IGCSE Tutor near me in Al Barsha

An IGCSE tutor near me in Al Barsha is the search; the syllabus code is the answer. This page is written from the papers up: what Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 actually set, which command terms the mark scheme pays for, where the three sciences take marks off students who knew the content, and how a past paper should be run so that it teaches something. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time.

IB & IGCSE in Al Barsha

Start from the paper your child will actually sit

A near-me search sorts tutors by distance. For an IGCSE candidate the useful sort is by syllabus code, and the two have nothing to do with each other. Within the Al Barsha school cluster a Year 11 student might be entered for Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 at Extended, or Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics 4MA1 at Higher, and those are different examinations. One sets a paper without a calculator in most series; the other sets two calculator papers of equal weight. A tutor who has spent five years on one and is handed a student sitting the other will teach competent mathematics and miss the thing that decides the grade.

So this page is written from the papers up rather than from the neighbourhood in. It sets out what each mathematics specification actually examines and in what proportions, what the three separate sciences take marks off students for, how the practical component is assessed depending on which route a school entered, where English Language marks sit, and what a command term in a mark scheme is instructing the candidate to do. None of that varies by whether you live in Al Barsha 1 or Al Barsha South.

The reason to lead with mark schemes rather than content is that most IGCSE underperformance in this cluster is not a knowledge problem. A student who writes a paragraph of accurate chemistry in answer to a two-mark question beginning with state has written accurate chemistry and scored nothing. A student who reaches the correct answer to a five-mark mathematics question without showing a line of working has thrown away the method marks that were available independently of the answer. Both students know the subject. Both are losing a grade to a convention nobody taught them explicitly.

The second reason is that mark schemes are the only honest measure of progress. A tutor who says a student is improving has an opinion. A timed past paper marked against the published scheme produces a number, and two of those numbers four weeks apart produce a trend. That is the whole of our method: diagnose from a marked script, teach what the script identified, confirm with a second timed paper. It is unglamorous and it is the only version that can be checked.

On delivery, stated plainly: IB Gram does not send tutors to homes anywhere in the UAE. Home visits are a service we arrange only in India. Everything described here is one tutor and one student over live video at an agreed time. Where the Dubai in-home market appears below it is being priced for comparison, not offered; the band for an in-home one-to-one visit in this emirate is roughly AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the figure.

At a glance

  • Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different examinations with different calculator rules
  • Method marks on multi-step questions are available independently of the final answer
  • Command terms instruct the candidate; the mark scheme pays for following them
  • IB Gram delivers one-to-one lessons over live video; home visits are an India-only service
  • Progress is measured by timed papers marked to the published scheme, not by impression
IB programmes

Every IB programme stage, mapped to UAE school years

The British track in Al Barsha runs through three stages, and the subject-level work changes character at each one. The notes below are about what is examined rather than about school choice.

KS3Ages 11-14 · Years 7-9

Key Stage 3

No external examination, which is why it is the cheapest place in the whole British track to fix a problem. The content that reappears in IGCSE papers is narrow: fraction and index manipulation, rearranging formulae, scientific notation, and the ability to write a sentence that answers the question asked rather than describing the topic. A student weak on those four arrives in Year 10 already losing marks they will not recover.

Al Barsha schools set IGCSE options in Year 9, often with set placement doing the deciding. A student who arrived mid-year from a different system may have tested low purely because the topic order was different, and that placement can push them towards a Core entry two years later. It is worth challenging with evidence while it is still a placement rather than an entry.

IGCSEAges 14-16 · Years 10-11

International GCSE

Eight to ten subjects over two years, examined externally at the end in most cases. Cambridge grades A* to G with Core and Extended tiers in many subjects; Pearson Edexcel International GCSE grades 9 to 1. Papers carry almost the whole grade, so technique and timing matter as much as content, and the highest-return preparation is timed past papers marked against the published scheme rather than more revision reading.

This is where UAE families meet Ministry of Education equivalency: five accredited subjects at no less than grade E or 3, with Arabic and Islamic education excluded from that count, plus one A Level at E or two AS Levels at E on the British track. Checking the subject count in Year 9 rather than Year 12 is the difference between a plan and a problem.

Post-16Ages 16-19 · Years 12-13

A Level, IB Diploma or BTEC

IGCSE grades become entry requirements rather than report-card entries. A Level subject entry typically expects a grade 6 or B in that subject, and IB Higher Level choices carry comparable informal thresholds. The grade therefore controls which post-16 programme is available, which makes Year 11 a decision year rather than only an examination year.

In the Al Barsha cluster both A Level and IB Diploma routes exist within a short drive, so an IGCSE grade can open a change of programme without a change of home. That makes the marginal grade in a key subject unusually valuable here compared with a city where only one route is locally available.

Subject coverage

IB and IGCSE subjects we tutor

Each note below names the syllabus code and the specific place the mark scheme takes marks off. The content list is on the board's own site; what follows is what a marked script in this cluster actually shows.

Mathematics, Cambridge 0580

Core and Extended

Extended sets two papers, with one taken without a calculator in most series. The non-calculator paper exposes arithmetic and surd work that a display normally hides. Method marks are available on almost every multi-step question and are forfeited by students who write only the answer. Bearings, compound growth and non-right-angled trigonometry are the three reliable topic losses.

Mathematics, Pearson Edexcel 4MA1

Foundation and Higher

Higher sets two calculator papers of equal weight, which changes the preparation: pace across two full papers matters more than non-calculator fluency. The question style leans towards longer multi-step problems with marks distributed through the method. Students moving from a Cambridge school mid-course are usually caught out by the length rather than the difficulty.

Physics, Cambridge 0625

Core and Extended

Electricity takes more marks than any other topic, and the cause is reading circuit diagrams rather than recalling formulae: students cannot reliably decide whether components sit in series or parallel. The practical or alternative-to-practical paper rewards a specific vocabulary about variables, repeats and sources of error that can be taught in a handful of sessions.

Chemistry, Cambridge 0620

Core and Extended

Moles, concentration and reacting-mass calculations carry the losses at Extended, and the failures are arithmetic discipline rather than chemistry: units dropped mid-calculation, significant figures abandoned, mass used where moles were needed. Ionic equations and qualitative analysis are the other two gaps, and both respond fast to mark-scheme drilling.

Biology, Cambridge 0610

Core and Extended

A command-term subject wearing the costume of a memory subject. Describe, explain, suggest and compare demand different answer shapes, and a student who writes everything they know on a four-mark question scores two. Osmosis, enzyme graphs and genetics crosses are where Extended candidates lose most, usually on data interpretation rather than recall.

Coordinated Science 0654 and Combined Science 0653

Double and single award

0654 is a double award covering all three sciences for two grades; 0653 is a single award. Both sample across all three sciences, so strength in biology cannot cover weakness in physics. The most efficient tutoring here targets the weakest single science directly rather than running all three, which is what most group classes end up doing.

English Language, Cambridge 0500 and 0990

First Language

Directed writing and the extended response carry most of the grade, and the marks sit in audience, form and structure rather than in vocabulary range. Reading questions reward tight quotation selection; long paraphrase answers routinely score below short precise ones. Students over-prepare content and under-prepare the shape of the answer.

English as a Second Language, Cambridge 0510 and 0511

Core and Extended

A different examination from First Language with a different mark scheme, and students are sometimes entered for the wrong one. The reading comprehension questions have exact-answer expectations, and the writing tasks are marked against a defined set of criteria where accuracy weighs more heavily than ambition.

Business Studies 0450 and Economics 0455

Single tier

Both reward application to the case material in front of the student and punish generic answers. Economics marks are won on diagrams drawn early, labelled fully and then referred to in the prose; Business Studies marks on evaluation that reaches a conclusion rather than listing advantages and disadvantages. Technique teaching moves grades here faster than in any other subject.

Additional Mathematics 0606 and Further Pure 4PM1

Extended only

Taken by students heading for A Level Mathematics or an IB Higher Level route, and the best available preparation for either. The content reaches calculus and advanced trigonometry, so any weakness in core algebra becomes immediately visible. Students who struggle here are almost always struggling with Year 9 algebra rather than with the new material.

Computer Science 0478 and ICT 0417

Single tier

Computer Science loses students on pseudocode and trace tables rather than on programming, because both are directly examined and rarely practised. ICT carries practical components assessed on specific software operations, which catches students who use the tools casually rather than methodically.

How sessions run

Tutoring formats built around UAE school timetables

Three formats, all one tutor to one student over live video, and the choice is decided by what a marked script says rather than by preference.

Weekly subject work across Years 10 and 11

A fixed weekly slot following the school's scheme of work, in the subject a marked script identified. Over two years this is what changes a tier decision, because a misconception is caught in the week it appears rather than in a Year 11 mock. Families in this cluster usually start with one subject and add a second after a term.

  • Same tutor and slot, built around school and Arabic lessons
  • Follows the school's own sequence rather than a parallel syllabus
  • A written note after each session naming what to practise
  • Session starts from 16:15 depending on the community

Timed past-paper cycles

The format for the final two terms. The student sits a full paper under time, it is marked against the published scheme, the errors are logged by question and command term, and the next session teaches exactly those. Then another paper. Nothing else produces a measurable trend.

  • Full papers under exam conditions, not question sets
  • Marked against the published scheme, with the mark breakdown shown
  • An error log by question number and command term
  • A repeat paper to confirm the correction held

Single-trap repair blocks

Four to six sessions pointed at one identified failure: moles arithmetic, series and parallel circuits, non-calculator algebra, command-term handling in Biology. Bought after a mock, finished when the trap closes, and then stopped rather than rolled into an open-ended arrangement.

  • One named trap, identified from a marked script
  • Mark-scheme language taught explicitly rather than implied
  • Drilled to automaticity rather than explained once
  • Closed out with a topic-specific timed paper

What IB and IGCSE study actually looks like in Al Barsha

01

What a near-me search cannot tell you: which specification your child sits

The first question a competent IGCSE tutor asks is which syllabus code the school entered, and the number of parents who can answer it immediately is small. It is not a trick question and it is not the parent's fault; schools rarely put it in a letter. It is on the entry confirmation, and the examinations officer will give it to you in a one-line email. Until somebody has it, any plan is guesswork, because the specifications differ in ways that change what a student should be practising.

Take mathematics, the most common request in this cluster. Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580 at Extended sets two papers, one of which is taken without a calculator in most series. That single difference reshapes the preparation: surd manipulation, exact-value trigonometry and mental arithmetic under time all become directly examinable. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE Mathematics 4MA1 at Higher sets two calculator papers of equal weight, where the pressure is sustained pace across longer multi-step questions rather than non-calculator fluency. A student who moves school mid-course between the two is at real risk, and it happens in Al Barsha more than in most districts because families move within New Dubai while keeping the same commute.

The sciences divide similarly. Cambridge offers separate Physics 0625, Chemistry 0620 and Biology 0610, plus Coordinated Science 0654 as a double award and Combined Science 0653 as a single award, with Core and Extended tiers in most cases. Pearson Edexcel runs single-tier qualifications including 4PH1, 4CH1 and 4BI1. The practical assessment differs too: Cambridge schools choose between a practical examination and an alternative-to-practical paper, and which one the school entered decides whether a student needs to write about apparatus they have handled or apparatus they are shown in a diagram. Pearson assesses practical skills within the written papers instead.

The practical consequence of all this is simple and worth doing today. Get the codes. Write them down somewhere you will find them in February. Give them to any tutor before the first lesson. A tutor who asks for them unprompted has told you something useful about how they work; a tutor who says the content is broadly the same has described the content and ignored the papers, which is where the grade is actually decided.

Command terms, and what the mark scheme is actually paying for

Every IGCSE question opens with an instruction, and the mark scheme pays for carrying out that instruction rather than for displaying knowledge of the topic. This is the single most recoverable source of lost marks in the whole qualification and it is barely taught explicitly. A two-mark question beginning with state wants two facts, in as few words as will carry them, with no justification. A four-mark question beginning with explain wants causal links, and a list of facts with no because in it cannot score full marks however accurate it is.

The pattern shows up clearly in marked scripts from this cluster. Biology candidates write three times as much as the question needs and score half, because they have answered describe with explain or the reverse. Chemistry candidates lose a mark on a calculation they got right because the question said give your answer to three significant figures and they gave four. Physics candidates lose the final mark on a six-mark question because suggest required a reasoned proposal and they offered a definition. In every case the subject knowledge was adequate and the instruction was not followed.

Teaching this is quick, which is why it is the first thing a good tutor does with a weak script. The method is to take the mark scheme for a paper the student has already sat, read the allocation aloud question by question, and have the student rewrite three answers to the scheme's requirement rather than to their own instinct. Most students need two or three sessions of this before it becomes automatic. It is not glamorous and it is frequently worth a grade on its own.

The second half of the same point is working. Mathematics and science mark schemes allocate method marks that are available independently of the final answer, which means a student who makes an arithmetic slip on line four of a five-line solution can still score most of the question if the method is visible. Students trained to be tidy write only the answer and forfeit all of it. In this cluster that habit is often inherited from a system where the answer was all that mattered, and it is the single cheapest change available: write the line, every time.

03

The three sciences, trap by trap

Marked scripts in this cluster fail in patterned ways, and the patterns are specific enough to be targeted in four to six sessions each. In Chemistry the dominant pattern is quantitative discipline. Moles, concentration and reacting-mass questions are where Extended candidates lose most, and the errors are almost never conceptual: a unit dropped halfway through, significant figures abandoned, a mass substituted where moles were required, a ratio inverted. A student who can state Avogadro's number and cannot carry units through four lines of arithmetic has a procedural problem, and procedural problems are drilled rather than explained.

In Physics the dominant pattern is circuits. Students who can recite the relationships between current, voltage and resistance frequently cannot look at a diagram and decide whether two components are in series or parallel, which makes every subsequent step wrong. Behind that sits a second pattern about signs and units in anything involving energy or forces. The fix is diagram reading first, formula second, which is the reverse of how most students approach a question.

In Biology the dominant pattern is command terms, discussed above, compounded by data interpretation. Osmosis questions, enzyme rate graphs and genetics crosses are where Extended candidates lose most, and in each case the biology is known while the reading of the graph or the setting out of the cross is not. Punnett squares drawn without labels, gradients described without reference to the axes, and conclusions that restate the data instead of interpreting it account for a large share of the marks.

Across all three sciences there is the practical component, and which route the school entered matters. Cambridge schools choose between a practical examination and an alternative-to-practical paper. Either way the marks come from writing about method: independent and dependent variables, what was controlled, how many repeats, what the sources of error were and how they would be reduced. That is a written skill with a recognisable mark-scheme vocabulary, it is examined heavily, and it is taught perfectly well over video. The hands-on laboratory work itself belongs at school, and no tutoring arrangement substitutes for it.

How a past paper should actually be run

Most past-paper work in this market is done badly, and doing it badly is worse than not doing it, because it consumes the limited stock of papers while teaching nothing. The common version is a student working through questions at their own pace with the answers nearby, stopping when stuck, and finishing with a vague sense of having revised. Nothing in that process generates information, and information is the only reason to sit a past paper rather than read a textbook.

The version that works has six steps and they are not optional. The paper is sat under time, in one sitting, with the correct equipment and nothing else available. It is marked against the published mark scheme, question by question, with the marks written on. The lost marks are then classified: not known, not finished, not answered as asked, or method not shown. Those four categories produce completely different responses. The next sessions teach only what the classification identified. And then a second paper is sat, under the same conditions, to establish whether the correction held.

The classification step is the one that gets skipped and it is the one that matters. A student who lost fourteen marks has not lost fourteen marks of the same kind. If eleven of them came from the last two questions, the problem is pace and the response is a per-question clock rather than more teaching. If they clustered in one topic, that is six to eight sessions of content. If they were spread across accurate answers that missed the command term, that is three sessions of mark-scheme work and probably the best value available anywhere in the qualification.

On sourcing papers: we do not supply, host or distribute Cambridge or Pearson past papers, mark schemes, syllabus documents or grade-boundary tables, because they are the boards' copyright material. Your school's examinations officer has them, both boards publish specimen and past materials through their own channels, and a tutor should be working from the school's own stock or from officially published material. A provider offering a download library of mark schemes is distributing material it does not own, which is worth noticing about how it operates generally.

05

Raw marks, grade boundaries and what a score actually converts to

  • Boundaries are set per paper, per series, after the papers are sat
  • Express a target in marks on a named past paper, not in percentages
  • Seven marks short has identifiable homes in a script; six percentage points does not
  • Boundaries are published by the boards; we read them rather than redistribute them

Parents in this cluster frequently ask what percentage is an A, and the honest answer is that there is no fixed figure. Grade boundaries are set per paper, per series, after the papers have been sat, to account for how difficult that particular paper turned out to be. A boundary that sat at one mark in June can sit two or three marks away in November. Both Cambridge and Pearson publish boundaries after each series through their own channels, and those are the only versions worth looking at.

What this means practically is that a target should be expressed in marks on a specific past paper rather than in percentages in the abstract. If a student scored 94 out of 130 on a paper whose published boundary for the grade they want was 101, the gap is seven marks and those seven marks have identifiable homes in the script. That is an actionable target. A conversation about getting them from 72 per cent to 78 per cent is not, because neither number maps to anything the student can do differently on a Tuesday.

The same logic applies to the tier decision, where Core and Extended, or Foundation and Higher, carry different grade ranges. A student consistently in the bottom band on Extended papers with two terms to go faces a real question, because a secure Core grade can serve a family better than a weak Extended one, particularly where the objective is five secure passes at no less than grade E or 3 for Ministry of Education equivalency rather than a top grade in one subject. That is an uncomfortable conversation and the evidence for it is in the marks, not in the impressions.

We do not publish, reproduce or redistribute grade-boundary tables for the same reason we do not distribute past papers: they are the boards' material. We will read them with you from the official source and work out what your child's marks mean against them, which is the useful part anyway.

What subject-specialist IGCSE tuition costs here, and what a parent can verify

Everything in this section is checkable by you in about ten minutes, which is the point of presenting it this way. Every figure below was published by the provider named and read in October 2026. None of them is IB Gram's price list, and none of them should be taken on trust from a tutoring page, including this one. Open the provider's own site and look.

At the entry level, budget online tutoring is advertised from AED 45 to 150 an hour, with EdFlik publishing AED 45 to 65 and Tutopiya AED 33 to 52. Qualified subject tutors online are quoted at AED 150 to 300, with Unitors publishing IGCSE tuition from AED 150. IGCSE and IB specialists sit at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai rate table putting specialists at AED 200 to 450 and upwards. In-home one-to-one visits run AED 180 to 500 an hour with travel inside the rate, Bestimate putting the band at AED 180 to 350. Premium named or examiner-led tutors reach AED 500 to 650 and beyond, with BartyED publishing AED 650.

Translated into monthly spend, Bestimate's Dubai estimates for a weekly one-hour session come out at roughly AED 240 to 600 at the budget end, AED 600 to 1,200 in the mid band, and AED 1,000 to 2,000 and upwards for an examination-year specialist. Package pricing seen in this market includes AED 799 a month for eight online sessions and AED 1,599 to 1,799 a month for four two-hour in-home sessions. A Year 11 student taking two subjects at two sessions a week each is buying sixteen hours a month, not four, so the per-hour figure matters more than it first appears.

Two things a parent can verify beyond price, and should. Ask whether the tutor can name the syllabus code before you give it to them, which separates a specialist from a subject teacher in about thirty seconds. And ask whether past-paper marking will be done against the published mark scheme with the marks shown to you. Those two answers predict the quality of the next six months better than any hourly rate does. On examiner claims specifically: unless current examiner status can be evidenced, treat the word as marketing, and note that examiner status gives no access to marking, boundaries or paper content in any case.

Exam series, timetable zones and the mistake that costs a paper

UAE candidates sit two series a year and it is worth being exact about which. Cambridge International runs IGCSE, O Level and International A Level examinations in a June series and a November series. The February and March series that circulates on some tutoring pages is offered to India only and is not a route for UAE candidates; a page telling a Dubai parent to prepare for a February window is giving them a date for a different country. Pearson Edexcel International GCSE examinations are available in May or June and in November, with the November 2026 final timetable running from late October to 19 November 2026.

There is a second, sharper point about Cambridge timetables that almost nobody mentions. Every exam centre is allocated to one of six administrative zones, and Cambridge states that it is essential to use the correct version of the timetable for the centre's zone, and that it cannot accept responsibility for candidates who miss an exam after using the wrong zone timetable. A family that downloads a timetable from a search result rather than from the school has a real risk of reading the wrong one. Get the timetable from the examinations officer.

Results dates are published and useful for planning a resit decision. Pearson's June 2026 results went to centres on 19 August 2026 and to students on 20 August 2026, and November 2025 results reached students on 22 January 2026. That gap between a November sitting and a January result is what makes the November series a different kind of decision from a June one: a student resitting in November is waiting into the new year for a grade that may be needed for a post-16 application. Pearson also publishes provisional timetables ahead of each series, so dates can be revised and the live official timetable is the only version to plan against.

Working backwards from those, the entry deadline is the date most families miss, because it falls months before the paper. The exact deadline is set by the centre rather than published as a single global date, so it comes from the examinations officer, and for a private candidate it comes from the centre they have arranged. A student who decides in October to resit in November has usually already missed it.

The private tuition work permit was introduced by Ministerial Resolution No. 710 of 2023 Regarding the Introduction of Private Tuition Work Permits, is issued through the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, and is granted free of charge for two years. MoHRE's own service page, Issuance of a New Work Permit - Private Tutor Licensing, lists no fees and a two-working-day completion time, with applications made through the MoHRE smart app, website and e-services system.

Eligibility is broad by design. Teachers registered in government or private schools may hold it, as may employees in the government and private sectors, unemployed individuals, university students and school students aged 15 to 18. That last category is worth sitting with: a permit-holding tutor may be a 16-year-old. The permit establishes that somebody may lawfully charge for lessons and says nothing about whether they can teach Cambridge 0620 Extended. Any provider leading with permit status as a quality signal is answering a question about legality and presenting it as an answer about teaching.

Individuals offering private tutoring without a permit are subject to fines and penalties outlined in the applicable laws. No fine schedule has been published, so any specific amount quoted at you is unsourced. Separately, Abu Dhabi's ADEK professional-ethics rules bar private and charter school staff from paid private tutoring of students enrolled at their own school, and the MoHRE permit's code of conduct similarly bars serving students affiliated with the tutor's own school. That is press-reported rather than taken from the current ADEK document, so verify the exact wording there, but the principle rules out the arrangement families most often ask about, which is paying their child's own classroom teacher.

On our own position, plainly: IB Gram holds no KHDA, Ministry of Education, Cambridge or Pearson approval, accreditation or partnership, and does not describe its tutors as approved by any of them. Dubai private schools are regulated by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, described on u.ae as responsible for enhancing and overseeing the quality of private education in the emirate, and the KHDA Educational Services Permit is a separate instrument for training institutes with physical premises, requiring initial approval, a maximum of six months to complete the permit and licence steps, and renewal at least 30 days before expiry. We hold none of that and will not imply otherwise.

Starting, and where coverage runs out in this cluster

  • Send syllabus codes and a marked script before the trial lesson
  • Tightest coverage: 0606, 4PM1 and the separate sciences near a series
  • Where the right tutor is outside the UAE, you are told before booking
  • Session starts from about 16:15 in Al Barsha 1 to around 17:00 in Al Barsha South

Three things to send and then a lesson. The syllabus codes from the entry confirmation, the school and year group, and either a marked paper or the mock breakdown. A specialist in that code runs a no-cost trial lesson at a time that fits your school run, and afterwards you get a written view of what the work should cover before the next series, with the error classification from whatever script you sent. Nothing is paid beforehand and nothing is committed after.

Tightest coverage in this cluster is predictable. Additional Mathematics 0606 and Further Pure 4PM1 are thin, because few teachers have taught them. The separate sciences at Extended tighten sharply in the four weeks before a series, when every family in Dubai wants the same hours. Arabic as a first language is constrained by the stream requirement. English as a Second Language at Extended is more available than families expect, and is sometimes the right entry where a student has been placed in First Language by default.

Where no specialist in the exact code is free when you need one, you get the actual position: another slot with the right person, a named date when they free up, or a tutor based outside the UAE teaching the same code over the same live video at the same Gulf Standard Time hour. Several providers in this market conceal non-UAE delivery behind a local-looking contact route. We state it before you book, because a family that knows can decide.

Timing through the year: the first workable weekday slot runs from about 16:15 in Al Barsha 1 to around 17:00 in Al Barsha 3 and Al Barsha South. Arabic and Islamic Education periods are fixed. Ramadan moves families to post-Iftar sessions, and the shortened school day opens a late-morning window. On the enquiry form, which collects data about a minor: year group, subject, syllabus code, school and a parent contact is all we need, not a photograph or identity documents, and anything sent for diagnosis is used for that alone. UAE Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on Personal Data Protection is the framework and the privacy link sets out retention and deletion.

Where we tutor

Nearby areas we cover around Al Barsha

The near-me radius shapes a school run and nothing else once lessons are online. These notes cover what each community does to an evening and which schools it feeds.

Al Barsha 1

Red Line Metro at Mall of the Emirates with the tightest school cluster in the district, so pickups are short and the earliest realistic weekday start is around 16:15.

Al Barsha 2

Villa compounds behind Umm Suqeim Road with two large schools adjacent. A 16:30 start is workable; earlier runs into the pickup queue.

Al Barsha 3

Further from the Metro and more residential. Two pickups in opposite directions is common where siblings attend different schools, pushing the first slot past 17:00.

Al Barsha South

No Metro station and car-dependent, running towards Dubai Science Park and Jumeirah Village. British-curriculum schools dominate, so the IGCSE cohort here is proportionally large.

Barsha Heights

Apartment towers on the Red Line, formerly Tecom. Households here generally want a session after a parent commute rather than straight after school.

Al Quoz

East across Sheikh Zayed Road with several schools drawing Al Barsha families. The eastbound evening crossing is the slow direction.

Umm Suqeim

North along the Umm Suqeim Road corridor. Students here frequently attend Al Barsha schools and the homeward run is slower than the reverse.

Jumeirah Village Circle

South-west of Al Barsha South, feeding the same southern school cluster, with a 15:30 journey into Al Barsha that limits any in-person arrangement.

School ecosystem

IB and Cambridge school communities we support in Al Barsha

British-curriculum schools in and around Al Barsha

This is where the IGCSE entries in the district come from, and the exam-board split within it is genuinely mixed: some schools enter Cambridge across the board, some enter Pearson Edexcel, and some split by department. That is why the syllabus code has to be checked rather than assumed from the school name.

  • Kings' School Al Barsha
  • Safa Community School
  • Dubai Heights Academy
  • Sunmarke School
  • Arcadia Global School
  • GEMS Metropole School

Mixed-track schools in the same radius

Several schools in the Al Barsha radius run American, Ministry of Education or Indian programmes with no IGCSE entries at all, which thins the local population of IGCSE-experienced teachers relative to the population of teachers. Students sometimes transfer into an IGCSE school at Year 10 and meet the specification cold.

  • Al Mawakeb School Al Barsha
  • Dubai National School Al Barsha
  • American School of Dubai
  • Dubai American Academy
  • Dubai International Academy Al Barsha
  • Nord Anglia International School Dubai

Schools are named as context for the exam-board mix in this radius; IB Gram has no affiliation, partnership or endorsement arrangement with any of them.

How matching works

From first enquiry to a tutor who fits

  1. 01

Get the syllabus codes from the school

One email to the examinations officer produces the codes for every subject. Cambridge 0580 and Pearson 4MA1 are different examinations; 0620 and 4CH1 are different examinations. Without the codes, any plan is being built for a paper the student may not be sitting.

  2. 02

    Send a marked script

A mock paper with the marks written on tells a specialist what a conversation cannot: which questions, which command terms, whether working was shown. Where nothing marked exists, the tutor sets a short diagnostic inside the trial lesson and classifies the errors from that.

  3. 03

Classify the lost marks before buying anything

Not known, not finished, not answered as asked, method not shown. Four categories, four different responses, four different numbers of sessions. A plan written before this classification is a guess, and a tutor who skips it will be guessing for the first month at your expense.

  4. 04

Run timed papers on a cycle

Paper under time, marked to the published scheme, errors logged by question and command term, targeted teaching, then another paper. Two marked papers four weeks apart produce a trend. No other method produces a number you can check.

  5. 05

Review the error log, not the feeling

At four weeks the log either shortens or it does not. If the same error type keeps reappearing, the diagnosis or the tutor needs changing rather than the hours increasing, and that is a conversation worth having early rather than in the week before a paper.

Why families choose us

What UAE parents tell us matters most

Matched to the code, not the subject

A tutor is assigned against 0580 Extended or 4MA1 Higher, against 0620 or 4CH1, and against the tier entered. Past papers from the wrong board are not practice, and a tutor who treats them as interchangeable is preparing a student for a paper that will not appear.

Marked to the published scheme, with the marks shown

Progress is a number from a timed paper marked against the board's own scheme, not a tutor's impression. You see the mark breakdown and the error classification, which means you can check whether the last four weeks did anything.

Command terms taught explicitly

State, describe, explain, suggest, compare and evaluate each demand a different answer shape and the scheme pays for the right one. Most students lose a grade to this and almost nobody is taught it directly. It takes two or three sessions and it is the cheapest available improvement.

Board materials referenced, never redistributed

We do not host or supply Cambridge or Pearson past papers, mark schemes, syllabus documents or boundary tables. They are the boards' copyright and available through the school and the boards' own channels. A provider with a download library is distributing material it does not own.

Rates published with their sources and their date

Every AED figure here names the provider that published it and is dated to October 2026, so you can check it yourself in ten minutes. Three of the six pages ranking for these searches publish no price at all, and the two that do quote US dollars.

The UAE series stated correctly

Cambridge runs June and November in the UAE; the February and March series is offered to India only. Centres sit in one of six zones and Cambridge warns that the wrong zone timetable can cost a paper. A date is the one thing on a tutoring page a parent will act on.

Questions parents ask

IB and IGCSE tutoring in Al Barsha: your questions answered

How do I find out which syllabus code my child in Al Barsha is entered for?+

Ask the examinations officer at the school, or check the entry confirmation statement the school issues. It takes one email and it is the most useful piece of information in the whole process. Schools in this cluster enter both Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel, and some split by department, entering Cambridge for the sciences and Pearson for mathematics or the reverse, so the board cannot be inferred from the school's name or curriculum label. Write the codes down somewhere you will find them in February, when past-paper work starts in earnest.

What is the actual difference between describe and explain in an IGCSE mark scheme?+

Describe wants what happens, in sequence, without causes. Explain wants the causal links stated, which in practice means the answer needs connectives like because, which means that, or therefore doing real work. A describe answer that supplies causes wastes words without gaining marks; an explain answer that lists accurate facts with no causal link cannot reach full marks however correct it is. Both appear constantly across the sciences, and students who have not been shown the distinction lose two or three marks per paper to it, which compounds across six papers.

How many past papers should a Year 11 student in this district actually sit?+

Fewer than most families assume, done properly, rather than many done badly. Six to eight full papers per subject across the final two terms, each sat under time, marked against the published scheme, with every lost mark classified and the classification driving the next sessions, outperforms twenty papers worked through casually with the answers nearby. The limiting factor is marking and analysis time, not paper supply. A paper that is sat and not analysed has consumed a paper and produced nothing, and the stock of recent papers is finite.

Why does my child lose marks when the answer looks correct?+

Three usual causes. The command term was not followed, so accurate content answered a different question from the one asked. The working was not shown, so method marks available independently of the answer were forfeited. Or a precision instruction was ignored: a significant-figure requirement, a unit, a specified number of points. All three are visible in a marked script and all three are procedural rather than conceptual, which is why they close quickly. A student in this position is usually one or two grades below what their actual subject knowledge supports.

Are IGCSE grade boundaries the same in every series?+

No. Boundaries are set after each series for each paper, to account for how hard that specific paper proved, so the mark needed for a given grade moves between June and November and between years. Both Cambridge and Pearson publish boundaries through their own channels after each series. The practical consequence is that a target should be expressed as a mark on a named past paper rather than as a percentage: seven marks short of last year's boundary has identifiable homes in the script, whereas six percentage points does not translate into anything a student can do differently.

Which Cambridge maths paper is sat without a calculator?+

On Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics 0580, one of the two papers is taken without a calculator in most series, and that paper is where a term's arithmetic work shows or does not. It makes surd manipulation, exact-value trigonometry and mental arithmetic under time directly examinable. Pearson Edexcel 4MA1 Higher sets two calculator papers of equal weight instead, so the pressure there is sustained pace across longer questions. This single difference is why past papers from the two boards are not interchangeable practice, and why the code has to be confirmed before preparation starts.

What is the alternative to practical paper, and does my child sit it?+

Cambridge schools choose between a practical examination and an alternative-to-practical written paper for the sciences, and which one your child sits is a school entry decision rather than a student choice. Pearson Edexcel assesses practical skills inside the written papers instead. In every route the marks come from writing about method: independent and dependent variables, what was controlled, the number of repeats, sources of error and how to reduce them. That is a written skill with a recognisable mark-scheme vocabulary. Ask the examinations officer which route applies before revising for the wrong one.

Is Coordinated Science easier than taking the three sciences separately?+

It is less content for fewer grades, which is not the same as easier. Cambridge Coordinated Science 0654 is a double award covering all three sciences for two grades; Combined Science 0653 is a single award. Both sample across all three sciences, so a student strong in biology and weak in physics cannot hide behind the stronger subject. The separate sciences carry more content but allow a weak subject to be isolated and a strong one to be fully credited. For post-16 science routes, separate sciences are more commonly expected, so check that before the option is chosen.

Where do we get past papers and mark schemes from legally?+

From the school's examinations officer, who holds them, and from Cambridge International and Pearson's own published channels. We do not supply, host or distribute past papers, mark schemes, syllabus documents or grade-boundary tables, because they are the boards' copyright material. A tutoring provider advertising a download library of mark schemes is distributing material it does not own, which is worth noticing. A tutor should be working from the school's stock or from officially published material, and reading boundary tables with you from the official source rather than reproducing them.

What does a genuine subject-specialist IGCSE tutor charge in this part of Dubai?+

Qualified subject tutors online are published at AED 150 to 300 an hour, with Unitors quoting IGCSE tuition from AED 150. Specialists sit at AED 200 to 450 and above, with TutorChase publishing AED 270 and Bestimate's Dubai table putting specialists at AED 200 to 450 and upwards. Budget online tutoring runs from AED 45 to 150. In-home visits are AED 180 to 500 with travel inside the rate. Those are other providers' figures read in October 2026, checkable on their own sites, and not IB Gram's rates, which we quote on request.

Will a tutor mark my child's past paper against the official scheme?+

That is the method rather than an extra. A paper is sat under time, marked question by question against the published mark scheme with the marks written on, and every lost mark classified as not known, not finished, not answered as asked, or method not shown. You see the breakdown. The reason to insist on this is that it is the only way to tell whether four weeks of work did anything: two marked papers a month apart produce a trend, and a tutor's impression produces an opinion. Ask for it explicitly before booking.

My child writes too much in every answer. Is that genuinely a problem?+

Yes, and it is one of the faster things to fix. Over-writing is nearly always a command-term failure: the student is answering every question as though it said explain, so a two-mark state question receives a paragraph. The cost is double, because the excess words earn nothing and the time spent on them is taken from the final questions, where the marks are often easier. Marked scripts with losses concentrated at the end of every paper usually have over-writing at the start. Two or three sessions rewriting answers to the scheme's actual requirement generally closes it.

Does the tutor need to know which Al Barsha school my child attends?+

It helps for two reasons that have nothing to do with geography. The school decides the exam board and the tier entered, and sometimes splits boards by department, so the school name narrows down what to confirm. And the school sets the internal assessment and mock calendar that the tutoring should be placed against, since those dates are school-set rather than board-set. What the school name does not do is affect who is a suitable tutor, because the specification is the specification regardless of which building it is taught in.

Should timed past-paper work start in Year 10 or wait until Year 11?+

Topic-specific questions from past papers can start in Year 10 as soon as a topic is finished, and that is good practice. Full timed papers belong in Year 11, because an incomplete syllabus makes a full paper discouraging rather than diagnostic and burns a paper from a finite stock. The sensible sequence is Year 10 for topic questions under the mark scheme, early Year 11 for part-papers, and the final two terms for full timed papers on a cycle. Starting full papers too early is the most common way families waste the recent-paper supply.

What if the subject or code we need is not covered at the hour we want?+

You are told which of three things applies rather than given a substitute. Either another slot works with the right specialist, or there is a named date when they become free, or the right specialist is based outside the UAE and teaches the same code over the same live video at the same Gulf Standard Time hour. The tightest areas in this cluster are Additional Mathematics 0606, Further Pure 4PM1, Arabic as a first language, and the separate sciences in the four weeks before a series. We will not put a general subject teacher on an Extended paper and call it a match.

Send the code and a marked script

The useful filter is not distance. Send the syllabus codes from the entry confirmation, the year group, the school, and a marked mock paper, and a specialist in that exact specification will run a no-cost trial lesson at a time that fits your school run. You will get the error classification from the script and a written view of what the remaining weeks should cover, including what they cannot. Papers are marked against the published scheme with the breakdown shown to you, so you can check whether the work is landing. Lessons are one-to-one over live video, timed to Gulf Standard Time, and nothing is paid before the trial.
