IGCSE Science Tutor in Al Barsha

Before comparing one IGCSE science tutor in Al Barsha against another, compare the routes. Your child is on separate sciences, a co-ordinated double award, a single combined award or a Pearson double award, and those four sit different papers, award different numbers of grades and open different doors at sixteen. This page compares them, and compares what the schools in Al Barsha and Al Barsha South actually enter students for.

  • Matched to the science route and the syllabus code, not to the word science
  • Alternative-to-practical technique taught as its own component
  • Route consequences at sixteen stated before any teaching is planned

IB & IGCSE in Al Barsha

Four routes, and only one of them is your child's

The phrase IGCSE science covers four quite different qualifications, and a family in Al Barsha comparing tutors without knowing which one applies is comparing the wrong thing. The first route is separate sciences: three qualifications, three grades, with Cambridge codes 0625 Physics, 0620 Chemistry and 0610 Biology, or the Pearson equivalents 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1. The second is a co-ordinated double award, Cambridge 0654, which covers all three disciplines and is reported as a double award. The third is a single combined award, Cambridge 0653, covering all three in less depth for one grade. The fourth is the Pearson Science Double Award, 4SD0, which covers all three and awards two grades.

The differences are not academic hair-splitting. They change which topics are in scope, how many papers are sat, how many grades appear on a certificate, and what a sixth form will accept for A Level entry in a science. A student on a combined route who has been working through separate-science revision material has been revising content their syllabus excludes, which is a term of effort pointed at the wrong target. A student on separate sciences who has been using co-ordinated resources has gaps they do not know about.

This page therefore runs two comparisons. The first is between the routes, because that is the comparison that changes a grade. The second is between districts, because that is the comparison parents in Al Barsha actually ask about: Al Barsha 1 against Al Barsha South, against Al Barsha Heights, against Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills. The honest result of the second comparison is that what varies by district is which routes the local schools tend to offer, and what does not vary is the syllabus, the papers or the pool of people who can teach them.

There is a third comparison worth making and it sits inside the sciences themselves. Physics, chemistry and biology fail students in different ways. Physics loses marks in circuit analysis and in converting a graph gradient into a physical quantity with units. Chemistry loses them in moles calculations, ionic equations and the qualitative analysis tables. Biology loses them to command-term imprecision: describing when an explanation was asked for, naming a structure without its function. A tutor who treats science as one subject will apply one method to three different problems.

IB Gram delivers tuition for UAE families as one-to-one online tuition over live video, scheduled in Gulf Standard Time. IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service offered only in India. For the sciences that distinction has a specific shape: hands-on laboratory work belongs to the school, which holds the equipment and the supervision requirement, while the examined practical component on most Cambridge routes is the alternative-to-practical paper, which is a written paper and is taught better with a shared screen than at a bench.

At a glance

  • Four routes: separate sciences, Cambridge 0654 double award, Cambridge 0653 combined, Pearson 4SD0
  • Cambridge separate sciences use Paper 1/2 multiple choice, Paper 3/4 theory, Paper 5 or 6 practical
  • Paper 6 is the alternative to practical and is a written paper, not a laboratory session
  • Combined and co-ordinated routes exclude topics separate-science resources cover
  • The three sciences fail students in three different ways and need three methods
  • What varies by district is route availability, not syllabus or tutor supply

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

These are the four routes, described by structure rather than by difficulty, because structure is what decides which past papers a session should use and which topics are safely out of scope.

SeparateAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

Separate sciences: Cambridge 0625, 0620, 0610

Three qualifications and three grades. Each is entered at Core or Extended tier and each sits a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and a practical component, which is either the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper. Core candidates take Paper 1 and Paper 3; Extended candidates take Paper 2 and Paper 4. This is the route most sixth forms prefer for A Level science entry, because it evidences depth in the specific subject.

The British-pathway schools in Al Barsha 1 and Al Sufouh concentrate their strongest science sets here. A student on separate sciences has three syllabuses and three sets of past papers, which is also why families on this route most often end up buying support in two subjects rather than one and should decide in advance how many they are willing to fund.

0654Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences, Double Award

All three disciplines in one syllabus, reported as a double award, entered at Core or Extended with the same paper architecture as the separate sciences. Content is genuinely narrower than three separate syllabuses: specific topics are out of scope, and knowing exactly which ones saves a term of misdirected revision. Confirm with the centre how the award is reported on the certificate.

This is a common route in Dubai schools balancing a broad curriculum against timetable pressure. The practical risk for an Al Barsha family is resource mismatch: online revision material is overwhelmingly written for separate sciences, so a 0654 candidate working alone will almost certainly revise material their papers will not ask about.

0653Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Cambridge Combined Science

All three disciplines in less depth for a single grade, entered at Core or Extended. It is a legitimate route for a student whose strengths lie elsewhere and whose post-sixteen plans do not require a science A Level. Scope is the defining feature: a substantial amount of what appears in separate-science past papers is simply not examinable here.

Where a student in this catchment is entered for 0653 and hopes to take a science at A Level, that conversation should happen with the school early rather than after results. Sixth forms set their own entry requirements and several will want evidence from a separate science or a double award rather than a single combined grade.

4SD0Ages 14-16 · Years 10-11

Pearson Edexcel Science Double Award

Pearson's double-award route, covering biology, chemistry and physics and awarding two grades. Papers, mark-scheme conventions and question styles follow Pearson practice rather than Cambridge, and Pearson publishes its own assessment materials and timetables. A tutor who has only taught Cambridge will mark against the wrong expectations for working and presentation.

Several Al Barsha schools run Pearson for some subjects and Cambridge for others, which produces split-board profiles within a single student's timetable. The statement of entry is the only reliable source for which board applies to the sciences, and it is worth reading before any tutoring rate is agreed.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

The sciences fail students in different ways, and the entries below name the specific failure points in each discipline alongside the codes. This is the level of detail a route comparison has to reach to be useful.

Physics (Cambridge 0625 · Pearson 4PH1)

Core and Extended · single tier at Pearson

Electricity and circuit analysis cause the most trouble, followed by any question requiring a graph gradient to be converted into a physical quantity with its unit. Moments and density questions are reliable marks for a prepared candidate. Extended-tier questions on electromagnetic induction and on the gas laws reward precise sequencing rather than recall.

Chemistry (Cambridge 0620 · Pearson 4CH1)

Core and Extended · single tier at Pearson

Moles calculations, ionic equations and the qualitative analysis tables concentrate the losses. Organic chemistry is typically learned as a list of names rather than reaction types, so students recognise an alcohol and cannot predict what it does. Extended electrolysis questions want half-equations written correctly rather than described.

Biology (Cambridge 0610 · Pearson 4BI1)

Core and Extended · single tier at Pearson

Content volume rather than conceptual depth. Marks go to imprecise command-term responses: describing when the paper asked for an explanation, or naming a structure without its function. Transport in plants, enzymes and genetics crosses all reward exact vocabulary, and magnification calculations are easy marks for a numerate candidate.

Cambridge Co-ordinated Sciences 0654

Core and Extended, double award

The same three disciplines with a defined narrower scope. The single most valuable thing a tutor can do in the first session is mark the boundary: which separate-science topics are out of scope, so the student stops revising them. That conversation regularly saves more time than any amount of teaching.

Cambridge Combined Science 0653

Core and Extended, single award

The narrowest route, awarding one grade. Students and parents frequently work from separate-science resources here, which is the costliest resource mismatch available in IGCSE science. Establishing scope from the current syllabus document, which the school holds, is the first step rather than an afterthought.

Pearson Science Double Award 4SD0

Double award, two grades

Pearson's own structure and conventions across the three disciplines. Its question styles build context across multi-part questions and its presentational expectations differ from Cambridge. A candidate trained on Cambridge papers will lose a few marks a paper for reasons unconnected to science knowledge.

The alternative-to-practical paper

Cambridge Paper 6

Assesses experimental literacy in writing: reading a scale correctly, identifying a control variable, recognising why a result is anomalous, and drawing a line of best fit the data supports. It is the most trainable component in the whole route and the one students most reliably arrive at unprepared, because it does not feel like revision.

Mathematics (Cambridge 0580 · Pearson 4MA1)

Core and Extended · Foundation and Higher

The sciences assume rearranging formulae, handling standard form, and proportional reasoning. A student losing science marks to algebra rather than to science has one problem presenting as three, and closing it in a single place is cheaper than closing it in physics, chemistry and biology separately.

Additional and Further Mathematics (0606 · 4PM1)

Single tier

Taken alongside the sciences by students heading for engineering or medicine. Relevant here because a school entering a student for Additional Mathematics is usually also entering them for separate sciences, so the two route decisions tend to travel together.

Arabic and the UAE mandatory subjects

First Language 0508 · Foreign Language 0544

Arabic, Islamic Education and Social or Moral Studies run alongside the licensed international curriculum in every Dubai private school, in every district. KHDA requires separate classes for Arabs and non-Arabs in Arabic as a first language, Islamic Education and Social Studies, with combined classes prohibited.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, chosen by how many sciences are being supported rather than by budget, because on a separate-sciences route the question is subject count before it is session count. All three run online over live video.

One science, weekly

A fixed weekly slot on the single discipline where the marks are being lost, with the syllabus code and tier confirmed first. On a separate-sciences route this is usually the right starting point, because the three subjects fail students differently and the weakest one rarely improves as a side effect of supporting another.

  • One syllabus code and tier throughout
  • Topic order matched to the school's scheme of work
  • The alternative-to-practical paper built in deliberately
  • A running list of topics covered and outstanding

Scope-setting block for a combined route

Two or three sessions at the start of a co-ordinated or combined course that establish exactly what is and is not examinable, from the current syllabus document the school holds. Unglamorous and frequently the single most cost-effective purchase on these routes, because it stops a year of revising excluded material.

  • Scope read off the current syllabus, not a revision website
  • A written list of separate-science topics that are out of scope
  • Past papers selected for the actual route and tier
  • A revision plan that excludes what the papers exclude

Practical-paper intensive

A short run of sessions on the alternative-to-practical paper, which is written rather than laboratory-based and is the most trainable component on the Cambridge routes. Most students arrive at it with no specific preparation because it does not resemble revision, which is precisely why a few focused sessions move marks.

  • Scale reading, control variables and anomalous results drilled
  • Lines of best fit judged against what the data supports
  • Past practical papers marked to the published scheme
  • Covered for the correct route, since scope differs

01

The four science routes compared

This is the comparison that changes a grade, and it should be settled before any tutor is chosen. The table below sets the four routes side by side on the dimensions that matter: codes, paper architecture, grades awarded, scope and what each route typically permits at sixteen. Entry details should be confirmed from the statement of entry and from the centre, because schools enter different sets differently and a sibling's route is not evidence of your child's.

The paper architecture is worth understanding in its own right. On the Cambridge separate sciences and on 0654, Core candidates sit a multiple-choice Paper 1 and a theory Paper 3, while Extended candidates sit a multiple-choice Paper 2 and a theory Paper 4. Both tiers then sit a practical component, which is either Paper 5, the practical test, or Paper 6, the alternative to practical, depending on what the centre enters candidates for. Pearson's routes use their own paper structures and their own conventions.

The scope column is the one that costs money when it is ignored. On 0654 and 0653 a defined set of separate-science topics is simply not examinable, and almost all freely available revision material online is written for separate sciences. A student on a combined route revising from that material is doing real work that the papers will not reward, and nobody notices until a mock. Establishing scope from the current syllabus document, which the school holds, is a two-session job and it is the best value available on these routes.

The post-sixteen column should be read with care rather than treated as a rule. Sixth forms set their own entry requirements and those vary, including between schools in this catchment. The pattern is that separate sciences evidence depth in a specific subject and are the most straightforward route into a science A Level, that double awards are widely but not universally accepted, and that a single combined grade is the hardest case. Where a student on a combined route wants a science A Level, that conversation belongs with the school now rather than after results.

Al Barsha against the next district over: what route availability does

Now the comparison parents actually make. Al Barsha 1 against Al Barsha South, against Al Barsha Heights, against Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills. The honest answer for science tutoring is that one thing differs between them and two things do not, and the thing that differs is upstream of tutoring entirely.

What differs is route availability, because it follows the schools. The British-pathway schools concentrated in Al Barsha 1 and in the Al Sufouh strip are where separate-science entries cluster. Al Barsha South contains an IB continuum school, Dwight School Dubai, so a family there may be comparing MYP sciences against IGCSE rather than comparing two IGCSE routes. American-curriculum schools in the cluster enter students for other qualifications entirely. So a family choosing a district is, indirectly, choosing a likely route, and that is a real consideration when choosing a school.

What does not differ is the syllabus and the tutor pool. Cambridge sets 0625, 0620, 0610, 0654 and 0653, and Pearson sets its own codes, and none of them varies by postcode. The number of people in Dubai who have taught 0654 specifically, and who can state its scope boundary without looking it up, is small; Dubai's private sector served 387,441 students across 227 private schools in 2024-25 across seventeen curricula, with the UK curriculum at 37 per cent of enrolment, and the co-ordinated routes are a minority within that. Dividing a small specialist population by district produces a very small one.

The table below makes the district comparison concrete, with the one column that genuinely varies alongside the columns that do not. The honest conclusion is the same as it would be for any subject here: compare districts for schools, commute and household fit, and do not compare them for access to a tutor. IB Gram delivers UAE lessons as one-to-one online tuition over live video and does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE; home visiting is a service offered only in India, which is what makes the access identical across the set.

Three sciences, three failure modes

A tutor who treats science as a single subject will bring one method to three different problems. The three disciplines lose marks in characteristically different places, and knowing which one is costing your child is more useful than knowing their overall science grade.

Physics losses cluster in two places. The first is electricity, specifically circuit analysis where a student has to reason about what happens to current and potential difference when a component changes rather than apply a remembered formula. The second is graph work: converting a gradient into a physical quantity with its correct unit, which appears across mechanics, electricity and thermal physics. Both are reasoning habits and both respond to deliberate practice rather than to re-reading notes.

Chemistry losses are more arithmetic in character. Moles calculations, concentration work and empirical formula questions depend on proportional reasoning the student may be shaky on in mathematics too. Ionic equations and the qualitative analysis tables reward precise recall of a small body of specific material, which is efficiently learned and rarely learned efficiently. Organic chemistry taught as a list of names rather than as reaction types is the single most common structural weakness at Extended tier.

Biology losses are almost entirely linguistic. The content volume is high and the conceptual demand is lower than in the other two, so marks go to imprecision: a description offered where an explanation was required, a structure named without its function, a process described without its purpose. Command-term discipline is therefore the highest-return work in biology, and it is work a student can continue alone once it has been taught once. The table below sets the three side by side with a realistic repair estimate.

04

The alternative-to-practical paper, which almost nobody prepares for

  • Paper 6 is the alternative to practical and is written rather than laboratory-based
  • It assesses scale reading, variable identification, anomalies and lines of best fit
  • Technique transfers across physics, chemistry and biology at once
  • Hands-on laboratory work belongs to the school and is not replaced by tutoring

On the Cambridge science routes the practical component is either Paper 5, the practical test, or Paper 6, the alternative to practical, depending on what the centre enters candidates for. Many Dubai centres use the alternative, and it is the most neglected component on the whole route. It does not feel like revision, it is not covered by most online revision material in any depth, and students arrive at it having done no specific preparation.

What it assesses is experimental literacy in writing. Reading a scale or an instrument correctly and recording to an appropriate precision. Identifying the independent, dependent and control variables in an unfamiliar method. Recognising why a particular result is anomalous rather than merely different. Drawing a line of best fit that the data supports rather than one that joins the first and last points. Suggesting an improvement that would actually address the weakness identified rather than a generic one.

Every item on that list is trainable, and the training transfers across all three disciplines, which makes it unusually good value on a separate-sciences route where a family is funding help in two subjects. Three or four focused sessions on practical-paper technique improves the practical component in physics, chemistry and biology simultaneously. Few requests in IGCSE science have that property.

One important clarification on delivery. Hands-on laboratory work belongs to the school, which holds the equipment, the technician support and the safety and supervision requirements, and no tutoring arrangement should claim to replace it. The alternative-to-practical paper, however, is a written paper. Working through it with the question, the student's own attempt and the published mark scheme on one shared screen is a format that suits the task better than a bench does, and the session can be recorded for revision.

05

Cambridge against Pearson for the sciences

  • The science board cannot be assumed from the mathematics board at the same school
  • Cambridge: tiered entry, Papers 1 or 2, 3 or 4, and 5 or 6 for the practical
  • Pearson: two written papers per separate science, and 4SD0 awards two grades
  • UAE candidates sit June and November; February/March is India-only

Several Al Barsha schools run Pearson for some subjects and Cambridge for others, which means the board for the sciences cannot be assumed from the board for mathematics. The statement of entry is the only reliable source, and reading it before agreeing any tutoring rate is free.

The structural differences matter for teaching. Cambridge separate sciences and 0654 use tiered entry with a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper and a practical component, with Core candidates on Papers 1 and 3 and Extended candidates on Papers 2 and 4. Pearson's separate sciences, 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1, use two written papers per subject with their own conventions, and the 4SD0 Double Award covers all three disciplines and awards two grades. Pearson publishes its own assessment materials, and those are the ones a Pearson candidate should be working from.

Session timing also differs by board and it affects planning. Cambridge runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Primary and Lower Secondary Checkpoint tests in March, May and October, and allocates every centre to one of six administrative zones. Cambridge's exams officers' guide is explicit that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the zone, because Cambridge cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong one. Ask the exams officer for the zone and the dated timetable together.

Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November. The November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026, June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, and those can be revised, so the live official timetable should be the reference rather than any restatement of it. The February and March series is offered to India only and does not apply to candidates in Dubai.

06

Why the route decision outweighs the neighbourhood

  • Route decides examinable content, papers, grades and post-16 options
  • District decides which routes are locally common and what hour works
  • Two scope-setting sessions are the best buy on a combined route
  • Practical-paper technique improves all three sciences simultaneously

Pulling the two comparisons together produces a clear ranking. The route your child is entered for changes which topics are examinable, how many papers they sit, how many grades they receive and what a sixth form will accept. The district you live in changes which routes the nearby schools tend to offer and what time a session can start. The first of those decides a science grade. The second decides a diary entry.

That ordering has a practical consequence for how a family spends. The highest-return purchase on a combined or co-ordinated route is two sessions establishing scope from the current syllabus document, because it stops months of misdirected revision. The highest-return purchase on a separate-sciences route is usually practical-paper technique, because it improves three subjects at once. Neither of those is what a parent typically asks for, and neither depends on anybody being able to drive to Al Barsha South.

There is one case where moving district genuinely changed the qualification, and it is worth naming because it is common in Dubai Hills and Al Barsha South. A student who transfers school mid-course can land on a different science route than the one they left: separate sciences to a double award, or a double award to separate sciences. The second direction is the dangerous one, because the student now needs content their previous syllabus excluded and nobody has flagged it. One diagnostic session mapping what was taught against what the new route requires is the cheapest fix available.

Beyond that, the useful framing for an Al Barsha family is that the science questions are route questions and the district questions are schooling questions. Pick the school on programme fit, commute and the things families normally weigh. Then read the statement of entry, establish the route and the tier, and buy support against that. The people who can teach it are reachable from every district in this comparison on identical terms.

07

What it costs, and the claims to check in any district

  • Two sciences at one weekly session each: roughly AED 1,200-2,400 a month at the mid band
  • The MoHRE private tuition permit is free of charge and valid for two years
  • Regulators oversee schools; none of them accredits a tutoring platform
  • Past papers and mark schemes are linked at source, never redistributed

Market rates, read in October 2026 and attributed to the providers who publish them. Tutopiya advertises from AED 33 to AED 52 an hour and EdFlik from AED 45 to AED 65, usually delivered by current university students. Unitors publishes from AED 150 for IGCSE for qualified online subject tutors. TutorChase publishes AED 270, and Bestimate places specialist exam-year work at AED 200 to AED 450 and above. Bestimate quotes in-home visits including travel at AED 180 to AED 350, independent home tutors advertise AED 200 to AED 500, and BartyED publishes AED 650 for premium named tutors. Bestimate's monthly estimates for weekly one-hour sessions run AED 240 to AED 600 budget, AED 600 to AED 1,200 mid and AED 1,000 to AED 2,000 and above for specialist exam-year support. None of this is an IB Gram price list.

The specific arithmetic that bites on a separate-sciences route is the subject count. Supporting two of the three sciences at one weekly session each on the mid band is roughly AED 1,200 to AED 2,400 a month, and three is AED 1,800 to AED 3,600. That is the pattern families drift into between October and February as each mock produces a new worry. Deciding in advance how many sciences will be funded, and accepting the others will be what they will be, is a cost control and usually an academic one too, because the student's week is finite.

On claims, three checks apply identically in every district. The permit: private tutoring in the UAE is regulated by permit, the private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, and MoHRE's service page is Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing with no fees and a two-working-day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. Tutoring without a permit carries fines and penalties under the applicable laws, and no fine schedule is published, so no amount should be quoted to you.

Accreditation: KHDA is responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in Dubai, ADEK supervises the licensing and accreditation of private schools in Abu Dhabi, the Sharjah Private Education Authority regulates private education in Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah's Department of Knowledge does so there, and the Ministry of Education supervises private schools in Ajman, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah. Those bodies regulate schools. IB Gram holds no accreditation from any of them, nor from Cambridge or Pearson, and claims none. And materials: syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes belong to the awarding bodies and should be referenced and linked at source rather than redistributed as downloads.

Where we tutor

Al Barsha and the districts next door

What each neighbouring district contributes, with the honest note on where the difference is about route availability and where it is about nothing at all.

Al Barsha 1

The densest school cluster here, with the American School of Dubai, Dubai American Academy and Kings' School Al Barsha close together. British-pathway schools in this cluster are where separate-science entries concentrate, while American-curriculum schools enter students for other qualifications entirely.

Al Barsha 2 and Al Barsha 3

Residential villa streets inland, with Al Mawakeb School Al Barsha and Dubai National School Al Barsha nearby. Mixed-curriculum households are common, which means siblings on separate sciences and on a double award in the same family with different past papers.

Al Barsha South

Newer districts towards Dubai Hills and Jumeirah Village, with Nord Anglia International School Dubai, Dwight School Dubai, Safa Community School and Dubai Heights Academy. Dwight runs the IB continuum, so some students here meet MYP sciences rather than IGCSE at all.

Al Barsha Heights

The apartment district formerly known as TECOM, north towards Sheikh Zayed Road. Working households predominate and students commute to schools elsewhere, so route availability here is a function of the school chosen rather than of the district lived in.

Al Sufouh

The coastal strip west across Sheikh Zayed Road, with Dubai College and GEMS Wellington International School. Long-established British and IB provision, and the strip where separate-science sets are most concentrated in this part of the city.

Dubai Hills Estate

Newer villa communities inland with a growing school supply. Mid-course arrivals are more frequent here, and a student arriving mid-Year 10 from another country often arrives onto a different science route than the one they left.

Al Quoz

Industrial and residential mix east of Al Barsha with schools on its edges. Commutes into the Al Barsha cluster are slow at the evening peak, which affects session timing rather than which route a student is on.

Umm Al Sheif and Al Safa

Between Al Barsha and the coast, villa-heavy with British and IB schools mixed. One street can hold a separate-sciences candidate, a double-award candidate and an MYP sciences student, with no shared revision plan between them.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Barsha

Al Barsha 1 and the central cluster

The nearest grouping of large international schools, spanning American and British curricula. Which science route a school enters students for varies by school and by set, and the statement of entry is the only reliable source. No route can be inferred from the postcode.

  • American School of Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Al Mawakeb School Al Barsha
  • Dubai National School Al Barsha

Al Barsha South and the Dubai Hills edge

The newer districts inland, with British and IB continuum schools. Because Dwight School Dubai runs the IB continuum, a family comparing Al Barsha South with Al Barsha 1 may be comparing MYP sciences against IGCSE rather than two IGCSE routes.

  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai
  • Dwight School Dubai
  • Safa Community School
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • GEMS Metropole School

Al Sufouh and Emirates Hills

West and inland of Al Barsha, with long-established British and IB schools. Students transferring between these clusters mid-course are the most frequent source of a route change, which is the one case where moving district genuinely altered the qualification.

  • Dubai College
  • GEMS Wellington International School
  • Dubai British School Emirates Hills
  • Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills

Schools are named to describe the New Dubai education ecosystem families here already know. No affiliation, endorsement or partnership with any named school or group is implied, and none exists. Science routes offered vary by school, set and year, and should be confirmed from the statement of entry.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Read the route off the statement of entry

It names the board, the codes and the tier for the sciences, which is how you learn whether your child is on separate sciences, Cambridge 0654, Cambridge 0653 or Pearson 4SD0. A sibling's route is not evidence, and schools enter different sets differently, so the document matters more than the assumption.

  2. 02

Ask whether Paper 5 or Paper 6 applies

The Cambridge practical component is either the practical test or the alternative-to-practical paper, and the centre decides. The technique differs between them. The exams officer can confirm it in one line, and it changes what the practical-paper sessions should actually practise.

  3. 03

On a combined route, buy scope first

Two sessions establishing what is and is not examinable, read from the current syllabus document the school holds. Almost all freely available revision material is written for separate sciences, so a 0654 or 0653 candidate working alone will revise content the papers will not ask about.

  4. 04

Decide how many sciences you will fund

Three sciences at one weekly session each is roughly AED 1,800 to AED 3,600 a month at the mid band, and eleven commitments in a student's week. Writing down the number in advance prevents the drift from one subject in October to three by February, which is the commonest overspend here.

  5. 05

Take the free trial on the practical paper

One lesson, one subject, before any payment is taken. Spending it on alternative-to-practical technique tests the tutor on the component students arrive least prepared for, and the technique transfers across all three sciences, so the trial itself produces something usable whatever you decide next.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the route, not to the word science

Separate sciences, Cambridge 0654, Cambridge 0653 and Pearson 4SD0 examine different content with different papers. Confirming the route and the codes before the first session is what stops a term of work on material the student's own papers exclude.

Scope stated from the syllabus, not a website

On combined and co-ordinated routes the scope boundary is the single most valuable thing a tutor can establish, and it is read from the current syllabus document the school holds. Online revision material is overwhelmingly written for separate sciences, which is where the mismatch comes from.

The practical paper treated as a component

The alternative-to-practical paper is written, trainable and almost never specifically prepared for. Three or four sessions on scale reading, variable identification, anomalies and lines of best fit improves physics, chemistry and biology simultaneously.

Three sciences, three methods

Physics loses marks in circuit reasoning and graph interpretation, chemistry in moles work and precise recall, biology in command-term imprecision. A tutor applying one method to all three is addressing one of the problems and leaving two.

District differences stated, not inflated

Route availability genuinely follows the schools, so the district matters when choosing one. The syllabus, the papers and the specialist pool do not vary across Al Barsha, Al Barsha South, Al Barsha Heights, Al Sufouh and Dubai Hills, and this page says so rather than implying local depth.

Rates attributed, materials respected

Every AED figure names the provider or research that published it, read in October 2026. Syllabus documents, past papers and mark schemes belong to Cambridge and Pearson, are referenced and linked at source, and are never supplied as a download bundle.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Barsha: your questions answered

Which IGCSE science route is my child in Al Barsha actually on?+

One of four, and the statement of entry says which. Separate sciences means three qualifications and three grades, Cambridge 0625, 0620 and 0610 or the Pearson equivalents. Cambridge 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences covers all three and is reported as a double award. Cambridge 0653 Combined Science covers all three in less depth for one grade. Pearson 4SD0 Science Double Award covers all three and awards two grades. Schools enter different sets differently, so a sibling's route is not evidence of your child's.

What is the difference between co-ordinated and combined science?+

Depth and the number of grades. Cambridge 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences covers all three disciplines and is reported as a double award; Cambridge 0653 Combined Science covers them in less depth for a single grade. Both have a defined scope that excludes topics the separate sciences include, which matters enormously for revision because almost all freely available material online is written for separate sciences. Confirm with the centre how the award is reported, since that is what a sixth form will read.

Will a double award be accepted for A Level science?+

Often, and it depends on the sixth form rather than on a general rule. Schools set their own entry requirements and those vary between schools in this catchment. The pattern is that separate sciences are the most straightforward route into a science A Level because they evidence depth in the specific subject, double awards are widely but not universally accepted, and a single combined grade is the hardest case. If your child is on a combined route and wants a science A Level, raise it with the school now rather than after results.

On the Cambridge science routes, what is Paper 6 assessing?+

Experimental literacy in writing rather than manual skill. Reading a scale or instrument to an appropriate precision. Identifying independent, dependent and control variables in an unfamiliar method. Recognising why a particular result is anomalous rather than simply different. Drawing a line of best fit the data supports instead of joining the first and last points. Suggesting an improvement that addresses the weakness identified. All of it is trainable in three or four sessions, and the technique transfers across all three sciences at once.

Does my child sit Paper 5 or Paper 6 for the practical?+

The centre decides, so ask the exams officer. Paper 5 is the practical test and Paper 6 is the alternative to practical, and many Dubai centres use the alternative. The technique required differs between them, so a tutor should know which applies before planning practical sessions. This is a one-line answer that nobody volunteers, and getting it wrong means practising the wrong kind of preparation for a component that forms part of every science grade on the route.

Is it easier to find a science tutor in Al Barsha 1 than in Al Barsha South?+

No. What differs between these districts is which routes the local schools tend to offer: separate-science entries cluster at the British-pathway schools in Al Barsha 1 and the Al Sufouh strip, while Al Barsha South contains an IB continuum school where some students meet MYP sciences rather than IGCSE. The syllabus, the papers and the pool of people who have taught 0654 or 4SD0 do not vary by postcode, and that pool is small across the whole emirate.

My child moved school and the science route changed. What now?+

Buy one diagnostic session before anything else, especially if the change was from a combined or co-ordinated route onto separate sciences. In that direction the student now needs content their previous syllabus excluded, and neither school will have flagged it because each assumes the other covered it. One session maps what was actually taught against what the new route requires, and produces a written gap list with a week count. Mid-course arrivals are most common in Dubai Hills and Al Barsha South.

How many of the three sciences should we pay for support in?+

Decide the number before October rather than during February. Two sciences at one weekly session each on the mid band of AED 150 to AED 300 is roughly AED 1,200 to AED 2,400 a month, and three is AED 1,800 to AED 3,600 plus eleven commitments in a student's week. Those are market figures read in October 2026 and attributed to the providers who publish them. Supporting fewer subjects properly beats supporting more thinly, and the student's available evenings are a real limit.

Where does my child lose marks in IGCSE physics specifically?+

Two places reliably. Circuit analysis, where the question asks what happens to current and potential difference when a component changes rather than inviting a remembered formula. And graph work, where a gradient has to be converted into a physical quantity with its correct unit, which appears across mechanics, electricity and thermal physics. Both are reasoning habits rather than knowledge gaps, which is why re-reading notes does not help and deliberate practice with past questions does.

Why does organic chemistry cause so much trouble at Extended tier?+

Because it is usually learned as a list of names rather than as a set of reaction types. A student can identify an alcohol and still be unable to predict what it does, because they have memorised labels instead of behaviour. The fix is to reorganise the material by reaction type, which takes two or three sessions and then supports itself. The related loss is electrolysis, where Extended questions want half-equations written correctly rather than described in words.

Is biology just memorisation, and can a tutor help with that?+

The volume is high and the conceptual demand is lower than in physics or chemistry, but the marks are not lost to memory. They are lost to imprecision: a description offered where an explanation was required, a structure named without its function, a process described without its purpose. Command-term discipline is the highest-return work in biology, it takes two or three sessions to teach, and a student can then continue it alone. Magnification calculations are easy marks for a numerate candidate.

Which exam series will an Al Barsha science candidate sit?+

June or November. Cambridge runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level exams in a June series and a November series, with Checkpoint tests in March, May and October, and allocates each centre to one of six administrative zones with an explicit warning that the correct zone timetable must be used. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE runs May/June and November; the November 2026 final timetable runs from late October to 19 November 2026. The February and March series is offered to India only.

Can online lessons cover science practical work?+

Not the hands-on part, which belongs to the school with its equipment, technician support and supervision requirements. What online lessons cover well is everything the examination actually assesses on most Cambridge routes, because the alternative-to-practical paper is written. Working through it with the question, the student's own attempt and the published mark scheme on one shared screen suits the task better than a bench does, and the session can be recorded for revision. Any provider claiming to run practicals for a Dubai family should be questioned.

Do science tutors in Dubai need a permit, and does it affect the price?+

A permit is required and it costs nothing. The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 and is granted free of charge for two years, with MoHRE listing the service as Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, no fees and a two-working-day completion time. Eligible applicants include registered school teachers, government and private sector employees, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged fifteen to eighteen. No fine schedule is published, so no fine amount should be quoted to you.

Should we buy separate-science revision guides for a 0654 candidate?+

Not without first establishing the scope boundary. Cambridge 0654 Co-ordinated Sciences has a defined narrower scope than three separate syllabuses, and separate-science material covers topics the 0654 papers will not ask about. A student working from that material does real work that earns nothing, and nobody notices until a mock. Two sessions reading the scope off the current syllabus document, which the school holds, is the most cost-effective purchase available on this route.

Which single piece of science work improves all three subjects?+

Practical-paper technique, on the Cambridge routes. Scale reading, variable identification, recognising a genuine anomaly, lines of best fit judged against the data, and improvements that address the weakness found all appear in the physics, chemistry and biology practical components alike. Three or four sessions therefore pay three times, which is unusual in IGCSE science. The second candidate is units and significant figures discipline, which takes one or two sessions and recurs on every paper a student will sit.

Settle the route first, then pick the hour

If you are comparing options for an IGCSE science tutor in Al Barsha, read the statement of entry before you read any tutor profile. It tells you whether your child is on separate sciences, Cambridge 0654, Cambridge 0653 or Pearson 4SD0, and that single fact decides which topics are examinable and which past papers a session should use. Ask the exams officer whether Paper 5 or Paper 6 applies. Then book the free trial lesson, one subject, with no payment taken beforehand. Lessons run live online, one-to-one, in Gulf Standard Time.
