American Curriculum to IB Transition in Abu Dhabi

An American curriculum to IB transition in Abu Dhabi starts with a translation problem: a GPA describes a year of continuous work and a Diploma grade describes performance on terminal papers, and the two do not convert. This page sets out what evidence actually predicts readiness, what AP study transfers, and what the first marked Diploma scripts reveal. Delivered one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Abu Dhabi

Why a strong GPA tells you almost nothing about Diploma readiness

A student arriving in the Diploma from an American-curriculum school in Abu Dhabi usually brings a transcript, a GPA and, often, one or two AP results. The transcript is a record of continuous performance across a year: assignments, quizzes, participation, projects, unit tests, a final. The Diploma grade is built from terminal external papers plus one internally assessed component per subject. Those two systems reward different behaviour, and a strong GPA is therefore evidence of diligence rather than evidence of readiness.

That is not a criticism of either system, and the diligence matters. Students from American-curriculum schools typically arrive with good work habits, a tolerance for continuous deadlines, experience of presenting and collaborating, and comfort with longer written assignments. Those are real assets in a Diploma, especially for the internally assessed components and the Extended Essay, where a student who can plan and deliver a long piece of work without weekly testing has a genuine advantage over classmates who cannot.

What the transcript cannot tell you is how the student performs when a single two-hour paper carries most of the grade. In a continuous-assessment system a weak test is diluted by everything else; in the Diploma the external papers dominate, and the capacity to produce accurate work under one-off time pressure is the thing that has never been measured. This is why the first marked Diploma scripts are so informative for this particular transfer and why we ask for them early.

So the evidence to collect from week one is a record rather than an impression. Five columns per marked script: date, paper and component, raw mark against the available mark, and a dominant error category. Five categories cover almost everything: knowledge gap, method error, command-term misread, arithmetic or transcription slip, and timing. For a student from a continuous-assessment background the first scripts usually show timing and command-term misread rather than knowledge gaps, and that pattern is both predictable and quick to fix.

AP results, where they exist, are better evidence than the GPA because they are external and terminal. An AP score reflects performance on a one-off examination, so it speaks directly to the capacity the Diploma will test. It is still not a direct map onto a Higher Level course, because the assessment structures differ and the Diploma adds an internally assessed component to every subject, but it is the most useful document in the folder and should be read before anything else.

IB Gram delivers this support as one-to-one online tuition on Gulf Standard Time. We do not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run in India only. For this transition the online format carries a specific advantage: scripts are annotated on a shared screen, stored and timestamped, so week two sits beside week nine, and a specialist in the actual Diploma subject is findable rather than limited to whoever lives near Khalifa City.

At a glance

  • A GPA measures continuous diligence; Diploma grades measure terminal performance
  • AP scores are better evidence because they are external and one-off
  • American-curriculum students usually arrive strong on long projects and deadlines
  • The untested capacity is accuracy under one-off time pressure
  • Keep five columns per script: date, paper, component, mark, error category
  • First scripts typically show timing and command-term misread, both quick to fix

American high school curriculum

Credit-based progression with a grade point average built from continuous assessment: assignments, quizzes, projects, participation, unit tests and finals. Breadth is maintained across all four years rather than narrowed, and the transcript records performance over time rather than at a single endpoint. Advanced Placement courses sit on top as externally examined options.

US-curriculum schools accounted for 14 per cent of Dubai private-school students in 2024-25, within a sector of 227 schools teaching 17 curricula, and Abu Dhabi has substantial US-curriculum provision too. A transferring student is therefore usually moving within the emirate rather than from abroad, which means the previous school's records are obtainable quickly.

DPAges 16-19 · Grades 11-12

Diploma Programme

Six subjects, three at Higher Level and three at Standard Level, plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. Each subject grade combines externally marked terminal papers with one internally assessed component marked against named criteria. Subjects are graded 1 to 7 and the total runs to 45, including up to three bonus points from the TOK and Extended Essay matrix.

Abu Dhabi runs the Diploma in a limited number of schools and the available combination depends on each school's timetable blocks. For a transferring family, ask which Higher Level courses have actually run for two consecutive years, because a smaller cohort means some listed options do not run every year.

APGrades 10-12

Advanced Placement

Individual externally examined courses taken alongside the high school programme, scored on a five-point scale from a terminal examination. Because the assessment is external and one-off, an AP score speaks to the capacity the Diploma tests in a way a GPA does not, even though the course structures and the breadth requirements differ substantially.

Where a transferring student holds AP results in subjects they intend to take at Higher Level, that is the single most useful piece of evidence available. Where they hold none, the honest position is that readiness for terminal assessment is unmeasured, and a marked timed paper in the first weeks is how it gets measured.

CPAges 16-19 · Grades 11-12

Career-related Programme

At least two DP courses taken as individual certificates, graded 1 to 7 exactly as Diploma subjects are, alongside a career-related study, Personal and Professional Skills, service learning and a reflective project. A narrower framework than the full Diploma.

Worth knowing about where a transferring student wants IB structure without six terminally assessed subjects. Provision in Abu Dhabi is thinner than full Diploma provision, so availability has to be checked rather than assumed, and raising it is not a downgrade.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

For each Diploma subject, what an American-curriculum background supplies and what the marked scripts usually show first. Where AP evidence exists, it is named.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches

HL and SL

AP Calculus evidence is directly relevant and a strong signal. Without it, the untested thing is accuracy on a no-calculator paper under time, which a continuous-assessment record cannot show. The Higher Level third paper, an extended investigation, is a separate capacity again.

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation

HL and SL

AP Statistics experience maps reasonably onto the statistical content. The marks here go on justifying a model and interpreting results in language the criteria reward, which usually suits a student from a writing-heavy school system.

Chemistry

HL and SL

AP Chemistry transfers well on content. The new element is the internally assessed investigation, where the student designs and defends a method, and the Diploma's calculation chains are longer than most unit tests the student has sat.

Physics

HL and SL

AP Physics evidence is useful. What the first scripts show is marks lost in extended responses where reasoning steps are omitted, because a continuous-assessment system often credited the correct result more generously than the working.

Biology

HL and SL

Content volume is comparable to AP Biology and the demand shifts to retrieval under one-off timing. Command-term precision decides the top bands, and outline, explain, distinguish and evaluate each pay differently in Diploma marking.

Economics

HL and SL

AP Macroeconomics and Microeconomics provide real grounding. Diagram convention under Diploma marking is stricter than students expect, and the Higher Level quantitative paper is an additional component rather than more of the same.

Business Management

HL and SL

The demand is applying a framework to stimulus material rather than explaining it accurately. Students from project-based backgrounds often handle the case work well and lose marks on the compression required under exam timing.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Usually a strength. American-curriculum English builds essay-writing stamina and analytical vocabulary, and AP English Language or Literature is strong evidence. The specific gap is the unseen-text paper, which rewards a repeatable method under time.

History

HL and SL

AP World or US History provides argument-writing experience that transfers directly. The Diploma adds sourcework and, at Higher Level, a regional depth study with a further paper, so the reading volume rises.

Psychology

HL and SL

AP Psychology maps onto the content reasonably. The Diploma demands evaluation of methodology rather than recall of studies, which is where answers stall in the middle bands, and the Higher Level extensions are routinely under-revised.

Spanish B, French B and Arabic B

HL, SL and ab initio where offered

The compulsory second language. American-curriculum students have usually continued a language further than their British-curriculum peers, which often makes this the easiest part of the combination rather than the hardest.

Computer Science

HL and SL

AP Computer Science A transfers strongly on programming logic and poorly on notation, because the IB marks pseudocode conventions as conventions. At Higher Level the abstract data structures topic carries the marks.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Each of these produces a specific kind of evidence, and all of them are finite. For this transition the first one is almost always the right starting purchase.

Timed-paper baseline

Three sessions and three marked timed papers across different components, with a written error analysis. The point is to measure the one capacity a transcript never measured: accuracy under one-off time pressure. No obligation beyond the three.

  • Three dated scripts across different components
  • Measures what a GPA cannot show
  • A written error analysis naming the dominant category
  • Often shows readiness is better than the family feared

Weekly session plus one marked script

One session a week with a timed piece completed between sessions, marked and returned before the next. The same paper format held constant for three or four attempts so the record shows a trend rather than noise.

  • One dated data point per week with an error category
  • Components recorded separately, never averaged
  • Error log reviewed openly every fourth session
  • Format changed only once a movement is established

Criterion and command-term block

Four to six sessions on the two things a continuous-assessment background leaves undeveloped: writing to lettered criteria, and answering the specific command term rather than the general question. Marked practice throughout.

  • Uses the real criteria for the student's subjects
  • Command terms practised separately, with marked feedback
  • Transfers across all six Diploma subjects
  • Four to six sessions with a stated finish

Higher Level component test

One session per Higher Level subject on the specific additional component that level adds, on genuine material, marked against the real criteria. Read alongside any AP score in the same subject, which is the better of the two pieces of evidence.

  • Genuine Higher Level material, not an introductory sample
  • Read next to the AP score where one exists
  • Separates a content gap from a reasoning limit
  • Timed so a level change is still available

01

Translating the transcript: what to use and what to discard

The first task in this transition is deciding which documents are evidence. A transcript and GPA record continuous performance: assignments, quizzes, projects, participation, unit tests, finals. A Diploma grade records performance on terminal external papers plus one criterion-marked internal component. Those measure different capacities, so a 3.9 GPA and a readiness judgement are not the same statement, and treating them as the same is how a transferring student ends up in three Higher Level subjects that nobody tested.

The table below sorts the documents by predictive value. AP scores come first because they are external and one-off, which is the structure the Diploma uses. Specific unit-test performance in the subject comes next, where the school will break it out, because it isolates the testing component from the project and participation components. The overall GPA comes last, not because it is meaningless but because what it means is diligence, and diligence is a different thing from exam accuracy.

Reading the record this way usually produces one of two conclusions, and both are useful. Either the student has AP or unit-test evidence of strong terminal performance, in which case the Higher Level choices can be made with some confidence and the transition work is narrow. Or they do not, in which case readiness is genuinely unmeasured and the honest move is a timed-paper baseline in the first weeks rather than an assumption in either direction.

One further document is worth asking for and rarely offered: a long written assignment the student produced for a course grade. American-curriculum schooling generates these, and they are the best available evidence on the capacity the Extended Essay and the internally assessed components will demand. A student who can plan and deliver a sustained piece of work without weekly testing has a real advantage in the Diploma, and that advantage should be recorded alongside the gaps.

02

What the first marked Diploma scripts show, and why

  • Five error categories cover almost every Diploma script fault
  • This profile usually shows timing and command-term misread first
  • Timing is the fastest of the five faults to fix, and the cheapest
  • A changing dominant category is progress even before the total rises
  • Four weeks of the same dominant fault means change the sessions, not add to them

The record to keep from week one is five columns: date, paper and component, raw mark against the available mark, and a dominant error category. Five categories cover almost everything at Diploma level. Knowledge gap, where content was never covered. Method error, where the approach was wrong or working was not shown. Command-term misread, where the student answered a different question. Arithmetic or transcription slip. And timing, where questions were not reached at all.

For a student from a continuous-assessment background, the first scripts predictably show timing and command-term misread rather than knowledge gaps. Timing appears because the student has rarely been required to produce accurate work across two uninterrupted hours with no opportunity to revise or resubmit. Command-term misread appears because continuous assessment tends to reward a full, thoughtful treatment of a topic, while a Diploma question allocates marks to the specific thing the command term asks for.

Both are good news, in the sense that both respond quickly to marked practice. Timing is the fastest of the five faults to fix, because it is a strategy problem: question order, time checkpoints, knowing when to leave a part-answered question. Command-term misread needs a short block on the specific terms the student's subjects use, practised separately with marked feedback until the shape of each answer is automatic. Neither requires content teaching, which is the expensive kind.

Read the record for a change in the dominant category rather than a rise in the mark. The healthy sequence for this profile runs from timing and command-term misread towards method and slips, which is progress even where the total has moved modestly. The pattern to act on is the same dominant category at weeks one, three, five and seven, which means the sessions are not addressing the fault, and adding a second session to that plan doubles the cost of not addressing it. We raise that rather than waiting.

03

AP work against Higher Level, component by component

Where a transferring student holds AP results, the natural question is how much of that work counts. The answer is that it counts as evidence and as content, and not as equivalence. The Diploma's Higher Level courses are not AP courses with a different label: they run over two years rather than one, they add an internally assessed component in every subject, and in several subjects they add an external component that AP has no counterpart for.

As evidence, an AP score is the best thing in the folder, because it is external and terminal. A 4 or 5 in AP Calculus is a genuine signal about Mathematics Analysis and Approaches readiness, in a way no GPA can be. As content, AP coverage often overlaps substantially, which means a transferring student may find the first term of a Higher Level course partly familiar, and that familiarity is real and worth using rather than pretending otherwise.

What does not transfer is the additional structure. Each Higher Level adds something specific: both Mathematics routes add a third paper, an extended investigation or modelling piece; Economics adds a quantitative paper; History adds a regional depth study and a further paper; English A adds a written essay component. Those are new skills rather than more content, and a strong AP score says nothing about them, which is why a one-session marked test of the specific addition is worth doing alongside reading the score.

The other thing that does not transfer is the internally assessed component, because AP does not have one in the Diploma's sense. Every Diploma subject has work marked against named criteria with published allocations, and a transferring student will meet six of them. That is where a four to six session criterion block earns its money, and it is also where an American-curriculum student's experience of long written assignments gives them an advantage over classmates once the criterion literacy is in place.

04

The grade scale, and the conversation to have with the student

  • Diploma subjects are graded 1 to 7; a 6 is a strong grade
  • A first-term percentage will look alarming in the old currency
  • Work in raw marks against the available mark, plus an error category
  • Explain the scale before the first paper returns, not afterwards
  • Grade boundaries are the subject teacher's and the official documentation's business

This part is about the student rather than the system, and it is worth planning for. A transferring student moves from a percentage and letter-grade culture, where high nineties are routinely achievable and a 90 feels like a disappointment, to a one-to-seven scale where a 6 is a strong grade and a 7 is uncommon. The first term's marks will look alarming in the old currency and be perfectly healthy in the new one.

Families and students both misread this, and the misreading has consequences. A student who reads a first Diploma score of 62 per cent as a catastrophic fall from a 94 average may conclude they cannot do the course, and that conclusion arrives before anybody has looked at a mark scheme. Meanwhile a parent may buy a term of tutoring to fix a problem that is largely a scale-conversion artefact. Both are avoidable by explaining the scale before the first marked paper comes back rather than after.

The practical move is to work in raw marks against the available mark and in error categories, not in percentages, for the whole first term. Twenty-eight out of fifty with method error dominant is a readable, actionable statement. Fifty-six per cent is an emotionally loaded one that invites the wrong comparison. This is one of the quieter reasons the record described above is worth keeping in that exact shape.

The complementary point is that grade boundaries and what a mark converts to are matters for the subject teacher and the official documentation, not for a tutoring page. We do not publish grade-boundary tables, we do not reproduce or distribute IB subject guides, past papers or mark schemes, and we will not estimate a final grade from a first-term script. We cite official sources and link to them, which is lawful and keeps the student looking at the current version.

05

MoE equivalency: the American track, stated with its source

Families transferring within the UAE often have UAE universities in view, which makes Ministry of Education equivalency a live question rather than an abstraction. For the American track the requirements are published and specific, and worth stating precisely because a transferring family may be carrying assumptions from either system.

English proficiency on the American track is met by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT test, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT. Mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. The source documenting those requirements does not mention EmSAT, and it states no IB points threshold, which matters directly here: a student moving from the American track to the Diploma is moving from a track with published figures to one where the figure is not published in that source.

So no IB equivalency points figure appears on this page, deliberately. Check moe.gov.ae or the emirate's attestation authority directly for anything concerning the Diploma, and treat any site quoting an IB equivalency score without a government source as unreliable. For completeness, the British track requires five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic Education excluded from that count, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at no less than E or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level.

Two positions we hold. Equivalency and attestation are processes completed with the authority; IB Gram does not perform them, is not an intermediary in them and guarantees no outcome. And nothing about equivalency, university admission or school progression requires tutoring, so any page implying that it does is manufacturing urgency about a regulatory process. On university prerequisites generally, read each institution's own published requirement for the specific course, record the date, and recheck before applying.

The second language, and why this profile usually has it easier

  • US-curriculum students usually continue a world language further than peers
  • Language B at Standard Level is often the lightest part of the combination
  • Ask for placement on marked written work, not on years attended
  • Mandatory Arabic exposure is real but is not automatically a Language B base
  • Check which languages the school has run for two consecutive years

Every Diploma candidate studies a second language, and this is one of the places where an American-curriculum background helps rather than hinders. US-curriculum schooling typically keeps a world language running through the high school years rather than dropping it at fourteen, so a transferring student often arrives with three or four years of continuous Spanish, French or Arabic behind them.

That usually makes Language B at Standard Level a realistic and comparatively light part of the combination, which is a genuine planning advantage when three Higher Level subjects are competing for the week. Where the student has studied a language consistently, ask the school's language department to look at marked written work rather than at years attended, because the placement that matters is the one the evidence supports.

Arabic deserves a note in this emirate. Many students in UAE private schools have had Arabic lessons for years as part of the mandatory provision every private school must deliver, and that exposure is a different thing from studying Arabic as an examined subject. It is real and it is not automatically a Language B foundation. Where it is substantial, Arabic B may be the lightest option in the combination; where it is not, the ab initio route exists for genuine beginners if the school offers it.

The planning principle is the same as everywhere else in this transition: place the heavier demand against the lighter part of the week. A language the student has genuinely continued, taken at Standard Level alongside three Higher Levels, is manageable. Starting a language effectively from nothing, alongside three content-heavy Higher Levels, is the configuration that produces a difficult second year. Ask which languages the school has actually run for two consecutive years before planning around one.

07

Six internal assessments, and where this profile has an advantage

  • Eight substantial pieces: six internal assessments, the Extended Essay, TOK
  • Project and long-assignment experience is a real advantage for this profile
  • The gap is criterion literacy, not writing stamina
  • One four to six session block transfers to all six subjects
  • A tutor reviews the student's own draft and never writes any part of it

Every Diploma subject has an internally assessed component marked against named criteria with published mark allocations, so six subjects means six pieces of coursework, plus the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge essay and exhibition. School deadlines cluster, because schools work backwards from the same submission dates for the whole cohort. That is the Diploma's real workload and it is where a transferring American-curriculum student is better placed than most.

The reason is practice. A student who has spent four years producing projects, long written assignments and presentations to deadlines, assessed continuously, arrives with the habit of planning and delivering sustained work without a weekly test to measure progress against. That is precisely the capacity the Extended Essay demands and precisely what students from exam-focused systems most often lack. It should be named as an asset rather than overlooked.

What is missing is criterion literacy: reading a lettered criterion to see what evidence satisfies it, structuring a piece of work so each one is addressed visibly rather than incidentally, and self-marking a draft against the criteria before submission. Continuous assessment uses rubrics, which helps, but Diploma criteria are written in assessment language with published allocations and they reward specific moves. Four to six sessions on the student's real criteria covers it, and one block transfers across all six subjects.

The boundary applies here with force, since submitted work is involved. A tutor may teach the criteria and what each rewards, discuss whether a research question is answerable within the word limit, read a draft the student has written and give feedback on structure, argument and evidence, teach referencing, and mark practice work. A tutor may not write any part of the work, supply text, rewrite a paragraph into its final form, choose the research question or generate data. A breach is a malpractice finding against the student. A provider in this market sells completed Internal Assessments at AED 3,750, which is an expulsion risk with a price attached.

08

What support costs, and when the baseline is enough

Published UAE market rates as read in October 2026 put budget online tutoring at roughly AED 33-65 an hour, with Tutopiya from AED 33-52 and EdFlik from AED 45-65; qualified subject tutors online at roughly AED 150-300, with Unitors quoting IB from AED 200; and IB specialists at roughly AED 200-450 and above, with TutorChase at AED 270 and Bestimate at 200-450 for specialist exam-year work. In-home one-to-one in the UAE runs roughly AED 180-500 including travel. Those are other providers' published figures, not an IB Gram price list.

For this transition the usual purchase is small. A three-session timed-paper baseline is four and a half hours, roughly AED 675-1,350 at the qualified band. A criterion and command-term block of four to six sessions is six to nine hours, roughly AED 900-2,700. One Higher Level component test per subject adds one to three sessions. Added up, a complete transition package is nine to fifteen hours and a four-figure AED spend, with a stated end point.

Where more is needed it is usually one subject rather than the whole combination, and the record tells you which. The alternative, which is what happens when no baseline is taken and nothing is named, is a weekly session running through both Diploma years, roughly seventy hours, which at these bands is a five-figure AED commitment. That ratio is the argument for a baseline rather than a reaction, and no competitor page researched for this project publishes either number.

What separates the rate bands is who marks the timed work. At the budget end it is usually the student, against a downloaded scheme, which yields a score and no error diagnosis, and for this transition the error diagnosis is the entire product. If a quote sits at the bottom of a band, ask who marks the papers and how quickly they return, because the answer normally explains the price. For context on household budgeting, KHDA confirmed on 22 May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year; Abu Dhabi fee regulation sits with ADEK and works separately.

09

Regulators, permits and the arrangement to avoid

Private tutoring in the UAE is permitted work with a verifiable permit. The MoHRE private tutor work permit was introduced under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, and u.ae states it is granted free of charge for two years. Eligible applicants include teachers registered in government or private schools, employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students, and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. MoHRE's own service page is Issuance of a New Work Permit, Private Tutor Licensing, applied for through its smart app, website and e-services system, with no listed fee and a two-working-day completion time.

Because the permit is free, any provider citing permit costs as a reason for a higher rate is inventing one. And no fine schedule is published for tutoring without a permit, so no amount should be quoted to you: press reporting states the ministry did not specify fine amounts, and a figure circulating as a maximum could not be verified, which is why none appears here.

On the school side, private schools in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain are licensed and inspected by ADEK, which u.ae describes as supervising the licensing and accreditation of private schools in the emirate, and which is named by none of the competitor pages researched for this project. ADEK regulates schools and publishes inspection ratings; it approves no individual tutor and sets no tutoring rate. Dubai's regulator is KHDA, Sharjah's is the Sharjah Private Education Authority, Ras Al Khaimah has a Department of Knowledge, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah.

One arrangement to avoid in particular. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff have been reported as barring teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit carries a code of conduct making the same point about students affiliated with the tutor's own school. Verify the current wording against ADEK's own policy document, but do not plan around hiring your child's new Diploma teacher privately. IB Gram holds no ADEK, KHDA, MoE, IB or Cambridge approval, accreditation, licensing or partnership and claims none, and does not operate a UAE office or centre.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

US-curriculum and Diploma provision are differently distributed across the emirate, which affects both the school choice and how many marked papers a week is realistic. These are the catchments.

Abu Dhabi Island

Holds both substantial US-curriculum provision and most of the emirate's Diploma schools, so this transfer is often a short move and the previous school's records arrive quickly.

Khalifa City

Villa communities with US-curriculum options nearby and Diploma provision mostly on the island, so a transfer here typically lengthens the commute and compresses the weekday evening.

Al Raha and Al Raha Beach

Students home by 15:45, the earliest in the emirate, which is why families here can sit a weekday timed paper as well as a session without the student losing sleep.

Saadiyat Island

Small cohorts on both routes, so a Diploma class may be very small and a transferring student may be the only one in the emirate taking a given Higher Level subject.

Yas Island

Newer provision with shorter track records in some Higher Level courses, so confirm how many years a course has actually run rather than whether it appears in a prospectus.

Al Reef and Al Shamkha

Long mainland commutes mean timed papers happen at weekends rather than on weekday evenings, which is workable provided they are genuinely timed.

Al Mushrif and Al Bateen

Established central districts with a high share of US-bound and UK-bound students, so the transition conversation is usually tied to published admissions requirements on both sides.

Al Ain

Limited Diploma provision inland under the same regulator, and almost no resident Higher Level specialists, so online marking is often the only route to a script read by someone who knows the paper.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

    Collect the documents that predict

AP scores first, then unit-test marks broken out of the course grade, then a long written assignment. The overall GPA is context rather than evidence. Ask the previous school to separate testing performance from project and participation marks.

  2. 02

    Take a timed-paper baseline

Three marked timed papers across different components in the first weeks, with a written error analysis. This measures accuracy under one-off time pressure, which is the single capacity an American-curriculum transcript never recorded.

  3. 03

    Explain the grade scale first

Before the first marked paper comes back, the student needs to know that Diploma subjects run 1 to 7 and that a first-term percentage will look alarming in the old currency. We work in raw marks and error categories for the whole first term.

  4. 04

    Free trial lesson

One session with the proposed tutor, which can be the first baseline paper, marked live so you see the teaching and the marking rather than a profile. If the match is wrong we offer a different tutor instead of asking you to persist.

  5. 05

    Criterion and command-term block

Four to six sessions on writing to lettered criteria and on answering the specific command term, using the student's actual subjects, with marked practice throughout and a stated finish. One block covers all six subjects.

  6. 06

Read the record, act on the trend

A changing dominant error category means it is working. The same category four times means the sessions need changing or a different tutor, and we will say so. Near-ceiling marks with timing resolved usually means the support can stop.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

We tell you the GPA is not evidence

A transcript records continuous diligence and a Diploma grade records terminal performance. Ranking the documents by what they actually predict is the first useful thing anyone can do for a transferring family, and no researched competitor page does it.

AP scores read first

An AP result is external and one-off, which is the structure the Diploma uses, so it is the best document in the folder. We read it against the specific Higher Level addition rather than treating it as equivalence, because the structures differ.

A baseline before a plan

Three marked timed papers measure the one capacity nobody has measured. It usually shows readiness is better than the family feared, or isolates the problem to one subject, which is the difference between nine hours and seventy.

The scale explained before the shock

A student reading a first Diploma score of 62 per cent as a fall from a 94 average may conclude they cannot do the course before anyone has looked at a mark scheme. We work in raw marks and error categories for exactly that reason.

The advantage named too

Four years of projects and long assignments to deadlines is real preparation for the Extended Essay and six internal assessments, and students from exam-focused systems often lack it. We record the asset alongside the gap.

Sourced, and silent where we cannot source

The American-track equivalency figures are stated with their source. No IB points threshold appears, because the source publishes none, and no IB exam date appears, because the IB's own site blocks automated checking.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

Does a strong GPA mean my child will do well in the IB Diploma?+

It means they are diligent, which matters, and it does not predict Diploma performance. A transcript records continuous work across a year: assignments, quizzes, projects, participation and finals. A Diploma grade is built from terminal external papers plus one criterion-marked internal component per subject. The capacity the Diploma tests, producing accurate work across a single uninterrupted paper with no chance to revise or resubmit, is the one a continuous-assessment record never measured. That is why we ask for AP scores and unit-test marks rather than the GPA.

How much does an AP score tell you about Higher Level readiness?+

More than anything else in the folder, because an AP result is external and terminal, which is the structure the Diploma uses. A strong AP Calculus score is a genuine signal for Mathematics Analysis and Approaches. What it does not predict is the additional component Higher Level adds, which differs by subject: a third maths paper, a quantitative Economics paper, a History depth study, an English A essay. Those are new skills rather than more content, so read the AP score and then test the specific addition on real material.

Which documents should I ask our previous school for?+

Four, in order of usefulness. Any AP scores. Unit-test marks broken out of the overall course grade, so testing performance is isolated from projects and participation. A long written assignment the student produced for a course grade, which is the best available evidence on the capacity the Extended Essay will demand. And the course grades themselves as context. Teacher comments are useful on wellbeing and close to useless on Higher Level readiness. Most schools will provide the first three if asked specifically.

Why does my child's first Diploma percentage look so much lower than their old grades?+

Because the currencies differ. An American-curriculum student moves from a system where high nineties are routinely achievable to a one-to-seven scale where a 6 is a strong grade and a 7 is uncommon, and the raw percentages on Diploma papers are correspondingly lower. A first mark of 62 per cent may be entirely healthy. This is why we work in raw marks against the available mark plus an error category for the whole first term: a score of 28 out of 50 with method error dominant is actionable, while 56 per cent invites the wrong comparison.

What error categories should the tutor record on my child's Diploma scripts?+

Five cover almost everything. Knowledge gap, where content was never covered. Method error, where the approach was wrong or working was not shown. Command-term misread, where a different question was answered. Arithmetic or transcription slip. And timing, where questions were not reached. For a student from a continuous-assessment background the first scripts predictably show timing and command-term misread, both of which respond quickly to marked practice rather than to content teaching. The signal to watch is which category dominates and whether it changes over four weeks.

Is timing really the main problem, and how long does it take to fix?+

It is usually one of the first two, and it is the fastest of the five faults to resolve. A student who has rarely been required to produce accurate work across two uninterrupted hours has no strategy for it, which is a strategy problem rather than a knowledge one: question order, time checkpoints, knowing when to leave a part-answered question and return. Three or four full timed papers with marked feedback typically shifts it. The evidence to watch is how many questions were reached, not just how many were right, because an unreached question and a wrong answer look identical in a total.

Does AP content mean the first Diploma term will be revision?+

Partly, in the subject concerned, and that familiarity is real and worth using. Diploma Higher Level courses run over two years against an AP course's one, so content often overlaps and is then revisited in more depth. What will not be familiar is the internally assessed component, which AP has no equivalent of in the Diploma's sense, and the Higher Level additional component where the subject has one. Treat the overlap as a head start on content and plan the transition work around the two things that are genuinely new.

What is the internally assessed component and how new is it for this profile?+

Every Diploma subject has one, marked against named criteria with published mark allocations, so six subjects means six pieces of coursework plus the Extended Essay and the Theory of Knowledge components. An American-curriculum student has real experience of producing long work to deadlines, which is a genuine advantage, and usually lacks criterion literacy: reading a lettered criterion to see what evidence satisfies it, structuring to it visibly, and self-marking before submission. Four to six sessions on the student's real criteria covers it and transfers across all six subjects.

Will the compulsory second language be a problem after a US-curriculum school?+

Usually less than for other transferring profiles, which is worth knowing. US-curriculum schooling typically keeps a world language running through the high school years rather than dropping it at fourteen, so a student often arrives with three or four continuous years of Spanish, French or Arabic. That frequently makes Language B at Standard Level the lightest part of the combination. Ask the school's language department to place the student on marked written work rather than on years attended, and ask which languages have actually run for two consecutive years.

Does years of mandatory Arabic in a UAE school count towards Arabic B?+

It is genuine exposure and it is not automatically a Language B foundation, because studying Arabic as part of the provision every UAE private school must deliver is a different activity from studying it as an examined subject. Where the exposure has been substantial, Arabic B can be the lightest option in a combination. Where it has not, the ab initio route exists for genuine beginners if the school offers it. Either way the placement should be settled with the school's language department on the basis of a marked piece of work.

What does the UAE Ministry of Education require on the American track?+

English proficiency is met by a score of 5 in the IELTS academic test, 61 in the TOEFL iBT test, or 450 in the reading and writing section of the SAT. Mathematics requires at least 450 in the SAT Math test before applying. The source documenting those requirements does not mention EmSAT and states no IB points threshold, so no IB equivalency figure appears on this page. For anything concerning the Diploma, check moe.gov.ae or the emirate attestation authority directly. IB Gram does not perform equivalency or attestation and guarantees no outcome in them.

If we switch to the Diploma, does the American-track equivalency route still apply?+

That is a question for the Ministry or the emirate attestation authority rather than for a tutoring page, and the honest answer here is that the source used for this project publishes figures for the American and British tracks and no IB points threshold. Which route a student's documents are assessed under, and what each requires, should be confirmed directly with the authority before any plan depends on it. Treat any site quoting you an IB equivalency score without a government source as unreliable, and note that nothing about equivalency requires tutoring.

How many hours should we budget for the move into the Diploma?+

Nine to fifteen hours for most students, with a stated end point. A three-session timed-paper baseline is four and a half hours, roughly AED 675-1,350 at the published UAE qualified-tutor band of AED 150-300. A criterion and command-term block of four to six sessions adds six to nine hours, roughly AED 900-2,700. One Higher Level component test per subject adds a little more. Those are market bands from Unitors, TutorChase and Bestimate as read in October 2026, not an IB Gram price list, and the alternative to a baseline is often seventy hours across two years.

Can my child stay on three or four subjects instead of six?+

Not within the full Diploma, which requires six subjects plus Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay and CAS. The Career-related Programme is a narrower framework where at least two DP courses are taken as individual certificates, graded 1 to 7 exactly as Diploma subjects are, alongside a career-related study and a reflective project, and provision in Abu Dhabi is thinner than for the full Diploma so availability needs checking. A-Levels are the other alternative, with three or four subjects studied in more depth and no compulsory second language.

Should we buy tutoring in the first week or wait for the baseline?+

Take the baseline first, because without it the plan is a guess. Three marked timed papers across different components, with a written error analysis, frequently shows that readiness is better than the family feared, or isolates the problem to one subject rather than the whole combination. Either outcome changes what you buy and by how much. Starting a weekly arrangement in week one, before anyone has seen a timed script, is how a transferring family ends up funding a standing commitment for a fault that would have resolved in a month.

Can IB Gram predict my child's Diploma points from their transcript?+

No, and the attempt would be worse than useless because a transcript measures a different capacity. What we will do is read the documents in order of what they predict, take a marked timed baseline, keep a dated record with components separated and a named error category on each script, and give an honest reading of the trend including when it says the support should stop. We publish no outcome statistics, no self-assigned rating and no guaranteed grade, because a figure without its sample size, date and method is a claim rather than evidence.

Measure the untested capacity first

If you are planning an American curriculum to IB transition in Abu Dhabi, start by sorting the documents by what they predict. Ask the previous school for AP scores, unit-test marks broken out of the course grade, and one long written assignment. Then take a three-session marked timed baseline, because accuracy under one-off time pressure is the one capacity a transcript never recorded. Explain the one-to-seven scale to your child before the first paper comes back. We will keep a dated record with a named error category on every script and tell you plainly when the support should stop. A free trial lesson comes first, one-to-one over live video on Gulf Standard Time.
