IGCSE Home Tutor in Al Zahia: The Papers, the Traps and the Practice

Hiring an IGCSE home tutor in Al Zahia is usually treated as a question about people. It is really a question about papers. Your child sits a specific combination of components, loses marks in a small number of recurring places, and recovers them through a particular kind of practice. This page sets out that detail subject by subject, and teaches Al Zahia students one-to-one over live video.

  • Component structure set out per subject, Core and Extended
  • The recurring mark-scheme traps named, not generalised
  • Past papers worked from official board sources, with the source cited

IB & IGCSE in Al Zahia

The paper, not the subject

A school report says your child is a grade C in Physics. That sentence contains almost no information you can act on. The useful version is narrower: on Cambridge 0625 at Extended tier, they are losing marks on Paper 4 extended-response items about potential dividers and electromagnetic induction, and on the alternative-to-practical paper they are describing results instead of explaining anomalies. That version tells you what to buy.

Getting to that version is what this page is for. It sets out, subject by subject, which components your child actually sits, where marks are lost in each, and what kind of practice recovers them — because those three things are what a competent tutor should be able to state in the first conversation, and most cannot.

There are two reasons families in Al Zahia end up with vague tutoring. The first is that the report card never names a component. The second is that most tutoring enquiries are answered with reassurance rather than detail, and reassurance is easier to produce than a diagnosis. A page that gives you the detail lets you tell the difference.

The structure to hold onto is this. Cambridge science subjects give Extended candidates a multiple-choice paper and a theory paper, plus either a timetabled practical or an alternative-to-practical written paper depending on what the centre runs. Cambridge Mathematics gives Extended candidates a short-answer paper and a structured paper, with the structured one carrying the long multi-mark questions where method marks live. Pearson's International GCSE equivalents concentrate most routes into written papers, usually two of equal weight, which changes the pacing risk entirely.

Al Zahia itself is villa and townhouse housing immediately west of Muwaileh, with City Centre Al Zahia alongside and established routes into the main campuses. Those routes feed the Maliha Road corridor at the hour several large schools release, so a household here is typically settled around half past five, later with two school runs. That sets the session window and nothing else about the teaching.

A parent does not need the subject to use any of this. The published mark scheme and the paper sit side by side, and reading one against the other for twenty minutes produces a list of specific losses. That list is what turns a tutoring enquiry from a request for reassurance into a brief.

On delivery: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. In-home tutoring is offered only in India, and there is no UAE office or centre. Al Zahia students are taught one-to-one over live video, in Gulf Standard Time, with the past paper and the published mark scheme open on a shared screen — which is, for this kind of work, the format that makes most sense anyway.

What follows is the subject detail: Mathematics, the three sciences, English, and the traps that appear in every one of them, followed by the practice method that actually changes a mark.

Cambridge IGCSE

Four-digit codes and tiered entry. Core candidates sit one set of components with the grade capped at C; Extended candidates sit a different set reaching A*. In the sciences, Extended candidates take a multiple-choice paper and a theory paper, plus either a timetabled practical test or an alternative-to-practical written paper. In Mathematics 0580, Extended candidates take a short-answer paper and a structured paper, and the structured one is where multi-mark method is credited.

Cambridge runs IGCSE in June and November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint in March, May and October. The February/March series is offered to India only and is not available to Sharjah candidates. Cambridge allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones, says it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for your zone, and cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one.

Codes beginning with 4. Mathematics Specification A, 4MA1, is tiered Foundation and Higher with two papers of equal weight, so a pacing failure on the first paper cannot be made up later. The sciences — 4PH1, 4CH1, 4BI1 — concentrate most routes into written papers, with practical skills examined within them rather than in a separate practical test. Grades are reported 9 to 1 rather than A* to G.

Pearson runs International GCSE in May/June and November each year. The November 2026 final timetable ran from late October to 19 November 2026, with results reaching students in January — November 2025 results arrived on 22 January 2026. June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students the next day. Provisional timetables are published ahead of each series, so plan from the live official PDF.

Additional Mathematics 0606

Taken alongside 0580 by students heading for A Level Mathematics, and Extended-tier only. It introduces differentiation, integration, logarithms, the factor theorem and trigonometric identities that 0580 never reaches. The standard failure is treating it as harder 0580 revision, when it is a separate syllabus with its own command terms and its own question shapes, and it rewards deliberate drilling of calculus technique.

The tutor pool for 0606 is thin across the whole emirate, which matters more than it would for a common subject: a student entered for it in a school that offers it to a small set may have limited support at school as well. If the school does not offer it at all, the private-candidate route through a centre that accepts external entries exists, and the exams officer can explain what it involves.

AS/AAges 16–18 · Years 12–13

AS and A Level progression

The destination that explains why specific IGCSE topics matter more than others. A Level Mathematics assumes algebraic fluency that 0580 only samples, and A Level sciences assume the quantitative work IGCSE treats lightly. Year 11 tutoring aimed at progression weights the topics AS builds on directly — algebraic manipulation, functions, moles and energetics, electricity — rather than spreading evenly across the syllabus.

Ministry of Education equivalency on the British track asks for five accredited GCSE or IGCSE subjects at no less than E or grade 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from the five, plus one accredited subject at Advanced Level at grade E or better or two at Advanced Subsidiary Level at the same grade. One ranking competitor states six subjects; the sourced figure is five.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each entry below names the component where the grade is decided and the behaviour that loses marks there. These are the lines to put to a prospective tutor — the answers tell you whether they have read a mark scheme.

Mathematics — 0580 Extended

Extended

The structured paper carries the long multi-mark questions on functions, transformations, vectors, probability trees and compound measures. Method marks are awarded independently of the final answer, so a correct answer with no working on a four-mark item typically scores one. Non-exact answers without the required rounding instruction lose accuracy marks.

Mathematics — 4MA1 Higher

Higher

Two papers of equal weight, so running out of time on the first is unrecoverable. Content overlaps 0580 Extended but question phrasing differs, and the Pearson style leans more on multi-step problems set in context. Practice has to be board-specific; a term on the wrong archive teaches question shapes that will not appear.

Additional Mathematics — 0606

Extended only

Differentiation and integration, logarithms, the factor theorem, trigonometric identities and kinematics. Marks go to technique executed cleanly rather than to insight, which makes it unusually responsive to deliberate drilling. Students who struggle usually have an algebra weakness underneath rather than a calculus one.

Physics — 0625 Extended

Extended

Electricity and electromagnetism take most of the lost marks, especially potential dividers read as plain series chains and induction questions answered without naming the changing flux. Extended-response items reward stating the principle before the calculation. The practical route — timetabled test or alternative-to-practical — decides half the revision plan.

Chemistry — 0620 Extended

Extended

Mole arithmetic and organic pathways carry the grade. Units dropped mid-titration cost accuracy marks; a product named without its functional group scores nothing. Qualitative analysis — the ion tests and their observations — is examinable in detail and is the cheapest set of marks on the paper to secure.

Biology — 0610 Extended

Extended

Volume rather than conceptual difficulty. Extended-response marks go to candidates using the mark scheme's own vocabulary — active transport, partially permeable, selective reabsorption — rather than paraphrasing it. Questions on unfamiliar experiments with data are where strong candidates separate, and they are trainable.

English First Language — 0500

First Language

The reading paper requires quotation plus explanation of effect; a quotation alone scores nothing, and so does an assertion with no textual anchor. The writing paper is marked on audience, register and form as well as content, which is why fluent but generic prose settles at C regardless of accuracy.

English as a Second Language — 0510 / 0511

Core and Extended

The reading-and-writing paper rewards precise information transfer, and lifting whole sentences into a note-taking grid loses marks the mark scheme awards for selection. Speaking is separately assessed, carries no written revision material, and is consequently the least prepared component in the subject.

Economics — 0455

Extended

Diagram marks are awarded separately for axis labels, correct shift direction and a stated new equilibrium, so a remembered sketch loses three marks before any explanation. Evaluation questions need a judgement with a reason attached, and the judgement sentence is the single most trainable thing in the syllabus.

Business Studies — 0450

Extended

Every answer is marked against the named business in the stem. A textbook-correct definition with no application sits in the bottom band however accurate it is. Evaluation carries the top marks and is where candidates who revise content but not technique stall at a B.

Computer Science — 0478

Extended

Pseudocode is marked against the syllabus's own conventions rather than Python, which costs marks on every trace table and on algorithm-writing questions. Theory on data representation, networks and security is learnable and chronically under-revised because students prefer to code.

Accounting — 0452

Extended

Presentation marks are free and routinely discarded: a balanced trial balance with incorrect headings loses them. Accruals, prepayments and depreciation adjustments are the recurring failure point, and the fix is repeated full timed questions rather than topic-by-topic revision.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three arrangements built around the kind of work the diagnosis calls for. All are delivered over live video for UAE students, with the mark scheme open on screen.

Component-focused weekly slot

One subject, one named component, one hour a week. The session works through questions from that component with the published mark scheme alongside, so the student sees how the marks are awarded rather than only whether the answer was right.

  • Matched to the confirmed code, tier and component
  • Mark scheme open in session, not referenced afterwards
  • Self-marking taught, so practice between sessions counts
  • A short written note naming the next component focus

Two-subject technique block

Where the same behaviour is costing marks in two subjects — method unshown, mark-scheme vocabulary missing, command terms answered identically — the efficient purchase is one technique block across both rather than two subject blocks. Diagnosed from marked papers rather than from grades.

  • One named behaviour, two subjects
  • Shared error log rather than separate ones
  • Reviewed against the school's next marked assessment
  • Usually four to six sessions, not a term

Timed-paper intensive

The eight to twelve weeks before a series, built on full papers sat to time and marked against the published scheme. For a student whose content is sound and whose pacing collapses in the final third of every paper, which is a distinct and very common problem.

  • Full papers to time, marked against official schemes
  • Pacing plan built from the centre's own zone timetable
  • Scheduled around Ramadan and the school's mock window
  • Ends at the exam rather than rolling on

Cambridge 0580 Extended: where the marks actually sit

Extended Mathematics candidates sit a short-answer paper and a structured paper. The short-answer paper rewards accuracy and speed across a wide spread of topics. The structured paper carries the long multi-mark questions, and it is where grades are decided because it is where method marks exist.

Method marks are awarded independently of the final answer, which is the single most valuable thing a student can understand about this syllabus. A candidate who sets out a correct method and makes an arithmetic slip at the end can score three out of four. A candidate who writes the right answer with no working on the same question typically scores one. That is not a rule about neatness; it is how the marking works.

The topics that recur in the lost-mark list are consistent: transformations described without naming the type and the parameters, vectors where the position and direction are conflated, probability trees where the second branch is not conditioned, functions where composite and inverse notation are swapped, and compound measures where units are not carried through the calculation.

Rounding is its own quiet thief. Questions specify the degree of accuracy required, and an answer given to the wrong number of significant figures loses the accuracy mark even when the mathematics is right. Students who have never been shown this lose a mark or two on every paper for two years.

The practice that fixes all of this is narrow: structured-paper questions, worked with the mark scheme visible afterwards, with the student annotating where each mark was available. Four sessions of that changes more than a term of topic revision in a student whose content is already broadly present.

0625 Physics: electricity, induction and the practical route

Physics loses marks in a small number of places with great reliability, and electricity is first among them. The potential divider is the clearest example: students read a divider as a plain series circuit, apply a single current to the whole arrangement and lose the question before they start calculating.

Electromagnetic induction is second. The marks require a changing magnetic flux to be named as the cause, and answers that describe the wire moving without connecting it to flux change score below the top band however physically sensible they sound. Extended-response items in general reward stating the principle first and then calculating — a structure that can be taught in one session and practised in three.

Third is the treatment of graphs and gradients. Questions asking what a gradient represents are answered with a value rather than a quantity, and the mark is for the quantity. Similarly, questions about an area under a graph expect the physical meaning, not an arithmetic result alone.

Then the practical route, which is a centre-level decision and changes half the revision plan. A centre running a timetabled practical test needs apparatus handling, observation recording and the discipline of repeating a reading. A centre running the alternative-to-practical written paper needs something quite different: interpreting someone else's method, identifying the variable that was not controlled, and explaining an anomalous result rather than noting it.

Both are teachable over live video, and the alternative-to-practical route arguably better, because it is entirely a written skill. What is not acceptable is a revision plan built without knowing which one the centre uses, and that is a question for the head of science rather than for a tutor.

0620 Chemistry: moles, mechanisms and the free marks

Chemistry divides neatly into the part that is calculation and the part that is recall-with-precision, and marks are lost differently in each.

On the calculation side, mole arithmetic carries the grade. The recurring failure is not conceptual — most students can state the relationship — but procedural: units are dropped halfway through a titration calculation, concentrations and amounts are mixed, and the answer emerges with no indication of what it is. The mark scheme awards the setting-out as well as the number, so the fix is a fixed procedure practised until it is automatic.

On the organic side, the loss is naming without the functional group. A question asking for the product of a reaction wants the compound identified in a way that shows the group formed, and a bare name or a partially drawn structure does not do it. Reaction conditions are separately credited and routinely omitted, which is a free mark discarded on nearly every organic question.

Then there is qualitative analysis, which is the cheapest set of marks in the subject and the most under-revised. The ion tests and their observations are examinable in detail — reagent, observation, conclusion — and they are pure recall. A student who learns the table properly picks up marks on every paper for a few hours of work, and almost nobody does it because it feels less important than the calculations.

The practice that works here is split: timed calculation sets with the procedure enforced, and a learned observation table tested cold. Those are different activities and mixing them into general revision is why neither gets done.

0610 Biology and the vocabulary the scheme pays for

  • The scheme's own vocabulary is credited; a good paraphrase sometimes is not
  • Outline, describe, explain, distinguish and discuss expect different structures
  • Data questions on unfamiliar experiments need skills, not content
  • Trends must be described with figures quoted from the data
  • Correlation stated as cause is a standard mark loss

Biology is where students who revise hardest are most often disappointed, and the reason is linguistic rather than conceptual. The content volume is large but not difficult; the marks go to precise terms.

Extended-response items credit the mark scheme's own vocabulary. Active transport, partially permeable, selective reabsorption, limiting factor, antagonistic — each of these is the word the scheme lists, and a paraphrase that means the same thing to a biologist does not always earn the mark. Students who write fluent explanations in their own words consistently score below students who write shorter answers using the listed terms.

Command terms do the second layer of damage. Outline, describe, explain, distinguish and discuss expect different structures and mark counts, and a candidate who answers all five the same way settles around a C or a B regardless of knowledge. This is a technique problem, it is diagnosable from any marked paper in twenty minutes, and it responds to four to six sessions.

The third area is data interpretation on unfamiliar experiments. These questions are deliberately about something the student has not studied, which makes them feel unfair and makes them highly trainable: the skills are reading axes, identifying the controlled variables, describing a trend with figures quoted, and distinguishing a correlation from a cause. None of that requires content knowledge.

The practice is specific: extended-response questions rewritten using the scheme's terms, command-term sorting exercises, and a block of data questions from topics the student has not covered. Each of those is a different session, and a general revision hour does none of them.

05

English 0500: two papers, two different skills

  • Reading answers need quotation and explanation of effect together
  • Directed response is marked on use of the source, not on invention
  • Audience, register and form are separately credited in the writing paper
  • A letter written as an essay loses form marks regardless of quality
  • Pearson's anthology differs — revision does not transfer between boards

English First Language is often left out of tutoring plans on the grounds that a fluent child does not need it. Fluent children sit at grade C in this subject regularly, and the reason is that neither paper rewards fluency on its own.

The reading paper wants quotation plus explanation of effect. A student who quotes without explaining has given the examiner half an answer; a student who explains without quoting has given an assertion. The directed-response task on the same paper is assessed on how well the student uses the source material rather than on how well they write, so inventing detail — however elegantly — loses marks.

The writing paper is marked on audience, register and form as well as content and accuracy. A letter that reads like an essay loses form marks. An article with no headline convention loses them too. These are learnable conventions and they are the reason a fluent writer can be stuck: nobody has told them that the form itself is credited.

Where the board matters: Pearson's 4EA1 carries a different anthology and different set material, so a student moving between schools cannot carry revision across. That is worth confirming before buying any literature-adjacent support, because the texts are not interchangeable even when the skills are.

The practice that moves this subject is short and unglamorous: three timed writing tasks in different forms, marked against the criteria with the form marks pointed out, and a block of reading questions where every answer is checked for the quotation-plus-explanation pattern.

06

The traps that appear in every subject

Beyond the subject-specific losses, four behaviours cost marks across every IGCSE paper a student sits, and fixing them once improves every subject at the same time. This is the highest-return tutoring available and it is rarely sold, because it does not look like a subject.

First, working not shown on multi-mark questions. Method marks exist and are awarded independently of the answer. A student who writes only answers is discarding marks in Mathematics, the sciences, Economics and Accounting simultaneously.

Second, the command term unread. Calculate, state, describe, explain, suggest, compare and evaluate expect different things, and the first word of the question is the instruction. Students who answer the topic rather than the instruction lose marks in every written subject.

Third, the instruction inside the question ignored — the required accuracy, the number of points asked for, the demand to use the data provided. "Give two reasons" scores two marks and a student offering one has left a mark on the table no matter how good the reason is.

Fourth, time collapsing in the final third of the paper. If marks drop sharply at the end of every paper, the problem is pacing, not knowledge, and no amount of content teaching touches it. The fix is full papers to time with a written pacing plan, and it is visible within three attempts.

All four are visible in a single marked paper and none of them requires subject knowledge to spot. That is why this is the work to do before hiring anybody: a parent who arrives with the four checked has already done the diagnosis that a tutor would otherwise charge two sessions to reach.

07

Past-paper work that actually changes a mark

  • Three papers marked against the scheme beat twenty skimmed
  • The error log is the deliverable, in the student's own words
  • Teach self-marking early so practice between sessions counts
  • Official material cited and worked through, never redistributed
  • Use the board archive that matches your child's actual entry

Most families buy past-paper practice and most past-paper practice does nothing, because it is done in the way that feels productive rather than the way that works.

Three papers marked properly against the published scheme beat twenty papers skimmed. The marking is the active ingredient: a paper that is completed and then compared against answers teaches the student which questions they got wrong. A paper marked against the scheme teaches them where the marks were available and why they did not get them, which is a different and far more useful lesson.

The deliverable from the process is not a score. It is a one-page error log, kept across papers rather than per session, written in the student's own words. "Careless mistakes" is useless. "I write the answer without working on anything worth three or more marks" is actionable the next morning and checkable on the next paper.

Self-marking is the skill to teach early, because it makes practice between sessions count. A student who can mark their own work against a scheme converts every spare hour into useful hours; a student who cannot needs a tutor present for practice to mean anything, which is an expensive way to live.

On sourcing: syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson and are available free through your school and the boards' own channels. The legitimate approach is working through official material in session with the source named. A tutoring service hosting a download library of board material is distributing someone else's copyright, and for unreleased material the exposure is considerably worse.

Al Zahia logistics, the permit and the regulator

  • 5.30pm earliest, 6pm reliable, from Al Zahia
  • Qualified online tutor: AED 150–300 an hour in this market
  • SPEA approves Sharjah fees, curricula, programmes and assessment methods
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free and valid two years — ask
  • IB Gram holds no regulator approval and operates no UAE office

The practical and the regulatory, both briefly, because neither changes what is taught but both change what you should agree before starting.

Timing first. Al Zahia sits immediately west of the main Muwaileh campuses, and the routes in feed the Maliha Road corridor at the hour several large schools release. A household twenty minutes away by map is thirty-five minutes away at 2.45pm, and with children at two schools it is rarely settled before 5.15pm. Half past five is the earliest honest start and six o'clock the reliable one, with later slots better suited to technique work than to new content.

Cost next. Market rates for a qualified IGCSE tutor online run AED 150 to AED 300 an hour, with Unitors listing IGCSE from AED 150 and TutorChase AED 270 for specialist work. In-home one-to-one runs AED 180 to AED 500 with travel inside the figure, Bestimate's Dubai table placing the usual range at AED 180 to AED 350. Monthly packages seen in this market run around AED 799 for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to AED 1,799 for four two-hour in-home visits. Those are market figures read in October 2026, not an IB Gram price list.

Regulation. Sharjah's private schools are regulated by the Sharjah Private Education Authority, which regulates private education in the emirate and approves tuition fees, curricula, programmes, courses, activities and assessment methods. Private tutoring is separately regulated: the MoHRE private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023, is granted free of charge for two years, and covers school and government-sector teachers, private-sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. Those tutoring without one are subject to fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no schedule of amounts is published.

And the disclosure: IB Gram is not approved, accredited, licensed by or partnered with SPEA, KHDA, ADEK, the Ministry of Education, MoHRE, the IB, Cambridge or Pearson, and operates no office, centre or branch in the UAE. In-home tutoring is an India-only service; Al Zahia students are taught over live video.

Where we tutor

Al Zahia and the catchment it shares

Described by what each area does to the school day and the evening, since that is the only part of geography that touches the teaching.

Al Zahia

Villas and townhouses immediately west of Muwaileh, with City Centre Al Zahia alongside and established routes into the main campuses. Households are typically settled around 5.30pm, later where there are two school runs.

Muwaileh

The large school campuses and the dismissal congestion that goes with them along the Maliha Road corridor. Closest to the gates and still rarely settled before 4.30pm with children at two schools.

Aljada

Still filling to the south, with school provision arriving in stages. Most households travel to the same Muwaileh campuses, so the evening rhythm matches Al Zahia's closely.

University City

The higher-education cluster to the north, and the source of the emirate's genuinely cheaper budget tutoring band. Useful for content catch-up and thin on Extended-tier mark-scheme technique.

Al Qasimia

Central Sharjah, close to the older British and Indian curriculum schools, with a different board mix and shorter runs that let some families start an hour earlier.

Tilal City

Further along the Sharjah–Dhaid corridor, where the journey to the Muwaileh campuses is long enough that an in-home weekly hour stops being practical.

Al Taawun and Al Majaz

The lagoon districts, where many children attend Dubai schools and return late through Al Mamzar. Their session windows run later and compete for the same evening slots.

Al Zahia, Muwaileh and University City

The established inland campuses most Al Zahia students attend. Both Cambridge and Pearson entries appear across this cluster, and some schools split boards between subjects within a year group, which is why the component question has to be asked per subject.

Board, syllabus code, tier and — for each science — whether the centre uses the timetabled practical or the alternative-to-practical paper. Ask for the centre's own exam timetable in the same email. These decide which archive is useful and which half of the science plan matters.

  2. 02

Mark one paper against the scheme yourself

Take the most recent paper and the published scheme and go through it mark by mark. Twenty minutes of this will tell you more than a term of reports, and it will show you whether losses are content, technique, instruction-reading or pacing.

  3. 03

Put a component question to the tutor

Ask what the structured Mathematics paper rewards that the short-answer paper does not, or what the alternative-to-practical paper wants beyond describing a result. A tutor who has marked against these components answers immediately and in detail.

  4. 04

Take the free trial over live video

One session, no payment, at a time that survives the Muwaileh dismissal journey — 5.30pm at the earliest. Judge it on whether the mark scheme was on screen and whether the tutor named the recurring loss rather than discussing confidence.

  5. 05

Agree the log and the review

The deliverable from a block is a one-page error log in the student's own words and a visible change in the next marked paper. Agree both before the first invoice, and check them at the next school assessment rather than on a calendar date.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the component

Not to the subject. A tutor who teaches 0580 Extended structured questions well is a different hire from one who teaches 4MA1 Higher pacing, and both are different from a 0606 specialist. The component is the unit of the job.

The mark scheme is open on screen

The active ingredient in practice is marking against the published scheme, not completing papers. A student who can see where marks were available learns something a corrected answer cannot teach them.

The practical route is established first

A Cambridge centre runs either a timetabled practical test or the alternative-to-practical written paper, and the preparation differs substantially. Almost no tutoring enquiry asks, and half a science revision plan depends on the answer.

Self-marking is taught early

It is the skill that makes the hours between sessions count. A student who can mark their own work against a scheme converts spare time into progress; one who cannot needs a tutor present for practice to mean anything.

Board material is cited, never redistributed

Papers and schemes are worked through in session from official sources with the source named, so a family can find them again. They are Cambridge's and Pearson's copyright and free through your school. A download library is not a service.

Delivery and claims stated plainly

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Zahia: your questions answered

Which Mathematics papers does my child sit at Extended tier?+

On Cambridge 0580, Extended candidates take a short-answer paper and a structured paper. The short-answer paper rewards accuracy and speed across many topics; the structured paper carries the long multi-mark questions and is where the grade is decided, because method marks are awarded there independently of the final answer. On Pearson 4MA1 Higher there are two papers of equal weight, which means time lost on the first cannot be made up on the second. Confirm which board applies with your exams officer.

Do method marks really matter if the answer is right?+

Because method marks are awarded separately from the answer. On a four-mark structured question, a clear method with an arithmetic slip at the end can score three; the right answer with no working shown typically scores one. Students who believe only the answer is marked discard marks in Mathematics, the sciences, Economics and Accounting at the same time. It is a habit rather than a knowledge gap, and two to four sessions of annotating mark schemes usually fixes it.

What is the alternative-to-practical paper and does it change how we revise?+

It changes about half the science revision plan. A Cambridge centre assesses practical work either through a timetabled practical test or through an alternative-to-practical written paper, and the skills differ: one needs apparatus handling, repeat readings and observation recording, the other needs interpreting someone else's method, spotting the variable that was not controlled and explaining an anomaly rather than describing it. Ask your head of science which route the centre uses before buying any science tutoring.

Does a tutor come to our home in Al Zahia?+

No. IB Gram does not provide home visits in Sharjah or anywhere in the UAE; in-home tutoring is a service we run only in India, and there is no UAE office or centre. Al Zahia students are taught one-to-one over live video in Gulf Standard Time, with the past paper and the published mark scheme open on a shared screen. For this kind of component-level work that format is arguably better suited anyway, because both documents are visible to tutor and student at once.

Which IGCSE Chemistry marks are the easiest to recover?+

Qualitative analysis, almost always. The ion tests and their observations — reagent, observation, conclusion — are examinable in detail on Cambridge 0620 and are pure recall, so a student who learns the table properly picks up marks on every paper for a few hours of work. Almost nobody revises it because it feels less important than mole calculations. The second-cheapest set is reaction conditions in organic questions, which are separately credited and routinely left out entirely.

My child writes good explanations in Biology but scores in the middle. Why?+

Usually because the mark scheme credits its own vocabulary and a good paraphrase does not always earn the mark. Active transport, partially permeable, selective reabsorption and limiting factor are the listed terms, and shorter answers using them routinely outscore fluent answers that avoid them. The second cause is command terms: outline, describe, explain, distinguish and discuss expect different structures, and a candidate who answers all five identically plateaus whatever they know.

What loses marks most often in IGCSE Physics?+

Electricity first, specifically potential dividers read as plain series circuits with one current applied to the whole arrangement. Electromagnetic induction second, where the scheme wants a changing magnetic flux named as the cause and answers that only describe the wire moving score below the top band. Third, graph questions answered with a numerical value where the mark is for the physical quantity the gradient or area represents. All three are narrow, diagnosable and responsive to targeted question sets.

How many past papers should my child work through?+

Fewer than you think, done properly. Three papers marked against the published scheme beat twenty completed and skimmed, because the marking is the active ingredient — it shows where marks were available and why they were missed, rather than which answers were wrong. The output should be a one-page error log, kept across papers, in the student's own words. "Careless mistakes" is useless; "I give one reason when two are asked for" is actionable the next morning.

Why does it matter whether the school enters Cambridge or Pearson?+

Because the practice archive, the tiering language and the paper structure all differ. Cambridge Mathematics 0580 is tiered Core and Extended with a heavily weighted structured paper; Pearson 4MA1 is Foundation and Higher with two papers of equal weight. Cambridge science centres choose between a practical test and an alternative-to-practical paper; Pearson concentrates most routes into written papers. English set texts and anthologies differ entirely. A term on the wrong board's papers teaches question shapes that will not appear.

Is English First Language worth tutoring for a fluent child?+

Often yes, because neither paper rewards fluency by itself. The reading paper credits quotation together with explanation of effect, so quoting alone or asserting alone each lose half the answer. The writing paper is marked on audience, register and form as well as content, which is why a letter written as an essay loses form marks regardless of quality. Three timed tasks in different forms, marked against the criteria with the form marks pointed out, usually moves a stuck grade.

How do I tell whether my child's problem is content or pacing?+

Look at where in the paper the marks disappear. If losses are spread evenly with blank spaces, that is content not reached or not known. If marks fall away sharply in the final third of every paper while the opening sections score, that is pacing, and no amount of content teaching will touch it. Pacing is fixed with full papers sat to time and a written plan for minutes per mark, and the improvement is usually visible within three attempts.

Can a tutor teach Additional Mathematics 0606 as part of 0580 sessions?+

It should not be treated that way. 0606 is a separate Extended-only syllabus introducing differentiation, integration, logarithms, the factor theorem and trigonometric identities that 0580 never reaches, with its own question shapes. Treating it as harder 0580 revision is the standard mistake. Students who struggle with it usually have an algebra weakness underneath rather than a calculus one, which is worth diagnosing first. The tutor pool for it is thin across the emirate, so book early.

Can a tutor give us the mark schemes to work from at home?+

They should point you to the official source rather than host copies. Syllabus documents, past papers, mark schemes and grade-boundary tables belong to Cambridge and Pearson and are available free through your school and the boards' own channels, which is also why there is no reason for a tutoring service to be distributing them. The legitimate approach is working through official material in session with the source named so a family can find it again themselves.

What time can IGCSE sessions start from Al Zahia?+

Half past five at the earliest and six o'clock reliably. Al Zahia sits immediately west of the main Muwaileh campuses, but the routes in feed the Maliha Road corridor exactly when several large schools release, so a twenty-minute journey by map takes thirty-five at 2.45pm, and households with two school runs are rarely settled before 5.15pm. Later slots are better used for technique and timed practice, which need less fresh energy than new content does.

Name the component, then the loss

If you are looking for an IGCSE home tutor in Al Zahia, the fastest route to useful help is to stop talking about subjects and start talking about components. Get the board, code, tier and practical route from your school, mark one paper against the published scheme yourself, and take the specific recurring loss into the first conversation. Then take a free trial session over live video, with the mark scheme on screen, and judge the tutor on whether they can name the marks you found.
