions answerable with primary material collected properly, provided the school approves the ethics in advance.

The table below sets out the commonest choices with the data problem and the cost implication attached. It is not a ranking: the right subject is the one the student can sustain for a year. It is a map of where the hours tend to go, so a family can see the bill before it arrives rather than after.

EXTENDED ESSAY SUBJECT CHOICE — DATA PROBLEM AND MENTORING COST IN THIS EMIRATE

Biology or ChemistryA measurable relationship tested experimentally or through published dataSchool laboratory limits and safety approvalHigh if primary work is planned; low if published datasets are used

06

The line between mentoring and producing, and the market that crosses it

Extended Essay support is the part of the diploma where the market is least honest. Operations advertising in this space offer finished assessed coursework outright, with a price attached and a turnaround time. That is not an expensive tutoring service. It is an academic-integrity breach that triggers the IB's malpractice procedures, and the consequence falls on the student, not on the seller.

A parent can draw the line without knowing the IB regulations in detail, because it reduces to one question: who is writing the words? A mentor may help shape a research question, test whether a method fits it, interrogate the strength of a source, ask what the evidence fails to show, point out that a paragraph asserts rather than argues, and explain what criterion C rewards. A mentor may not supply sentences, rewrite a section, build an outline for the student to fill, or edit a near-final draft.

Generated text belongs in the same category. An essay produced in part by a language model is not the student's own work, and in a 4,000-word research piece it is identifiable: generic examples, symmetrical argument, confident claims with no source behind them. Students sometimes intend to use a tool for a first pass and keep more of it than they meant to. The safe rule is that nothing enters the document the student did not write.

We also do not supply IB material. Exemplar essays, assessment instruments, subject guides and mark schemes belong to the IB and to your child's school, and reproducing them would be a copyright problem as well as poor practice. If a provider offers you a bank of past Extended Essays to work from, that tells you what kind of operation it is.

07

Cost in context, and what a legitimate quote looks like

Set against the rest of a diploma budget, a properly scoped Extended Essay block is small. Monthly tutoring packages advertised in the UAE run at AED 799 a month for eight online sessions at the budget end and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. Bestimate's 2026 monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions are AED 240 to 600 at the budget tier, AED 600 to 1,200 mid, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. An eight to sixteen hour block, bought once, sits comfortably below a year of any of those.

School fees give the wider frame. Fees are regulated at emirate level: in Dubai, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees would not rise for 2026-27 under an incentives package valued at AED 1.5 billion within a AED 2.5 billion total. In Abu Dhabi, fee applications go through ADEK, which licenses and inspects the emirate's private schools and publishes its own inspection ratings. We publish no Abu Dhabi fee figure because we have not read one on ADEK's own pages.

A legitimate quote for Extended Essay mentoring states the hourly figure, the session length in minutes, the number of hours proposed, the stages those hours cover, and the point at which the block ends. It does not quote a price for an essay. It does not require payment for a term in advance. It does not include a charge for a tutor permit, because the MoHRE private tuition work permit introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 is granted free of charge for two years.

On tax, keep the question narrow: ask whether the figure quoted to you includes VAT. The wider treatment of tuition fees under UAE VAT rules is a matter for the Federal Tax Authority rather than for a tutoring page, and anyone asserting a position on it without citing the authority is guessing on your behalf.

08

The February Extended Essay, and what it costs

The most expensive Extended Essay in Abu Dhabi is the one that starts in February of DP2. It is expensive in three separate ways, and families rarely see the third until the bill arrives.

The first is availability. Demand across this market concentrates in the weeks before the May session, when internal assessments in six subjects land alongside the essay deadline. Specialists booked in October are bought at October availability; the same request in February is filled from whoever is free, often at the top of the band.

The second is that the hours can no longer reach the marks. By February the research question is registered, the reading is done, the method is fixed and the reflections are overdue. Criterion C, twelve of the 34 marks, is built into the structure of a draft that already exists. What ten hours can still change is presentation, worth four marks, and a little of criterion E if the reflections have not yet been written.

The third is the opportunity cost inside the diploma. Ten hours bought in February are ten hours not spent on examined subjects in the final run-up, and the Extended Essay's contribution to the core points is smaller than the difference a grade boundary makes in an examined subject. A family in that position is often better advised to cap the essay work, hand the student a presentation checklist, and spend the money where marks are still movable. We will say so when that is the honest answer.

Where we tutor

Abu Dhabi areas and what they change about an Extended Essay

Extended Essay enquiries from this emirate cluster by school calendar rather than by postcode, but location does affect data access and scheduling. These are the areas they come from.

Al Reem Island

Dense diploma population with short commutes, so evening sessions are easy to schedule. Enquiries here peak in DP1 summer, which is the right time and the cheapest point to start.

Saadiyat Island

Close to major cultural institutions, which makes a Visual Arts or History essay built on specific works and exhibitions genuinely feasible rather than aspirational. That access reduces the hours a mentor needs to spend redesigning a topic.

Khalifa City

Large diploma cohorts across several schools and the widest range of supervision quality in the emirate. The first useful question from this corridor is always how many supervision hours the school has actually scheduled.

Al Raha Gardens and Al Raha Beach

Mainland corridor communities where families typically run several children's timetables at once. A front-loaded block of mentoring hours in DP1 fits this pattern better than a weekly commitment that competes with everything else.

Al Bateen and Al Mushrif

Established island neighbourhoods near long-running schools with mature supervision practice. Enquiries here are more often about criterion C refinement than about rescuing an unanswerable question.

Yas Island

Newer campuses with core practice still settling. Projects from Yas more often arrive with a research question nobody has interrogated, which is the single most expensive condition to arrive in.

Al Reef

Long bus routes and later evenings, so sessions here run after 6pm. Weekend slots work well for the front-loaded research-question work, which needs an unhurried hour rather than a tired one.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Substantial diploma population, with a high proportion of students taking science Extended Essays. That skews enquiries towards feasibility: whether the planned method can run in the school laboratory at all.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Abu Dhabi

Mainland corridor diploma schools

The largest Extended Essay cohorts in the emirate, which means supervisors carrying several students each. Where supervision time is thin, external mentoring fills a real gap; the honest first step is to establish how much supervision is scheduled.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us the stage, not the subject

Research question not yet approved, or draft written and criterion C thin, or reflections untouched three weeks out. The stage determines the hours. A request for Extended Essay help without a stage attached cannot be scoped and should not be quoted on.

  2. 02

Ask your coordinator first, and tell us the answer

How many supervision hours are scheduled, and how many students the supervisor carries. Where supervision is strong we will recommend a shorter block or none, and that is a cheaper conversation than any session we could sell you.

  3. 03

Scope the block in hours, with an end point

We state the number of hours, the stages they cover and the point at which the block closes before anything is booked. If a stage turns out to need less, the block shortens. If it needs more, we say why before adding anything.

  4. 04

Spend the first hours on the question

Candidate research questions tested against the 4,000-word ceiling and against the resources actually available, including the school laboratory and the ethics process. The output is a written question the supervisor can approve, which carries criterion A.

  5. 05

Interrogate the argument, never the prose

In DP2 autumn the sessions are about claims, evidence, counter-evidence and limitations, because that is criterion C and twelve of the 34 marks. The student drafts every word. We question reasoning and do not comment on a draft about to be submitted.

  6. 06

Close the block and hand over a checklist

Presentation is four marks and a student can secure it from a checklist without paying anyone by the hour. When the analytical work is done we end the block, say so in writing, and leave the final tidying with the student and the supervisor.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Priced in hours and stages, never per essay

A quote names the hourly figure, the session length, the hours proposed and the stages they cover. Anyone quoting a price for an Extended Essay is either guessing or offering to produce it, and the second puts the candidate at risk rather than the seller.

Hours follow the marks

Criterion C carries twelve of the 34 marks and presentation carries four, so the block is weighted accordingly. Most Extended Essay money in this market is spent the other way round, on the things that are easiest to see and worth least.

We will tell you not to buy

Where the school's supervision is strong, or where February leaves nothing movable, the honest recommendation is a shorter block or none. A family that hears that once tends to trust the scoping on everything else.

AED market bands published with sources

The figures on this page carry their survey date and origin, including Bestimate's 2026 rate table. Three of the six most visible pages serving UAE families publish no price at all and two quote in US dollars.

A hard line on authorship

The student writes every word of the essay and of the reflections. We do not supply text, build outlines to be filled in, review final drafts, or distribute IB exemplars, subject guides or mark schemes.

Scheduled to the Abu Dhabi diploma calendar

Sessions run in Gulf Standard Time around school bus arrivals from the island and the mainland corridor, with later slots for Al Reef and Mohammed Bin Zayed City, and rescheduling to post-Iftar timing during Ramadan when families ask.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How much should Extended Essay support cost in Abu Dhabi?+

Think in hours, not in totals. A properly scoped block is eight to sixteen hours across the year at the subject-specialist rate, which market figures surveyed in October 2026 put at AED 200 to 450 and above per hour. The wider UAE one-to-one range runs from about AED 45 at the university-student end to AED 650 and above at the premium end, with agency start rates around AED 200 for IB. Those are market figures with sources, not our prices. A quote for an essay rather than for hours should be refused.

Why is Extended Essay help sold as a block rather than a term?+

Because the work is a sequence of decisions, not a weekly skill. Each decision takes an hour or two and then releases weeks of independent writing, so the right shape is bursts with gaps. An open weekly slot booked in DP1 produces thirty sessions, most with nothing specific to do, and a total nobody agreed in advance. The signal to watch for is a session that opens with how is it going rather than with a document on screen.

How many hours of supervision does the school already provide for free?+

A limited and specified amount, already inside your fees, structured around the three reflection sessions and a concluding discussion. The exact allocation and how thinly it is spread vary a great deal between Abu Dhabi schools. Ask the coordinator two things: how many supervision hours are scheduled, and how many students the supervisor is carrying. A supervisor with two students and a free period is a different proposition from one with nine and a full timetable, and the answer should decide whether you buy anything externally.

Where do the 34 Extended Essay marks sit across criteria A to E?+

Criterion A, focus and method, carries six. Criterion B, knowledge and understanding, six. Criterion C, critical thinking, twelve, which is more than a third of the total on its own. Criterion D, presentation, four. Criterion E, engagement, assessed through the reflections, six. The distribution should reshape how a family spends: the hours most readily bought are proofreading and formatting, which sit in the four-mark criterion, while the twelve-mark criterion is under-bought because it is harder to see.

Does the subject my child chooses change what the support costs?+

Substantially, because the subject decides the data problem. An essay built on published sources needs far fewer mentoring hours than one requiring primary experimental work that may have to be redesigned. The expensive pattern is a science question needing equipment the school lacks or ethics approval it will not grant, discovered in week six. Psychology and World Studies are typically the heaviest to mentor; English A, Mathematics and a well-scoped History question are among the lightest.

What is the RPPF and how long are the three reflections?+

The reflections on planning and progress form records the student's three reflections across the project, totalling 500 words, and it feeds criterion E, which carries six marks. The reflections should be written as the work happens, capturing real decisions, setbacks and changes of direction. Students routinely reconstruct all three the week before submission, producing a bland account of a project that actually involved dead ends. Those dead ends are exactly what the criterion rewards, and they cannot be recalled convincingly months later.

What is the viva voce and does it need preparation?+

It is the concluding discussion between the student and the supervisor at the end of the project, and it feeds the supervisor's view of the student's engagement. It is a conversation about what the student did, what they would change and what they learned, not an examination of the subject content. Light preparation helps: knowing the decisions taken and being able to explain why. Scripting it does not, because a rehearsed answer about a research process reads as exactly that.

Is 4,000 words a target or a ceiling?+

A ceiling. Going over it is self-harming, since material beyond the limit is not assessed and the presentation criterion notices. Going well under it is usually worse, because the analysis that criterion C rewards never gets room to develop. The practical approach is to draft long and cut deliberately: a student who writes 4,800 words and cuts to 3,900 generally produces a stronger essay than one who stops at 3,200, provided the cutting removes description rather than argument.

Can a tutor legitimately read an Extended Essay draft?+

A mentor can discuss an in-progress draft's reasoning, ask whether a claim is supported, point out that a paragraph asserts rather than argues, and question how limitations are handled. What a mentor must not do is supply sentences, rewrite a section, provide an outline to be filled in, or comment on a draft about to be submitted as final. The dividing line is who holds the pen. The three reflections and the concluding discussion belong to the student and the school supervisor, not to an external tutor.

What should I do if an agency offers a finished Extended Essay?+

Walk away, and treat the offer as information about the provider. Selling completed assessed coursework is an academic-integrity breach that triggers the IB's malpractice procedures, and the consequence falls on your child rather than on the seller, potentially reaching the whole diploma. The same applies to an essay generated by a language model and passed off as the student's work. If a provider also offers you a bank of past Extended Essays to work from, that tells you what kind of operation you are dealing with.

How late is too late to start paying for Extended Essay help?+

By February of DP2 the hours can no longer reach most of the marks. The research question is registered, the reading is done, the method is fixed and the draft's structure already determines criterion C, which is twelve of the 34 marks. What ten hours can still change is presentation, worth four, and some of criterion E if the reflections are unwritten. Availability is also tightest then across this market. In that position, capping the essay work and spending the money on examined subjects is frequently the better call.

Is a World Studies Extended Essay more expensive to support?+

Usually, yes. The interdisciplinary route requires a global issue examined through two subjects in a way that genuinely integrates them, rather than alternating between two lenses in successive sections. That integration is the hardest thing in the project to get right and it takes more mentoring hours than a single-subject essay. It also rewards well when it works, because the field of competent World Studies essays is thinner. Decide early, with the coordinator, whether the student has the appetite for it.

Can my child do an Extended Essay in a subject they do not study?+

The school decides what it will supervise, and that is a conversation with the coordinator rather than with a tutor. In practice a student choosing a subject outside their six carries a knowledge and understanding burden that criterion B tests directly, with no classroom teaching behind it. Sometimes it works, where the interest is genuine and long-standing. More often it adds mentoring hours in DP1 that a subject the student already studies would not have needed at all.

Does a primary-research Extended Essay cost more to support in Abu Dhabi?+

Noticeably, in two ways. Experimental work has to fit the school laboratory's equipment and safety limits, and research with human participants needs ethics approval the school must grant. An approval refused in week eight is an expensive restart at the same hourly rate. Essays built on published datasets avoid both and frequently score better on criterion C, because the hours go into analysis instead of into logistics. If primary research is the point of the project, settle feasibility in the first two sessions.

What does an Extended Essay mentoring invoice look like in the UAE?+

It names the hourly figure, the session length in minutes, the number of hours proposed, the stages those hours cover, and the point at which the block ends. It should not quote a price for an essay, require a term's payment in advance, or include any charge for a tutor permit, because the MoHRE private tuition work permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 is granted free of charge for two years. On tax, ask only whether the quoted figure includes VAT; the wider treatment is a Federal Tax Authority matter.

Should we pay for proofreading of the Extended Essay?+

Rarely, and never at a specialist hourly rate. Presentation is four of the 34 marks and consists of things a student can secure from a checklist: a consistent referencing style, a contents page, numbered sections, the word count observed. Paying by the hour for it converts the smallest criterion into the largest invoice line. There is also a boundary question: editing to completion is not proofreading, and a third party rewriting sentences in a submitted essay is a malpractice exposure for the candidate.

Scope the hours before you buy them

Ask your child's coordinator how many supervision hours are scheduled and how many students the supervisor carries. Then decide what, if anything, to buy on top, and buy it in stages: two or three hours on the research question in DP1, three to five on the argument in DP2 autumn, one or two on the reflections, one at the end on checks. That block sits well below a year of weekly tutoring at any of the market rates on this page, and it puts the hours where twelve of the 34 marks actually live. Tell us the stage the project is at and we will match an IB DP Extended Essay tutor in Abu Dhabi to it, with a stated hour count and an end point.
