Philosophy marks move when somebody marks the writing, not when the reading list grows

Philosophy is the Diploma subject where effort and attainment come apart most visibly. A student reads Descartes, follows the lesson, argues confidently at the dinner table in Al Bateen, and then scores a 4 on a mock Paper 1. Parents in Abu Dhabi tell us the same story in almost identical words: the child understands the material, so the problem must be nerves or timing. It is almost never either. The problem is that an IB Philosophy essay is marked on a short list of named qualities, and reading more philosophy does not by itself produce any of them.

That is why this page is built around evidence rather than promises. The only way to know whether Philosophy tutoring is working is to look at marked writing: the same student, the same command term, four weeks apart, with a marker's comments in the margin and a criterion-by-criterion breakdown underneath. If a tutor cannot show you that, you are buying conversation. Good conversation, often — Philosophy tutors tend to be enjoyable company — but conversation is not what the examiner sees in May.

A Philosophy session that earns its fee looks fairly dull from the outside. The student writes to time. The tutor marks what was written, against the criteria, in front of them. They identify one specific habit that cost marks — an undefended premise, a paragraph that explains a theory instead of using it, a conclusion that repeats the introduction in different words — and the student rewrites one paragraph with that habit removed. Then the next piece of writing tests whether the habit has actually gone. Over six to eight weeks that produces a visible line on a chart. Over six to eight weeks of enthusiastic discussion it does not.

Abu Dhabi adds its own constraints to that work. Philosophy is a small-cohort subject here. At several schools ADEK licenses the Diploma Philosophy class runs with a handful of students, sometimes as an option block that collides with a science, occasionally as a self-taught course supervised rather than taught. A student in that position has nobody to compare their writing against and no second opinion on a mark. One-to-one online lessons are a direct answer to that: the student gets a subject specialist who marks to the published criteria weekly, and you get a written record you can hold against the school's own predicted grade.

IB Gram is an independent tutor-matching platform. We hold no accreditation from the IB, from ADEK or from any Abu Dhabi school, and we do not claim any. What we do is match a Diploma Philosophy student in Abu Dhabi with a tutor who has taught the current syllabus, run the lessons live online, and keep the marked work where a parent can read it.

IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

Philosophy sits in Group 3 of the Diploma, but the thinking it tests is built earlier. These are the programme stages our Abu Dhabi Philosophy tutors work across, and what each one needs.

DPAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Diploma Programme Philosophy

The course that this page is about. Students study the core theme on what it is to be human, at least one optional theme, and one prescribed philosophical text. Higher Level students add a second optional theme and a paper on the practice of philosophy itself. Every component is assessed on argument rather than on coverage, which is why essay technique carries so much of the grade.

In Abu Dhabi, Diploma Philosophy is usually offered as one choice inside a crowded Group 3 block alongside Economics, Business Management, Geography and Psychology. Cohorts are small, and in some schools ADEK licenses the subject is supervised rather than timetabled as a full class. Confirm with your child's IB coordinator which optional themes and which prescribed text the school has registered for this cohort before any tutoring plan is written.

MYPAges 11-16 · Years 7-11

MYP Individuals and Societies

The MYP route into Philosophy. Students are assessed on four criteria, including investigating and critical thinking, which is the closest thing the Middle Years Programme has to a philosophy essay. A Year 11 student who scores well on criterion D here usually has the raw material for Diploma Philosophy; one who scores well only on knowledge and understanding tends to struggle in Year 12.

Several Abu Dhabi IB continuum schools in the Khalifa City and Al Raha corridor run MYP through Year 11, so students arrive in Diploma Philosophy from an MYP background rather than from IGCSE. The gap is specific: MYP students are used to structured criteria and command terms but have rarely written a 1,200-word argumentative essay to time. That single difference is worth two or three sessions in September.

TOKAges 16-19 · Years 12-13

Theory of Knowledge

Compulsory for every Diploma student and heavily adjacent to Philosophy. TOK asks how knowledge is produced and justified across areas of knowledge, and the TOK essay is marked on whether a claim is examined rather than asserted. Philosophy students often assume TOK is free marks and then approach the TOK essay in a philosophy register, which the TOK criteria do not reward.

Abu Dhabi schools timetable TOK very differently from one another: some give it a weekly lesson across both years, others compress it into blocks around the exhibition and essay deadlines. A Philosophy student can gain in both subjects at once if the tutor keeps the two registers separate, and can lose in both if nobody points out that a TOK prompt is not an invitation to summarise Kant.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Philosophy is rarely the only subject a family is worried about. These are the Diploma courses our Abu Dhabi tutors most often pair it with, and what each one actually punishes.

Philosophy

HL and SL

Assessed on four components at Higher Level and three at Standard Level. Marks are lost for describing positions rather than evaluating them, and for essays that never state which premise is being rejected.

Theory of Knowledge

Core

The 1,600-word essay plus the exhibition. The commonest failure is a well-written essay that answers a question the prescribed title did not ask, which no amount of polish recovers.

Extended Essay

Core

Four thousand words on a self-chosen question. Philosophy students often pick a title that is too large to defend; narrowing it is the single most valuable hour of supervision available.

English A: Language and Literature

HL and SL

Shares the analytical habits Philosophy needs. Students who can handle the Paper 1 guided analysis usually transfer well, provided they stop treating a philosophical text as a literary one.

Psychology

HL and SL

The Group 3 subject most often taken alongside Philosophy in Abu Dhabi. Evaluation marks hinge on using studies as evidence rather than listing them, which is the same discipline Philosophy Paper 1 rewards.

Economics

HL and SL

Common option-block partner. Diagram accuracy and evaluation carry the paper; students coming from Philosophy tend to write strong evaluation and weak diagrams.

History

HL and SL

Source work and the HL essay both reward handling counter-evidence. Philosophy students usually find the HL essay easier than the source paper, where the marks sit in close reading under time pressure.

Global Politics

HL and SL

Offered in a small number of Abu Dhabi schools. The engagement project and the HL extension both need a defensible claim, so the skill overlap with Philosophy is high.

Arabic B

HL and SL

Taken by many students in Abu Dhabi alongside a Group 3 choice. Productive skills, not comprehension, decide the grade, and the written tasks reward exactly the structural discipline Philosophy demands.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three ways Abu Dhabi families use Diploma Philosophy support. All three are delivered live online, one-to-one, with the same marking discipline behind them.

Weekly marked-essay cycle

The default, and the one that produces evidence. One session a week across a term: the student writes under timed conditions between sessions, the tutor marks against the criteria before the lesson, and the lesson is spent on the gap the marking exposed. Suits a student sitting at a 4 or 5 who needs technique rather than content.

  • One timed piece written between every pair of sessions
  • Criterion-level marking returned in writing, not verbally
  • One named habit targeted per fortnight
  • A running record of marks you can read at any point

Internal assessment supervision

A short block of sessions around the philosophical analysis of a non-philosophical stimulus. The tutor works on choice of stimulus, the philosophical issue being extracted, and the structure of the analysis. The student writes every word themselves; the tutor reads drafts and gives feedback, which is what IB rules permit.

  • Stimulus selection tested against the assessment criteria
  • Feedback on the student's own draft, in writing
  • Word allocation planned against the 2,000-word ceiling
  • A clear record of what the tutor did and did not touch

Pre-session intensive

A compressed block in the eight to ten weeks before the May examinations, aimed squarely at Paper 1 and Paper 2 technique. Two sessions a week, each built on a timed script from the previous one. This is for students whose content knowledge is sound and whose exam writing is not.

  • Two timed scripts per week, both marked
  • Paper 2 practice against the school's registered prescribed text
  • Higher Level Paper 3 drilled separately on unseen material
  • Weekend slots available when school revision takes the evenings

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Abu Dhabi

01

What a marked Philosophy script actually tells you

A marked Philosophy essay is the most useful document a parent in Abu Dhabi can hold. Not the mark at the top: the annotations. They tell you precisely where the essay stopped doing philosophy and started doing summary, and that point is almost always identifiable to the sentence. Once you can see it, you can see whether it is still happening six weeks later.

Diploma Philosophy essays are assessed on a short set of named qualities. Expressed plainly, the examiner is asking: does this student understand the issue, have they used philosophical argument to address it, have they considered a serious objection, and is the whole thing organised so the argument is followed rather than reconstructed by a sympathetic reader. A student can know a great deal and satisfy only the first of those. That is the shape of nearly every stuck Philosophy grade we see in Abu Dhabi.

So the first session with a new student is not a syllabus overview. The tutor asks for two pieces of recent writing — a mock answer and a class essay are ideal — and marks them cold against the criteria. What comes back is a diagnosis in writing: which criterion is already secure, which is costing the grade, and what the single highest-value change is. Parents regularly tell us this is the first time anyone has shown them why a confident, well-read child is sitting on a 4.

The second thing a marked script shows is whether the student is writing to time. Philosophy papers are long and the pressure is real; an essay written over two unhurried evenings proves nothing about performance in a hall. Every piece of evidence in this process is produced under exam conditions for that reason, and the first timed script is usually a full band below the coursework the school has seen.

02

How the Philosophy grade is assembled, component by component

Before any plan is made, it is worth knowing where the marks physically sit. Under the current subject guide, Standard Level Philosophy is assessed on three components and Higher Level on four, and the weightings are not evenly spread. A Standard Level student who ignores the internal assessment has written off a quarter of the grade; a Higher Level student who treats the unseen paper as a bonus has written off a fifth.

The table below sets out the structure as published in the subject guide. Durations and weightings should be confirmed with your child's IB coordinator, because the IB revises subject guides on a cycle and a school may be teaching a different cohort year to the one you are reading about. That caution matters more in Philosophy than in most subjects, because the prescribed text list changes and a tutor working from the wrong text is worse than no tutor at all.

The practical consequence of the weighting is that tutoring should be sequenced, not spread. For a Year 12 student, the internal assessment and the core theme are where early work pays, because both are still open. For a Year 13 student in January, the only rational focus is the examined papers, since the internal assessment has usually been submitted internally by then and no amount of tutoring changes a mark already banked.

One more consequence, specific to Higher Level: the fourth component is the one with no obvious revision material attached. It asks the student to engage with an unseen passage about the practice of philosophy itself, and it rewards a habit rather than a body of content. Habits take weeks of short, repeated practice, which is exactly the kind of work that drops off a revision timetable built around content.

Six ways an Abu Dhabi Philosophy student loses marks, in the order a marker meets them

  • Undefended premise: the claim a philosopher would attack first goes unexamined
  • Explanatory paragraph: the theory is described accurately and never used
  • Missing objection: no serious challenge is met, so evaluation marks are capped
  • Decorative philosopher: a name appears with no argument attached to it
  • Scope: the opening question is too large to defend in the time available
  • Restating conclusion: the final paragraph repeats the introduction instead of resolving it

These are drawn from marked scripts, not from a list of general study tips. They appear in roughly this order as you read down a page, and each one is fixable inside two or three sessions once it has been named.

The first is the undefended premise. The essay asserts something that a philosopher would immediately challenge and moves on. The second is the explanatory paragraph: a clear, accurate account of a theory that is never applied to the question. The third is the missing objection. A student who presents one position well but never meets a serious challenge to it has capped the evaluation marks, no matter how elegant the prose. The fourth is the decorative philosopher, named in a subordinate clause with no argument attached.

The fifth is scope. Abu Dhabi students, many of whom are strong English writers, tend to open with a question large enough to need a book. The essay then has to retreat, and the retreat eats the time that should have gone on evaluation. The sixth is the closing paragraph that restates the opening in new words rather than resolving the argument the body has set up. It is the most common single reason a good essay reads as a 5 rather than a 6.

A tutor who marks weekly can tell you which of those six is live this month. That is a different conversation from the one most families have with us at the start, which usually begins with the belief that the student needs to read more. Occasionally they do. Far more often the reading is sufficient and the writing is doing something the criteria do not reward.

04

A four-week marked-work cycle you can audit yourself

This is the mechanism behind every claim on this page. It is deliberately boring and deliberately legible: a parent who has never read a philosophical text should be able to open the folder and see whether anything is improving.

Each cycle runs on one timed piece of writing per week plus one lesson. The writing is done at home under exam conditions and sent before the lesson. The tutor marks it against the criteria, in writing, with a mark for each and a one-line reason. The lesson then works on one thing — not six — and the student rewrites a single paragraph applying it. The next week's piece is chosen to test whether the fix survived without being prompted.

By the end of four weeks you have four marked scripts on the same criteria, written to the same time limit, with one named target per fortnight. If the criterion scores have not moved, the plan is wrong and should be changed; that is a conversation worth having in week five rather than in April. If they have moved, you know which part of the work caused it. This is also the record that lets you sanity-check a school predicted grade, which in a cohort of four students is based on a very small sample.

Families often ask how long a change takes to appear. In our experience with Diploma humanities students, structural habits such as the missing objection move within two or three marked pieces, because the fix is a rule the student can apply. Scope and evaluation depth take longer, usually six to eight weeks, because they require judgement rather than compliance. Anyone who tells you otherwise has not marked much Philosophy.

A FOUR-WEEK PHILOSOPHY MARKING CYCLE - WHAT THE PARENT SEES
WeekWhat the student submitsWhat the tutor returnsWhat you can check
1A timed Paper 1 optional-theme essay, written coldCriterion-level marks, annotations, one named targetA baseline mark and a written diagnosis, not a verbal impression
2A rewritten paragraph plus a second timed essay on a different themeWhether the named target was applied without promptingDid the same error recur when nobody reminded them?
3A timed Paper 2 essay on the school's registered prescribed textMarks against the same criteria, plus text-specific feedbackWhether the gain transfers to a different paper
4A full timed Paper 1 under exam conditionsA comparison against week one, criterion by criterionMovement on each criterion, and the next target in writing
05

Small cohorts, option blocks and the supervised Philosophy student

Philosophy in Abu Dhabi is a minority subject, and that shapes everything about how tutoring should be used. In a school where Economics runs three Diploma classes, Philosophy may run one group of five, taught by a teacher whose main subject is something else, inside an option block that forces awkward trade-offs against a science or a second language.

Three consequences follow. The first is calibration: with five students in a cohort, the school's internal mark distribution carries almost no information. A predicted 5 might mean the student is the second strongest of five, which tells you nothing about where they would sit against a full examination cohort. An external marker working to the published criteria is the only practical cross-check available.

The second is coverage. Where a subject is supervised rather than taught — a legitimate arrangement that several schools use for very small option choices — the student is carrying the syllabus themselves with a teacher checking in. Those students need the tutor to behave like a teacher, not a polisher: sequencing the optional theme, setting the reading, and testing it, as well as marking the essays.

The third is the timetable. A single Philosophy group often sits in the least convenient block in the week, and the student may have a long gap between lessons. Online sessions are scheduled around that rather than against it, and because the tutor is not crossing Abu Dhabi at five in the afternoon, a 7.30pm Tuesday slot costs nothing extra to arrange. That is the practical reason families here end up choosing online delivery even when they started out searching for someone local.

06

What Diploma Philosophy support costs in the Abu Dhabi market

Published rates for private tuition in the UAE vary by a factor of ten, and almost nobody ranking for these searches prints a figure at all. The bands below are market rates collected from providers' own published prices and from a Dubai rate survey, not an IB Gram price list. They are here so you can tell whether a quote you have been given is normal.

Three things reliably move the number for Philosophy specifically. Scarcity is the first: there are far fewer Diploma Philosophy specialists in the Gulf than Maths or Chemistry tutors, so the subject sits at the upper end of the band for its level. Marking is the second, and it is the one parents forget to ask about. An hour of lesson time plus a properly marked essay is roughly ninety minutes of tutor work, and a quote that includes marking is not comparable with one that does not. The third is the format: an in-home visit anywhere in the UAE carries the tutor's travel inside the rate, which is why those bands sit higher for the same teaching.

Two figures are worth holding alongside the rate. The Knowledge and Human Development Authority confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai would not rise for the 2026-27 academic year, under an economic incentives package; Abu Dhabi fee regulation sits with ADEK separately. Against a school fee measured in tens of thousands of dirhams, a weekly subject session is a small marginal cost — but it is a recurring one, and it should be bought against a target, not indefinitely.

For IB Gram's own arrangements, the honest answer is that it depends on the tutor's experience and the number of sessions, and the only way to find out whether the match works is the free trial lesson, which happens before any payment. We will not publish a tariff on a page like this and then quote something different on the phone, which is a pattern the competitor research found repeatedly.

The Diploma Philosophy year counted backwards from the May session

Abu Dhabi schools sit the May examination session. Nobody ranking for these searches publishes a calendar, which is odd, because the calendar is what decides whether tutoring arrives in time to be useful. The table below counts backwards from the examinations rather than forwards from today.

Two cautions about dates. Exact IB examination and results dates are published by the International Baccalaureate and set per session; we do not restate them here, because an incorrect date on a page like this is worse than no date, and your child's IB coordinator holds the authoritative version for their cohort. Internal deadlines — the ones that actually bite — are set by the school, not the IB, and they usually fall weeks before the IB's own upload deadlines so that teachers have marking time.

The pattern worth noticing is how early the internal assessment closes. For most Abu Dhabi cohorts the Philosophy analysis is finished during Year 13's first term, which means the window for useful support on a quarter of the Standard Level grade opens in Year 12 and closes long before anyone starts revising. Families who come to us in February asking for internal assessment help are usually too late for that component and should be spending the money on Paper 1 technique instead.

The second pattern is the Ramadan overlap. Ramadan moves roughly eleven days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar, so for the next several cycles it falls in the revision term for the May session. Abu Dhabi school hours shorten, evenings restructure around Iftar, and a 5pm session stops being viable. Sessions move to post-Iftar slots, typically from 8.30pm, and the students who plan that in advance lose nothing; the ones who improvise lose three or four weeks of the most valuable revision time in the course.

Where a tutor must stop: the internal assessment, ADEK ethics and the MoHRE permit

The Philosophy internal assessment is a 2,000-word philosophical analysis of a non-philosophical stimulus, and it must be the student's own work. A tutor may teach the skill, discuss the stimulus, explain what the criteria reward, and give written feedback on a draft the student has produced. A tutor may not supply the analysis, rewrite passages into their own prose, or hand over a structure with the content filled in. The line is not subtle, and the consequence of crossing it falls on the student: an academic-honesty finding can cost the whole Diploma.

This matters commercially as well as ethically, because the UAE search results for IB coursework help include services that sell finished internal assessments outright. Our competitor research found one offering completed Internal Assessments at a fixed price. Any family weighing that option should understand what is being sold: a malpractice trigger with a receipt. The honest version of coursework support is slower, and it is the only version that is safe.

On permits, the position is specific and checkable. Private tutoring in the UAE is regulated: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, it is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so anyone quoting you an amount is guessing.

In Abu Dhabi there is an additional rule parents should know about. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff bar teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the permit's code of conduct points the same way. So the apparently obvious move — paying your child's own Philosophy teacher for weekend sessions — is the one arrangement to avoid. That reporting should be checked against the current ADEK policy document, but the direction of travel is clear and it is a sensible question to ask any local tutor before you book.

Where we tutor

Areas we cover across Abu Dhabi

Lessons are delivered online, so the practical question in Abu Dhabi is not distance but timing. These are the communities we most often schedule Diploma Philosophy sessions for, and what shapes the slot.

Saadiyat Island

Families here often finish the school day late because of co-curricular commitments on campus. A 7pm or 7.30pm Philosophy slot usually works better than an immediate after-school session, and it leaves the student fresher for timed writing.

Al Reem Island

Apartment living and short commutes mean students are home early, so a 5pm start is realistic. We tend to use the earlier slot for timed essay writing and keep marking discussion for a shorter midweek follow-up.

Khalifa City

The eastern corridor school run is the constraint, not the lesson. Students arriving home after 4.30pm do better with a 6.30pm session, and many Philosophy students here are in small cohorts where weekly marked writing is the only external feedback they get.

Al Raha Beach and Al Raha Gardens

A dense cluster of Diploma students in a small area, several in schools where Philosophy runs as a supervised option. Sibling scheduling is common: two back-to-back slots in one evening rather than two separate evenings.

Al Bateen and the Corniche

Older, island-side communities with a long-established Diploma population. Students here frequently take Philosophy alongside English A Literature, so sessions often cover transfer of close-reading technique to Paper 2.

Mohammed Bin Zayed City

Larger mainland catchment with longer bus routes. Weekend morning sessions are more productive than weekday evenings for students on a 45-minute bus home, especially for the two-hour timed Paper 1 practice.

Yas Island

A newer Diploma population in a small number of schools. Philosophy here is typically a single-figure cohort, which makes an external marker the only way to calibrate whether a predicted grade is fair.

School ecosystem

The island: Al Bateen, Bloom Gardens and Saadiyat

The longest-established Diploma provision in the emirate sits on the island. Group 3 blocks here tend to be wide, so Philosophy competes with Economics and Psychology for the same students, and a cohort of four or five is normal.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Tell us what the marked work shows

Send the last two pieces of written Philosophy and the current predicted grade. A mock paper is more useful than a report card, because it shows performance under time. If you have a school comment about evaluation or structure, include it; that is usually the criterion in question.

  2. 02

Free trial lesson with a Philosophy specialist

One live online session before any payment. The tutor marks a piece of the student's writing against the criteria during or before the lesson, so you are judging a marker rather than a personality. If the fit is wrong, say so and we match again.

  3. 03

Agree the target and the slot

One named target for the first fortnight, a weekly session in Gulf Standard Time that survives the Abu Dhabi school run, and an agreement about what the student will write between sessions. Timed writing is the input the whole process depends on.

  4. 04

Review the evidence in week four

Four marked scripts on the same criteria, written to the same time limit. Criterion scores either moved or they did not. If they did not, we change the plan or the tutor; continuing unchanged is how families spend a year and gain nothing.

  5. 05

    Re-sequence for the examination run-in

From roughly ten weeks out the plan shifts to two timed scripts a week, Paper 2 against the school's registered text, and Higher Level Paper 3 drilled separately. Ramadan timing is agreed in advance rather than improvised.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Written evidence, not reassurance

Every session produces marked work against the published criteria, kept where you can read it. The claim that tutoring is working is checkable by somebody who has never read a philosophical text, which is the only standard worth having.

A specialist, not the nearest available tutor

Diploma Philosophy is a small subject with few specialists in the Gulf. Online matching means the constraint is who teaches the course well, not who can reach Khalifa City by 5pm on a Tuesday.

Honest about what we do not do

Lessons are online, one-to-one. IB Gram does not offer home visits in Abu Dhabi or anywhere in the UAE; home visits are a service we run only in India. We hold no regulator or board accreditation and claim none.

Coursework support that keeps the student safe

The internal assessment is taught and reviewed, never produced for the student. The boundary is written down and the record of what the tutor touched is kept, which protects the student if anyone ever asks.

Scheduling that fits an Abu Dhabi week

Gulf Standard Time slots after the school run, weekend mornings for long timed papers, and post-Iftar sessions during Ramadan agreed before the month starts rather than after lessons start collapsing.

A free trial before any payment

One full lesson with the matched tutor, with a piece of the student's own writing marked, before money changes hands. If the fit is wrong you say so and we match again at no cost.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Abu Dhabi: your questions answered

How will I actually see whether my son's Philosophy essays are improving?+

By reading marked scripts side by side. Each week he writes one timed piece and the tutor returns criterion-level marks, annotations and one named target in writing. After four weeks you have four comparable scripts on the same criteria and the same time limit, so movement is visible without any knowledge of philosophy on your part. Structural targets such as adding a serious objection usually show inside two or three pieces. Depth of evaluation takes six to eight weeks, because it needs judgement rather than a rule. If nothing has moved by week five, that is the signal to change the plan or the tutor rather than wait.

My daughter writes beautifully and still gets 5s in Diploma Philosophy. What is going on?+

Almost always that she is explaining rather than arguing. Fluent writers produce accurate accounts of a theory, which satisfies understanding but leaves the evaluation criterion largely unaddressed. The marked scripts we see follow a pattern: a strong introduction, two well-written explanatory paragraphs, a thin paragraph that gestures at a criticism, and a conclusion that restates the opening. The fix is mechanical before it is intellectual. She needs to identify the premise an opponent would attack, state it, meet it, and say why her position survives. That is a rule she can apply to the next essay, and it is usually worth a band.

Philosophy runs as a supervised option at my child's Abu Dhabi school. Can tutoring replace the teaching?+

It can carry most of it, provided everyone is clear that is what has been bought. A supervised student is holding the syllabus themselves, so the tutor has to sequence the optional theme, set and test reading, and teach the prescribed text, as well as mark essays. That is more hours than a top-up arrangement. What tutoring cannot replace is the school's role in registration, internal deadlines and submitting the internal assessment, all of which stay with the school. Ask the IB coordinator which optional themes and which prescribed text the school has registered before the first session, because a tutor working from the wrong text wastes the term.

How many students are usually in a Diploma Philosophy class in Abu Dhabi?+

Small numbers are normal. Philosophy competes inside a crowded Group 3 block against Economics, Business Management, Psychology and Geography, so a cohort of four or five students is common and single figures are the rule rather than the exception. That has a practical consequence for you: with five students, the school's internal ranking carries very little information, and a predicted grade may mean little more than second of five. An external marker working to the published criteria gives you an independent reading, which is the main reason families in small cohorts come to us in the first place.

What can a Philosophy tutor legitimately do on the internal assessment?+

Teach the skill, discuss candidate stimuli, explain what each criterion rewards, and give written feedback on a draft the student has produced. The tutor must not supply the analysis, rewrite passages in their own words, or provide a filled-in structure. The student must write their own analysis, every word of it, inside the 2,000-word ceiling. We keep a record of what the tutor saw and what they said, which protects the student if the school ever asks how the work was supported. Services that sell finished coursework exist in this market; what they are selling is an academic-honesty finding with an invoice attached.

Is Higher Level Philosophy worth the extra paper for an Abu Dhabi student?+

It depends on whether the student enjoys method rather than content. The Higher Level extension adds a paper on the practice of philosophy, sat against an unseen passage, and it cannot be revised by memorising material. Students who like being given a text and asked to do something with it tend to score well on it; students who rely on prepared content find it the hardest thing in the Diploma. Look at how the student handles an unseen text in English A before deciding. If the school offers both routes, that comparison is a better guide than general enthusiasm for the subject.

We start revision in Ramadan. How do Philosophy sessions work that month?+

They move, and the move is planned in advance. Abu Dhabi school hours shorten during Ramadan and evenings restructure around Iftar, so a 5pm lesson stops working. We normally shift to post-Iftar slots from around 8.30pm, or to weekend mornings for the long timed papers that need two uninterrupted hours. Because Ramadan now falls inside the revision term for the May session, this affects the most valuable weeks in the course. Families who agree the new timing before the month starts keep their momentum; the ones who improvise typically lose three or four weeks.

Does an online Philosophy tutor still need the MoHRE private tuition permit?+

If they are tutoring from inside the UAE, yes. Private tutoring here is regulated by permit under Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, the permit is granted free of charge for two years, and eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private-sector employees, unemployed residents, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Individuals tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule has been published, so treat any quoted amount with scepticism. It is a fair question to put to any tutor, and the MoHRE service page sets out the application route.

Can we pay my child's own Philosophy teacher for weekend sessions instead?+

In Abu Dhabi that is the one arrangement to avoid. ADEK's professional-ethics rules for private and charter school staff bar teachers from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the private tuition permit's code of conduct points the same way. The reporting on this should be verified against the current ADEK policy document, but the direction is clear enough that no family should want the exposure. It is also pedagogically weaker than it sounds: the value of an outside marker is precisely that they are not the person who set the predicted grade.

What should a first Philosophy session with a new tutor actually contain?+

A diagnosis, in writing. Send two recent pieces of writing in advance, ideally including a timed mock answer, and the tutor should mark them cold against the assessment criteria before the lesson. The session is then spent explaining which criterion is secure, which is costing the grade, and what the single highest-value change is. What a first session should not be is a tour of the syllabus. You already know what the course contains; what you are paying to find out is why a capable student is sitting a band below where the family expected.

Does Diploma Philosophy count towards UAE Ministry of Education equivalency?+

Equivalency is assessed on the certificate, not on one subject, and the published rules differ by curriculum track. For the British route the Ministry requires five accredited subjects at GCSE or IGCSE at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels. No sourced IB points threshold is published that we can verify, so do not rely on any figure you see quoted, including ours. Check the current requirement on the Ministry's own channel or with the emirate attestation authority. IB Gram does not perform or guarantee equivalency; we describe it and point you to the official route.

My son is in Year 13 and has already submitted his Philosophy analysis. Is tutoring still worth it?+

Yes, but the target changes. A submitted internal assessment is a banked mark and no tutoring moves it, so the money should go entirely to the examined papers. At Standard Level that means Paper 1 technique and the prescribed text; at Higher Level it means those plus the unseen paper, which needs short repeated practice rather than content revision. The sequence we use from January is two timed scripts a week, both marked, with one named target per fortnight. Families who keep spending on coursework help at that point are buying something that cannot change their result.

Which prescribed text will the Paper 2 essay be on, and does it change?+

The school chooses from the IB's prescribed list and registers it for the cohort, and the list is revised when the subject guide is. That is why the first thing a tutor should ask is which text your child's school has registered, rather than assuming the most commonly taught one. Essays on the text's reputation score badly; essays that engage with its actual argument score well, and that distinction only comes from working on the correct text for months. Ask the IB coordinator in writing, and keep the answer, because it determines which tutor is the right match.

We live on Saadiyat Island and wanted somebody local. Why is online better here?+

Because the binding constraint for Philosophy is not distance, it is scarcity. There are very few Diploma Philosophy specialists in the Gulf, and almost none who will also mark weekly to criteria. Searching within a 20-minute drive of Saadiyat narrows that pool to whoever happens to live nearby, usually a generalist humanities tutor. Online matching removes the geography and keeps the specialism. It also removes travel from the price and from the calendar, which is what makes a 7.30pm Tuesday slot possible at all. IB Gram does not send tutors to UAE homes; lessons run live over video, one-to-one.

How long before the May session is it too late to start Philosophy support?+

For the examined papers, eight to ten weeks is still enough to change technique, because the habits that cost marks are rules a student can learn to apply. Six weeks can still fix one or two specific failure modes, such as the missing objection or the restating conclusion. Under four weeks, the realistic goal is paper management rather than improvement: timing, question choice and getting the argument down in the order the criteria reward. For the internal assessment, the window closed in Year 13's first term, so any late spending should go to the papers instead.

Start with one marked essay

If your child is a confident reader sitting on a 4 or a 5 in Diploma Philosophy, the fastest way to find out why is to have somebody mark two pieces of their writing against the published criteria and explain what they see. That is what the free trial lesson is for, and it happens before any payment. Send a timed mock answer and a class essay, tell us the predicted grade and the school's registered prescribed text, and we will match an Abu Dhabi student with a Philosophy specialist for live one-to-one online lessons in Gulf Standard Time. Four weeks later you will have four marked scripts and an answer you can read for yourself.
