IB DP English B Home Tutor in Abu Dhabi

An IB DP English B home tutor in Abu Dhabi is one of the few Diploma purchases where the cheap option is sometimes the correct one, and this page explains exactly when. English B is a language-acquisition course, so part of what a student needs is practice that costs very little and part is examination technique that costs the specialist rate. Knowing which is which is worth several hundred dirhams a month. Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Two different things are being sold at the same hourly rate

English B is the only Diploma subject where a parent can reasonably pay AED 50 an hour for something useful and AED 300 an hour for something else useful, and get value from both. That is because the course has two halves that look alike from outside and need completely different providers. One half is language itself: vocabulary range, listening fluency, confidence in speaking at length. The other half is examination technique: which text type the writing task requires, how the receptive papers distribute their marks, what the oral is actually assessed on.

Most families buy the second at the first's price or the first at the second's price, and both mistakes are expensive. A student booked with a cheap generalist for exam technique gets pleasant conversation and no understanding of why their writing task scored poorly. A student booked with an IB specialist at AED 250 an hour for conversation practice is paying a premium rate for something a well-chosen reading habit and a structured speaking routine would deliver for almost nothing. The money question in this subject is a sequencing question.

The published figures are worth putting on the page, because most competitor pages in this search publish none. Tutopiya advertises online sessions from around AED 33-52 and EdFlik from AED 45-65, both at the university-student end. Unitors lists IGCSE from AED 150 an hour and IB from AED 200. TutorChase publishes AED 270. Bestimate's 2026 tutoring cost table puts in-home one-to-one at AED 180-350 and specialist IB, IGCSE and A-Level work at AED 200-450 and above, with BartyED at AED 650 at the premium end. Those are other providers' published figures as read in October 2026, and none is an IB Gram price list.

Abu Dhabi changes the calculation in a way that is specific rather than decorative. ADEK licenses and inspects the private schools in the emirate and publishes its own inspection ratings, and the schools here teach a wide spread of curricula with intakes drawn from across the world. An English B class in this city routinely contains a student who has been in English-medium education since Year 1 and is in the wrong course, next to a student who arrived last year and genuinely needs the course. Those two should not be buying the same hours, and frequently are.

IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. English B support here is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, which removes the drive from the fee: a visiting tutor quoting AED 250 for sixty minutes and driving from the island to Al Shamkha and back is being paid for a commitment of more than two hours, and that is priced in whether or not the invoice shows it. For a language course needing frequent short sessions, that difference compounds quickly.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

English B sits in a sequence of language-acquisition courses, and which one a student came from decides whether they need language teaching, exam technique, or a conversation with the coordinator about the wrong course.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

Middle Years Programme Language Acquisition

MYP language acquisition runs across phases rather than year groups, assessing listening, reading, speaking and writing against four criteria. Students who reach the upper phases arrive in English B comfortable with the skill categories and used to being assessed on all four. What they usually lack is any experience of a timed receptive paper, because MYP assessment is rarely run that way.

A minority of Abu Dhabi Diploma students come through MYP. Where they do, the English B diagnosis is usually straightforward: the language is in place and the purchase needed is a short block of timed-paper practice rather than a term of teaching.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

IGCSE English as a Second Language

Cambridge offers English as a Second Language in a form with a speaking component and one without, and the syllabus codes differ accordingly. It builds exactly the right foundations for English B: reading for gist and detail, directed writing, and a graded speaking test. Students arrive able to handle the task types and often underestimate the step up in text length and abstraction.

This is the dominant route into English B in Abu Dhabi, and it produces the most predictable first-term problem: a student who scored well at IGCSE and finds the Diploma's longer reading texts and five themes considerably more demanding than expected.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme English B

English B is a language-acquisition course at Standard or Higher Level, organised around five prescribed themes: identities, experiences, human ingenuity, social organisation and sharing the planet. Assessment covers a productive writing task, receptive papers in listening and reading, and an individual oral. Higher Level students additionally study two literary works, and the Higher Level oral is based on an extract from one of them.

English B classes in this emirate are unusually mixed, because intakes are. The practical consequence is that a single class contains students who need vocabulary work and students who need examination technique, and the teacher cannot run both courses at once inside one timetable.

CoreAges 17-19 · Across DP1 and DP2

Extended Essay and the bilingual diploma

The Extended Essay is a 4,000-word research project supervised in school, and an English B student writing it in English is doing so in their second language, which is a workload question as much as a language one. Separately, the award of a bilingual diploma depends on the combination of language courses a student takes, and the conditions should be confirmed with the Diploma coordinator.

Families in Abu Dhabi often ask whether English B blocks a bilingual diploma. The conditions are set by the IB and administered by the school, so the coordinator is the only reliable source. No external tutor can confirm a student's eligibility, and none should claim to.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

English B seldom appears alone in a request from this emirate. The subjects below are the common pairings, with what each assesses and where an English B student usually needs the help.

English B

SL and HL

A writing task from a choice of prompts and text types, a listening paper, a reading paper, and an individual oral, with two literary works added at Higher Level. Marks leak to the wrong text type, to listening practised only passively, and to orals that describe a stimulus instead of developing an argument from it.

English A: Language and Literature

SL and HL

The first-language course, with unseen non-literary analysis in Paper 1 and a comparative literary essay in Paper 2. Some English B students are capable of this course and placed below it, and some English A students would be better served here. Either way the decision is the coordinator's.

Arabic

A, B and ab initio

Arabic is mandatory in UAE private schools alongside the licensed international curriculum, with placement determined by a student's background rather than preference. A student taking both Arabic and English B is carrying two language courses, which is a real timetable load.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

An exhibition of three objects with commentaries and a prescribed-title essay. For a second-language student, TOK is often harder than any subject, because the essay rewards abstraction and precision at once. Structural teaching helps more here than vocabulary work.

Business Management

SL and HL

Papers plus a research project at Higher Level. A frequent pairing with English B in this emirate. The case-study reading in Business is dense, and a student struggling with English B reading speed will feel it in this subject too.

Economics

SL and HL

Papers with data response and essays, plus a portfolio of commentaries. Command-term precision matters enormously, and second-language students lose marks for answering a different command term rather than for not knowing the content.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

SL and HL

Two papers with technology permitted, plus an exploration. Often the lowest-friction subject for an English B student, because the language load is lightest, though the exploration write-up is an exception that catches people out.

Biology

SL and HL

Papers plus a scientific investigation. The terminology volume in Biology is larger than in any other science, which makes it the science where an English B student most often needs vocabulary support alongside content teaching.

Psychology

SL and HL

Papers across approaches and options plus an internal investigation. Studies have to be recalled in precise terms, and a second-language student's marks often turn on the accuracy of a few dozen phrases rather than on understanding.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

The three arrangements below are priced differently because they are genuinely different purchases. Mixing them up is the single most common way a family overspends on this subject.

Short, frequent language practice

Two or three short sessions a week focused on speaking at length, listening to unfamiliar accents and building vocabulary around the five themes. Frequency matters more than duration in language acquisition, and this is the part of the course that does not require an IB specialist, so it is where the budget end of the market is genuinely appropriate.

  • Thirty to forty minutes, two or three times a week
  • Speaking at length rather than answering questions
  • Listening to varied accents, not only clear ones
  • Vocabulary built around the prescribed themes

Examination technique block

A bounded set of specialist sessions on what the papers actually require: which text type the writing task demands and what its conventions are, how the receptive papers distribute marks, and what the individual oral is assessed on. This is where the specialist rate earns its money, and it is short, usually six to ten hours in total.

  • Text types taught as conventions, not as topics
  • Listening and reading practised against the clock
  • Oral structure rehearsed and then timed
  • Ends when the technique is in place, not on renewal

Higher Level literary works support

Sessions for Higher Level students on the two literary works, which are the part of the course most often covered lightly in a thin department and the basis of the Higher Level oral. The aim is not literary criticism. It is enough confident command of the works to sustain an oral extract discussion.

  • Works read with the oral in mind from the start
  • Short extracts rehearsed rather than whole-book summaries
  • Vocabulary for discussing narrative and character
  • Every word of any submitted work stays the student's own

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What English B support costs in Abu Dhabi, and when cheap is correct

  • Language fluency responds to frequency; technique responds to expertise
  • Three budget sessions a week can cost the same as two specialist hours
  • Specialist hours do not move vocabulary range, and cheap hours do not move technique
  • A visiting fee includes a drive across the emirate, itemised or not

This is the one Diploma subject where the budget end of the tutoring market is not a trap. Language acquisition responds to frequency and exposure, which a capable graduate speaker can provide perfectly well at AED 50 to AED 100 an hour. Examination technique responds to someone who has read the subject guide and knows what the papers reward, which is a different person and a different price. A family that buys both appropriately spends considerably less than a family that buys either exclusively.

The arithmetic is worth doing explicitly. Three short conversation and listening sessions a week at the budget band costs roughly the same per month as two specialist hours. The budget sessions move fluency and comprehension; the specialist hours move technique and will not move fluency. A student failing on vocabulary range needs the first. A student with good English losing marks for writing a blog post when the prompt required a formal letter needs the second. Buying four specialist hours a month for a vocabulary problem is the commonest overspend in this subject.

The table sets out the market as providers publish it, with what each band can honestly deliver for English B. Every figure is attributed and dated October 2026, and none of them is an IB Gram price list: our own model is hourly at the specialist end for technique work, with a free trial lesson before anything is booked. The column to read is the last one, because it is the one no competitor page in this search attempts.

Four components, and which ones are worth paying for

English B assesses a productive writing task, receptive skills in listening and reading, and an individual oral, with Higher Level adding two literary works that the Higher Level oral is built on. Receptive skills carry half the grade between them, which surprises families who have assumed that speaking and writing are the course.

The value of paid help differs sharply by component, and the reason is how much of each one is knowledge rather than fluency. The writing task is heavily technique-dependent, because the marks turn on choosing and executing the right text type: a formal letter, a blog entry, a set of instructions, an article, each with its own conventions. A student with good English can lose a substantial share of the available marks by writing fluently in the wrong register. That is teachable in a few hours and almost never taught at home.

Listening is the opposite. It improves with exposure, slowly, and no amount of specialist explanation accelerates it much. Reading sits between the two: speed and stamina come from reading volume, while the question-type techniques are teachable quickly. The oral is mostly technique at Standard Level, where the stimulus has to be used rather than described, and more knowledge-dependent at Higher Level, where the extract comes from a studied literary work. Confirm all weightings and formats with your child's teacher and the current subject guide; nothing here has been verified against ibo.org. The practical use of the table is to stop a family buying a comprehensive package across all four skills when two of the four are better served by a habit than by an invoice.

03

The listening paper, and why money cannot buy it quickly

  • Listening improves with exposure and resists acceleration
  • Classroom English is moderated; examination audio is not
  • Thirty minutes a day of unmoderated audio beats extra paid hours
  • A weekly timed paper with discussion afterwards is the paid part worth buying

Listening is the component families underestimate and the one that most resists a cheque. It carries a substantial share of the receptive marks, it is sat under timed conditions with recordings played a set number of times, and it is the skill that improves most slowly because it depends on accumulated hours of exposure rather than on explanation.

The specific problem for students in this emirate is accent range rather than comprehension as such. A student in an English-medium Abu Dhabi school hears English all day, mostly from teachers who are experienced at being understood by second-language students and who moderate their speech accordingly. The recordings in a listening paper do not. Natural pace, regional accents, overlapping speech and idiom all appear, and a student whose exposure has been entirely classroom-shaped meets them for the first time in an examination.

The cheap fix is also the effective one, which is unusual. Thirty minutes a day of unmoderated English audio, chosen for range rather than clarity, does more over a term than four specialist hours a month. News broadcasts, documentary audio, interview podcasts with several speakers, and anything where people talk over each other. What a paid session genuinely adds is a weekly timed paper with the answers discussed afterwards, so the student learns how the questions distribute marks and where they are losing them. One short block plus daily exposure beats a term of expensive sessions. Parents often find this suggestion disappointing, because it transfers the work from a provider back to the household, and it remains the only thing that reliably moves this component.

04

Standard or Higher Level English B: what the choice costs

Higher Level English B adds two literary works and bases the individual oral on an extract from one of them, which changes both the workload and the support bill. Families usually ask the question as though it were purely about ability. It is also about time and money, and the honest comparison is useful before DP1 rather than during it.

The case for Higher Level is real. It is a more substantial qualification, it suits a student whose English is strong enough that Standard Level would be unchallenging, and for some university routes a Higher Level language is useful. It also forces the kind of extended reading that improves everything else a second-language student does. The case against is equally real: two literary works in a second language, on top of six subjects and the core and the mandatory UAE subjects, is a genuine load, and a student who is in English B because their English is still developing is not the student for whom extra literary reading is the best use of the year.

The support cost difference is concrete rather than vague. A Standard Level student usually needs a short technique block and daily exposure. A Higher Level student often needs the same plus help with the two works, especially where a thin department has covered them lightly, which adds materially to the hours. The table sets out the comparison on the dimensions that actually decide it, and the Higher Level requirements of any university should be checked on that university's own admissions pages.

Five reasons two English B quotes differ by AED 200 an hour

Two providers can quote AED 80 and AED 280 for what a parent describes identically as English B help. Neither is necessarily wrong. They are selling different things, and the gap is explained by five variables that are worth knowing before any conversation about price.

The first is whether the tutor works from the subject guide. A tutor who can name the five prescribed themes, say what distinguishes a blog entry from an article in the writing task, and explain what the oral is assessed on is in a different market from a fluent speaker who will chat about current affairs. The second is whether the tutor marks written work to a standard rather than correcting it, which is a skill and a time cost. The third is Higher Level literary works, which narrow the pool sharply.

The remaining two are in the family's control. Format is the obvious one: a visiting tutor prices a drive across the emirate into the fee, and in a subject that wants three short sessions a week rather than one long one, that premium applies three times a week. Timing is the quieter one. Insisting on a 17:00 weekday slot narrows the pool to whoever is free in that hour, which in a language subject usually means paying more for less specialism. The table ranks all five by how much they actually move a quote, and the first three are the ones worth paying for while the last two are the ones worth giving up.

What the grade is actually for: equivalency, universities and the bilingual diploma

Parents in this emirate ask three separate questions about English B and they tend to arrive as one. Does it count for Ministry of Education equivalency. Does it satisfy a university's English requirement. Does it prevent a bilingual diploma. The answers are different and two of them are not ours to give.

Equivalency is a Ministry process administered through the emirate's attestation channel, not something a tutoring provider performs, influences or guarantees. For the British curriculum, published reporting sets out five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at no lower than grade E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one Advanced Level subject at E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level. For the American track, English proficiency is specified as IELTS 5, TOEFL iBT 61 or SAT 450 in reading and writing, with SAT Math 450 for mathematics. No IB points threshold is published here, because none has been read on the Ministry's own pages.

University English requirements are set by each university and are usually satisfied through a recognised test rather than through a school qualification, so an English B grade may or may not substitute. Check it on the admissions page of the actual course. The bilingual diploma is awarded by the IB under its own conditions and administered by the school, which makes the Diploma coordinator the only reliable source for a specific student. Anyone telling you that tutoring secures equivalency, admission or a bilingual diploma is describing something they cannot deliver.

07

If you can only afford one block, buy this one

  • First purchase: the writing-task technique block, six to ten hours
  • Second purchase: oral structure, two to four hours
  • Listening, reading speed and vocabulary are bought with time, not money
  • A weekly self-marked timed paper costs nothing and works

Plenty of families in this emirate are deciding between one tutoring block and none, across six subjects, and English B is competing with Mathematics and the sciences for the same money. The honest ranking inside this subject is clear enough to state.

Buy the writing-task technique block. Six to ten specialist hours spent on text types and their conventions changes a mark in a way nothing else in this subject does for the money, because the loss it fixes is pure knowledge: a student writing a fluent blog entry when the prompt required a formal proposal is losing marks they could keep tomorrow. Nothing else in English B has that property. Listening needs a term of exposure. Reading speed needs volume. The oral needs rehearsal. Only the writing task has a short, teachable, high-value gap.

If there is money for a second block, buy oral structure rather than more language practice, because most students describe the stimulus instead of using it to build an argument and that is a thirty-minute realisation rather than a term's work. Everything else in this subject is better bought with time than with money: thirty minutes a day of unmoderated audio, a book read for pleasure in English every few weeks, and a weekly timed paper the student marks against the answers themselves. That advice loses us sessions and it is still the right advice. A family with one block of money to spend across six subjects should also weigh whether English B is where it belongs at all, because a Mathematics or Chemistry gap is often costing more points.

08

Checking a language tutor's claims, and the permit position

  • Ask for the five themes, the text types and what the oral assesses
  • A conversation partner is a fine purchase at the budget rate, not the specialist one
  • The private tuition permit is free and issued in two working days
  • No fine schedule is published, so no figure appears on this page

English B attracts a wider range of providers than any other Diploma subject, because the barrier to entry looks low: a fluent English speaker can plausibly offer English help. That makes verification more useful here than elsewhere, and there are three checks a parent can run in a single conversation without any subject knowledge.

Ask which five themes the course is organised around. Ask what distinguishes the text types available in the writing task. Ask what the individual oral is assessed on at the level your child is taking, which differs between Standard and Higher Level. A tutor working at examination level answers all three immediately. A fluent speaker without the guide answers none of them, which does not make them useless for conversation practice at the budget rate; it makes them the wrong purchase at the specialist rate.

Then there is the permit, which is a factual matter rather than a judgement. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the MoHRE private tuition work permit, issued free of charge for two years, covering registered school teachers, public and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's private tutor licensing service lists a two-working-day completion time and no fee. Tutoring without it attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, with no published schedule of amounts, so none is quoted here. Separately, press reporting describes ADEK rules barring Abu Dhabi school staff from paid tutoring of their own enrolled students; verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document.

09

Correction, feedback and what nobody may do with a written task

  • A corrected task measures the tutor, not the student
  • Naming an error pattern is teaching; fixing the sentence is not
  • Official papers and mark schemes are linked, never reproduced
  • No grade, band or predicted-grade movement is promised here

In a second-language course the honesty line is unusually easy to cross with good intentions, because improving a sentence looks like teaching. The principle to hold is that the student's own language is what is being assessed. A corrected piece of work tells the teacher what the tutor can do, not what the student can do, and it removes the information the teacher needs in order to help.

Useful feedback in this subject is specific and leaves the words alone. Naming a recurring error pattern, three tense slips in a paragraph, is teaching. Pointing out that the register does not match the text type required is teaching. Marking a task against the criteria and explaining which band it sits in is teaching. Rewriting the paragraph so it reads better is not, and it is what a great many cheap providers do because it is quick, visible and satisfying for everyone except the student.

The same holds for any assessed component anywhere on this site. Nothing is supplied, completed or edited to a finish by a tutor, official syllabus documents and past papers are linked rather than reproduced, and no page here promises a grade, a band or a number of marks. A predicted grade is the subject teacher's professional judgement from the work in front of them, and no external provider produces or validates one. One page ranking for these searches sells completed assessments outright, and the risk of that arrangement sits entirely with the student.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

In English B the local variable is the intake of the school and the length of the evening. Both affect how many paid hours a family actually needs and when they can be scheduled.

Mussafah and Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Mainland communities feeding schools with the widest intake spread in the emirate, which means the largest English B cohorts and the most mixed ones. Requests from here are more often for genuine language support than for examination technique.

Khalifa City and Shakhbout City

Villa communities with long evening drives to the island, where the travel premium on a visiting tutor is most obvious. For a course that benefits from short, frequent sessions, the online format changes the arithmetic substantially here.

Al Reem Island

A mobile international population with students joining cohorts mid-course. Those students are the ones most likely to have been placed into English B on arrival without a proper assessment, which is worth revisiting with the coordinator.

Al Reef and Al Falah

Outer residential communities where the school run consumes the late afternoon. Sessions realistically start after 18:00, and three short sessions a week work better for language practice than one long one.

Saadiyat Island

Largely English-first intakes, so English B cohorts here are small and often contain students who could manage English A. For those families the honest first question is whether the course is right rather than how many hours to buy.

Al Bateen and Al Khalidiyah

Older island neighbourhoods near long-established schools with experienced language departments. Requests from this cluster lean towards the listening paper and the individual oral rather than towards vocabulary.

Yas Island and West Yas

Newer campuses with commuting intakes and varying provision. Higher Level English B, with its two literary works, is not offered everywhere, and families here sometimes need help with works the school covers lightly.

Al Mushrif and Al Karamah

Central and residential, close to most island schools. The constraint is the number of subjects stacked into an evening alongside the mandatory UAE subjects, which argues for short, frequent sessions rather than long weekly ones.

Longer-settled campuses where the five themes are taught thoroughly and the usual request is for timed-paper practice rather than for language teaching. Higher Level literary works are generally covered properly here.

  • The British School Al Khubairat
  • American Community School of Abu Dhabi
  • Al Bateen Academy
  • Cranleigh Abu Dhabi
  • Abu Dhabi International School

Schools in the Khalifa City, Al Raha and Yas corridor

Large year groups and newer campuses, where class sizes mean fewer individually marked writing tasks per student. Families from this corridor often arrive with several returned pieces and no clear sense of which component is losing the marks.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Say which half you think you need

Tell us whether the problem looks like language, with limited vocabulary and listening difficulty, or technique, with good English losing marks on the paper. Those are different purchases at different prices. If you are not sure, say that too; sorting it out is what the free trial lesson is for.

  2. 02

    Send one marked writing task

A single returned writing task with the teacher's marks shows more than any description. The text type, the register and the error pattern are all visible in it. One free trial lesson per student, booked without card details, and it is spent on that task rather than on introductions.

  3. 03

Buy the technique block, not a term

Where the diagnosis is technique, the purchase is six to ten specialist hours with a defined end: text types learned, receptive paper techniques practised, oral structure rehearsed. Open-ended weekly arrangements in this subject drift for a year because nothing in them can be marked finished.

  4. 04

Set up the free half of the plan

Thirty minutes a day of unmoderated English audio chosen for accent range, a book read for pleasure every few weeks, and a weekly timed paper the student marks themselves. None of this costs anything, and it does more for listening and reading than any paid hour can.

  5. 05

Re-check the course fit if nothing moves

A student losing marks on everything, with a reading load that is genuinely unmanageable, may be in a course that does not fit either upwards or downwards. That is a conversation with the Diploma coordinator in the first part of DP1. Raising it costs us a booking and is the correct advice.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Two different purchases, named and priced separately

This page says plainly that language practice and examination technique are different products at different rates, and that buying one at the other's price is the commonest overspend in the subject. Most providers in this search sell a single undifferentiated hour at one price.

Rates quoted as the market's, with the source named

Every AED figure here is attributed to the provider or rate table that published it, with the month it was read. Three of the six competitor pages researched for this market publish no price at all, and two quote in US dollars, which UAE families do not transact in.

Advice that reduces what we sell

Listening, reading speed and vocabulary are bought with daily time rather than paid hours, and this page says so. A weekly self-marked timed paper costs nothing. Recommending the free half of the plan loses sessions and is the only honest way to answer the cost question.

Component-level honesty about value

The writing task has a short, teachable, high-value gap. Listening does not. That difference decides where a limited budget should go, and it is published in a table rather than hidden behind an offer of comprehensive support across all four skills.

No claims about equivalency or admission

Ministry of Education equivalency is a Ministry process, university English requirements are set course by course, and the bilingual diploma is the IB's award administered by the school. None of them requires tutoring, and anyone saying otherwise is making a false-urgency claim about a regulatory process.

No accreditation claimed that we do not hold

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform with no office in the UAE. It holds no approval, licence or partnership from ADEK, KHDA, the Ministry of Education, the IB or any examination board, and it neither supplies nor corrects assessed written work.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How much should we expect to pay for English B help in Abu Dhabi?+

It depends which of two things you are buying. Conversation and listening practice is available at the budget end, with Tutopiya advertising from around AED 33-52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45-65, and at that price it does a real job. Examination technique sits at the specialist band: Unitors lists IB from AED 200, TutorChase publishes AED 270, and Bestimate's 2026 table puts specialist work at AED 200-450 and above. Those are published figures from October 2026. Buying technique at the budget price, or practice at the specialist price, is where families lose money.

Does IB Gram send an English B tutor to our home in Abu Dhabi?+

No. IB Gram does not run home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere else in the UAE; home visits are a service we offer only in India. Support here is one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time. In this subject the saving matters more than in most, because language work rewards three short sessions a week rather than one long one, and a visiting fee prices a drive across the emirate into every single one of them. Removing the travel buys frequency, which is the thing language acquisition actually responds to.

Which single component gives the best return if we can only buy one block?+

The writing task. Six to ten specialist hours spent on text types and their conventions changes a mark in a way nothing else in English B does for the money, because the loss being fixed is knowledge rather than skill. A student writing a fluent blog entry when the prompt required a formal proposal is throwing away marks that could be kept immediately. Listening needs a term of exposure, reading speed needs volume, and the oral needs rehearsal. Only the writing task has a short, teachable, high-value gap in it.

Why is my child's English fine in class but weak in the listening paper?+

Because classroom English is moderated and examination audio is not. Teachers in English-medium Abu Dhabi schools are practised at being understood by second-language students, so they slow down, choose plainer words and avoid idiom without thinking about it. The recordings do none of that: natural pace, regional accents, overlapping speakers and colloquial phrasing all appear. A student whose entire exposure has been classroom-shaped meets all of it for the first time under exam conditions. Thirty minutes a day of unmoderated audio over a term closes more of that gap than paid hours will.

Is it worth paying a specialist rate for conversation practice?+

Generally no, and saying so costs us work. Speaking at length improves with frequency and with a patient partner who keeps the conversation going rather than correcting every sentence, and a capable graduate speaker at AED 50 to AED 100 an hour does that perfectly well. What a specialist adds is understanding of what the oral is assessed on, which is a short, one-off intervention rather than a weekly one. The efficient pattern is frequent cheap practice plus two to four specialist hours on structure, rather than weekly specialist conversation.

What does the individual oral actually assess at each level?+

At Standard Level it is built on a visual stimulus connected to one of the five prescribed themes, and the assessment rewards using the stimulus to develop and sustain an argument rather than describing what is in it. At Higher Level it is based on an extract from one of the two literary works studied, so it depends on the works having been read properly. Confirm the current format with your child's teacher, because the details matter and nothing in this project has been verified against ibo.org. Most students describe when they should be arguing.

Should my child take English B at Higher Level?+

Only if their English is already strong enough that Standard Level would be unchallenging, and if the timetable has room. Higher Level adds two literary works in a second language on top of six subjects, the core, and the mandatory UAE subjects, and it bases the oral on an extract from one of them. The support bill roughly doubles, concentrated on the works and the oral. For a student still consolidating the language, extra literary reading is not the best use of the year, and Standard Level done well is a better outcome than Higher Level done partially.

My child was put into English B when they joined. Was that assessed properly?+

Worth asking, particularly for students who joined an Abu Dhabi school mid-course. Placement on arrival is sometimes made quickly from a short conversation, and a student with strong English can end up in a course that will not stretch them while a student who needs it can be placed in English A. The signal is where the marks go: strong scores across all four skills with no real difficulty suggests the wrong course. Moving between English A and English B is practical early in DP1 and awkward later, and the decision is the coordinator's.

Does an English B grade satisfy a university's English language requirement?+

Sometimes, and it has to be checked course by course rather than assumed. Many universities meet the requirement through a recognised test, with IELTS and TOEFL the common routes, and some accept a school qualification in place of one. The only reliable source is the admissions page of the specific course your child is applying to, since requirements vary between institutions and change between cycles. Treat any tutoring page's summary of them, including this one, as a prompt to verify rather than as an answer.

Do you offer any outcome-linked refund or grade promise?+

No, and you should be wary of anyone offering one. A grade depends on two years of a student's own work, on reading and listening done outside sessions, and on components marked by the school and by the IB, none of which a tutoring provider controls. An outcome-linked refund is either unenforceable or a sign that the published terms matter more than the teaching. What is offered here instead is a free trial lesson per student, a bounded block with a defined end, and an honest statement of what cannot be fixed.

How do I tell whether a tutor actually knows the English B course?+

Three questions in one conversation, and no subject knowledge needed on your side. Which five themes is the course organised around. What distinguishes the text types available in the writing task. What is the individual oral assessed on at the level my child is taking. Somebody working at examination level answers all three without hesitating. A fluent speaker who has not read the guide answers none, which is fine for conversation practice at the budget rate and poor value at AED 250 an hour. Ask before booking a block rather than after.

Can a tutor correct my child's writing task before it is handed in?+

They should not, and nor should a parent. In a language-acquisition course the student's own English is precisely what is being assessed, so a corrected piece tells the teacher what the tutor can write, not what the student can. It also removes the error pattern the teacher needs in order to teach. Useful feedback names the pattern instead: three tense slips in one paragraph, or a register that does not match the text type required. That leaves the words entirely the student's own and is far more useful to them.

How many sessions a week does an English B student in this emirate usually need?+

More frequent and shorter than families expect for the language half, and far fewer in total for the technique half. Two or three sessions of thirty to forty minutes a week beat one ninety-minute session for speaking and listening, because frequency is what language acquisition responds to. Technique is the opposite: six to ten hours in total, concentrated, with a defined end. The common mistake is one weekly hour forever, which is too infrequent to build fluency and too unfocused to fix technique, at the specialist price.

Does taking English B affect the bilingual diploma?+

The bilingual diploma is awarded by the IB under its own conditions and administered by your child's school, which makes the Diploma coordinator the only reliable source for a specific student. The conditions turn on the combination of language courses taken and, in some cases, on the language of other subjects, so the answer genuinely depends on the whole timetable rather than on English B alone. No external tutor can confirm eligibility and none should claim to. Ask the coordinator early, because the timetable decisions that affect it are made in DP1.

Do English B tutors in Abu Dhabi need a MoHRE permit, and does it cost anything?+

They do, and it is free. Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 introduced the MoHRE private tuition work permit, issued free of charge and valid for two years, with eligible applicants including registered school teachers, public and private sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. MoHRE's private tutor licensing service lists a two-working-day completion time and no fee. Tutoring without the permit attracts fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and because no schedule of amounts is published, none is quoted here.

What happens if no English B specialist is free at the time we want?+

You are told before anything is booked. Where no UAE-resident specialist covers the slot requested, the match comes from the wider pool of Diploma English B tutors working to Gulf Standard Time, most often from India, in the same online format and on the same hourly basis, with the tutor's location stated upfront rather than discovered afterwards. Several providers in this search route UAE families to non-UAE numbers without saying so. In this subject flexibility helps a great deal, because frequent short sessions need slots outside the weekday evening crush.

Decide which half you are buying before you compare rates

An IB DP English B home tutor in Abu Dhabi costs anywhere from AED 33 to AED 650 an hour on published figures, and the right number depends entirely on whether you need language practice or examination technique. Send one marked writing task, say which looks like the problem, and the free trial lesson will tell you which block to buy and what to do for free instead. Sessions run one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time, every word submitted stays your child's own English, and nothing on this page promises a grade.
